The ship was clean and the Indonesian (only) staff was very friendly and gave their best.
The cabins were O.K. and the ship, though old, was very clean.
However the negative aspects were overwhelming.

Food:
1) fine. Could have been spiced some more ; understand it must be reasonably standardized.
Had good “special“ days” : Asian Barbecue Day, Indonesian lunch, etc.
2) deserts not particularly good. often dry and tasteless. only ice cream good. improvement here definitely needed
3) As a collector voyage expect menus not to repeat; no such luck ...

We took a 14 day Singapore to Singapore on the Volendam in March. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. Other than the shuttle bus to town on Langkawi Island, we didn't take any ship's shore excursions. However, in Phuket, Yangon and Kuala Lumpur we took excursions arranged by ourselves online before the cruise.

We are active cruisers and have enjoyed many trips on HAL! This was not the HAL we knew and loved.
First, the cutbacks are very obvious: from the food to the tissues, fewer staff, lecturers and quality entertainers. But, more dramatic was the huge number of passengers who refused to wear appropriate dress for the evening/venue and the staff's refusal to do anything about it.
