We had a day in Heidelberg that we were out from 10:00 to 3:30. We came in from the very cold day to a lunch of hot soup and finger sandwiches. I arrived about 3:35 and there were many still behind me. They were only serving one type of soup and when I got there they told me with no apology whatsoever that they were out of soup. I have been on at least 14 cruises on 4 different lines and I’ve never heard sorry, we’re out. The wait and bar service was mediocre. The cocktails were very inconsistent, I don’t think the bartenders were trained. the drink list was old fashioned and limited. One server grabbed my Cosmo before I was finished and put a napkin in it. When I said I was still drinking it he removed the napkin and handed it back. I wish I could say I was kidding. Shipboard entertainment was very weak. A piano player, a local choir, decorating the Christmas tree. Really, we decorate Your tree for you? The optional excursion that we did was disappointing. We paid $79 for an average meal at a German Restaurant. There was partying and an “oompah band” promised but the band did not even have a tuba. I don’t consider “Margaritaville” traditional German music. What was good: Not packing and unpacking, the stops. The included tours were actually good and they offered a more relaxed pace option for those who wanted it and the guides were good. Overall I would choose Tauck for a better experience. Read Less

Cruise on the Rhine was average at best. Nothing bad but nothing outstanding either. Very disappointed that Viking does not believe in having bikes on board for guests to use. We have used these on other cruise lines and it was one of the highlights of our trips. No fitness facilities on board either. Also Viking seemed to dock at a facilities in a lot of the ports that required taking a shuttle into town which was a major disappointment. One of the nice things about a river cruise is being able to walk right off the ship and into town. This was possible in Koblenz and Cologne but for the majority of ports we were outside of town. On the plus side the staff and service were excellent. Food was very good. Wine was excellent. All public areas very clean. Coffee and cookie area was a nice bonus. Morning spent viewing castles while cruising the river was superb. Cruise director was entertaining. Free access to Wifi/Internet was appreciated compared to an ocean cruise where it is an extra cost. Excursions were well organized. Read Less

First time European river cruising for us. We loved it. Felt like an upscale floating hotel. Less than 200 people on board so you don’t fight the crowd of an ocean cruise. It takes a minute to reach the top deck for lounging, or dining room for all meals, or Lounge area for music or bar. The staff is very friendly and professional. Our Program Director Alex was phenomenal and always accessible and organized for all off shore excursions. He is top notch in his field and Viiking is fortunate to have him. Same for the hotel manger Christine. Our room stewards kept the room immaculate and it was nice to have a clean and spacious balcony suite room after a busy day touring. Our trip started out on the Gefjon but a barge hit a lock and we did the usual procedure for this. Packed our bags and left them in our room for the staff to transport to the Sigyn on the other side of the damaged lock. All passengers were loaded onto a bus after an excursion and taken to our new ship. Bags were placed in same exact cabin number as old ship. It went flawlessly. Only downfall was the Gefjon staff had to stay on that ship, with luckily the exception of Alex. The new staff and crew were excellent also. This is just another reason to choose Viking. They have so many identical ships, switching ships is a remedy many other ship lines cannot perform. You cannot control lock breakdowns or water level so it’s benefical for a river cruise line to have this procedure. We cruised from Amsterdam to Budapest and saw beautiful sites throughout. Happy sailing. Read Less

This was our third Viking river cruise. The ship, staff and food met Viking's high standards. The itinerary was uninspiring and I would not recommend it. That's not Viking's fault - they can hardly recreate such awe inspiring countries as Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Croatia. They all seemed very much the same. One low light excursion was the Viking provided excursion when the contract tour guide the Balkan war by saying, "Remember, we (Serbs) were the good guys". He brushed aside the facts about Serb committed genocide. That "rewrite of history" was disappointing. The best excursion was when we had tea and "cookies" with a Croatian family. it was a residence that was also a B&B. An authentic visit. The ship's staff were amazing. They were attentive and has a great sense of humor. The daily briefings were always interesting and informative. I am now adding more words to meet the standard for submission. Read Less

Our 2nd Viking river cruise did not disappoint. The ship, on its second voyage, was shiny clean. we did have a few minor 'break in' issues. The safe wasn't working and TV seemed to have a mind of it's own. Both resolved after a day or so. Dining was excellent. Food selection and quality was top notch. As with our Rhine cruise, we found the wine selection to be good quality, and menu prices for all drinks to be fair and reasonable. We did not buy the beverage package, and wonder why anyone would. Our excursion guides were all entertaining and educational. Hearing some of their personal stories about life behind the now fallen iron curtain really helps ones appreciation of life as a US citizen. The only service issue we took exception to were the wine tasting activity. Really minor - the staff member pouring the wine really didn't know what a wine tasting is. we also had a service issue regarding our cabin as noted later in this review. With the exception of our cabin experience, this was a 5 star experience. Why 2 stars? Our cabin experience was worse than awful. Let me be more specific. The cabin was great, except for noise. I'd give it a minus 5 stars because of the noise, if possible. I can tell you the most wonderful experience soon becomes a nightmare when you can't sleep for days on end. We experienced and complained about how incredibly noisy the cabin was at night, on 3 different occasions. Impossible to sleep noisy. Sadly, and maybe in a demonstration of indifference or worse, after our cruise we learned that none of our noise complaints were logged. So when they told us engineers would and had checked our cabin, I'm left wondering if they really did. It's as if they knew there was a problem but didn't want any record of it. Apparently all they gave us was lip service. All night, every night we heard LOUD banging, scraping, swooshing and vacuuming sounds. Nearly ceaseless. My wife was able to get some sleep with ear plugs. Because of my tinnitus, earplugs are not a good option for me. Since we didn't spend a lot of time in the cabin during the day, it's hard for me to say if this was going on all the time, or just during the night. Twice I opened the cabin door in the middle of the night expecting to see ship staff running vacuums, carpet cleaners, a parade of noisy carts, or some other noisy equipment only to find a very quiet and empty corridor. MUCH quieter than our cabin- maybe I should have curled up in the corridor to sleep! Our neighbors told us their cabins were very quiet. Our last cruise was also very quiet, in cabin 112. So why was this one SO dang NOISY and why did ship staff not log the complaint? And why did ship staff lie to us when telling us engineers would check. I should note here that it made no difference if sailing or docked. Nights were TERRIBLE!!!! Viking did offer us vouchers against a future cruise, but didn't offer to try to explain anything, or offer any explanation for the lack of logging or answers. I don't see us cruising with them again as Viking integrity appears to be a problem at some or maybe multiple levels. A real shame. Read Less
