We boarded the boat in Malaga which was very convenient as we as we spend a great deal of time in Spain. Our outside cabin on Deck two was a good size with plenty of space for our clothes a large bed and port hole. No shampoo or body lotion supplied. Any luggage which contained an iron, scissors knife or alcohol had the articles confiscated and given back at the end of the voyage what did they think guests were going to do with a knife or scissors!!. There were no facilities for using and iron or washing machine for your clothes. All cases were thoroughly searched for alcohol when returning to the boat and kept until the end, Cunard were much more relaxed about this and even let you take a couple of bottles of wine on board at the beginning of the voyage. We were on "My Time" dining so we could choose to take our meal in the restaurant anytime from 6.45 to 10.30 although if dining early it was preferable to book at least the day before. We were always given a table for two as we requested, the food and service was good. All the staff on the ship from Cabin Stewart to Waiters was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately using the casual "Windjammer" restaurant for breakfast and lunch was a nightmare -- (unless the boat was in port and a lot of people were away from the ship) first it was very difficult to find a free table and with so many people trying to choose from the buffet it felt like rugby scrum, again the food was varied and plentiful when you managed to get it. There were two good sized pools with spar baths beside each and they were divided into adult or family sections an excellent idea. The evening entertainment in the theatre and on the ice skating rink was good and effects very professional. There seemed to be plenty for families and children to keep themselves occupied but little for a couple like us when the weather was not good enough to sunbathe. On Cunard they had some very interesting day time talks we would like to have liked to find someone to play bridge but where it would have been I don't know as the card room was always fully occupied. The Promenade was often unpleasantly crowded as they had two bars, the snack bar, and shops, all in a very small space. Trying to find a spare table to sit and listen to music being played in one of the bars again was a great feat. In all we found the boat was very uncomfortably crowded in the public areas, would we go with Royal Caribbean again the jury is out- but certainly not on this boat or one of their Voyager class. Our Cunard cruise in February was so much better organised and the boat never seemed over full I think space on this boat could have been used in a better way, there was the Imperial lounge which was often vacant. This is the first review I have written after 10+ cruises on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, NCL, MSC, P&O and Festival.I felt I had to write it as RCI really do need to review some of the standards on the Adventure of the Seas. Lets look at the pros and cons. PROS Nice ship with good facilities. Very clean with staff continually cleaning. Cabin cleanliness excellent with excellent cabin steward who was very pleasant. Food in main dining room good but not great. Food in Windjammer Cafe OK. Food in Johnny Rockets excellent - staff very good. Breakfast choice good with nice orange juice. Water and lemonade also available at meals. Noticeable that quality and size of sirloin steaks has gone down - used to be excellent but I guess you have to go to the paid restaurant for better quality.Didn't use these. The two Tribute shows in the theatre were very good - Beatles and Celine Dion, not impressed with the others. Embarkation/disembarkation processes very good. CONS Some areas of the ship are tired and worn and need refurbishing. Some staff appear to be very miserable, apathetic and unhappy with only occasional pleasantries being offered - quite different to my recent experience on Celebrity and NCL. Smoking is a major issue on what is supposed to be a non-smoking ship. For example the Duck and Dog Pub was full of smokers and it was impossible for non-smokers to sit inside - you could cot the smokiness with a knife. Smoking was being allowed in all lounges and there was a continuing smell of cigarette smoke throughout the ship. There was totally no supervision or enforcment of smoking only in the designated areas. There is very bad vibration on the ship particularly towards the stern. This was very noticeable in the Windjammer and the main dining room. Luckily my cabin was near the front and the vibration there was a lot less. I have cruised many times and never expierienced this level of vibration before. Its obviously an engine/propeller problem that needs sorting. Although hand washing gel was available outside the dining venues it was not being enforced by the staff unlike my experience on Celebrity and NCL where staff were quite strict. This really does need addressing. Unsupervised children were not being stopped from using the jacuzzis by staff. This I believe is quite dangerous. Lastly drinks prices were very expensive. A large beer costs just under $8 with service charge/tax with a similar price for a regular glass of wine. Cocktails more expensive again. SUMMARY Would I travel on this ship again? Only if the above matters are addressed. The non-enforcement of smoking rules are in my view a big issue and I think it unfair on non smokers that you aren't able to go into a bar or lounge without having to sit next to someone smoking. I sailed last year on the Celebrity Equinox and never once in any area of the ship had a problem. Royal Caribbean used to set cruise standards - not any longer I'm afraid. Read Less

We have been cruising on and off since 1991 (so we are not youngsters) with a variety of companies on assorted seas, oceans and rivers. Our children are long grown up and therefore we never utilised any of the many family oriented activities, which seemed to be enjoyed by those participating. We took a taxi from the station which was 12 euros to the embarkation hall. The loading process was fast efficient and painless. Our cabin was comfortable enough with more than enough room for a couple, a good sized bed with a sofa and plenty of storage space. Exceptionally clean and attended to by an unobtrusive attendant who made every effort to ensure our comfort. Dining: The immense self service Windjammer Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch and is a canteen style self service buffet where, never mind the queues and the general elbowing aside when gathering your food selection, you then are faced with the challenge of finding a seat, no easy task. We chose to avoid the windjammer. Once found taking an a la carte breakfast in the Strauss dining room was a pleasant start to the day with an excellent menu served professionally. There is no a la carte lunch service so you are left to use the Windjammer of the buffet in the Vivaldi dining room. This was well presented with a good selection of dishes, however on a sailing with 2500 Spanish clients who like to eat late it is advisable to lunch early and avoid the masses. The Evening dining is divided into 2 sittings 7:00 and 9:30 which you choose prior to boarding and you are allocated a dining room and table and for the trip. As hard as they try there are far too many passengers for them to serve even a half decent meal and we quickly found that the safest bet was a cold starter and the chefs dish of the day for a main course. Although even that was not safe from the red hot plates which continued to cook the dish and dry out meat dishes. The dining room staff were polite and helpful although they were fully aware of the shortcomings they knew that it was futile to point out the shortcomings. A very professional waiter was in charge of a group of table accompanied by an "assistant". The assistants were charming but had a long way to go to complete their progression to "waiter". FANCY A DRINK? Count your fingers after the purchase. The basic drink prices are exorbitant drinks which are then subject to the addition of 23% to any drink made up of 15% service charge and 8% Spanish value added tax A bottle of Pinot Grigio, a basic enough wine has a starting price of 33 dollars rapidly turns into 40.59 dollars There are several wine package offers and we selected the Gold package at 180 dollars for just 7 bottles hits you with a bill of 221.40 dollars. Not exactly a great reduction for bulk buying. WANT TO GET OFF THE BOAT? OK but not until you pay. 15 dollars, 10 dollars, 5 dollars a head until Corsica where you can walk into town for free. So an additional charge of 60 dollars for a couple just for visiting the ports. WHY ON EARTH NOT INCLUDE IT IN THE PRICE?? We used room service just the once when we ordered a bottle of wine and a cheese platter to have after dinner at 8:30 p.m. it arrived at 3:00 p.m. the following day (nice timing) Before we left we read smoking had been reported as a problem, but we found that the non smoking areas were being respected and were easily avoided by non smokers. The pools and pool decks were over congested and getting a sun bed was virtually impossible unless you were willing to get up there really early and stake your claim. The rule was that if an attendant noted that a bed with a towel on was left vacant for more than 30 minutes or an hour, they would remove the towel and make the sun bed available. I cant remember how long as it was irrelevant. We never saw any enforcement. The entertainment in the Lyric theatre was at best mediocre, and I am afraid that we gave up and missed that the last two shows. The Ice show was in spite of a few tumbles and quick recoveries far more professional and the best show of the week. There were two formal nights, when those of us who took the trouble dress formally were certainly in the minority, in fact we were out of place. The majority made more of an effort than on a normal night but there were very few jackets, hardly any ties and some never even managed to get out of polo shirts. One table was asked to change when they turned up in T shirts Overall younger people on their first cruise seemed to be happy enough. Embarkation was very pleasant. We just walked on the ship at 3 o'clock. We had a junior suite and it was nice and lots of space in the cabin, but the bathroom was very small and had a shower curtain. The cabin was spotless. We had a huge balcony which we could hardly use because smoking on verandas is allowed on Royal Caribbean and so we sat in smoke for most of the time. Talking about smoking on the ship as Odiner said before smoke was all over the ship. Since we had about at least 80 % Spanish speaking guest on board smoke was every where. They did not care about what side on the ship they smoked where ever they wanted and nobody said anything. We told some people to go on the other side of the ship but it felt like fighting windmills. The noise level on the ship was outrages. At 2 pm kids were still screaming and running the hallways. The noise level in the dining areas, pools and bars was like I have never experienced it before. Food: The food in the Windjammer was so poor and you had to be aware what time you were eating otherwise you stood in line for table. Food was spilled all over and tables were not clean. It felt like being in summer camp. Dining room was better since we had a table, but they changed the time for eating. It was 7 pm for seating and 9:30 pm second seating. At second seating no table was available because all the Spanish speaking people eat so late. We hardly made to the dining room having had spend the day at shore excursions and getting ready for dinner. Food was poor too in the main dining room. Mashed potatoes to almost every main course. Once I had tiger shrimps (by the way only two) with mashed potatoes. The fillet was only two small slices of meat. Almost all the food was bland and tasteless. Without salt and pepper you could not taste a thing. Excursions: We took the one tour in Valencia going to town and visiting the caves. This was a very good tour. We saw a lot of the city and had a great tour guide, the caves were also very interesting to see. The price was very good. It cost us 50 $ for the tour per person. The entrance to the caves was about 10 Euros and the bus transfer to the city would have cost us about 20 $. In Corsica we took a taxi to a very nice beach and this was way cheaper than the tour and we could stay much longer. Corsica is very beautiful. We did not take the tour to Rom since it was way too expensive. And yes we also stood in line in the heat and to come back on board. All over we thought Royal Caribbean has went to massive tourism which is very sad to have noticed. And the smoking is not tolerable for non-smokers. We have sailed with them 4 times now and would not do it again. Maybe when they change their smoking policy and not start from Spain. As we heard the Adventure will start next year from Southampton for a two week cruise. Maybe this is an alternative, but as long as they do not change the smoking on the verandas it is not worth going. There are other cruises lines who do not allow smoking on the verandas like Celebrity, which by the way belongs to Royal Caribbean. Read Less

From the moment we entered our cabin we noticed the carpet was filthy and ill fitting(we had it cleaned after complaining which did seem to remove the vile odours that were evident before). The door to the cabin had a gap of at least one inch wide from floor to around the height of the handle, thus light was streaming in all night and noise was more noticeable, also we had to make sure we lent on the door to make sure it closed.Towels were stained and poor quality. The cabin has an adjoining door to another cabin (locked as we booked alone). Noise levels were high from adjoining cabins. Although there is a good amount of storage there is no flat screen television and picture quality is very poor. DECK 4 the carpet in bar by Jesters was permanently being dried out with a peculiar odour similar to vomit noticeable when seated at Schooner Bar. Through out the ship it was noticeable that carpets were worn or raised due to age. The whole ship had a very tired look about it. This has always been one of our favourite ships for food, friendliness of staff and a comfortable relaxing experience. However on this occasion it was the complete opposite. On various occasions having asked for certain drinks we were flatly told they did not have them in that particular bar (no offer to obtain one for us from another bar) It was as if it was too much trouble, this happened in the pool bar, Dog and duck pub and casino bar. Apart from the last night when the barmaid made the effort to find the requested drink(which was a can of john smiths). MAIN RESTAURANT our first table was with 6 Spanish people. We live in Spain however my partner does not speak Spanish so I would have spent the entire time translating had we not moved tables. Moved from Strauss to Vivaldi. We were seated with a family of four and two couples all English and very nice company which went a long way to make up for the food. Numerous times the food arrived and was cold or tasteless and much smaller portions. The choices had been reduced from previous voyages and so had the quality. Our Head waiter informed us the chef was being replaced in two weeks and a new menu would be on offer. No good for us but hopefully better quality, flavour and imagination. Due to poor weather only one day of sunbathing, this was the usual walking around for 20 minutes to find a sun lounger as despite signs advising passengers not to reserve beds nothing was done to enforce this. We were invited to a Platinum and above afternoon where we ended up leaving as we could not get a drink in spite of asking 3 separate members of staff, again very poor service. WINDJAMMER cafe had dirty cups on numerous occasions and people were handling unwrapped cutlery several times prior to choosing the desired article(Not exactly the best way to avoid stomach aches by other peoples germs.)Having selected your food it was a complete nightmare trying to find a table to sit at, there was no help from staff in locating empty seats. Only once were we offered a drink whilst seated eating in the windjammer. CASINO offered poker tournaments yet held them at 10pm whilst second seating was still dining. Cash games of poker were instigated by the customers as the casino made no effort to promote them. Apart from a couple of croupiers who could do with a lot more training the rest of the staff were very good. The casino bar is the friendliest bar on the ship with very efficient and friendly staff. DISEMBARKATION. Well it was a case of weve had your money and now we dont want to know. I could rattle on for longer about all the other things that were wrong but i think you get the Gist. Read Less

My husband and I booked our first cruise on Adventure of the Seas out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. We loved Puerto Rico and have always wanted to travel there; however, leaving from San Juan became problematic for us. First, it is very hot and you have to wait a really long time in line to get onto the ship. we later were told that the people charged with letting passengers in took bribes to allow people to jump in line. So, we finally got onto the ship and began to explore as we had never cruised before. We were excited about going to the Caribbean as well as we were battling snowstorms at home. Our room was very nice and we were warned that cruise ships have small rooms. It was a balcony room and we were pleased with the size of it. I loved sitting on the balcony in the morning sun. The good: Our room steward was great and we really enjoyed the towel animals he made for us each day. He was efficient and honestly, working constantly. We wondered if he had a day off. Our two waiters at dinner - Yulia and Bogdan were wonderful and in the end, they helped make this not an altogether horrible cruise. The food in the Mozart dining area was great. We had no complaints. However, this room was open for breakfast and lunch only on the days we were at sea. The rest of the time we had to eat at the Windjammer Cafe which is a buffet. The bad: The Windjammer Cafe. I can't tell you how horrible the food was. One day they made what they called paella. After smelling it, I advised my husband not to eat it. It was made with orzo instead of rice and smelled fishy. The food was geared to the majority of the crowd on the ship which were Spanish people, which is okay if it's done correctly. It was crowded with people pushing past you, elbowing you out of the way, not moving but standing and having conversations as you tried to get by. I got deathly ill on this trip and was ill for a month after coming home. I can't say definitively what I had, but I can tell you others on the ship had it as well. I called down to room service one day after spending the night being sick, and I asked that they send me up some broth which I was told they had on the children's menu (chicken noodle soup). I called them at 3:30. They refused to send me the broth saying they couldn't send it before 4:00 PM. My husband went to every restaurant onboard and asked for broth or clear soup and nobody had it. I called back and 4 and at 4:30 I had clear broth. I explained to them I had been sick and vomiting and they didn't care. So much for service. The people on board (some 4 to a room) were rude, pushy, demanding and demeaning. They'd walk 3 across in the hall and wouldn't move to let you by. They wouldn't let you get out of the elevator before they pushed past you to get in. One day as the band by the pool took a break, many jumped up on stage and took over the band's instruments. Security had to remove them. There was no going to the Promenade Cafe because it was pretty much taken up with the cruisers every day and every evening. The same for the pool or anywhere on deck for that matter. Our last night was the final straw. I was still sick in bed and it was our last night and we tried to get some sleep. At 1 AM our next door neighbors were drunk, singing, fighting, yelling, crying, etc, and we called security. Nothing. We called again. Nothing. The third time my husband stuck his head around our balcony onto theirs and spoke to them in Spanish asking them to shut up because his wife was sick and it was 1 in the morning. That seemed to help. There is smoking on the balconies and we weren't informed of this. Sitting on the balcony was sometimes impossible due to cigarette smoke. Also, people threw things off their balconies - paper, cigarette butts, food. We spoke with several other cruisers who were experienced cruisers and they all said this was the worst cruise they had ever been on. One lady had been on 35 cruises. All entertainment seemed to take place at 11 at night. Since that is a little late for us, we missed a great deal of it. We were so happy to get off in San Juan and head to the airport. We called our travel agent and told her what happened and she was so apologetic we felt bad for her. She encouraged us to write to RC and let them know what happened on our cruise. We received a letter back telling us they were sorry and hoped we'd give them another chance. Our instructions to her were to never book us another cruise on this cruise line. They were unresponsive and uncaring. We paid full price and found many cruisers who were locals in San Juan paid less than half of what we did. All in all, the best part was ziplining in St. Kitts and snorkeling in St. Thomas. All of our great times happened when we were off this ship. Read Less

On March 3, 2013, we sailed on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas to St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Aruba, and Curacao. I have been on one other cruise, which was on Carnival's Sensation. The Carnival cruise was 10,000 times better than Royal Caribbean. First, we were very disappointed in the food. On the Carnival cruise ship, people admired other people's plates because the food looked so good, and they shared their meals because the food tasted so good. However, on the Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas, food was cold at times. For example, people at my table were served cold hamburgers and french fries and cold chicken. In addition, the meats were often too tough and dry. The bread was hard and cold, and the desserts were not that great. As a person who doesn't cook much, I was looking forward to another great food experience on a cruise ship, but this was a total disappointment. The food was worse than what I could get at an average buffet in my home city. We asked if we could be seated in another dining room to see if the food would be any better, but the purser who told me he'd call us never followed up. Second, the room is too small. We had to squeeze past each other to move in that room. Also, the shower was a narrow cylinder. You had to open the doors to have room to shave your legs. Third, I called the "1-800" Royal Caribbean phone line before booking the cruise to ask if I could bring seashells home from the islands. One of the main reasons that I chose this cruise was because we enjoy collecting shells, and I had heard that St. Kitts and Aruba have pretty shells. The person on the phone--who works for Royal Caribbean--told me that she didn't know the shell policy. However, it became apparent when our shells were taken away from us and many other people--as we saw boxes of shells under the security tables--that it is Royal Caribbean's policy to not allow shells on the ship. They should have told me the truth about this as it was a key factor in my decision to choose this itinerary and ship, and I find it hard to believe that the woman I spoke to didn't know the shell policy after seeing the number of shells that were taken from people. Fourth, a lot of the employees on the ship were not friendly, and this surprised me as the Carnival ship was very pleasant consistently. On the Adventure of the Seas, it was hit or miss. I do want to mention a few really nice people, though. Our stateroom attendant, Rafael Soares, was wonderful. He is very welcoming, intelligent, and polite. We really appreciated his outstanding customer service. Also, the woman who greeted people at the Windjammer Cafe was always smiling and friendly. Also, the man in the gym who did the presentation on feet problems was very good. Also, one of the handful of casino people I met (a beautiful brunette with long hair who I think said she was from Romania) was very fun to be around. Otherwise, again, I was mostly disappointed in the customer service of the crew. Fifth, the shows were just okay, with the exception of the ice-skating show, which was fabulous! Since the food and the shows should be highlights of a cruise, we were not happy with this ship. Also, since they were not forthcoming about their seashell policy and most of them weren't very friendly, I feel that they just wanted my money and didn't care if I had a good time once they got it.   Read Less

I really enjoy cruises as one of three main types of holiday that my partner and I take. To us, a cruise is a great way to 'sample' countries and destinations and to be made to feel special. One of our ports was labelled as Seville. Cadiz is NOT Seville (which is about 50km inland). As the itinerary listed Livorno and Civitavecchia - why claim Seville when you are docking at Cadiz? We have taken a number of cruises and with various cruise lines. We'd not cruised with Royal Caribbean before - but had sailed with other brands that are part of the Royal Caribbean group. We live in London and took the train down to Southampton. We arrived about an hour before final embarkation and that worked well, no queues, straight on to the ship and to our cabin. We had a Family Oceanview stateroom - spacious for the two of us and overlooking the helicopter pad at the front of the ship. A consistent frustration for us (that I heard echoed by many other passengers) was the lack of inside public space. Time and again we would come out of dinner, want to listen to music in the various bars and venues and NO SEATS. This appeared a problem throughout the ship - not just in one venue. Also the dreadful 'musak' in all public spaces. Why not have a couple of lounges that are free of this menace. The weather on this sailing was not great, even on days when it was dry it was very windy so reduced opportunities to sit on deck. Dining was adequate - no more. This was the first ship where if you wanted lobster it was a large supplement ($34). I rapidly grew very fed up (no pun intended) with mashed potato, broccoli and carrots with most evening meals. Also there were only three courses for dinner, most other cruises offer five. On previous cruises the served breakfast times were often brought forward to accommodate early docking in ports. On Adventure it almost seemed to be used to give Hotel operations an opportunity to reduce the number of guests likely to use that option - often served breakfast was only available around an hour after we had docked. Not useful if you want to make the most of your limited time in port. When we were in port, the only option available was Windjammer cafe (we nicknamed it The Zoo), and you could struggle to find a table. This was a real shame, the highlight of the food options was an excellent salad bar (made for you) in the Dining room - that never opened on a port day. We tried the American Diner - Johnny Rockets once - $4.95 cover charge. We didn't bother a second time - nothing special, corny dancing by the staff every 30 minutes. Entertainment was a mixed bag. The dancers and singers were very average, the second comedian repeated many jokes from the first and when the ice show was on (one show repeated four times across two days) there was no entertainment in the theatre on those nights. The ice show was good, considering the small size of the rink. However, an ice rink at sea is not a major factor on my choice of ships. The activities were very standard - trivia, bingo, cringe making game shows. It was frustrating that the inline skating circuit appeared badly designed and did not drain very easily. The merest hint of water and it was out of bounds for health and safety reasons. The staff did not seem very happy. Our stateroom attendant did her best to keep a stateroom that needed more maintenance / refurbishment. The chairs / sofa badly needed heavy duty steam cleaning. Our waiter was good, his assistant was poor. The assistant still couldn't remember our preferences for water and coffee by the end of the cruise. We did our own thing in port. Royal Caribbean laid on an expensive shuttle bus in Lisbon at $15 per person. The guy who did the port talks did his best to avoid discussing public transport options in Lisbon and the train station was less than five minutes from where you docked. I doubt it would have cost more than a couple of euros to get into the centre of Lisbon. In summary, we cruise to be made to feel special. Royal Caribbean made us feel like numbers that were a logistical challenge - nothing more. I doubt we will cruise with them again. Read Less

We have sailed with Royal Carribean 4 times with all the previous others turning out to be enjoyable experiences on well run ships with excellent crew. What has gone wrong with Royal Carribean, or perhaps Adventure of the Seas is a one off and so badly managed that it seems to be run for the benefit of the crew not the passengers. Boarding at Southampton was brilliant, smooth efficient and we were on board within the hour. We decided to have lunch in the Windjammer Restaurant but we were forced to go round and round trying to find a table to sit at. This we found out was the norm as you had to hunt for tables at both breakfast and lunch. The food was not too bad although mostly luke warm other than the egg station which was brilliant, serving you omelettes and eggs to order that were hot and tasty. The main dining room was split over three floors,and served meals that were reasonable but rather lacking in taste. Mashed patato seemed to be a favourite with the chef as it seemed to appear on most meals and I hope I do not have to eat it again for a long time.Coffee was free but after 9.00 pm trying to obtain a cup was nearly impossible as the Windjammer was then closed and with a full theatre and second meal sitting over, all you had was a very small cafe bar which was always full at this time Our stateroom was rather tired with lumpy beds, filthy sofa and carpet and seemed to not have had a proper clean for years. We were asked to nominate members of staff that gave us the wow factor but other than the excellent entertainment manager,the waiter that met passengers outside the Windjammer and the waiter and assistant waiter in the dinning room, we were unable to find any others. Staff generally seemed to be more concerned looking for an easy life for themselves, were sometimes abrupt and rude and seemed to exist making life difficult for their paying passengers. The Shows in the theatre and ice rink were mainly excellent and enjoyed by the majority although on one night in port the theatre was closed, the shops were closed and all the seats were taken throughout the ship.Perhaps in warmer climes that the ship had been sailing in this was not a problem but outside in Iceland and Norway this was not an option. The weather was not kind so some of the ports and excursions suffered but others were brilliant. Our higlights were the midnight sun in the artic circle, spotting large numbers of whales in northern Iceland and the other passengers on our table for eight. Disembarkation was rather a shambles but we managed to find our luggage and were away.We enjoyed our trip but not the Adventure of the Seas. Read Less

Very mixed experience, ship felt very overcrowded and we had to queue for everything. Waited for 20 minutes to be served at the Ben and Jerry's/ Starbucks counter and then gave up waiting. Found it difficult to find tables and seats in the Windjammer restaurant and in bars and other seating areas. Evening meal table was in a very poor location, tucked in a corner with the only view into the clearing away area. Restaurant staff were really attentive and friendly. Food was high quality. Not much variety or suitable things for kids mostly just pizza and chips. We were sat with other people for evening meal and if we went to a sit down breakfast. There wasn't a choice, we would have preferred to sit on our own as it was awkward at times.Had 2 promenade view cabins with interconnecting doors, cabins good, very clean, stewards were fantastic. Was worried cabin would be noisy as above a bar but sound proofing very good. Would recommend having outside cabin or balcony as constantly having artificial lighting is unpleasant as lighting is very dim.Everything on board is very expensive and when docking in port bus transfers out of the port were $15 each, even for the children. We avoided the coach and got local taxis which were much cheaper. Sea pass cards are used to pay for things. Kids can use theirs too which resulted in a huge arcade bill and shop bill from chocolate ($50 for 5 bars of chocolate). Excursions were really expensive $125-275 so we didn't do any.My 16 and 10 year old thought the activity clubs for their age group were old fashioned and outdated. Swimming pools were freezing so people sat in the hot tubs and swimming pools were mostly unused. The talks and activities seemed geared up to trying to sell you a product at the end of it which was a bit uncomfortable at times. Went to a Pilates class, the instructor didn't ask about injuries or offer basic beginner moves and seemed to find it amusing when a couple of people struggled with some of the exercises. Overall fitness staff were not friendly or helpful.Guest services staff were not very helpful and didn't seem to know what was happening on the ship. When we asked if they had a map of le Harvre on of the ports of call they gave us a map of Paris and insisted that was le Harvre.The ice show was fantastic and the cast who also ran the open skating sessions were brilliant. The dance show was also fantastic.Getting on and off ship and parking at Southampton hassle free and organized.Overall some highs and lows, glad we experienced a cruise but wouldn't do it again. After an absence of some ten years from Royal Caribbean Cruises, we expected some kind of refinement of services ect on our choice of ship, Adventure of the Seas. Nothing what so ever has changed, they are still the same old Royal Caribbean as we sampled 10? years ago on Voyager of the Seas. Breakfast and lunch in the Windjammer were the same old "Bun Fight" although this time without trays. Tables were at a premium with passengers using the table they eventually found to have conversations lasting long into the afternoon, some people actually used it as a Library for reading purposes but with Free Coffee! The food in the dining room was anything but Great!. On one of the formal evenings we were treated to Chicken Cordon-Blue. The only difference her was that the "Chicken" part of the meal was made from "Reconstituted Chicken", or as I prefer to say Chicken swept up from a Butchers table and fashioned into the shape of a Chicken Breast. When questioning the Head Waiter, he seemed not to want to get involved and offered to bring out the Chef. The Chef insisted that the meat on my plate was chicken, and he was absolutely correct, it was Chicken but chicken pieces from some four hundred plus chickens fashioned in to a Chicken Breast. The Chef seemed more interested in playing games with me with a "Play on words" that settling a reasonable claim that on a Cruise ship, on a "Formal Night" serving reconstituted Chicken as the main course was nothing short of an insult to passengers who paid good money and surely should be able to expect "Chicken Breasts" rather than chicken from all the other parts of the bird which had "White Meat". Nothing short of disgusting I thought, as were the inane promptings of the British Chef who knows what chicken is, that is Royal Caribbean chicken, at any rate! Cabins were rather tacky and that's being generous to RCCI, the seating area in our Cabin had a two seat settee, which I think came down into another bed. Before sitting down on this settee, you were treated to all the colours of the rainbow from the Vibrant Green which was the original colour to tacky Greenish Brown patches on the seat area to that filthy dark brown of dirt on the arms of the settee. Enrichment lecture, well that's a joke in the first place!. I do not consider one lecturer talking to a dozen people "A Lecture". That's the joke part. Anyone who has done any cruising at all knows that the entertainers are not at the peak of their profession when they are employed on Cruise Ships. Anyone saying different is a fool at best, or a liar at worst. One exception on this cruise being Bobby Davro, who was very good, as for the rest "Ordinary" describes them accurately. We had a disappointing experience on the Adventure of the Seas. We thought the ship was tired, smelly and not very clean, as did other passengers. We have cruised many times but this was the first and last time with Royal Caribbean. It was very overcrowded with not much seating in any of the public spaces. Windjammer restaurant almost impossible to get a seat. Night time diningroom staff were great, breakfast and lunch not, some quite rude to passengers. No show one night in the theatre as the captain was entertaining some passengers. There was other areas he could have used. Not enough tickets for the ice show for the number of passengers. We took the shore excursion from Vigo to Santiago de Compostela. It was worth the cost and the guide was excellent. At Gijon we were docked just in of the Atlantic next to a ship being loaded with coal. Did not appreciate that. Town was 30 minutes away. Spent a long day on board with nothing much to do. Due to bad weather we missed Bilboa and docked at le Harve for two nights. Shore excurcions were very expensive. Staff knew nothing about the area. We had to take the shuttle bus, ($15 each, only two stops) then walked to the train station and took a train to Rouen. Great place to visit. Some people went on to Paris. Glad to see Southampton again. Getting off was well organized. Read Less

11 months have passed and I still get nightmares. If you like Butlins you'll LOVE Adventure of the Seas. 4000 crammed on board - great if you like queuing for food! A really classy experience - some of the finest tattoos seen on a cruise ship anywhere! The main restaurant was okayish for dinner, but the food was of extremely poor standard. Dishes were given fancy names but this didn't disguise the fact that the fayre was rubbish. The lunch café resembled the canteen at Ford Open Prison and the buffet food was barely edible. Service was not particularly good and it pained me to leave a tip at the end of the cruise. The shows in the theatre were excellent. Just a shame that you had to take your life in your hands when you were fighting for a decent seat. Cabin (outside) was great and the guy who looked after it was smashing. If you're thinking of a cruise and you're thinking Adventure of the Seas, then think again - please!!!   Read Less

Embarkation at Southampton took about 40 minutes. I think we arrived at peak time about noon, so could have avoided queues if slightly earlier or later. It was generally stress-free and we were on the ship fairly quickly - then: the first surprise. There was a huge line to get into the Windjammer for lunch, followed by crowds of people inside searching for tables. Not a relaxing start to our vacation! Thankfully our cabins were ready by 2 pm so we went to drop of our bags and explore the ship. The cabin was in fairly good condition considering they are due for a refit soon, and was nice and clean, although I noticed there were none of those special freebies you usually get - cutbacks I suppose. Our room steward did her job very well and sometimes chatted with our four year old, but was not perky. This was another thing I noticed about many of the staff (mainly waiters and stateroom attendants) - a general feeling of depression. Maybe all these UK guests are refusing to pay their gratuities? Whatever the case, many of the staff did not seem particularly happy, but worked very, very hard. Room service was disappointing - orders were wrong, wait times of 40 minutes - this did not meet the standards we have experienced with other cruise lines. I did not think the room service menu was good either - as a vegetarian my only choices were an extremely cheesy pizza or some odd spinach dip … Another disappointment was the activities, or lack thereof. We are used to having TOO much to do on a cruise. This time we were searching through the Compass to see if there was anything at all worth doing to fill a day at sea. We had to resort to sitting in a smoky nightclub watching kids play with a plastic bow and arrow. All the quizzes were packed (nothing else to do) - in the tiny bar there was nowhere for people to sit so they were all perched on the stairs and standing around trying to join in. Absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. The ice rink was only open for the first two days. You had to arrive early to get a space which we failed to do. The pools were shut 90% of the time, along with all the other deck activities. Of course I understand they have to close these things down when the wind/rain makes it hazardous, but they remained shut all day even after the sun came out. The children’s club was oversubscribed - they knew how many children were going to be on board yet had to turn many of them away because it was "full”. Not really fair for those who have paid yet miss out due to a lack of staff. If you are going on this ship anytime soon, I would recommend getting tickets for on board (free) shows and activities asap before they all sell out. Of course the paid Portofino/excursion etc. options are always available. Be prepared to pay $10+ a each for shuttle busses in ports which are a long way from any civilisation. I think Royal Caribbean made a fortune driving passengers into town in Gijon and Bilboa - but there were no other options other than an even more expensive taxi. In the future we will probably avoid Royal Caribbean - the only thing which could tempt us back is curiosity to see one of their new innovative ships. They have gone too far with the cutbacks and should treat their staff better. We were not fooled by the Cruise Director asking us to constantly applaud them and their hard work for the last two days of the cruise. They would probably prefer higher wages.   Read Less

My Wife and I have sailed with Royal Caribbean twice before and had a wonderful time.we sailed on The Adventure of the Seas on 13th October for14 nights to France Spain and Portugal.Things have changed ,they are cutting back on a lot of things.We had lovely big Stateroom but no Toiletries provided any more,Bed was very hard and uncomfortable.They used to have wonderfull Guest lectures all thru cruise but none now,Our daytime entertainment was Bingo,Throwing Bean Bags and Inane Quizes ,Best entertainment was Rob and Drew on TV First thing in morning. Meals.Breakfast they couldn't muck about but Lunch in the Windjammer consisted of mainly the same things everyday,they had chicken and pork done in 3 different ways plus a lot of Vegittarean curries. The meals in Strauss Restaurant were tastless and cold.I had Food Poisoning on day 4 Id ordered a Lasagne,when it turned up it was 5 slices of Pasta with a heap of plain mince next to it,no cheese on top and no Tomatoe flavour,I took 2 fork fulls and could taste nothing but extremely strong saly,I cannot use salt,I sent it back and then had Pork Slices Ispent the next 3/4 daysand nights being sick and having Diahorrea,missed trips ashore because I needed to be near a toilet.Head waited advised me one night They would cook anything I liked not on Menu.I ordeed Beef Curry,It was cold and Tastless and out of 6 pieces of meat 4 1/2 were pure gristle/fat. Iwalked out of Restaurant 4 timesand each time Head Waiter came to us in the Windjammer and begged us to come back,Then he added would we give him a Excellent rating at end of Cruise or else he wouldn't get paid.Hote lManager arranged meeting with us after12 days and took all of my complaints then invited us to The Portofino Restaurantasa gust were we actually had a Fantastic meal with wine,I could go on and on but suffice to say my Wife and Iwill never sail with Royal Carribbean again,all they are interested in is getting your money,I almost for got to say there was a continual stench of sewage when walking on Deck 4 Read Less

Worst cruise EVER. This year, my newlywed wife and I decided to try something new for our honeymoon. As regular customers of Princess Cruise lines, we decided to try out Royal Caribbean in the hopes of a fresh experience in cruising. Royal seemed more suited to us, as neither of us were over 80 and we actually enjoyed moving. Royal was recommended by many that we spoke to, and we were excited by the range of on board activites offered. It seemed to be the idea replacement for Princess Cruises for somebody in our age group. It was definitely not. Please understnad this is not a comparison with Princess. They do things their way, you do think the Royal way. This is simply an explanation of why we were so disappointed with Royal, and why we consider our Honeymoon ruined. I'll break it into 3 spots, from biggest to least concerning. Food, accomodations, and staff. FOOD: In short, I've eaten better when i was in camp when I was 12. We paid a not-quite-astronomical-but-still-respectable amount of money to be on this cruise, and we expected to be fed well. Instead, it felt like we were on a light security prison ship, with volunteer inmates running the kitchen. I've eaten pictures of food with more flavor than what we were served. Let me be specific: BREAKFAST: Tasteless, watery scrambled eggs. Every. Single. Day. The revulsion I felt towards them is what I imagine POWs felt like upon seeing their daily bowl of gruel. The bacon was closer to being a burnt pigs' skin graft than it was edible food. Paper thin and almost magazine-photoshoot fake in appearance, it was only the burnt taste that allowed me to understand that I had actually put it in my mouth. It instantly dissolved once it made contact with my tongue, no chewing required and no flavor included.. The melon was a scientific breakthrough. All the moldy taste, but no visible mold! Admirable, although I'm not sure how this will benefit mankind in any positive way. The potato puffs (hash brown...thingies) tasted as if there were made of pure oil. Old, congealed oil. On the positive side, at least it tasted of cooking oil though and not motor oil. The coffee was terrible. If that truly is Seattle's Best, then Seattle should be told that sometimes giving up is the best move. Sometimes doing your best is simply not good enough, when you produce coffee that tastes like it was grown in a homeless man's underwear. Ketchup packets? Really? Ketchup packets. This isn't a gas station on the side of the highway we're eating at; its a bloody cruise ship. As a bonus, every single time we picked up a packet it had some sort of oily residue covering them. Perhaps it was discharge from the trained octopus in the back that was cooking, but still not grasping the idea of food having taste. The toast/ French toast could easily be used as floatation devices, as they seemed unable to absorb moisture, and I doubt even the fish would eat it. The chocolate milk was a nice touch, but it tasted exactly like the cardboard container it came in. I am not nor have I ever been any type of sausage maker, but I do consider myself a fan. My understanding is that sausages come with a casing. Yours seemed to simply be meat that was ground up (i'm not even sure which animals were involved) and then run through a cat's digestive system so they could poop them out on a plate. They were, by far, the oddest sausages I have ever seen. I should not come back from a cruise confused and worried by the structure of breakfast sausages. I love breakfast, but it took two meals before I relegated myself to eating nothing but Fruit Loops. For 5 days, I ate Fruit Loops and Cheerios. Thankfully they were actually fruit loops, and not some sinister, visually similar replacement like the rest of breakfast. LUNCH: Every day it was the same thing. Lunch was more like being in Bill Murray's Groundhog day than being in reality. I had to check my phone every lunch to make sure that we had indeed moved a day forward. What few minor variants were offered were sad. Cold, fatty spare ribs with Kraft BBQ sauce. Some sort of chicken which seemed to have been forgotten in the oven and burnt. I actually suspect it was a biohazard that was supposed to be incinerated, but instead was served to us. Again, Kraft BBQ sauce. Soggy, overcooked pasta in flavorless white sauce. The Hamburgers literally had no taste. After 3 bites i actually had to open my mouth and get my wife to visually check that there was, in fact, food in my mouth. She was able to confirm that I did eat the hamburger, as did several unimpressed guests nearby. Hotdogs were fine. The strawberries were particularly entertaining. A lovely shade of red on the outside, they were snow white inside and very firm. I can easily picture somebody on the boat with an airbrush who's sole job is to paint them to make them look edible. I'd love to see their official job title. DINNER : To be fair, it wasn't terrible. I'd rate the dinners in the dining room at about 2.5/5 stars. Thankfully our servers were so incredibly nice and personable, otherwise I'd have to rate it even lower. The little steaks were cute, but sad. Edible on one side, tougher than shoes on the other. Escargot was good; the wife ate it by the ton. Might suggest a little cheese on them though, not just half a pound of butter. You guys actually did a great job with the fish, surprisingly. Fish is hard to make for two people, let alone thousands. Good job. Portofinos just sucked. I went in there with the hopes of having a nice, thick and juicy steak. I even confided with the wait staff (who were great, btw) that this was my hail mary, my one chance at having a meal that was actually palatable. Instead I was served a second rate T-bone worthy of the US's least visited Denny's. Actually, I take that back. In Puerto Rice I actually went to Denny's and had a steak, and it was much better than the one on the ship. Strangely, the fish the wife ordered was very sub par. How do you guys manage to mass produce fish well for the dining room, but screw it up on single servings? Fascinating. Service was very good though. I'd like to know who the genius was that decided that the frozen ice cream should be closed just as people got back on the boat from the island. We get back on at 5:30, Ice Cream closes at 6.Whoever made that decision should be pushed off the boat. When it's in dry dock. Thank god for the 24 hour pizza. It was always warm, tasty, and really the only food highlight on the boat. Pizza should NEVER be the highlight for your food offerings on a cruise. Thats just sad. STAFF: I got ice cream (when I was lucky enough to get there before it closed) and after gratefully accepting my frozen treat and thanking the server, was met with a look as if I had urinated on him. I know serving the frozen yogurt isn't the most prestigious position on the ship (probably still higher than Strawberry painter though) but I didn't put them there, so I don't deserve that attitude. One morning leaving the ship, we were at the gangplank looking for towels. See we had assumed that being a cruise line the staff would understand the principals of swimming getting your wet, and then requiring a towel to try off. When we asked about were the towels were, we were told we'd have to go back to the 11th deck to get them. When I cited my displeasure at this (its annoying, really) I was told that they had towels earlier, and that "next time I should get up earlier". We were there at 10:30 am. Silly me. Here I thought I was on vacation, while clearly I was actually in boot camp. I forgot my camera charger at home, because I apparently like making my life more difficult. When I went down to the photography studio, I noticed your staff all use Nikon, like I do. I inquired about dropping off my battery to be charge, clearly indicating I'd be fine if there was a slight fee. Instead, I was pushed towards buying a universal charger, which every photographer knows is a very poor device, and is the product of a Taiwanese lunatic asylum arts and crafts project. 4 times I was pushed toward buying this electronic turd, with me explaining each time that I didn't want it. It seemed like No did not mean No here.I understand that its not their job to charge my battery, and that its my own fault for forgetting it. I also know that its 1 hour to charge the battery, and that its the good thing to do to keep a passenger happy. I did have one photographer offer on the side to help me out, but thankfully I found another way to get it charged. The Captain of that boat  7:30 AM and this guy is blaring lion king music over your craptastic speaker system. (My phone can reproduce better sound than your boat). I do NOT appreciate being woken up so early by this guys indecipherable caffine fueled raving gibberish while I am on vacation. I literally jumped out of bed one morning swearing ready to fight, as his sudden blast of morning was so loud and distorted (plus all the feedback) that I thought somebody had burst into the room. I am aware that we can turn down the announcements in our cabin (which we did first thing) but unfortunately that did little to suppress his ranting because.... THE ACCOMODATIONS : I am sure there are rooms in a Turkish prison that are nicer than ours. When you renovate the boat, might I suggest sound proofing the cabins. With ours, we were delighted to hear every single noise that happened in the hallway with THX clarity. It was almost as if our room were an observatory, studying human behavior in a moving hallway. Conversations, the spoiled screaming kid down the hall, and of course Captain Screamyface's morning tourettes outbreaks were vibrantly and lovingly delivered to our sleeping ears every day, through our closed door. I can only imagine the pleasure the wife and I brought to people in the hallway during our honeymoon moments. I kept picturing crowds of people standing outside, and when I went to leave the room they'd all hold up score cards. I'd like to think I'd have done well. The beds were perfectly designed so that when you kneeled down to get into them, there was a nice hard bar which was the perfect width to get right in between your kneecap and the bone. Thankfully the little limp I developed was mistaken by the locals to be style and not a sign of weakness. Nothing is quite so exhilarating as a hot shower on a sunburnt body. Really reminds you that you're alive, and partially broiled. Thankfully our shower had no cold setting, so we got to experience that joyous feeling every single day, 2-3 times a day. Bracing! Love the TV that swiveled towards the bed...partially. It did bring us together nicely since we both had to be on the far side of the bed to see it. I will say that our room steward was great, and did an excellent job. We are not completely mad. How could we be? Were were in the Caribbean at a time when most of our friends were up to their butts in snow. That, and we are quite happy spending time together which I feel will be a bonus to this whole marriage deal. I will say that I am HUGELY disappointed in Royal and this cruise. What DID make me mad was Royal Caribbean's response to all of this. Immediately upon my return I tried to contact them to voice my displeasure. First, their website didn't work. Then, the phone system didn't pick up. Once I did get a hold of somebody, they were so useless that I think the only real viable option for them in life was as a human Slinky toy, bringing amusement to others as they fall down stairs. I did finally speak to a representative at Royal Caribbean, and was basically told that this is how their cruises are, and they would do nothing. They also told me they never receive complaints on their cruises (of course not) and this was the first they've heard of issues on Adventure of the Seas. I find this fascinating, as every single person we spoke to on the cruise expressed disappointment with the food and ship, with all saying that this was NOT standard Royal experience. I can only suggest to others to avoid going on Adventure of the Seas. Perhaps avoid Royal too. I can say that in all the cruises I have been on, I've never been treated with such blatant disregard after expressing what I feel are valid points. Thanks for ruining our Honeymoon Royal. We have cruised Royal Caribbean many times and I have to say I was very disappointed. 1- Getting on the ship was the worst I have ever seen. I was very surprised when the taxi dropped us off and we had to drag all of our baggage to where they load them in the bins to go on the ship. Of course we tipped them but I think that was to ensure the luggage got to the room. 2-Check in was super, however there were 3 people in our cabin, which meant 6 pieces of luggage. Only 1 piece was actually delivered to our cabin. We found our other pieces in front of other cabins. 3-Our cabin steward was super as was our waiter. 4-The food was not as good as it usually is.. 5-The ports were super. 6-I was very disappointed in the lack of staff. When we were in the windjammer finding a server for drinks was always a chore. I couldn't believe the lack of service. Twice we had accidental spills. One time on the table at the cafe on the promenade. We scrambled for napkins to clean it up. No help was offered. Another time I spilled milk on the floor on the way to the table. Two different staff members walked by and never attempted to wipe it up. By the pool you had to hunt for a person if you wanted a drink 7-I know the ship is going in for renovations. Believe me it long over due. Lights did not light up in the elevator and you could just barely hear the person announce the floor. Our toilet stopped up on the first day. The refrigerator was jus barely cool. It hardly cooled water to drink which meant the beer and soda was not drinkable. The numbers on the safe were worn off...ended up it stuck and they had too drill it open and replace the door. 8-All that said we booked Royal for next year. I think it was a fluke. 9-I got the $20 per day drink package. You couldn't get coke at all bars because they didn't all have fountain soda. We chose Royal Caribbean for our first cruise because I thought they had a great reputation. However, instead that fact was proven to be very incorrect. We flew to San Juan on March 16 and proceeded to board the ship very quickly without any problems. Our luggage didn't arrive in our cabin until 7PM so we were unable to change for our 6:00PM dinner. Later that night we were on our way to St Thomas and arrived the next morning. The third day we arrived at St Kitts. That's when the problem started. We were informed that we could no longer travel to Aruba (one of the ports we were really looking forward to going) or Curacao because of mechanical problems with the ship. Instead we would be going to Antigua, St Maartins and St Croix. We were also told that Aruba was too far south and if we continued on that course we would never make it back to San Juan on time. Once we arrived at Antigua, they continued to work on fixing the ship's mechanical problems. However, instead of leaving that evening we were unable to set sail until the next morning. We spent 2 days in port at St Maartins. Which I'm sure would have been fine except there were 6 cruise ships in port and everything was very crowded. On our second day in St Maartins, the captain informed us that we would be heading back to San Juan and would be traveling at about 5 knots. After we left the island we headed out to sea at a reduced speed. The following day the main engines were shut down to try and do more repairs. We were dead in the water for a full day. Finally we were limping back to San Juan. We arrived so late that many of the passengers missed their flights. Fortunately, I arrived at my gate with less than a 1/2 hour to spare before we boarded our plane. While at the airport some of the security told us that our ship had a similar problem the week before and people missed their flights. Read Less

Worst experience we have had from front desk, security,and dining room staff. Often we felt we were being singled out for bad service (I have 40+ years in customer service). Security decided they needed to have me open a bag and then proceeded to search through it with bare hands, rifling through my shaving kit/toiletries because of my barber scissors I carry to trim my beard and mustache. Then the person wants to see my CPAP and grabs it - putting his finger inside the air outlet. Refused to back off when I explained I did not want him touching my stuff. Then started going through my clothing. At no time was he wearing gloves and there was no hand sanitizer in the area. Dining was a real challenge. Food quality has gone down - with a couple of exceptions. (FYI - Best food deal on the ship is Johnny Rockets - hamburgers are awesome and it is $5 for all you care to eat). My traveling companion has a food allergy. The staff appeared to understand but repeatedly served food that was supposed to have been "specially" prepared for her. Often it wasn't and it seemed to humor the dining staff when she had a reaction. On the last night we simply got up from the table and left to go to the Windjammer. The tenor of this cruise was set on day one and never changed. Now I wait to see what horrid disease may be incubating in my body because of security's lack of contamination procedures (we did meet with the head of security and he assured the matter was being addressed and protocols were in place. As we got on and off the ship at each port it was still hit or miss.) Will strongly consider other cruise lines. Read Less

The refurbishment of the ship in April was not very extensive, many of the public areas are looking very tired. The biggest change was to replace the very nice Italian restaurant Portofino with a very ordinary Italian restaurant called Giovanni's table. From the low end cutlery and crockery, cheap table cloth and "rustic" menu, you know this is another cost cutting exercise by the bean-counters at Royal Carribean. You still pay a $20 surcharge, but now the food is no better than in the main dining room. We spoke to a number of crew members who were equally unimpressed by the change. Perhaps on the larger ships with many dining options Giovanni's Table has a place. However, on a ship with only one "Special" restaurant it is a big mistake. Johnny Rockets on Adventure of The Seas is also below the standard of other Royal Carribean ships. Certainly way below independence of the seas. The music is either not played or too quiet to hear, the dancing waiters are half hearted and the signature greeting on arrival and departure only happens about one time in five. It's as if the staff are bored with the concept and can't be bothered to do it for the benefit of the guests. Having said that the burgers and milk shakes are still worth the trip! I used to enjoy a fine Cuban cigar on the balcony, watching the sunset, but since January of this year smoking on balconies has been banned. (Nice of them not to mention this last August when we booked!) The cigar lounge was also very poorly stocked, with a great menu of cigars, only about three of which were actually available. The new smoking policy is not coherent as signs on the stateroom balconies still remind you to ensure all smoking materials are extinguished, even though you are now not allowed to smoke. The alcohol policy is also a mess. Previously it was forbidden to bring any alcohol on board. This time at Southampton guests were bringing on wine. The service staff at check in seemed unclear, one said that a new policy allowed a certain number of wine bottles to be brought on, another staff member thought alcohol was still banned. The onboard literature states alcohol cannot be brought onboard, but then refers to a corkage charge if you drink your own. Total confusion reigns! The penny pinching is getting worse, it started when they stopped sending out luggage labels and wanted you to make your own by printing them off and using Sellotape! Now gratuities are automatically added to your account each day and 15% is automatically added to all drinks, yet the new electronic payment terminals still try and squeeze further tips from you every time you buy a coffee on the promenade. The up selling by the staff is also intrusive, if you go to the spa you get a hard sell on products and repeat appointments, if you eat in Giovanni's expect to be bombarded with discount offers to book for three or more meals in advance. I get the feeling that Royal Carribean are pushing down market, perhaps trying to increase the difference between this offering and their celebrity range. The final product is heading towards an all inclusive holiday camp. If you want a mass market, nothing special, ship then Adventure of the Seas may be perfect for you. however, if you enjoy fine dining, good wine or want to enjoy a nice cigar then I would not recommend this ship   Read Less

We booked our May 23rd sailing aboard Adventure of the Seas following our first ever cruise in October 2012 on Adventure’s sister ship Navigator of the Seas. That cruise was just my wife and I, this time we had our 15 year old daughter with us. In summary, the ports of call were delightful, especially Flam, but not so the boat. Royal Caribbean is marketing their cruises as having “Wow” factor. Sad to say, our experience has us saying, “Wow, I can’t believe things could deteriorate so much, so quickly” We sailed from Southampton. Despite dire warnings of dreadful traffic, we were not held up too much and made it to our parking spot with APB, who had cheerful attendants to take our luggage straight from us and pop it in their vans for delivery to the ship, so no lugging cases to check in. Check in was a breeze, just a couple of families in front of us and then another cheerful soul checked us in, handed over the sea passes and we were on our way up to deck 5 and onboard. So at least arrival and boarding were good. This was around 12:15 so there was another hour or so before the cabins would be ready for the passengers. Being lunchtime we headed for Windjammer. Sadly, Windjammer was a venue where one of the most noticeable deteriorations in quality was experienced. In 2012 we enjoyed going there, picking something from the variety of foods which rotated through the week. The food always proved to be nice; especially considering it was buffet style. Now the same food was mostly put out each day, and left under the hot lights until it had dried out and hardened. My daughter’s pancakes one morning, had she not put chocolate sauce over them, would have worked very nicely as shuffleboard pucks. Speaking of things being under the hot lamps for too long, she burned her thumb on the plastic tongs one morning as they had become so hot. Breakfast on day 2 did not seem well organised – huge queues at Windjammer and the Main Dining Room. I suspect that the Royal Caribbean Bean Counters have decided that along with dropping the food quality in Windjammer, they can do away with much of the waiting staff. I never saw a waiter killing time; they were always on the go doing their best to clear the tables and fulfil guest requests. But the tables were often cluttered with old crockery and mess from previous diners. Especially during the 3-5 afternoon slot. On one occasion, my wife came across a large spill of water. Afraid that someone would slip in it, she stood guard hoping a waiter would clear it up. She had to shout out to get attention before someone took a mop to the spillage. When one of the supervisors asked how we were enjoying the food, I politely told him the truth. I suspect he gets that a lot as he requested I tell Royal Caribbean. I’m sure he and his staff are getting a lot of grief courtesy of the cutbacks and there’s nothing they can do. (I have reported it to Royal Caribbean and even spoken to reprehensive, but they don’t seem to want to rectify this – or indeed any of my complaints) There was one lunchtime when a variety was made to the menu – a Taco cart had been wheeled out. Unfortunately, when we arrived there were no taco shells. I had hoped by the time we found an empty table and fetched our drinks they would have been replenished. Not so. Several minutes later it was still empty. I tracked down a supervisor who instead of getting more taco shells announced she was going to close it to get ready for the afternoon tea slot of 3 to 5 pm. This was still an hour away. Wow! Don’t give the customer what they want. If it’s a sales ploy to get people to cough up some bucks and eat in the speciality restaurant, it’s not working. I found out later in the week that room service would have been a better option. A very limited menu yes but the food was superior to Windjammer. Still on the subject of Windjammer – on Navigator, in October 2012, the windows were kept clean. Each time in port, you’d see a crew member scrubbing them from the outside. On Adventure all you saw in port was all the grime that had been added to the windows since the previous port. Wow! Anywhere else they’d care to make cuts? All of the family enjoy the theatre and good shows. Navigator for the most part delivered good shows. But now the shows in the main theatre were mostly a case of, “Wow, is that really the best they could find?” With one very notable exception that I’ll mention later. On the first night, the show started promisingly. Good to see the bean counters had not replaced the live band with a click track. Said band was very good. Then four singers who would have sounded more at home in a low grade karaoke bar brought things down with a resounding thump. In the subsequent nights, one of these singers was able to pull something back, but not so the other three. We asked other guests, without leading them, what they thought of the shows, as in, “Did you see the show last night?” Turned out everyone we asked was of the same opinion. So it was not just us. The guest act on opening night was Tucker, an adult comedian. Much as I like a good dirty joke; early evening to a family audience is not the place for it. Nor singing to a three year old you’ve been picking on all evening, the old song about Postman Pat killing his cat by running it over or having a toy dog hump his leg. No surprise a lot of people were walking out of the show. Unfortunately, the cruise director Rob got caught up in it and added his own smut to the evening. The production shows, with exception of one singer, the band and the shortest of the girl dancers was like watching a rehearsal where they are just blocking the moves and going through the motions. The entertainment industry is bursting with talented singers and dancers who are out of work, surely the casting team can find some of them to populate the stage. There was a ballroom couple, who were merely competent. Not a patch on the couple we saw on Navigator who did have the Wow factor. There was a Bee Gees tribute band which we did not see, so I can’t comment on them. But the one decent act we did see was Graffiti Classics. This was an instance of “Wow, they finally booked a great act”. If you get a chance to see them on land or sea, take it. They were superb. Very funny, very talented musicians and they showed just how poor the rest of the entertainment was. The closing night act was a magician who for the most part did basic tricks you’d find in any half-decent magic set you could buy from a toy shop. I’ll acknowledge some nice interaction with an audience member whilst doing an old card tick and a nice variation on the floating table trick. Shame the stage hand gave away how the trick was done when taking the table off the stage. Some of the singers and musicians found in fluctuating locations about the ship were OK, but I thought that karaoke must have been going on in the Schooner Bar as someone was missing all the notes. Turned out it was not a drunken tone deaf X-Factor wanna’ be, but the actual lady playing the piano. Wow! Suddenly the Theatre singers were not as bad in comparison. The Cafe Promendade on Navigator had a nicely rotating selection of sandwiches and cakes. Adventures had the same old stuff out most of the week. Apart from an absence of cookies on the last couple of days. There was one surprise hit – on the first day, our daughter had a pasty from the café. It was really nice. We must assume that said pasty contravened company regulations of providing self service food with no flavour as they were never to be seen for the rest of the trip. Another missing thing from Navigator was where they had different flavoured water in the café every day. But now it’s just plain water. As I post on Cruise Critic we signed up to the meet and mingle. On getting there they had run out of name card holders and the free gifts, which we were promised would be delivered to our cabin (they never were). Some food was laid on – which turned out to be a pile of cheese. That was it. Dry cheese. Nothing else not so much as a cracker in sight. The chap hosting it said hello to four people, did the sales pitch, ran a raffle then ended the session. Given we had nowhere to put the name badges, mingling was made more difficult and with no encouragement to get folks to mingle, they all left after the raffle. Reading the boards, other ships apparently get the folks together with some simple introduction games and then let nature take its course. No such actions here. One of the features of the Voyager ships that Royal Caribbean publicises is the ice skating rink. What they did not say it that they keep it closed for most of the trip. It was open only on the last day at sea, and for an hour and a half on another day. Unsurprisingly, unless you were willing to wait in queues on that last day you did not get to skate. Wow! Misleading brochure. Technically correct, there is an ice rink on board, but dishonest as they fail to day the thing is rarely open. I could keep going on about other little bits and pieces that together helped to add up to making this a poor trip, but the worst was the apparent lack of customer safety displayed by Royal Caribbean. I’ve already covered the spillage in Windjammer that my wife ended up having to stand over to prevent an accident. We also had to get in touch with maintenance to repair dangerous carpet on the stairway and an electric door switch hanging off the wall in one of the ladies bathrooms – water and electricity, not the safest of combinations. But the biggie was when I grabbed a hand rail going up the stairs when the ship was rocking. It had been covered in something that made it very slippery. Fortunately, as I was going up the stairs I was OK. Had I been going down the stairs, at best I’d have ended up picking carpet out of my teeth. There was a crew member with a spray and cloth who had just coated the rail in some anti-bacterial substance. I pointed out how dangerous it was to leave the rail that slippery. His reply was to say that he’s been told to do it every hour and if I’m not happy to complain. So I did. I reported it to the customer service desk and was told they’d pass it on to management. I tried to point out that given the rocky seas we were in and that many passengers would not be as sure footed as I, a very nasty accident could happen. But all I was told was that they’d pass it on. The next day I followed up to see if anything had happened. I was told that the manager had been made aware. They may have been made aware but the course of action chosen was to completely ignore the danger. That evening we encountered a cleaner coating the rails in the same substance and leaving it there, as slippery as ever. I went back to the main desk to register my additional complaint that the danger has been ignored. I took up the offer to talk to a manager. However, no manager was prepared to talk to me. This is supposed to be our holiday, not an exercise in protecting Royal Caribbean customers. Wow! Get the guests to do the jobs of the staff Royal Caribbean must have laid off. An upsetting incident off the boat happend in Alesund. When re-boarding, the port security and Royal Caribbean security were on top of one another. You showed the sea pass to port security and immediately to Royal Caribbean Security. Our daughter thought she had lost her sea pass as it had fallen off her lanyard. Fortunately, it was only twenty feet away and she retrieved it. But being on the autism spectrum it had really put her out of sorts. She and my Wife showed the cards to port security, but as my wife was still comforting our daughter they did not clock that they had to immediately show the sea passes again to the Royal Caribbean lady then screamed at them “I need to see your passes” which put our daughter more off kilter for the rest of the evening and really upset my wife. Wow! Great way to treat the guests. One positive, our 15 year old teen enjoyed the teen club and made some good friends there. I forwarded me experiences to Royal Caribbean. A few weeks later I received a call on my mobile phone from a representative who did a poor job at faking sincerity. He offered a cruise coupon of £50 each for my wife and I (I guess our daughter does not count). I pointed out that £100 off a future cruise is not going to restore confidence in Royal Caribbean. He then offered £75 each, as if that little extra would make the difference saying that as I had not complained on board ship that was all they would offer. I pointed out that I HAD complained on the ship. I also wanted to know what they planned on doing about the dangerous rails. Apparently they refuse to let customers know how they plan to tackle dangerous situations on their boats. At that point of the conversation I lost signal. I received a phone message saying he would call back. He never did. I’ve chased them and await another call.   Read Less

Recently returned from Iceland and Norway Cruise. I had high expectations of Royal Caribbean having travelled with them before. However the downside for me this time was the very tired state of my Jubior Suite Stateroom - furniture badly needing replaced, bathroom and shower facilities requiring attention and the entire cabin requireing some TLC. Many of the staff were reaching the end of their contracts and were only too willing to tell how fed up they were. I fully undersr=tand they must be after eight months long haul. however it does nothing to cheer people up who have been so looking forward to their brteak. Worst of all was some of the entertainment - some acts were sadly very tired looking and certainly past their sell by date. - Really disappointing standard compared to some other cruise ships I have been on. Only three production shows and some of the cast didnt even botehr to mime ti the respective backing tracks making it look a very contrived performance. The sound operator should also look at his input as the volume levels were wayb out - many people were constantly leaving the theatre as they could not bear the excessive volume - I certainly couldn't blame them. On the plus side there was a huge surprise when we had Kerry Ellis, of WesT End fame performing Tell Me On A Sunday - outstanding!!!!! A light at the end of the tunnel.. A wonderful ice show, great group the Zoots and a wonderfully engaging string quartet helped balance the very poor showing of other acts. Travelling alone I tend to take organised trips but oh dear - the organiostaion in the morning of these trips was a joke - they should again look to some other lines to see how effectively this can be carried out. On several trips we were accompanied by personnel from the ship - why? They were rude, arrogant and of no help to the local guides who on the whole were really excellent. Some lovely staff in the dining room but the food choices, presentation and quality of food was very varied. The windjammer was badly laid out and always congested. We visited some lovely places but the places we had a very long time in did not always require this and vice versa. As I mentioned before there were some lovely staff, exciting visits, some highlights but I feel overall for the money that a single traveller has to pay this ship certainly did not come up to the high standards that other ships and lines can offer. I would recommend travellers sailing out of Southampton to look at other options. Read Less

Have today returned from 12 nights around Western Med and am very disappointed. First went on this ship in 2010 and loved it. Now not so sure. Yes it was August but the ship was over run with out of control children. Not too bad during the day but at night time it was a joke. They were everywhere and no one was controlling them; least of all their parents who were nowhere to be seen. They were going around in gangs and doing the things that gangs do: noise, bad language; pressing all the buttons in lifts, leaving food and plates in the lifts, on staircases and everywhere in between. Pool side at night was a war zone with them throwing food and drink all over the place. We found the hygiene standards had dropped seriously. Tables were left uncleared for hours, very few were ever wiped leaving sticky surfaces so you were wary of putting your belongings on them. There was a noticable lack of staff and those who were visible did not seem to have any heart in their job. Food left a lot to be desired. We used the Windjammer and were amazed at the lack of choice. Every day was the same food: sushi, pasta, and curries. If we were lucky there was fish or a meat pie but the vegetables as potatoes left a lot to be desired. Desserts were the same every day as well. Half a cup of jelly, carrot cake and fresh fruit. A different steamed pudding was available with watery or lumpy custard but no-one had thought to cut the sponge into sections so after 5 minutes it resembled a disaster zone. The whole cruise was likened to a booze cruise as a large majority of guests felt it was their duty to get as drunk as possible using their drinks package deals. On the last night security had to be called to a lone middle aged woman who was sitting in the smoking lounge abusing everybody in there. She was absolutely slaughtered and had to be removed back to her cabin. She managed to upset several people with her behaviour and we were later told she had done the same just 2 nights earlier in the Dog and Duck pub. Security handled her and the situation extremely well but maybe they should have stopped selling her drinks sooner. This sort of behaviour is not what we expected on Royal Caribbean and it has certainly put us off going again with them. Entertainment in the Lyric Theatre was very poor. One night they showed a film despite having the on deck big screen and a viewing room (small cinema)   Read Less

My wife and I have only ever cruised with Royal Caribbean over the years and have diamond status, so I guess we can be classed as loyal customers. We have been on the AOS before and had a great time but this one was different. First of all boarding was delayed due to the norovirus being on board. Automatically most people would be concerned and we were no different. However, we understand that these things happen on cruise ships and we were determined that it wouldn't spoil our cruise, although we would have to be very careful throughout. I suppose having this hovering about for the full 14 days does have an impact on you mentally. As always most staff were pleasant but I found most of the deck attendants to be ignorant and unhelpful. Now onto the food. In the MDR the staff serving us were great so no complaints whatsoever there. However the food served was generally lukewarm, which I mentioned but was never resolved. With the virus on board you would think that serving lukewarm food should have been a key issue to sort out. It wasn't. The head waiter was never seen nor did he speak to us until the last night. Wonder if that could be something to do with tips?? In respect of the MDR menu I found it to be very poor with not a great choice. They had two Indian dishes every night but no Chinese or other international cuisines, apart from Italian which you'll see below is an issue on this ship. We went to the Giovanni's restaurant, which has replaced Portofino's. My wife has a garlic intolerance and (as we have done on other ships) asked for the garlic not to be used in her food. We were told this could not happen because the food was pre-prepared off the ship (same answer given in the MDR). So much for producing food freshly made! Not impressed. We never went back. This sounds like we were miserable throughout but the opposite is the case. When we go on holiday we enjoy ourselves and try not to let anything get us down. We had a great time and met some fantastic people and had a superb laugh. The issues I've raised I thought I'd share with you but a holiday is only as good as you want it to be.... and we had a ball!! We are booked on AOS next March sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico on a Caribbean back to back. Needless to say we will be cancelling this cruise and will be looking elsewhere!! In regard to the ports, we have been to most of them and went off ship and generally did our own thing. However, on most days the weather was fantastic so we would go off for an hour and then head back and soak up the sun. Our highlight was Lisbon which we found to be a lovely city. We are going to spend a long weekend there next year as there wasn't enough time (or stamina in the legs) to see everything we wanted to see.   Read Less

In 2013 we sailed out of Rome on the Navigator of the seas. It was our first cruise and it was almost perfect. The ship was spotless the crew were friendly and polite. We learned a lot from this cruise. And one of the things we did learn was to travel from Canada to Europe a few days earlier than the sailing date, and get over the jet lag. The Navigator of the Seas was due to depart from Southampton on October 12th so we spent a couple of days in the U/K getting into the time zone. Two days before we were due to depart I received a phone call telling me that the ship was on its way back to Southampton and that some passengers had been taken sick with the Norovirus. Our boarding would be delayed by 3 hours while they sanitized the ship. They gave us a new boarding time for our deck. I received two more calls over the next two days and also one e-mail telling me about the delay. We arrived at the departure terminal at the time they told us to. Our bags were taken away from us as soon as the taxi stopped. Then we had to join a long line of passengers waiting to check in. The longer we waited the darker the clouds got, and just before we hit the part of the queue where there was a roof it started to rain. Nowhere to go just stand there and take it. Lucky for us it was not raining to hard and after a while they called our deck number and we went into the terminal. Also lucky for us we had sailed with Royal Caribbean before so a lady stuck a gold sticker on my shirt and we joined a shorter line up. I felt sorry for all those that we in the other line up it snaked back and forth for a long way. Our check-in was not too bad the agent scanned our passports and we were on our way within a few minutes. It took her about the same time to check us in as it did the agent at the airport in Toronto. Once on board the ship we went to Deck Six we got there around 5.15pm. But we could not go to the cabin because they were still cleaning. So we all went downstairs to listen to the emergency drill instructions. After this was completed we went back upstairs but we could not go to our cabin as they were still cleaning. So we all went for dinner at the Windjammer. At 7pm we returned to Deck 6 and found that we could now go to our cabin the luggage was outside the door. As far as the cruise was concerned at was a lovely cruise we went to some nice places and saw lots of interesting things. We did one ship tour at Gibraltar but other than that we made our own arrangements. In most cases we went on the red hop on and hop off busses. Unfortunately the Norovirus cast a big shadow over the cruise. In the buffet (Windjammer) you could not serve yourself they had staff standing out in front serving you. It was obvious that they had to use staff from all parts of the ship to do this job. One day there was a man with wellington boots and coveralls serving. He had gloves on but it was obvious that he did not know how to serve people and he spent some time chasing the vegetables around the dish before he caught some and put it onto my plate. Now you cannot blame these members of the staff for not doing a great job. First of all they do not want to be there, second they are not trained as waiters and in the case of my guy with the wellington boots I am sure he does a great job somewhere down in the depths of the ship doing what he is trained to do. As the cruise went on it was obvious that they were being overworked and were not enjoying life at all. But they were doing their best and I thank them for that. My really big beef about Royal Caribbean is the disgusting price that they charge for use of Wi-Fi. Their prices are outrageous. We spent some money on Wi-Fi but then when we went onshore we just went to MacDonald’s or Burger King or to a restaurant and sent out e-mails free. In this day and age where most people went to keep in touch with family at home WI-FI should be free. After we arrived back in Southampton we choose to walk off with our suitcases and we had no problems doing this and no delay. We find it easier to do it this way. In general the choice of ports was good and the ship arrived and departed each one on time. But this ship is nowhere near as well run as the Navigator of the Seas was and it was starting to show its age even after having an alleged refit this year. For 2015 we had picked out two cruises both the same length and this cruise helped us make up our mind which one to take. In 2015 we will not be on Royal Caribbean we are going to try another cruise line.   Read Less
