This was my first river cruise and I wanted to see Germany, the castles and the vineyards. Everything about this cruise was first class. I loved it all: the daily walking tours, the food, wine tastings and getting to know other passengers. Sailing with Viking was an experience to remember. They had some cooking classes that were fun and the coffee and cookie bars were delightful after coming back from a walking tour. We added on days in Zurich at the beginning and Paris at the end. The tours there were also very well managed, including walking and bus tours. All of the tour guides were very knowledgeable and they got me interested in learning more about the regions. Checking in and out of the hotels was easy and I felt like all of the Viking team members cared about us. I can hardly wait to see the Danube now! Read Less

My wife and I had wanted to go on a river cruise for many years. We chose to do the before and after stays and everything went very well. The river ships are very nice and the cabins are wonderful. The choice of food is just right. The coffee and tea service was nice addition. The local guides for the excursions are very knowledgeable. Good mixture of excursion types and destinations. The cabin was nice and well tended to. Amenities in the room were superior. We liked the deck off our room and used it on most days or evenings. The crew are most helpful, hardworking and attentive. They are really there for you and will do anything in the power to assist everyone. The Rhine River in the spring is perfect. We were lucky to be able to meet up with our cousins who live in Switzerland. This was an added extra that helped us select this specific cruise. Thank you Viking Cruises!!!!! Read Less

It was on part of the river that we sailed our last Viking cruise but could not see anything--the castles on the Rhine--because it was pouring rain and very low on the water clouds/fog. And it was a chance to travel with friends and go on the post-land extension. Cabin steward was great, serving crew was great, cruise director was cute and bubbly, manager was terrific. All in all, all the people were terrific. We were disappointed compared with last cruise: -Food was not of the same quality as we remembered -Last cruise the included wine was different each night and from the area in which we were sailing. This trip the red wine was mostly the same and from Australia and not up to the same quality. White wine was acceptable but loved the idea of drinking wine from the region in which we sail and it typically was not. -Very late in getting info (like a week before) on included excursions and yet we were to sign up ahead. And, you had to log on to find it....no e-notice that anything had been added. All was in place weeks, if not month ahead on last trip If we had wanted to hire our own guide there would not have been time to do so. -We did the post cruise land excursion which was terrific. But did not have a good description of what we would be doing day by day. In fact did not know until the night before what the routine would be, and since we did not get satisfactory information prior to the trip that would have been nice. -We were in Geneva on a Fri and Sat night. Our land guide did not know that the hotel restaurant was closed except for breakfast on the weekend. And had no clue that going into town on public transportation would take an hour rather than the "10 minutes or so" that she told us. No restaurant recommendations "just get off and wander around and there are lots of little places"--which did not open until about 9 I might add. So, we will probably sail once more time on Viking, but this trip was a let down in quality from our prior experience. Have they turned their primary attention to their new ocean branch? Read Less

We have sailed with Viking three times including one ocean cruise on Viking Star from Barcelona to Venice. Our first river cruise was on Viking Var on a Grand European cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. That experience was enough to encourage us to book additional cruises with Viking. On each of previous cruises we were able to visit many historical points in Europe that we've only heard about since each port call included superb guided tours. After each tour we returned to the comforts and wonderful amenities available aboard ship. So we embarked on our Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise with the expectation we would have similar experiences. We were not disappointed!!! We started our adventure with a four day extended stay in Paris before traveling to Trier, Germany to board the longship Viking Hild. The well-appointed ship, excellent amenities, superb crew, delicious foods, and super tour director all lived up the expectations that we had. We enjoyed the included tours as well as several optional tours while cruising the Moselle and Rhine River valleys. Upon arrival in Basel, Switzerland we opted to take a 10.5 hour bus tour from Basel to Zurich via Interlaken which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had an excellent tour guide who ensured that we had a great experience and the scenery was absolutely stunning. After a two day included stay in Zurich we set out with sixty of our fellow travelers for a four day optional tour through Switzerland which included a breathtaking six hour ride on the Glacial Express train through the Alps to the famous resort village of Zermatt. After a wonderful two night stay there we headed for Geneva by bus again through the beautiful Swiss Alpine countryside. Before flying home we spend two days in Geneva. The hotel accommodation in Paris, Zurich, Zermatt and Geneva were first rate! Viking has given us the opportunity to travel extensively in Europe with their all-inclusive cruise packages. We will continue to patronize Viking for our future cruise adventures in fact we have already booked a cruise in the Spring of 2018. Read Less

Viking is always great--no bad surprises ! It was a new ship and a new route. All was smoothly accomplished. Food was outstanding! Service was great. We have taken Viking cruises before; all were excellent, but this one was incredible. The smaller size boats on the river are just great. Quarters are a bit smaller than the ocean cruise ships, but are very comfortable. You ask for something one time--and it's done right away. I also like that the crew speaks English fluently. They take time to converse and make you fell comfortable. It would be hard to beat a cruise like this. Transports from airports, to ships and hotels were a snap. No luggage was misplaced, because you were able to check yours before you boarded transport busses. Tours were great, especially the tour in Paris. Excellent guides and very interesting . We have booked another cruise with Viking. In a few weeks we will explore Scandinavia. We can't wait! Read Less

The food was exceptional. The ports were fantastic and beautiful. The tours and the guides were fun, informative and just perfect. Left the ship in the morning for the tours, back on the ship for lunch and afternoon free to explore the city or lounge on the ship. The entertainment on the ship was wonderful. It's a small ship without a lot of the frills of a big ship but that is part of what I liked about it. All the staff new your name and what your preferences were. It is a beautiful, peaceful cruise through a breathtaking area. I recommend to any adult looking for a Class A trip. I am just counting the days until my next Viking Cruise Read Less

We have always wanted to take a Viking cruise and were able to do so with our relatives from San Diego. From the moment we arrived in Zurich we were in the efficient hands of Viking employees. Everything was handled with great care. I attribute that to our program director, Mathias Von Dort. He was like a camp counselor informing, directing, and accompanying us (the campers) through every part of our trip. The room, while not spacious, was perfect. The meals were wonderful. The tours were all we had hoped for, especially our optional excursion to the Swiss Alps. Our tours where wonderful and expertly handled by local tour guides who had detailed information and amusing anecdotes for each setting. For those concerned about the amount of walking, there was always a "gentle" group that took speed and difficulty of the walking tours into consideration. Our program director ,Mathias, made sure that we were entertained in the evening with great dance and music games that allowed you to meet and interact with many of the other guests on the ship. Above all, the crew was amazing! Whether the room stewards, the wait staff, the bartenders or the officers, everyone was cordial and friendly beyond belief. They also transitioned seamlessly between tasks on the ship which was evidenced by their ability to move our luggage when departing like a well-oiled machine. Everyone from the Captain to the kitchen help worked shoulder to shoulder. As we sadly left for the airport, we were still in the capable hands of Viking employees. Once at the airport, we were escorted to our specific airline counters by yet another employee. We simply could not have asked for a more well managed vacation. Oh, by the way, we have already booked our next Viking cruise for September of 2018! Read Less

We just returned about a week ago from a 7 (?) night cruise on the Rhine on the Viking Hild. Our first trip to Europe. What a wonderful experience. The ship/cruise director Mathias, is about as good at his job as anyone we've ever seen. Super friendly, upbeat, informative, humorous, fun, etc. ... but so was everyone else. You get the feeling they all like what they do and they all get along. The bartenders, servers, etc., all just superb! The excursions (all included) were top notch.... (we chose a couple extra optional ones)... Loved Strasbourg, France!... The Cologne Cathedral is jaw dropping, the medieval castles sop interesting.... Being from Northern California, we are kind of wine snobs. We purchased the beverage package, which is unlimited cocktails, sodas, wines from the dinner wine list, etc. A great value at $300. per couple/room for the entire week.. I think they lost money on us. The nice selection of red wine lacked anything to die for..... By the last night however, we had figured out what was the best red.....and it was not one of the more expensive european ones. It was a less expensive California red. They have no problem if you bring your own wine on board. No corkage fee. Next time we bring a case of assorted killer California reds to last the week. Overall this cruise from 1 to 10 was a 15!!! As avid travelers, who are hard to impress, we can honestly say...we were VERY impressed. We booked through Costco travel, and there was a $700. Costco gift card waiting in the mailbox when we returned.... We also got a $100. on board credit for booking thru Costco, which we applied to our drink package - reducing it to $200. upon settling our bill. Read Less

I chose Viking due to the fact that myself and my family have previously taken a Viking River cruise down the Danube about five years ago and had a spectacular experience. This time we tried the Switzerland to Paris river cruise which took us down the Rhiene and Mosel rivers. What can I say, the Hild, a brand new ship, 2017, was fantastic in all its appointments. The staff was very accommodating in every way, the food was off the hook great, the entertainment was very good and the excursions and guides were top notch. The Captain, Johan was very professional an yet personable along with the Hotel Director, David and the Director of the restaurant, Theresa couldn't be better. The Chef was absolutely top notch, always delighting us with his creations, so great thanks to him. However, the star and hero in a few cases due to unforeseen bumps in the road was Suzie. She was very professional through a couple of rough spots which included a medical emergency and very knowledgeable of where we were, what we would experience and tended to all of the ships guests needs. She certainly is an asset to Viking and deserves a mountain of recognition. Suzie, you made it great for all of us! This cruise would have gotten a solid 5 from me if it wasn't for the Hotel area we were put up for 2 days in Switzerland. The Hotel that Viking chose was in a Techno area of the city, very bland and out of away from the "old" town which I was expecting to stay in. This would have been a much better experience, It kind of painted a less than palatable start for the trip. The Hotel, even though a large one, didn't seem to be ready to accept the number of guests that were arriving. We had to wait for our rooms a very long time. Even then, Suzie stepped in and made things a bit better. Thanks to all, A great trip, would go again if they tweaked the Swiss Hotel issue. Read Less

We chose this Viking River Cruise (VRC) because of the destinations, Switzerland to Paris. Our group was large (14 family members) and we were celebrating my mother's 85th birthday. The entire staff of the Viking Hild catered to us superbly and in a very professional manner. We really appreciate and commend the service of the Maitre De (Teresa) and her entire dining staff, and our Program Director (Susi). The only real negative about this cruise was the pre and post hotel accomodations. We were booked in Zurich at the Renaissance Tower Hotel. The hotel was nice enough but the location in the industrial section of Zurich made sightseeing on our own difficult. VRC could have picked a hotel in a central location near the shopping and dining areas of Zurich. In Paris, we were booked at the Pullman Eiffel Tower. The location was excellent, but the hotel itself was not 4 star quality. Our room was located on the first floor, but it felt like being in the basement/garage. The hallways were dark and claustrophobic. Our room was average and it showed a lot of wear and tear. The in room safe did not work and there was no ice bucket. We contacted the front desk to remedy the situation but it was not resolved. Since we were only there for two nights we just let it be. VRC should also review the Lorelei shore excursion. This excursion was a waste of time. It appeared this excursion was just to take the cruisers to the gift shop. There were other locations on the Rhein and Moselle Rivers which were more interesting and worthwhile. Overall, my family enjoyed our first river cruise and hopefully do another one in the future with VRC. Read Less

I chose this cruise so my husband would have a very nice introduction into Europe. So, I chose it for the ports and land tours. We arrived in Pairs and stayed at the Pullman Eiffel Tower and explored Paris (!) both day and night. We did some on our own and also took the Highlights of Paris tour and then the Montmartre tour with the funniest and knowledgeable Janice. She was absolutely delightful, We then boarded a bus and traveled to Luxembourg and saw the American WWII Cemetery and then on to Trier Germany where we met with the Viking Hild. We cruised the Mozelle and Rhine Rivers by an expert captain and crew. Our Cruise Director Carla was ever so attentive to our stay and excursions. She was so kind and caring. The food was amazing. We also loved dancing to a wonderful Pianist Cezar. You would think we would be tired after sightseeing, but Cezar had us up dancing. Service and cleanliness impeccable. The people at the ports were delightful and our tour guides were so well educated to the area. I liked that you could do all the excursions or just be on your own. We so enjoyed Germany especially Mainz, Spyer and Cochem. We sailed to Strasbourg France - again amazing. Our final cruise stop was Bazel Switzerland. Amazing. We took the option tour of the Alps which was well worth it. We also cruised the lake in Zurich. Travel plans including plane travel, arrival,pick-up and disembarkation were so sooth. Again - Amazing. From the travel person assisting with the reservation on to the cruise and home. So personalized. I loved the volume of passengers. We made great friends and memories. I did not feel like a number. Amazing. My husband so loved Europe and Viking that we already are planning on our next trip soon! Read Less

We went with another couple who had been on a river cruise before. This was our first river cruise although many ocean cruises. The staff from the captain to the room stewards were helpful, friendly and went out of their way to make you happy. My wife was not thrilled with the food at dinner (the taste of the spices used for cooking and sauces). I thought the food was very good. Entertainment is very simple. Local music in some ports and a full time piano player who was excellent. Breakfasts and lunch were very good with plenty of options. Local guides were used at each port and were knowledgeable and articulate. Excursions usually lasted a couple of hours. A lot of cobblestone streets. Some ports required considerable walking, sometimes on rock paths along the levee with stairs to get to street level. Overall the cruise was very enjoyable. I was expecting a little more time on the river, but not disappointed. The ship is very clean and easy to navigate. The cabins are a little small, but they were what I expected. We left the USA early to spent a week in Switzerland. Because of that we had to pay $100 each for "air deviation". When we tried to find out how to get from the airport in Zurich to the hotel (our invoice stated transfers included) we were advised that because of air deviation, transfers were not included and they forgot to tell us. To add a fitting ending to the trip, their contracted shuttle driver dropped us off at the wrong airline gate( on the opposite side of the parking lot. Read Less

Stories of an excellent trip with Viking are true. Paris to Zurich with pre-cruise in Paris and post-cruise in Geneva. Have not seen such personal care, tight scheduling, no issues with transportation, and every staff member, and tour guide and driver, were competent and friendly. Program Director Erna on the pre-cruise and cruise was outstanding. Program Director Annick on the post-cruise was also outstanding. They both took care of the group with patience and vast experience in the travel industry. Viking has gems in both of these gracious and helpful ladies. The Captain and crew did everything in a competent and friendly manner. Food was of high quality and the menu was quite varied. Had cabin 320 Veranda stateroom. Room steward Tyron did a superb job. Many table mates had the drink package, however we did not, and were still happy with the wine/beer included at meals, We did purchase a few drinks outside the meals and may make one rethink the drink package. Hotel accommodations, with the exception of the Zurich Renaissance (location and amenities), were very nice. The audiovox is an excellent item that we had on tours for the individual tour guides to keep in touch with their own group. The Viking Air Department was very helpful and another good value. This cruise was our second river cruise (first time 6 years ago on Peter Dielmann), and we will river cruise again. Read Less

Intimate cruise, all inclusive, no nickel-and-diming us. Excellent guides, great staff, plethora of ports of call. Sooooo much better than previous ocean cruises. We especially liked all of the UNESCO heritage sites and the wine tasting opportunities. We met some amazing people, primarily because we got to see them in an intimate setting throughout the cruise. In fact, we’re cruising with people we met on this cruise again. They have become very good friends. The staff was amazing! They perform multiple duties because it is a very small ship compared to ocean cruisers. They were excellent at all their different jobs. From beginning to end we were pampered and taken care of. We lack for nothing, and didn’t have to purchase anything extra for this trip. It is a bit expensive, but it is worth the money. We still talk about this trip to our friends frequently. We signed up for one twice as long a year later. We are looking forward to cruising with biking again and again. Read Less

Hild and capt johann were awesome. would repeat again. cruise program director emma was awesome. staff was great. food was great. Viking did a magnificent job on the river cruise. 5 stars or more. My "rub" was with the hotels before and after the cruise. in zurich, the renaissance was located away from the city center and we were forced to wait in the lobby for three hours after we arrived before we could enter our room. so, a 12 hour flight experience to get to zurich and a 3 hour wait in a hotel lobby. come on viking!!! Our hotel in paris, the pullman, was past its prime. yes it is next to the eiffel tower, but the room was more 2 star than anything else. Note to viking; the passengers filled out the cruise survey without any feedback on the last two days in parish after disembarking. there is a gap there and if viking really wants feedback then figure out this gap. Because I sell wine, I was interested in seeing some of Alsace and the Mosel valley. We travelled with Viking twice before and were delighted with the cruises, so we chose Viking again, and we were not disappointed. Our two previous cruises were not on the Longships, and we were very very impressed with this newer model. It is spectacular really, with the lovely option of breakfast and lunch on the Aquavit terrace. When it was cold, the doors in the Terrace were closed, but we could still enjoy the passing scenery. On a few gorgeous days, we were able to eat outside, and it was amazing. On the top of the ship is a walking track, which we used on days when we were not on shore a lot. The view from there was excellent. The stateroom we had was a decent size with a nice balcony we used often. The Restaurant was roomy and pleasant. The food on board was delicious for all the meals, and the included wines, though they only alternated from day to day, were 8 choices overall and quite good. The service was marvelous, and though a few of our dinner mates complained, I could find nothing lacking. I thought that the staff worked exceptionally hard and were unfailingly pleasant. The tours on each day varied. We had mainly very interesting tour leaders who maintained our interests, but on a few occasions the tour did not live up to what we had experienced on our other cruises. The optional tours we took were quite good, though, especially the tour of the Alsace wine country with Juliette. She gave us a fascinating tour. The hotels on either end of the tour were good. The Renaissance in Zurich was very nice, and it was a simple, short ride on the tram to central Zurich. We bought our tickets at the hotel and really enjoyed riding the tram with the Swiss. The Pullman in Paris was good, and in a perfect location next to the Tour Eiffel! The metro was super close too, and we hopped on each day to tour. Really, we loved the cruise/tour and the Longship and can't wait to book another cruise. Read Less

Service was excellent, but for the most part the meals were uninspired and when questioned as to variety or quality we received little response. Disappointed in entertainment on the ship, not as good or interesting as on previous cruises. Not much emphasis on artisans from local areas. Tours were very fast with little time to enjoy local culture. Very fast paced with guides who wanted to make certain you saw highlights of every local monument with little time to enjoy the moment! Always felt we were being rushed with little tome to enjoy the moment. Since we were traveling through some world's greatest vineyards, it would have been good to have local growers on board to explain the process of growing their vineyards. The positive advertisements plus the 2 for 1 offer led me to book this cruise. I'd traveled often on the larger cruise ships, thoroughly enjoying each one, and wished to try this smaller cruise. The 7 day cruise itinerary was good. I liked the fact that it was geared to the Leisurely Group and that each day included a tour. The service aboard ship was outstanding both with our staterooms and restaurants. Our Captain, Hotel Mngr, Program Director and Culinary staff and Reception Desk created an atmosphere that exceeded my expectations. Everyone was visible and helpful as well as friendly and thoughtful. However, the Entertainment provided was mediocre. I would have appreciated more ethnic types of entertainment. I was very dissatisfied with the pre trip planning by your Customer Service Department. Our trip got off to a very poor start. I've sent a detailed letter to Viking Supervisors via email. Hopefully this letter will be shared with you. Embarkation and Disembarkation went smoothly. All in all, I do have some very nice memories of this river cruise. Each tour guide was knowledgeable and helpful. The total trip was expensive, so the only optional tour i booked was the the extended Paris trip. This was disappointing in that we weren't able to see much of the Louvre nor Notre Dame Cathedral due to large crowds. We failed to make lunch or dinner reservations in advance for the Eiffel Towel, but took advantage of the restaurants at the Louvre and Musee D' Orsey. The Pullman Hotel, Paris, accommodations at the beginning were not acceptable. However, the staff did their very best to right the situation. The Breakfast Buffet was outstanding...great area...wonderfully casual so we could socialize with other cruise friends. I would recommend Viking to my friends and family. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed the pre-cruise extension of 4 days in Paris. Then sailing along the Mosel river was beautiful with the many vineyards. This cruise also included the Rhine river which has more river traffic than the Mosel but also has the beautiful scenery of many castles. Unlike another Viking River Cruise that we had taken a couple years ago, this cruise was had a much older demographic of passengers (average age was 70+) and some had very limited mobility. There were several with severe health issues and I questioned why they would even attempt this type of trip. Because of this, we felt that the shore excursions were a little too slow paced for us (we are 60 and very active). Viking service and staff are top notch and the boat was only 1 year old so very, very nice. I would have liked to have more entertainment offered in the evenings after dinner. Overall very good cruise but will look for something more active for our next trip. Read Less

We’re 66 and 65 yrs old and a Viking River Cruise has been on our list of things to do for some time. We made reservations with Viking River Cruises for the Swiss Apls to Paris cruise aboard the Viking Hild. We have made server ocean cruises and a small ship cruise of Alaska but this was our first river cruise. We elected to use our accumulated air miles for upgrades for air travel so Viking did not plan our flights. They did arrange transport to the airport for our departure. Due to the flight duration we decided add to our travel plans and arrived several days early to tour Switzerland before meeting up with Viking in Zurich. Without any doubt this cruise was by far our best adventure. Maybe ‘adventure’ is the wrong word to use because everything was perfectly scripted by Viking. The ship was extremely comfortable with lots of natural light and the Scandinavian decor was refreshing. The crew was exceptional. They quickly learned your name and seem to anticipate your request. Meals and wine selection were excellent, either buffet or cooked to order. We had dinner most evenings on the Aquavit terrace (bow) which allowed us to enjoy the weather and stunning views. We selected the beverage package which included a broad selection of premium wines and liquors. I could go on and on but suffice to say we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and are in the process of selecting a longer cruise for 2019. Read Less

We were NOT disappointed and have been bitten by the Viking travel bug! We chose to add 2 extra days in Basel before the cruise started. After an orientation walk by a very informative and personable guide we had plenty of time to discover Basel on our own. Once we boarded The Hild, the onboard staff was all so helpful and friendly. Our stateroom was perfect for the two of us! Our balcony gave us the option to watch the river go by in our pajamas if we chose. We enjoyed the relaxed dining room attire and the food was marvelous! In addition to the included excursions we took at least one extra excursion in each port. Our favorite was probably the Alsatian Wine and Tasting excursion which was as much about strolling through Alsace as it was about tasting wine. We had the pleasure of visiting the Albert Seltz vineyard where we had a direct audience with the vintner himself who was very knowledgeable and friendly. We wish we had added 2 days in Amsterdam to the end of our cruise but that might have to wait for our next trip. We loved that The Hild was small and cozy and not a overwhelming, crazy, floating megalopolis as some cruise ships have felt to us. We would HIGHLY recommend this cruise and Viking! Read Less

This was our 2nd Viking Cruise...the prior one was on the Danube. We wanted to see new/different part of the country so chose the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. The ship was brand new and really lovely. Rooms were comfortable and very well appointed, with very comfortable beds and heated bathroom floors!! The lounges are very nice and the service is beyond belief. All meals are excellant and servers are extremely attentive. I would rate Viking as one of the very best in the business...including service, coordination, cuisine, flight arrangements, transfers...you name it, and it was exceedingly well done. We traveled with friends and made new friends along the way. If you want to see more castles along the river, we commend the Danube. The Rhine is much wider, and more commercially travelled. WE are going on our 3rd in the spring and know it will be just as excellant as the last 2! Read Less

Truly, truly beyond expectation. Everything was expertly handled; ship, cabin (spent very little in), food, leisure time, staff was very professional, but friendly. One morning I looked out the window at breakfast and our wonderful captain was carrying out the garage. Employees worked as a team from all appearances. The inclusive tours were wonderful. I am a widow and have no one to travel with, but I would like to think I will go again. I wish there was a way “singletons” could travel because it is a safe environment to be in on the ship and tours. Speaking of tours, the guides were excellent, personable & knowledgable. All meals were great, chief Adiran was always at the doors to greet cruisers with the other head dining personnel. Meals were quite and leisurely. The young lady in housekeeping for our area was very pleasant and accommodating; going beyond the car of duty. Sorry I can’t remember her name. This being my first river boat cruise, I found the guest services exceptional. Erna our Viking cruise director was so patience with everyone. Plus she extremely knowledgable about EVERYTHING!!!
