The embarkation part of this trip felt like a cattle call. there were five or more buses trying to board at the same time. Crew members were barking orders and expecting instant obedience. On the flip side, it was the smoothest disembarkation I have ever seen. Kudos to them for this.
We only had three dinners on board the ship. the Pinnacle was good and the service was good. The Italian ...
We (2 adults, a teen and a pre-teen) loved this ship and the cruise. There was always something to do for each one of us. Well-stocked library, plenty of reading spaces, games, activities. The food and service was great. The ports and shore excursions were amazing. The train to White Summit from Skagway was the highlight of our shore activities. We had an ocean view stateroom on Dolphin deck and we ...
I don't understand the negative reviews. This was a very nice ship in excellent shape. We sailed on Celebrity Reflection in its first year. Reflection was nice, but I'd give edge to Volendam. Public areas have nicer decor and much more functional space per passenger. E.g.,library was well-stocked with lots of windows, MDR much nicer decor with lots of windows, several lounge areas with ...
After reading recent reviews of the Volendam, we were a little apprehensive but since we were only going to be on it for 3 days prior to a 9 day Holland America land tour, we just hoped for the best. Let me first say this was our 58th cruise - mostly on larger ships and hadn't sailed on Holland America for several years but we were most pleasantly surprised. We sailed from Vancouver and ...
This smaller ship had the qualities of great food with a good variety of choices. The service was also very good. We had a suite and the amenities were great. The free pressing service and laundry was very handy and become a spoiled necessity. The lido food bar for was not opened 24 hours, but there was a 24 hour room service if you needed to help keep your weight up.
The entertainment was good ...
After reading all of the negative reviews about the food, the ship, the service (though this usually gets high marks) and the activities, I was a little concerned about what we might find once we boarded. It's true that the ship looks dated and that they were regularly repairing various areas of the ship, but I've seen repairs and painting happening on Disney cruises as well. This ship is old. No ...
We've just had a great experience on a generally very professional ship. Yes there were a few jiggles but let's be realistic ....the same happens in hotels and at home .... so lets all get real! Embarkation at Canada Place was very efficient - ok there were some queues but with 1600 people getting on board there would be and they weren't very big! The ship was spacious enough that it never ...
Prior to our cruise we had hired a motorhome for 8 weeks and toured a little of USA but spent most of our time in Canada. For me the cruise was to celebrate my 60th birthday and have a week of relaxation and enjoy being waited on.
After reading a few reviews on CC I was pleasantly surprised that the ship was in better condition than I expected.
We did not partake in excursions but enjoyed ...
The cruise to Alaska on the Holland America ship Volendam was a mixed experience. The places visited, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan were all great in their different and dramatic ways. We went on a number of excursions, whale watching, a train journey to the Yukon and sailing the misty wilderness waters, which were all very well organised with informative, enthusiastic, guides to ...
The land tour (8 days with HAL) was awesome and exceeded our expectations, Anchorage/Denali/Fairbanks/Dawson City/ whitehorse/ Skagway but the sea part to Vancouver was not fun.
I would not cruise with HAL on their ships again.
