We chose Viking for the itinerary and the cost which included some excursions. It was more than we could have even hoped for. The ship, the crew, the food everything was top notch. Add to this the cities we visited and it was truly the trip of a lifetime. The cabin was spacious and comfortable, we loved the balcony. The cabin crew was wonderful and we had everything we needed quickly and efficiently. All of the crew on the ship was friendly and took good care of us during the entire cruise. The food in all the restaurants was incredible and I couldn't pick a favorite one, because they were all my favorites. The excursions were superior and the people that led them was knowledgeable and fun. We loved the smaller ship and we had the chance to meet other people that we have things in common with. We will book again and hopefully soon. Love, Love Viking Cruises!! Read Less

Viking always is top notch cruise experience. The ship is always in immaculate condition has the most space per passenger I've experienced. You can sit by yourself at dinner if you choose because there's always enough space for everyone to have there own table. The food is excellent and the service staff is very attentive. The accommodations are very comfortable and well appointed. The room has everything you want and is setup in an efficient way. The cabin cleaning staff is excellent and attentive. The food is fantastic, excursions are great and the staff is super helpful/friendly. Entertainment is very good with fantastic shows nightly. The fitness center is good with lots of high tech aerobic machines, dumbbells and cable machines. i would have liked some more free weights, but probably not too safe on a ship.. Highly recommend to travelers who want a excellent all inclusive, relaxing and enriching cruise experience.. Read Less

Tour guides were great at making sure the pace was right for all to enjoy the natural beauty of where ever we were visiting. Can NOT say enough about the service whether the meal staff or our room people--everyone was very friendly professional and could not do enough to insure we were satisfied with everything they were doing and offering to make a great experience. Will NOT hesitate to book another cruise with Viking in fact we took advantage of the special offer Viking offered for a future cruise when we were on this cruise--so we definitely took advantage of the great savings offered for a future cruise. The Spabis to die for and I never felt crowded at any time. Friendly helpful staff Plenty of places to sit if you want to be alone or with people Nightly live music and other entertainment. High level of security Many options for eating and lots of choices at each place. There is entertainment but it is not a party ship. It's for serious travelers. Viking's reputation and satisfied friends and family members led us to this outstanding first Viking Cruise. We have cruised many times before on other cruise lines. Should you want first class service, a relaxed atmosphere, pleasant surroundings, happy crew members, excellent entertainment and culinary delights this is the cruise line for you. This was our first time in Italy. I can't imagine being exposed to the ancient culture, history, and timeless beauty of this country in any better fashion. We finished our cruise with a Rome extension. The hotel was up to Viking standards with Viking's own concierge there to answer any questions. We took advantage of five dining opportunities: 1. The main dining room (excellent) 2. The buffet dining room (similar fare to the main dining room but easy and quick) 3. The poolside burger bar (very good for lunch after a shore excursion) 4. The Italian specialty restaurant Manfredi's (Mmmm good ribeye) 5. The Chef's table ( unique cuisine) Bravo Viking! We'll be back! Read Less

Timing. Ports of interest. Some of the included tours could have been better in Naples and Messina. Probably a guide to excellent shopping for the wife would have been nice. We enjoyed the World Cafe, high tea, evening entertainment. Our mistake was not taking some of the longer tours, which would have been more interesting. Not Viking's fault, but ours.. Lesson learned. We met several couples on the ship and with them each evening we would go the to top level Explorers' Lounge to watch the ship leave port. The crew, housekeeping, dining, etc., was excellent. Couldn't ask for more. We really enjoyed the World Cafe and Manfredi's. Great desserts ( My highlight) We have told many friends about Viking and the service. Friends just went to see the Northern Lights on Viking. Not sure what cruise or ship. Other frends went river cruising, which we did several years ago from Lyon. Keep up the good work and we will return.. Read Less

We chose Viking because of all the cruise lines we have been on, it was the best in every way. They took care of every detail -- from the time we boarded our plane from home to the time we got back home. The personnel were outstanding - personal, attentive, friendly, and service oriented. Our room was always clean and attended to, the food servers wonderful and we most especially like our wine steward. The people we met while we dined and were on our excursions with were so nice -- it added to the fun of the trip. We like that there are no small children aboard as the focus is adult food and ambiance. The fitness and recreation also geared toward adults - excellent. The excursions we chose were wonderful. I especially loved the excursion to the winery in the Calabria region as it took me back to my roots - Pompeii a little bit of history. No matter where we were the tour guides were attentive and informative. We extended our tour in Tuscany. That part of the tour far exceeded my expectations. We had a guide, Daniel, who tended to those of us who stayed at the villa from the time we disembarked the ship until we boarded our plane home. In between the excursions, the ambiance, the people at the villa -- I cannot say enough good things about the whole experience. We will always choose Viking Cruises over any other cruise line. We chose Viking Ocean Cruises based on our experience with Viking River Cruises in 2015 and our desire to visit the western Mediterranean. We ended up sailing the Orion on its maiden voyage. The ship is absolutely wonderful. Viking has translated their river ship feel into small cruise ships. We really enjoyed the restaurants, public areas of the ship, stateroom, crew, cruise directors team, entertainment, cultural experiences, ease of travel, and the optional excursions. Our only less than excellent experience was in the included excursions. This may be us comparing the included river cruise shore excursions with the ocean ones. The port cities on the Rhine may be more amenable for the included shore excursion experience than the ocean port cities. Also, we found that our optional shore excursions covered most of the same ground as the included shore excursions. We are sailing with Viking Ocean Cruises again in April 2019. We will explore the Baltic and Russia on that trip. Read Less

We had a fabulous time on our Mediterranean Odyssey with Viking. It was our first trip to Croatia which we had heard was beautiful. It was beyond beautiful...just breathtaking. We spent our 44th anniversary in Monte Carlo and had dinner in the Italian restaurant. It was a wonderful experience. We had taken two river cruises with Viking and this was the first ocean cruise with Viking. The level of service was was just as good although there were more people to take care of. The included excursions were first class and we were so pleased with the tours in each location. The tour guides were enthusiastic and professional and well informed. The food was incredible and the specialty restaurants were wonderful. You could have anything you like in the World Cafe we loved our meal there. We hope to take more cruises with Viking because of the wonderful sevice we have experienced and Viking has set the bar high enough that I am sure that we would be hard to please with any other cruiseline. We chose Viking because we have always wanted to see Europe and this seemed to be an economical and exciting way to see several different countries. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend Viking and the Mediterranean cruise itinerary which included Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Greece, and Croatia . We were on the maiden cruise of the Orion and the ship was beautiful, the food was delicious and plentiful, and the crew was awesome. Our cabin was very comfortable as was our bed. We had plenty of room. The cruise was aimed more at an older clientele and I wouldn't recommend it for young couples. The entertainment onboard ship was tailored mainly to the cultural aspect of our cruise and added to the enjoyment of the ports we visited. Viking included one excursion at each port that we visited in the price and we really enjoyed these trips which usually included a tour of the city we were visiting. I do wish they also included beach excursions as part of the experience. We saw many beautiful beaches and I really wished we had had the chance to visit and enjoy them. I also would have liked our tour guides to hand out emergency numbers in the event you became separated or needed help of some kind. We really loved the cruise and plan on taking a river cruise with Viking next year in the summer. Read Less

Having experienced a Viking river cruise 2 years ago, we thought we would try an ocean cruise. We arrived at the departure city 10 days in advance to explore and enjoy - then went to the ship. Vueling Airlines (normally I would not name an airline - but this organization deserves to be mentioned) lost one of our bags and the folks at Viking went the extra distance (literally - from Monte Carlo to Nice) to recover the bag even though they were NOT part of the problem. Customer service was perseverant and excellent! Following the official christening a week prior, we were the first passengers to experience this brand new ship - and what a treat it was! These folks know what it costs to offer a 5 star trip and do not nickel and dime you along the way. Viking does not do anything on the 'cheap'. They truly make it a 5 star experience. Just prior to arrival, we were informed by e-mail that we had a complimentary upgrade to a Penthouse Veranda Stateroom (possibly because we had sailed with Viking in the past). Cabins are very comfortable and spacious with lots of storage within. Little things like a heated bathroom floor are abundant and well thought out. The cabin attendants are quick, thorough and very well trained. The ship graciously provides you with a list of the room's contents...and relative value should you decide to tuck something in your suitcase upon departure. You are free to bring whatever alcoholic beverages with you - unlike the other lines that depend on the 'booze packages' to top up their tills! Every palate is taken into account - from gourmet to buffet - the menus are fresh, innovative, varied and absolutely delicious. Evening menus featuring local cuisine, appropriate wines and attentive table service is spot on! For some reason, my wife and I expected an upper end IKEA atmosphere - instead, we got Neiman Marcus (on steroids). Each of Vikings ocean ships have their own unique venue within. In this case, it is an astrological domed theatre featuring well produced movies on space and the arctic experience. An intimate gathering with comfortable seating and about 6 projectors to generate a state of the art presentation. It is kept fairly cold so may want to bring a jacket - or the cashmere blanket from your stateroom! Every member of the staff from the Captain to the maintenance man looks you straight in the eye and says hello - and asks (sincerely) how your day is going. If a member of the staff is not working up to expectation - they seem to disappear for a day - then surface a day later with a broad smile, attitude adjustment and increased efficiency. They do not treat the passengers with an underlying distain that many cruise line staff seem to purvey. When asked "What's it like to work for Viking?" without fail, they are very complimentary about the personnel management policies, hours of work, perks and staff accommodation. The majority of the guides hired for the on-shore excursions are, educated, entertaining, enthusiastic, and experienced. Accents can be a bit of a challenge from time to time but Viking expects a report card at then end of the tour ensuring that the guide performed up to Viking expectations. Unfortunately the shipboard WiFi can be a little flakey if you are using your own laptop of cell phone. There is a bank of 6 hardwired computers on the main deck along with a printer should you happen to need one. In summation, we expected great - and got an 'over the top' experience. Viking deserves the accolades it receives from the various travel organizations. Would we spend this much again for a cruise? If it is with Viking, the answer is yes! Read Less

My husband and I wanted to visit the Mediterranean area and felt this cruise itinerary was a perfect way to get a taste of many countries. We enjoyed all of the ports and felt prepared for each day due to the great info provided in the shore talks. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. The ship was beautiful and there were a wealth of activities for us. We enjoyed all of the musical options available every day. The food in the restaurants was diverse and delicious. We tried all of the restaurants. One of my favorite places was the restaurant we would go to for breakfast, can’t remember name, but you could eat your breakfast outside on the deck and enjoy the beautiful views and warm weather. I tell my husband all the time “I’d go back on that ship tomorrow!” We met many interesting fellow passengers onboard. In fact, we have continued to meet up with travelers from our area. Overall, this was an amazing trip and I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks to all the Viking Orion staff for making this awesome trip possible. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed being on a Viking riverboat and wanted to try a larger, ocean going Viking ship. It was amazing. Not only was it absolutely beautiful but it seemed music was everywhere. The central area seemed to have musicians playing whenever we passed by, but there were great musical shows in the theatre as well. On board was an intimate planetarium with two movies literally surrounding the guests. We enjoyed all three pools, the infinity, the large indoor and the quiet spa pool, and found swimming was a great way to counter the absolutely wonderful food on Board. Every single dish we selected was delicious. We tried the Italian restaurant twice, and next time I will reserve it for even more nights. However, the brightly decorated Norwegian restaurant was the most fun, with limitless lax and other great entrees and desserts. As with the river cruise, we could go on free tours at every stop. We found them well-organized with excellent guides. Even at those ports we had been to in the past, the tours were so educational. We never felt rushed or crowded and were taken to unusual spots, like the most elegant wine-tasting in a noble’s manse. Our room was the nicest one we have ever had on a ship. It was a balcony room with more drawers that we could possibly fill up. But that was good to know, as we can’t wait to go on a longer trip and have made plans to go on the Viking’s Buenos Aires to Santiago cruise in Feb. 2020. Read Less

We had cruised four times with Viking River Cruises so we knew what to expect from Viking. Viking did not let us down!!! The cabins were large with a veranda. Crew was fabulous - definitely up to Viking standards! Dining was extraordinary. Prepared well and the service was fantastic. Of course the included wine with every meal helped the meals go down smoothly! Enertainment was thoroughly enjoyable! Ranged form opera to a flautist to curent musical productions. Fitness room and sauna was exceptional. The 'snow room' in heir sauna aera was unique. It complemented the whirlpool and dry and wet saunas. Excursions at eah port of call were great. Embarkation and debarkation were handled as only Viking can do! Truly exceptional We only vacation with Viking now! Read Less

We initially chose the cruise because of the itinerary was to places we wanted to visit. We didn't realize until onboard this was the maiden voyage. There were a few hiccups and some things that needed tending to -- as in "we are waiting for the shower door seals to catch up to us." Our cabin was very spacious and there was plenty of room to store all of our clothes and such. The bathroom as well had lots of space and the shower was very roomy. The balcony was spacious and allowed us to sit comfortably at the table and not feel cramped. The only downside was the coffee maker. It was a Nespresso but did not come with the pods. Instead there was instant coffee and tea. That was not the probleml. The problem was there were no clear instructions on how to operate when you don't stick a pod in. I thought I was following the instructions, but sometimes I got hot water and other times not. I am hoping this has been corrected. Dining was terrific. I think we just managed to hit all of the options. It was nice to be waited on and then have the option for burgers, deli or the buffet. Dining al fresco was also nice. Afternoon tea, when onboard, was delightful. There were plenty of activities to keep us busy onboard. Entertainment was great and the places to listen to music were many. The total surprise was the planeterium on board. We went every opportunity we could. The onboard astronomers were very knowledgeable and they were more than willing to share their expertise. They even scheduled extra nights so they could point out new stars/planets in the sky. The "educational" speakers, too, knew their subjects and made what could be a dry subject very entertaining. We tried not to miss them. All of the personnel were friendly and anxious to help you out. Our cabin steward was amazing. Any request, no matter how small, and he was delighted to fulfill them. My daughter used the fitness center and we partook of the spa and other areas. My only complaint was the sauna/hot tub area closed too early. We would have used it more, but time constraints with other activities forced us to choose them over relaxing in the spa. There were lots of excursions, almost too many, I wanted to go on several of them. It was hard to choose. I traveled with my parents and my daughter and all of us agreed it was a great experience. We will definitely be on another Viking cruise in the near future. Read Less

Researched, seemed like it offered more, although pricey. Totally worth every penny! The staff was very professional, well-informed. We have to give great compliments to our main restaurant servers/attendants, Shendy, Hengky, Casper, Gorky, Zharko, Khadafi. I'm sorry, can't recall all, but these definitely stood out in service. The room service was also exceptional. Laundry room good, but needed staff to walk us through process as the signs were difficult to understand. The excursions were outstanding! The tours, guides were the best. We did get lost when my mother had to use the bathroom in Dubrovnik Walking Tour. Would have been nice if the guide waited as it was, I recall, a 4 hour tour, no bathroom break, just pointed to ladies room with long line ahead. Reason why we lost her. Also, cancellation of paid, not included tour policy is not acceptable for those that are unable to do, after previous day's tour. A lot of walking for my 87 year old mother that was too tired the following day to do the paid tour. Had to wait for refund, only if someone on waiting list. Luckily, one person was interested, therefore, we were refunded for the pricey tour excursion.Something that needs correction. All in all, we are going on another cruise in 2019, and 2020. Wouldn't do any other overseas cruise unless it's Viking! Read Less

It had the itinerary I was looking for. My wife always wanted to visit Rome and this cruise allowed for that. The size of the ship and the number of passengers was a big plus. I have been on other cruises that had several thousand people on board and that was too crowded. The fact that the age was restricted to keep small children away. Not having to fight for a spot in the pools or hot tubs was great. With the smaller number of passengers the service felt more personal. The crew was always ther waiting to help and not having to rush because they were keep so busy. The option of selecting where to eat and who to sit with made the dining experience more enjoyable. We loved the Viking River Cruises so wanted to try the ocean cruise and also wanted to see China. For the most part we were very pleased. The cabin and service were excellent. The food was good but not excellent. Their waffles were inedible. We tried the chef's table two times - both times the food was too spicy. Since there was a limited menu choice, we opted to skip eating there. Embarkation was ok but could have been better. Because we all landed too early to get on the boat, they took us to a hotel conference room. That was fine, but they had limited food which disappeared before everyone had a chance to get some. The people coming in after us, had no food. Most of the shore excursions were good, but others were lacking. The walking tour of Hong Kong was a total waste of time. The magic show and cultural history was fantastic. We had Viking book our airfare. We were very unhappy with their service. On one flight they put us in the very last row. There were plenty of seats available so I could move us, but was not pleased that they put us in the worst seats on the plane. On the American flight to Hong Kong from L.A. we were packed in like sardines in the most uncomfortable seating arrangement ever. I was disappointed that Viking did not reach out to us before the cruise about the situation in Hong Kong. I know a lot of people cancelled their trip. I had expected some information from Viking about the situation and how it might effect our time and safety in Hong Kong. We took the extended tour to Beijing. We were disappointed that Viking had not warned us that it was week of China's celebration of their country's 70th anniversary. The crowds were so large. Not sure we would have booked the extension if we had known. Overall we were very pleased with our cruise, but we feel Viking could have done better in some areas. Read Less

This was our second Viking Ocean cruise with similar experiences on both. Viking Ocean's ships are beautifully designed and maintained. The entire ship feels like a comfortable, high end living room, with cozy nooks throughout, lovely Scandinavian furnishings and art work, and innovative larger public spaces (this extends to cabin decor as well). Cabins are well lit with very comfortable beds and well thought out enhancements (ie. a lit vanity storage area, heated bathroom floors, some of the largest showers at sea etc.). The entire staff is cheery, helpful and welcoming, never passing by without a warm greeting. The ship has an excellent 'culture'. BUT........our positive experience was marred by poor dining room service and, to some degree by weak food offerings/preparation/quality. While we had this impression on our first Viking Ocean cruise we thought this problem was unique to that ship but, to our great disappointment, we had a duplicate experience on the Orion. Dining room service was slow and disjointed. On both cruises breakfast in the dining room was a slow affair with dishes as simple as plain pancakes taking as long as 40 minutes to prepare. On this past cruise, on one occasion when I finally did get my pancakes, they were raw and oozing of batter. On the first cruise those same pancakes were presented cold after the long wait. On this cruise, on one occasion, we entered the dining room for dinner at 7:30 with our party of 6, got our appetizers in about 15 minutes, but, at 9:00 still hadn't received our main courses. We were told that there was a slip-up with the waiter's automated ordering system, yet the waiter didn't have the sense or initiative to check on things when they were going way too long! Other dinners dragged as well, with waiters needing to be reminded of how long we had waited. Food quality was 'spotty'. Steaks and hamburgers were consistently excellent. Fish was understandably freshest at the start of the cruise, but quickly dropped off to 'only acceptable' at best (in freshness and consistency). Prepared dishes were quite greasy, and it was difficult to find appealing choices on the daily menu (often resulting in our moving to the left side of the menu----standard dishes always available). Baked goods were always excellent. The buffet at the World Cafe was also inconsistent. At one breakfast my husband took a serving spoon full of the prepared scrambled eggs. When back at his seat he saw the bottom of the scoop was green and mushy and he called over staff to point this out lest there was some danger to eating them. Bacon was often so over-cooked it was beyond crispy, requiring great effort to cut into. Buffet choices at lunch and dinner often included a variety of 'rubber chicken', fish masked by a heavy sauce, some type of carved meat, and standards such as rice, veggies and potatoes. Salad offerings were varied and fresh tasting. The buffet sushi offering at dinner was always excellent. Read Less

Just did Beijing to Hong Kong (October 2019). The Viking Orion is a beautiful machine, and the crew is superb. The food quality, preparation, and presentation are not good. Many of the meat dishes were not edible. The talk of the ship was: 'how can the #1 cruise line put out such a poor food product?' Guests who were staying on the ship for more ports in Asia were plotting pizza delivery to the ship. Particularly striking was the excellence of the non-food crew who were uniformly excellent. The ship remained perfectly on schedule. The passenger interfaces were excellent. The excursions were a 50-50 kind of thing -- half good and half poorly executed. In hindsight, I should have gone with recommendations from Trip Advisor. Particularly vexing was a repeated plan of dropping guests in some site that deserved ten minutes and saying 'we will have one hour free time now'. Cannot imagine that Viking can retain such a high rating with such poor food service! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had never been to Japan. We would have appreciated more lectures and information in depth about the places we visited. The excursions were satisfactory, but they were very crowded with 30 plus people on the bus and some of the guides were difficult to understand. Some of the excursions were quite expensive and the included excursions tended to be good except that they were crowded. One guest lecturer was excellent, and one rather repeated the first lecturer. I would have appreciated more lectures. The entertainment was good in most cases, except for one vocalist. Our stateroom was lovely, and very comfortable. Our room attendant was excellent. The wine offered was of very low quality. The pool and spa area were terrific, as was the fitness center. Manfredi's was a very good choice for dining. The laundry service was excellent and very appreciated. I would not recommend going to Japan in September, as it was very humid and hot. Read Less

Having been on several river cruises with Viking which we love doing, we thought we’d book an Ocean cruise with Viking for our ruby wedding anniversaries. . We were a bit frustrated before going on the cruise owing to the system in place for booking trips. Seemed to be class driven. I.e. the more you paid the better the choice. We couldn’t book a morning trip on all the included trips and some of the paid trips. In fact some of the trips we had booked paid or otherwise were changed by the time we got on board. We had to faff about getting them organised to suit. Wasn’t too much of a problem but we felt the poor girl on guest services must have dreaded seeing us coming towards her. The excursions were good but the qv’s were a disaster. The guides were knowledgeable and fun on the coach but unless you were on their shoulders you couldn’t hear anything, too much static. The excursions were extremely busy too. Had a wonderful cruise on board the Orion. Great cabin, crew, and entertainment. Captain made a good choice by sailing to our second port of call to miss the typhoon that hit Tokyo. All the ports of call were superb but must say Taipei and Hong Kong were favourites. The food was good too but I felt this was the only thing that let you down. The temperature for me was warm as opposed to being hot. Some of the dishes in the world buffet for example the main roast of the day was served very rare. Not good. Some of the meals in the pool area were cooked to order but it was so hot in there that the “sides” were sitting out in all that heat so not too appetising at all. I had a chicken tikka and it was literally skin and bones. Yuk. Don’t get me wrong the chefs would cook you anything asked for which was great and hot but the sides were cool. The seafood dishes and sushi were all fantastic, they were served cold just as they should’ve. The restaurant was disappointing too it was cold in some of the areas and the food was served lukewarm at breakfast and dinner. Service was good at breakfast but a lot slower at dinner. We asked for a Sauvignon Blanc only to be told there wasn’t any so had a different wine which was nice too as is all the wines on offer but disappointed with not getting what we asked for especially when we got it later on in the bar. Enjoyed movies under the stars. The waiter guys up in explorers lounge were fabulous. Robin the whale and dolphin man was lovely. Even though we didn’t see too many whales or dolphins. The doctor was a fun chap. Something else!! This was a special cruise for our ruby wedding anniversaries and overall we did enjoy ourselves but would have to think again before booking a Viking ocean cruise. I don’t feel the experience we’ve had on the river boats have carried well on to the Ocean cruise ships. We maybe expected too much. Read Less

We had one of the best cabin attendants ever on Viking cruises. Lectures were not as good as previous cruises. Limited activities during sea days. Ongoing ship information by the captain very good considering typhoon in area. Embark and disembark very organized and quick. Music by individual piano, violin, and guitar very enjoyable late day and evening. Selected night entertainers very good. . . . .don't need the large group stage shows. Excursions guides very good, well organized leaving and return on time. Site visits excellent and informative even with limited time frame. Would like to have more time in Nagasaki. Speaker at the library was excellent even with interpreters assisting. Hong Kong excursion to Aberdeen was outstanding and a great guide for information provided, managing the group, time at each stop, and general fun to be with on bus. Departure to Hong Kong airport managed very well considering possible protestor problems Read Less
