We were so fortunate to vacation on the Viking Einar. From the moment we were picked up at the airport in Basel to our departure in Amsterdam we were treated as royalty. Every member of the staff was excellent. It was the norm for staff members to greet us with a smile and a hello. The cruise director was excellent. She was always prepared and saw to it that all the passengers were having a good time and all their needs were met. The Einar is a new Viking ship and the design is beautiful, with tasteful decor throughout the ship. We stayed in a French Balcony room. Though the room was small, there was enough storage space and the warm bathroom floor was a nice touch. We enjoyed our meals in both the main dining room and at the Acquivit Terrace. The dining staff was very attentive and there was a variety of choices on the menu. The wine and beer served during meal time was a nice touch. It was very interesting to dine with different people throughout the cruise. The evening entertainment in the lounge was always pleasant. I enjoyed when we had local musicians perform as the evening's entertainment. The ship's pianist was excellent and he read what the passengers enjoyed. A highlight of our vacation was the wonderful tours we went on. Each of our tour guides were excellent and we learned so much. We especially enjoyed a food tasting tour in Strasburg, France. It was amazing to see all the castles along the Rhine, as we cruised. The cruise director's commentary as we sailed, made the experience more meaningful. Each tour was well planned and the quiet-vox which each passenger used, was most helpful. We enjoyed visiting the monastery, Kloster Eberbach, where we toured, had a wine tasting and enjoyed dinner. Touring the windmills in the Netherlands was also a touring high point. Each tour we went on was excellent and gave us much information. We have sailed Viking River cruises a number of times and I look forward to sailing with them again. I highly recommend this itinerary. Read Less

First river cruise- Easy on and off ship. We were let out right on the edge (or sometimes the middle) of a historic town. Amsterdam was incredible and the hotel was centrally located. Our cruise director ( Anna) was wonderful. She helped me the minute I arrived on the ship. Also I enjoyed the trivia contest (btw, my team won), the question were designed well. Thank you for not cancelling bike rides, even though I was the only one who signed up in advance. Each ride was a different, Kinderdyke was easy and scenic, the next one went along the river, and the third one (on ebikes) up to a farm was incredible. I had a bike problem on the final ascent, but the two guides brought an extra battery and saved the day. Service in the dining rooms was very good. The servers were flexible about orders. I would have liked a little more variation in the dinner menu. Breakfast was always delicious, the omelette guy knew what he was doing. Better cookies and between meal pastries. I don't think there were chocolate chip cookies ever. There should be more exercise equiptment, there was a walking track but that was all. OMT- My wife and I had a wonderful time. From my first call regarding this cruise with Masha Givelber ( who was fantastic through the whole process ) this cruise was everything I had hoped for and more. It was my very first cruise and I can’t see taking any other cruise line. The website video showing the ships public areas was spot on. The staff were beyond AMAZING and you want for nothing. Check in was extremely easy ( of course I was the last to check in since I was getting in multiple tours as possible in Amsterdam so I had no wait ) We ate every meal except one on board and the food was delicious ! Our servers Michael and Gil took wonderful care of us the entire week and Igor the Maitre D was the best ! We definitely left the ship with added pounds. I personally think you would be hard pressed to find someone better at their job than Victoria our program director. My God she always seemed to be working and with a smile on her face. Ellie and Milan ( I’m sorry I can’t remember the other young lady name ) at guest services always went above and beyond. The excursion were great with interesting and knowledgeable guides, ( I liked that we had the same coach driver along the way ) game nights where a blast, along with the German themed dinner night. We enjoyed the on ship demonstrations ( a speciality drink, French pizza and the glass blowing ) There is not one negative thing I can say about my Vikings river cruise. It was fantastic from the moment I stepped on to the ship until I disembarked. We where even able to come back to the ship after we disembarked later in the day for lunch and told if we wanted we could stay on the ship for the day ( we had stayed an extra night in Basel ) which I found to be amazing. Thanks to our captain Thomas for a very enjoyable river cruise and Kosta our hotel manager for having what I would say the best staff who are excellent at their jobs. Read Less

We have never cruised before because of getting seasick. When our travel agent told us about Viking we said sure. We found everything about Viking to be superb. From the moment we arrived at the Einar in Basel till the time we departed in Amsterdam we had nothing less than an exceptional time. It started with the curbside drop-off of our luggage and ended with our luggage being taken to the departure area when we left the ship. The crew were very accommodating and friendly. The food was excellent and service impeccable. The entire crew, including deck hands, were always smiling and friendly. We always felt comfortable and never concerned with regards to safety. The reception desk handled our every need very efficiently and without undo concern. The ship overall was kept immaculate and our cabin was tended to multiple times a day. The tours we took for the most part were good. We are looking forward to the next cruise with Viking. Read Less

My younger sister researched and suggested my husband and I join in. Glad we did as our brother, sister-in-law and other sister and brother-in-law did too. Plus 3 other couples who are friends. This was the first time we all travelled together. Amazing that all of our schedules meshed to go on the adventure. The itinerary allowed everyone to venture and do what they wanted. It was fun to gather in the evening and compare the day's experiences. I do not like large cruise ships. The Einar Longship was just the right size and the right amount of guests and staff. Excellent staff who were always watching out for the safety and comfort of guests. Very accommodating and helpful suggestions of the cities and sites visited. Everyone was well trained and professional. Dining & service are excellent. Enjoyed the regional choices and everyday selection. The kitchen prepared a special menu for my sister-in-law who is from the Philippines. It was enjoyable to have a choice to dine in the dining room or upstairs on the deck. There were plenty of options for planned excursions, self-exploring or to stay on board. Greatly enjoyed the walking tours. The guides were excellent. Also enjoyed the lecture on the history, economy & changes to modern Germany. Could have spent more time in Heidelberg. A special touch was allowing guests to board early and enjoy lunch. During disembarkation, guests who had late flights or tours could stay on board and enjoy the public areas. My husband and I enjoyed the Viking Longship Einar. We will consider another Viking Longship river cruise in the future. Basel was enjoyable and good embarkation city. We also spent 2 days in Lucerne prior to Basel which was fun. In hindsight would have liked the pre-cruise tour of Lake Como but a reason to return to explore. Read Less

It was our 50th anniversary and wanted to do something special. From the moment I called Viking's travel agent, Esteban, things went smoothly. He patiently answered all my questions and set up the trip. The flights went well and we were picked up and taken to the ship, where we were warmly welcomed. There was a delicious lunch waiting for us and we nearly instantly started getting acquainted with both staff and passengers. Our cabin was very clean and comfortable. Our dining options were delicious and well presented and served. Evening activities often consisted of an excellent piano player as well as local entertainment and an very entertaining bar tender!. The cruise director, Victoria, was wonderful. She was a wealth of knowledge and so helpful answering questions. The food was great and the staff was very attentive. The included as well as our two extra excursions were wonderful...very well organized but also with some flexibility. We really liked the small boat experience and the relaxed pace. We had the opportunity to make many friends on the trip and are looking forward to our next Viking adventure soon! Read Less

This was the first cruise for us . Right from the start the Viking crew were there to attend to us. They handled our luggage from curbside and made sure it was delivered to our cabin. We found our cabin immaculate and well appointed. The meals for the next eight days were of excellent quality. There was not one we didn’t enjoy. The staff never kept us waiting for any of our needs. They were always smiling and upbeat. Their attentiveness to every detail made us feel very special. Being we were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary it made the time aboard Einar very special. It was really amazing that your entire crew from the Captain to the deck hands were continuously friendly and smiling and wanting to assist. Wow what a group We are ready to do it again. River cruising with Viking is definitely the way to go. Read Less

My wife and I traveled with another couple. We chose the cruise because of the itinerary and because we were very happy with a previous Viking Cruise. The itinerary was excellent, though not as good as the Danube Waltz because it had more cities. Before we set sail in Basel, Viking provided a tour of the city that we didn't expect. That was a nice addition. We liked the included tours and the 2 optional tours we took. There weren't as much optional tours available for this tour. Embarkation went very smoothly. Our room was available early and lunch was provided for us. The ship was nice -- both the rooms and public areas. Of course, the rooms are small but that's to be expected. They were comfortable and kept clean. We enjoyed the balconies. The meals were uniformly excellent and the service was perfect. We had the same waiter at each meal. He knew our names and what we wanted and he fulfilled all our needs. We loved the fact that there were meals on the left side of the menu that were always available. So if we didn't like the special meals on the right, we had something to fall back on. The front desk personnel were friendly and helpful. Disembarkation was efficient. We hope to take another Viking cruise in the future. Read Less

We had heard from friends who went on this particular cruise. We searched other cruise lines but felt for a first cruise this was perfect for us. Viking handled everything from the time we got off the plane until we were dropped at the airport. We were treated like valued guests. Everything from cool cloths at the end of an excursion to the bartender knowing us by drink! We especially enjoyed our cruise director and her unplanned evening shore excursion. The food each day was a delight and we enjoyed all of the evenings entertainments. Watching other cruise line groups while out on excursions, we realized we had a great organization at work for us. We loved everything about the trip and never felt exhausted after excursions even in the record heat. We would have liked an extra excursion in Amsterdam during our extended stay. It was the best trip we have ever taken and will definitely return to Viking. Read Less

I was a last minute replacement as my friends husband was unable to travel for health reasons. While I had always wanted to go on a Viking Cruise, it had just never materialize. After my first experience, I have now convinced my parents and husband to go on a Viking River Cruise (booked and schedule on the Danube.) First impressions are important and Viking did not disappoint. From the beauty of the ship as it sat docked to the warm welcome of the staff, to the elegance of the ship itself, first impressions were off the chart. Honestly, there was not a portion of the experience of this Viking River Cruise that was not exceptional. Other than the extreme heat (nothing they could control.) I would almost have to say this was one of the most perfect travel experiences ever. The included excursions target the places an individual would want to visit. Having your own group guide, who provided amazing informative and entertaining commentary, made the experience complete. No fussing with tour books to try and find information. I would term the ship and cabin and simplistic elegance as its finest. You didn't feel overwhelmed by over the top decorations, furnishing, or feeling. It was very comfortable. As far as food is concerned, I felt as though I was dining at a 5 star restaurant the entire cruise. Each meal provided a wide variety of options, all of which were incredible. For dinner, I typically selected the local option so that I could have a taste of the region. Staff interactions with guest are critical to the overall experience of a trip. I will have to say that every staff member we spoke with or had any type of interaction with was incredible. This ranged from housekeeping to our wait/serving staff to the staff that was cleaning the side of the ship. They were all willing to answer our questions or assist as needed. Trip #2 has already been booked and will take place the Spring of 2020. We are planning another trip in 2021. I have a feeling that this may become an annual event at our house. Read Less

Absolutely loved this cruise. We chose this cruise as we had heard many good things. The only thing we were not too happy with was the Blackforest excursion. We felt it was very rushed. Other than that it did not disappoint. The Taste of Alsace excursion was fantastic as was the Top of Cologne. We chose the French balcony cabin this time due to the fact we spend so little time in the cabin so it was not worth upgrading. We spent time in the lounge visiting with others. We have met many interesting folks from all sorts of places. So wonderful. We loved the fact that we can sit with different people everyday in the dinning room or we can sit with folks that we have become aquatinted. The wait staff are wonderful. What a surprise when after the very first day they knew my name and my like and dislikes. Awesome folks, Viking has become a very favorite action with us. We look forward to many adventures to come. We loved our first Viking experience. The ship was well appointed with comfortable beds, attentive staff, and a great selection of local tours. We traveled with another couple but joined a bigger table for dinner each evening. The food was delicious with a local selection each night. The wine selection was good and the bartender in the bar remembered what you liked to drink after the first night. You do not have to dress up at night for dinner. We enjoyed the evening talks about what we would see the next day. There were several tours you could choose for the day with all levels of ability to navigate cobblestone streets available. AKA the "leisurely tour" if needed with a slower pace. We attended local dinners in 2 ports that had great food and entertainment. Our cruise director was everywhere from the ship to many of the tours. Some days we walked several miles with interesting local guides. The views from the ship of the Rhine were spectacular. We chose to stay a few days afterward to explore Amsterdam. Next time I would spend a couple of days in the port before we left to get over jet lag. With airline delays, we almost missed one of our flights and had lost luggage issues. The Einar staff were on it and had the luggage in the room after dinner that first night. Read Less
