Everything about the cruise was top notch. Accommodations were outstanding and we really enjoyed the variety of dining options and special events. We especially enjoyed trying the steam and regular saunas, cold plunge pool and 'snow' room ... quite a unique experience. There were learning experiences at every turn from pictures with explanatory plaques lining the hallways to the displayed artwork with attached narratives. However, the thing that continues to make Viking our favorite cruise line is the service. We didn't encounter one surly or indifferent crew member. We were so amazed that we ended up asking the ones we became close to why they chose Viking and, to a person, they said that the overall package and treatment Viking extends to them is far better than cruise line(s) they had worked for before. The theme was that Viking was 'family' and they were treated as such. We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience. Read Less

Alaska has been on our bucket list for years, and when Viking announced they would be sailing to Alaska we jumped at the opportunity, having experienced a Viking River Cruise in 2014, the Romantic Danube. The Viking Orion had not yet been completed when we made our reservations, so watching her development was exciting. Viking truly has transported the finest of their river cruise ships into their ocean cruise ships, and it felt like coming home when we boarded at Seward. One aspect of the cruise that was attractive to us was the specific itinerary that included more of Alaska than just the fabled Inside Passage. We did the pre-cruise extension in Anchorage, where Viking picked us up at the Anchorage airport and transported us to the Anchorage Hilton for 2 nights, then onward from Anchorage to Seward to join the ship. The weather was not always cooperative and in Seward it was raining and chilly outside, but warm and welcoming onboard. Embarkation was smooth and fast, and the primary downside was the distance we had to walk from the point where we cleared security to the ship itself mostly in the rain. From then on the weather was either cloudy and cool or clouds and sun. Valdez was beautiful, sunny and clear; overcast at Hubbard Glacier and Icy Strait Point and Skagway, sunny and warm at Juneau, mostly sunny at Sitka, cloudy at Ketchikan, and gloriously sunny on arrival at Vancouver. Of the many attributes offered by Viking, having all outside cabins with balconies was a definite plus, the small size was wonderful with just 930 passengers, and perhaps the one consistent comment we heard was how thankful our shipmates were that there were no children (us included). Folks, this is not a party ship, yet it packs in more entertainment options than are possible to sample in the 11 days we had available. We would definitely cruise again with Viking Ocean and River Cruises. Read Less

We have had the opportunity to go on two Viking River cruises and wanted to try an Ocean Viking Cruise. Alaska has been on our bucket list for years and we knew Viking was the way to go. Viking has EVERY THING covered. From the moment you are met at the airport you are taken care of. The ship was beautiful and sparkling clean. Our cabin spacious and room Stuart outstanding. Dining choices were plentiful, delicious with fabulous service. We never felt crowded and enjoyed all the different spaces to relax. So happy to be on a smaller cruise ship. We were so glad not to fuss with formal nights. The enrichment program provides all kinds of wonderful experiences and opportunities. The included and optional excursions were plentiful with so many choices, we could of spent numerous days at any one port. Loved all our excursions. The My Viking Journey web link was great! We were prepared, organized and well informed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and exploring on the link. Making reservations for excursions and special dining plans helpful. My husband and I even made reservations for our next Viking cruise to the Mediterranean! Read Less

We chose Viking for the tranquil atmosphere and small ships. The service was top notch. The food in all the restaurant was excellent. The included excursions were ok, but the paid excursions were much much better. It was my husband’s first cruise. We liked it so much that we have signed on for two more Viking cruises! We traveled with family, which made the cruise even more enjoyable. Our cabin steward was always there and attentive. Laundry service was a pleasant surprise. The binoculars in the cabin could have been bigger though. Oh - One other thing - For our bus trip at the end of the cruise from Seward to Anchorage we were not told we we going to making sightseeing stops along the way. We thought we were going directly to Anchorage, and had made our own plans there that we had to cancel. Next time we would like to have all the information ahead of time. Read Less

Arrived in Vancouver and went directly to the ship. Our luggage was at our state room when we arrived. we were greeted by ship staff. we enjoyed a beverage on our balcony as we departed. we enjoyed all breakfast ,lunch and dinners aboard the Orion. We were pampered in every way possible. All the ports that we attended were very interesting and very well organized. This is one of the best trips that my wife and I have ever been on travelling with Viking. One of our favorite excursions was the dog sled training area. Also the Hubbard glacier was amazing and to be so close to it. We seen it calve 2x while we were there. The entertainment was fantastic. We watched each night in the Star Lounge the young and gifted entertainers put there musical talents to work. The ships band was awesome as we were entertained by them each in in the Torshavn. I recommend this trip to anyone. Don't wait till your to old to enjoy the beautiful Alaska sites. Read Less

We had been on many of the cruise lines in the past but really preferred the river cruise to the save my pool lounge chair mentality. So we thought we would give Viking Ocean cruise a try due to the number of people. We are so glad we did... specialty dining was so great. Easy dealing with food allergies too. The World Cafe was our choice most of the time. Great selection and after a full day of excursions we enjoyed cocktails and casual dining. The spa is the surprise. Beautiful facility open for all for free without scheduling a service. We enjoyed that daily. We also took advantage of the silver package. The wines and top shelf vodka was such a deal!! We are planning our next and will be going with Viking again. Alaska vista was indescribable, the captain did an amazing job getting us so close to Hubbard glacier and rotating 360 so everyone had a front row seat! Thanks to all Read Less

The ship, staff and food were over the top. The variety of food was always tasty and beautifully displayed. Loved the gelato and the changing of flavors everyday. The staff is expertly trained and you couldn't help but fall in love with them; from the cooks, bartenders, housekeepers, and coffee/tea servers. No matter where you went it was never too crowded. The infinity pool and sauna were a delight as we sailed past glaciers and beautiful scenery. Had a Nordic treatment with heat and the ice room and it was amazing. For the price and the experience it was so worth it. That memory reruns in my mind often. Loved, loved, loved this trip! We had two excursions that went to private islands and they were awesome. Everything is well planned and executed to perfection. Yes, we paid for extra for the excursions, but they were wonderful. The entertainment was wonderful, and we enjoyed the staff's night when they all came out. Read Less

This was my first large ocean cruise and my first time to Alaska. I reviewed other cruise lines and Viking had the best overall rating for money spent and I would 100% agree. The ship was spotless at all times. It was roomy and we never felt there were more than 100 people on board when in actuality there were over 900. There were so many quiet spaces to read or just rest. I rarely spent time in my room other than to sleep. The staff was amazing!! They were all professional, friendly, and attentive but not smothering. The food in all restaurants was superb. It was fresh from beginning of the trip to the end. The included excursions were good, some better than others but the extra cost ones were wonderful. There was so much to do each day if you wanted to join. The spa was wonderful and well worth the extra money spent. I highly recommend Viking Alaskan cruise to anyone who wants a trip without a 24/7 party, huge lines, and kids. Read Less

We visited Canada and the Inside Passage to Alaska, and it truly met our expectations and more. We have 7 days pre cruise in the Rockies which was outstanding with lovely hotels and scenery. The ship was excellent with plenty of room and open spaces. The restaurant food was delicious, and we tended to eat there most nights, as we prefered it to the set menus of the Chefs Table. the service was superb, and all the staff were very friendly. Our room service was also excellent. We requested a kettle for tea instead of coffee machine and extra hangers on arrival, and they came within 10 minutes. The staff were used for most of th evening entertainment and were very good. My husband particularly enjoyed the daily lectures. The main aim for choosing this cruise was to see whales, we have sailed with Viking before on the Homelands cruise on Viking Sky so knew what to expect. Viking Orion did not disappoint, the crew were just as helpful and polite. As well as all the interesting information from the guides I also visited the onboard Heritage Centre and from the exhibit 'Are you a Viking' discovered where the thick tissue on the palm of my left hand by the small finger comes from. We took a whale watching extra tour and we did see whales, sea otters and sealions, my wife was very happy. All Viking ocean ships have a good variety of dining options and it is good to vary experiences. The restaurant is our favourite with one visit to Manfredi's for a special meal, but the World Café is just as good, just different. I would recommend the Port Talks as they give more information about what you will be doing next. Read Less

Chose Viking because of a wonderful experience with their Danube cruise. Viking has very well trained individuals working with them. We too picked the Orion as it was one of the smaller vessels in the Alaskan area with only about 900 guests. Many times we wondered where all of the people were... The Orion has so many quiet areas where you may sit or lounge. Our cabin steward was fantastic, almost overly so. The Orion was fairly new and so very well decorated. Would love to go on more Viking cruises. Wish they had a cruise just sailing in and around the Greek Isles. We too might look at the New Zealand and Australian cruise. I was not impressed with the handling of the arriving and the check in at our departure hotel. The Viking associates were not very helpful there. When we took the Danube cruise, the post hotel experience was wonderful with sight seeing and dining suggestions. Glad that we did not have fancy or dress up nights. I believe that Viking has the best overall product on the market. The cruise ship was up to Viking normal high standards. The cabin was well prepared and continually tidied and readied..the cabin service usually forgot we didn`t wanted our beds turned back etc but minor point. We were very fortunate with some excellent weather throughout the voyage. The atmosphere on board was very relaxed throughout. The food was excellent and we much prefer the more relaxed format in the self service area as standards are not compromised at all. Mrs Wood`s hair appointment was average. Some of the included excursions were disappointing and the game needs to be upped here as we felt this was part of pushing you to pay for the far better extras ones. One of them just dropped us off in town to do our own thing.Juneau excursion was unnecessarily rushed and we had little time to enjoy the glacier facilities etc.Our extra whale watching at Icy strait Point was very good indeed. The lectures and talks were generally very good and the delivery was interesting and relaxed with most but not all of them.Kathy Slamp we found the best of them. Read Less

Priori river cruise with Viking and had a wonderful experience. Food was fantastic, service was stellar, everything was fantastic. The ports of call were interesting, shore excursions were very good (although, pricey, but that is common in Alaska). Loved the fact that they had a non-denominational Sunday service for those who were interested in attending and unable to get to a place of worship due to cruise schedule. Staff goes to great lengths to ensure you have everything you need. Disembarkation and embarkation procedures were thoroughly explained and went smoothly. My only two suggestions for improvement would be instead of having to use the room key for everything, arm bands with the chip would be much more convenient, and more show times for the on board planetarium. Fitness center was awesome, plenty of equipment. I took advantage of the opportunity for a massage and the spa was wonderful as well. Read Less

The ports were great and organized for the excursions . The service is bar none they know you name and your wine choice at the dining rooms after a day or two. The servers are very friendly and get to know you . The cleaning crew is also wonderful doing anything to make you feel at home. I chose this cruise because my husband and I wanted to see Alaska--but not on a huge ship. The Orion was perfect with passengers numbering about 950. The ship was beautiful and our deluxe veranda cabin was great. The ship had everything a person could ask for. The dining options provided ambience, amazing choices, and delicious food. There was plenty to do onboard--special presentations, cocktail lounges with musical entertainment, dancing, and shows with terrific talent. There was a pool and games on deck and in the lounges. My husband also used the fitness center which was very important to him since he interrupted a physical therapy regimen to go on the trip. Finally, the staff was above compare. The included excursions were fine but carefully chosen extra excursions really added to the trip. We chose the helicopter/dog mushing in Seward (expensive but worth the splurge), glacier sightseeing by boat, Skagway by Streetcar, the railroad ride to White Pass, and whale watching. One suggsestion for couples traveling together. Book the same category room. My husband and I booked the deluxe veranda but my cousin and her husband, with whom we were traveling, booked one level up--the deluxe veranda with more square footage. We did not know that they would be able to book restaurants and excursions 10 days before we could. We had planned our choices ahead of time, but most of what we had chosen was not available to us 10 days after they booked. However, we enjoyed this trip so much that we booked a river cruise (our second cruise) with Viking for next year. Read Less

The Viking Orion is a beautiful ship and the staff keep it looking brand new every day. We particularly enjoyed the various dining options - the World Cafe, The Restaurant and the pool side cafe. Each has its own ambience and type of service, but each is equal in quality and service. We also enjoyed a session in the planetarium which is new for Viking Ocean. Something different that we enjoyed. Spent several sessions in the Spa and had wonderful treatments. Felt like new people when we left. We spaced them between the more demanding excursion days so that we would be relaxed after those days. Treatments were professional and awesome. Thought the overall experience was wonderful! We previously sailed on the Viking Idi/Viking Kvasir on the Rhine Getaway river cruise in June, 2016 and had such a great time we immediately booked the Alaska and the Inside Passage cruise on the Viking Orion as soon as this itinerary became available in April, 2017. We were not disappointed. We have sailed on two previous ocean cruises (before Viking Ocean ships were launched) and this was by far the best. From every aspect, from trip planning and booking through shore excursions, dining, cabin, embarkation and disembarkation, our trip was virtually flawless. My wife has celiac disease and is therefore strictly gluten and soy free. We made this aware to Viking early on and Viking ensured that no matter where we dined onboard, from the Restaurant, though the World Cafe, Manfredi's and the snack bars, she was accommodated. Our restaurant manager, Ariel Aribella, ensured that no matter which venue we dined in on a particular day, my wife as able to view the next days gluten free options and select her meals in advance. The ship itself was beautiful and spotless. I have read virtually every review of the Orion since its maiden voyage and was frankly surprised at some of the negative comments. Most negative comments, not all, seemed to reflect personal preferences of the reviewer, such as food quality, cabin layout, excursion locations and guides, etc. We experienced none of these issues, except for one minor problem on the Juneau included excursion, which we believe was incorrectly described. More on that later We selected our excursions the day they became available after creating our wish list on the My Viking Journey website and each of these was available. We chose three optional and four included excursions. The best ones were the optional excursions in Sitka, Icy Strait Point, and Skagway. Our only disappointment was as stated above, the included Salmon Hatchery and Mendenhall Glacier Experience. The salmon hatchery was fine, but our only view of the Mendenhall Glacier was from an observation point five miles away and the only way we knew it was the glacier and not a cloud was because our guide told us it was. Other people on this tour had the same comments and we made our issue known to Viking Guest Services. They acknowledged they had had similar complaints and we received a phone call the next day from Viking promising to address the issue. All of our other excursions were great, from the History and Native Animals of Sitka, to the Bear Search in Icy Strait Point, and especially the White Pass Railroad in Skagway. The outstanding weather during the last two added immensely to our enjoyment of these excursions. Cabin: From our virtual exploration of the Orion on the My Viking Journey website, we pretty much knew what to expect from our Penthouse Veranda Stateroom, and we were not disappointed . The cabin was spacious for our needs, the storage spaces were more than adequate, even for our way overpacked suitcases (lesson learned). The bathroom was well laid out and we never felt crowded. The balcony was large enough and had plenty of space. Our cabin attendant, Romantino and his assistant were outstanding. Every need was immediately attended to and the cabin was spotless each time we returned. The cruise director, Spence Robson was fantastic. Not only was he constantly available around the ship, he introduced all of the activities, including the port talks, the entertainers, and the production shows, he also is a great performer. We enjoyed the production shows by the Viking Oasis show band and the Viking Vocalists. They were very professional and enthusiastic. Read Less

We had always wanted to visit Alaska and when Viking announced in Dec of 2016 we booked. It was exciting counting down the days, all 888 of them. Viking and their staff were wonderful. Every one we came in contact greeted you warmly and were glad to be of service. The excursions department were able to accommodate our requests. The food was great, especially the Specialty restaurants. We ate at The World Cafe alot. The good was as good there as in The Restaurant. Viking really had the tenders organized. We never wanted more than 15 minutes to set to poer. This was one area we were really worried about; however, they had worked it out. We are booked on the Southern Crossing in March and before this cruise we were considering cancelling. After the experience on Viking Orion we are looking forward to the Viking Jupiter, our 3rd Viking ship. I cannot say enough good things about Viking and the overall wonderful experience aboard Viking Orion. I would highly recommend Viking and look forward to many trips with them. My wife and I enjoy Viking cruises. This one was no exception. The ship is geared to folks who are, i would say, in their mid-50's and older. Calm, not loud and noisy. No casinos. My wife had taken a similar cruise 50 years ago, just before we were married, and we decided that this would be a great way to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, and it was. Dining on board is really good - i did manage to hold weight gain to 5 pounds. Good basic food in all dining venues, and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner. We almost always take a shore extension at the beginning of the cruise - lets us get used to the time zone before the cruise starts. This extension was in Vancouver - just wish that it had been a day or two longer. The Hyatt Regency was very nice and centrally located. The city tour was fine. We do excursions in virtually every port, and there were many to choose from in addition to the free guided walking tour provided in each port. The White Pass (Yukon) Railroad trip out of Skagway was especially enjoyable. The salmon were late this year, meaning that there were fewer bears than otherwise. Seeing remnants of the 1964 earthquake and tsunami, including the petrified trees and the fact that the town of Valdez was literally recreated about 20 miles away, were fascinating. Saw some whales, seals, and sea otters, as well as bears (not as many), goats, and a zillion bald eagles. We are signed up for a couple more Viking cruises (river and ocean) and recommend them to anyone making inquiry. What I really like, after many years of business travel, is having everything planned ahead of time. From the time that you land at the airport and are met by a Viking representative at the airport until you board your flight home, you are on auto-pilot virtually the entire time. Read Less

Cabin was very comfortable, bathroom great. So many gathering places and quiet areas to hang out. Only went to one evening show but we highly recommend the Explorer Dome, sign up for all 3 shows as soon as you board. The ports were all interesting, mostly did the included but did book two private ones. They had interesting speakers who presented talks on the history and people we were visiting. The debarkation process was much appreciated. We were put on a bus in Seward and driven to Anchorage where we had access to a meeting room at a Hilton until it was time for them to take us to the airport. This was our second Viking Ocean cruise (our first was Viking Homelands in 2017--awesome!), this time on the Viking Orion. As with the Viking Sea, the ship is simply stunning. It is very elegant, tastefully appointed, and so well-designed that it never seems crowded. You feel like you are staying at an elegant, boutique hotel. On par with the ship itself, was the crew--without exception friendly, helpful, and unobtrusive--and the food, which was excellent. The Orion has a planetarium (the Explorer's Dome), which honestly was not particularly impressive and unfortunately took up space that on the other Viking ships is better occupied by the upper floor of the Explorer's Lounge. The only downside was that this was Viking's first season in Alaska, and in some respects it showed--we had to tender in several places rather than dock being the new guy, and a few of the included shore excursions need some fine tuning. (Valdez is not visited by many cruise ships for a reason--but with a new pier and terminal it has a lot of potential, and does have a fascinating history. Definitely recommend scheduling an optional excursion here). But these were very minor hiccups that in no way detracted from a great experience. Viking is our cruise line of choice from now on. We had family members that have done Viking river cruises and just couldn't say enough great things about them. So we decided to go along with them on this Alaska cruise. We have no complaints about the cruise or shore excursions at all! We will only use Viking Cruise Lines for all of our ocean or river cruises. Our chief steward was very professional and was a great professional at what she did, and how is maintained our cabin. My wife celebrated her birthday while on this cruise, we did not notify the cruise line of this. She was greatly surprised when we returned to our cabin on June 17th to find a cake and a bottle of sparking wine. What a great surprise. Thank you and your crew members for such a fantastic trip. Pre-cruise days in Vancouver not strictly worth it, because you see a lot of totem poles and nature you'll see in Alaska, but it's a beautiful city so there are no regrets. The vaunted Viking pre-boarding experience was a disaster, with no one to meet us at the airport or the embarcadero, leaving my wife and I to escort a confused and infirm elderly couple in the same predicament to the boarding area. Apologies were delivered, but I never got the impression anyone appreciated the magnitude of this failure and it remains a smudge on the experience. Onboard, everything was wonderful. I wondered how flexible the dining options would be on a "fancy" cruise compared to the 4-day Carnival cruises we sometimes take to Baja, but there was nothing to worry about there. Something was always available when needed, and everything from room service breakfast to late night snacks were well prepared, fresh, and plentiful. We did scheduled dining a couple of nights and buffet most others, and never had trouble finding space for up to six. Shore excursions were a mixed bag. Availability for booking the official excursions was incredibly poor, and I didn't feel like they were a better value or experience than simply booking yourself. The evening port talks were great, and it's very nice they're recorded. I feel like the excursion problem, along with the problem with embarkation, are growing pains from being a relatively new route and I think they'll improve quickly. As of now, excursions were the other low point of an otherwise wonderful cruise. Being on a beautifully decorated ship with many comfortable gathering areas, all generally older adults, and only one loudspeaker announcement per day was a great way to spend 10 days. Afternoon tea quickly became a must, and evenings in the observation lounge or spotting sealife from the railings were perfect. The cabin was also very comfortable and well sized, and the crew was outstanding without exception. Read Less

We chose this cruise to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with my wife's sister and her husband. We had a double wedding ceremony so wanted to do something together that would be very special, a once in a life time experience. Viking Ocean cruises fulfilled that experience. Every stateroom had a balcony with an unobstructed view. A great place to have a glass of wine together and enjoy the wonderful views. Meals were just as wonderful. You were presented with an unlimited number of choices and each was delicious as the next. The specially restaurants were even better and did not cost any extra. Beer or wine were free at lunch and dinner. The lounge areas were beautiful as was the live music every evening. The staff were great and greeted you with a smile and by name. We took advantage of included and optional excursions that gave us the trip of a life time. We saw eagles, puffins, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, seals, seal rookery, brown and black bears, glaciers, a calving glacier and absolutely beautiful scenery. If you want the best experience, choose Viking and enjoy every minute! Read Less
