Wonderful, Intimate, Small Ship Experience
"Bottom line: take this ship and the others in the Star Clipper line for the intimate size, casual dress (there is a Pirate night - you are forewarned to bring costume items), chance to meet new and very interesting older adults with rich life experiences, chatting with crew you will see day after day and watching what they do to actually sail the ship, ease of accessing all parts of the ship and never waiting for anything except an occasional tender, and dropping anchor in small out of the way bays. Those highly maneuverable tenders allowed the Royal Clipper to drop anchor in small bays far from the major cruise ship ports in the Lesser Antilles - such as Terre-de-Haut in les Saintes - a tiny island you can walk across in 15 minutes to a beautiful beach - located just south of Guadeloupe...."Read More

Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Royal Clipper

We’ve done a couple of “big ship” cruises and we decided they weren’t for us; too many people basically. We decided to give the Royal Clipper a try. For us, this turned out to be a good experience. If you want a casino, cabaret shows, dressing for dinner and so on then the Clippers probably won’t be your thing. If you prefer a more informal experience then yes! It’s probably not best suited ...

Though I am not sure I could withstand more - my wife and sister in law and local friends were all set on going and my knee was shot. And the ship had stairs (ladders in nuatical terms) but no elevators. And I use a cane. Not good. Hoofed it to a colleague who shot me up with enough cortisone and marcaine to make me think I was 21 again and away we went. I knew I would pay for it but the other ...

We have done a couple of cruises on the big ships but wanted something different and we sure did get it with this trip. The Royal Clipper is a sailing ship and we made our way through the Eastern Caribbean region under sail for the entire week. That is not something which you get to do every day. We loved every minute of it. The food - The food was amazing. Breakfast and lunch were buffet ...

Poorly planned (no planning at all) shore excursions

So the “sail always” were nice especially because this is a full rigged clipper ship, rigging took quite awhile and the amount of canvass was impressive. After a few departures this got kind of old and as far as I could determine the ship mostly relied on the engines for propulsion as is the case with other “sailing ships”, it’s mostly for the visual effects. The traditional wood and fittings ...

This was our first time on Star Clippers – a choice we made due to the interesting small port itinerary not typical of larger cruise ships and the fact that it was a working tall ship with a small complement of passengers. The Royal Clipper is hand’s down a fun and dramatic ship to sail on. The fact that they raise the staysails with each port departure and play Vangelis’ Conquest of Paradise ...

Tired Old Ship in need of some TLC

We sailed on Royal Clipper in 2014 and loved it. We couldn't wait to go back, so much so, we booked two cruises back-to-back. This time was a VERY DIFFERENT experience. - Blistering paint and rust on ceiling, banged up woodwork, bad stains on carpet, chipped up paint on walls - Malfunctioning toilet (twice). We didn't have a working toilet for 16 hours. We had to use the toilet in ...

This is MY REVIEW Flight were scheduled by Star Clippers travel. My 12:30AM departure flight was cancelled when I arrived at the airport 2 hours early so I was without sleep for over 24 hours! Why didn't they send me day before and do overnight and fly next day to Barbados?? There was no way to speak to the person who does the booking. When I finally arrived around 10PM at night (the ...

Choose this cruise because I really like small ships and I was very interested in the sailing etc. As others have described the “raising of the sails” is very dramatic and fun to watch for the first 2 or 3 times. Crew is obviously focused on the care and maintenance of the sails etc. but as far as I could tell except for the day when we sailed with a sister ship the sails were just ...

This was my first time on a Star Clippers cruise. I had been on three big cruise lines but never on a tall ship. The experience far exceeded my expectations and I have already booked my next one. It was absolutely incredible. In fact, when the sails went up for the “sail away” experience on the first night – I would say it was one of the most amazing moments in years of travel. Every sail away was ...
