The ship was immaculate, the food was superb, the spa was wonderful and the service without parallel! So nice to have free drinks and spa! Loved the pure water in my room every day! The special restaurants were wonderful and we dined there more than once without a fee each time! The staff was very friendly and made a point to learn our names. The food was much better than the other 3 cruise lines we’ve been on. MUCH Having free on demand television with current movies and some of our favorite television programs like NCIS (all 3) was also a nice touch! They gave us a shore excursion at every port, it is nice to have but some were less than exciting and you still pay for anything decent. I was afraid I’d miss the entertainment as we have done many Disney cruises but we found plenty to do and the entertainment that was provided was excellent, we especially enjoyed the classical musicians. We Carefully Choose viking Orion for our Alaska cruise when first available in 2016 because of ships open vista views and as a small ship also very importantly the itinerary and full package details . As our first Viking voyage we have been very satisfied and loved the ship it’s ambience decor space and lovely staff. With the amazing Alaskan scenery and fantastic wildlife and wilderness al around us we had one of our best ever holidays thank you viking, We started with a pre cruise in Vancouver lovely city, wonderful hotel by the bay , the pre cruise tour and lunch alfresco after boarding and sail out was lovely with seaplanes landing and taking off around us , and boats of all descriptions paddle steamers , sailing and small pleasure cruising craft to other ships then the cruise up the inside passage humpbacks sighting wonderful scenery sunsets and all enhanced by the ship! Really very good food right through the voyage onboard Orion majority of our meals we ate seafood,. Enjoyed all of the restaurants onboard, open seating only waited the once for a table but seated in restaurant reception with offers of drinks! There’s also a bar in the restaurant where you can have a pre dinner drinks . We enjoyed all our ports of calls and trips with only one complaint about the lunch on our Haines bear search and wildlife tour which was dealt with with a small refund to compensate however no bears seen but then that’s wildlife although we were probably not going to see any as Haines had hosted the state fair a few days earlier, trip highlights amazing Juneau glacier helicopter and dogsledding and glacier and whales trips , Valdez sail out amazing beautiful weather swimming in the infinity pool and hot tub and escorted out by high speed coast guard rigid inflatable with machine gun mounted and manned past all the Valdez salmon fishing fleets which were laying nets ! A James Bond moment! Dinner that evening a favourite with to start soft shell crab , lobster Thermidor and desert a lovely soufflé , with lovely wines and all made exceptional by Alaska delivering with beautiful scenery and Orca’s seen alongside during dinner !!! A Most memorable evening I must also thank the staff on Orion Nearly all were fantastic except for the future cruise lady? The shows on board such a small ship were all delivered by the Orion team and were excellent thank you to Jade And Karine and speedy and the viking band also bar waiters stewards Ivan and Corrinia ? Overall a fantastic holiday experience one of our very best highly recommend this voyage and ship if viking can keep price correct Read Less

We wanted to do the Inside Passage but we also wanted to combine with an inland tour. The Pristine Alaska Extension gave us the best of both worlds. From Fairbanks to Denali to Talkeetna and in-between, excellent tour with varied destinations. Some were a little tacky since so much of Alaska's commerce is cruise and tours. That was to be expected. The train ride between Fairbanks and Denali (Wilderness Express) was a wide eyed excursion that allowed us to see and hear about the topography, wildlife and history. What a wonderful way to ride in a domed railroad car! Other destinations were absolutely wonderful such as The Husky Homestead, Riverboat Discovery and The Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. Once on board Orion, the restaurants are varied and provide a client with an extensive array of food choices. Being gluten free myself, foods are labeled so you don't have to ask about each thing you choose. Attentive and professional wait staff. We indulged in the spa - some of the best massages and facials that I have had. Wonderfully relaxing and refreshing. The staff aboard the Orion were attentive, personable and professional. The ship is very comfortable as are the other Viking ships. From the Explorer Lounge to the Restaurant, all were thoroughly enjoyed. Read Less

After two river cruises we wanted to see Alaska. The Orion was like a large longboat, very familiar and comfortable but with room for many more amenities. We enjoyed the many lounge areas and dining choices. The spa was relaxing and invigorating and the gym was well equipped. The restaurants were well run, the food was excellent and the staff was incredible, always there when needed with a smile. There was always something to do if didn't want to stay in the room. Walking around the ship we always discovered something new, from the sports deck to the shops, the outdoor lounges, the Explorers Lounge, the atrium with its music and game tables, or just having a drink while watching the water. We wish we had been able to reserve more optional shore excursions but many had already been full. The embarkation and check in was lengthy but well organized. We had a quick meal and our luggage was waiting for us in our cabin. Disembarkation was also very organized and we were sorry to get on the bus to leave. Overall it was a very worthwhile trip in the Viking tradition. Read Less

We were reluctant to ever take a cruise base on varied feedback from friends and associates. Ship way to crowded, restaurants busy and crowded. Being nickeled and dimed, etc... THEN WE CAME ACROSS Viking Cruises opening up Ocean routes with new vessels. Alaska intrigued us and of all that we had heard we heard all GREAT on Viking River Cruises. So we said lets give a cruise with Viking a go! Wow, we were overly impressed about everything from boarding to disembarking on the last day. Our cabin was spectacular. Our dining experiences were splendid. We especially enjoyed the reservations required dining. The food was mouth watering the service was attentive and always seeking to please. The evening entertainment. We almost could not wait for the next evening to attend another event they were so good and so entertaining. Excursions at every port were provided plus many that could be purchased . Provided excursions were good, a couple perhaps a little less so -- BUT still good! Read Less

This was our second cruise with Viking Ocean Cruise, and it was great again. All administrative issues prior, during and at the end of the cruise were perfect. The ship is really amazing, with very spacious and beautiful public areas and very nice rooms. The food is excellent and the staff are especially attentive, polite and helpful. The atmosphere is very pleasant, quiet and relaxing. The on-board activities and lectures were educational and interesting. We enjoyed the cruise a lot. it's quite expensive but worth the cost. Again, we booked our next (third) ocean cruise with Viking during this cruise, as well as a river cruise this summer. My only comment to Viking is that they do not nurture enough their loyal customers. Discounts or upgrades are minimal or none. I asked to receive proposal for last minute cruises but never received a reply or an offer. The Viking experience is especially recommended to people at or above 60 who appreciate the unique qualities of Viking. Read Less

Wanted to visit Alaska for years for the scenery. This cruise was everything we could have hoped for. We did a Rockies extension beforehand and that was a great idea as we made good friends on that part of the holiday who we were able to meet up with on the ship. Our stateroom was very roomy 8019 and we had complimentary laundry service which was very useful. Staff on board were brilliant and we can’t fault any aspect of the service. Food was excellent, although there could have been more variety of potatoes available at dinner. Attended two talks which were very interesting and a couple of shows in the theatre. Excursions were very good value for money and not too crowded. As usual they were well organised. An excellent cruise which enabled us to enjoy our holiday of a lifetime. We’re already booked on another ocean cruise next year. Thanks Viking! Read Less

We had been on another Viking Ocean Cruise (Empires of the Mediterranean) and loved everything about it. Plus, for a long time, we've been very interested in going to Alaska. That combination made the decision very easy when Viking announced it was starting Alaska Inside Passage trips! We were again completely delighted with everything both on board and on shore. Our cabin had plenty of space. The ship has lots of food options, and all very tasty. We appreciated the lack of dress code. There are plenty of activities on board...but you could also do nothing if you wanted to...lots of places to curl up with a book. We would (and most likely will!) go on another Viking Ocean Cruise. We also loved the shore excursions. It was hard to choose, and many were pretty pricey, but we were happy with what we selected and how we chose to spend our very limited additional budget. Flightseeing is not to be missed. Thank you, Viking! Read Less

We are not travelers. This trip was perfection. The ship, its design and appointments, crew...all perfection. Every detail, every comfort. I think I could be talked into living aboard! The hotel in Vancouver for extended stay was lovely, with a spectacular view. The brunch one of the best ever. On the cruise, the food and service were superb. I had the pool to myself most mornings. The lectures and TED talks were highlights, as was the planetarium 3D film on the Sami reindeer culture. Icy Straight Point and the town of were highlights. Sitka was a disappointment. We visited museums and galleries wherever we went, and they were a joy. I do wish there was still a formal or dressy night option. The musicians throughout the ship were fabulous. Would have enjoyed a tour of the mechanical levels of the ship. The concierge services were repeatedly helpful and informative. The daily newsletter, and the onscreen itinerary maps onscreen in the rooms were much appreciated. Best cruise ever! Read Less

We chose Alaska because my parents lived in Alaska before I was born and I have always wanted to go. We chose Viking because we had taken the Viking River Cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest -- and LOVED it! We loved the smallness, the service, the food, the sightseeing! Everything about it made us want to take an Ocean Cruise with Viking. And we found the same positives on the Orion. It was much larger--but small for an ocean liner. No negatives --all positive experiences. We have talked to people who have taken other cruises and find that Viking is the premier way to go. The cabins were large and well equipped. So many things that cost extra on other lines are standard on Viking. Once you are onboard nothing is extra unless you want to take one of the additional excursions. I loved not having to worry about paying for extras, because they were all included--including the gratuities! Now we have to save up for the next cruise. I have my eye on the "Tulips and Windmills" River Cruise, but there are many river and ocean cruises that I would be thrilled to take. I love visiting the food and culture of the countries we see. One thing I wish had been arranged was transportation (like golf carts) from the gangplank to the tour busses or trains. With limited mobility I chose not to attempt some of the included excursions. I now have an electric mobility cart that I hope will be allowed on my next cruise. Fortunately, there were places to sit along the way from our cabin to the dining room and theater. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had loved our river cruise with Viking and wanted to try our first ocean cruise with them. We liked the idea of a smaller ship and no kids. The itinerary sounded good and we were interested in the pre and post extensions. My husband and I selected the 5-day Denali extension. The train was a wonderful experience as we relaxed in the glass domed car and watched the gorgeous scenery go by! The food on the train was really good as well. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun. We went into the park on a park bus with a naturalist learned a lot. We wished we could have gone further into the park. The included dinner buffet was just acceptable. The hotels were nice and scenery was amazing! Talkeetna was a great town with arts and crafts along with good food. We boarded our ship in Seward and took the Kenai Fjords optional excursion. Great views of puffins, Stellar sea lions, humpback whales and sea otters. Holgate glacier was wonderful and we were very near! In Valdez we took the optional Wrangell-St Elias excursion and were surrounded by stunning mountain views and waterfalls. We took the optional small boat whale watching excursion at Icy Straight Point and couldn’t have been more thrilled with the Orcas! There was a pod by our boat that was no more than 5 feet away! We enjoyed Skagway with the Gold Rush Cemetary and the Red Onion Saloon. The trip through the White Pass was a disappointment as it was all fogged in as usual. We took the included excursion in Juneau to Mendenhall glacier and the salmon hatchery. The scenery at the glacier and Brotherhood Bridge couldn’t have been more beautiful with the fireweed blooming! I recommend taking the tram up the Mt Roberts -great views and interesting exhibits! The raptor center and bear sanctuary in Sitka were interesting. We opted for the 2 day extension in Vancouver. Unfortunately, the transfer to the bus was poorly managed and we all stood on concrete for the better part of an hour before we were able to board the bus. The city tour was great and very inclusive of all the city sights. We loved Vancouver! Friendly people, great seafood and gorgeous! The only disappointment was that Viking had scheduled our flight out at 6:20 AM which meant our time in Vancouver was cut short and we had to get up at 2AM. We tried for at least 6 months to change the flight and were never able to change it. We even paid the extra charge to try to do so. The airport did not function well at that time of the morning. We stood in long lines for almost 2 hours and had to load our own luggage on to the conveyor belt. Poor ending for a magnificent trip. Our cabin on the ship was great! Roomy with great amenities. It was a Penthouse Veranda. The food on the ship was great. We liked the general buffet and Manfreddi’s best. The ship size was perfect! The guest lecturers were very informative and if we missed a lecture they were recorded to watch in our cabin at leisure. Read Less

Do the helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier and dog sledding. Loved the train ride and the excursion on the Deadliest sea boat. Manifred I had excellent steaks. Loved not always having announcements, no children, and older crowd. This was our 2nd cruise with Viking. The spa is wonderful. The pools excellent. Bar service is above all other. Entertainment could be a little better. Love having wine, beer, soft drinks included. And being able to stay pre or post at beginning and end ports. Airfare is great. We joined my brother Mike Martin, his wife Sherry on this cruise. My brother had wanted to sail the Inside Passage on an Alaskan cruise. My husband and I had cruised to Alaska on two other occasions but enjoyed it so much that we were glad to go again. The embarkation went smoothly. I was glad we didn't have to wait to board ship when we arrived at the dock. For desembarkation I suggest that passengers be made aware that they can wait onboard until their color group is called My cabin review is below. Our dining experience was excellent due to the expertise of the kitchen staff. The consistently provided us delicious meals. The wait staff were always very friendly and attentive to our needs. We thoroughly enjoyed the Orion Vocalists performances, especially the ABBA Songbook and the Beatles Songbook. We also very much enjoyed the Viking Classical Duo performance of Movie Magic. We enjoyed our shore excursions especially the Kenai Fjords by boat near Seward, the Columbia Glacier Cruise near Valdez and the Potlach Totem Park near Ketchikan. Read Less

Everything about the cruise was top notch. Accommodations were outstanding and we really enjoyed the variety of dining options and special events. We especially enjoyed trying the steam and regular saunas, cold plunge pool and 'snow' room ... quite a unique experience. There were learning experiences at every turn from pictures with explanatory plaques lining the hallways to the displayed artwork with attached narratives. However, the thing that continues to make Viking our favorite cruise line is the service. We didn't encounter one surly or indifferent crew member. We were so amazed that we ended up asking the ones we became close to why they chose Viking and, to a person, they said that the overall package and treatment Viking extends to them is far better than cruise line(s) they had worked for before. The theme was that Viking was 'family' and they were treated as such. We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience. Read Less

Alaska has been on our bucket list for years, and when Viking announced they would be sailing to Alaska we jumped at the opportunity, having experienced a Viking River Cruise in 2014, the Romantic Danube. The Viking Orion had not yet been completed when we made our reservations, so watching her development was exciting. Viking truly has transported the finest of their river cruise ships into their ocean cruise ships, and it felt like coming home when we boarded at Seward. One aspect of the cruise that was attractive to us was the specific itinerary that included more of Alaska than just the fabled Inside Passage. We did the pre-cruise extension in Anchorage, where Viking picked us up at the Anchorage airport and transported us to the Anchorage Hilton for 2 nights, then onward from Anchorage to Seward to join the ship. The weather was not always cooperative and in Seward it was raining and chilly outside, but warm and welcoming onboard. Embarkation was smooth and fast, and the primary downside was the distance we had to walk from the point where we cleared security to the ship itself mostly in the rain. From then on the weather was either cloudy and cool or clouds and sun. Valdez was beautiful, sunny and clear; overcast at Hubbard Glacier and Icy Strait Point and Skagway, sunny and warm at Juneau, mostly sunny at Sitka, cloudy at Ketchikan, and gloriously sunny on arrival at Vancouver. Of the many attributes offered by Viking, having all outside cabins with balconies was a definite plus, the small size was wonderful with just 930 passengers, and perhaps the one consistent comment we heard was how thankful our shipmates were that there were no children (us included). Folks, this is not a party ship, yet it packs in more entertainment options than are possible to sample in the 11 days we had available. We would definitely cruise again with Viking Ocean and River Cruises. Read Less

Dining choices were plentiful, delicious with fabulous service. We never felt crowded and enjoyed all the different spaces to relax. So happy to be on a smaller cruise ship. We were so glad not to fuss with formal nights. The enrichment program provides all kinds of wonderful experiences and opportunities. The included and optional excursions were plentiful with so many choices, we could of spent numerous days at any one port. Loved all our excursions. The My Viking Journey web link was great! We traveled with family, which made the cruise even more enjoyable. Our cabin steward was always there and attentive. Laundry service was a pleasant surprise. The binoculars in the cabin could have been bigger though. Oh - One other thing - For our bus trip at the end of the cruise from Seward to Anchorage we were not told we we going to making sightseeing stops along the way. Also the Hubbard glacier was amazing and to be so close to it. We seen it calve 2x while we were there. The entertainment was fantastic. We never had trouble finding a comfortable table. The poolside specialty buffets were excellent, especially the seafood buffet. The restaurants were elegant and it was nice to have specialty restaurants at no additional charge. The entertainers were friendly and often visited with passengers in the restaurants and lounges. We could always find a quiet place to read or relax and it never felt crowded. We loved the observatory, the entertainment, and the food. Our room was excellent. We are loyal Viking River Cruisers and we wanted to try an ocean cruise. Alaska was our first choice. We did not see much of Vancouver, only the ride from the airport. Embarkation was somewhat confusing, but this is probably because we were not used to the procedure. The ship and the cabin were wonderful as were the dining choices. Since we are both in our 70's and not as adventurous as some of our co-passengers, we were somewhat limited in our optional shore activities. We did enjoy the excursions we took as well as the beautiful scenery and wildlife. We especially enjoyed whale watching and Glacier Gardens. The glacier visit was amazing and we were impressed with the way the captain moved the ship so that everyone got three full views. We actually watched from our cabin balcony. The staff is expertly trained and you couldn't help but fall in love with them; from the cooks, bartenders, housekeepers, and coffee/tea servers. No matter where you went it was never too crowded. The infinity pool and sauna were a delight as we sailed past glaciers and beautiful scenery. Had a Nordic treatment with heat and the ice room and it was amazing. This was my first large ocean cruise and my first time to Alaska. I reviewed other cruise lines and Viking had the best overall rating for money spent and I would 100% agree. The ship was spotless at all times. It was roomy and we never felt there were more than 100 people on board when in actuality there were over 900. There were so many quiet spaces to read or just rest. I rarely spent time in my room other than to sleep. The staff was amazing!! They were all professional, friendly, and attentive but not smothering. The food in all restaurants was superb. It was fresh from beginning of the trip to the end. Viking Orion did not disappoint, the crew were just as helpful and polite. As well as all the interesting information from the guides I also visited the onboard Heritage Centre and from the exhibit 'Are you a Viking' discovered where the thick tissue on the palm of my left hand by the small finger comes from. We took a whale watching extra tour and we did see whales, sea otters and sealions, my wife was very happy. All Viking ocean ships have a good variety of dining options and it is good to vary experiences.
