The nicest part of our cruise on the Viking Sun was the polite, friendly, and very clean attention of our room steward. The stateroom is a little small, but sufficient. The veranda was nice, but that squeaking veranda door - and the inability to leave it open for even short periods of time without banging shut - was frustrating; needless to say, we lost some sleep due to squeaks. Food on the Viking Sun was ok. Not bad, there was always something that was at least satisfactory. Sometimes our choices were less palatable than we had hoped - and service, especially in the Restaurant, was lacking. No fault to the staff - there were too many people for limited staff to serve efficiently. Neither of the specialty restaurants were extraordinary, which we expected due to advertising and promotion and hearsay. We did manage time to relax, which was our goal. With better weather, that would have been more easily accomplished; can’t fault Viking for that. But if you are looking for elegance akin to the true luxury lines, pay the extra dollars for a first class experience. The elegant ads lured us in...to an average experience. And be prepared for crowded disembarkation and a game of “where’s our luggage.” Read Less

This was the sixth cruise my wife and I have taken with Viking--four river cruises and, now, two ocean cruises. We purchased the pre-cruise extension in Lisbon because we wanted to see it on the trip. Overall, the trip was excellent. We are accustomed to a very high standard of performance from Viking and our expectations, for the most part were fulfilled. The ship was immaculate, well maintained and well operated. Most of the time in a crossing is devoted to sea days and rest. The entertainers on this ship were truly extraordinary. They presented music that stretched from classical opera repertoire to Motown. There are no dedicated "dancers" but the singers danced and sang and did so very professionally. They entertained! The crew were friendly as well as helpful and accommodating, including the members of the deck department. They all seemed dedicated to helping passengers enjoy a great vacation--and they succeeded. Stateroom attendants were amazingly thorough and helpful. Our air arrangements were horrible however. We were booked on a United flight that operated an old Continental 737-200. Even though we booked suite accommodations on the ship, we were given some of the least desireable seats on this very over-crowded, filthy and old aircraft. On our return, free-air flight from Miami to Jacksonville we were charged $30 per bag by American Airlines and, again, assigned the very least desireable seats on the very cramped Embaer RJ-45. We could have driven from Miami to Jacksonville and arrive sooner than we did using our Viking Air booked flight. Do not use Viking Air. Be prepared for very leisurely meals in the dining room. Plan for a couple of hours or more at dinner if you choose to take your dinner in the dining room. Service is very slow, even on this ship of only 900 passengers. Or hope that more servers are hired to provide better service. The problem is not the waiters:the problem is that there are too few of them. Afternoon tea in the Winter Garden is a highlight of each day for us. With Viking, you also can expect a robust enrichment program presented by a "Resident Historian" as well as various "Guest Lecturers." Watch the schedule carefully to plan your days in a way that permits you to take advantage of these opportunities. They are wonderful and varied. We were particularly attracted to the presentations of a flautist who talked about music and its relationships to our trip and ports of call. We also heard from an astronomer and had the opportunity to learn about ocean sailing and rowing adventures. Viking is a welcome newcomer to the ocean cruise market. It provides a superior experience and, knowing its careful attention to detail in all its operations, I expect the delays in dining service will be resolved before our next trip, which most likely will be on Viking (but without its air option). Incidentally, there were no children among the passengers and there is no children's program. This is not an experience for children. Read Less

We love the size of the Viking Sun class ships and find the Viking staff very helpful welcoming. The Sun is a 2 yr old ships, which like others (e.g Viking Star) is extremely comfortable. This reposition cruise was a last minute decision to primarily to celebrate my spouse's recent retirement. Viking repositions this ship from Europe to MIA where Vikings starts its World cruise offering. Therefore, the crossing offers only two ports of call (Azores and Bermuda). While most people on board were seasoned travelers, a few people were surprised that even with all the greatest technical advances this ship could rock. While we had a variety of weather, the Atlantic is not a small pond and it can be quite rough. Although I heard some complaints, I was surprised about some very unrealistic expectations. Since, we actually treated the trip as an adventure we loved it and rod ecommend that you take some Dramamine with you on any cruise . We did not need ours and the medical center could provide some, if you got seasick. Based on our sailing history, we would not rate this past cruise as extremely rough. The cabins on board the Viking Ocean are very comfortable, clean and well layout. Plenty of space to move around in with many public nooks suitable for curling up with a good book! The Viking Staff is selected for their "yes, we can" attitude. Although each one us are very unique individuals, the Viking crew is overall very happy and proud to be working for a rapidly growing company which the staff likes with a 90% retention rate over any 10 yr period. Food as expected on a cruise, is abundant, diverse and always delicious. On Christmas Eve the SUN served large steamed lobsters and perfectly executed Osso Bucco in their regular dining room. There were a few caviar offerings at the bars with all daily events and menus for all meals posted on in-room tv monitors. A few times we needed to use room service and while it too was very tasty, it could have been delivered a bit hotter. Although this cruise had only two ports of call there was plenty of entrainment. We do like the fact that Viking does not have a casino onboard. There were some small poker games and Chinese Mahjong available for those so inclined. There are also video tables where you can enjoy playing a computer black jack dealer. In addition to excellent port of call talks, Viking has a number historians, technical experts (e.g driverless car engineering), and musicians discussing their expertise in very simple and interesting presentations. Viking requires that passengers be at 16 years or old, which we found the adults to be quite friendly and open to making new acquaintances. For us, most part we found tables for two available. Since our last cruise, the bars have a greatly expanded selection of quality brands. Since I favor Tanquary Ten, I was pleased that it was available at every bar. and covered by our drink package. There is a night club for dancing and a night cap, but we did not visit it this trip. The cruise director conducted a caroling sing along in the atrium on Christmas Eve, utilizing the classical pianists, the Viking band and even the on board acoustic guitarist. Unfortunately, I did scrap up my leg at the Lisbon Airport and I needed to used the medical staff to heal it. This inconvenience limited my ability to use the abundant spa fitness services on board. The Viking Norwegian spirt shines with very unique spa treatments and many pools located in the spa, in addition to the lap pools and hot tubs found on deck. On the SUN you can elect to start in a hot sauna and then cool down in an ice room with snow. If it is your thing, there are great gym machines exist and in the morning you are invited to yoga/pilates classes. Otherwise, weather permitting, you can take to the promenade and get your exercise by running or walking around the ship with instructions on how many laps constituted a mile. All in all we enjoyed ourselves and would consider going again. We find sailings of this duration suit our life styles very well and while we liked this crossing, there are so many other offers that we have not tried. For example we doing a Panama crossing this month. Happy Cruising! Read Less

Staff is friendly and courteous. Food was exceptional, could have been more by the way of entertainment perhaps, especially on lengthy sea days during cold weather. Overall one of the best cruising experiences I have had. We have already booked another Viking sea cruise for 2019! For anyone who is considering the liquor package, I highly recommend it. The wine selections are excellent and the liquors are top shelf.... well well worth the money. The spa area with the heat, cold, and salt water therapy is outstanding and never crowded. The locker situation leaves a lot to be desired however. The lockers should open and lock with your key card. Very few of them worked and a steward would have to come to lock or unlock your locker... a bit annoying.... when you set aside the minor inconveniences you’ll realize that you have had a really good experience with great staff and you will meet some very interesting people. This was our first transatlantic cruise and we were worried about travelling during the Christmas holiday but the crew (especially the Entertainment director Heather) of the ship made it really special with Christmas Interdenominational Church Services and Sing-Along's in the atrium. The spa and gym facilities were well maintained and the staff were readily available to train you on how to use equipment. The general director Camiel made my hubby's Christmas Eve dinner extra special by finding out they had Lutefisk available for him, even though it wasn't on the menu. It's a Norwegian type of fish his family traditionally has at Christmas. The crew all went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and special and we enjoyed several tours of the ship, like the Galley and the Bridge. We had plenty of time to relax and read if we wanted to, but they also had so many different events we could attend that we were never bored. Oh and did I mention the amazing food??? I don't think we had any bad meals the whole 12 days and there were so many different restaurant choices. There was the quick World Cafe, Mamsen's Cafe, and also 3 other Restaurants where ladies would be escorted to their table by the awesome servers. They also let you choose whether you wanted to just sit alone or if you'd like to join others at a table, which we did several times and got to meet some really interesting individuals. There were also so many places you could hang out and never feel crowded like it is on some other big ships. Overall just amazing!! Wish we could afford to go more often!! Read Less

Our 12-day mid-Atlantic crossing on Viking Sun started from Lisbon and ended in Miami, with stopover in two ports - one in Ponta Delgada (Azores), and another in Hamilton (Bermuda). We booked our cruise and flights with Viking direct. The first part of the cruise was very rough and bumpy but calmed down as we headed toward west. My husband and I flew on Delta Air’s red-eye flight from New York to Lisbon, arriving on the morning of our cruise. At the airport, the Viking reps couldn’t find our names on their rosters, but it was quickly sorted out and we were able to get on the shuttle bus along with our fellow passengers. We arrived at the Jardim Do Tabaco Pier where the Viking Sun was docked. After a quick check-in, we unload our carry-on bags in our stateroom and headed out to the city. The ship was not scheduled to leave until 11 PM, so we took Uber to Cervejaria Ramiro to have seafood lunch, and then to Manteigaria to pick up half a dozen of Lisbon’s famous pastel de nata. These delicate pastries costs only 6 euros and was very well packaged for take-out. We got back to the ship at 5:15 PM as that’s when the emergency drill was being held and everyone was required to attend. We had some of the pastries as our late night snacks and kept the rest in the mini fridge for later consumption. It was delicious cold as it was warm. Sun is Viking’s 4th ocean liner. Each ship is small, with only 930 passengers. All have the same layout, so you’ll only get lost once. As with everything Viking does, their customer service is TOP KNOTCH! Food on this ship was one of the best we ever had on any of our previous cruises – everything was delicious and fresh! We ate at all the restaurants (including the specialty restaurants) and our favorite was the World Cafe for their variety, choices, and attentive wait staff. Our room was the Penthouse Veranda on the 6th deck. It was very roomy and comfortable and had everything we needed, including his & hers slippers and robes. Bathroom also was roomy, but the shower temperature tends to change by itself. (I suppose we should’ve reported this to the Customer Service but didn’t.) There were plenty of storage spaces in the room, with safe and mini fridge that was refilled daily with drinks and snacks. We had two wonderful housekeepers, Ganang and Nestor, who always kept our room tidy and clean. Our room was in the front of the ship. We quickly realized our mistake in choosing this location when the ship encountered rough Atlantic Ocean! On rough sea days (for which there were more days than I cared to remember), staying in our room was like riding on a roller coaster! We should’ve chosen our room in the middle or in the back of the ship, as that’s where the stabilizers are located. To everyone’s relief, the ocean calmed down as we headed toward Bermuda. There’s self-service laundry room on every deck. Both the washers and dryers are large sizes. The detergent dispenser boxes are located in back of the appliances. You need to press the number that corresponds to your washing machine to inject the detergent into your washer. You need to bring your own dryer sheets and remember to remove the lint when you’ve finished. Nothing beats having clean clothes when I’m packing on the last day! Entertainment – scattered around the ship are the talented resident pianist (who’s also a composer!), a guitarist, and string duo. Beautiful music can be heard everywhere on the ship. There were also many enrichment programs given throughout the day offering many interesting topics, including a presentation of simulated Boeing 757 cockpit by a retired airline pilot, Lou Thieblemont. It was absolutely FASCINATING! Very rarely do I remember anything from these lectures, however, but on this occasion, one speaker stood out for me. His name is Mick Dawson and he ROWED across not just the Atlantic Ocean but also the Pacific Ocean! His lectures were all very inspirational. I used the gym’s rowing machine for only 10 minutes and I had enough. I can’t imagine rowing for grueling 189 days straight in the Pacific Ocean (a Guinness World Record!) Meeting such an AMAZING individual was worth taking this cruise! I bought his pre-signed book at the ship’s boutique – a Christmas present for myself. Nightly show was at 9:15 PM. Seats are limited, so you need to arrive early. Sometimes we caught the show, sometimes not. Viking Sun’s singers and band are all very talented -- as well as the guest magician, Stephen Williams. We thought we’ve seen all the magic tricks in the book, but he surprised everyone! Don’t miss his show if you see his name on the program. Heading the entertainment dept is Viking Sun’s mezzo-soprano cruise director, Heather Clancy, who looks like a school headmaster until she started singing Carmen. Her assistant is Brian Rodriguez, a tenor, who we had the pleasure of hearing him sing Beatles last year when we were on Viking Sky. LivNordic Spa – there’s no extra charge for using the ship’s thermal spa. Space is very limited, but we always found a place to soak or to sweat. We were disappointed that none of their four hot benches were hot. Each bench was lukewarm at best. (This was also true on Viking Sky.) I booked the spa’s Deep Tissue Massage for both of us before leaving home. My masseuse was Ingrid and she was very good. She removed all the tightness from my body and my muscles felt relaxed afterwards. My husband on the other hand did not cared for his masseur, who not only had garlicky breath, but also did not have enough strength. I tried to book another DTM with Ingrid for us, but she was all booked. Gym – had plenty of exercise machines and equipments. We found that going there early in the morning was the best time to use the treadmills. There is a separate room for stretching and for weight lifting. Food/Drinks – the executive chef on this ship is Thomas Noack, a very capable young chef. He was always walking around the World Café, making sure that everything was properly prepared. Food was very good no matter where we ate. One afternoon, they served lobster salad in the pool area. We liked it so much we got a second plate! I highly recommend Viking Burger at the Pool Grill and Mamsen’s waffle at the Explorers’ Lounge. We did not care for Manfredi’s rib eye. The steak was very fatty so we cut most of it off. Looking at other people’s plates, we could see that others also felt the same way. The second night at Manfredi’s, I ordered their seafood special, which turned out to be king crab legs. It was very meaty and very buttery -- VERY good! I wished I had order that the first time. As with other Viking cruises (from their river to ocean cruises), majority of their passengers belong to the older demographic. We are empty nesters but not yet at the retirement age. We enjoyed talking to many of the passengers and found conversations interesting and entertaining. We only had a problem with one particular couple, possibly the oldest couple on the ship (the husband was a few days shy of his 89th birthday), whom we found annoying. They acted like the ship was their private vessel! One incident happened on the morning we docked in Bermuda. My husband and I were having breakfast at the World Café and admiring the beautiful view outside, when we heard this elderly fellow making a lot of noises behind us. There were plenty of empty tables nearby, so we didn’t’ know what the problem was. Apparently, where we were sitting, had the best view of Hamilton, and that’s where this couple wanted to sit! The guy was huffing and puffing with all his might that I finally offered to give up our seats to them. A wait staff quickly stepped in and usher this couple to a nearby empty table by the window, even as the guy continued to complain that our seats had a better view. (Personally, I don’t think there’s any bad view in Bermuda, but go figure!) They were the only rude people we met on this cruise. Majority of the other passengers were polite and gracious and we enjoyed their company. Overall, we had a wonderful time on Viking Sun! From beginning to end, everything was well organized and stress-free. Viking is our favorite cruise line and we look forward to be onboard again! Read Less

We had previously cruised with Viking in 2017 on a river cruise from Paris to Normandy. The service, excursions, food, camaraderie, and outdoor dining was very relaxing for us, and educational. We still talk about what we saw and learned. A Viking flyer sent to us detailed their new ocean cruises and brand-new ships. Their ratings were right at the top of the chart. We signed up and were truly happy with the congeniality, sincere friendliness (to include the usually behind-the-scenes crew) and stress free sailing. Many of their crew would remember our names to boot. All areas of the Sun were never crowded during both day and night activities. Alcoves to sit and talk without the din of crowds of other passengers was very welcome. No one pushing drinks constantly around the pool areas. What will keep us coming back is the absence of any photographers, no casino, and, sorry grandpa-ma, NO KIDS. The ship is QUIET. We are seniors, and the mega-ships being launched lately hold no appeal for us. Food is plentiful and healthful, but we avoid packing on the pounds by not ever taking the ship's elevators and walking extensively each day. Not many others did, as we usually had the walking deck to ourselves! Viking is the best value out there, bar none. Sorry again, no water slides! Read Less

Western Mediterranean Cruise, 12 nights. Traveling solo. Rome to Lisbon Shore excursions were very good. Guides knew their subject matter. Viking Sun staff needs to recognize and treat solo passengers the same as other passengers. Except for one experience, dining staff were negligent and offhand to me as a solo passenger. At one dinner I was literally taken to the last table in the dining room, past all the other empty tables (I was early). I asked what was wrong with those tables. I was told they were for "the other passengers". Obviously I did not take that table. And I won't be cruising with Viking again. Generally recommended Mediterranean ports, eastern and western: Rome - a great walkable city Florence - spend time in the museums Valencia - very pretty Greek Islands - any of them, all beautiful Istanbul - see the Blue Mosque Malaga - see the Moorish architecture Read Less

On board entertainment nightly and the bar service was grand. All on board service was from breakfast/lunch/dinner was outstanding. I just can't say enough of the service, meals, onboard ship persons and utmost service from all. Spa, pools and on board amenities are a huge factor on why we booked along with only 940 guests on the ship. We enjoy cruising with Viking. They are first class and do not “nickel and dime” you. The service is excellent and the crew is very good. Everyone working on the ship is friendly and says hello with a smile. The food is outstanding and the two specialty restaurants serve unique food . It is nice traveling with only adult passengers and also not getting harassed by photographers. The entertainment is average. We usually enjoy the lectures and classes , however, we did not enjoy them on this cruise. The topics were not interesting or relevant for us. I don’t care about somebody rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. The cruise port talks were not well done and the moderator seemed to be just reading his presentation. The two cruise directors were very friendly and personable- Mark and Heather. The two musical shows that Heather and her assistant, Brian Rodriguez, put on were very good. They both have beautiful voices . The glitches on our cruise were associated with the transition from one cruise to the other. It seemed that they forgot we were doing a B2B and we got no communication about the second half. There was a considerable change in the service for the second cruise and service wasn’t as good as the first part. There were long waits in the dining room for just service and food . Read Less

The Viking Sun is an absolutely gorgeous ship, furnished with Norwegian taste which is sleek and elegant in nautical blue and silver-beige. The public spaces are large and comfortable and beautiful, and don't seem crowded because there are so many of them. Free access to high-end spa featuring Nordic options like a heated mineral water spa, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and snow room. The crew knows how to show you a good time and make it seem effortless. Food was extraordinary, with several restaurants to choose from, and menus that varied every day featuring local items like tapas while in Spain. Room service is also available 24 hours. And the excursions were managed efficiently and hosted by the best local tour guides. There is an included excursion in every port, plus many optional ones to choose from. Being in the Mediterranean in the off season was delightful. My friends commented that our photos showed well because they sights weren't overcrowded like they are in the summer months. It is a very busy cruise with no sea days and lots to see and enjoy. The service on Viking is always excellent. We enjoyed four dinners in the included alternate dining. The Chef's table is definitely a great experience with very tasty menus. They always have a wide variety of shore experiences which are also very informative and of good value. My only complaint is you are supposed to get an included tour , yet they do fill up and sometimes are not available which I feel is false advertising. The other suggestion I would have is schedule the tours so you could do both an included tour and an option tour if desired. The resident historian was great. If I had only had him in high school , I would have learned and retained a lot more about history. Read Less

PROS: We picked this cruise for the length and itinerary--Rome to Miami 24 days. Iincluded tours in most locations were very good. The sea days were much appreciated after spending 14 days on a port a day. Getting on the ship was a breeze. The Sun is mostly identical to the Sky which we had been on in June, just newer. Very clean and well appointed. The Chef's Table had the best food. CONS: The included tours in Barcelona and Lisbon were a waste of time. Having been to both locations previously, we skipped out on both tours midway through and did our own thing. These could have been much better The exercise classes were very disappointing in selection and length. And the evening entertainment was hit and miss. Enrichment talks were often scheduled at the start of dinner. If you went to that, you would eat late and miss the entertainment. Getting off the ship in Miami was a nightmare--very disorganized and lack of communication. They kept reminding people to vacate their rooms but we couldn't leave the ship. And the people who were on their own (no flights, etc) were grouped to leave the ship first--just a bad end. Read Less

This was my first venture across the Atlantic. My husband was in service and had visited some of the countries 50 years ago. When I suggested this cruise, he was interested to see what, if anything, had changed. We chose a pre cruise extension in Rome which was amazing. We spent two days exploring with visits to the Colosseum and Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, shopping and restaurants. Our hotel was convenient to everything. The major positive of this experience was the fact that Viking was so organized, their employees very gracious, and the follow-up phone call from Vic was unexpected. We did not have one complaint about anything. We truly enjoyed our stewards - Viveck and Rinaldi (I hope I spelled their names correctly). We got to meet and enjoy the company of the entertainers: Tina, Shaun, Josh and Amelia. Truly exceptional voices and so friendly. Overall the entertainment was unbelievable including Minky G and her guitar. Enjoyed talking with Alex in Torshavn, and Suzannah in the SPA. The dining experience was beyond expectation. The tour guides on the shore excursions were so informative which enhanced the shore excursions' experiences. The people we met during our free time in the different countries were so nice to us. And of course, our ship, The Viking Sun, was fabulous. We did a one day post extension in Paris which was so memorable. While we got to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night, we were disappointed that we didn't have time to experience the Louvre except by night by taking photographs. I wish we could have done two days in Paris. My husband's sister and her husband have traveled several times with Viking River Cruises. They praised Viking for their attentiveness and graciousness. We were on the ship for 14 days. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed the cruise very much. We never felt like we were crowded. The public spaces were lovely and our cabin was a nice size with an amazing amount of storage. We were given an upgrade to the Penthouse Veranda suite which was a wonderful surprise. The mini bar was generously refreshed daily and the linens were always crisp. We wanted to see Lisbon, Valencia and Lucca so chose this trip. It was very easy getting on and off the ship, there were no tenders which was fantastic. You could walk into most towns or Viking would provide a shuttle. Viking also provides included tours in all ports. Many ships do not. We did pay for a few extra tours. There were many to choose from. Unfortunately because of the protests in France we couldn't drive into Aix-in-Provence but we understand that those things happen when traveling. The Chef's Table is high end food cooked perfectly and presented beautifully with wine pairings. There is no cost for the special dining rooms which is unlike many other ships. We found that if we didn't have a reservation, if there was room you could be seated. The World Cafe buffet had many fresh and good tasting offerings for breakfast lunch and dinner. The Pool Grill had a surf and turf night that was delicious and the chocolate buffet in the beautiful Wintergarten was stunning. Although we did not try the free sauna and snow room other guests raved about it. Read Less

We have been Viking fans for many years but this was our first sailing on the Sun. Our biggest issue was intermittent sewer odors coming through the ventilation system (not from the bathroom area). Although maintenance and Engineering attempted to resolve, they did not resolve, possibly because this is a design issue or requires a bigger fix than they could do at sea. Either way, Guest Services management was totally unsympathetic and offered no apologies, etc. One really nagging concern is that we were upgraded from a Penthouse Veranda on deck 4 to a Penthouse Veranda Junior Suite on deck 8. I can't help but wonder if they had previous sewer odor issues with this room and this was their attempt to get by until they could get a permanent fix? Noise level in this room was unusually loud and apparently came from doors slamming immediately below the room in crew access corridors or ? Food service often was very lacking in the World Cafe (sometimes nearly had to tackle waiters for beverages) even though they appeared to be adequately staffed. Perhaps this was a training issue related to the rapid growth. The quality of entertainment from the on board musicians poor. Again, this was very different from all our previous Viking experiences. Optional excursions ranged from poor to good (but none "great") and most of our's were expensive (more than $200 pp). With tipping and other costs included, the Viking price point and value is not what it used to be. Although I left similar comments with Guest Services and on my end of cruise survey, I have yet to hear any response from Viking Management. We will likely stick to Viking river cruises going forward and look to other small ship cruise lines for ocean cruises. Read Less

Weather was cool but not really chilly and the seas were basically calm except for part of one evening. Very efficient meet up in Barcelona airport - certainly not a real busy place at about 8:00 am. Boarded the ship efficiently a little before the 11:00 am access to cabin on deck seven. Hung out in Mamsen's until cabin opened. Very relaxed and server was very pleasant. Cabin ready on time and was clean. Steward was very nice and showed us the features. He continued to be very helpful through out the voyage.. Liked the convenience of deck seven - very few cabins and virtually no traffic in the hallway. Very easy to get to World Cafe as well as to Explorer Lounge (there is a door from cabin hallway to the port side of the Explorers' Lounge. Liked the PV2 cabin - shower is very nice sized and twin sinks is nice. Having two TVs on ein bed area and one in sitting area, separated by very nice room divider curtain was very nice. Disembarking for excursions was handled very smoothly and without too much of a wait. Read Less

This was the perfect itinerary for my wife and I. We've always wanted to see the this part of the world and we were dying for a chance to experience a Viking Ocean Cruise. We've previously been on Viking River Cruises but never before been on an ocean cruise with any cruise line. Our experience leads us to conclude that Viking has successfully carried over their brand experience from river cruises to their ocean cruises. I must say the wait staff in the dining venues were outstanding and friendly. That was one of the key elements that caused us to look forward to dining each evening. And one day, we were onboard for lunch and had a great experience eating at the Wintergarden Pool Bar. We we each had absolutely fabulous cheeseburgers. When someone stopped to ask if he could get us anything, I said, "You know, I'd really like a milk shake but I know you don't have those on the menu." He responded, "Well, let me see what I can do." We were up on the 7th deck. He went all the way down to the bar on the 2nd deck and had the bar tender there make TWO milk shakes...one for me and one for my wife. We had no expectation of that level of service. Much to our surprise, he presented them to us. What a delight! And I can't say enough about our cabin steward, Jaya. He was absolutely outstanding in his attentiveness to our desires and kept our cabin impeccable. Read Less

We went with our son, daughter in law, & two grand children. They had never been to the Mediterranean. It was a great trip that they could afford, and everything was inclusive. The dining on board was exquisite. The entertainment & excursions were great. The ship was well appointed, and you didn't feel crowded. The service & crew were exceptional. This was our third Viking cruise, and needless to say they are great people. Our son and wife had a very enjoyable cruise. It was especially great , since their grown children enjoyed it immensely. It was our son & wife's second Viking cruise. Everything went very smoothly once we were aboard the ship. We had airline delays due to weather & mechanical problems. Flying is not as easy as it used to be; it has become stressful. But the Viking cruise definitely distressed us all. We highly recommend the Viking cruise line! Read Less

We chose Viking because several of our friends have cruised with Viking before and had wonderful experiences. We chose this particular cruise because of the itinerary, and it was absolutely perfect!!!! We also chose to cruise in October, and the weather in the Mediterranean was wonderful !!! At each port we had fun excursions to choose from. We just can’t say enough about the ship, the crew, the food, the destinations, and the wonderful people that we met. We especially liked that Viking does not have a casino, and even though we love children it was nice to not have children aboard on the cruise. The entertainment in the evening was first class, The entertainers were exceptional! The ship is beautiful, and our room exceeded our expectations. We have no complaints about anything, and are looking forward to going again !! We recommend the Viking Sun highly, it was everything we expected and more! Read Less

We wanted to try Viking. Their food was very good. But we both agreed that Oceania's food is better. The cabin was comfortable. We had great cabin attendants. Always there to help. The mini bar was always stocked, extra towels if needed. The mustard drill was fast and very good. The ship was clean and the most comfortable ship that we have ever been on after more than twenty some cruises. Not crowded at all. There was always a comfortable place to sit and relax. Check in was fast and very easy. The staff was right there to help with any question. It felt like a very safe ship as well. The free excursions were nice. We had been to these places before, but not the very same locations. The ship is really the perfect size for us. Although, I have to admit that we like the small ships too. Like Sea Dream. I would definitely take another cruise on Viking. We haven't yet been on a River Cruise and would also like to try one of those soon. Read Less

The ship is beautiful and the public area is plentiful and tastefully done. The spa area is excellent, I wish I have more time to explore the spa facility. The port Sete was not originally on the itinerary and it was not an interesting port for a stop. Shuttle service at Florence was not up to par. We were left at the bus stop for over an hour in the rain and we never received an apology for the mess up. The ride should have come every 30 minutes. On the positive note, the staff on board are excellent, not only did they carry out their duties perfectly, they are also very good in anticipating the guest's need and offer alternatives and help without being asked. The laundry facility is great, I just wish there's more of them, maybe one on each floor. We also had a mixed up in the reservation restaurant. We had to wait for a long time before we were taken care of. Read Less

We choose this cruise because of the routing, and this time of year for the lighter crowds of the off season and cooler weather. We were pleased with both the weather and lack of crowds. Also everything was decorated for Christmas which made it even more beautiful. Over all both the tours provided and the extra excursions we purchased were excellant. However, on the Night of Flamenco in Barcelona, I felt the venue was a little too commercial. The dancing itself was excellant, but the tapas and sangria were mediocre at best. Except for the ham, cheese and olives, the rest of the tapas were not good, the sangria was not authentic and the creme brulee was burnt. Also, because we booked a morning tour for the Monseratt Abby, we could not also do the included tour of Barcelona, they overlapped by 15 minutes. It seems like they could have scheduled that better. Our pre and post extensions in Madrid and Rome were very nice. In Madrid there was an included 1/2 day tour of the city, excellent tour guide. In Rome however there was no included tour, I found this to be inconsistant. The food on the ship was excellent, fresh, delicious available. The Restaurant, their main dinning room, was order off the changing menu, and freshly prepared with service equal to any fine dining establishment. The World Cafe, the morning noon and night buffet was fresh, and delicious, with some prepared to order foods also. All of the other restaurants etc. were additionally as good, although, the lasagne in Manfredi's left something to be desired. Our Silver beverage package was worth every penny, (not expensive) it was basically an open bar the whole time on the ship. We are not heavy drinkers, but it was nice to have a cocktail or two before dinner or after an excursion. I loved that they charged us a flat fee daily, (15.00) for tips for everyone, without having to dig out cash everytime you turned around. The staff on the Ship were courteous, efficient, and friendly. The embarking and disembarking were efficient and easy. Never waiting, very organized. Over all a truly wonderful experience. We went on this cruise to join our friends who went on River cruises with us. We also wanted to see the beautiful Viking ship that is advertised on our TV programs. The ship is totally lovely. The food was excellent. The staff wonderful. We were happy with many of the excursions in the cities on the cruise. But some of the excursions were not planned well and were rushed. We spent more time on the bus to and from Florence than in the city itself. Also rainy fall weather disrupted a couple of our excursions. Perhaps the fall is not the right time for this trip. One disappointment is that the ship always moved from port to port at night while we slept. The only coastlines we saw from the ship were Barcelona, our first port and when we left Monaco, a truly beautiful view. We did not see the Italian Amalfi coast from the ship when sailing from Florence to Rome. So sad. Read Less

Wanted to try the ocean cruise since we had already done a river cruise. My wife and I were not disappointed. The ship was big enough to feel safe and small enough to feel like family. I wish the itinerary would have included a few sea days in order to explore the ship more and been able to use the ships facilities without sacrificing shore excursion time. The ports of call were outstanding. The excursions were very interesting and informative. Most ports were easily accessible to local Hop on Hop off busses which dropped us off right at the ship. The hot sauna and snow room looked awesome, but we were never able to actually partake of it due to other preferences. The Wintergarden Room was so beautiful and the afternoon tea service was very nice. The entertainment team was AWESOME and very personable. Will travel again on Viking in the very near future.
