We chose to cruise the Hood and Columbia River’s for the scenic beauty. We selected American cruise lines because they had the best selection of sure excursions for our photographic needs. We were disappointed. The American Song is a nearly new river cruise ship will still undergoing Break-in. The water in our cabin smelled spoiled. We did not taste. We requested and will refused bottled water both in our cabin and for the meals for the first few days until the number of complaints grew sufficient that they brought water on board. So many people sent back bad food but they fired the chef after the second day. Meals later in the week were tasty but uninspired. The truly disappointing part was that rather than moving the ship at night and allowing all the beautiful excursions they promised in the brochure, they move the ship each day and gave us only a short time on sure for the abbreviated excursion. This is just unacceptable. We, and many of the other couples, wrote and called American Cruise headquarters to complain during the week. They reported back to us that they were told problems and be corrected when in fact nothing is changed. If you’re looking for Captiva Drive down the Columbia and hood rivers, this is for you. Looking for a variety of short excursions each day with varying degrees of physical difficulties as promised in the brochure, keep looking. Read Less

It was American cuisine, unpretentious, and better than most cruise lines. I think the food was their strongest selling point. We had a lecturer that spoke several times about the Lewis and Clark expedition, and he was quite good. They also had a guitarist-singer who portrayed a cowboy one night and a sailor another. He was also quite enjoyable. Aside from that entertainment was lacking. The lounges were nice and attractive. The personnel were all American and very nice. Unfortunately, they lacked training in the service industry. You may find yourself without the proper eating utensils, and the waiter will never notice, or forget to bring them. I was told that I could not have a certain flavor of ice cream for lunch because it was frozen solid. (?) The age of the passengers looked to be mostly over 70, and many had difficulty walking.
