Went on this 'new' ship for the new year into 2019. The most boring cruise I'd ever been on. There was no laughs and no entertainment. Reality bands on a big screen every night. Same thing every evening. We had excursions booked for most early mornings so had to be in bed by 11pm and up early. So our routine was that after dinner each night we would head to the bars for a few drinks. But is was sooo boring. Nothing happening. Maybe a game of over priced bingo and then a reality band on the big screen. The same one that was playing the night before, and the night before that. Oh my god it was so boring on that ship. Nothing, just nothing went on. The Theater was dismal, I know them young people work very hard and they were pretty good but the shows were just rubbish. I couldn't work out what one or two of the shows was even about, seemed like a bit of a mishmash. Days at sea were unbearable. Just lay out on a sunbed bored to death and then in the afternoon someone who was unable to sing a note in tune would start playing acoustic guitar, they would come on and sing slow, slow, slow ballads.. It would make me feel like jumping overboard. The cruise was drinks all inclusive, so getting somebody to try and serve you at the bar was like waiting for a bus. There were no staff and on sea days if you were lucky enough to flag a waiter and order a drink, they would be 30 minutes coming back with it. On two occasions they didn't return at all and when I complained I was told it was probably because they had finished their shift or gone on their break. Kill me now, YES it really was that boring. We booked a cabin at the back of the ship. The cabin was terrible. The lampshade was hanging off, the walls were filthy, the mattresses had 'stains' on them, the shelves rattled about and the toilet was half way up the wall that I had to climb up onto it with my legs dangling in mid air whist I tried to do my business. I don't need to explain the difficulties in cleansing oneself! The shower was a disgrace. Was filthy dirty scum on the walls and mold all around the seals. Food was alright but nothing to get excited about. But better that some cruises I've been on. Read Less

My family and I have cruised with Thompsons many times in the past and we have always had a fantastic experience. I thought the change of name to Marella was quite simply that, a name change, but that is obviously not the case. The entertainment on board is the worst I have ever experienced on any cruise, its Butlin’s at sea, cheap and extremely irritating. The team responsible for your entertainment can easily be found in the smoking areas of the bars, drinking, smoking and entertaining each other. The food is reasonable, however the service is painfully slow and you can expect to be spending a great deal of time waiting between courses for your meals to be served. The specialist restaurants that incur a supplement are still painfully slow from a service perspective, the food is nothing special and certainly not worth the additional cost. The icing on the cake came during our second week when we rounded a corner on deck 7 to find human excrement on the deck, a crew member was placing a chair over the turd to prevent anyone walking in it and he smile and said “someone had relaxed too much on their holiday”. I'm no snob, I like a drink and a good laugh as much as anyone, howsever the calibre of guest on this cruise left much to be desired. . The excursions are over-priced, but they always are on cruise ships and in fairness we enjoyed them all. On days where we had no excursions booked we couldn’t face staying on-board with the drunks staggering around so we left the ship and got Taxi’s to the nearest beach. My advise to anyone considering booking with Marella is simple, DON'T. Maybe we were just unlucky, but I will never cruise with Marella again. Read Less

We decided to go on the Explorer's first voyage under the TUI flag. It was my 50th birthday, so my husband and grandchild came along with me. Embarking, we had no issues and since we had a "premier" suite we were allowed to skip waiting to board. Have to say there wasn't any queue anyway. We received a very warm welcome from the staff and crew and we were happy with our large balcony, complete with hammock, 2 chairs, table and 2 sunloungers. Our room was what we expected. Plenty of closet space, TV, tea/coffee facilities, safe, useless hairdryer (always, no matter what cruise line you use!) mini bar etc. We were perplexed about where to store our empty cases, so we stuck them out on the balcony. The socket for the kettle kept blowing. It worked once and then would blow again. Similarly, the loo kept breaking. There were problems the first day: 2 of our cards refused to go on the system, charged 3 times (refunded) for 1 ice cream, but again, we were expecting a few teething troubles. We were at sea the second day and the queues were unreal. Took over an hour to order a coffee in the nook, we left only to wait for 20 mins in a further queue for 2 cokes. Only one poor struggling barman with about 100 thirsty customers! This was soon resolved by the evening time. The food wasn't great. Basic "school dinners" in the market place. You had to bring your drinks in with you. Only beer, wine, water or milk available and no waiters. Quite a long wait for dinner in latitude 53. Also, I asked if I could do without the sauce on the steak and was told no. Only one potato at dinner and a small spoonful of veg. I had 3 green beans... We dined there 3 times, same every time. Again drinks are an issue if you don't drink wine. Kid's club was fantastic to the extent that my grandson huffed if it wasn't open. The staff are amazing, and my husband and I enjoyed the peace very much! Champneys spa and gym were fabulous. Cost the same for make-up as a blow dry. Thought £50 was a little steep for a blow dry but my hair looked great as did my make-up. The photographers were brilliant and we came home with some very nice shots. Entertainment was good. There was a celebrity on board. Unfortunately I didn't know who they were, but I rarely watch television. Says more about me than TUI! The excursions seemed to be well planned. We really enjoyed ours. Our guides were good and enthusiastic. Going home we were told in advance about departure times, where to disembark and get our cases/transfers. It went very smoothly for us. All in all, we enjoyed ourselves and have great faith the hiccups will be addressed with time and experience. Read Less

This was the first sailing and it did show on the first day , everything was overwhelmed , 55 mins for a coffee at the coffee port and the Market place was little better than a really poor transport cafe .The quality of breakfast was worse tha n a premier inn so we resorted to cabin service breakfast ...BUT the coffee of the whole ship is undrinkable! Except in coffee port , Marella need to understand that most people expect decent coffee as can be bought on any high street in the UK. For this reason alone it's worth paying the premium all Inc at £50 pp per week. This also gets you decent wine Merlot and Sauvignon , premium cocktails and all drinks at the Gin and whisky bar (10 premium gins and 10 whisky Inc fever tree mixers) The premium restaurants are also a bit mixed , The dining club was superb , we are there twice , surf and turf was ok , not sure it's worth £28.95 pp extra and Kora La does decent curries but the fondant was the worst ive ever tasted. The drinks are plentiful and branded as standard with a great deal, as mentioned , on premium upgrades . The pool is a bit hemmed in and quite loud , lots of people just drank all day - The Mediterranean and deck at the back were much quieter and more for us. The cabin a Junior Suite was very good but we had a few problems with the electrics as well , but overall loved the cabin . He cabi stewards along with service across the ship was very good and we chose to tip a couple of people for excellent service Inc out cabin stewards. Watch the excursions , a walking tour of Naples is over £30 each , and you coukd walk round or organise your own much cheaper .similarly a taxi to Pisa woukd have worked out cheaper than the £150 the 4 of us paid for a guided visit . In villefranche take the train to nice (10mins €4 return) and monaco (20 mins €8 return) , then explore Villefranche in the last couple of hours before the last tender at 5pm, otherwise it is overrun with people way on Overall we enjoyed the cruise , it's woukd be 4 star if the basic food offering was up to scratch , but it wasnt Read Less

This was our 1st cruise with a view to a Carrabean cruise next year and were glad we chose Marella to sail with especially the new ship to the fleet the Explorer, our 1st impressions weren't great our Cabin was not ready when we arrived, the former occupants had left a mess in the room, mucky cups, dirty beds and dirty bathroom. We informed the cabin staff who informed us there had been 900 reps on the launch party and they had left a mess. We were told to grab a drink and it would be ready in 30 mins, we also had problems with the safe and toilet not flushing, but nothing that was not fixed and spoilt our Holiday, after that it was plain sailing literally, we had a Balcony cabin (8199). It was amazing waking up in a different location every day, the Food was delicious in every restaurant and the beer was cold in every bar, we didn't opt for the AI drinks upgrade as I drink Corona, bud and Peroni at home so why would you, the wine was good and all spirits we liked were branded Bailey's, Gin and Amarreto so why would you, we tried the Surf and Turf and it was worth the money it was High end food, the only thing we had a problem with was the trip Naples + Pizza, it was described as a moderate walk around Naples with lunch. In fact it was an 8.5km speed March in 26° temperature. We lost 6 people in 1st hour as the couldn't keep up. We complained and was refunded 25% each. The cost was £74 Not cheap for a workout and a Pizza lunch. Would o go back he'll yes, would I use Marella again Yes. It was the maiden voyage and a lot of the staff were new and learning and we expected teething problems. We were lucky to have amazing crew and staff on board and guests like Lisa Riley and the Overtones. Read Less

We chose this as it was our first time cruising. Overall we were not dissapointed. Fantastic ship, first class service, & out of this world meals. The cabins were spacious & clean. We booked a large balcony cabin & on it was a hammock , a sun lounger, & table & 2 chairs. Dining We tried the buffet restaurant but found this to be a little over crowded & the food was not hot. We dined in latitude53 all week for breakfast ,lunch ,& evening meal. The food was fantastic with 1st class waiter service who couldn't do enough for you. Entertaining The entertainment was also first class, with high standard acts, we saw the Overtones which was brilliant & brought back a lot of memories. Excursions We managed to book on 3 tours which was very informative but tiring as the bus journey was 3hrs round trip which made it a long day but enjoyable. Pool area There was always a sunbed available no matter what time of day. The waiters around the pool work very hard & always pleasant. The pool is small but amicable, there is also 3 jaccusis. The snack bar around the pool is brilliant with freshly cooked burgers, hotdogs, chips ,salads , & a selection of sandwiches. Now for the teething problems as it was the maiden voyage. Firstly service at the bars is chaotic, with people queue jumping & arguments erupting. The bar staff try very hard but when it is full it was hard for them. We had a word with the bar manager advising him that a queuing system should be put in place, but he said this could not be done. ( Don't know why). You may say why not use the waiters but on busy nights the waiting time to get a drink could sometimes be 30mins. Secondly as the week went on, toilets in the public areas were starting to block & overflow which caused terrible smells in the surrounding areas. At the end of the week there was not many toilets in the public areas that was working, so hopefully this was resolved for people embarking after us. But all in all this was a really enjoyable cruise & would not hesitate to book again Read Less

This was our 6th cruise and our second with TUI and our first visit to the Eastern Med, The whole of the journey from Belfast to Palma went smoothly, The return flight home was delayed by 2.5 hrs due to a bird strike on the aircraft the day before, The information given to us at Palma was "You know as much as we do" which wasn't very helpfull. This was advertised as Marella Explorer first sailing? The ship was launched in May 1996?? I would rank it as a average cruise ship with nothing exceptional or nothing really bad apart from the things below. Bars -- I found that in all the bars I visited that the staff were very obliging but were very inexperienced The waiter service was slow and that orders were frequently wrong, The bar & waiting staff were also not familiar with the computer terminals that they were using that led to ques forming, on one occasion I noted that there were five staff behind the bar and only one serving and on another I asked for my usual drink and was told that it was not on the all inclusive package and that I would have to upgrade to get it, after I was told this I went to reception to check this out and was told that the bar staff were mistaken. Restaurants Market place- Only ate here a few times and found that the food was genrally good but was let down by food being slowly replaced when required and that some hot food was only luke warm. On one day the only plates that were available for salad and cold meats were just out of the dishwasher and were hot. Latitude 53- The food at latitude 53 was good where we mostly ate Most of the staff here seemed experienced and most orders were served correctly but one lunch time I made the mistake of ordering a Vegeterian Burger after a 20 min wait the waiter apoligised for the delay and said the chef was making it from scratch when it arrived 15 min later I was disappointed to find that it was just fried cooked lentals with a sice of tomato in a burger bun, Definitely not Restaurant quality. Broadway Show lounge The entertainment in the Broadway Show lounge was good and varied we were able to get seats on all the nights we went there except one where we had to stand for half of a poular show, On this night there was a portion of the seating cordoned with a sign saying reserved seating, the next day I questioned this at reception and was told that "It is not possible to reserve seating" I then asked why there was reserved seating the previous night? The receptionist took my cabin number and told me that she would list it as a complaint and get back to me. 10 hrs later I had herd nothing and went back and saw another person and was told that there was no complaint noted and that she would try and find out for me about the reserved seating, After consulting with someone in the back office she came back and said that the seats were probibly reserved for crew members as it was captains night and that if I wanted to see a show that I should arrive earlier to which I replied "Is it TUI policy to put the crews comfort above there passangers" To which there was no reply So I can only assume that this is the case. At 07:00 one morning the captain came over the PA to tell us that we had docked and that we were free to go ashore I asked at destination service (There was a que at reception) why there was a need to make the announcement so early and was told that it was for the benifit of the passengers going on excursions to which I pointed out most were not and what about them, I did not receive a reply. I was considering going on a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords next year but it will not be on the Marella Explorer, Read Less

First sailing Marcella Explorer 19th may 2018 We have looked forward to this weeks cruise with our family for many months, we saved hard and the time came. We chose Thomson (Tui) (Marella) because we had never been disappointed before. We have cruised many times with Thomson before. Starting with the Destiny and on the spirit only last year. We recommended to our family that Thomson was the best for food, entertainment and friendly staff. And of course the all inclusive package was a huge bonus. First impressions of the ship was good. We made our way to the Mediterranean tapas bar for a well earned drink. We were offered an upgrade to the premium package and declined as we were happy with what was on the basic AI drinks menu. - [ ] We went to find our cabin. (Inside cabins 4171 4175 4179). They weren’t ready. We stated it wasn’t a problem. We would go for lunch and come back later. Which we did, he obviously hadn’t done anything else after we had come down the first time. The hangers were just thrown on top of the wardrobe. There was no soap/ shower gel in the dispenser in the shower. There were 2 pairs of safety goggles in one of the bedside drawers. Which had coffee stains on the top. Room 4175 had numerous receipts and other litter in the drawers. Room 2179 had a pair of dirty underpants in one of their drawers. Why was this not checked? - [ ] The cabin was not hoovered all week. With a new carpet the fluff coming off of it was of large quantity. The coffee stain was still there midweek so I ended up cleaning it myself. - [ ] The following day was a sea day. We were woken up by the loudest tannoy in the room. It was so loud it was uncomfortable. We held a pillow up to the speaker. It went on for a very long time. We asked at reception if it could be turned down but he didn’t understand what we were saying to help. - [ ] That evening we went to latitude 53 for dinner. We have always dined in the main restaurant on all of our previous cruises. The food choices were very poor. It appears a couple of courses had disappeared ie salad course and soup course. We don’t eat meat so the different course choices was one of the reasons why we picked Thomson. Our waiter offered us bread, when we asked for more from the same waiter. He didn’t know what bread was. - [ ] At 6am the following morning we wondered what was happening. Our room shook so much for about 20mins. There was things falling off the shelves. Our shampoo fell into the shower, the whole cabin was shaking. After speaking to our family in the other rooms they said exactly the same. Were on holiday, we didn’t want to be shaken about at 6 am every morning apart from sea day and the tender day. We were offered another cabin but it was over the corridor. It wouldn’t have made any difference. These cabins should not be used for guests. - [ ] As the weather wasn’t good we spent some time in the Squid and Anchor pub. There was very limited service staff. We went to the bar the whole afternoon. When I did manage to get a girls attention for a drink. I was told abruptly “I’ll be with you in a minute”, never saw her again. - [ ] Nights 3,4 and 5 we ate in the speciality restaurants. Umi sushi. Kora la and Surf and Turf. All very good and we enjoyed the food very much.. this was the kind of food and service we are used to on previous cruises. This cruise this service came at a high cost to us. - [ ] The entertainment lacked such a high standard too. I’ve always thought Thomson as being on par with west end shows, however I wasn’t impressed. Although the comedian was good and nice to see Lisa Riley of course. - [ ] The last evening we ate in the main dining room again, this time the food was cold. And actually left the room still hungry. - [ ] The bottom line is. The standards have dropped. The food was cold and unimpressive in the main restaurant. The service has lost its personal touch. So many eastern european staff who are very abrupt and really do not know enough English to do the job. The Philippine staff are always friendly and helpful. The eastern europeans really couldn’t give a damn when they didn’t understand and sometimes were quite rude. - [ ] A plus side was the bike tours. Gem and Michelle were very good and we thoroughly enjoyed the 2 rides we did with them. I was more stressed on holiday than if I had stayed at home Read Less

This cruise was suggested to us by our local Tui store so we went ahead keeping an open mind. We didn't realise this was the inaugural sailing of the Explorer, and were pleasantly surprised at the generous promotional gifts waiting for us in our cabin. Embarkation was easy and the systems employed throughout the cruise proved efficient. We had mixed feeling about the increased balcony space at the expense of stateroom floor-space. The hammock and lounger were useful.... but so would have been the space in the room: you can't have everything so it was what it was. Our room attendants were superb - always friendly and helpful and a credit to the ship. It would be remiss not to mention the first morning's confusion, but suffice to say, from then on, everything on the ship appeared to run smoothly. We chose to eat in the dining room and one has to say the food was superb. My only criticism was that although wine and beer were available with the meal, spirts were not. On the subject of wine, the quality of the wine on tap in the Market Place was awful. Not only could I not drink either red or white, I saw countless glasses of unfinished wine on tables left by others doubtless of the same opinion. The theatre and entertainment by contrast, were fabulous (no other word for it). The dancers were so professional and "together", they could have been on the West End stage. The musicians were equally as good (as well as those throughout the ship). The theatre was as good as I have ever been in: the seats were well placed. with lit-up tables and efficient waiter service. The captain was ever present and approachable: we managed a bridge tour where we enjoyed his hospitality and shared some of his experiences. A big thank you the crew who made or cruise as enjoyable as it was Read Less

We have just returned from the most fabulous holiday ever with tui Marella explorer. We arrived in palma and embarked on the new to tui ship. Immaculately presented rooms newly refurbished it certainly was more impressive than we had anticipated. We had lots of little gifts pens, notebooks toiletries chocolates etc celebrating its first voyage with tui. Over the years we have been on many Thomson tui holidays so had an ideal what to expect, average food, decent accommodation cheesy entertainment etc. Well that may have been the old Thomson/ tui experience, but after this week we can honestly say they have thrown away the old manual and reinvented themselves with this one and blown away the old tired format of the holiday experience and set the bar so high I don't think other holiday cruises will reach. Food 10 places to eat, five with a supplement and five as part of the all inclusive, it's a Thompson/tui holiday and I had the old expectation of the all in food would be poor and the supplement food would be good, how wrong I was! The all inclusive food in all five places to eat was fabulous, tasty fresh well presented with attentive staff and waiters, clean facilities and very professional chefs, tui have thrown everything into this one and thrown the old way of doing things, dining was a treat wether it was a snack or and sit down table waitered service eating was a pleasure with the all inclusive deal. We did try a meal with the supplemented eateries, the Kora La it was simply fantastic a real treat, but whatever you taste or need they cater for everyone. We in our party had and gluten free and a veggie and they were taken care of no problem. Staff Couldn't do enough for you, your every need was catered for and nothing was too much trouble, faultless in every way. Excursions We went to Pompeii and Herculaneum fabulous day out very informative guide who's knowledge and passion was beyond compare, it made for a fabulous day out Entertainment well, we have been on countless Thomson/Tui holidays and even at five star level, the entertainment was lack lustre, amateurish and cheesy at its best, OH BOY, are you in for a treat, simply put the onboard shows in the broadway lounge were outstanding, the singing, the dancing, the acting, the presentation, the musicality and directorship were second to none, we were a party of six, and we were all blown away by the outstanding performances of all of the shows. Tui have thrown away the old "how to" entertainment book and replaced it with something that's worthy of any west end stage. It sounds OTT but I promise if they keep that level of passion they gave in performing for us you will not be disappointed. The last place you want to have poor entertainment is sailing down the med with nowhere to go! The entertainment in all of the other bars and lounges were fantastic too, there is something for everyone and your musical taste I'm sure, will be catered for. Bad bits It was over in a week, first time ever we didn't want to come home! Overall We had avoided cruises for many years thinking it would be "Butlins in a Boat" how wrong were we? We are looking at next years cruises already!!! Awesome effort by all involve in making everyone's holiday on board extra special and captain peter and staff for making our journey a safe and pleasant one Read Less

We chose this ship because it was being re-launched with a new look. In hindsight we should not have gone on the 1st week as there were teething problems, but nothing worth writing home about. First reviewer has pretty much covered everything although I would disagree with the standard of food in the all-inclusive restaurants. We had a bad experience in the Vista (Italian) which we obviously spoke to the waitress about at the time. Wrong order arriving, poor lasagna which resembled something out of frozen microwave box and came in the same looking container dish ...... not good. Diners to my right refused to eat the carbonara, TWICE. I really REALLY got the impression they were trying to steer diners towards the restaurants with cover charge. We encountered this on the Marella Dream but maximum cost was £20 per head. I think having 5 out of 10 eateries with additional cover charge is too much. Especially as the remaining all-inclusive 5 are really only 3, as 2 are combined within other areas. Vista being part of Latitude and the Tapas and Pizza places both being in the Mediterranean area. Don't get me wrong, everyone was trying really hard to make sure guests had a great time, especially Captain Peter and we did have a lovely cruise! PS - I wish I'd known in advance about the free fitness classes at Champneys, I'd have taken my gym gear. Although I did book a lovely treatment. Read Less

This was only the second cruise my husband and I have been on and were so looking forward to it. Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse including our dealings with the provider TUI. We had booked a balcony cabin as we have in the past but although the room was pleasant, it certainly wasn't the standard we expected. There was a dummy dial (did not work) on the wall for the air-conditioning but it did not control anything so all day and all night we had cold air blowing directly on to our bed for the whole week. We went on the second sailing for this cruise ship and it was quite obvious, that things were not what they should be. Many of the staff, although always polite and helpful, ran around like headless chickens and it was obvious that management had not completed training of the staff. The food was OK but not as good as we had had on a previous cruise ship with a different company. I think that probably the worse problem was with the toilets. The public toilets were constantly having to be closed as the sewerage was overflowing and floating which smelt dreadful at times. Staff tried their best to keep on top of the problem but it is obvious that this old refurbished ship was not fit for purpose and was not able to take the volume of passengers. I can understand why things such as norovirus can spread quickly on a ship. There were many other issues which are too many to mention but I think what I am most annoyed about is that on the day after our return to the UK, I emailed TUI to outline all my concerns and problems. They did not respond so after 28 days I had no option but to contact ABTA who are no handling the complaint. A simple apology from TUI with acknowledgment of the problems the ship was having would have been sufficient but it has now angered me that they didn't even have the common courtesy to contact me following my email. I now have to wait a further 28 days for ABTA to try and resolve the matter but if nothing is forthcoming, I shall pursue the matter further TUI ..... (from a very annoyed TUI customer) Read Less

Chose this cruise as it coincided with a special anniversary. It also visited ports that we were interested in. Plenty of restaurants and activities day and night if you chose to do that. We were only at sea for one day so every other day was taken up with shore excursions. Although TUI reps were very informative on these excursions we found that they were very over priced. Friends went off on their own and paid a fraction of the price we did by using taxi or bus. We also found the speciality restaurants quite expensive considering we were only paying a supplement of an all inclusive cruise. However the dining club experience was to die for. One of the best meal experiences we have ever had. About six small courses with wine to compliment each course. Finishing with a brandy and port costing over £90.00. Surf and Turf restaurant was excellent too with a charge of £47.00 including a glass of wine each. Read Less

we chose this cruise as it was visiting naples and we wished to see herculaneum. our first impressions were that the room was slightly bigger than an equivalent one on discovery one (which we sailed on last year). the ship appears fine with the usual layout, dining was excellent as you'd expect on any cruise ship, in this case generally catering for british tastes (although there are more adventurous restaurants on board at a surcharge). service was excellent, at dinner, at the 'squid & anchor' bar, and during the daytime whilst sunbathing too. now onto the entertainment, some of the daytime pool entertainment was good, with decent music playing, and fun games and competitions. the evening entertainment in the squid & anchor was good to very good. onto the broadway show lounge, the shows in general were good (obviously some better than others) but sadly as yet not up to discovery one standards. there is NO BAR in the show lounge, and thus no waiter service, the staff hand out glasses of prosecco and bottles of san miguel fresca (which for me is watery and nowhere near the standard san miguel, don't take my word for it look on the 'ratebeer' site) anyway i'm not a youth or in my 20's i want to drink, what i want to drink, and on an evening it's quality not volume, they somehow need to get a bar in there and send someone from management onto discovery one to see how it done. now onto the ship's REAL ACHILLES HEEL, THE TOILETS, for 4 days out of 7 the toilet in our room didn't work, didn't flush, that of course means you have to go out and find one that does. if you're in the shower you have to get dressed, if you're in bed, yes you have to get dressed. the 'quickest' for me was two decks below on the first occasion, yet the following day those were locked (as they were out of commission too) and i had to go down yet a further deck. as the week wore on you could from time to time hear the usual conversation amongst other passengers about 'their' room toilet being blocked, the public ones being locked, and even one lady who said it looked as though a public one outside the squid & anchor 'was about to overflow'. from my experience on the merella explorer i'll not be going on a 'new' ship until all the gremlins are ironed out, broadway show room wise it's certainly NOT to discovery one standard, toilet wise it's short of a 1970's corfu hotel. TUI were recommended by a cruise mad friend as a great introduction to this type of holiday. We chose this cruise and ship as it covered an awful lot of places of interest. On the day of arrival we were stunned at seeing the shop and is sheer size. Now of course we are first timers with experience limited to cross channel ferries. And even more stunning to us was this is a sort of mid sized ship! Embarkation was smooth and we were greeted by extremely friendly staff from the terminal through to walking on board. The ship is beautiful and despite initial 'newbie' confusion everything is well sign posted and there are lots of maps to help you find your way about. We boarded about 15:00 and after unpacking in the lovely, clean cabin we used the next two hours or so to explore every part of the shop and get our bearings. Be warned that for some areas such as Latitude and Vista restaurants might mean taking a detour up or down a deck as deck 5 seems to end suddenly despite signs pointing you beyond a point you're told you can't pass! Anyway that bit of obvious advice aside the cabin was lovely. We booked a balcony cabin and we're on deck 8 starboard. It was clean, well equipped and very well laid out. It includes an electronic valuable safe much the same as hotels provide. The shower is brilliant, like standing in front of a fire hose! Our cabin was cleaned around three times a day and the staff are very friendly and only to happy to help with any requirements. That last sentence applies to ALL the TUI staff who are always helpful, smiling and friendly. That goes a long way to making the whole experience very personable and personal. Dining facilities are excellent from the self service marketplace with a huge choice of hot and cold, sweet and savoury food and drink, to the superb Fine Dining Club (£35pp supplement). The included Latitude and Vista restaurants are also very good quality. Entertainment on board was mixed. The Broadway Show Lounge shows were superb, almost West End quality and there are plenty of other things to entertain you on board albeit some rather 'hi de hi' level but......you choose what suits you. We loved the Lounge with the Pink piano and a rather more easy going atmosphere. The pub on board, The Squid and Anchor, was pretty close to a pub atmosphere and has an aft outside area for smokers /vapers with excellent waiter service. As for excursions, they were a mixed bag. None were bad but some are limited time at destination with long transfer times (nearly 2 hours from Palamos to Barcelona leaving us just 4 hours to discover as an example). Next time as experienced city breakers we will take some Lonely Planet guides and research the transfer from Port to destination more carefully. But then the whole cruise was for us to learn this stuff. Every day is a school day on your first cruise. In summary,so impressed were we by the whole experience that we booked next year's one on board and for a great price.until next time Read Less

We selected this cruise as it was our 40th wedding anniversary and we wanted to do something special. We always fancied trying a cruise but were apprehensive about it being a bad experience. Since we normally holiday with Thomsons (Tui) we felt we would be in good hands and this was a good decision. Overall I can understand how people choose to go on cruise holidays as the overall experience was fantastic. We stayed on in Mallorca for another 3 nights which was a lovely end to our holiday. I could nit-pick like the next one, but nothing is ever perfect and you adapt. Flew out to Mallorca, travelled by coach to the ship and the embarkation process was so well organised it was over in a couple a minutes. Went onboard and headed for our cabin. Within 15 minutes we had our luggage delivered to our cabin. The accommodation was spacious and as I said previously we had a balcony. The bathroom/shower was a little bit underwhelming. The shower looked a bit grubby and small. However the facilities are done to maximise the living space in the cabin and the shower was powerful and always gave me hot water. We slept well in our bed as the mattress was soft and very comfortable. With the gentle rocking movement of the ship as she sailed through the night gave us an excellent sleep. The bars were excellent, with the exception of the Indigo Lounge, which would be better named the Moon Bar as it lacked any atmosphere. The entertainment was very good. Some entertainers was better than others, but on the hole it was a very good standard. The staff were exceptional. They were so friendly and tried to enhance our holiday experience and nothing was a problem to them. The staff were a credit to the ships company and the greatest asset of the ship. As always there is an exception to this and we managed to find one bar waitress called Mansot who needs to go back to finishing school as she was aggressive and abrupt when we dealt with her. But that was easily sorted as there were plenty of staff to attend to us. Our first port was Palermo in Sicily. When we disembarked it was like running the gauntlet with the locals trying to sell their trips. A simple thing like get a taxi into the centre turned into a pressure sale to take a full tour for exuberant prices. We ended up walking into the centre, a walk of about 15 minutes. This set us up for what to expect at the remaining ports, but none were as bad as Palermo. We booked an excursion which was described as Discover the Canals of Livorno. It cost 76 pounds for two and was sold by the ship. It was very disappointing. We were never more than 10 minute drive away from the ship. We were dropped of at a smelly fish market and told we had an hour to explore, but warned that pick pockets operate in this area. My head was on a swivel the whole time When we returned to the ship I was annoyed to learn that passengers had walked off the ship and bought the same excursion for 12 Euros. The excursions I felt were expensive and were all much of a likeness. There was nothing that was exciting like snorkeling, scuba diving or zip wire adventures. The port of Villefranche was beautiful. We wanted to get the train into Monaco, but it was Bastille day which meant the trains were running on a limited service. However we decided to stay in Villefranche and it was an excellent day. So pretty and the quaint cobbled back streets were lovely. The ship was not alongside and we were taken ashore on the tenders. That was an experience. The food onboard was as I would have expected. A very high standard and even the market place which is the buffet style restaurant was very good. I certainly always found that there was plenty to choose from and I was never hungry. And I never had a dicky stomach either. The All Inclusive drinks package was very good and it was unlimited quantities of named branded spirits and beers. I was very happy with my lot. On the first night we went to the live show which was called Rockology. The singers and dancers were very talented and sang well. However I never got the theme of the the show. It was random songs being sung. Good show but lacked production to give it some meaning. We never went back but there was entertainment in every bar and lounge which suited our needs. Our last day was in Barcelona. We had a great day around the pool and the entertainment team provided a great pool party atmosphere. Overall it was a great holiday and experience which we will do again, without a doubt. Read Less

First time cruisers, so didn’t know what to expect. Smooth embarkation. All ports reached on time. Excursions very well organised. Loved the restaurants and bars. Waiters very attentive. Lovely selection of drinks. If you wanted to sun bathe there were plenty of sun beds. Cabin had lots of storage, shower lovely. Beds comfortable. Lovely nightclub, didn’t get to bed till 2 as dancing away. Shows very good - drinks laid on for this too. Captain and team very professional. There was a dress to impress night and it was lovely to see people dressed up. We have been really bitten by the cruise bug and are already thinking about the next one. Only negatives are that it is a refurbished boat and some of the windows shabby. A little disorganised when leaving ship to go to our hotel for the week. But we had an amazing time. Can’t wait to do it again. Read Less

The worst holiday experience ever. If you think all inclusive means just that, forget it. Read my review on trip advisor. We have never seen so many disgruntled people in one place nor such blatant price gouging. The food, service, staff, swimming pool, awful. Excursions were a massive rip off. Nothing more than expensive trips in a coach with no water or lunch provided at up to £98 per person; on one we were taken to a fruit and veg market in Cannes on the Rivera!!! The swimming pool was so cold as to be unusable even by the children. Food was dreadful unless you paid a £50 upgrade per couple each time to visit the restricted restaurants that served average food. The staff appeared resentful and clearly did not want to be there. There were a couple of exceptions and we were informed that all the staff were agency and had only been on board 2/3 weeks when we boarded, it showed. Several times the waiting staff could not read the menu. It truly was an awful experience that is never to be repeated. We were thankful we only had to spend a week on the ship DON'T book, you have been warned. Read Less

Booked this cruise very last minute and because it had just had a refurb. Well not much of a refurb apart from the Indigo area which was more like an aircraft hangar with about the same atmosphere! Ship overall was dated but clean and tidy with a lot of problems with public toilets, constantly blocked throughout the cruise. Cabin good standard and well serviced, hammock a nice touch. Dining was abit of a lottery really, MDR poor choice, small portions, designed to get you to use the speciality restuarants which were very expensive IMO. There were no prices for these anywhere that I could see so enquired at reception and was told curtly that prices were on the TV screens about the ship. I checked and they were not, back to reception who reluctantly told me the prices. I can see why they dont advertise them just hoping people will book and find out at the end of the meal. This is Thomsons not Cunard how they can charge £25pp for a curry £29pp for a steak and £35pp for French place is beyond me, 50% more than P and O. Reluctantly we went to the Steak rest last night and it was OK, not great and not worth the extra. Restaurant staff were varied, Philipino staff friendly and competent, Eastern Europeans surly with selective deafness. Theatre Enteertainment ok in parts, Rockololoy and Soul Shows good others not so, visiting act dreadful. Other acts around ship were like poor pub performers do same material every night. Excursions not used as too expensive, made our own way as usual. All inclusive drinks were of poor quality with hardly any cocktails available, draft beer consisted of Fosters, John Smiths and something they called Strongbow but wasnt. Again all emphasis was to get you to upgrade. Savinggrace of this cruise was the staff almost all were extemely friendly and helpful, the best we have ever had and we have done 25 cruises with 10 cruise lines, Must mention Marlon and Emile who looked after us in the Med bar Def would not use Explorer again and doubtful use Tui again, there is better value out there. We chose this cruise for a short break to the Mediterranean. Good flight to Palma as part of the deal, easy transfer to the ship and fast processing to get us on board. Our room was ready when we arrived at mid-day, clean but lacking any character, no pictures, flowers etc. Great cabin service, very friendly and helpful throughout the cruise. The ship is advertised as “new” but when you read the paperwork in detail you soon find it has been in service since 1996 and has had various names. As seems to be normal now on cruise ships, doggy toilets often blocking but a first for us was the Captain putting out a message to stop putting foreign objects down the loo ....... Plenty of places to eat, all clean and well presented. We chose the formal dining but were disappointed with the lack of variety as only one or two items changed each day. Portion size was small but in fairness when we asked for more we got it, unfortunately that was usually after we had finished the meal. Waiters were friendly but service was slow and they were clearly over worked as many mistakes were made with the orders which was quite frustrating. Entertainment was very good and a pleasure to watch. The entertainment team worked incredibly had and put on a number of great shows. The visiting Comedian was great and very funny, his show also very entertaining. One grizzle, the age old sun lounger problem. So many loungers with towels left all day while genuine sun worshipers were left to hunt for a bed. There was a 45 minute rule for unattended beds but it was never used. All in all, good cruise, friendly staff but room for improvement. Read Less

After a great cruise on Tui Discovery, decided to try Explorer. With it being refitted and rebranded, plus we also were thinking of a Caribbean cruise for early next year. We have cruised with many different cruise lines, including Thomsons early vessels, all round the world. Embarkation was smooth and quickly done. The staff were very helpful and we were soon in our cabin, with cabin stewards greeting us. Our luggage was delivered within 30mins. The cabin( 8103) was well outfitted and clean, the shower area was disappointing with a stained sink, corroding mirror plus an unpleasant smell, which we reported, it faded gradually and did not affect the cabin Spent millions upgrading the ship, needed another few pounds spending on the shower area to get it to the same standard as the rest of the ship. The Market Place food was good quality as was the food in Latitude 53. Apart from the second night when the serving and kitchen staff seemed overwhelmed with an influx of a party of 250 people, the service improved tremendously. The Vista restaurant was very busy and it took 3 attempts to eat there. ( It needs to be larger) The entertainment we saw good and professionally done. The excursion to Carcassonne was disappointing, as we did not have enough free time to explore and it was not a cheap trip. The ports of call were interesting, with the exception of Porto Torres, which was a waste of time, best bet is to go on an organised trip to see the surrounding areas. The bar service and choice of drinks was excellent as was the cabin stewards work. Overall we and our friends enjoyed the experience and expect that the odd problems will be ironed out. My wife considered £39 for a wash and blow at the hairdresser to be very expensive. Disembarkation was problem free. We have in fact booked a Caribbean cruise on Explorer for late January next year, so this cruise didn't put us off. Read Less

Booked this cruise as a party of 16 friends who cruise regularly - between us have cruised on Thompson (Marella), Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess and Silver Seas so quite a bit of cruise experience. As a couple we have had 3 previous Thompson cruises including the 2 Discovery ships and expected the same if not better quality of cruise. Unfortunately was distinctly average with real issues with both the itinerary and service on board. Firstly the itinerary “Mediterranean Secrets” the secret was how poor some of the ports of call were! Distinct impression Marella cutting costs by docking at cheapest Med ports - Sete, France - think St Helens with sun. Most disappointing Porte Torres, Sardinia - had really looked forward to this, believe Sardinia a beautiful and exclusive island - to be honest Runcorn is more picturesque - opened curtains to be greeted by what looked like a cement factory. Whoever at Marella visited this port and deemed it suitable to dock a ship of near 2000 tourists needs their head feeling. Following bus ride through industrial docks dispatched to town which consisted of one main street with a church at the top of it. We were back on the boat within 2 hours as were most passengers - awful. Did enjoy Corsica and La Spezzia but overall itinerary poor and misrepresented by the company. On board a mixed bag. Didn’t feel the refurbishment of the ship was as good as the Discovery vessels, ship look and felt worn. Decent cabin with large balcony keep spotlessly clean by our steward Roberto so no complaints there - nice shower and comfy bed. Lacked little touches like the nice toiletries or robes etc. Food good throughout the ship but the service in the main dining room both for breakfast and dinner was very poor. Expect over 2 hours to serve 3 course dinner, in fact on our last night we walked out after 2 courses so as not to miss the show. Breakfast was a lottery as to whether you got what you actually ordered - one day we counted and had to ask for tea 4 times before it finally came. Not enough staff, poorly trained and not well supervised in the dining room. We tried the Kora La, at a supplement of £25 pp - enjoyed dinner and service much better but not value for money if you consider you have already paid for a dinner in your cruise cost. Bar service good throughout, no problems getting served - Joe our favourite bar man on rear outside bar and Squid and Anchor in the evening. Always a smile and gave excellent service. Paid for the upgraded drinks package but not all drinks advertised always available and not in all bars. Also thought reserving the Squid and Anchor exclusively for the “Gold Radio” group until 8.30 pm each evening was not appropriate - surely we had all paid equally for our cruise and should have access to all facilities. As the gin bar was in there passengers who had upgraded their drinks package to get access to the premium gins couldn’t do so, very poor. Entertainment not as good as previous cruises with Thompson. Soul theatre show probably about the best - other entertainment mediocre. Please stop the saxophonist by the pool drove us mad! Comedian on board for a couple of nights was decent. There were clearly problems with toilets on the ship with passengers complaining of loos not flushing and on the day we left the ship public toilets were in very poor condition. So overall has put us off cruising with Thompson/Marella. It’s not a cheap cruise, offers from other cruise lines like RC and Celebrity make them equally affordable. Our next cruise booked with P and O. Read Less

Just returned from a weeks cruise the explorer is lovely ship the cabins have been refurbished a decent shower and plenty of storage we had a small but adequate balcony. The main disappointment was the itinerary which we picked as we had not visited several of the ports before having been on several cruises.Porto Torres was very disappointing 3 of the ports were industrial which meant a bus was needed to get through the port 2 were curtesy 1 was £7.Because the itinerary had been changed our first stop was on a Sunday and everything was shut. The restaurants were generally good the food in the Vista was excellent but the meal took 3 hours from start to finish. The Market Place is a bit like a canteen but a good choice of food. The trips were an absolute rip off we could have done them ourselves at a fraction of the price. The evening entertainment was very good they have tried to do things a bit differently which was not to everyone’s taste as some of the audience did walk out from some of the shows. The comedian was outdated and not very pc.The staff are amazing so friendly and accommodating can’t do enough for you.Personally I found the deck are around the pool very noisy the music was too loud it was often difficult to get a sun lounger round the pool area.I would cruise with TUI again but will research the ports Read Less

We choose to do this cruise as we has been advised that it was family friendly with loads of activities for a three year. Not the case. The ship itself although spotless is a bit tired - I know it has been refurbished but there are areas that are needing a bit of TLC for example the showers needing new screens and not just cleaned, toilet roll holder holes not filled in correctly etc We had a room with a balcony and it was big enough although limited space and storage for three. The first night we arrive the only place opened with the Market Place and that was very limited. In all the food was disappointing particularly if eating here. It is very limited at times and all you can get to drink is milk, water or beer. The other restaurants that we tried including the pasta, tapas and steak are nice and worth waiting on a table. The snack shack at the pool is ok although you soon get fed up with chips. Ice cream should be included in the cost. The entertainment for families particularly with babies and toddlers isn't what we thought. We ended up at the Squid and Anchor every night for a drink and the quiz. During the day there was only the children's club which had a splash pool and some activities. The gym and spa was good a bit of time out and very competitively priced. The pools are very very cold and quite deep along with the fact that children are only allowed in at certain times. It is a nightmare to get a sunbed and even though there is a 45min rule for leaving them unattended I never saw anyone implementing this. The children's pool is a joke and takes you away from the crowd insulating you from any adult company. We had booked trips prior to arrival. When we arrived one had been changed and we specifically asked if it was suitable for us and a pram. We were assured it was. To be honest it was awful we could have done it ourselves for a lot these and had more time to explore. All trips were overpriced and not worth it. There is a lot more I could write about including the rip off cost of Wi-Fi we is extortion but these are the main points. I am very disappointed in the cruise I think it is overpriced and not worth the money Read Less

Both myself and partner Jeanette were on Marella Explorer for western Mediterranean cruise for 2 weeks from June 23rd to July 7th. We were in outside balcony cabin 8071. This was our very first ever cruise so didn’t really know what to expect. The cruise was for my 60th birthday. At the age of 60 and having done most if not all exotic holidays Caribbean, Maldives, Mauritius so on and so on, this has to be the best vacation yet. Flights, transfers, baggage to your room was ‘military planning’. There was something on board for everyone and the ‘standard’ drinks menu was endless with “all” premium bottled and draught beers along with spirits and wine. No need to upgrade, in fact we both wondered what we were upgrading to. The food was delicious with something for everyone and I mean everyone!! The fish and cuts of meat were delicious (try the lamb shank in Latitude restaurant). Our room was great and cleaned “twice a day” by the two relentlessly hard working duo Lewis and Kate a massive thank you to you both. Kate!!! We already miss your welcoming smile each day. I have got to say that “all” the staff worked hard in whatever role they were working in. Nothing was ever too much trouble so it really is difficult here to name names. I have to say a big thank you to both Yassa and Kostia who were working each evening in the Lounge bar. Kostia served everyone in their turn no matter who they were, something bar staff over here in the UK could learn from. Yassa was very competent and so friendly (I hope that your eye is better now). Lastly but not least we would both like to thank Stevan the waiter on the upper decks for his ‘Outstanding’ friendly tireless service. Lastly but not least, the nightly Broadway shows were of premium UK theatre standard, an absolute well done to all of you for giving us both memories we will never forget. Read Less
