Originally booked this cruise about 9 months in advance. The main reason was that it was going to spend a day in Havana and we wanted to see Cuba. I had heard nothing but good about Viking's river cruises and they were beginning to break into ocean cruising with new state of the art ships. We are older travelers. The fact that the minimum age was 16 and that these boats do not have Casinos was a twin draw. This was probably the nicest boat we have ever been on keeping in mind that it was brand new (2 months) and this was it's third voyage. We had a junior suite on deck 8. The furnishings throughout this room and the boat were comfortable and impeccable. The gym and spa were something special. Saunas, steam room, hot tubs, cold water buckets and yes an ice room all included. You could lock your locker with your room key. Whole boat was state of the art with free wi-fi. They had art throughout the corridors everywhere. With earbuds provided in the room you could take a walking tour and learn about each piece as you approached it. The overall layout was close to the standard for most ships these days minus the casino. Food in the main dining rooms and the specialty restaurants was better that most with quite the variety. So....why not a 5 star rating instead of 4. About 4-5 months before sailing, Viking was denied a permit to Havana's harbor by Cuba for the dates it wanted. Probably a fierce competition between cruise lines for a limited space. Viking then changed the entire itinerary. They were going to go around to the other side of the island of Cuba to the city of Cienfuegos, stay 3 days in this port and eliminate the other 2 ports we were going to see (Belize and Mexico). Realizing that the reason for most to go was Havana and afraid of a mass exodus, they added a 2 day, overnight excursion to Havana and a separate day trip to Havana along with a variety of others around Cuba. Viking would pick up the tab. No cost whatsoever for any excursions. They also gave you $250 per person in room credit. We thought this might be interesting, did not cancel and booked the overnight excursion to Havana. It was a 4 hour, one-way bus ride. This trip was an blessing and a curse. We saw, did and learned more about Cuba that we would have on a any one day stay in Havana. It was eye opening. Shows at the Tropicana, rides in a convertible 57' Chevy all included. Viking went out of it's way. This trip had to cost. We got to bed at midnight and left at 8 AM. We got back to the ship at 6 PM. Each of us practically kissed the gang plank. The average age on that bus was 60-70. We were beat. Had the boat been closer with say an hour bus ride to Havana Ok, but not 4 hours. Would I go on Viking again.....absolutely........seeing Cuba again......really doubt it. Read Less

1. We chose this cruise because it was going to 4 ports including Havana. Itinerary changes made it considerably less desirable: day in Key West and 3 night stay over in Cienfuegas. Cienfuegas is worth one day. I do not fault Viking for these changes, but it was not the trip we hoped for. 2. We were not docked in port but had a 15-minute tender to Cienfuegas. 3. For reasons unclear, most tours forced you to meet between 6 AM and 8 AM to meet your buses. That meant setting alarms and hurrying through breakfast and morning routines for no apparent reason. 4. Food and services were excellent as always on Viking. Manfreddi's in particular was especially good. Public spaces are beautiful and love the art and Nordic antique collections. Once again, I do not think any of this was Viking's fault, but I would not recommend taking this cruise if it remains the same as when we went. Read Less

We did not explore Miami before this cruise, as we have done this at other times. Both embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly as we booked the airfare with Viking and they cover all the details. The ship was wonderful. Cruising on a smaller ship is always a treat. The itinerary had to be changed from the time we booked to the day we embarked. We were to go to Mexico and Belize on this trip as well as Cuba. Since Viking could not dock in Havana, that changed the time frame and Mexico and Belize were deleted from the itinerary. Viking did have an excursion to Havana with an overnight stay at a 5-star hotel that was free. Very nice excursion with a small walking tour, lunch, dinner at The Tropicana, and breakfast the next day included. On the way back to the ship, we stopped at the Bay of Pigs Museum. Service on Viking is always superb! A trip not to miss! Read Less

My wife and I have always wanted to visit Cuba but for most of our lives it has not been possible for U.S. citizens. When it finally became possible, we jumped on it. We have been on many Viking cruises, both ocean and river. The reason we keep coming back is because Viking is the Rolls Royce of cruise lines. We love everything about Viking and will continue to cruise with them as long as our health allows. We are senior citizens and travel to learn about new places. Viking shore excursions provide us with that opportunity. The food onboard the Viking ships that we have traveled on has been excellent. I always eat too much of it and have to come home and go on a diet until the next cruise. Then I repeast the process all over again. We have traveled with Viking enough that we have become friends with many of the crew members that have been on multiple ships on which we have traveled. Princess Guzman from the Philippines is one crew member that we have enjoyed on several cruises. She is one of those people who remember your name and your usual drinks. She is a real asset for Viking. Read Less

We wanted to see Cuba. And, we were able to get a good view of the city, the countryside, and some of the people. The highlights were primarily three: One, the vintage cars, and our riding to dinner and the Copacapana was so much fun, Two, the owner's suite aboard the ship was TO DIE FOR! Exquisite, luxurious, with the most accomodating crew. We invited a group of CruiseCritic travelers to join us in a "Cabin Crawl", ending up in our remarkable accomodations. The staff provided a butler, hor d'oerves, and a bartender for complimentary drinks, including wine and mixed drinks. They were wonderful. And, Three, the Cruise staff accepted my offer to conduct the inter-denominational church service (I offer and do these on many, many cruise lines; people give them high marks, I understand.) The service was well attended and many really appreciated my willingness to lead it. And ,I appreciated the Cruise Director's willing attitude. Read Less

I wanted to see Cuba and it's turbulent past before the changes of time. The dining experience was excellent.the service personnel always friendly and courteous ....we enjoyed the Chef's Table selection and the Italian choices. My mate liked especially the Market Place Cafe where we had all breakfasts, some lunches and if he could have, dinner. I never surprised me to see the perfectly ironed and starched linens. We were impressed with the seafood fiesta where the tantalizing aromas outdid theglistens selection of superb , especially nordic seafood. The talented Singers and dancers did best to entertain us. The Spanish Guitare marveled at romantic music to dancing and listening. The shore excursions were a big disappointment. I look at the Itinerary, flamingo's in thedistance, a 3-hour of the most uncomfortable boat ride one can imagine , a nonexistent Botanical Garden? The excursion personnel did not a good job in explaining other optionsthat would have been a better use of our time. I regret having missed the opporatunity of a night in Havana, due to insufficient attention and care by Shore Excursions. What Iii really enjoyed was the infinity pool. One late afternoon, not a soul around, the sun was shining over the sparking ocean . From the quiet pool, one can imaginefloating away to infinity. Read Less

I chose this cruise for the combination of Cuba and Viking Ocean. Originally we were suppose to dock in Havana but Viking didn't get docking rights...so the itinnery was changed to Cienfuego. Viking gave us an all inclusive overnight in Havana and free excursions in Cienfuego to compensate us. as well as on board credit. We were a little nervouss because of the change in itinnery and news reports of diplomatic problems. Non of these were an issue while traveling in cuba. All the guides were knowledgeble and friendly The excursions were excellent-beyond expectations and the ship was beyond expectations Ship was elegant, Cabin was attractive, service was also beyond expectations. Wonderful spa experience, wonderful food. Afternoon tea was superb. Felt like a treasured guest...no one was trying to sell us anything This was the most elegant cruise we have been on and we have been cruising for about 50 years. We will definitely cruise with Viking Ocean again..and will rprobably try Viking River Cruises Read Less

Very poor communication during the year-long reservation period about changes in times and places. Excursions were spent riding a bus to get somewhere for a very short rather hurried view of the place. Had a jr suite that was supposed to allow earlier boarding—-had to inquire after original check in and finally allowed to board ahead of some. This jr suite was also to have stocked mini bar with drinks and snacks. We requested wine and were constantly resupplied with liquor and had to call to get corrected. On about the third day we ate some of the snacks—-they were never resupplied. It’s all too bad——we had booked this cruise a year ahead (to get free airfare but that didn’t go away as we were told it would if not booked by a certain date) and were so looking forward to it. I’m very sorry it and Viking were so disappointing and not the top notch cruise I was expecting. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the destination and the value of the cruise - it was offered at a really good rate. The onboard lectures were informative and entertaining, and the shore excursions were likewise. The ship's accommodations were outstanding, and the staff were uniformly helpful and attentive. The cuisine on the ship was fresh and tasty, with a good variety and new items each meal.Viking Cruises handled all the details about getting our visas for Cuba. We also appreciated the many items included in the cost of the cruise, such as wifi, wine with meals, and so forth, because these have been add-ons on for extra cost on cruises we have done on other cruise lines. One disappointment was that the ship docked solely in Cienfuegos, and the trip overland to Havana was long; if there could have been docking on Havana one day, and the other days in Cienfuegos, that would have been preferable.
