The Viking Sun was seven week old when we boarded -- gorgeous! Some rough spots with a new ship, but minimal and resolved. But the itinerary was lacking --- way too much time on buses (nice as they were, with great tour guides). If the ship was too large to go into to the shallow Havana harbor, why not stay outside the harbor and use the tenders since it had to use these in Cienfuegos anyway? Overall food and service were good, but service was much better for dinner when 300 people were still off-ship on excursions. We were disappointed in the Italian speciality restaurant -- menu was plastic, crowded tables; service and food were OK, but not special. The Captial Table speciality restaurant was excellent -- interesting fixed menu, with supurb service. We heartily recommend the Viking Sun, but not the itinerary if only one port in Cuba. As far as we knew there was not an outreach to the LGBT community until we asked for a designated meeting place. On other cruise lines this has been included in their standard schedule. Viking did accommodate an announcement after we asked (with a very good turn out), but no one from staff came to welcome us, as is typical on other lines. Disappointing overall. Read Less

We were returning from a driving tour of Scandinavia. The timing of the cruise met our needs. Viking River Cruise experienced; looking forward to a Viking ship. The Viking Sun is a first class experience. Right sized. Lots of space. Area for improvement- on board booking for future sailings. After an informative one hour overview, only one representative on board, was insufficient. No email contact. Response to a hand written inquiry on a 2018 cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver was via a voicemail to our Cabin. No return voicemail available. We were advised we were ‘wait listed’. Would receive no on ship booking incentives. Oh well. That said... The overall facilities are fantastic. The Crew was well educated with experience on Regent and Celebrity where we had sailed. We continually thanked the Crew for their ever present smiles and thoughtfulness. Looking forward to our next Viking Salinger experience. Alaska? Asia? Read Less

Just did the Mid Atlantic crossing on this ship from Lisbon to Miami. First off the ship in nicely laid out. Really liked all the quiet areas of the ship where you could play games or read a good book. We had a deluxe verandah cabin and it was very comfortable. Especially liked the heated bathroom floors. Our cabin steward was the best one we have had after 17 cruises. I really liked the promenade deck, one time around was 1/4 of a mile. The two specialty restaurants were very good. Service in these restaurants was good to excellent. Embarkation was a breeze, again the fastest we have had in 17 cruises. I would have liked a ship with a casino but we knew that this did not exist on the Viking Sun well before we boarded. Ate dinner in the main dining room two nights, the first night the service was poor. They failed to deliver all of our group of 6 appetizers on time as well as some being appetizers that we did not order. The next visit we made was vastly improved in service. We did however eat at a different table with different waiters. The world buffet restaurant was okay but the passenger flow in this area can be congested especially for breakfast. The waiter service on both pool areas was poor to good. Almost seemed short staffed in a way and or not sufficiently trained. Because of inconsistent service I found myself clearing the table of dirty dishes and getting myself something to drink. Sat by the main pool 5 days reading a book, I was offered water twice but not once did a waiter or waitress ask me if I wanted something to drink. By the way I had purchased the silver spirit drink package before the cruise. So if I wanted alcohol I would have to go to the bar and get it myself. I have been on Oceania cruises before and this was never an issue. Getting off the ship did not go well, we were supposed to be off the ship at 7:00AM and on our bus to the airport at 7:30. We could not leave ship until 7:25AM, so something went wrong here. Not sure what the problem was. I was debating to rate this ship either 3 or 4 and decided on 4 because of an overall nice layout and design of the ship. I still prefer Oceania and Celebrity but would consider Viking again if the deal and itinerary were right. Read Less

We chose the cruise to see how Viking compared with the other transatlantic we have done. Other than Azamara, this was the smallest ship we sailed in. The Sun was spanking new and nicely decorated, with much Scandinavian art on display. It was a comfortable ship even on the few days we had some moderate waves. We especially enjoyed the entertainment, provided by the very talented but small group of singers and dancers. The ship's house band, and especially its pianist-conductor, were very good and all the shows were very entertaining. We appreciated hearing some classical music. The lecturers aboard were fairly interesting, but seemed to be scheduled at odd times. We especially enjoyed the ones given by a gentleman who was an author and filmmaker and showed scenes from old movies. Our major disappointment was with the food on the ship. We did not care for the menu selections in the main restaurant, nor did we think the selections both in the buffet and the main dining room were very well prepared and/or tasteful. On the occasions that we ate in the speciality restaurants, we were much more pleased. Another disappointment in the main dining room, was the problem in sitting at a table that we could shared with others. We enjoy doing this in order to meet more people, and this did not seem to be encouraged on this ship. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of Viking's excellent reputation for river cruising and hoped it carried over to the ocean. It did - everything about this brand new ship is beautiful. The artful design of every space is stunning. The amenities are all you can ask for and the service is warm, friendly and efficient. Mark the cruise director could not be more pleasant. The excursions have all been very informative and enjoyable. The included excursion in Crotone (the only port where we did not book an optional excursion) was just OK. My favorite excursions were the olive grove in Bari, and Pompeii in Naples. The one place where they FAILED MISERABLY is the specialty restaurant reservations that are "guaranteed" with certain cabin levels. We attempted to book them online within 2 hours of when they opened (in August) but were told that all tables for 2 were already booked and we could not book a seat at a shared table online - that would have to be done onboard. While frustrating, we were assured we could book any time once onboard. When we arrived at the ship the first day we were ushered to lunch upon arrival. When we finished lunch we went to the cabin and immediately called for our shared table reservations. The line just rang and rang for several attempts. We went to guest services and they said that you could only make dinner reservations during breakfast and lunch hours (which were now over for the day). The experience of trying to reach someone by phone and just hearing it ring was very frustrating and could have easily been avoided by adding a message stating the hours that reservations are accepted and not making me walk to guest services to find that out. The next morning we had an early excursion and didn't get to attempt to book our two "guaranteed" reservations until early afternoon on the first day of the cruise. At that time we were told that all reservations in the specialty restaurants were already taken and we would be put on the waitlist. I explained that we had booked a better cabin on the ship so that we would be guaranteed reservations in Manfredi's and the Chef's Table and they just said sorry - they are already all booked. We were put on the waitlist and on the last night were finally given a time slot at the Chef's Table restaurant. It was very good and I would have loved to try Manfredi's as well. Maybe next time. Having sailed with Viking before on rivers and the ocean, we were interested in the destinations for this cruise. We were very disappointed to learn we would not visit Kotor as scheduled and our tours in Venice were also cancelled because of fog. The service on board was excellent in most areas but not so in The Restaurant. Most of the staff were excellent but some could not get our orders right. The food was good but not exceptional and the lobster that was served to one of us tasted peculiar and made him sick. The guest speakers were not as interesting or dynamic as on previous voyages. The music in the Atrium was delightful. Overall we felt the experience was being "dumbed-down" to some lower common denominator whereas previous voyages with Viking were elevating. Our included walking tours of Corfu and Split were very good. Our Dalmation Coast Wine & Food tour in Dubrovnik was excellent as was our Tuscany extension. Read Less

Brand new ship on its second trip. Beautiful ship and very comfortable. The staff was new to the ship and many were new to their jobs but they worked very hard to make the trip pleasant. Overall our party of 4 were very pleased with the staff, most of whom were either from the Phillipines or China. All of the new staff were very friendly and seemed to enjoy the interaction between the cultures. Most of the Chinese were young and very friendly and very polite and eager to please. Shipboard experience was great! This was our fourth Viking cruise and first on their small ships. The only advice that we four travelers can give is DO NOT USE THE VIKING AIR SERVICES -- BOOK YOUR OWN FLIGHTS. We have used the Viking air services twice now but never again will we be so stupid. The first time we were forgiving and just wrote it off as a one time bad experience, but now that we used them twice, Viking proved to be totally a bunch of idiots. They choose bad schedules, bad airlines, and have zero flexibility of choosing good seats or getting upgrades. Houston to Toronto was on a small jet, and Toronto to Athens was miserable on Air Canada with no movies whatsoever, poor service, crappy food. Can you imagine 9 hours on a boring flight with no movies; we have been to Europe many times and never experienced no entertainment to pass the time. And, our party of four was booked on different flights with differing schedules as well. Overall a bad experience both leaving and returning to Houston -- NEVER AGAIN. Read Less

An unexpected maiden voyage of this beautiful ship. While many joked that it had a new car smell, we would have appreciated knowing in advance that we were the guinea pigs. That said, there were very few teething problems, and the ship operated smoothly. In particular, the universally pleasant, cheerful, helpful, and polite staff were a cut above other ships. They made a big difference in our day. The cruise went from Venice to Athens. We spent a few days in each outside the cruise. The ship was expected to be a recharging interlude, but the ports and tours were so good that we were kept hopping every day. Embarkation at both ends was a breeze, with many staff pointing out the direction to go in a potentially confusing port. Our junior suite was well laid out, with a balcony that actually allowed you to move around and stretch a bit. It included laundry service and a well stocked mini bar. Room service was excellent. We had breakfast sent up most days. The food won't win any awards, but it is certainly adequate. It's a smaller ship, so there's a buffet and two upscale restaurants. One focused on Nordic food, which didn't appeal, leaving only the other Italian style option. There's also a grill at the pool, and small bistro in the explorers lounge. The buffet is adequate, but choices are limited. The lineup for the gelato bar in the desert section is a tip off that the rest of the selection isn't much. There’s a magnificent Nordic spa area with huge bubble pool, saunas, steam room, cold plunge pool, a cold bucket splash and snow room. Alas the large bubble pool broke the first day and didn’t get fixed until the last. A major disappointment as it figured in our decision to take this ship. The steam room needs more light. It’s dark to the point of unsafe. I wish the saunas weren’t on timers during opening hours, as you sometimes have to wait a while for them to heat up. The gym is very well equipped. The hot tub jets in both the main and infinity pools were often broken, but the heat did work. There’s a broad range range of books throughout the ship. The public areas are surprisingly peaceful, with the explorers lounge having a two level view forward. Bars are never far away, and wait staff are attentive. Liquor and wine prices were very reasonable, and often included. Entertainment was low key. A classical trio, pianist, and a string player are the mainstays. No rock bands into the wee hours here. The included shore excursions were excellent. We took 3 which all had a bus and walking tour in groups of around 25 people for 2-3 hours. The optional excursions were equally good. We took two, and the Kotor trip through the mountains is not to be missed. While not Viking's fault, a couple of ports were swamped with people. Kotor is a small town, and 4 cruise ships dumped 5,000+ people into it. We escaped via an optional tour, but even when we returned some hours later, our guide could hardly get us around the town. Corfu wasn't much better. Oh, and don’t miss afternoon tea. It sounds quaint, but is well done. Read Less
