We were looking for a special trip to celebrate our 50th anniversary. This cruise exceeded our expectations. We've cruised a number of times before but have never experienced the quality provided by Viking. One of the main selling points for this cruise was the small size of the ship, only 930 passengers. After cruising on ships that carried as many as 3,600 passengers, the small ship experience was great. Another feature we liked was the fact that a complimentary shore excursion was included at each port. Optional excursions were available at extra cost, but we found that other than the two-day excursion in St. Petersburg which we paid for, most of the included excursions met our needs. The guides for the excursions were some of the best we've experienced. While the cost of a Viking cruise is higher than many other cruise lines with similar itineraries, the amenities that are included such as the free shore excursions, the free beer or wine with lunch and dinner, the no extra cover charge for the outstanding alternative restaurants, the free mini bar stocked with sodas and snacks daily, complimentary Wi-Fi, make the cost difference minimal. The quality and variety of the food in all of the restaurants including the buffet was exceptional. The port talks where you actually learn about the port, not just the place to get the best deal on diamonds or tanzanite, were a welcome change from previous cruises we've taken. All cabins on a Viking Cruise are veranda cabins. There are no interior rooms. This cruise was without a doubt the best cruise we've ever taken. I would highly recommend the Viking Cruise experience. After a disappointing cruise with Celebrity in 2014, we vowed we wouldn’t cruise again in a hurry. Our faith in cruising has now been restored again thanks to Viking Sun! We embarked on the Viking Homelands cruise with friends in Stockholm for 14 nights. The embarkation process was a breeze & the staff very welcoming & friendly. Viking Sun is a very stylish ship. The Scandi styling throughout is very timeless, elegant & appointed with beautiful artworks. Our penthouse veranda room was very comfortable indeed & we enjoyed a fully stocked bar fridge which was topped up daily. We also enjoyed having access to laundry facilities on each deck with detergent included. The entertainment was fantastic...an energetic young & talented group who performed in the main theatre & a trio of musicians who performed throughout the ship on a daily basis. The cruise director Bevan was also a very talented performer & was very high profile in all facets of his role which was great. We enjoyed dining in all the restaurants. We particularly enjoyed The Restaurant, Manfredis & the Chefs Table. All of the food & beverages were of a very high quality & the staff were fantastic with impeccable service. There are some beautiful public areas on this ship, namely the Wintergarten, The Explorers Lounge, the Spa & around the main pool. I particularly enjoyed a Nordic Spa Experience one evening in which a group was shown the correct way to use the sauna & snow grotto onboard ...it was so envigorating! We did the included Viking shore excursions at most ports which we found to be a great introduction to each port destination. We did two paid excursions...the 2 day Ultimate St Petersburg & Lübeck & Wismar. These were fantastic excursions with amazing meals & guides, we were very well looked after. On previous cruises we have tired of continually being touted to spend more money in specialty restaurants & beverage packages etc. Cruising with Viking is a truly relaxing experience & it’s great that all is prepaid beforehand. There are no gimmicks on board, namely casinos & art auctions. It’s no wonder Viking is so highly rated...we found this cruise to be faultless. In our opinion they’re a hard act to beat! Would totally recommend Read Less

I am a former travel agent whom specialized in cruises, so needless to say I expect excellent service, and I am not one to write reviews unless I feel that the service was either exceptional, or horrible. We travel quite often, mostly cruises, and for as many as we have been on, we have not found a cruise line that we have found fantastic enough for us to book our next cruise before we leave the ship, until NOW. As long as Viking keeps it's current cruise model we will be Viking loyal, and have already booked our next Italy cruise on board, prior to finishing the Homeland cruise The following will explain why: As for this cruise, every aspect was absolutely EXCEPTIONAL. We chose Viking because we were looking to find a cruise line that treated clientele as years past. We have been on SEVERAL cruises, with other lines, and have found that service, food, accommodations were lacking. I go on a cruise to "Escape" everyday life. Viking does this right. The food was excellent, the staff friendly, helpful and could not be more accommodating. Embarkation was a breeze. Our plane was delayed by 5 hours, which put us in a stressed out mood, also thinking we would miss most of our time in Stockholm. When we arrived at the Ship, we were greeted by an extremely friendly staff, handed our room keys, (which had been ready and waiting for us), there was no long line to wait on, and we quickly made our way to the ship, where we were greeted again, this time with Mimosas and champagne. With such an efficient embarkation, our stress melted away, and we were headed out to explore Stockholm, with plenty of time to see everything we needed to see. This is just a small example of the service you get with Viking. I can tell you that the staff, from the waiters straight to the Senior Officers were always ready to greet the passengers (BY NAME). This type of interaction has you feel as if you are their priority (and you are, everyone of the passengers). The dedication to detail is paramount. When you are in the theatre, there are blankets on the seats in the event you may be cold. This was also in the Mamsens lounge. If you want to watch an outside movie, there is popcorn waiting at your seat, and headphones, which allow anyone to be enjoying the outside area, whether or not you want to see the movie. By the poolside there are towels on each of the chairs, and even on sea days you can get a comfortable seat, no overcrowding or fighting for space. On your way to your excursions you are handed bottles of water (this is all no additional charge, it is important to note Viking DOES NOT nickle and dime its clientele) , there are umbrellas in your cabin, as well as a well stocked minibar, which gets restocked daily (No charge, but depending on cabin level will depend on what is in your bar. I was in a DV5 category, we had sodas and snacks). Beer and wine are plentiful at lunch and dinner. Viking has the best port talks I've seen. What I truly found helpful is that at their port talks, they use Google Maps, so that you can actually see where you will be traveling to in respect to the country, and where you are docked with the ship. For me, it gave me a better understanding of the travel time and what area of the country I was visiting. As far as the excursions, Viking makes sure that you get where you are going to with ease. Representatives are stationed throughout areas to make sure you get to the proper transportation. Disembarkation was just as seamless as embarkation. I booked a taxi to take us to the train station in Bergen. From previous experience I made sure that we left the ship in plenty of time to make our taxi. Well..... we put our luggage out the night before,- nothing new, next morning got up very early and made our way to disembark per our instructions. No long lines! We made our way down the gangplank, again Viking staff staged to help direct, when we got to where the bags were, a Viking staff member asked us our cabin number, then proceeded to walked us to our bags, which were all together. This was so quick and efficient, that we had an hour to wait for our taxi :). I could go on and on, but I will stop here. It would be easier to answer anyone's direct questions about the actual PORTS or Ship, because if I continued this would be a novel :). So please ask questions! Read Less

1) Norway was simply fabulous, breathtaking natural beauty! Estonia caught us off guard with its history and Tallin is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. The Old Town sections were fascinating. We participated in all the included excursions and found them to be interesting and well organized. We purchased the Peterhoff Palace & Gardens tour for the 2nd day in St. Petersburg and were very impressed with whole excursion. We felt most of the tour guides were top notch and did a great job keeping track of everyone. 2) For us, the Welcome Show with the fantastic singers/dancers gave us a warm friendly feeling. The Norwegian song, "Welcome Home" was very touching. The Captain's and selected crew members welcome was the best we've ever attended. It all seemed to set the stage for a wonderful cruise. 3) We really don't know of any criticisms of the ship. The ship is so beautiful and easy to navigate. We loved the smaller number of passengers onboard, it rarely felt crowded. We tried to enjoy the tapestries with explanations and artwork (Viking Art guide app). We visited all 3 pools, the spa, sauna, steam, snow grotto. We listened to all the talented musicians on board and attended quite a few of the theater shows. We listened to several of the informative speakers, port talks and viewed the speciality movies, like the documentary series about the Vikings. Things we missed: the afternoon tea, only because we were busy or too full to try it. The outdoor movie looked interesting and well set up but we selected other entertainment. 4) The food was outstanding in all 4 dining areas. The main restuarant was excellent and easily matched the speciality dining for quality. Of the 2 speciality dining options, we preferred Manfredi's over the the Chef's Table but it really is a matter of personal tastes. Even the World Cafe buffet style was tasty with large windows for enjoyable scenery. Of course, all the staff was incredible! 5) The Viking ship can't be beat and the itinerary was fabulous. As with most cruises you seem to get a sampling of each port and some cities begged for time to spent in them. But we were able to experience so much in 15 days so I wouldn't change anything. Recommendation: GO, don't wait to have a memorable journey! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience Scandinavia and the other Baltic countries: Visiting the cities and countryside, enjoying local foods and spirits, understanding the culture and history, etc. Mission accomplished! The included excursions were insightful and hit the high spots. The train trip to Berlin, although long, helped us touch down in the past international events such as the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, etc. And the tour guides were knowledgeable but also personable enough to add human dimension to facts. For instance, our guide to Berlin talked about his family being stuck in East Berlin after WWII, what that meant re communicating with family in the West, etc. But even more, the cruise itself was outstanding. The ship is beautiful! The officers and support staff were friendly, capable and eager to make our trip special. The food was exceptional, from The Restaurant and World Cafe to the Chef's Table and Manfridi's to afternoon tea. Our cabin was extremely comfortable and spacious enough that we could relax between outings, meals, port briefings and enjoying friends we met onboard. And the entertainment by the singers/dancers was some of the best we've had at sea with any cruise line. All in all, this was such a perfect trip that we (and many others) signed up for another cruise while onboard. Can't wait! Read Less

Do your own laundry service available as well. The pool areas were very nice and service outside was great. Food and dining options were just right and no extra charge for specialty restaurants. The ship had many nice areas in which to relax. The afternoon tea was lovely accompanied by a beautiful selection of sandwiches and sweets. There was a very nice spa and gym. Ship also had a sports deck and walking/running track. The staff did an incredible job getting 650 passengers off and onto a train to Berlin and returning. We were always greeted by staff upon return to ship. Water was always provided when leaving the ship for excursions. Very organized exit to excursions. The only thing I would change is the included excursions had too much bus time and not enough stops for walking about or picture taking. Cruise was wonderful. Read Less

It was a while since I had been to Sweden and Denmark, and my wife had never been. The trip was a perfect way to get a taste of many Baltic countries...and St. Petersburg, Russia. The weather was warm; not a day did it rain. Our accommodations and service was sensational, and the food was so good aboard ship, we chose to eat on board at every opportunity. The staff, from the Captain to those that took special care of our room and us, could not have been finer. They made you feel special. They went out of their way to do the little things that you remember most. The trip was five stars all the way. Our last two cruises were with Viking. We have already reserved for another trip next year and much to our joy, have learned many of the crew on this ship will be sailing with us from Rome to Barcelona. That will make us feel more like it is home, once again. I don't think we will sail on any other line. Read Less

They were so polite and eager to please! The food was very good and menu selections were very adequate!! We loved Manfredi’s and the Italian restaurant! Nice to have variety! The ship was very beautiful! It was kept impeccably clean by the very hard working cleaning staff! Our room steward was so friendly and always considerate and polite! We so enjoyed our first ocean cruise and have booked two more! We have and will continue to recommend the Viking cruise line the family and friends! It is a pricey cruise line but so much is included- which helps!! Giving sizable price breaks/incentives to repeat customers would be very appreciated! We flew SAS- as arranged by Viking! So here is a (long) review of the Viking Sun Homelands cruise we just finished this week. I tried to break it all down as best I could. I would highly recommend anyone who would like this amazing experience to book it! Final views of Viking Homelands Cruise 1- We are aware that our joy about this holiday is influenced by the wonderful and unusual weather we experienced for the entire 32 days in Europe (except misty in Iceland and 50 F) (we spent 10 days in the U.K. with family). The temps were mid 70’s to high 80’s the whole time, with only one 5 minute rain shower in Stockholm. 2- Viking Sun. The ship is amazing. It is well laid out, and well decorated. The hard working staff is always cleaning and polishing. We enjoyed the pianist Olga, the string group, and Luis the guitarist being in different lounges each evening. The nightclub was fun each night and a great place to wind down. Iskra was the bartender who kept up with us- we had Silver Spirits drink package and it was nice to be able to experience different drinks whenever. (Rule of thumb- if you drink 2-3 liquor or upgraded wines per day, it is $$ worthwhile). 3- Stateroom. We had a Penthouse Veranda room- perfect size, lots of storage and drawers. Our cabin steward Fery and his assistant Jayson kept up with our every need. 4- Entertainment. We were very impressed with the quality of the evening entertainment. The cruise director, Bevin, and his assistant Matthew were everywhere! From morning excursions to port talks to evenings, they were always on point for what passengers needed. The entertainment in the theater included a magician, a comedian, and a singer that has played Jean Valjean in Les Mis in West End, so you know he is a powerful talent. The resident production team consisted of 4 highly talented and energetic performers who rocked the theater with a 69’s show, a musicals themed show and a Beatles/ABBA show (we WERE in Stockholm). They were also consistently visible and great ambassadors for the ship. There were other activities during the days and evenings- history and art lectures, team trivia, dance lessons, and more. 4- Food. We ate mostly at the World Cafe buffet- always great choices- sushi, crab legs, shrimp, Prime rib, mussels, tenderloin, oysters, whatever. The menus were posted on the online app so you could make your decision. We ate at the main restaurant a few times, the pool grill a few times, and Manfredi’s, the Italian specialty place once. It was fantastic. We didn’t get to the Chefs Table, the specialty restaurant with a set menu that changes every 2 or 3 days- the day we had reservations, Dennis wasn’t feeling very well- he caught a cold and was not up to it. 5- Shore excursions. We took mostly the included Viking and they were so well organized. Every stop had a free walking or bus tour, plus shuttles included if needed to get into and out of town. One of the best was the Berlin included- we thought we would be dumped on a train, dumped in Berlin, and then find our way back to the train on our own. Instead, the train was chartered and we had a local guy with us the whole time. When we got to Berlin, we were given an orientation bus tour for an hour before we were let off at a central square to wander on our own. After 2 hours or so, we met back at the square, and were bussed to the train. On the train back, we were served wine, beer and snacks, complimentary. It was much more than we expected for the free inclusion. We took 2 of the Viking paid excursions- Pulpit Rock and the Flam railroad. I would recommend both of those. We did a 2 day highlights tour with SPB tours in St Petersburg, which also gave us an evening out with “Go Out Like a Local”- we went to some trendy bars with a 30 something guide and then took an evening canal cruise- private boat- just 5 of us plus our guide, Russian rock music and a bottle of vodka. Skol! 6- a bit about each stop -Iceland. We did the pre-extension but Viking had us in a hotel too far from town. The Golden Circle was remarkable, with the plate tectonics going on, and the volcanic landscapes got the science geology nerd in me all happy. The Blue Lagoon was quite an experience as well -Bergen. Norway was on my bucket list and I understand why. The scenery all through Norway is breathtaking. Take the funicular up to the top of the mountain for great views. -Other 2 stops in Norway. Eidfjord has the Flam railroad which goes up and around the mountains and waterfalls. At Stavanger, we took the small boat out to look straight up those glacially formed cliffs. -Aalborg was just a few hours but another quaint medieval town. Copenhagen was a bit bigger and we took the walking tour and then a canal cruise. -Talinn Estonia- the history of that region is tough. The economy is struggling because of trade problems -Berlin- train and a chance to experience the history of a crazy man and his demented dreams and then how the Cold War took a toll on those in east Berlin. -Gdansk Poland. Another chunk of history. The ship was berthed at the spot where WW2 began. Sobering. Take a look at the Polish amber- it’s very beautiful -St Petersburg- this was actually my least favorite place, but a visit I wouldn’t have changed for anything. This is a huge city, crazy traffic, so many tourists, so much standing in line to get into all the important spots- Hermitage, Catherine’s Palace, Peterhof, Spilled Blood. -Helsinki- One of my favorite places. Very laid back, nice port town. Lots of green space and very nice people -Stockholm- Tied with Bergen for my favorite. This is a great city that doesn’t seem so big. Hop On Hop Off will get you anywhere you want to go. We stayed here a few extra days because there was so much to see here, and the cruise was ending. Vasa Museum, Abba Museum, IceBar- so much to see! All in all= I'm in the Viking cult! I have drunk the Koolaid and I'm all in. We have booked a river cruise for 2020. Hooray! Read Less

Loved all shore excursions and pre-cruise visit to Iceland. The ship was not overcrowded unlike other large cruise lines. So, we didn’t have to get in line for food, and we had no problem with making reservations for the restaurants of our choice. The buffet was always kept clean. Other cruise lines are too big for us and they offer too many different activities in which we have no interest. Optional excursions prices were reasonable. Viking offers privileged access to some attractions. For example, in St. Petersburg, we could get in Peterhof Palace before it opened for general public. Free shuttles were nice for exploring ports on your own time. We like Viking much better than others especially for the following reasons: No children under 18 (quieter and less mess) No charge for beer & wine at lunch & dinner No charge for alternative restaurants No charge for unlimited wifi No inside staterooms (all staterooms have verandas.) To select a Scandinavian cruise, I created a spreadsheet of the top cruise lines going to Scandinavia. Looking at price, ship size, itinerary and ratings it was easy to select Viking as our top choice. It helped that I took the Viking Normandy River Cruise last year and loved it! I also like the fact that there isn’t a casino and the dining options are flexible. The food was outstanding. All of the Viking employees were so courteous and friendly. They always had a smile on their face and remembered our names (I don’t know how they do it!). The tours were excellent and we had great guides. We took some of the included tours and also took the optional tours. The spa was also fantastic. The entire experience was,low key but classy. I already have plans for future Viking cruises and have recommended this cruise to a friend. She’s already booked it. It’s a great value. I’m hooked! Read Less

All restaurants were great...food ,staff and service were outstanding. We chose a penthouse jr. suite which was spacious and comfortable. The region in the Baltic was very beautiful and interesting. All of the countries in the itinerary were worthwhile to visit. It happened to be very hot this year in July with temperatures running in the high 80 ‘s to low 90’s in Germany and St. Petersburg. You should bear in mind that air conditioning is not common in Europe and people that can’t cope with the heat should consider this when choosing the time to take this cruise. One thing not to be missed is entering our final port, Stockholm, sailing through the Achipelago of small islands on the approach. It was worth getting up at 5 AM to experience this serene and magical sight. The staff had told us the approximate time and it should not be missed. Viking provides a complete vacation experience. The Viking Sun is magnificent and easy to get around. You don't feel crowded even with 900 people on board. Service is excellent. Food is delicious and prepared just the way you like to have it served. Eating in the normal dining room or a specialty dining room makes no difference. The waiters are top notch and make you feel like you are royalty. Crew is outstanding and you feel you are part of a family and not a customer. We chose this trip due to the Norwegian itinerary and the 7 day trip fit into our work schedule. We have cruised large ships and small, including very small ships of under 100 passengers and many of the larger lines with mega ships so we have a good basis of comparison. This was our first trip with Viking and the entire experience from embarkation to debarkation and everything in between was flawless. The ship is considered 'small' at 900 passengers. The boarding process was the fastest ever, and we have taken over 30 cruises! The ship itself is well designed, nicely furnished, but in that clean Scandinavian way. The staff was very friendly and efficiency abounded everywhere. The buffet area was well organized, and the food quite good. Despite having a nice main dining room, and two specialty restaurants, many guests enjoyed the themed dinners in the buffet without the need to change clothes from the days touring. The food came out of the open kitchen with service from two sides, and they were happy to cook to order if requested. The Italian restaurant was excellent as well, with service to match. The ships tours, many of which are included in the cruise fare were well organized and very good. We did some optional tours including the food tour in Oslo and bike riding down from Flam (actually Myrdal) after the train trip up. The guides were all excellent and again every aspect was well organized. This was great itinerary to get a feel for the Norwegian fjords, culture and people. Wish we had more time for a longer trip though! Our penthouse veranda was very comfortable, and well laid out. We even enjoyed the guest lecturers, one was an English journalist who was quite interesting and entertaining. We did not see the production shows though. Overall a great trip and would definitely take another Viking Ocean cruise again Read Less

We chose this cruise because we have always wanted to go to Norway, where my husband's maternal family is from. We had the bonus of his sister and her husband being able to join us on this cruise. We have really loved our Viking river boat cruises on the Rhine and Elbe rivers, so were anxious to try a small ship. It was over so quickly, we are now looking forward to our Med cruise on Viking in spring 2020. The cabin was beautiful and we enjoyed having the veranda, especially since we had wonderful, warm weather. The only improvement for us would be more places to hang clothing and towels when showering, and a way to turn off the closet light so it did not wake the person still trying to get some sleep. The restaurants were very good, and we loved the main dining room for breakfast and dinner. We tried the special dining room for the Chinese dinner, but still preferred the view in the main dining room. But our favorite places were the Explorers Lounge where we went before and after dinner, and the back of the boat on the second floor with the couches and panoramic view while underway! Read Less

Our cruise this year on the Viking Sun was our 2nd cruise on the ocean, the 1st being with Holland America to Alaska, and I can say that the Viking Sun was smaller and more intimate than the SS Zaandam. While the food was excellent on both cruises, the Zaandam had a more international selection of cuisine, while the Viking Sun was more continental. This is not a criticism, just a comment. As I said, the food on both ships was excellent. Since the Viking Ship Museum tour was filled before we got to sign up for it, we took the water taxi over to Bygdøy and walked up the hill to the museum. We had dinner in The Restaurant that night and met some people who had taken the tour and were unhappy with the length of time that they spent at the museum. But we were very pleased with our trip across the harbor and of course, getting to spend as much time as we wanted at the museum, which is certainly the high light of our trip. I feel it would help others if you informed them of this option when they tried to sign up for the tour and found it full. Our two other cruises with Viking were river boat cruises up the Rhine and the Elbe. But we recently booked a Med cruise with Viking and are looking forward to it. Read Less

Wanted to see something of Norway and the fjords. We did spend a few days in Amsterdam before departure and a few days in Bergen after the cruise was ended. We have already signed up for a southern hemisphere cruise around Cape Horn for February 2020. There were no children on the cruise as far as I remember, and since there are no child-specific areas for play, etc., I would not recommend these cruises for children. The food was excellent and we really only used the Buffet restaurant because the selection was so wide ranging and the servers were friendly. No problems at all with embarkation or disembarkation - all ran very smoothly. The cabin was just lovely with our little balcony where we could sit outside, and the room attendants were delightful, as were all the people making life pleasant for us on the ship. And I remember there was a laundry room on our deck where I could do my own laundry! The entertainment was high quality, and I could dance in the Bar every evening after dinner. I became known as the "Dancing Queen"! :-) Read Less

We took our cruise on Viking Sun on July 7th leaving from Amsterdam, sailing to Bergen. Overall it was a wonderful cruise on a spectacular ship with a friendly crew to see unbelievable sights. The positive: We enjoy sailing on smaller boats (less than 1,000 passengers) and have sailed with Princess, and Azamara. This, by far, was the best ship we have been on. Throughout the ship, it was just simple little touches that made everything so wonderful. There are plenty of spaces to intermingle and meet people, but also quiet nooks to escape and enjoy the solitude. The Explorer’s Lounge at the front of the boat is outstanding. We had a Penthouse Veranda suite and again, the little touches made it our best cabin ever. Everything from a heated bathroom floor, to a shower you can actually turn around in, to light switches beside the bed, everything was laid out with you in mind. We dined at Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant, the main dining room and the World Café. Mandredi’s was good, but not outstanding. The food in the main dining room and the World Café was very good. We found the main dining room too loud and took most of our meals at the World Café – with the outdoor seating. As we may not get back to Norway, we went on two excursions most of the days in port. Some guides were better than others but on the whole, all but one or two of the excursions were very good to outstanding. It was annoying that there was a last minute time change to one of our tours that made us miss going on both for that day. All of the crew members were friendly and helpful. They always took that extra step to see that you enjoyed your time on board. The less than positive: We signed up for the post cruise excursion of three days in Iceland. As it was considered part of the cruise, Viking made the travel arrangements. I do not think I will ever let Viking book air travel for us again. On Viking’s air web site, it states the best flights available, minimum connections standards of 60 to 90 minutes, most arrival and departure times ranging from 9:00am to 5:00pm local time and automatic seat request. None of that was true for our flights. Direct flights were available from Bergen to Iceland but we were routed through Copenhagen. We only had a 40 minute layover in Copenhagen. We had to leave the boat at 3:45am for a 6:00am flight and we were never given the opportunity for requesting seats. Also, you should note that when Viking makes the air arrangements, you still have to pay extra for luggage. All in all, it was a wonderful trip and one I would highly recommend. We have done both Viking river and ocean cruises and have enjoyed both. I would not hesitate to recommend Viking curises, just book your own air connections if possible. Read Less

We wanted to visit Scandinavia, and this cruise highlighted many of the areas we wanted to visit. We have been to Europe many times, but this was our first trip via cruise. We would like to take a river cruise next time. Our embarkation was excellent, and we were greeted right away after landing in Amsterdam. The food was out of this world! Every meal was awesome with wonderful service each time. Our staff members for our cabin were wonderful and very courteous and kind. The weather could not have been more perfect as well, so we thank the captain for arranging that for us, too :-). The port talks and TED talks that were available were all very informative, and the entertainment on board was excellent as well. I loved seeing so many wonderful books so readily available all around the ship as well. Thank you to all the staff for helping to make this such a wonderful experience. Read Less

It was part of a special Viking promotion. The ship, itself, was excellent and the service was excellent. The Restaurant meals were excellent and the waitstaff was efficient and friendly. We were disappointed in some of the included shore excursions as we felt as if we had not gained a sense of the city. The exceptions to that were Oslo, Norway, where we had an outstanding tour guide and Hamburg, Germany, where we had more time to get a feel for the place. The visit to Skagen, Denmark, was good, although our tour guide didn't give us a chance to stop and take in individual sites. But it was a beautiful little city with friendly people and interesting shops. It would have been good to drop one of the Danish stops and add a Norwegian stop. If we were going to take the cruise again, I think I would sign up for some of the optional tours to get a better sense of the towns. Read Less

This cruise was to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. We took advantage of a last minute cabin upgrade offer and were glad we did. The ship was beautiful and easy to get around. All the restaurants served delicious food and the service is always outstanding with their specialty restaurants particularly standing out. We enjoyed all of the shore excursions and took advantage of a couple of extra ones. This cruise took us to ports we haven't been too before. The local guides provide a wonderful perspective and offer personal bits of information making the tour more enjoyable. The staff is always pleasant with a smile and kind word when encountered. We are pleased with the house keeping and dining staff which we see several times a day. They are always helpful and quite responsive. We enjoyed the entertainment, especially having a live band to dance to. The port talks and enrichment lectures are worth attending. They are enjoyable, entertaining and educational. We can't wait for our next Viking cruise. Read Less

Informal, impromptu, catered to our every need, every detail covered. Super easy getting on and off. Definitely going again on the Mediterranean next time. Great local guides, the sound devices give you freedom of movement during tours. The ship never has to tender, we can always dock and just get off and walk around. We love walking, and these cities are built for it. The Danish towns of Skagen and Fredericia were just lovely, the people so welcoming and friendly. These lovely small towns said farewell to our ship with their little marching bands! We loved Copenhagen, too, extended there on the start of the trip. Kiel, Hamburg and the Kiel Canal were also highlights. Entertainment on board was exceptional, as were the historical folks on board. Lots of food choices, never had to get too dressed up, we were able to dine when and where we wanted without having to make a reservation. Read Less

A friend suggested it because it was new and had an interesting itinerary. I had been on a Viking tour of China so was familiar with the company. I was very impressed. The ship is lovely, the service is excellent, wine with lunch and dinner was included and was very good and generously poured and the places we visited were interesting. I liked the entertainment and the lounges. We were in room 4094, a medium priced choice. Very nice and quiet as well. We ate in both specialty restaurants - the Italian themed one was very good - as well as in the dining room and the buffet. We were able to eat some lunches and dinners out on the deck and that was very nice. When I got back home I told all my friends that I wouldn't go on any other cruise line besides Viking. The good news is that they are building a lot more ships in this same style! Read Less
