We have been home a while from our INTO THE MIDNIGHT SUN cruise on the VIKING SUN in June/July 2019 and it is past time for me to put in a review. This is our second cruise with Viking Ocean, we cruised on the Sea earlier this year in the Caribbean. We actually booked this cruise first and then added the Caribbean one on afterwards. We used Viking Air for this cruise and did well with it. We certainly didn’t have a big cost savings but the efficiency was worth it. Viking representatives met us when we arrived in Bergen and also assisted us to transportation when departing the ship in London. Ground transportation to the airport after the cruise was well handled getting us to Heathrow well in advance of our departure. The entire check-in process was quick and painless without the long lines that are normal for most of the cruises we have been on previously. We were a little early for going to our room, but since we had traveled all night, we hit an early lunch and then went to the room to unpack (yes, our luggage was there already) and a quick nap. Our room stewards, Ranger and Erik, were there introducing themselves and assisting us with any issues we had. Of course, there were no issues; this is Viking! On a sailing with many sea days, they work very hard to ensure they don’t impact guests in cabin time, but get cabins cleaned. Throughout the cruise, Ranger and Erik were wonderful, always helpful, smiling and efficient. They did an outstanding job of ensuring we had everything we needed! We introduced ourselves to Corinne Bach, the cruise director. Corinne was fairly new in the job and it showed, but she did a fine job. We also met Jasna Randelovic, the Beverage Manager, always someone good to know, and Norbert Tesar, the General Manager that first day onboard. We found Norbert to be the most approachable General/Hotel Manager with which we have ever sailed. Jasna and I hit it off and we spoke often, she is very personable and informative. The wait staff onboard the Viking Sun was very efficient and their service was outstanding. Yurii Semenov the Restaurant manager was always available and often pitched right in if the restaurant staff was busy. This cruise was a bit different from our previous one because there were a number of at-sea days. During these at-sea days, there were wonderful luncheon buffets set up in the area by the pool. The food was outstanding. But then again, the food on this ship in all the venues was outstanding and the service impeccable. The Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s (my husband’s favorite) are not to be missed and we took full advantage of both. One morning, we sat with a ‘difficult’ couple and they calmed down talking to us over a delightful breakfast in the restaurant. After that it seemed like the restaurant staff went even more out of their way to say hello and ensure we were extremely well taken care of. We did some of the included tours in Norway, Scotland and London. Most were bus tours, but they were interesting and the guides were wonderful and very knowledgeable. In many instances we had PhD students or equivalent telling us about the area. We also took many optional tours and loved all of them. My husband knocked many items off his bucket list during this cruise. The scenery on the tours and even just from the ship as we sailed the fjords and coastlines was amazing. We learned a great deal about the areas we visited. The onboard lecturers were excellent as well, and my husband made it a practice to go to as many as he could fit in between shore excursions. On the additional sea days, these were always well attended. Those that we missed in person were available on the TV shortly after they completed. We also had a festive “Blue Nose” ceremony onboard when we crossed the Arctic Circle; what fun. We enjoyed the various musical interludes onboard, particularly the choral group in Tromso. The entire staff from the Captain on down worked hard to ensure our trip was enjoyable. We had a wonderful time! Read Less

We’ve been on Viking river cruises and thoroughly enjoyed them, so we decided to try a Viking ocean cruise. We picked the Midnight Sun cruise starting from Bergen, Norway - then up the coast and into the Arctic Circle, then over to the Shetland and Orkney Islands, Edinburg Scotland and finally London (Greenwich) England because the itinerary sounded exciting. What a great cruise experience. Be sure to be up and awake to see Gerainger Fjord as the ships navigates it’s way in. Be sure to visit Mamsen’s for a Norwegian waffle with fresh fruit and Brunost cheese on top. Viking does it right - great sights, food and service - and the crew was nicer than any other cruise line we’ve ever been on before. We were on the cruise July 4th and they put out a feast that was over the top. A food presentation like nothing we’d seen before. When we crossed the Arctic Circle there was a ceremony to initiate new members of the “Order of the Blue Nose” - and we joined by taking a plunge in the icy pool and then kissing the fish - after which they put a glob of blue stuff (frosting?) on our nose - making us official members. We often had dinner in the specialty restaurants - The Chef’sTable and Manfredi’s. Both were very good - but the food was different but just as good in the main dining room and the World Cafe- so no need to feel you are missing out if you don’t make arrangements to visit the speciality restaurants. Throughly enjoyed all the events the ship had offered. Read Less

We wanted to return to Norway and also to experience Viking Ocean Cruises after reading the wonderful reviews. This itinerary was a great combination of both new ports and return to favorite locations. This trip lived up to our expectations. We especially valued the "grown up" ambiance of Viking Ocean ships. There were many quiet locations to read or play games or even work on a jigsaw puzzle. We could find the peace and quiet we relish while at sea. After a number of cruises we are no longer interested in casinos, hordes of people, children running around, or the frenetic busy-ness of many cruise ships. Our cabin was very comfortable. We appreciated the balcony, even though some of the days were too chilly to sit outside. We were above the Arctic Circle, after all. But we loved the views even on the colder days. We did find that there was a little less storage space than on some ships. The bathroom was awesome. It was such a treat to have a full-size bathroom and shower area rather than the cramped cubicles on many ships. The service and attention to detail was exceptional throughout the ship. The staff was friendly and accommodating and did their jobs well. Even the public bathrooms were meticulously clean, and even had the sounds of bird song as a bonus. The entertainment and on-board activities were everything we needed. Great performers--nice "young" kids who were very friendly and approachable around the ship. I felt like I wanted to take them home with me. The greeting and service on arrival at the airport was wonderful. The staff went out of their way to take care of us and our baggage. Embarkation was easy and smooth, which we really appreciated after a very long flight. Our only complaint was probably regarding the dining rooms. We found the tables to be very close together which made it quite difficult for us to have a private conversation. Also the acoustics of the dining rooms were "loud." Sounds and conversations from other guests and the wait staff became very noisy and reverberated through the rooms because of all of the hard surfaces. We utilized the buffet most of the time because we found it to be more pleasant. The selection of food was varied and delicious. We now consider Viking Ocean to be our cruise line of choice and we would love to sail with them again. Read Less

My husband and I so enjoyed our Viking river cruise from Paris to Normandy last December, we decided to splurge on a 15 ocean adventure aboard the Viking Sun. We weren't disappointed! Accommodations, food, service, and tours were excellent. Ship was immaculate, and shows and other entertainment, fabulous. Ship's band and singers played an amazing variety of music for listening, and best of all, dancing! What can we say about the sensational food aboard the Viking Sun? OK...my husband's doctor just told him to lose the 10 pounds he gained on both the cruises. We really appreciated that (good) wine and beers were complimentary at lunch & supper. Yup, it was easy to over-indulge well-made food almost all day and well into the evening! Most interesting ports in northern Norway, Scotland, and London. Included tours were extremely good with wonderful, informative guides. We can hardly wait to be able to book another Viking cruise! Read Less

The cruise was FANTASTIC. Best cruise of our 17 cruises to date. The scenery was SPECTACULAR along the Norwegian Fjords. Visiting the northernmost point of Europe at 71 degrees north was a thrill. Visiting Scotland and London was equally as exciting. The Viking Sun is a VERY well managed ship. the crew was VERY friendly and professional. The ship was spotlessly clean and the food was well above our Viking expectations. The itinerary kept us constantly in awe of the beauty of the Norway coast and the British Isles. During the cruise we took 7 of our 9 tours as the included tours and felt like we saw everything and had wonderful experiences with very knowledgeable and friendly guides. Our two special tours were above and beyond for cities we have been to before (Edinburgh and London). But the regular tours were above expectations. While the first look at cost of traveling Viking appears to be higher than other cruise lines, you must take into account that you get (at no extra charge): and include tour in each port, Viking Air transport to/from airport, wine/beer with meals, specialty restaurants, soft drinks and cookies between meals, mini-bar snacks in our room, 4pm high tea, the spa, and lectures on the cultures and areas we were visiting and this was all with 5-star service and professionalism. Basically, it included EVERYTHING. Read Less

We chose this cruise (Viking Homelands) because it offered us the opportunity to visit each of the Scandinavian countries and St. Petersburg. We arrived two days early to have extra time to explore Stockholm - we could have used more time to do it justice! Note that we did this on our own, not through Viking. It was much less expensive and we stayed at the same hotel. It was a quick 5 minute taxi ride to the ship.At the end of the tour we took the renowned train from Bergen, Norway to Oslo and then stayed an extra day to enjoy the sights. There was a wide range of excursions and they were all interesting and well organized. All but one of the guides were exceptional. The ship is well laid out, beautifully designed and immaculately clean. We ate in all the restaurants except the Captain's Table and found each to offer delicious food and an appropriate ambience. We made it to most of the Afternoon Tea gatherings - a nice touch. We especially appreciated that in The Restaurant, we could choose whether we wanted a table alone or one to share. We often chose the option to share a table, as it provided an easy way to meet interesting new people! We took the tour of the Spa the first day so we understood all it had to offer at no charge, and used it almost every day. (The hot tub is a great way to end each day of touring!) We had three massages between the two of us and they were excellent. There is a launderette on every deck!!!!! There are four washer/dryer combinations. They are easy to use and automatically provide detergent. This made it possible to pack for two weeks in one suitcase, for free! The talks were informative. Unfortunately, the preview of the next day's stop was scheduled for the middle of the dinner hour (6:30pm), which resulted in too many people showing up for dinner at 7:15pm. I imagine the various kitchens and wait staff didn't appreciate the crowds any more than we did! (It was a disappointment to offer that feedback and be told there was no other time feasible. I had suggested that they offer it via the TV in the room, so people could watch it at their leisure.) The staff is exceptional. Everyone I met spoke to me and did everything possible to assist. The senior leadership were visible and friendly and provided a personal thank you or questions to every piece of feedback offered on their survey. The entertainment was very good. The six crew members who sang and danced did a terrific job. Note - you really don't need local currency at the destinations. Most restaurants - and public rest rooms! - will take (and many prefer) a credit card over cash. Many will also accept Euros. Read Less

This ship is beautiful and always spotless. We have been on about 95 cruises, many different cruise lines and ships .I usually do not write reviews, but after reading a scathing review by someone who was on this ship for 3 months in Feb. 2019, I felt a few points should be mentioned. This person complained about everything, especially the staff, we had some issues but, we ALWAYS treat people with respect and never talk down to anyone. We departed the Viking Sun 5 days ago, I find it difficult to believe we were on the same ship. One morning we had breakfast in the Restaurant and the service for us was very slow. We kept getting coffee and danish but no entree until I spoke "nicely" to the head waiter(Tony), he immediately went into the kitchen to get our food.Tony kept apologizing and said this should never happen. Later that afternoon we went back to our room and on our table was a bottle of sparkling wine and 4 delicious chocolate covered strawberries. There was also a card apologizing for the bad breakfast service.Later at dinner I saw Tony again and shook his hand and thanked him, we always had great service after that. The food on this ship is not excellent all the time but, all the staff is, from the servers to the ladies in Guest services. This cruse is actually called Homelands and was 14 days.We loved our Penthouse veranda, and all the beautiful public spaces, this ship is a pleasure to sail on. I just wish we had more than 1 sea day.Cruise director Corrine Bach is a greatly talented person and also very nice. Read Less

We had taken a "Baltic cruise" in 2008 (on Princess cruise line) but wanted an opportunity to enjoy Norway prior to repeating a visit to the northern capitals. We are not disappointed at all, partly due to the smaller size of the boat (900), but also we did the pre-tour in Norway. We had the opportunity to revisit Oslo and particularly enjoyed the Vigelandparken. We then boarded a train to cross Norway to Bergen for a further 2 days. Also we had an opportunity to enjoy fjords, and other Norwegian ports prior to heading for the Baltic. The weather was excellent, with calm seas, warm temperatures and sunny days. The included short excursions were excellent. And the Viking hospitality on board was amazing as usual. The food was exceptional with highlights of reindeer, and tuna. We met with the chef who was Canadian and clearly thoughtful about portions size, and low-fat/sugar diets. We asked for low-fat yoghurt and it was delivered at the next port! This was our first trip on the Ocean cruise liner, and while excellent for certain destinations like this cruise, we still like the river cruises for most of our travels. We have enjoyed them previously with Viking in Egypt, Amsterdam to Budapest, and the Duore River. All highly recommended. Read Less

This was our second Viking Ocean cruise and we had our first cruise with Viking on the Amsterdam to Budapest river cruise in 2014. Needless to say we love Viking! The crew is always outstanding and the food is great. There are always interesting tours and excursions available to suit everyone. The embarkation and disembarkation went flawlessly and as always the crew was ever helpful. We had the same level of cabin on both ocean cruises, the deluxe veranda and it is perfect for us. Our steward was fantastic and our room was spotless. We would travel with Viking any time and hope to do so again in the future. We especially love that there are no children and no casinos or water slides on Viking ships and the size of the ship is really great. We also love the free laundry on the ocean vessels. There isn't anything we would change. Please continue the wonderful service. Read Less

We mainly wanted to see what each place had to offer and decide if we wished to return to spend more time and explore. Some of the shore excursions were already booked so we did miss out on a few that we had really wanted. The ports using tenders were a bit cumbersome and time consuming. The ship was wonderful, cabin large and inviting and the dining was excellent with more than enough choices. We most enjoyed the Explorers lounge with the entertainment of guitar player Valentino. The pool and sauna area is also a wonderful feature along with the spa and gym. The service as always was excellent with all crew members being friendly, efficient at their jobs and going the extra mile. We took this cruise because we felt this cruise went to a lot of different places we wanted to see. The tours were all good, except that my husband lost 1 of his hearing aids 3rd day out. So, he had some trouble hearing things throughout the cruise. We were quite satisfied with everything except Blues Lounge. Hardly anyone ever went and stayed there. The music was way to loud, it was not good danceable music, and was always very cold in there. We like to dance, and certainly not at 11 pm at night at a Disco either. They had another band play nice music in one of the lounges during the supper hour, but we had to miss a lot of it as we were eating. The service was incredible. Absolutely great staff in every area. The meals were all great except the Mexican one. Did not care for that one at all. It was not what we were expecting. The other specialty restaurant was great, and we also enjoyed the variety offered daily in the buffet. All in all, good daily variety of excellent food. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was 30 days across southern Australia, across the Indian Ocean, and parts of South Africa. We had never been on a Viking Ocean Cruise before, only Rivers across Europe and China on Viking. We were surprised at how quickly we acclimated to being on the ship for 30 days but the time went quickly. Viking is a first rate operation with passenger comfort a top priority. The ship is beautifully designed with Viking era art throughout. Free WiFi and huge movie list for sea day entertainment. Staff learned our names and treated us like royalty. Wide range of on board entertainment such as lectures from archeologists, astronomers, historians, indigenous people performed their native dances and music, and a troupe of dancers and musicians traveled with us to entertain as well. A free spa with relaxation tables, hot tubs, cold plunge tubs, a frozen grotto filled with snow and a steam room. Massage therapists, beauty salon, and gym rounded out the experience. Laundry facilities on each deck. Small stores with lots of fun articles to buy for souvenirs at decent prices for a cruise ship. It was a small ship but did not feel crowded. Lots of public areas to use with cozy furniture for lounging. Multiple bars and snack stations for around the clock refreshment. Can’t wait to go again!!! Read Less

Viking Sun is a simply lovely ship, kept in immaculate condition, by a crew that was second to none. The service is outstanding, from the Cleaners to the Captain, a friendly ,kind, caring group of people that would be difficult to replicate, I think. The public spaces on Viking Sun are restful, comfortable ,elegant and so well thought out. So many places to just simply "Be". The word of Hygge is worth finding ,for its meaning,as this is everywhere..This is a Family run Cruise Line, carefully created with any of the downside of cruising, carefully removed. There are rules, and expectations, quietly enforced, some by an excellent Cruise Director, for instance in the epidemic of "Devices"..,during evening theater performances, guests are told to turn these off, as they are an annoyance and distraction for those around you...Well roll that out on every cruise line there is, please.! The Cabins are very comfortable, with large bathrooms, heated floors, not often required, but bliss, when needed..I would say that a couch is much more comfortable than the chairs, in the past, I have been known to choose a cruise line that has couches ,especially on a lengthy journey. This journey was part of the World Cruise, and mostly people didn't differentiate, they mingled quite well. A large group of women knitted for hats for Babies, in underdeveloped countries along the way, a knitting tutor, who was amazing, another who arranged the handing over of these gifts, made for a gathering of kindred spirits, who bonded so well with laughter and enduring friendships along the way. There were many Sea Days on this journey so this activity was one of the nicest times ,to recall, on lengthy journeys throughout the years. Vikings generosity in the developing world was extremely kind, they gave so much along the way, to the Cyclone Relief in Mozambique, ,so generous , even the crew took up collections of clothing and necessities for Dakar in Senegal. It made me feel proud to be sailing with such a Cruise Line and its Crew. The variety of Dining was simply great, always something different along the way, and all of a high standard. We mostly used The World Cafe, preferring to serve ourselves rather than be waited upon, just our choice. Entertainment was very good, some excellent talent, so difficult to please all of the people all of the time, but they excelled themselves. The Cooking School, so professional and a delight to be part of. The Shore Excursions we found to be very good, there is an included one in every Port, which were all enjoyable. Shore excursions staff were so helpful, should changes or new excursions be required. It was hard to accept that a portion of the other excursions were all booked out , well ahead of time, the very good ones, priority given to the World Cruisers. This could probably be managed in a different way in the future. However I do understand that in South Africa, there are limitations on how many places there can be on tours, there simply are not many more buses and guides to be had at times. This Country is a challenge for any Cruise Line, in my impression it was far from easy to manage. Complaints about illness on ships being uncontrolled is bizarre, this is down to the Passengers, who, unfortunately, sometimes ,are not responsible in their actions , even in the basics of coughing in public... Just a sad fact of life, that illness spreads, amongst many people in a confined space. The medical care on board was excellent, of required. So much is included with Viking, costs once On Board are minimal ,Internet for passengers and crew ,included, is so very good.Drinks at lunch and dinner ,also. Disembarking was a little difficult, as for some reason, from the berth in the Thames, the tenders were only being partially filled, so delays occurred. We enjoyed everyday on Viking Sun, and have already booked to travel again on Viking Ocean in the future. Read Less

PROS: Everything on ship was great, but the spa and fitness facilities were exceptional and surpassed any I've used on other cruises or on land. Pool under dome that could be closed depending on weather conditions. Talented entertainers, diverse and interesting educational presentations. All crew members provided outstanding and responsive service. Included WiFi worked most of the time and was acceptable given the technology limitations when far out to sea. COULD BE IMPROVED: Some included excursions were just walking tours near ship that left much to be desired. Many optional excursions had limited number of seats so most the best, most popular ones sold out early. Onboard shopping options somewhat limited. Time in most ports was too short--overnight stay would have enhanced the visit. It would be nice if itinerary could be flexible so that when a scheduled popular port (e.g. Easter Island) is inaccessible the ship can remain overnight in hope it can be visited following day. We were looking for a relaxing and fun way to start the new year. We were not disappointed! The crew was very friendly and took special care to make sure we were comfortable. The food was excellent with a lot of variety and choices of both informal dining as well as more formal restaurants. Both lunch and dinner included wine, which was consistently of high quality and delicious. A pleasant surprise was the quality of the onboard entertainment — professional-level shows that presented selections from ABBA, the 60s, and the Beatles. We had a junior suite, which was very comfortable. The ship had many seating areas for taking sun and enjoying quiet conversation. There was also a well-stocked library. Finally, the gym was quite large with plenty of equipment, free weights and workout space. The one concern was that the embarkation dock was changed from J to F at the last moment, and we were not informed. Therefore, we had to scramble to get to the other dock and were worried about missing the ship. The high point was certainly the New Year's Eve party and dance! This cruise was truly an experience to remember! Read Less

Viking came highly recommended by friends and family, and we chose this particular cruise because of our interests in ancient civilizations. While on the cruise, we were able to visit three different Mayan ruins. The food and dining options were second to none. Our favorite days were the At Sea days. We made full use of the spa, and went through the Nordic bathing ritual on an almost daily basis. Plenty of open spaces, with board games, cards, and a puzzle station. This is most definitely not a party or a booze cruise. Which is one of the reasons why we enjoyed it so very much. Our only issues were with the descriptions of some of the excursions, as well as the timing of the excursions. More time was devoted to traveling on the excursions than actuality at the sites. During a 7 hour tour, we only had 105 minutes to explore the site, and the remaining time was spent in transit. We would do it again, we were just disappointed that we didn't have more time to explore. Read Less

My wife and I wanted a high quality, small ship, mosty inclusive cruising experience. Viking Ocean Cruises was highly rated. Very effective advertising. Decided to give them a try for an 8 day Caribbean cruise. We were not disappointed. Used Viking Air for transportation to Miami...no issues. Transfer from Airport to the ship (Viking Sun) went well. Embarkation was smooth. Cabin (a delux on deck 4) was outstanding...really liked heated floors in bathroom. Bed comfortable. Room fridge stocked with soft drinks, water and chocolate at no charge. Food was high quality but would have preferred simpler fare (hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue) besides just at lunch. Nice that specially restaurants were free, although we didn’t dine at either one. Ships store (toiletries, snacks) had limited hours...should be longer. Fitness Center adequate...given demographics of ship not a lot of competition for equipment. Spa options excellent but early reservations a must for basics like Manicures and Pedicures. Excursion options good. We paid for one excurion (jungle ATV) and loved it...well worth the extra money. Included tours not bad either. We’re not alcohol drinkers so skipped the drink package. Cruise Director planned and executed a great New Year’s Eve party. Received a ship bridge tour from watch officer...really interesting. Crew was great...very friendly and attentive to needs. Debarkation smooth. Customs in Miami was quick and easy. We booked another cruise while on board...we’ll be repeat customers. Viking doesn’t try to nickel and dime you to death (photographers, art, etc.). Read Less

My wife and I (I'm in my 70's)wanted to see Belize and Mexico primarily to see the ancient Mayan ruins but we didn't want to see the normal tourist hot spots that you can get on television documentaries all the time so we ventured into the excursions offered by Viking Oceans. We chose Viking Oceans because it was a smaller cruise shipt and didn't carry thousands of passengers giving us a more intimate yet sociable experience. We went to Miami a few days early and made the mistake of staying in a hotel on the beach. The hotel that was booked for us was terrific but our mistake was getting a hotel on the beach. During the time we were there, the beach was really quite empty (cooler weather) but the shops and nearby restaurants were too overcrowded for us(again we like things more private and intimate). Our embarkation started with being picked up by the Viking staff and getting a short tour of Miami before heading to the ship. The tour was very interesting and went well. The ship seemed gigantic but getting to our rooms and having the bags delivered went off without a hitch. Every staff member was more than helpful making sure all our needs were met. The cabin was spacious well designed, clean, well stocked. comfortable and the veranda was a terrific place to go and just chill and drink some wine, The four dining rooms allowed plenty of room for places to eat and room service 24/7. I was never disappointed about any menu's but even though we had booked our reservations about eight months prior to our departure, their two specialty restaurants were booked for the entire trip and we never got to use it. The only thing I wish they would do is give every guest a chance to eat there at least once during the trip by simply limiting pre-booking to the larger suites to one visit on any given day and then allowing them to book more days once they were on the ship but again only allow one booking per day for any day and time they choose. This will allow everyone a chance to book any available restaurant at least once. Don't get me wrong, the food in all the restaurants was terrific but the smaller ones allow for more intimate dining which is what we would have preferred. There was never a lack of things to do or see on the ship. We walked throughout the ship familiarizing ourselves with its layout and that took us just about a full day. Social gatherings and just sitting out on the decks and relaxing always gave us opportunities to meet new people and make new friendships. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Each and every one of them make you feel like you were a king or queen. They were fantastic and I don't know how they can do that day after day and still make you feel that they wanted you to give them something for them to do to make you feel comfortable and satisfied. The excursions we chose were fantastic. Well organized, knowledgeable guides and just total enjoyment. I believe on our next trip we will not go on as many excursions and probably choose to go off on our own exploratory expeditions to really get to know the country we are visiting. Disembarkation went just as smoothly as our embarkation. Not a single complaint about anything. The Cruise ship spaced us out according to our individual travel time schedule so everyone wasn't trying to get off the ship at the same time. Very well organized. This was my first cruise and I was totally impressed. This was my wife's third cruise and she said it was better than the Viking River Cruise she went on with her sister but only because I was with her this time. When we are ready to go on another cruise, Viking Cruises will be our first and only choice. As Tony the Tiger says "They're Great!" Read Less

Looked for a hoilday cruise after Christmas. Chose Viking for a luxury experience. Embarkation a breeze at POM - on the ship in 15 minutes. No lines. No problems. Boat was not at location on paperwork but was easily found Room was not ready on time due to a prolonged immigration delay for staff. Understandable. PJS was very nice. A fantastic location. Very quiet. Meals on board were very good. Enjoyed every meal except the Chefs Table. The Asian Panorama was average. The wine selections was very good however. We had Silver Beverage package. Enjoyed all the different red wines, Spouse likes her Chardonnay.. Linda Clancey the Cruise Director was fantastic. The shows were very good, Also enjoyed the enrichment lectures. Port and shore excursions met our expectations, Really enjoyed the Lamanai Mayan site and Cichan Itza, Negatives: 1, Ship motion - seas were rough from Miami to Key West and first day at sea from Key West to Belize, Maybe small size of ship made this worse? 2, Key West port - Mallory Square was closed due to damage. Couldn't tender due to wind/waves. Got into a dock after another ship left. Port was very crowded. 3. Cozumel - short time in port. Overall would highly recommend Vking Read Less

We chose this as we wanted to try Viking Ocean and like the shorter length from Lisbon. We also never had done a holiday cruise and Viking did it right. The food, entertainment, bars and lectures were top notch. We have been on many cruises and this was probably the most well designed cruise-ship we have been on to date. We booked again for a colder weather cruise in New England in 2020 and are thinking of the winter Norway cruise in 2022. The food was excellent and the specialty venues were also great. We had the SS package and are wine lovers and had a wide choice of wines by the glass to order. We also got a discount on bottle purchases and enjoyed our French Champagne by the Bottle. If you are interested in cooking classes, sign up right away when you get on board as they do not advertise them in advance. Read Less

We took the New Year’s Cruise with Viking as our cousin’s had booked it and we love Viking. From the easy on to the easy exit all was seamless. Our rooms were ready so we went and checked out our room on the 4 th floor and our cabin stuart Mohammad was there to greet us and tell us what was different from the ship we took on the Homelands and he was excellent. The room was always made up, fresh water refilled and new towels and products refilled in the bathroom. Viking does it right, from all balcony rooms to no kids under 18 and no casino. They don’t nickel and dime you as specialty restaurants are included, wine, beer, soda included at lunch/ dinner but what makes Viking special is the crew, everyone smiling and always a sunny good morning/evening, nothing was too much trouble. A few issues we had was two of the shows were the same as the shows we saw a year and a half ago on the Homelands ( ABBA/Beatles) maybe it’s time to change shows as most people are returning Viking cruisers now. Also in our refrigerator on the last 2 nights we had all seltzer water with no diet/ regular coke as we requested and they don’t supply chips anymore just pack of nuts and small chocolates. This, I believe, was a new route for Viking, Turquoise Caribbean Seas, and some of the included tours were not up to Viking standards. We drove almost an hour to Mérida only to have half an hour in the main square and our guide gave no description of what we were looking at just, “ this is the oldest house, this is the oldest church” and no time to visit anything. The trip to San Gervasio was disappointing as our guide talked about the Mayan number system and calendar but not anything detailed about the complex and never saw the tall house, just the few ruins at the beginning of the complex so we had plenty of time to shop, which we didn’t need. In Key West we could not tender but Viking worked their magic and got one ship at port to leave early so that we could at least get into Key West and everyone could take the included trolley ride, but all optional tours had to be cancelled. On the plus side we were in Key West for the sunset. I took the Snorkeling at the Barrier Reef in Belize and it was a great tour, the guides were very informative and never left people on their own in the water. We were in groups and they had kayaks around in case anyone got in trouble, and a rum punch to wash out the salt water in the mouth when we came back on the boat made for a nice touch. We were dropped off at Belize port where most stores/ restaurants were closed because it was Sunday. One thing about this cruise was that there were two sea days (7 night cruise) and as Viking is a port intensive cruise line, this was a disappointment to us as another port vs. a sea day would have been better for us as we don’t like sitting around but enjoy doing things. Like I said we took it because of my cousin’s taking it and probably would not have chosen this cruise for just us, but we were continuing on to a Florida vacation so this was a nice start to it. We are already booked for Frances Finest River Cruise this summer and Empires of the Mediterranean for 2020 so Viking has our loyalty, this is just my observation of this cruise. Read Less

This was my third Viking Cruise. It was a wonderful trip! The Viking Sun is beautiful, elegantly decorated, and pristine. The staff is very helpful at all times. Every activity from boarding to disembarking is organized and easy to follow. The amenities are great, especially the spa and pools. Our room was very clean, had everything you might need, and the low lighting and heated floor in the bathroom are very nice. It is nice to have such a great movie selection on the big TV, excellent wireless connection, and American outlets for your devices. The steward was very attentive, and the mini bar was filled with our requested tonic water every day. The food and cocktails are all good on the ship, and the Chef's Table is a must for anyone who cruises with Viking. The excursions were fun and educational, but I wish we had more time in each port. I already booked my next Viking cruise for June. Read Less

We chose this itinerary on Viking because we wanted to see Key West and spend a few days with warm sunny weather. We had previously taken a Viking River Cruise and enjoyed the smaller ship aspect of the Sun. From embarkation to disembarkation, we were treated like valued guests. Our room (DV6) on Deck 3 was spacious, well organized and with sufficient storage in closet, drawers and bathroom. We loved having the balcony and the room to enjoy coffee at sunrise and a wine at sunset. The coffee pot was a particular treat as we aren’t human until coffee is consumed. Instruction for pot were fairly clear and produced strong coffee...just right! All meals were tasty, varied and served with a smile and wine. We ate at Manfedi’s one evening and Chef’s Table another...both we’re outstanding. The entertainment was well planned and timed which suited those of us who are ready to retire before midnight. There were lots of public spaces to give the impression of a much larger ship....would highly recommend for a relaxing winter break...or any adult get away. Read Less

This was the sixth cruise my wife and I have taken with Viking--four river cruises and, now, two ocean cruises. We purchased the pre-cruise extension in Lisbon because we wanted to see it on the trip. Overall, the trip was excellent. We are accustomed to a very high standard of performance from Viking and our expectations, for the most part were fulfilled. The ship was immaculate, well maintained and well operated. Most of the time in a crossing is devoted to sea days and rest. The entertainers on this ship were truly extraordinary. They presented music that stretched from classical opera repertoire to Motown. There are no dedicated "dancers" but the singers danced and sang and did so very professionally. They entertained! The crew were friendly as well as helpful and accommodating, including the members of the deck department. They all seemed dedicated to helping passengers enjoy a great vacation--and they succeeded. Stateroom attendants were amazingly thorough and helpful. Our air arrangements were horrible however. We were booked on a United flight that operated an old Continental 737-200. Even though we booked suite accommodations on the ship, we were given some of the least desireable seats on this very over-crowded, filthy and old aircraft. On our return, free-air flight from Miami to Jacksonville we were charged $30 per bag by American Airlines and, again, assigned the very least desireable seats on the very cramped Embaer RJ-45. We could have driven from Miami to Jacksonville and arrive sooner than we did using our Viking Air booked flight. Do not use Viking Air. Be prepared for very leisurely meals in the dining room. Plan for a couple of hours or more at dinner if you choose to take your dinner in the dining room. Service is very slow, even on this ship of only 900 passengers. Or hope that more servers are hired to provide better service. The problem is not the waiters:the problem is that there are too few of them. Afternoon tea in the Winter Garden is a highlight of each day for us. With Viking, you also can expect a robust enrichment program presented by a "Resident Historian" as well as various "Guest Lecturers." Watch the schedule carefully to plan your days in a way that permits you to take advantage of these opportunities. They are wonderful and varied. We were particularly attracted to the presentations of a flautist who talked about music and its relationships to our trip and ports of call. We also heard from an astronomer and had the opportunity to learn about ocean sailing and rowing adventures. Viking is a welcome newcomer to the ocean cruise market. It provides a superior experience and, knowing its careful attention to detail in all its operations, I expect the delays in dining service will be resolved before our next trip, which most likely will be on Viking (but without its air option). Incidentally, there were no children among the passengers and there is no children's program. This is not an experience for children. Read Less
