This was our first experience with Viking Ocean Cruises. The ship was a perfect size, the staff was very accommodating, the food was delicious and plentiful. The included tours were all very good and well organized. We had no complaints with any aspect of the cruise. We were so pleased that we have booked a river cruise for next year and have been told that they are even better. We loved the fact that there were no passengers under 18. Viking does Ocean cruises like they were meant to be and used to be. Bigger ships does not mean better, in fact, just the opposite. You may pay more with Viking but it is worth it. Viking ships provide balconies with all their rooms, no inside cabins. Awesome setup. The bathroom floor was heated which is nice in the colder climates. We can’t wait to do another ocean cruise with Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and the cruise line. We have traveled on Viking River cruises but not their ocean line. We did the pre-extension in Iceland and then flew to Bergen, Norway to board the ship. The ship is beautiful. All of the crew were wonderful and helpful. Even though there were 900 guests on board, it was not crowded and just a fantastic experience. The cabin, which was a Verandah on the 6th floor, was perfectly planned. Lots of storage and easy to move around in. There were two, no reservation dining areas, and two reservation dining rooms. We chose to eat in the areas that did not require reservations. The staff was great and the food was plentiful and wonderful. We did a shore excursion in every port as we wanted to experience as much as we could. We truly enjoyed the ones out in the countryside versus the ones in the city. It was great that they offered excursions for folks with mobility issues as we met wonderful people that could not go on many of the excursions we went on but thoroughly enjoyed the simpler tours. We have enjoyed Viking River cruises and wanted to try out their new ship, Viking Sun. We truly loved our cabin, which was a Penthouse Suite. The ship was gorgeous with so many wonderful spaces, fabulous food and great, varied choices. good wine with meals, outstanding entertainment and we even enjoyed the excursions. The staff was simply amazing and we wanted for nothing. There was always a smile and a warm welcome. We will definitely take another Viking Ocean cruise. We thought that 14 nights would be too long. It was just perfect...We also loved the itinerary. The only negative is one of the excursions that we paid extra for was a huge disappointment. It was for bird watching and we were informed too late that all the sea birds were already gone at this time of year. Viking should have known that and informed us. That is our only complaint, other than the gym. IN a perfect world there would be a more varied schedule for classes other than 7:30am. A casino would be fun as well. Read Less

Unpacking once and being able to experience multiple ports of calls by simply stepping off the ship was wonderful. The food overall was delicious and we had many choices of cuisine and restaurants. . It was fun to taste the local cuisine at lunch and dinner in each port of call. The guides were so knowledgeable and having the Port talks and Q&As helped tremendously. It enabled the experience of the historical sites to be all we hoped they would be. The Cruise Director gave us little tops for each stop. My favorite spot Eidfjord,Norway, was beyond spectacular as we viewed it from our balcony at sunrise. It had been a life long dream to see the Fjords and it surpassed all of my expectations. The most wonderful part overall was the total relaxation on this beautiful luxurious ship. There was nothing you could want for, from the throw blankets everywhere to the popcorn and movies at night to be taken care of at every moment by a very efficient, friendly crew. Read Less

This was our fourth Viking Ocean Cruise which makes us a real Viking follower and supporter. As usual, the embarkation went smoothly with a Viking representative meeting us at the airport and providing transportation directly to our ship. On this particular cruise, we started in Bergen, Norway and did one of the included tours plus we went up to Mt. Floien. Both our ship and cabin were first class, very clean with outstanding facilities to make our trip that much rewarding. One of the perks of sailing with Viking is the first class dining onboard that makes you feel that you are at a Michelin star restaurant. In addition to the main restaurant, you have two specialty restaurants in Manfredi’s and the Chef’s Table. Both serve amazing food and first class service along with a pretty good selection of wines. Besides Bergen, we stopped at different ports in Ireland, England and Scotland. The included tours and excursion obviously are first class but we did book some optional excursions that were both intriguing and interesting. Viking has a variety of entertainment including visiting speakers and musicians. The Viking entertainment group performed several different dance and singing routines that I thought were excellent. Overall, Viking provides a wonderful travel experience from start to finish. They are well organized and as a traveler, everything is provided so that you can just sit back and relax. From start to finish, the crew and staff can’t do enough for you so that the only thing you have to do is be grateful that you have so many memories. Read Less

We've sailed on Viking River cruises and found them to be first rate, so we were eager to sail on their British Isles Ocean Cruise. We have traveled on other ocean cruise lines and have been disappointed in many aspects. Viking does not disappoint! The attractiveness and cleanliness of the Viking Sun was amazing. The Sun had the most comfortable stateroom ever, with a veranda, ample closet and drawer space...and that bathroom with the heated floor! Many cruise ships have redundant menus and not a lot of dining options. So many choices were available and we booked the specialty restaurants a few nights. We also enjoyed the seafood buffet on several occasions. The menus were varied and wine or beer was served at each meal. The menus included some of the local flavors of the areas we visited...and that's an important part of traveling to us. I also have to say that we also took advantage of breakfast in bed on more than one morning! I have to mention ... all of this at no additional cost! Other cruise lines "nickle and dime" continuously. Unfortunately we weren't able to partake of all the activities offered on board...there were so many, we didn't have enough time to do them all! The entertainment was more than outstanding and we look forward to the performances of the talented performers every night. One of the most outstanding features of this cruise was the service. I commend whomever does the hiring and training of the staff. Everyone we encountered was genuinely friendly and eager to serve, in a comfortable, relaxed way...no stuffiness! We were always addressed by our names, we felt like valued guests. The port excursions were terrific. The guides were so informative and we appreciated the local perspective and personal stories they shared. It was nice to have included excursions in each port and well as more in-depth tours available to book. We were so delighted with our experience on the Viking Sun, that while on board we booked an Alaskan Cruise! **Warning** They book up fast, we couldn't get on til 2020! I truly have to say that our first choice will always be Viking for any future cruises! Read Less

Sun is the most beautiful ship. Decorated in luxurious Scandinavian style, she absorbs people well. The cabins are nice, with a seating area and a small balcony (deluxe veranda level). Service is great, as is the food, generally, although it is sometimes difficult to get a table at dinner, especially when they have two shows on the same night. The included excursions are usually basic orientation coach or walking tours. The optional excursions are pricy, but the Flåm railway was amazing!. You can buy a drinks package which gives you all your drinks rather than the rather basic quality wines (also beer and soft drinks) with lunch and dinner. Bar prices are steep and subject to a service charge. We did the Viking Homelands cruise which covered the Baltic and some Norwegian Fjords. The day in Berlin (from Warnemünde) was not enjoyable. We were put on a scruffy old "ersatz" train for over two hours in each direction. No Aircon so you had to open the windows and the noise was terrible. Then a coach tour (sit on the right or you'll see nothing). They dropped us in Gendarmenplatz which was a long way from anywhere. Tourist attractions are mostly museums. When we got back, because we were the last people off the train (due to our carriage not actually stopping next to the platform) and being rather slow walkers, we were right at the back of a queue of some 700 people. It took nearly an hour to get everyone on board, by which time it was after 9pm and all the restaurants were full. This was pure bad organisation on the part of Viking, who made no concession to the large number of slow walkers - these guests could easily have been put in carriages nearer the other end of the train, minimising the walking distance. Unlike on the river cruises, there are no slow walking tours. I'm not sure why, when most of the tours have multiple groups. Read Less

Loved the itinerary. Viking Sun is a beautiful new ship with fabulous service, food, and included excursions. We loved the fact that there were fewer passengers. It wasn’t a cattle car that other larger cruise lines have. We loved not having young children running down the hallways like other cruise lines. No children under 18 are allowed. Highlights were the optional excursions- St Petersburg Ballet. And Norway’s Flam Railway. We loved the fact that everything is included. Such as fine wines and beers for lunch and dinner. Other cruise lines charge per soda, water bottle, glass of wine or beer. The staff are super hard workers who are very nice and friendly. The spa was beautiful and it was such a wonderful experience to treat myself to a massage and facial. Our cabin was super clean, quiet, and comfortable. We loved the heated bathroom floor. I look forward to taking another Viking Ocean cruise. Read Less

Our first Viking Cruise, we were drawn mostly to the Viking Homelands itinerary as these were some of the places we most wanted to visit. The included excursions were good, providing very good general background and historical, and geographical, perspective. They can be very crowded as many groups seem to run together. The purchased excursions helped avoid crowds and provided more interesting information. The ship, however, is magnificent! It provided highest level of luxury and service, quality food in abundance and world class entertainment, all of which exceeded our expectations. Although the specialty restaurants were nice, I really enjoyed the rib eye steak at Manfredi's, The World Cafe on Deck 7 is outstanding. I think I ate fresh crab legs every day! Everything is fresh and they will even cook to order. Best of all, they offer twenty four hour room service as good or better than in any hotel. Be sure to go early to secure a good seat at the shows in the comfortable theater. They are highly enjoyable. I give this Viking Ocean Cruise a rating higher than 5! Read Less

I chose this cruise because there were many different ports and countries - and it included places we have never been like St. Petersburg, Tallinn, Helsinki, Berlin, Gdansk. The service was OVER the top! Everyone went out of their way to make our cruise memorable. And although I was worried about seasickness in the Baltic, the sailing was perfect. Our cabin was much larger than we have had on other cruises and very comfortable. The ship was just immaculate as well. The many dining options offered so much variety - and the specialty restaurants do not incur an additional charge for a real gourmet treat! There were always things to do as well - use of the spa facility also did not carry an additional charge, and we loved the experience of "Nordic bathing." There were many enrichment lectures, activities, and fabulous entertainment that rivaled anything we have seen on Broadway! Read Less

We chose this cruise after taking a lovely and memorable river cruise with Viking. We had wanted to visit the Baltic countries on this itinerary. We were taken care of from the time we arrived in Stockholm until we checked into the airport in Bergen. The cruise on the Baltic was as smooth as the river cruise. This surprised us, as we had been on a previous Caribbean cruise (not a Viking cruise) that was quite rocky. The Sun and it’s crew was spectacular! The ship design and artwork were stunning and the cleanliness impeccable. The staff, to a person, was positive, professional and personable. The hiring, training and quality assurance of personnel is top notch. The staff were a team that handled themselves with a high level of friendly decorum. We ate our lunches on the Aquavit and found the food options to be plentiful and delicious. I loved the salad and salmon choices and my husband loved the meat, pizza and pasta selections. The freshness and taste of the food did not fail to delight. We often frequented the sushi bar as appetizers with early evening cocktails- heavenly! The choices for dinner in the Restaurant were plentiful and delicious. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Chef’s Table (paired wines with each course) and Manfredi’s (Italian perfection). The many areas of the ship made the ambiance relaxing and personal. We enjoyed both the infinity pool and outdoor seating on warm days and the enclosed pool area on cool days. We loved the coffee/espresso/ cappuccino machine availability 24/7. Yes, I am a coffee fanatic! We enjoyed evening cocktails in Mamsen’s- beautiful live music and ocean views. Our stateroom was lovely. It was cleaned twice daily -when we left in the a.m. and at turndown while we were at dinner. The bathroom was spacious with drawer space for personal items. The bedroom had ample plugs for phone/iPad charging and two barrel chairs for sitting. The private balcony with table and chairs was sweet for watching the world go by. My only minor comment is that the drawer space was very shallow and hanging space limited for 2 people. Truth: I bring a lot of clothes. I appreciate the fact that there are washers and dryers and irons/ironing boards on each floor with detergent -included without extra charge. I have never felt so wonderfully indulged as I did on this cruise. Yes, we booked our next Viking Ocean cruise before we left the Sun! Read Less

We chose this Viking cruise after our wonderful Viking river cruise last year. We wanted to try an ocean cruise and the Baltic looked like the perfect opportunity. The cabins were spacious, with everyone having a veranda. Dining was diverse and excellent. The dining room staff was amazing and it was nice having multiple wine stewards. Evening entertainment was top notch and definitely worth our time. The port excursions were about the right length. No children are allowed on Viking. What makes Viking special is the treatment from the time your plane lands until you are actually heading through security on your way home. The 3 day pre-trip in Iceland was amazing. Having local guides at each port is a plus as most are very entertaining and have great local stories, some of which are probably true. Also, the stop in Eidfjord, Norway was just gorgeous, with us having the time to take a leisurely walk in the country. We have already booked our next two Viking cruises, one river and one ocean. The ship was fantastic. Every meal, regardless of venue was excellent as was the service throughout. The ship (Viking Sun), one of the newer, modern designs in the Viking fleet is a perfect size. 930 passengers, never a wait or long line for any restaurant, meal or activity. Everything was extremely well organized from the first contact when booking through the weather related flight disruptions and throughout the entire trip. The only minor negative was the Berlin port call, should not be on a Sunday, nothing was open except restaurants. It is also a VERY long day. Having said that, the sights and monuments were well worth the effort. Highly recommend the pool area in the fitness center to relax tired muscles after a good tour day followed by a good book and "refreshments" on glass enclosed forward observation lounge. Every port of call included an excellent, professionally programed tour. An especially nice added tour was the Ballet in St Petersburg. We have and will continue to recommend Viking to friends and family. Read Less

The VIking Sun is a fine ship. However, there were several areas where the service and amenities were poor. Dining -- The service at the main Restaurant was terrible. It was difficult to get a table when we wanted it, and because our one experience was so terrible,we only ate there once on the entire trip. We were led past an available table by the window and seated at an interior table for no apparent reason. The wait staff pretty much ignored us when we asked for things like missing silverware and refills of water and butter, When they did bring tour food, the service was rushed and very impersonal. -- The Chef;s Table restaurant was far too pretentious with a waiter reading the menu to us (It seemed she had no other function) and with tiny portions. We had to ask several times to get our wine glasses refilled and then the waiter filled only about 1/10 of the glass. -- By contrast, Manfredi's was excellent - both food and service. -- We ate almost all of our meals at the World Cafe as the default option. Food and selection were good, but of course it is self service with the result that our dining experience was far inferior to those of our previous Viking cruises where we got to know the wait staff and they got to know us and cater to our specific tastes. Excursions -- The guides varied considerably in quality from the high point, the Communist Flashback in Tallinn, Estonia, to the low point, the guide in Copenhagen sho spent most of his tour telling us how he hated tourists (we left the tour in the middke and continued on our own). Our first Viking cruise was on the Danube River. It was great, so we decided to try the Ocean cruise. Good decision. The Viking Sun is a beautiful ship. We did the Homeland tour around the Baltic Sea, visitng many beautiful cities. If you like historic old towns, cobblestone streets, and beautiful mountains this is a great itinerary . Our cabin had plenty of space. The heated bathroom floor was nice. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly every day, even when large numbers of people returned from a tour. Dining was a pleasure. The service was very good. If you don't take the special spirits package, you can still ask for a different wine. Usually they offer a house white or red, but I prefer a rose and was given it when I asked. The food was excellent. The World Cafe had excellent selections as a buffet. We were able to make 2 resevations for the Chef's Table and Manfridi's the first day on board in addition to the one we made prior to boarding. We enjoyed the entertainment in the Theather. Port talks were helpful, but you can also watch them on the TV. The music shows were very enjoyable. We enjoyed all the tours but a highlight was the Home visit in Stavanger. It was great to visit with a local. We almost did not get to do it. Only 10 people go, one morning & one afternoon visit. Our afternoon visit was cancelled because not enough people booked it. They told us we could go to the meeting spot for the morning group and if someone did not show up we could go, Got very luckly that 2 people did not show up and we were added to the group. They will also wait list you if it is a few days in advance and someone cancels. So don't give up if there is a tour you really want. I would aslo recommed the Flam train tour in Norway. A long day but worth it for the beautiful views. Read Less

We were looking for a special trip to celebrate our 50th anniversary. This cruise exceeded our expectations. We've cruised a number of times before but have never experienced the quality provided by Viking. One of the main selling points for this cruise was the small size of the ship, only 930 passengers. After cruising on ships that carried as many as 3,600 passengers, the small ship experience was great. Another feature we liked was the fact that a complimentary shore excursion was included at each port. Optional excursions were available at extra cost, but we found that other than the two-day excursion in St. Petersburg which we paid for, most of the included excursions met our needs. The guides for the excursions were some of the best we've experienced. While the cost of a Viking cruise is higher than many other cruise lines with similar itineraries, the amenities that are included such as the free shore excursions, the free beer or wine with lunch and dinner, the no extra cover charge for the outstanding alternative restaurants, the free mini bar stocked with sodas and snacks daily, complimentary Wi-Fi, make the cost difference minimal. The quality and variety of the food in all of the restaurants including the buffet was exceptional. The port talks where you actually learn about the port, not just the place to get the best deal on diamonds or tanzanite, were a welcome change from previous cruises we've taken. All cabins on a Viking Cruise are veranda cabins. There are no interior rooms. This cruise was without a doubt the best cruise we've ever taken. I would highly recommend the Viking Cruise experience. After a disappointing cruise with Celebrity in 2014, we vowed we wouldn’t cruise again in a hurry. Our faith in cruising has now been restored again thanks to Viking Sun! We embarked on the Viking Homelands cruise with friends in Stockholm for 14 nights. The embarkation process was a breeze & the staff very welcoming & friendly. Viking Sun is a very stylish ship. The Scandi styling throughout is very timeless, elegant & appointed with beautiful artworks. Our penthouse veranda room was very comfortable indeed & we enjoyed a fully stocked bar fridge which was topped up daily. We also enjoyed having access to laundry facilities on each deck with detergent included. The entertainment was fantastic...an energetic young & talented group who performed in the main theatre & a trio of musicians who performed throughout the ship on a daily basis. The cruise director Bevan was also a very talented performer & was very high profile in all facets of his role which was great. We enjoyed dining in all the restaurants. We particularly enjoyed The Restaurant, Manfredis & the Chefs Table. All of the food & beverages were of a very high quality & the staff were fantastic with impeccable service. There are some beautiful public areas on this ship, namely the Wintergarten, The Explorers Lounge, the Spa & around the main pool. I particularly enjoyed a Nordic Spa Experience one evening in which a group was shown the correct way to use the sauna & snow grotto onboard ...it was so envigorating! We did the included Viking shore excursions at most ports which we found to be a great introduction to each port destination. We did two paid excursions...the 2 day Ultimate St Petersburg & Lübeck & Wismar. These were fantastic excursions with amazing meals & guides, we were very well looked after. On previous cruises we have tired of continually being touted to spend more money in specialty restaurants & beverage packages etc. Cruising with Viking is a truly relaxing experience & it’s great that all is prepaid beforehand. There are no gimmicks on board, namely casinos & art auctions. It’s no wonder Viking is so highly rated...we found this cruise to be faultless. In our opinion they’re a hard act to beat! I am a former travel agent whom specialized in cruises, so needless to say I expect excellent service, and I am not one to write reviews unless I feel that the service was either exceptional, or horrible. We travel quite often, mostly cruises, and for as many as we have been on, we have not found a cruise line that we have found fantastic enough for us to book our next cruise before we leave the ship, until NOW. As long as Viking keeps it's current cruise model we will be Viking loyal, and have already booked our next Italy cruise on board, prior to finishing the Homeland cruise The following will explain why: As for this cruise, every aspect was absolutely EXCEPTIONAL. We chose Viking because we were looking to find a cruise line that treated clientele as years past. We have been on SEVERAL cruises, with other lines, and have found that service, food, accommodations were lacking. I go on a cruise to "Escape" everyday life. Viking does this right. The food was excellent, the staff friendly, helpful and could not be more accommodating. Embarkation was a breeze. Our plane was delayed by 5 hours, which put us in a stressed out mood, also thinking we would miss most of our time in Stockholm. When we arrived at the Ship, we were greeted by an extremely friendly staff, handed our room keys, (which had been ready and waiting for us), there was no long line to wait on, and we quickly made our way to the ship, where we were greeted again, this time with Mimosas and champagne. With such an efficient embarkation, our stress melted away, and we were headed out to explore Stockholm, with plenty of time to see everything we needed to see. This is just a small example of the service you get with Viking. I can tell you that the staff, from the waiters straight to the Senior Officers were always ready to greet the passengers (BY NAME). This type of interaction has you feel as if you are their priority (and you are, everyone of the passengers). The dedication to detail is paramount. When you are in the theatre, there are blankets on the seats in the event you may be cold. This was also in the Mamsens lounge. If you want to watch an outside movie, there is popcorn waiting at your seat, and headphones, which allow anyone to be enjoying the outside area, whether or not you want to see the movie. By the poolside there are towels on each of the chairs, and even on sea days you can get a comfortable seat, no overcrowding or fighting for space. On your way to your excursions you are handed bottles of water (this is all no additional charge, it is important to note Viking DOES NOT nickle and dime its clientele) , there are umbrellas in your cabin, as well as a well stocked minibar, which gets restocked daily (No charge, but depending on cabin level will depend on what is in your bar. I was in a DV5 category, we had sodas and snacks). Beer and wine are plentiful at lunch and dinner. Viking has the best port talks I've seen. What I truly found helpful is that at their port talks, they use Google Maps, so that you can actually see where you will be traveling to in respect to the country, and where you are docked with the ship. For me, it gave me a better understanding of the travel time and what area of the country I was visiting. As far as the excursions, Viking makes sure that you get where you are going to with ease. Representatives are stationed throughout areas to make sure you get to the proper transportation. Disembarkation was just as seamless as embarkation. I booked a taxi to take us to the train station in Bergen. From previous experience I made sure that we left the ship in plenty of time to make our taxi. Well..... we put our luggage out the night before,- nothing new, next morning got up very early and made our way to disembark per our instructions. No long lines! We made our way down the gangplank, again Viking staff staged to help direct, when we got to where the bags were, a Viking staff member asked us our cabin number, then proceeded to walked us to our bags, which were all together. This was so quick and efficient, that we had an hour to wait for our taxi :). I could go on and on, but I will stop here. It would be easier to answer anyone's direct questions about the actual PORTS or Ship, because if I continued this would be a novel :). So please ask questions! Read Less

1) Norway was simply fabulous, breathtaking natural beauty! Estonia caught us off guard with its history and Tallin is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. The Old Town sections were fascinating. We participated in all the included excursions and found them to be interesting and well organized. We purchased the Peterhoff Palace & Gardens tour for the 2nd day in St. Petersburg and were very impressed with whole excursion. We felt most of the tour guides were top notch and did a great job keeping track of everyone. 2) For us, the Welcome Show with the fantastic singers/dancers gave us a warm friendly feeling. The Norwegian song, "Welcome Home" was very touching. The Captain's and selected crew members welcome was the best we've ever attended. It all seemed to set the stage for a wonderful cruise. 3) We really don't know of any criticisms of the ship. The ship is so beautiful and easy to navigate. We loved the smaller number of passengers onboard, it rarely felt crowded. We tried to enjoy the tapestries with explanations and artwork (Viking Art guide app). We visited all 3 pools, the spa, sauna, steam, snow grotto. We listened to all the talented musicians on board and attended quite a few of the theater shows. We listened to several of the informative speakers, port talks and viewed the speciality movies, like the documentary series about the Vikings. Things we missed: the afternoon tea, only because we were busy or too full to try it. The outdoor movie looked interesting and well set up but we selected other entertainment. 4) The food was outstanding in all 4 dining areas. The main restuarant was excellent and easily matched the speciality dining for quality. Of the 2 speciality dining options, we preferred Manfredi's over the the Chef's Table but it really is a matter of personal tastes. Even the World Cafe buffet style was tasty with large windows for enjoyable scenery. Of course, all the staff was incredible! 5) The Viking ship can't be beat and the itinerary was fabulous. As with most cruises you seem to get a sampling of each port and some cities begged for time to spent in them. But we were able to experience so much in 15 days so I wouldn't change anything. Recommendation: GO, don't wait to have a memorable journey! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience Scandinavia and the other Baltic countries: Visiting the cities and countryside, enjoying local foods and spirits, understanding the culture and history, etc. Mission accomplished! The included excursions were insightful and hit the high spots. The train trip to Berlin, although long, helped us touch down in the past international events such as the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, etc. And the tour guides were knowledgeable but also personable enough to add human dimension to facts. For instance, our guide to Berlin talked about his family being stuck in East Berlin after WWII, what that meant re communicating with family in the West, etc. But even more, the cruise itself was outstanding. The ship is beautiful! The officers and support staff were friendly, capable and eager to make our trip special. The food was exceptional, from The Restaurant and World Cafe to the Chef's Table and Manfridi's to afternoon tea. Our cabin was extremely comfortable and spacious enough that we could relax between outings, meals, port briefings and enjoying friends we met onboard. And the entertainment by the singers/dancers was some of the best we've had at sea with any cruise line. All in all, this was such a perfect trip that we (and many others) signed up for another cruise while onboard. Can't wait! Read Less

The ship was great. The crew was wonderful. It was a very busy cruise with many wonderful ports to explore. The food was good and entertainment very enjoyable. Do your own laundry service available as well. The pool areas were very nice and service outside was great. Food and dining options were just right and no extra charge for specialty restaurants. The ship had many nice areas in which to relax. The afternoon tea was lovely accompanied by a beautiful selection of sandwiches and sweets. There was a very nice spa and gym. Ship also had a sports deck and walking/running track. The staff did an incredible job getting 650 passengers off and onto a train to Berlin and returning. We were always greeted by staff upon return to ship. Water was always provided when leaving the ship for excursions. Very organized exit to excursions. The only thing I would change is the included excursions had too much bus time and not enough stops for walking about or picture taking. Cruise was wonderful. Read Less

It was a while since I had been to Sweden and Denmark, and my wife had never been. The trip was a perfect way to get a taste of many Baltic countries...and St. Petersburg, Russia. The weather was warm; not a day did it rain. Our accommodations and service was sensational, and the food was so good aboard ship, we chose to eat on board at every opportunity. The staff, from the Captain to those that took special care of our room and us, could not have been finer. They made you feel special. They went out of their way to do the little things that you remember most. The trip was five stars all the way. Our last two cruises were with Viking. We have already reserved for another trip next year and much to our joy, have learned many of the crew on this ship will be sailing with us from Rome to Barcelona. That will make us feel more like it is home, once again. I don't think we will sail on any other line. Read Less

Viking cruise line lived up their reputation as being extremely fabulous!! Great ambiance! Great staff- so eager to please! Wonderful food! Informative tours! Viking does it right!!!! We took advantage of every included excursion! It would have been nice if they were more than just a couple stops for photo ops though! We especially enjoyed many of the waiters in The Restaurant! They were so polite and eager to please! The food was very good and menu selections were very adequate!! We loved Manfredi’s and the Italian restaurant! Nice to have variety! The ship was very beautiful! It was kept impeccably clean by the very hard working cleaning staff! Our room steward was so friendly and always considerate and polite! We so enjoyed our first ocean cruise and have booked two more! We have and will continue to recommend the Viking cruise line the family and friends! It is a pricey cruise line but so much is included- which helps!! Giving sizable price breaks/incentives to repeat customers would be very appreciated! We flew SAS- as arranged by Viking! NEVER AGAIN!! Horrible flight home!!! They lost our luggage for 6 days!!! Many we spoke with shared our concerns! They agreed and advised - avoid SAS!!!!! Read Less

So here is a (long) review of the Viking Sun Homelands cruise we just finished this week. I tried to break it all down as best I could. I would highly recommend anyone who would like this amazing experience to book it! Final views of Viking Homelands Cruise 1- We are aware that our joy about this holiday is influenced by the wonderful and unusual weather we experienced for the entire 32 days in Europe (except misty in Iceland and 50 F) (we spent 10 days in the U.K. with family). The temps were mid 70’s to high 80’s the whole time, with only one 5 minute rain shower in Stockholm. 2- Viking Sun. The ship is amazing. It is well laid out, and well decorated. The hard working staff is always cleaning and polishing. We enjoyed the pianist Olga, the string group, and Luis the guitarist being in different lounges each evening. The nightclub was fun each night and a great place to wind down. Iskra was the bartender who kept up with us- we had Silver Spirits drink package and it was nice to be able to experience different drinks whenever. (Rule of thumb- if you drink 2-3 liquor or upgraded wines per day, it is $$ worthwhile). 3- Stateroom. We had a Penthouse Veranda room- perfect size, lots of storage and drawers. Our cabin steward Fery and his assistant Jayson kept up with our every need. 4- Entertainment. We were very impressed with the quality of the evening entertainment. The cruise director, Bevin, and his assistant Matthew were everywhere! From morning excursions to port talks to evenings, they were always on point for what passengers needed. The entertainment in the theater included a magician, a comedian, and a singer that has played Jean Valjean in Les Mis in West End, so you know he is a powerful talent. The resident production team consisted of 4 highly talented and energetic performers who rocked the theater with a 69’s show, a musicals themed show and a Beatles/ABBA show (we WERE in Stockholm). They were also consistently visible and great ambassadors for the ship. There were other activities during the days and evenings- history and art lectures, team trivia, dance lessons, and more. 4- Food. We ate mostly at the World Cafe buffet- always great choices- sushi, crab legs, shrimp, Prime rib, mussels, tenderloin, oysters, whatever. The menus were posted on the online app so you could make your decision. We ate at the main restaurant a few times, the pool grill a few times, and Manfredi’s, the Italian specialty place once. It was fantastic. We didn’t get to the Chefs Table, the specialty restaurant with a set menu that changes every 2 or 3 days- the day we had reservations, Dennis wasn’t feeling very well- he caught a cold and was not up to it. 5- Shore excursions. We took mostly the included Viking and they were so well organized. Every stop had a free walking or bus tour, plus shuttles included if needed to get into and out of town. One of the best was the Berlin included- we thought we would be dumped on a train, dumped in Berlin, and then find our way back to the train on our own. Instead, the train was chartered and we had a local guy with us the whole time. When we got to Berlin, we were given an orientation bus tour for an hour before we were let off at a central square to wander on our own. After 2 hours or so, we met back at the square, and were bussed to the train. On the train back, we were served wine, beer and snacks, complimentary. It was much more than we expected for the free inclusion. We took 2 of the Viking paid excursions- Pulpit Rock and the Flam railroad. I would recommend both of those. We did a 2 day highlights tour with SPB tours in St Petersburg, which also gave us an evening out with “Go Out Like a Local”- we went to some trendy bars with a 30 something guide and then took an evening canal cruise- private boat- just 5 of us plus our guide, Russian rock music and a bottle of vodka. Skol! 6- a bit about each stop -Iceland. We did the pre-extension but Viking had us in a hotel too far from town. The Golden Circle was remarkable, with the plate tectonics going on, and the volcanic landscapes got the science geology nerd in me all happy. The Blue Lagoon was quite an experience as well -Bergen. Norway was on my bucket list and I understand why. The scenery all through Norway is breathtaking. Take the funicular up to the top of the mountain for great views. -Other 2 stops in Norway. Eidfjord has the Flam railroad which goes up and around the mountains and waterfalls. At Stavanger, we took the small boat out to look straight up those glacially formed cliffs. -Aalborg was just a few hours but another quaint medieval town. Copenhagen was a bit bigger and we took the walking tour and then a canal cruise. -Talinn Estonia- the history of that region is tough. The economy is struggling because of trade problems -Berlin- train and a chance to experience the history of a crazy man and his demented dreams and then how the Cold War took a toll on those in east Berlin. -Gdansk Poland. Another chunk of history. The ship was berthed at the spot where WW2 began. Sobering. Take a look at the Polish amber- it’s very beautiful -St Petersburg- this was actually my least favorite place, but a visit I wouldn’t have changed for anything. This is a huge city, crazy traffic, so many tourists, so much standing in line to get into all the important spots- Hermitage, Catherine’s Palace, Peterhof, Spilled Blood. -Helsinki- One of my favorite places. Very laid back, nice port town. Lots of green space and very nice people -Stockholm- Tied with Bergen for my favorite. This is a great city that doesn’t seem so big. Hop On Hop Off will get you anywhere you want to go. We stayed here a few extra days because there was so much to see here, and the cruise was ending. Vasa Museum, Abba Museum, IceBar- so much to see! All in all= I'm in the Viking cult! I have drunk the Koolaid and I'm all in. We have booked a river cruise for 2020. Hooray! Read Less

Loved all shore excursions and pre-cruise visit to Iceland. The ship was not overcrowded unlike other large cruise lines. So, we didn’t have to get in line for food, and we had no problem with making reservations for the restaurants of our choice. The buffet was always kept clean. Other cruise lines are too big for us and they offer too many different activities in which we have no interest. Optional excursions prices were reasonable. Viking offers privileged access to some attractions. For example, in St. Petersburg, we could get in Peterhof Palace before it opened for general public. Free shuttles were nice for exploring ports on your own time. We like Viking much better than others especially for the following reasons: No children under 18 (quieter and less mess) No charge for beer & wine at lunch & dinner No charge for alternative restaurants No charge for unlimited wifi No inside staterooms (all staterooms have verandas.) No sales pressure Read Less
