Our first Viking cruise was on the Danube River. It was great, so we decided to try the Ocean cruise. Good decision. The Viking Sun is a beautiful ship. We did the Homeland tour around the Baltic Sea, visitng many beautiful cities. If you like historic old towns, cobblestone streets, and beautiful mountains this is a great itinerary . Our cabin had plenty of space. The heated bathroom floor was nice. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly every day, even when large numbers of people returned from a tour. Dining was a pleasure. The service was very good. If you don't take the special spirits package, you can still ask for a different wine. Usually they offer a house white or red, but I prefer a rose and was given it when I asked. The food was excellent. The World Cafe had excellent selections as a buffet. We were able to make 2 resevations for the Chef's Table and Manfridi's the first day on board in addition to the one we made prior to boarding. We enjoyed the entertainment in the Theather. Port talks were helpful, but you can also watch them on the TV. The music shows were very enjoyable. We enjoyed all the tours but a highlight was the Home visit in Stavanger. It was great to visit with a local. We almost did not get to do it. Only 10 people go, one morning & one afternoon visit. Our afternoon visit was cancelled because not enough people booked it. They told us we could go to the meeting spot for the morning group and if someone did not show up we could go, Got very luckly that 2 people did not show up and we were added to the group. They will also wait list you if it is a few days in advance and someone cancels. So don't give up if there is a tour you really want. I would aslo recommed the Flam train tour in Norway. A long day but worth it for the beautiful views. Read Less

We have cruised Viking previously( River Cruises ) and found Viking to be professionally run excursions. This trip was no exception. We enjoy the individual attention afforded to us on the River Cruises and Viking has made Ocean cruising more enjoyable by having only 900 passengers on a ship that could accommodate many more. Viking Sun was a beautiful ship with plenty of options for us passengers. The food offerings and entertainment were exceptional. The itinerary was spectacular with once in a lifetime views. The staff on board were very attentive to our needs and very professional. The ship had many places to relax and were always available to passengers. The entertainment was excellent. Each night there was something different and appealing to different tastes. The main dining room and the specialty restaurants were well staffed and the quality of food was exceptional. The overall experience was beyond expectation and I would recommend this itinerary and this ship to anyone in the future. Read Less

This cruise was chosen because of the cities visited and the length. Overall the boat was terrific, the food great, the room service sensational. We enjoyed the infinity pool everyday as the weather was beautiful. The shore excursion were good with some being better than others. I felt Swedens excursion could use an update. The staff tried its best to get my luggage on board, but alas I had no luggage for the whole trip. except for my carry on. I am not sure wether the fault was with the airline, Air Canada, or Viking. The upside was that I got what clothes I had cleaned free of charge. The spa experience was terrific and the entertainment was excellent. We also experience the medical facilities as my sister had a kidney stone issue. All in all the trip is one I will always remember for the good and the unfortunate. Read Less

Having previously taken a Viking River Cruise in China and had a very positive experience we try - glad we did. The Viking Sun was the nicest ship we have sailed. Previously we have cruised on Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Renaissance (Tahiti and out of business) eight cruises in total. This ship got it right in every respect. We ended up in a Junior Suite, cabin 6023. I was anxious that the location near the elevator may have been a problem, I called and was assured the cabins were almost sound proof - they were right. We had so much storage in terms of drawers that we did not even use them all. Lots of hanging space with a side for full length and another for full length. The bathroom had double sinks and a large shower. Heated floors and towel rack which were too hot had to cut them off but there is a control. Adequate water pressure and plenty of hot water with great fixtures in the shower. Two large televisions in the suite we only used the one in the sitting area which was very spacious with sofa, two chairs, coffee table and credenza/storage. The balcony was adequate, we had lunch there one day. No recliners just two chairs and a table. There were power curtains on the sliding doors and a second window floor to ceiling. Also a set of curtains between the sitting area and the bedroom were also powered. Mini bar was included in the price and stocked every day. Had a nice bottle of champagne on our welcome. Also champagne and a large cake on our anniversary! One nice perk is laundry and dry cleaning are included with the Junior Suite. FYI if you order same day service there is a charge I think 50%. Service was reliable. Cabin attendants were very good - friendly, thorough and service oriented. They worked in teams of two and really did a great job each day including de-wrinkling the bed spread and pillows each day. One "negative" for me was that drinks are included with meals, mini-bar is included as is room service 24 hours a day, but if you order a soft drink after 2:00pm when the dining room is closed you pay for it unless you do the Silver Spirits package - we do not drink much and chose not to do it. Mini Bar and room service were fine - just inconvenient and kind of silly since I could get it free in my room. One big negative was the excursions. Overall the excursions were lacking in terms of quality of information, amount of free time and audio equipment. To be clear the equipment which is stored in your cabin and you have to bring with you each time works fine but the guides in general were not familiar with it. Maybe new and over time will be fine. Had three solid guides Lisse in Copenhagen on the Pre-Cruise Extension, our tour to Lubek was very good and the tour to Voldendom the Windmills. We are photographers and really wanted more free time - in general we had 3-=45 minutes. Also you need to pay attention to the excursion descriptions when they say moderate trust that it is a bit strenuous. We had people with walkers and a broken leg trying to manage the excursions - felt bad for them because it was very challenging over cobbles, hills etc. Be honest for yourself and the others on the excursion. One thing that struck us on the cruise was that it never felt crowded. No matter where we went it was relaxing and pleasant. We dined at the World Cafe most evenings. Buffet was excellent in terms of choice and quality of food. Would recommend they place cream cheese by bagel toaster to avoid having to back track all the way to the first station from the last but otherwise really good food. Prime Rib was excellent. Manfredi's Italian was very good - I will say it was the loudest experience on the ship.It was full when we dined at 7:30pm and loud. by the time we left around 9;00 it was quiet. Explorers Lounge was a nice space as was the Winter Garden Tea Room! The cast for the entertainment was very good. Fun and friendly entertainers with themes that connected with the audience, Beatles, Abba, etc. The pre and post cruise extensions were not worth it for the money. The pre cruise in Copenhagen we stayed at the Radisson Blu Royal - great location and a beautiful view. Room was Euro 4 star not luxurious but adequate. The Movenpick in Amsterdam was not as good. Long walk to get to anything about a mile to the Central Train Station. There are other hotels closer into where everything is that they should have used. Hotel was tired and a bit dirty in the hallways. Room was adequate. Overall an excellent experience! Read Less

We decided to take another cruise (3rd) with Viking because our friends, who we met on our first Viking river cruise a few years ago, invited us to join them. We thought it would be interesting to compare the ocean cruise Viking had to offer to our two previous Viking river experiences and to other ocean cruises we had taken. The ship was gorgeous and comfortable. The staff onboard were attentive, pleasant and extremely professional. The dining rooms were all excellent. Manfredi's was the most desirable dining option (in our opinion) but in very high demand. It was difficult to secure a reservation to eat there once onboard. FYI, Viking grants those who have spent the most money on their cabin priority access to dining reservations and excursions. That may be the case with other cruise lines as well. Most of the dining was set up for couples. We travelled with friends, but saw a few couples who looked at our group longingly. They seemed interested in meeting new people but the dining room tables which are mostly set up for two people didn't facilitate that. We enjoyed our cruise but found that the included excursions were not anywhere near as impressive or enjoyable as those provided on the river cruises. Some of the extra excursions were disappointing as well. Overall, however, the beautiful ship and attentive staff made this an enjoyable trip. Read Less

I have always wanted to see the Fjords and I think the best way to do them is on a ship. But we had never cruised before as we didn’t fancy being on a large, glitzy ship. We saw Jane McDonalds programme on the Viking Sky and loved the decor. The vast majority of the passengers were American. Although I believe there were a few Brits on board, we never found them. The ship is beautifully light and spacious. It was easy to find quiet corners. The cabin was large and very well appointed, with an excellent shower room. The bed was extremely comfortable and the cabin was very quiet. The steward did a great job of cleaning. The restaurants were all excellent with a wide choice of menus. The staff throughout the ship were unfailingly friendly, helpful and professional. The optional (paid for) shore excursions were very expensive and not, in our opinion, good value for money. But I have one major complaint. The ship was freezing due to excessive air conditioning. For The first half of the cruise we had cold and very wet conditions and, having been on shore excursions and getting cold and wet, the last thing you want is to board a freezing cold ship. Even when the weather improved all the public areas were subject to blasts of extremely cold air. We complained to guest services, restaurant managers and anybody who would listen. All the passengers we chatted to agreed with us. Surely one doesn’t expect to have to wear outdoor jackets or warm sweaters in the restaurants? So, to sum up, a fabulous ship in every way apart from the temperature. It really spoiled our enjoyment. Read Less

We selected this Viking Ocean Cruise due to its extended Homelands Itinerary. Other lines do many of the same ports, but they don't do them all in one shot the way Viking does. We have done multiple River Cruises with Viking, so we were not apprehensive about trying the Ocean Cruising side with the company. Overall it was very good, albeit pricey. So, when comparing this itinerary to other lines, you get more ports, included and quality excursions, included wine and beer, and exceptional service. That being said, we have done other lines cruising Europe, and will continue to do so keeping an open mind. Viking is very good, but we have had just as much fun and enjoyment on those other lines. We primarily select a line for a unique itinerary, after that, if itineraries are same, we compare cost, value and quality. Viking is a more subdued experience with an older demographic. We are on the early age-side of their demographic, so sometimes we want more excitement, loud music, and some younger folks around us freely enjoying themselves rather than reading on a quiet deck with sipping a glass of something. The on board experience was excellent, food, service, entertainment. Everything just lovely. The Eidfjord Norway stop is scenic however there is nothing to do there except an excursion. There were no shops, nothing. Unfortunately the Viking included excursions have sometimes 29 people assigned to one guide and in the more crowded stops, its hard to enjoy since you spend more time trying to keep up with the guide. In Stockholm the guide had almost 50 people (the whole bus) and it was crowded. We booked a two day tour with TJ Travel in St. Petersburg with a maximum of 16 in a nice van. Our guide Victoria was absolutely terrific and its a good deal less expensive than the optional Viking tour. For a two day stop, Viking had only one half day included tour and you cannot leave the ship there without an escort that has a visa waiver status. We stopped in Iceland on the way over from New York. We arrived to the hotel about 7am and the rooms were not going to be available until 3pm. We had to sleep in the lobby of the hotel. Fortunately we did get rooms around noon but it just ruined our first day and the hotel is some distance from town. There's a shuttle until 5pm but then you need to walk 30 minutes or so or take a cab which is about $20 USD each way. VERY disappointed with Viking for this treatment. The organized excursions were really good but we lost a day for a relatively expensive stop. The cabin was very nice, the staff on board was outstanding. The food was superb in all dining locations. Their entertainment was good and their seminars informative and well done. Read Less

We like this trip itinerary. Ship was very nice and clean. Every restaurant food was great. Room service was fantastic. We love spa. This is our first ocean cruise with Viking, we did River cruise with Viking before. We thought this ship is very small, once we arrived at port Viking sun is pretty big size and inside there are everything what we need and everywhere is enough spaces. Excursion of each port event are nice organized for city tour and proper duration for walking tour. Weather was much nicer than what we expected in May, every 8 country we were traveling sunshine and good temperature. Most of the top, we like no casino on ship and no children around. All staffs of ship are very kindness and knowledgeable what should know about their duty. I had bad experience with one of lady at front desk(passenger service desk) otherwise every where every staff are wonderful . We enjoyed very much this "Viking home land" itenaries and we wish stayed more over night at St. Petersburg. Read Less
