To see Cuba and several central American ports was our goal. I have been to Cuba multiple times and was indifferent to the port (my wife's first visit and she was very happy). The hotel stay purchased via Viking was a poorly kempt hotel on the older side. It was not the quality that we would choose to stay and makes us unlikely to stay at a Viking cruise choice of hotels. The Hilton property is not a fine hotel, but a worn middle class facility. The cruise was only disappointing if you expected what was advertised. The restitution was inadequate for a cruise that was far different than what we purchased. A few hundred dollars was given for a future cruise. towards the end of the cruise, I went to purchase several more Viking cruises. I went to the future cruise desk and their was no line. A approached the Viking Cruise future cruise salesperson. He looked up and said, "I.do not talk to people who do not have appoints, I am too busy to speak with you. Sign up for an appointment and we will let you know when to come back. I was incensed and said. "I do not want to talk to you, all I want to do is purchase to more cruises NOW! He backed off and us to buy to two voyages. I was very angry at the time, by wife calmed me down. Not wanting to accept our money and not wanting to sell the cruise is appalling Read Less

We chose this cruise when we saw the exceptionally great price and the itinerary to places we'd never seen. We were very impressed with the Viking staff who helped with the reservations and answering questions post cruise. When you talked to someone there, they knew or got the answers immediately and didn't switch me to another department. They always followed up the conversation with a confirmation of what they'd told me and ask if there is anything else they could do; assuring me that I should feel free to contact them again. The embarkation was seamless and we chose the room on the absolute stern which gave us great views, of both sides and quiet with on one passing our suite. We found that there was amply room for relaxation on the decks and the spa on the lowest deck with so many free amenities; snow room, two different pools, warmed relaxation beds and plenty of loungers w/pads and towels. Also had a steam room. Excursions were free at every port; there were paid for excursions but we found that the free ones suited our needs. We always had plenty of time to explore the cities after the walking tours of the town. Excursions were grouped in small numbers and left at staggered times so that everyone was not at the same place at the same time. Suite was good but storage space was not adequate for folding clothes. Shelf space was taken up with a coffee pot and cups. Beds in our upgraded suite was so close to the closet that you could barely get into it or even bend over to put on your shoes. That needs some addressed on future ships. Food and the restaurants were not that outstanding. Acoustics in all the restaurants were poor. Tables were so close together that talking with your table mates was difficult because everyone had to raise their voice to be hear which led to the noise increasing. The noise level needs some adjustment; perhaps some noise abatement panels. We found that the buffet restaurant was good, however. We ate there often. Every staff person really tried hard to please. Will definitely consider Viking Ocean when we travel again. Viking Ocean is so much better than Viking River. Read Less

We were on the maiden voyage of the Viking Sun from Venice Italy to Athens Greece. This ship is stunning and the staff very efficient. Can you believe the bathroom floors are heated or air conditioned - which ever you prefer? The curtains in the cabin open and close with a touch too. We had two cabins, 5082 and 5080 and both met our needs perfectly. Just a note - the beds have feather pillows which you can have switched out if you want. Unfortunately we had need for the services of the medical staff - thanks for their caring attention! We found the meals to be excellent and served quickly. The evening buffet had whatever was on the menu for The Restaurant. Less crowded. Reservations are needed for The Chef's Table. Mixed reviews on the fixed menu by the four of us. (I hated it) Reservations are also needed for Manfredi's. This is where we had our worst service and the food - just ok. Many lunches we at The Pool Grill - yum. I suggest buying the silver beverage plan. With meals you get upgraded wine and of course alcohol. Two in our party are Gluten Free and our needs were well taken care of. The machines in the laundry were free as well as the detergent. As for entertainment - we only saw a few but enjoyed what we saw. It was great that at the beginning of the cruise all the officers of the ship were introduced and they were even seen walking around during the week! Rare indeed. The cruise director was very hands on. My husband and I are in our late 50's and our children 28 and 25 were with us. Unfortunately we found the variety of the shore excursions to be poor and not "active" enough. I suggest finding noncruise ship excursions for some cities. My son and I took the excursion to Medjugorje.in Bosnia. Not enough time was given to this religious experience. Note - the other guests on the ship were NOT the oxygen, walker crowd. We were very busy enjoying our ports and didn't get much chance to use the pool, spa, gift shops etc. The Viking Sun has A LOT to offer. Note - we left out of Venice and ended up in Athens the beginning of Oct, and I expected the temps to be a little warmer. I highly recommend the Viking Sun for a lovely cruise. This is not your typical cruise where the horn blows when you leave port or there are constant announcements over the PA - it is very classy but not formal. Read Less

Itinerary... and value! My brother and I have always wanted to visit Portugal and the Bahamas, which were both spectacular. The stop in the Azores was an additional treat! The crew was exceptional, and the entertainment surpassed my expectations. (I am a musician, and have high expectations.) Well done in every respect. Even my trip to the Ship's Doctor for a sinus infection was a highlight! The speaker for the cruise was also a highlight, as was our visits to the two specialty restaurants. Our cabin was spacious and comfortable, and the public rooms were wonderfully laid out and beautifully decorated. Bravo! We especially liked the small - but very informative - exhibit on Vikings. Very well done, as was everything else on the cruise. We hope to do another Viking Ocean cruise in the future... having now done two river cruises and one ocean cruise. Viking is exceptional in every respect. Read Less

An unexpected maiden voyage of this beautiful ship. While many joked that it had a new car smell, we would have appreciated knowing in advance that we were the guinea pigs. That said, there were very few teething problems, and the ship operated smoothly. In particular, the universally pleasant, cheerful, helpful, and polite staff were a cut above other ships. They made a big difference in our day. The cruise went from Venice to Athens. We spent a few days in each outside the cruise. The ship was expected to be a recharging interlude, but the ports and tours were so good that we were kept hopping every day. Embarkation at both ends was a breeze, with many staff pointing out the direction to go in a potentially confusing port. Our junior suite was well laid out, with a balcony that actually allowed you to move around and stretch a bit. It included laundry service and a well stocked mini bar. Room service was excellent. We had breakfast sent up most days. The food won't win any awards, but it is certainly adequate. It's a smaller ship, so there's a buffet and two upscale restaurants. One focused on Nordic food, which didn't appeal, leaving only the other Italian style option. There's also a grill at the pool, and small bistro in the explorers lounge. The buffet is adequate, but choices are limited. The lineup for the gelato bar in the desert section is a tip off that the rest of the selection isn't much. There’s a magnificent Nordic spa area with huge bubble pool, saunas, steam room, cold plunge pool, a cold bucket splash and snow room. Alas the large bubble pool broke the first day and didn’t get fixed until the last. A major disappointment as it figured in our decision to take this ship. The steam room needs more light. It’s dark to the point of unsafe. I wish the saunas weren’t on timers during opening hours, as you sometimes have to wait a while for them to heat up. The gym is very well equipped. The hot tub jets in both the main and infinity pools were often broken, but the heat did work. There’s a broad range range of books throughout the ship. The public areas are surprisingly peaceful, with the explorers lounge having a two level view forward. Bars are never far away, and wait staff are attentive. Liquor and wine prices were very reasonable, and often included. Entertainment was low key. A classical trio, pianist, and a string player are the mainstays. No rock bands into the wee hours here. The included shore excursions were excellent. We took 3 which all had a bus and walking tour in groups of around 25 people for 2-3 hours. The optional excursions were equally good. We took two, and the Kotor trip through the mountains is not to be missed. While not Viking's fault, a couple of ports were swamped with people. Kotor is a small town, and 4 cruise ships dumped 5,000+ people into it. We escaped via an optional tour, but even when we returned some hours later, our guide could hardly get us around the town. Corfu wasn't much better. Oh, and don’t miss afternoon tea. It sounds quaint, but is well done. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary, the newness of the ship, the fact that it would not have young children aboard and there was no casino. We had taken a Viking river cruise and wanted to see the layout of the new ocean liners. We knew the food and service would be the best and it did not disappoint. The ship was spectacular with no crowds or lines anywhere. We liked the fact that there was a gym, several pools, and choices of restaurants. We are very private people and loved that you could get a table for two with no trouble. We enjoyed the free beer & wine at lunch, dinner and room service. Our cabin (deluxe veranda) was adequate for storage and the bathroom had plenty of room for everything. We both LOVED the heated floors! Favorite eating place was Manfredi's, the Italian restaurant. The tiramisu presentation was very unusual and I loved it. Least favorite was Chef's Table although you can substitute with a little warning if you prefer something like chicken from the Restaurant instead of a main fish course. WE LOVED breakfast at Mamsen's. NO crowd at all and delicious waffles. Try not to miss it. On our cruise The Restaurant (main dining room) was short on staff and the meal took WAY too long with long waits between courses. The included shore excursions gave us an overview of each port and there were plenty of optional excursions to choose from if we were already familiar with a port. Groups were small and we appreciated everyone being on time and excited about each outing. We will definitely book another Viking ocean cruise, probably in the Caribbean next time. Read Less

This was our second ocean cruise and we liked the first Viking Cruise Ship (Viking Sky) starting on Feb. 25, 2017 so much that we booked this second trip on the Viking Ocean Cruise line on the sister ship the Viking Sun starting on October 4, 2017. It was so nice that we have already booked a third cruise with Viking. We also had marvelous extensions on both ends of the cruise first in Florence and then in Athens. While we had been to Florence, Venice, and Athens once before (over 20 years ago) this gave us a chance to see some new things and revisit a few fantastic places too. The pre-extension was essentially all inclusive with wonderful food and locales for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and great included tours of Florence, Sienna, and San Gimignano. It was a small group and we received personal attention but also had enough free time at each site. We stayed at a wonderful villa in the Tuscan countryside near Florence. We then had a good and quick bus ride to Venice where we boarded the Viking Sun and found it even more inclusive, luxurious, and wonderful. We had included and few extra special tours of Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, and Olympia. The food on the ship was fantastic. There were great and uncrowded hot tubs, pools, and infinity pool. There was some nice entertainment and great bars throughout the ship. The food was very nice with two great specialty restaurants (included), a formal restaurant, and a buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Obviously we put on weight even with the walking tours! Finally we had a fantastic extension in Athens with a tour of the acropolis and museum and then tours of the Pelopenese and Delphi. Great included lunches and time on our own for great dinners in Athens. Viking handled the transfers very well and smoothly picked us up at the Florence airport and dropped us off at thee Athens airport. Somehow both of our Viking Ocean cruises have been the inaugural trip for each ship. Both went very smoothly. Read Less

Having sailed with Viking before on rivers and the ocean, we were interested in the destinations for this cruise. We were very disappointed to learn we would not visit Kotor as scheduled and our tours in Venice were also cancelled because of fog. The service on board was excellent in most areas but not so in The Restaurant. Most of the staff were excellent but some could not get our orders right. The food was good but not exceptional and the lobster that was served to one of us tasted peculiar and made him sick. The guest speakers were not as interesting or dynamic as on previous voyages. The music in the Atrium was delightful. Overall we felt the experience was being "dumbed-down" to some lower common denominator whereas previous voyages with Viking were elevating. Our included walking tours of Corfu and Split were very good. Our Dalmation Coast Wine & Food tour in Dubrovnik was excellent as was our Tuscany extension. Read Less

Brand new ship on its second trip. Beautiful ship and very comfortable. The staff was new to the ship and many were new to their jobs but they worked very hard to make the trip pleasant. Overall our party of 4 were very pleased with the staff, most of whom were either from the Phillipines or China. All of the new staff were very friendly and seemed to enjoy the interaction between the cultures. Most of the Chinese were young and very friendly and very polite and eager to please. Shipboard experience was great! This was our fourth Viking cruise and first on their small ships. The only advice that we four travelers can give is DO NOT USE THE VIKING AIR SERVICES -- BOOK YOUR OWN FLIGHTS. We have used the Viking air services twice now but never again will we be so stupid. The first time we were forgiving and just wrote it off as a one time bad experience, but now that we used them twice, Viking proved to be totally a bunch of idiots. They choose bad schedules, bad airlines, and have zero flexibility of choosing good seats or getting upgrades. Houston to Toronto was on a small jet, and Toronto to Athens was miserable on Air Canada with no movies whatsoever, poor service, crappy food. Can you imagine 9 hours on a boring flight with no movies; we have been to Europe many times and never experienced no entertainment to pass the time. And, our party of four was booked on different flights with differing schedules as well. Overall a bad experience both leaving and returning to Houston -- NEVER AGAIN. Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise. We had been on others with other cruise lines but Viking really knows how to create a relaxing vacation. They coordinated tours and activities very efficiently. Everything they put together on and off the boat was perfect. The atmosphere on the ship was very quiet and calm. Maybe that''s because no kids were on board and there was no casino. Whatever the reason, we loved it! We spend extra time at both ends of the cruise to allow us to explore the cities. When we arrived at checkin, there were no long lines and we were ushered to the ramp to get on the ship. We were greeted with champaign which was much appreciated after a hectic morning getting checked out of our hotel (which we booked) and getting some shopping in. Our room wouldn't be ready for a while so we got a bite to eat and relaxed by the pool while listening to the live band. It set the tone for a great trip. I took my daughter in law on this cruise with me. The ship was pristine, and the crew incredible. Our every need was addressed (not that we had many due to the amenities). The food was wonderful, and the entertainment opportunities were great. If we wanted to have a quiet night and just have a glass of wine, there was a place for that. If we wanted to listen to music there was many options in different areas of the ship. The shore excursion choices were many, depending on how much walking you wanted to do. The evening port talks were always educational. My daughter in law is an artist and enjoyed the art on the ship and the ambiance the ship provided. The whole experience with Viking is exactly how I expected, always the best. I can't praise Viking enough, and I am looking forward to my next cruise with them in November. Read Less

We have sailed on Viking River Cruises so trying Viking Ocean made sense. Inaugural cruise, around the world, why not? We were very pleased with the entire experience, we met wonderful people, travelers and crew. Small ship meant that we didn’t overwhelm any one location. Sea days were great, so many activities so little time to fit them in. Shore excursions were a mixture of highlights bus tours and overnights off the ship giving everyone a choice of how they want to spend their time. On sea days cooking classes were offered, hands on with new foods and new tastes to try. Buffets, dinning room and specialty restaurants offered a wide variety of choices. Sushi, pizza and wonderful gelato we offered everyday. We were never wanting for food as snacks were available. Cruise director and staff kept things moving smoothly. Would we do it again, absolutely, and we are going to finish sailing around the world in August 18. Read Less

In 2016 we took our first VIking River cruise and were so impressed that we booked our first VIking ocean cruise the following year. My husband and I have cruised often (Diamond status with Royal Caribbean and Elite with Celebrity). VIking definitely has a different feel. It is more relaxed and upscale. Embarkation in Venice was easy and quick. We booked air transportation on our own since we included extra days in Italy pre and post cruise. We traveled with four friends and had three cabin next to each other on deck 5. Everything is new and sparkling clean on the Sun. We found the cabin to have adequate space for storing clothes and toiletries. We liked the location across from the launderette, which all of us used more than once. There never was a time we could not access a washer or dryer. Late afternoon and early evening seemed to be the busiest times. You really need to read the directions to make sure detergent is added. That is located separate from the stacked washer/dryer. We dined at Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s and enjoyed both. We never had an issue getting seated at a table for six in The Restaurant. The majority of the tables are for two, but some are located close to other tables so you could have conversations with others if you chose to On one occasion we all felt too full, after having a large lunch at port, to eat a multi-course meal. We were surprised when we checked out the World Cafe and found a seafood bar with crab legs, large prawns, and an excellent sushi bar. We loved the crab legs and sushi as well as other dishes there. We all purchased the Silver drink package and found it to be a good value for us. Viking’s prices on the drink menu are reasonable compared to other cruise lines but we liked being able to choose more wine options as well as Grey Goose vodka and Makers Mark bourbon cocktails. Also when we travel with friends, we find ourselves enjoying the cocktail lounges more. Explorer Lounge was our favorite. We booked five included excursions and two at additional cost. The only one we should have skipped was the included tour in Messina. It was just a bus tour of the city rather than a walking tour. We did not have time for any enrichment lectures and only saw one show in the theatre. We all loved the spa area with the warm bubbling pool, snow grotto, steam room, etc. The Deck 7 pool area was very nice but our weather was just a bit cool to enjoy the pool. The retractable roof made the area usable every day. My husband and I used the small gym a couple of times. It was almost always empty. It would have been nice to have at least one sea day to enjoy more of the ship’s amenities but this itinerary visited a port each day. Frankly, we loved our vacation and have no complaints at all. We are not very hard to please but one does have expections when paying Viking’s prices. We all felt VIking delivered on all fronts and we will definitely cruise with them again. I cannot wait! Always wanted to see Italy. Been to France, Germany, aAmsterdam, Switzerland, Great Britain. I had already been on a River cruise up the Rhine and liked it very much. Viking offers the elements that are important to me. Trip to the departure port was very long and tiring though. No direct flight. Changed planes 3x. Cabin ok. Comfortable beds. Dining very creative. Especially liked the Italian restaurant. Food was good. Service excellent. Excursions excellent but little time to shop. Also shops closed in afternoon which added to problem of little time to shop. Excursion to the farmhouse where we helped make the pasta was the best!! We were lucky to have another excursion where we ate home cooked Italian food. I would love to go to Italy again but the plane trip is just too much for me. I have been on many cruises but Viking Cruises are the best. A little pricey but worth it. Thank you for such an enjoyable and memorable time. The entertainment crew were very good. Especially liked the Beatles night as I am a BIG fan of Paul McCartney. Also, my daughter was with me and she fell during an excursion and was very sore afterward. The tour guide reported it to the ship personnel. I was upset that no one contacted us from the ship just to see if she was ok. Read Less

We have done 3 Viking Cruises now, 2 river and 1 ocean. All three have been truly an experience to remember and all good. The ship was brand new which made it even better. The crew was very eager to make a good impression (which they did). All of the cabins have an ocean view with a veranda which make for excellent sightseeing as you enter and leave port. Not much else as most of the cruising is done at night away from shore. The cabins are roomy enough as little time is spent there since there are plenty of activities to participate in or entertainment to view. The service as always is impeccable and it always seems the staff is there just for you but they take care of everyone the same. Sitting in the Explorers Lounge on the bow or the Aquavit Terrace on the stern really allows an individual to relax and get to know your fellow cruisers or just sit and contemplate where you are and enjoy the view. This is not a family type cruise meant for young children and there is no casino or climbing wall or zip lines. It's for those that want to learn and think about their place in the world. Shore excursion are plentiful and there is at least one included in the fare each day with other optional one available. Sometimes it's hard to chose but you can;t do it all in one voyage. We are already signed up for another River Cruise in France for my 65th. Can't wait. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of Viking's excellent reputation for river cruising and hoped it carried over to the ocean. It did - everything about this brand new ship is beautiful. The artful design of every space is stunning. The amenities are all you can ask for and the service is warm, friendly and efficient. Mark the cruise director could not be more pleasant. The excursions have all been very informative and enjoyable. The included excursion in Crotone (the only port where we did not book an optional excursion) was just OK. My favorite excursions were the olive grove in Bari, and Pompeii in Naples. The one place where they FAILED MISERABLY is the specialty restaurant reservations that are "guaranteed" with certain cabin levels. We attempted to book them online within 2 hours of when they opened (in August) but were told that all tables for 2 were already booked and we could not book a seat at a shared table online - that would have to be done onboard. While frustrating, we were assured we could book any time once onboard. When we arrived at the ship the first day we were ushered to lunch upon arrival. When we finished lunch we went to the cabin and immediately called for our shared table reservations. The line just rang and rang for several attempts. We went to guest services and they said that you could only make dinner reservations during breakfast and lunch hours (which were now over for the day). The experience of trying to reach someone by phone and just hearing it ring was very frustrating and could have easily been avoided by adding a message stating the hours that reservations are accepted and not making me walk to guest services to find that out. The next morning we had an early excursion and didn't get to attempt to book our two "guaranteed" reservations until early afternoon on the first day of the cruise. At that time we were told that all reservations in the specialty restaurants were already taken and we would be put on the waitlist. I explained that we had booked a better cabin on the ship so that we would be guaranteed reservations in Manfredi's and the Chef's Table and they just said sorry - they are already all booked. We were put on the waitlist and on the last night were finally given a time slot at the Chef's Table restaurant. It was very good and I would have loved to try Manfredi's as well. Maybe next time. Thereafter, every time we saw her, she remembered us and called us by name. Very nice. Very professional. The food was incredible. Wait staff was incredible! LOVED the Italian Dining Room. On our next Viking Ocean Cruise, we'll make multiple reservations to go there!. Our Cabin Steward, Komang, was extraordinary. Very attentive to our every need. Very friendly and courteous. This was our third cruise with Viking Ocean and it was on their newly launched Viking Sun. The cruise stopped at interesting ports and we hit a sale that worked for our budget. We have always experienced excellent and friendly service from the crews and their embarkation, disembarkation and shore excursion procedures are well managed and punctual. We used the "Roll Call" to connect with some fellow travellers a few months before the cruise and were able to set up some great private shore excursions and activities. Getting to meet some of our fellow cruisers at the Meet & Greet was great and made for good travel and dinner companions during the cruise. Viking includes in their price a lot of things that with other cruise lines show up as extra charges in your statement at the end of cruises. This avoids the shock that otherwise happens on the last days of a cruise. Read Less

We chose this Mediterranean cruise because it offered 11 ort stops counting Rome. Unfortunately we missed one, Marseille, due to stormy weather. We experienced amazingly good weather except for that one overnight. This new ship is totally awesome, and perfect in every way. Lots of comfortable area, indoors and out, to sit and relax. The cabin was perfectly laid out with plenty of closet space, a large bathroom with heated floor, large shower and lots of towels. Good lighting and a large vanity with excellent storage shelves and drawers. The bed was amazing with lovely, fresh linens. Had a great sleep every night. The sitting area was comfortable with two chairs, a coffee table and desk. The balcony had comfy furniture and was a good size. The food was excellent quality, delicious with a huge variety including a sushi bar. There were many excellent choices of seafood every day as well as meat and vegetables, and all cooked to perfection. Breakfast offered an egg station where you could order any type of eggs. Eggs Benedict was offered every day. We experienced tours that were inclusive and ones we purchased. Every tour was top notch with excellent guides. Two times we did experience poor buses with dirty windows and torn seats. This was the only negative on the whole vacation. Viking staff are the best...they are organized, polite, friendly and intuitive. They make every effort to get to know you and provide you with your every need. They are an amazing group of people and I cannot commend them enough. They are the best part if the cruise. We did the pre cruise stay in Rome which was lovely. The Grand Hotel Palace was situated perfectly, although thought it was rather expensive for the room type we had. Very basic room. No coffee maker and no coffee available in the lobby. Breakfast was poor. We were not given any suggestions when we inquired about excursions (from host) other than we could share a taxi with others. We did manage ok on our own with the hop on-off bus and did enjoy this part of our vacation. Just thought it was expensive for what we received when compared with other Viking pre and post stays purchased in the past. Read Less

The ship itself is great. Need more visible overhead hallway signage for elevators and, more importantly, REST ROOMS as these are impossible to find unless you are standing right in front of them. Need more overall bar service attendants any time passengers are on board and the ship is moving. The volume in the theater should be increased for movies and presentations. Repeat the presentations for in-cabin TV's. More American sports broadcasts, especially American football--it is a tradition on Thanksgiving Day. We were there over Thanksgiving and there were no decorations. Food in the main restaurant was fine but not so with the food on Deck 7. The food was never warm, let alone hot. Quality there was just fair. The burgers, however, were great ( this was the same situation as on our first Ocean cruise-Barcelona to Venice). Our Cuba tour guide was very difficult to understand-her accent was very heavy. Since Cuba wants more American tourists, signs with the photos in the Bay of Pigs Museum should also be in English. We did not have time to see the 20 minute film in the museum. No washcloths in the hotel (they don't have them). Hotel breakfast was great. The dinner before the show was fine and the show was spectacular! Would be good to have a "non smoking" area at the show facility, especially since they give out free cigars to all of the men. Americans are very accustomed to smoke-free areas in venues like this. Read Less

Everything about this cruise was top notch. The itinerary and ports of call were cities/areas that we wanted to visit. Beginning in Rome and ending in Lisbon was fabulous....what could be better! The shore excursions were well planned and all of our guides were very knowledgeable, friendly, articulate and engaging. Our ship, the Viking Sun, was beautiful and meticulously cleaned and maintained and our cabin was perfect in size and amenities. Dining options were plentiful and the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed Manfredi's! The Chef's Table, The Restaurant and the buffet in the World café was excellent as well. Service on board was superb.....from our cabin stewards to wait staff all were very personable and made our voyage very enjoyable. The Viking Classical Trio, resident pianist Grego and resident guitarist Laszlo presented beautiful music in the atrium. Port talks were very informative and gave us insights into our next port of call. We will definitely book another ocean cruise with Viking. Read Less

We had been wanting to do a Mediterranean cruise and this Itinerary came available on short notice. (We don't like planning 18 months ahead to take a cruise) We have travelled before with Viking and knew the level of excellence to expect. The food choices were wonderful. Lots of seafood. Also several specialty eating places. We were in a port everyday which did not allow us to enjoy all the amenities on the ship. There were port excursions from free to several hundred dollars. Be sure to review all the excursion info and sign up before you get on the ship. The popular ones fill up fast. If the excursion you want is full, be sure to wait list it. There were so many choices it was hard to pick just one each day. Two days in Barcelona is not enough time to see all the major sites. In Malaga, Spain be sure to visit Nerja to see the "Balcony of Europe". Recommend extra days in Rome and Lisbon on each end of the cruise. So much to see in both cities. If you fly out of Lisbon allow yourself 3 hours to get through their airport system. As expected, Viking personnel provided excellent service. Everyone greeted you and no matter who you asked for assistance, they stopped what they were doing and helped you even if it was not in their area. Read Less

This was a Trans Atlantic Cruise, the first for The Viking Sun, but not the first for my spouse and I. The ship is lovely in every way. It's comfortable, uncrowded, quiet, and supremely well appointed. If it were rated as a hotel (and after all an ocean cruise ship today is a floating hotel/resort) it would be 5 star. The spa is beyond belief. It is open to all passengers unlike on most other cruise ships we have been on. The spa pool is wonderful, as are the hot and cold rooms. The fitness center overlooks the side of the ship instead of the front or rear. It took a bit of getting used to this view while using some of the exercise equipment. The equipment was all new and very state of art. The service in the room was outstanding, with water and towels being provide without needing to ask. What was lacking were daily classes such as a morning stretch class, or ab class, or something such as this. There were classes, but they did not take place daily and weren't specifically stretch, or something like that. The main dining room, called "The Restaurant" needs a new name. The service was excellent, the quality was very good, but the preparation was not up to the standards that one expects on a luxury cruise cruise or fine hotel. As for the alternate dining at Manfredi's Italian was marginal and way too noisy. We dined there twice and both meals were not very good and most certainly not very Italian except by name. The Chefs Table is best described as silly dining. The menu items were interesting and a few of the dishes were quite good. But the dishes didn't work together to make a meal. I would not waste my time eating a dinner in this restaurant. The World Cafe offers the best prepared food on the ship. We don't enjoy buffet dining. But we found ourselves eating at the Cafe one evening after a long day ashore. We had to go back there a few more times because their menu was the same as in "The Restaurant" and was prepared better. As for "The Restaurant" my recommendation is to change the name to "The Dining Room" Fine hotels don't serve fine meals in a restaurant! Read Less

We were returning from a driving tour of Scandinavia. The timing of the cruise met our needs. Viking River Cruise experienced; looking forward to a Viking ship. The Viking Sun is a first class experience. Right sized. Lots of space. Area for improvement- on board booking for future sailings. After an informative one hour overview, only one representative on board, was insufficient. No email contact. Response to a hand written inquiry on a 2018 cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver was via a voicemail to our Cabin. No return voicemail available. We were advised we were ‘wait listed’. Would receive no on ship booking incentives. Oh well. That said... The overall facilities are fantastic. The Crew was well educated with experience on Regent and Celebrity where we had sailed. We continually thanked the Crew for their ever present smiles and thoughtfulness. Looking forward to our next Viking Salinger experience. Alaska? Asia? Read Less

Just did the Mid Atlantic crossing on this ship from Lisbon to Miami. First off the ship in nicely laid out. Really liked all the quiet areas of the ship where you could play games or read a good book. We had a deluxe verandah cabin and it was very comfortable. Especially liked the heated bathroom floors. Our cabin steward was the best one we have had after 17 cruises. I really liked the promenade deck, one time around was 1/4 of a mile. The two specialty restaurants were very good. Service in these restaurants was good to excellent. Embarkation was a breeze, again the fastest we have had in 17 cruises. I would have liked a ship with a casino but we knew that this did not exist on the Viking Sun well before we boarded. Ate dinner in the main dining room two nights, the first night the service was poor. They failed to deliver all of our group of 6 appetizers on time as well as some being appetizers that we did not order. The next visit we made was vastly improved in service. We did however eat at a different table with different waiters. The world buffet restaurant was okay but the passenger flow in this area can be congested especially for breakfast. The waiter service on both pool areas was poor to good. Almost seemed short staffed in a way and or not sufficiently trained. Because of inconsistent service I found myself clearing the table of dirty dishes and getting myself something to drink. Sat by the main pool 5 days reading a book, I was offered water twice but not once did a waiter or waitress ask me if I wanted something to drink. By the way I had purchased the silver spirit drink package before the cruise. So if I wanted alcohol I would have to go to the bar and get it myself. I have been on Oceania cruises before and this was never an issue. Getting off the ship did not go well, we were supposed to be off the ship at 7:00AM and on our bus to the airport at 7:30. We could not leave ship until 7:25AM, so something went wrong here. Not sure what the problem was. I was debating to rate this ship either 3 or 4 and decided on 4 because of an overall nice layout and design of the ship. I still prefer Oceania and Celebrity but would consider Viking again if the deal and itinerary were right. Read Less
