I have been on several Viking River Cruises and have always found the staffs to be very warm, welcoming and inviting. The Viking Sun was no different. The entire staff went out of their way to make our voyage one of the most exciting of a lifetime. Viking does it right! My husband and I were on the Viking Sun World Cruise for 4 months. Between the interesting ports of call, enrichment lectures, shore excursions and the dining options, I can honestly say that we never got bored. I can't say enough about the staff. They would go above and beyond to get you whatever you asked. Everyone on the staff was accessible, from the captain on down. In four months of dining aboard ship I can honestly say that I never walked away from a meal feeling disappointed. While we are not planning any further cruises in the near-term, you can be sure Viking will be the one we contact when we're ready to cruise again. Read Less

This trip covered all that we wanted to see in one voyage the excellent weather we experienced was the icing on the cake. The exceptional service on board was the cherry on top. The size of the ship was a bit larger than we are used to but it ensured pleanty of room to not feel crowded. In port it was never a hassle with crowds to depart or return. The entertainment was "Broadway good". The food at the Chefs Table was our favorite with no problem making reservations for it whenever we wanted. I wish I was wealthy enough to do a Viking Cruise every year. That said, we have booked our next one for next year. We are spending our kids inheritance! Worth every penny for these experiences> There is no better way to travel. Our only issue was not enough time in each destination given the length of land transportation to and from the ship in port. This cruise aboard the Viking Sun (930 guests) included overnight stays in Greenwich, England and Bergen, Norway. This allowed more time to explore these iconic cities of London & Bergen, as well as must-see destinations on the British Isles itinerary of Dover, Dublin, Holyhead Wales, Liverpool, Belfast, Ullapool The Highlands, Orkney Islands, Edinburgh (capital), Invergordon The Highlands, & the Shetland Islands. Each port had an included shore excursion led by a knowledgeable local guide. Our embarkation in Greenwich, England around lunchtime was a tender and went smoothly and the disembarkation in Bergen, Norway at 9:15am was also very organized. Free shuttles are provided in every port. The meals onboard the ship included regional specialties with beer, wine and soft drinks included with lunch and dinner. We also ate in the alternative specialty restaurants onboard, Manfredi's and Chef's Table, and enjoyed these exceptional menus. The mussels and ribeye steak in Manfredi's were delicious. The "Xiang" menu at Chef's table is outstanding in our opinion. We also did the 4pm afternoon tea one afternoon in the Wintergarden and couldn't believe how nice it was. As for entertainment, it was tastefully provided - we enjoyed the comedian (Rikki Jay) and singers (Helen Wilding) very much. The Viking Classical Trio from Serbia was relaxing to listen to in the Atrium and Explorer's lounge. The Viking Sun is an elegant ship throughout and the service onboard is impeccable. We are happy that there is no casino, formal night, or children onboard. All staterooms have a private veranda and include king-size bedding, large showers, LCD TVs, and 24-hour room service. We had room service for breakfast several times and it was great. We loved this cruise and have just booked "Into the Midnight Sun". The only recommendation I would make is to have the Spa open until 9pm instead of 8pm, and have a London Panoramic Tour or "hop on/ hop off tour. Read Less

Could use a bit of tweaking on the wines for sale The cabin we had which was a Jr Penthouse was roomy with the perfect appointed furniture. We had so much room to unpack. The bed is so comfy. It also came with early embarkation and early dining choices and tour choices Liked all the different bars around the ship. Could go to a new one almost every night The included tours were ok. The paid tours were more to our liking. The hikes were great, but you need to pay attention to the word: strenuous We had people come on bus and then couldn’t do the hike. My wife and I had taken a Viking River Cruise a couple of years ago and were excited to find that the company had gone into the sea cruising business. We were somewhat late in signing up for this cruise but found that the rear Explorer Suite was available. The reputation of Viking and our personal experience gave us great confidence that our money would be well spent. This proved to be true in nearly every segment of the cruise. Our early boarding was nicely done as our luggage arrived at our room in a very timely fashion. There was one problem which took time to resolve. The obligatory picture of each of us upon boarding for the first time apparently failed to register. We had to stand in a fairly long line to have that resolved which kept us from our room for about an extra hour. Once in however, we were made comfortable by our extraordinary Stewardess, Jackie. The Suite was beautiful and comfortable as I discuss in the box below. My wife had a hip problem that caused her to be uncomfortable in the two chairs provided in the room. We saw deeper chairs in the room next door and asked Jackie about exchanging one of ours for one similar to what we saw. Ten minutes later Jackie and her partner had the new chair set up and the other one gone. We were pleased to no end. This was just a sample of the extremely courteous, thoughtful service she provided throughout our voyage. The ship itself is the most beautiful and functional we have been on. Great care has been put into considering the comfort of the passengers and offering a different style of cruising from that of the competition. The dining experience was one of recognizing what was great and what was ordinary. I thought the seafood was outstanding and the beef dishes to be ordinary. This might be something to look to upgrading. The specialty restaurants were mixed, I felt.Manfredi's Restaurant was superb in both food and décor. The Chef's Table was okay except for the problem that causes the passengers to pick the date they want to be at that restaurant many weeks in advance without, as we found out, any knowledge of the style of food to be served at that sitting. We were fortunate to change our sitting to a different night when we found out that reindeer was not on our list of exciting food choices. I do suggest that something be done to allow passengers to have better information prior to making a choice on the Chef's Table. The port excursions were uniformly excellent. We loved them all. I particularly liked the trek across the headlands at Kirkwall in the Orkneys and Scara Brae. Our tour of Dublin afforded us the opportunity to see, hear and sing along with the best single day guide we have ever had. His name is Sam Ford and he is the best. Others were top notch as well. Needless to say, my wife and I will continue to patronize Viking Cruises both on the rivers and at sea. Our experience was the best ever and it is little wonder that the latest Travel and Leisure rates Viking Sea Cruises head and shoulders above the competition and with the highest rated ships of any size. Thank you for a most wonderful time aboard the Viking Sun. Read Less

This cruise was for 121 days and was Absolutely fantastic. Viking pulled out all the stops for this round the world. They added many extras like 24 hour room service, free laundry, and premium drink package. Everything was top notch. There was over 50 stops and each one was unique and interesting. The excursions were well planned and exceeded my expectations. Customer service was incredible. Every detail was thought about and taken care of. Although we visited many different countries all the customs procecedures were well taken of, eliminating any custom issues. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and professional and the tour buses very modern with airconditioning. The crew was superb and the Captain, cruise director, and general manager were spectactular. Even though we had over 900 passengers, the managers personally knew me and my background. The crew worked very well as a team with showed that management was very effective. The food, entertainment, and cultural presentations were first class. I cannot say enough on how good this cruise was! I would highly recommend Viking to all my friends. Read Less

Ship & crew were far & above expectations. Food was excellent @ beginning of cruise but average by the end, was to bland for my taste. Excursions were excellent, some countries guides were below average. The ports were good, some could have been skipped & more time spent @ other ports. No sports excursions such as golf, sporting events ( would have loved to go to cricket or rugby matches. No deep sea fishing. Viking could have gotten well over 30 people for these activities. The medical staff was excellent. Our room was great. Housekeeping was excellent WiFi was always an issue. Entertainment was good, lecturers were hit and miss, seemed to be overrun by UK lectures. If I’m in the Far East would liked to have had Far East lecturers not British etc. Also UK entertainment was to much, especially comedians., with most of the passengers US Or Canadian don’t get British humor But everything put together was well above my expectations. Viking offered their first world cruise that for us started in Los Angeles January 5, 2018 and ended in England on May 5, 2018. 4 months, 25 countries and 52 ports. I can't say enough how much the crew on Viking exceeded every expectation and provided customer service that was 5 star ++! You can not imaginine how efficient being on board ship allows you to make the most of your time, not only while at sea but also when at a port of call. Viking offers included tours at every port of call, along with many optional tours at each port. You can also go ashore in most countries and tour on your own. Most, not all ports, are very closet to if not right at city centers or you can take a taxi or "Tuk Tuk" to your desired destination. While on board Viking ships, 6 now in use and I believe another 8 or more under construction, there is so much offered that you can either choose to participate or not. We enjoyed the "Trivia" sessions where when at port for 1 hour you team up and play Trivia answering 15 questions and then a final team playoff. You not only learn a lot but get to meet so many new friends. The nightly entertainment was exceptional and changed as new top notch tallent came on board every few days. Most important is Viking's service. I expect a high level of service and my expection was exceeded time after time. Their staff from the Captain, first mate, Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, Chef and down to each employee treated you like family with smiles and chit-chat. We have already booked another cruise with Viking and are looking forward to seeing many old friends and can't wait for our next adventure on Viking. Don't wait or procrastinate, your own "Trip of a Life Time" is waiting for you...you won't regret it as you will have so many adventures and meet so many new friends to share your experience with on board Viking. Go see, experience new countries and share with your friends. Have lots of fun! Read Less

We have always enjoyed cruising with Viking. First with their river cruises and then Ocean cruise. We initially were skeptical about a 120 day ocean cruise but we were. very happy that we chose to take this cruise. I had some food allergy issues but the staff were very good to make sure my needs were accommodated. The staff of the ship were excellent. From the Barista who made us Capuchinos, to the bartenders and all the dining staff in the various restaurants. The Captain had a good sense of humour and kept us informed of what was going on. The Cruise Director was outstanding in all aspects and readily available to talk to anyone. The entertainment throughout the cruise was excellent. The enrichment lectures were very good for the most part. The shore excursions surprised as and were very good. Overall, no complaints at all. I would gladly recommend this cruise and Viking to anyone. Read Less

Viking has thought of everything to make this World Cruise the best of everything. The entertainment, excursions, enrichment, and food have all been exceptional. Viking has staffed this World Cruise with their best people in every department. Thus service is excellent. We have enjoyed cooking classes on days at sea. The enrichment program speakers have been very good and come from a variety of backgrounds including art history, government, retired military, and even a cookbook writer. Please note that this cruise is not for handicap or elderly people. The excursions require quite a bit of walking, climbing stairs, and stamina. No excursion is wheel chair, scooter, or walker friendly. Getting around the ship can be maneuvered easily when the seas are calm. We have encountered quite a few days of rough seas when even able bodied guests have struggled to stay on their feet. All in all our expectations have been more than met on this wonderful Viking Sun. We have traveled on several Viking River Cruises in Europe that are fantastic. Friends raved about a cruise in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas on the Viking Star. One look at the web shots of the Viking Sun convinced us to take the three-week cruise from Miami to Los Angeles. All of our expectations were exceeded. Transfer from the airport to the ship was efficient. Boarding took about 10 minutes and we met our friends who took the Viking Star cruise in the cafeteria. Food at all of the venues was terrific. There were even Chinese pork dumplings at breakfast. Manfredi's was especially scrumptious. Kudos for the lobster stir-fried noodles at 10 o'clock PM by the pool. The Scandinavian decor and accommodations on the entire ship were clean, sleek and comfortable. The Theatre was especially well-done. It was a perfect venue for he entertainment and lectures. The quality of the musicians, singers, magicians and lecturers was the best among the several cruise companies that we have used. The most impressive part of our experience was the friendliness of the staff from the cabin attendants to the captain. Some of the lecturers told us that they had never been welcomed as well or treated as well as they had on this cruise. They said that when the staff is treated well by the company it shows in the quality of their service for the passengers. We want to especially that our wonderful cruise director, who had a wonderful personality and a startlingly powerful mezzo suprano voice. Our staff guide on the trip to Havana was lovely and made the tour especially enjoyable. Later we learned that she was the captain's wife! Bus 49 forever! We meet terrific fellow passengers and were sad to leave half of them when we disembarked at Long Beach. However, we are enjoying their blogs during the rest of their round-the-world cruise. We've signed up for the Bergen to Iceland cruise on the Viking Star in 2019. Read Less

Embarkation in Miami was disorganized. Our luggage from the hotel was put on two different buses and the port employed porters would not load the luggage until a tip was paid for each bag. The ship was beautiful and at no time did it seem crowded. Lots of areas to relax in a quiet spot when that is what you wanted. The stateroom was nice and the room steward was excellent. The food and service in all of the dinning venues was excellent. The service in the Explorers Lounge was sometimes hit or miss. Most of the shore excursions were good, but the Quiet Vox should be used on all excursions both on the bus and during the walking portion of the tour. Some of the buses had PA systems that were not very useful. All of the tour guides should be full trained on how to setup and use the Quiet Vox as we had to show a couple of the tour guide how to sync the individual units to the tour guides system. We are definitely going again with Viking on the 2019 World Cruise. Read Less

This trip was everything and more that one would expect from Viking. It was our first ocean experience with them although we've done two Viking river cruises. From the time we arrived at the Port of Miami until we were loaded on buses for the LA airport, it was indeed the trip of a life time. This ship was simply spectacular! We were very hesitant to book an ocean cruise as the idea of a floating hotel of 2-3,000 passengers did not excite us. We were even skeptical of Vikings 930 passengers. That apprehension quickly disappeared, as we never felt like we had that many fellow cruisers. There are so many 'intimate' areas throughout the ship where people can read, chill out, play cards . . . We booked an Explorer suite and WOW, it was nothing short of amazing. The layout and amount of space was incredible. The dining options really appealed to us. We don't mind buffet style for breakfast and lunch but enjoy a traditional sit down with wait staff for dinner. It would be hard to chose between Manfredi's and The Chef's Table, as both offered fine dining with separate twists. The Chef's Table was SO intimate and we met the chef each time we dined there (6), which was quite special. Manfredi's offered a wonderful Italian style menu with beautiful wines - we enjoyed it almost a dozen times in our 23 day cruise. On board entertainment is not particularly important to us but we did attend about 6 evening performances, which were really quite good. Unfortunately we were looking forward to The Kitchen Table excursion but it was not available on this trip. Instead, cooking classes were offered on sea days and we attended 3. We had SUCH a good time. The classroom is state of the art and with only 8-10 participants, it's just a really interesting 3 hours. Most of the on-shore excursions were educational and interesting but there were a few duds - particularly Nicaragua. We also felt that we spent too much time in Cuba, and wish that one of the Cuba days would have been added to Costa Rica, Cabo or even Guatemala. Cienfuegos was a very disappointing first port of call. The primary reason for us booking this cruise was going through the Panama Canal and we were not disappointed. We were both very prepared for this part of our cruise, having both read the book "The Path Between the Seas." The excursion the day before cruising the canal was great as we got a local look at both sides of the canal and the actual experience of going through the locks, experiencing this enormous feat of mankind, was beyond superlatives. We enjoyed this cruise so much that on the second day, we booked the Alaska cruise for 2019 and booked the exact same room! If we could afford it, we would have booked several. Read Less

We had planned for this Viking inaugural round-the-world cruise two years earlier, but we decided to get married one week before our departure - so it became our extended honeymoon and what a memorable honeymoon it turned out to be. Before signing up for the cruise, we studied the countries and ports we will be visiting. We were very impressed with the ports that Viking has chosen since most of them were not the frequently picked by the usual crowd. We were also glad that Viking has taken the chore of obtaining all the necessary visas at no cost to us. The entire embarkation and disembarkation process was a breeze and we were the envy of the passengers of other cruise ships docking nearby. Everything was top notch, services such as dining, entertainment and excursions, to the ship and cabin. Viking has always been rated numero uno for their river cruises, but after launching world cruises three years ago, Viking has been rated numero uno already for 2016 and 2017 - very impressive. We chose Viking because we had cruised with them on the rivers of Europe. We chose the 141 day World Cruise so we could see the world. We were not disappointed on either goal. Many friends asked before the cruise if 141days was too much and we weren’t sure but now that it is done we could recommend it without reservation. The ship was brand new and a beautiful design, elegant but comfortable, plenty of places to find a quiet spot to read. There were bridge lessons and duplicate play which was a surprise. The entertainment was fantastic and quite varied. Food was outstanding. Viking doesn’t nickel and dime you with a lot of extra expenses. On such a long cruise we actually got to know the crew well and crew members actually left the ship before we did and the good bye ceremonies were great. Our Cruise Director, Heather Clancy, was the most amazing talent and amazing person. As we left the ship to come home at 4:45AM in London, she was there to say good bye and give us a hug, as were the other Officers. She also led our Christian Worship each week. The house Band was amazing and backed up a wide range of entertainers on the stage at night and performed afternoon concerts in the atrium. The whole 141 days was the trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We've always wanted to go on a world cruise (150 days) - and we had heard such wonderful things about Viking. Also, the Viking Sun was a new ship with modern electronics. The ship was a smaller one with less than 1000 passengers, which was great for us. All the appointments on the ship were clean, new and comfortable. A goodly number of dining venues was available and all were very good. The ship planned many, many daily activities just in case the shore excursions weren't enough. And at every port, there was always one included excursion. There were also a varied quantity of other excursions if you wanted to go in a different direction. The nice thing about the ship being smaller was that we rarely had to be tendered into port. Also, we visited ports that larger ships couldn't go to. Initially the Wi-Fi was too slow, but the management listened and arranged to have it augmented and sped up. Much happier after that. The en suite TV electronic system was marvelous. The service was wonderful and the crew always cheerful and attentive. Getting on and off this ship was much easier than the larger ships by far. Will definitely sail with Viking again. Read Less

I don’t think you could ever beat how terrific the crew was, it was like a family. And you were welcomed home after your day ashore. This was a World Cruise, we were gone for 141 days, it was sad to leave the ship. The way the ship was set up, public areas, it was like going into someone’s private living room or library. After dinner we were then taken to the Tropicana nightclub for a colorful, entertaining musical dancing show. It was also a time to interact with your fellow shipmates over the bottle of rum provided the 4 of you at the table. The Cuban bus tour guide had perfect English and was well educated and provided wonderful information about Cuba and the people in a delightful manner. Four months of traveling alone, both firsts for me (and for the Sun), along with eccentric eating practices, made me rather apprehensive as the embarkation date approached. Instead it was a glorious experience. The variety of the 50+ port excursions, my raison d'être, many ports one-dayers and/or new to Viking, not to mention the preparatory port talks, were well run, seldom a cattle-car experience. The World Cafe provided me with my best dining experience ever, for its variety and convenience. I'd done a short cruise on the sister Viking Star, and was as delighted as I expected to be with the cabin. The senior staff, especially the cruise director, were extraordinarily warm, energetic, and responsive to constructive feedback. Other high points were the duplicate bridge, trivia contests, and library contents. With respect to entertainment, I've never been charmed by stage shows or cocktail parties, but I was delighted to watch the Eagles' march to the Super Bowl during the first weeks crossing the Pacific. Though I'm quite happy by myself, the fellow travelers I met on excursions and shipboard activities were mostly good companions. Only persistent problem was temperature control in the public spaces -- not unexpected for a first cruise in the tropics which were mostly new to Viking. Value for money? Well, compared to the costs of my other travels, I expected this would be a one-off, but not so! Read Less

Because the cruise went to Cuba a place that neither my wife or I have been to before. The trip was very enjoyable. The overnight stay in Havana was a real pleasure. The hotel was great and the show at the Tropicana was really good. They took us from the hotel to the Tropicana in a older convertible which was nice. The food that was supplied was good also. They claimed that the hotel was a five star hotel and it probably was. The rest of the sight seeing was food also. The guide was well informed. He didn't leave much out if anything. This was my first sailing with Viking Ocean Cruises and very satisfied with the whole experience. Looking forward to booking another cruise with them. Everything was first class and the way we were treated on board the ship was great. Food was great and the buffet and the dining room was terrific. Read Less

We were on the December 1-8, 2017 cruise to Cuba on The Viking Sun. Very beautiful new ship with really nice public areas, pool, spa, and fitness center. Like the river cruises, Viking did an outstanding job with the Cuba tours with highlight being and included stay at a very nice Havana hotel and Tropicana Show. Cuban guides were excellent! Reason for giving Average score for Dining and Service: 1. Breakfast and lunch buffets were nice, but had some quirks. Only one side of the World Cafe had a salad bar and way too many desserts! 2. Wine service in the Restaurant was very poor because they only has 3 wine stewards, leaving only one for the Restaurant and the others for the specialty restaurants. Never did they announce what white or red wine they were pouring, nor did they offer a wine list. Once they lost a bottle of Chardonnay we had purchased, and after much to-do looking for it ending up just giving us a free bottle. The Head Waiter agreed with me about the poor service but said that upper management was not listening to his recommendations. Service was excellent in specialty restaurants. The Viking Band was excellent and really livened the place. Demographics of passengers were 60+ years in age and were retired college professor/ school teacher types, not saying their is anything wrong with that! Overall great cruise and beautiful new ship. Viking just needs to iron out some service issues in the Restaurant. Read Less
