We wanted to see Cuba. And, we were able to get a good view of the city, the countryside, and some of the people. The highlights were primarily three: One, the vintage cars, and our riding to dinner and the Copacapana was so much fun, Two, the owner's suite aboard the ship was TO DIE FOR! Exquisite, luxurious, with the most accomodating crew. We invited a group of CruiseCritic travelers to join us in a "Cabin Crawl", ending up in our remarkable accomodations. The staff provided a butler, hor d'oerves, and a bartender for complimentary drinks, including wine and mixed drinks. They were wonderful. And, Three, the Cruise staff accepted my offer to conduct the inter-denominational church service (I offer and do these on many, many cruise lines; people give them high marks, I understand.) The service was well attended and many really appreciated my willingness to lead it. And ,I appreciated the Cruise Director's willing attitude. Read Less

I wanted to see Cuba and it's turbulent past before the changes of time. The dining experience was excellent.the service personnel always friendly and courteous ....we enjoyed the Chef's Table selection and the Italian choices. My mate liked especially the Market Place Cafe where we had all breakfasts, some lunches and if he could have, dinner. I never surprised me to see the perfectly ironed and starched linens. We were impressed with the seafood fiesta where the tantalizing aromas outdid theglistens selection of superb , especially nordic seafood. The talented Singers and dancers did best to entertain us. The Spanish Guitare marveled at romantic music to dancing and listening. The shore excursions were a big disappointment. I look at the Itinerary, flamingo's in thedistance, a 3-hour of the most uncomfortable boat ride one can imagine , a nonexistent Botanical Garden? The excursion personnel did not a good job in explaining other optionsthat would have been a better use of our time. I regret having missed the opporatunity of a night in Havana, due to insufficient attention and care by Shore Excursions. What Iii really enjoyed was the infinity pool. One late afternoon, not a soul around, the sun was shining over the sparking ocean . From the quiet pool, one can imaginefloating away to infinity. Read Less

Viking gave us an all inclusive overnight in Havana and free excursions in Cienfuego to compensate us. as well as on board credit. We were a little nervouss because of the change in itinnery and news reports of diplomatic problems. Non of these were an issue while traveling in cuba. All the guides were knowledgeble and friendly The excursions were excellent-beyond expectations and the ship was beyond expectations Ship was elegant, Cabin was attractive, service was also beyond expectations. Wonderful spa experience, wonderful food. Afternoon tea was superb. Very poor communication during the year-long reservation period about changes in times and places. Excursions were spent riding a bus to get somewhere for a very short rather hurried view of the place. Had a jr suite that was supposed to allow earlier boarding—-had to inquire after original check in and finally allowed to board ahead of some. This jr suite was also to have stocked mini bar with drinks and snacks. We requested wine and were constantly resupplied with liquor and had to call to get corrected. On about the third day we ate some of the snacks—-they were never resupplied. It’s all too bad——we had booked this cruise a year ahead (to get free airfare but that didn’t go away as we were told it would if not booked by a certain date) and were so looking forward to it. I’m very sorry it and Viking were so disappointing and not the top notch cruise I was expecting. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the destination and the value of the cruise - it was offered at a really good rate. The onboard lectures were informative and entertaining, and the shore excursions were likewise. The ship's accommodations were outstanding, and the staff were uniformly helpful and attentive. The cuisine on the ship was fresh and tasty, with a good variety and new items each meal.Viking Cruises handled all the details about getting our visas for Cuba. We also appreciated the many items included in the cost of the cruise, such as wifi, wine with meals, and so forth, because these have been add-ons on for extra cost on cruises we have done on other cruise lines. One disappointment was that the ship docked solely in Cienfuegos, and the trip overland to Havana was long; if there could have been docking on Havana one day, and the other days in Cienfuegos, that would have been preferable. We have done several river cruises with Viking and were curious about Viking Ocean. The price was good and had free air. We then continue to Cuba on a back to back for a total of 18 days. We found the staff outstanding, the went out of there way to make your cruise enjoyable. The entertainment was very good. The food was very good, and we enjoyed having the option of dinning rooms without additional charges. Our favorite was Manfredi's. As expected, the ports on the Transatlantic were limited, and the shore excursions were a disappointment. However, I enjoyed the Cultural Cuba ports and shore excursions. The Background information and speakers were very good, and made the sea days enjoyable. I had a knee replacement, so I found the main pool hard to get into, and only used it once. The infinity pool at the back of the ship is small, but very enjoyable. The spa therapy pool is very nice, my used it every day. The seating around the the pools were very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting outside the Wintergarden, it was very quiet and comfortable. The pool grill had a great selecton of hamburgers and the onions rings are great. Afternoon tea was fun, and the pastries in the Explorers' Lounge were outstanding. The cabin and balcony was comfortable, but our closet was in an awkward location next to the bed. Read Less

I was delighted finding on the television the biography of Albert Einstein. I enjoyed an entertaining and enlightening day in the cabin. I appreciated a cabin large enough for my chair and walker. Having a balcony made it a pleasure to enjoy the view whether of the waves of the sea or the other ocean ships passing by. Also it was nice to be able to open the door for fresh ocean air. The choice of which gourmet restaurants shall I try was difficult. The menus were all tempting. Each offered entrees I couldn't resist. Service was always excellent, I think I tried every one. Now that Cuba is open we wanted to see what was happening there. My wife visited Cuba in 1980's as a travel agent and saw how poor the country was. This time I was surprised how poor it still was. Beautiful architecture was in disrepair - thought some reconstruction was evident. Disappointed that Cuba would not let our small ship dock In Havana, however it allowed us to see the country side during the 4 1/2 hour bus trip. An over night excursion allowing use to stay over night in Havana was very special. Wonderful 5-star hotel, great dinner, a ride in the old American cars and a visit to the Copacabana night club highlighted the excursion. Little to see in Cienfuegos. This was the Viking Sun' first cruise. A wonderful new ship. We had a, Explorer cabin - one of the best we have ever cruised in. Large walk-in closets, direct view out the bow of the ship and may other special features. Truely a five-star-cruise. Read Less

This was my third cruise with Viking. We were able to drive to the Port of Miami so embarkation and disembarkation were extremely easy, along with parking at the terminal. Our cabin included a sitting area, large closet, plenty of drawers, and balcony with chairs and table. The ship has two specialty dining rooms, a main restaurant, cafeteria style restaurant, plus several other areas with food. The very friendly crew was from lots of different countries and it was interesting finding out where they were from and learning about these countries. The ocean ships of Viking are smaller ships which is what appeals to me. This was Viking's first cruise to Cuba so there were some snags with the excursions but having been with them before and seeing how well run their excursions always are I am sure their next cruise was very well organized. The destination lectures were very informative and knowledgeable. Read Less

We chose this cruise to see Cuba and their culture before it changes. Knew nothing about Viking Ocean Cruises until reading reviews. To our great surprise this turned out to be one of if not the best cruise we have taken. The Viking Sun is almost brand new which is very apparent as you look around at all the modern technology and spotlessness of everything. Room was a Deluxe Veranda on deck 3. Very nice with comfortable bed, sitting area, coffee maker and mini-bar. Food was excellent even in the buffet which is where we ate almost every meal. Wide variety of choices including great sushi and seafood. Servers were very good if you needed something to drink, etc. Bar staff did a wonderful job of making drinks correctly and quickly. Good entertainment and limited activities but didn't choose this cruise for those things. First stop was Key West which have been to before so just went into town to walk around have a drink and eat Key West pink shrimp. Next stop was Cienfuegos, Cuba located on the South side of the island. The shore excursion we chose was an overnight stay in Havana at the Melia' Habana that included transportation, lunch, dinner, a wonderful show at the Tropicana and breakfast before returning to the ship. Oh, did I not mention that a group of 74 restored vintage American cars from the 50's picked the group at the hotel and took us in a caravan to the Tropicana. We toured Old Havana, shopped and stopped at the Bay of Pigs Museum on the way back to the ship. Didn't choose to go on another shore excursion because we were happy to enjoy the ship. We liked Viking so much that we booked a cruise with them for next Fall. We will continue cruising with Viking. Read Less

Itinerary: Miami, at sea, Key West, Cienfuegos 3 days, at sea, Miami Viking should stick to the European cruise market and forget about the Caribbean. If you were thinking about taking a Viking Caribbean Cruise don’t do it or at least wait a few years until they work out the kinks. I did not appreciate experiencing their growing pains on my dollar. To start, the itinerary I paid for was Key West, Havana overnight, Belize and Cozumel. Viking marketed this cruise before they had approval to dock in Havana, so in August we were informed that they were not approved and the itinerary no longer included Havana, Belize or Cozumel. Viking attempted to make up for it by giving a $250 ship board credit per person and an included tour on each day in Cienfuegos. The credit did help ease the annoyance a little, but if I knew then what I know now I would have wanted a full refund (not that this was an option). EXCURSIONS: IT IS AN 8 HOUR DRIVE ROUND TRIP FROM CIENFUEGOS TO HAVANA. The tours included a full day in Havana excursion (12 hours) or a 1.5 day overnight in Havana to make up for the itinerary change. Viking did not inform anyone that this meant a 4 hour bus ride each way to Havana. The Trinidad excursion was a little less then 2 hours each way. Yes, there is a bathroom on the bus. The excursions were a complete cluster the first day in Cuba. We waited 2.5 hours to clear immigration, exchange money and get the tour started. So, if you were on the 12 hour excursion to Havana you spent over 2 hours waiting, 8 hours driving and less than 2 hours to actually see Havana. The Trinidad excursion was also rushed due to the late start. The lunch was good, but again very rushed. The streets were so hilly and uneven that a few people had to request a cab for the way back to the tour bus. Do not take this tour if you have mobility issues. No time to shop or explore on your own. Cienfuegos on foot also felt rushed even though we started on time. Cigar factory part of tour was not worth the stop, but overall tour was pretty good. Tour guide couldn’t get the QuietVox to work so we couldn’t hear anything. We finally had 30 minutes to shop at the end. The Ship: The ship was elegant, beautiful and spotless. No crowds and no kids. Balconies in every stateroom. This ship is EXACTLY the same as the Viking Sea. I do think all the Viking ocean ships are designed the same, but even the menu and entertainment are exactly the same. The food: I am comparing the food on the Viking Sun to the very high bar that Viking set for themselves on my Viking Sea Ocean Mediterranean Cruise. The Wintergarden service was very slow and disorganized the first couple days. Manfredi’s served us Caprese salad with frozen mozzarella and cold pasta. On the Mediterranean Cruise Viking tailored the menu to each country we visited as we were in the region. They did not put much effort into creating a Cuban cuisine. They used the same menu as the other ship. However, the sushi was amazing and the pool grill had excellent service. The drinks: On the first sea day, it was as if Viking was surprised that people drink mojitos and pina coladas and hang out at the pool on a Caribbean cruise. Everyone was complaining that the pina coladas were not that good. For the price of this cruise you expect the drinks to be done right and not made with cheap mixer. I was also surprised that Viking would pull something like being out of stock of the nicer tequila included in the drink package. I suspect the itinerary change fiasco cut into their profit margin so they tried to save money in ways they thought would go unnoticed. We noticed. If this were a cheap cruise all these things would have been forgivable and even expected, but this was a VERY expensive cruise and the value was just not there. So you might as well take the more affordable cruise from the cruise lines that are experienced in this region. I have sailed two Viking Ocean cruises and I am not sure I like the all inclusive pricing. You end up paying a premium for things you don't use or like. While I appreciate the culinary artistry of the Chef's Table it was not good enough to pay more for. You get to reserve the specialty restaurants based on price of your cabin. The higher price for first dibs is NOT worth it. The main restaurant and casual dining venue are just as good. If you don't drink wine you still pay for it. The included tours are usually just OK and you have to pay for the better ones. They purposely schedule tours so you will not be able to take the included excursion and another optional one. We code Viking as they were one of the first cruise lines to travel to Cuba. We had been on several Viking river cruises and were looking forward to the brand new ocean ship. The ship was amazing from our cabin to the entertainment to the fitness room to the spa to the restaurants. We especially enjoyed the Rat Pack singers as part of the entertainment onboard. We each had a massage and enjoyed the snow grotto. The fitness rooms had all of the equipment we needed to work out while at sea. Our cabin had a coffee maker, small refrigerator with complimentary water, snacks and soft drinks that were replenished every day. We also had complimentary robes and slippers and binoculars in our cabin. Our cabin steward was attentive to our every wish. Our first stop was to Key West where we sailed on a catamaran for a snorkeling adventure at a reef filled with colorful fish. Havana is an amazing city and we enjoyed our ride in a 1952 Chevy convertible to dinner at a Cuban fusion dinner. We were then treated to an evening at the legendary Tropicana Club followed by staying overnight in a 5 Star hotel in Havana. The next morning we toured Fusterland in Havana before heading to the Bay of Pigs museum, I highly recommend visiting Cuba before it changes and traveling on a Viking Ocean ship. Read Less

The Viking Sun was seven week old when we boarded -- gorgeous! Some rough spots with a new ship, but minimal and resolved. But the itinerary was lacking --- way too much time on buses (nice as they were, with great tour guides). If the ship was too large to go into to the shallow Havana harbor, why not stay outside the harbor and use the tenders since it had to use these in Cienfuegos anyway? Overall food and service were good, but service was much better for dinner when 300 people were still off-ship on excursions. We were disappointed in the Italian speciality restaurant -- menu was plastic, crowded tables; service and food were OK, but not special. The Captial Table speciality restaurant was excellent -- interesting fixed menu, with supurb service. We heartily recommend the Viking Sun, but not the itinerary if only one port in Cuba. As far as we knew there was not an outreach to the LGBT community until we asked for a designated meeting place. On other cruise lines this has been included in their standard schedule. Viking did accommodate an announcement after we asked (with a very good turn out), but no one from staff came to welcome us, as is typical on other lines. Disappointing overall. Read Less

This was a Trans Atlantic Cruise, the first for The Viking Sun, but not the first for my spouse and I. The ship is lovely in every way. It's comfortable, uncrowded, quiet, and supremely well appointed. If it were rated as a hotel (and after all an ocean cruise ship today is a floating hotel/resort) it would be 5 star. The spa is beyond belief. It is open to all passengers unlike on most other cruise ships we have been on. The spa pool is wonderful, as are the hot and cold rooms. The fitness center overlooks the side of the ship instead of the front or rear. It took a bit of getting used to this view while using some of the exercise equipment. The equipment was all new and very state of art. The service in the room was outstanding, with water and towels being provide without needing to ask. What was lacking were daily classes such as a morning stretch class, or ab class, or something such as this. There were classes, but they did not take place daily and weren't specifically stretch, or something like that. The main dining room, called "The Restaurant" needs a new name. The service was excellent, the quality was very good, but the preparation was not up to the standards that one expects on a luxury cruise cruise or fine hotel. As for the alternate dining at Manfredi's Italian was marginal and way too noisy. We dined there twice and both meals were not very good and most certainly not very Italian except by name. The Chefs Table is best described as silly dining. The menu items were interesting and a few of the dishes were quite good. But the dishes didn't work together to make a meal. I would not waste my time eating a dinner in this restaurant. The World Cafe offers the best prepared food on the ship. We don't enjoy buffet dining. But we found ourselves eating at the Cafe one evening after a long day ashore. We had to go back there a few more times because their menu was the same as in "The Restaurant" and was prepared better. As for "The Restaurant" my recommendation is to change the name to "The Dining Room" Fine hotels don't serve fine meals in a restaurant! Read Less

After an informative one hour overview, only one representative on board, was insufficient. No email contact. Response to a hand written inquiry on a 2018 cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver was via a voicemail to our Cabin. No return voicemail available. We were advised we were ‘wait listed’. Just did the Mid Atlantic crossing on this ship from Lisbon to Miami. First off the ship in nicely laid out. Really liked all the quiet areas of the ship where you could play games or read a good book. We had a deluxe verandah cabin and it was very comfortable. Especially liked the heated bathroom floors. Our cabin steward was the best one we have had after 17 cruises. I really liked the promenade deck, one time around was 1/4 of a mile. The two specialty restaurants were very good. Service in these restaurants was good to excellent. Embarkation was a breeze, again the fastest we have had in 17 cruises. I would have liked a ship with a casino but we knew that this did not exist on the Viking Sun well before we boarded. Ate dinner in the main dining room two nights, the first night the service was poor. They failed to deliver all of our group of 6 appetizers on time as well as some being appetizers that we did not order. The next visit we made was vastly improved in service. We did however eat at a different table with different waiters. The world buffet restaurant was okay but the passenger flow in this area can be congested especially for breakfast. The waiter service on both pool areas was poor to good. Almost seemed short staffed in a way and or not sufficiently trained. Because of inconsistent service I found myself clearing the table of dirty dishes and getting myself something to drink. Sat by the main pool 5 days reading a book, I was offered water twice but not once did a waiter or waitress ask me if I wanted something to drink. By the way I had purchased the silver spirit drink package before the cruise. So if I wanted alcohol I would have to go to the bar and get it myself. I have been on Oceania cruises before and this was never an issue. Getting off the ship did not go well, we were supposed to be off the ship at 7:00AM and on our bus to the airport at 7:30. We could not leave ship until 7:25AM, so something went wrong here. Not sure what the problem was. I was debating to rate this ship either 3 or 4 and decided on 4 because of an overall nice layout and design of the ship. I still prefer Oceania and Celebrity but would consider Viking again if the deal and itinerary were right. Read Less

Viking ocean’s great reviews were not overstated. The ship is beautiful with lots of lovely, quiet spaces. Our cabin (penthouse veranda) was spacious and had more storage space than we needed - a first for us. The well-equipped self-serve laundry was a pleasant surprise. We are elite on other lines and get free laundry but this was better. Entertainment was terrific, a small ensemble of singers and dancers who did small shows that did not overextend them, as too many cruise lines do. Small, pre-dinner recitals by one or two of them were a special treat. Kudos to the cruise director who scheduled extra performances of one show when more passengers wanted to attend than could be accommodated in the theater - a pleasant change from so many lines where on board cruise staff have little discretion to deviate from schedules dictated by corporate staff. Shore excursions available for a fee were the usual array. The included excursion in each port was essentially a drive-by tour or, in Bermuda, a bus pass. The only real negative was the food service. The main dining room was only average and the included specialty dining options were disappointing. One had only so-so Italian cuisine and the other had a menu fixed menu that was unusual at best. We are not timid, meat-and-potatoes diners, but we found preparations odd, to put it kindly. Fortunately , our server offered the option of ordering from the main dining room menu. The other disappointment was the buffet. The quality and variety of the food and presentation (small serving dishes, frequently refreshed) were excellent BUT the hours were far too limited. The pluses were afternoon tea in the Wintergarden, a treat we allowed ourselves only once, and availability of espresso drinks at several bars and at the buffet. Embarkation was slick. We arrived at check-in to find a clerk waiting for us (no lines!!) and our bags arrived in our cabin not long after we did. Read Less

This was our first Viking Ocean Cruise (We had previously been on a couple Viking River Cruises.) and our first Atlantic crossing. It won't be our last! Everything was perfect from booking to disembarking in Miami. Because the Atlantic crossing has few ports to visit, my wife and I were both concerned about so many days at sea. We should never have been concerned as we were kept busy beginning in the morning with a great breakfast followed by a workout in the beautiful fitness center and spa. The pool, lectures and other provided activities kept us busy throughout the day. Lunch either poolside or in one of the dining areas was always great. Dinner in the evening was followed by a show and then either dancing and drinks in Torshavn, a movie under the stars or maybe a brisk walk around the deck. We have cruised with at least 6 other cruise lines in the past, but none compared with Viking. From the absence of photographers always wanting to take your photo to complimentary beer, soda and wine provided at lunch and dinner it quickly sets Viking apart from the others! The free speciality restaurants were amazing. If you like steak, don't miss the ribeye at Manfredi's! Entertainment was low key but always fun and entertaining. Don't expect a Vegas casino type production, but do expect to have an enjoyable hour of entertainment. The soap they use and the scratchiness of the sheets surprised me! When I asked my steward if there were other sheets on board that were less scratchy she said "no"! On day 3 (after mentioning the concern each day) I was given 2 pillows that were washed without laundry soap. This helped...but I still continued to get rashes fron the sheets themselves! I would have thought that a line (like Viking) would have soft, allergy-free linens. We thoroughly enjoyed the French cooking class (extra $) worth the experience. The wine at lunch and dinner was a nice touch, except it was all French wine...and the same taste each day. It would direct you to purchase the beverage package for "the experience" of dining/pairing. If you are just looking for wine without a pricetag...it is fine. The music offered on the ship was perfect for us (guitarist, pianist and 3 piece orchestra. Evening shows were good. Loved the movie afternoon with popcorn. For us...one of the greatest things Viking offered was the cappacino bars. What a treat! So...we had the great and the missed on this trip...our expectations being met in some areas and fell wayfully short in other areas. Read Less

We really like the ocean crossings and traveled once before on Viking. This cruise was as wonderful as the first. Embarkation went seamlessly and we were allowed into our cabins a bit early. Cabin was roomy and comfortable. All dining venues are really good on board Viking. We enjoyed Manfredi's and ate there a few times; we skipped the Chef's Table after eating there once on a prior cruise -- just don't like not being able to have a choice of things. The main dining room is definately as good as the specialty dining. The movies in the room were good and we enjoyed the facilities on board. Service is outstanding -- the entire crew really goes above and beyond. Our one real disappointment was the transportation following disembarkation in Florida. We arranged with Viking for a private car to take us to the airport. This was prepaid and not cheap. We followed instructions from two different Viking reps inside the cruise terminal for finding the car only to discover that there was no car, and the representatives outside the cruise terminal had no idea what we were talking about or where to find this car. Of course, you cannot go back inside the terminal to get a Viking person. After literally an hour (seriously, an hour -- we were afraid of missing our plane!), finally a Viking person seemed to find that someone had indeed ordered a car. He called it and 30 minutes later it appeared. Will NEVER use Viking transport again -- we'll take cabs or call an Uber. Read Less

I Had travelled a Viking river cruise earlier in the year for the first time and really enjoyed the trip so, when this transatlantic special came out in my email I thought I would give it a try. I am so glad I did. The staff, food, rooms, and ship were amazing. Truly a wonderful experience. The entire staff was more than helpful and friendly. The accommodations were also more than expected. I especially liked the room service, the food was always hot and prompt. The entertainment was also very talented. I really can't think of anything negative. As for the excursions, we also enjoyed them, but would have liked to spend a little more time in Bermuda. There really was just barely enough time to enjoy the port. We enjoyed our trip so much that we booked another trip on the Sun for Nov 2018. Can't wait to go again. Oh and we are leaving for our second viking river cruise in 25 days! I think that says it a lot for Viking. Read Less
