We had previously cruised with Viking in 2017 on a river cruise from Paris to Normandy. The service, excursions, food, camaraderie, and outdoor dining was very relaxing for us, and educational. We still talk about what we saw and learned. A Viking flyer sent to us detailed their new ocean cruises and brand-new ships. Their ratings were right at the top of the chart. We signed up and were truly happy with the congeniality, sincere friendliness (to include the usually behind-the-scenes crew) and stress free sailing. Many of their crew would remember our names to boot. All areas of the Sun were never crowded during both day and night activities. Alcoves to sit and talk without the din of crowds of other passengers was very welcome. No one pushing drinks constantly around the pool areas. What will keep us coming back is the absence of any photographers, no casino, and, sorry grandpa-ma, NO KIDS. The ship is QUIET. We are seniors, and the mega-ships being launched lately hold no appeal for us. Food is plentiful and healthful, but we avoid packing on the pounds by not ever taking the ship's elevators and walking extensively each day. Not many others did, as we usually had the walking deck to ourselves! Viking is the best value out there, bar none. Sorry again, no water slides! Read Less

First time on an Ocean Cruise...we are In our 60's and did not want to be on a cruise the size of a city. Viking is the best way to start and or finish. Will only take Viking as it is the BEST!!! Future booking are inevitable. We want to sail the world with Viking!!! All of the excursions were so informative and thought/organized so well. On board entertainment nightly and the bar service was grand. All on board service was from breakfast/lunch/dinner was outstanding. I just can't say enough of the service, meals, onboard ship persons and utmost service from all. Spa, pools and on board amenities are a huge factor on why we booked along with only 940 guests on the ship. Food and dining was so fabulous with lobster, Peking duck, shrimp, steaks/filets, fresh vegetables and amazing deserts....so much variety that you can choose from. You will never be disappointed with a Viking Ocean Cruise. Book today....enjoy what life has to offer! You will love it!!! Read Less

The Viking Sun is an absolutely gorgeous ship, furnished with Norwegian taste which is sleek and elegant in nautical blue and silver-beige. The public spaces are large and comfortable and beautiful, and don't seem crowded because there are so many of them. Free access to high-end spa featuring Nordic options like a heated mineral water spa, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and snow room. The crew knows how to show you a good time and make it seem effortless. Food was extraordinary, with several restaurants to choose from, and menus that varied every day featuring local items like tapas while in Spain. Room service is also available 24 hours. And the excursions were managed efficiently and hosted by the best local tour guides. There is an included excursion in every port, plus many optional ones to choose from. Being in the Mediterranean in the off season was delightful. My friends commented that our photos showed well because they sights weren't overcrowded like they are in the summer months. The cruise was exquisite in every way. Read Less

The cruise is advertised as off season which is great. The weather is still good and the crowds are significantly smaller. Only disadvantage is shorter daylight hours. It is a very busy cruise with no sea days and lots to see and enjoy. The service on Viking is always excellent. We enjoyed four dinners in the included alternate dining. The Chef's table is definitely a great experience with very tasty menus. They always have a wide variety of shore experiences which are also very informative and of good value. My only complaint is you are supposed to get an included tour , yet they do fill up and sometimes are not available which I feel is false advertising. The other suggestion I would have is schedule the tours so you could do both an included tour and an option tour if desired. The resident historian was great. If I had only had him in high school , I would have learned and retained a lot more about history. Read Less

This was my first venture across the Atlantic. My husband was in service and had visited some of the countries 50 years ago. When I suggested this cruise, he was interested to see what, if anything, had changed. We chose a pre cruise extension in Rome which was amazing. We spent two days exploring with visits to the Colosseum and Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, shopping and restaurants. Our hotel was convenient to everything. The major positive of this experience was the fact that Viking was so organized, their employees very gracious, and the follow-up phone call from Vic was unexpected. We did not have one complaint about anything. We truly enjoyed our stewards - Viveck and Rinaldi (I hope I spelled their names correctly). We got to meet and enjoy the company of the entertainers: Tina, Shaun, Josh and Amelia. Truly exceptional voices and so friendly. Overall the entertainment was unbelievable including Minky G and her guitar. Enjoyed talking with Alex in Torshavn, and Suzannah in the SPA. The dining experience was beyond expectation. The tour guides on the shore excursions were so informative which enhanced the shore excursions' experiences. The people we met during our free time in the different countries were so nice to us. And of course, our ship, The Viking Sun, was fabulous. We did a one day post extension in Paris which was so memorable. While we got to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night, we were disappointed that we didn't have time to experience the Louvre except by night by taking photographs. I wish we could have done two days in Paris. My husband's sister and her husband have traveled several times with Viking River Cruises. They praised Viking for their attentiveness and graciousness. We would like to also "pay it forward" with our compliments to Viking, the crew, and the whole fabulous experience. Read Less

We were on the ship for 14 days. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed the cruise very much. We never felt like we were crowded. The public spaces were lovely and our cabin was a nice size with an amazing amount of storage. We were given an upgrade to the Penthouse Veranda suite which was a wonderful surprise. The mini bar was generously refreshed daily and the linens were always crisp. We wanted to see Lisbon, Valencia and Lucca so chose this trip. It was very easy getting on and off the ship, there were no tenders which was fantastic. You could walk into most towns or Viking would provide a shuttle. Viking also provides included tours in all ports. Many ships do not. We did pay for a few extra tours. There were many to choose from. Unfortunately because of the protests in France we couldn't drive into Aix-in-Provence but we understand that those things happen when traveling. The Chef's Table is high end food cooked perfectly and presented beautifully with wine pairings. There is no cost for the special dining rooms which is unlike many other ships. We found that if we didn't have a reservation, if there was room you could be seated. The World Cafe buffet had many fresh and good tasting offerings for breakfast lunch and dinner. The Pool Grill had a surf and turf night that was delicious and the chocolate buffet in the beautiful Wintergarten was stunning. Although we did not try the free sauna and snow room other guests raved about it. Read Less

We wanted to see some of the Med coast and to visit Tuscany and were happy with prior Viking River cruises so we gave it a shot. Weather was cool but not really chilly and the seas were basically calm except for part of one evening. Very efficient meet up in Barcelona airport - certainly not a real busy place at about 8:00 am. Boarded the ship efficiently a little before the 11:00 am access to cabin on deck seven. Hung out in Mamsen's until cabin opened. Very relaxed and server was very pleasant. Cabin ready on time and was clean. Steward was very nice and showed us the features. He continued to be very helpful through out the voyage.. Liked the convenience of deck seven - very few cabins and virtually no traffic in the hallway. Very easy to get to World Cafe as well as to Explorer Lounge (there is a door from cabin hallway to the port side of the Explorers' Lounge. Liked the PV2 cabin - shower is very nice sized and twin sinks is nice. Having two TVs on ein bed area and one in sitting area, separated by very nice room divider curtain was very nice. Disembarking for excursions was handled very smoothly and without too much of a wait. Read Less

This was the perfect itinerary for my wife and I. We've always wanted to see the this part of the world and we were dying for a chance to experience a Viking Ocean Cruise. We've previously been on Viking River Cruises but never before been on an ocean cruise with any cruise line. Our experience leads us to conclude that Viking has successfully carried over their brand experience from river cruises to their ocean cruises. I must say the wait staff in the dining venues were outstanding and friendly. That was one of the key elements that caused us to look forward to dining each evening. And one day, we were onboard for lunch and had a great experience eating at the Wintergarden Pool Bar. We we each had absolutely fabulous cheeseburgers. When someone stopped to ask if he could get us anything, I said, "You know, I'd really like a milk shake but I know you don't have those on the menu." He responded, "Well, let me see what I can do." We were up on the 7th deck. He went all the way down to the bar on the 2nd deck and had the bar tender there make TWO milk shakes...one for me and one for my wife. We had no expectation of that level of service. Much to our surprise, he presented them to us. What a delight! And I can't say enough about our cabin steward, Jaya. He was absolutely outstanding in his attentiveness to our desires and kept our cabin impeccable. Read Less

We went with our son, daughter in law, & two grand children. They had never been to the Mediterranean. It was a great trip that they could afford, and everything was inclusive. The dining on board was exquisite. The entertainment & excursions were great. The ship was well appointed, and you didn't feel crowded. The service & crew were exceptional. This was our third Viking cruise, and needless to say they are great people. Our son and wife had a very enjoyable cruise. It was especially great , since their grown children enjoyed it immensely. It was our son & wife's second Viking cruise. Everything went very smoothly once we were aboard the ship. We had airline delays due to weather & mechanical problems. Flying is not as easy as it used to be; it has become stressful. But the Viking cruise definitely distressed us all. We highly recommend the Viking cruise line! Read Less

The ship is beautiful and the public area is plentiful and tastefully done. The spa area is excellent, I wish I have more time to explore the spa facility. The port Sete was not originally on the itinerary and it was not an interesting port for a stop. Shuttle service at Florence was not up to par. We were left at the bus stop for over an hour in the rain and we never received an apology for the mess up. The ride should have come every 30 minutes. On the positive note, the staff on board are excellent, not only did they carry out their duties perfectly, they are also very good in anticipating the guest's need and offer alternatives and help without being asked. The laundry facility is great, I just wish there's more of them, maybe one on each floor. We also had a mixed up in the reservation restaurant. We had to wait for a long time before we were taken care of. Read Less

We choose this cruise because of the routing, and this time of year for the lighter crowds of the off season and cooler weather. We were pleased with both the weather and lack of crowds. Also everything was decorated for Christmas which made it even more beautiful. Over all both the tours provided and the extra excursions we purchased were excellant. However, on the Night of Flamenco in Barcelona, I felt the venue was a little too commercial. The dancing itself was excellant, but the tapas and sangria were mediocre at best. Except for the ham, cheese and olives, the rest of the tapas were not good, the sangria was not authentic and the creme brulee was burnt. Also, because we booked a morning tour for the Monseratt Abby, we could not also do the included tour of Barcelona, they overlapped by 15 minutes. It seems like they could have scheduled that better. Our pre and post extensions in Madrid and Rome were very nice. In Madrid there was an included 1/2 day tour of the city, excellent tour guide. In Rome however there was no included tour, I found this to be inconsistant. The food on the ship was excellent, fresh, delicious available. The Restaurant, their main dinning room, was order off the changing menu, and freshly prepared with service equal to any fine dining establishment. The World Cafe, the morning noon and night buffet was fresh, and delicious, with some prepared to order foods also. All of the other restaurants etc. were additionally as good, although, the lasagne in Manfredi's left something to be desired. Our Silver beverage package was worth every penny, (not expensive) it was basically an open bar the whole time on the ship. We are not heavy drinkers, but it was nice to have a cocktail or two before dinner or after an excursion. I loved that they charged us a flat fee daily, (15.00) for tips for everyone, without having to dig out cash everytime you turned around. The staff on the Ship were courteous, efficient, and friendly. The embarking and disembarking were efficient and easy. Never waiting, very organized. Over all a truly wonderful experience. We chose the Mediterranean Odyssey 12-day cruise because of the itinerary offered. All of the ports were cities/countries we wanted to visit. Our cabin was large, impeccable and very comfortable. Everyone from our cabin steward, guest services, bar and restaurant servers, etc. treated us like royalty. We enjoyed the opportunity to dine casually or fine dining in the other restaurants. We had a great selection of entrees and wines from the region we had visited that day. We also enjoyed the diversified evening entertainment and music. Our shore excursions were included in the cost of the cruise and were well planned and on-time. My only complaint is that sometimes we didn’t have much time after the tours to explore and shop or eat as we had to shuttle back to the ship. We enjoyed the intimacy of cruising on a small ship and would highly recommend VIKING for your travels. VIKING is top notch from embarkation to disembarkation! Read Less

We arrived two days prior to embarkation and explored Venice. Spent another two days in Barcelona, after debarkation. Both embarkation and debarkation went very smoothly - best of all other cruise lines we have sailed on. We loved the cabin (explorer suite) and the great service provided by the ship's staff. This was the second Viking cruise we have been on. We are totally sold on Viking and their great service. The meal service, at all the different locations was excellent. We like the fact that it is not pretentious and that they don't "nickel and dime" you with side charges. Even though we sailed during the "rainy" season in the Mediterranean, we were very fortunate with only one rainy day on shore and one at sea. We also like the smaller sized ships which makes it more personable. We already made plans to cruise the Norwegian Fjords in 2020. We look forward to future cruises, both river and ocean with Viking! Al-in-all this was an excellent value for the quality of service provided. We have already booked another trip and chose to try a river cruise after talking with seasoned Viking travelers. My wife and I chose this cruise because it includes a tremendous opportunity to see a lot of Art Galleries and Museums as well as locations that are historically and socially significant. As has been our experience with all of our other Viking cruises, all facets of travel - from arrival to departure and everything in between - were handled beautifully by the Viking organization. The setting was elegant, and the people were incredible! Our cabin was roomy and well kept. The food was delicious and plentiful. Vikings chefs really know how to cook a variety of food styles and can please the most picky eaters. The specialty restaurants offer an elegant setting to try new dishes, and the staff in them are friendly and personable. The entertainment was fun - really enjoyed the classical music in the Living Room in the afternoons and evenings as well as in Wintergarden during tea time. We found the service to be second to none. The included excursions were fun and informative, and the optional excursions offered a wide variety of experiences you don't find on other lines. All things considered, we can't wait for our next trip on Viking! Read Less

We spent a few extra days in Athens which I highly recommend before settling sail. Going in November really worked to our advantage as we had beautiful weather and much less crowds. We had been to Venice before, but had we not, a few extra days at the end of the cruise would have also been nice. While we have done several Viking river cruises, this was our first ocean cruise. The ship is beautiful, love that everyone has a veranda cabin! The cabin was roomy, plenty of storage space, the bathroom is also a great size and has the heated floor. Our friends were in the cabin next door, so our Housekeeper pushed the veranda separation panel back, giving the for of us one big veranda - nice! The public spaces are beautifully done, and we absolutely LOVED the Explorers Lounge! The views are floor to ceiling all the way around, and since we were sailing in November, the fireplace made a perfect place to end the day. While this ship is obviously larger than the river ships, it still manages to give you a small ship feel. The service was exceptional, as always, and everyone delivered excellence at every turn. Loved all the ports except Corfu. That stop did nothing for me, especially compared to all the other stops. We did the included shore excursion in every port and the were great. We still had plenty of time to play in that city afterwards. We went to a couple of the entertainment offerings and a couple of the enrichment offerings. They did not seem as good or relevant as on the river ships - that was a bit disappointing. Overall - an exceptional cruise experience, as compared to other lines I have used in the past. We wanted to visit Croatia and we had not spent much time in Italy so the pre-cruise stay in Tuscany with the 8-day cruise from Venice to Athens was great fit. It did not disappoint! We were greeted at Florence airport and comfortably transported to Resort Villa La Veronica in Greve en Chianti where we met up with several other couples. Host Anita was like a mother hen making sure all needs were met. After three enjoyable days in Tuscany we were delivered to Venice and escorted to the port for easy embarkation. The cruise itself was fabulous. The food at every restaurant is like the best in any city. The Chef's Table was not to my husband's liking, but that is just that he is not that fancy in his tastes, but I loved it. We did not go to the more nightclub type room, but the entertainment each evening in the upstairs Explorer's Lounge was fabulous. We also took advantage of the spa for massages and I had my hair washed and blown out which was a lovely time saver. We went for the extra excursions into the countrysides in Croatia and Montenegro. In retrospect I would have preferred to have spent more time more time in Split and Dobrovnik with the included tour. The optional excursions were great, but more for those who have previously spent time in those cities. The Highlights of Montenegro tour was very worthwhile, with a hair raising ride that was actually one of the highlights of the trip. We booked another trip while on board. We went couple of days earlier to explore Barcelona. Embankment & disembarkment was seamless. Staff were courteous & very helpful. They couldn’t do enough for you. It’s a beautiful ship, large enough for ocean cruising but small enough to enjoy every aspect of the ship. Loved the gym & the spa pool. The cabins are relatively large compare to other cruise ships. They have all toiletries that you needed. Love the laundry facilities especially having detergent dispensary. ( would have been better if we have someone to show us how to use them though. It was through trial & errors). Dining is amazing, a lot of delectable food, as well as many varieties. Services were excellent with abundance of wine. They did a great job with excursions & leaving us some times to explore if one wants to. The only negative comment from my spouse is that there is no casino. There were no children on board. Don’t think children would like it because there are not a lot of activities for them on board. We’ve booked another cruise with Viking Ocean Cruise in the near future. What we like about this cruise is that the expenses are up front so there is no billing afterward. Therefore, the cost is more but in the end, they work out the same. Great cruise. Read Less

We were anxious to see/compare the Viking smaller ship, ocean cruise with other large ship ocean cruises. We also wanted to compare this venue to Viking's river cruise ships. Turns out these smaller ships are a HUGE plus, and their river cruise ships are a close second. Our ship was always spacious and immaculate everywhere we went. The main dining area food was always excellent, with many fine choices at each meal. Even the pizza was better then in Naples, and their galeto never stops. Three additional private restaurant options were also terrific, and was a nice change of scenery. Service was friendly and very accommodating everywhere you go, from dinning, to cabin, to poolside. Our flight arrived late, so the staff transferring us to the ship started this display of their warm service. Casual, quality, elegance everywhere....perfect! The entertainment was multi talented in their lounges, and the stage shows were outstanding. It was like a condensed Las Vegas! All this while in perfectly comfortable, relaxed settings. Included and optional excursions, were both very enjoyable and varied. The access on/off the ship with ground transportation was all excellent. Every port was a pleasant call, but Monte Carlo, Corfu, and Croatia were outstanding, and left a smile in our hearts. We'll be back on Viking again, but I have a big suggestion. If guests have long flights (> 8 hours), Viking should allow/provide ground transfers to the ship for overnight hotel stays before boarding. No reason to start a cruise exhausted or rushing.
