First time on the Golden Princess cruising to New Zealand from Melbourne. As we took an overnight flight from Perth we arrived very early spending a number of hours at Tullamarine to burn some time before sky bus and tram to station Pier. many were disappointed that there is nowhere to wait under cover at all, not like other ports so be prepared if it's hot or raining. We were let into the port facilities at about 11.30 AM and soon after boarded. Ship interiors were as good as we have seen as far as cabin, restaurants and public areas go. Exterior is a bit worn, many of the spa pools were out of action for the entire cruise. Had issues with our cabin toilet as well taking up to 15 minutes to flush some mornings but it was repaired about 10 days into the cruise. Staff were fantastic as usual, great cabin steward, waiters etc. As we are platinum members we were treated to special afternoon nibblies in Skywalkers nightclub every day. Must say there seems to be a little more economizing every time we cruise. No more happy hour sessions at all. We had a cyclone travel through New Zealand on the way so Fiordland was cancelled. We received $25 each port tax credited to our accounts as recompense. This was after we received $150 each pre cruise as Auckland was also cancelled. Entertainment was the same old performers we have seen up to three times in a row on Princess so if you are a regular be prepared for a repeat. Unfortunately despite the new hand washing and sanitizing before meals and being very careful my wife picked up a cough which has descended into a chest then kidney infection since returning home. Overall we enjoyed ourselves dancing the night away most nights. We shall return. Read Less

We did the 13 night ex Melbourne to NZ but only finished up with 5 ports as Auckland was cancelled a month prior to sailing (officially due to lack of full engine power). A small $150/person on board credit as compensation was given but obviously most passengers were not pleased and rumours ran amok about the 'real' issue. The other itinerary adjustment was due to bad weather with the Fiordland cruising abandoned. Again gps tracking showed the change in direction 24 hours before an announcement and this upset many people. I am no sea captain but as much as the Milford Sound entrance is narrow and shallow this is not the case with Doubtful and Dusty Sounds so maybe the captain is not that confident or mindful of the dollar savings by not venturing that way. Also on the way back from NZ the ship cruised so leisurely that one person joked a person had jumped overboard for a swim but after 1 hour had to wait for the ship to catch up. Now about the ship. Yes it is going into dry dock late March/early April after this Australian/NZ season so with the above engine issues it is not looking good for passengers travelling over next few weeks. Definitely a senior age age passenger list with a huge percentage from Melbourne and Victoria (ex Melbourne and return the single biggest drawcard, but true anywhere in the world) and a very very small sprinkling of international people. Staff are always polite and helpful. Dining room service and food is very good. Speciality dining rooms are exceptional value at $29/person with superb food and service. Many people look at the extra cost rather than view it as an experience. The Horizon Court buffet is acceptable but disappointed for lunch with many tired food choices and tired looking food towards the end of the cruise. This is well below average especially as NZ has excellent food but they seem to get nearly all of the food from Australia. Entertainment is OK without being anything special ie some good some not. Activities for the additional sea days were very poor with no additional effort or thinking put in hence people attended a couple main choices and everything else was bare. A couple of the activities staff are below standard. A big major NEGATIVE - smoking is allowed in two sections of the ship - one at the rear in a non thoroughfare next to a small pool (fine & OK) and one on promenade deck, the only around the ship circuit, where thousands of laps are done by walkers, many having some nasty comments to and from the smokers. Simply not good enough in 2018 - other lines changed policy a decade ago and avoid this! Ship management toe the HO line of we will note the comments - but nothing is done. If you are adverse to cigarette smoke (there are many more than the occasional smoker on promenade) then check out the details before deciding which ship to sail with. Almost forgot, embarkation - there was no check that your cabin number matched with the suggested boarding time, so many people turned up early well before the schedule obviously with their excitement or ensuring they got lunch on board. Sum- satisfactory cruise with lost opportunities for it to have been even better. Yes we will travel with Princess again (this was cruise 4 with them) but do more research beforehand. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it went everywhere we've always wanted to visit in New Zealand. It was also a celebration of a milestone birthday for me, so we chose a 2-day bus shore excursion from Milford Sound to Dunedin, staying overnight on land and rejoining the ship in Dunedin. We were also looking forward to visiting family in Auckland & seeing the magical Fiordland. Well, we got the feeling that this cruise was doomed from the start. Firstly, a month before our sail date we were told that Auckland was cancelled due to a faulty engine. Not a good omen we thought. We tried to reschedule to a later trip but were refused. We got a measly $150 onboard credit each as compensation. We sadly told our Kiwi family that the much-anticipated Auckland visit was off. We boarded the ship thinking that we'd try to enjoy the cruise nevertheless. Imagine our desolation when we were told that Fiordland had also been cancelled due to bad weather! We couldn't help but wonder if the engine problem also had something to do with the cancellation. For us the blow was doubly devastating as it meant the end of our special birthday overland excursion also. Trying to make the best of it we tried to book another excursion in Dunedin, but couldn't as all were booked out. My birthday was spent in drizzling Dunedin with nothing much to do. Oh well, c'est la vie! Our stateroom was okay, but it had no bright light for bedtime reading. After all, that's about the only activity available to us during the interminable day after day at sea due to the cancellation of Fiordland. The carpet had seen better days, and the balcony sliding door was almost impossible to open as it would stick. Having sailed on this ship before, we were disappointed with the quality & presentation of the food & the unimaginative menu. It was essentially pub fare. The standard had deteriorated greatly since our previous trip 15 months ago. The wait staff were the best part of the cruise, although there seemed to be some tensions between staff in the Traditional Dining Room. We changed to Anytime Dining in another restaurant where staff were more pleasant & provided excellent service. The onboard entertainment was equally sub-standard compared to our previous cruise. After a couple of shows we decided to stay in our rooms & try to read or watch television. The TV offerings were dismal, with few choices & little range of films on offer. We were quite literally bored out of our minds most of the time spent on board. The shore excursions we did do were excellent, and the shore staff knowledgeable and interesting. However, overall we felt hugely disappointed, and were left with a feeling that the crew didn't really care about their passengers and didn't bother to explain the cancellations and port tender delays satisfactorily. We weren't alone in feeling cheated and disillusioned as many of our fellow passengers expressed similar sentiments. In our opinion Princess Cruises are over-priced, falsely advertised and thoroughly disappointing. Spend your cruise dollars elsewhere! Read Less

I don’t know why I picked this one should have picked another one, ship looked run down toilets kept blocking food in the horizon court was poor quality more aimed towards the Asian market, prior dining room times and seating arrangement changed to anytime dining,I get the impression princess didn’t care about the passengers on this cruise bathroom in the public areas paper towel runs out and they put a box of tissues in to use to. Dry your hands entertainment average in the lounges and bars atmosphere was flat, Promenade was always beening closed, have a lot more to say but read the survey I filled in selling poor quality power adaptors that didn’t work no speciality restaurant like Curtis stones SHARE , or sterling steak house , so that just lets me know princess have a lack of communication unless it’s plus for them, I now refer to the golden princess as the goldenPig Read Less

To see New Zealand again on a third attempt to see Milford Sound and Auckland - plus catch up with friends in Wellington. One out of three happened! Tender service long and slow - long waits to disembark at ports and to get back on again, standing in rain and sun with no protection. Overcharging for drinks - limited day time activities, when at sea for more days than expected. Acceptable to not be able to enter Milford Sound with weather condition for safety reasons, but hey provide more things to do, lots of miserable and moaning faces. Auckland was also missed dearly for a lot of people unaware they could not catch up with family, due to technical difficulties (hey, can they not sort that out with 6 weeks prior to departure?) Most staff were lovely - a few very inexperienced and it reflected more as the cruise passed. Not as much entertainment as on previous cruises and as usual the slowest internet, that made even more people grumpier! A lot of money to pay to feel we couldn't wait to get home :( Read Less

Princess Cruises have done much to have the risk of cross-infection / cross contamination under control in all areas of the cruise ship. My wife and I were very impressed with that. We both have some knowledge of pathogenic bacterial control. In addition the air quality around the entire ship is fresh, nice and comfortable. Also, the Golden Princess has neat and modern interior decor, really happy with it. Very attractive buffet area (Horizon) with smart, modern lighting - we didn't need to go elsewhere. The service staff are really good, and they're happy people! The stateroom stewardess was joy to have. We didn't see the ship's officers much as they didn't mingle or talk with us. It was nice to hear the captain's voice now and again, however. I would go on the Golden Princess again for sure, and I would recommend this ship to anyone without hesitation. Well done Princess Cruises! Are you guys the best kept secret? Read Less

Three girlfriends and myself decided to treat ourselves to a birthday cruise as we were all reaching a milestone birthday this year. Picked this cruise more for timing than destination but was not disappointed. Very happy with all aspects of the cruise except one entertainer and meals got a bit repetitive but plenty of food thru out the day. Lovely staff, very thorough on cleanliness and overall very enjoyable. Getting off at the ports went smoothly and well organised. Staff and crew were very pleasant and helpful. Walking around the ship was not crowded and the line ups for the buffet or dining rooms was also very well run. Plenty of entertainment was happening and we walked around each night listening to what was been presented in each area. Embarkment was well run and very quick with staggered arrival times as was disembarkment. Hint as we had two cabins with two girls in each we made sure we put are cases out together and made collection easy to find at collection point. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of the time of year and number of nights and because it departed from Melbourne and returned to Melbourne (round trip). Entertainment excellent, cabin great, ships cleanliness and lovely food. Travelled with a disabled family member. Cabin catered for the disable passenger. From the larger cabin door, spacious room and bathroom facilities. Only negative thought on disabled cabin was that it was at the very end of the ship, so going to the Princess Theatre meant walking from one end of the ship to the other. A disabled cabin in the centre of the ship near a lift foyer would have been better. Understandably the passage ways are narrow so not having to walk past cleaning trollys would have been easier. Otherwise entertainment was wonderful. Mocktails were fantastic. Variety of food great. Berninis and Donetello was great, food, waiters and ambience was excellent. Overall wonderful experience. Wanted to see Kangaroo Island.was very dissapointed with the tour we did. Needed to be able to get food, as we did an afternoon tour, at lunch time, can't take food off the ship, and nothing open to get any on land. Port Lincoln was great, very friendly and helpful. We did a hop on hop off bus, to see different things, guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. There was a train station where we docked in Adelaide so caught the train into the city, to look around. The entertainment on the ship was great. Being on the ship for Australia Day, the activities and music on the pool deck was good fun Meals in Buffett and restaurants was top class Majority of crew were friendly and helpful. There was plenty of lifts on board, that very rarely crowded, normally only a few in them. Over all a lovely cruise Read Less

We had a fantastic time aboard the Golden Princess in Jan 2018, the weather in NZ was so nice and the seas very kind, it was an older crowd on board which suited us, our room was very good, clean and comfortable, food was excellent, especially in the dining rooms, the hamburgers are as good as you will get anywhere and the cakes at the international cafe are delicious, as was the entertainment all around the ship, the nightly shows in the princess theatre were a highlight. I found the staff to be very helpful, especially our room steward, disembarking in melbourne took only 10 minutes with our luggage waiting for us the only downer were the tender boats at Gisborne, it took forever to get back on board, but overall a big thumbs up, we will be looking at doing another princess cruise in the not too distant future.
