From the moment you arrive on the Viking Orion you were treated like royalty. The embarkation process was quick and painless. As soon as you step onboard you are handed a glass of champagne by the friendly staff and directed to the dining room for lunch, The bags were portered up to the room by the time we finished lunch. Although there is no casino there are endless choices of things to do on the ship. We started with a relaxing dip in the heated spa pool which is more like a giant jacuzzi with all the bubbles you could want. In addition there is a main pool and an infinity pool inthe back of the ship. The ports of call were all very good, The included and optional tours were all very interesting. The food choices were numerous and good. The staff was very polite and the service was exceptional. Read Less

We chose Viking Ocean Cruises based on our experience with Viking River Cruises in 2015 and our desire to visit the western Mediterranean. We ended up sailing the Orion on its maiden voyage. The ship is absolutely wonderful. Viking has translated their river ship feel into small cruise ships. We really enjoyed the restaurants, public areas of the ship, stateroom, crew, cruise directors team, entertainment, cultural experiences, ease of travel, and the optional excursions. Our only less than excellent experience was in the included excursions. This may be us comparing the included river cruise shore excursions with the ocean ones. The port cities on the Rhine may be more amenable for the included shore excursion experience than the ocean port cities. Also, we found that our optional shore excursions covered most of the same ground as the included shore excursions. We are sailing with Viking Ocean Cruises again in April 2019. We will explore the Baltic and Russia on that trip. Read Less

We had a fabulous time on our Mediterranean Odyssey with Viking. It was our first trip to Croatia which we had heard was beautiful. It was beyond beautiful...just breathtaking. We spent our 44th anniversary in Monte Carlo and had dinner in the Italian restaurant. It was a wonderful experience. We had taken two river cruises with Viking and this was the first ocean cruise with Viking. The level of service was was just as good although there were more people to take care of. The included excursions were first class and we were so pleased with the tours in each location. The tour guides were enthusiastic and professional and well informed. The food was incredible and the specialty restaurants were wonderful. You could have anything you like in the World Cafe we loved our meal there. We hope to take more cruises with Viking because of the wonderful sevice we have experienced and Viking has set the bar high enough that I am sure that we would be hard to please with any other cruiseline. We chose Viking because we have always wanted to see Europe and this seemed to be an economical and exciting way to see several different countries. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend Viking and the Mediterranean cruise itinerary which included Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Greece, and Croatia . We were on the maiden cruise of the Orion and the ship was beautiful, the food was delicious and plentiful, and the crew was awesome. Our cabin was very comfortable as was our bed. We had plenty of room. The cruise was aimed more at an older clientele and I wouldn't recommend it for young couples. The entertainment onboard ship was tailored mainly to the cultural aspect of our cruise and added to the enjoyment of the ports we visited. Viking included one excursion at each port that we visited in the price and we really enjoyed these trips which usually included a tour of the city we were visiting. I do wish they also included beach excursions as part of the experience. We saw many beautiful beaches and I really wished we had had the chance to visit and enjoy them. I also would have liked our tour guides to hand out emergency numbers in the event you became separated or needed help of some kind. We really loved the cruise and plan on taking a river cruise with Viking next year in the summer. Read Less

Having experienced a Viking river cruise 2 years ago, we thought we would try an ocean cruise. We arrived at the departure city 10 days in advance to explore and enjoy - then went to the ship. Vueling Airlines (normally I would not name an airline - but this organization deserves to be mentioned) lost one of our bags and the folks at Viking went the extra distance (literally - from Monte Carlo to Nice) to recover the bag even though they were NOT part of the problem. Customer service was perseverant and excellent! Following the official christening a week prior, we were the first passengers to experience this brand new ship - and what a treat it was! These folks know what it costs to offer a 5 star trip and do not nickel and dime you along the way. Viking does not do anything on the 'cheap'. They truly make it a 5 star experience. Just prior to arrival, we were informed by e-mail that we had a complimentary upgrade to a Penthouse Veranda Stateroom (possibly because we had sailed with Viking in the past). Cabins are very comfortable and spacious with lots of storage within. Little things like a heated bathroom floor are abundant and well thought out. The cabin attendants are quick, thorough and very well trained. The ship graciously provides you with a list of the room's contents...and relative value should you decide to tuck something in your suitcase upon departure. You are free to bring whatever alcoholic beverages with you - unlike the other lines that depend on the 'booze packages' to top up their tills! Every palate is taken into account - from gourmet to buffet - the menus are fresh, innovative, varied and absolutely delicious. Evening menus featuring local cuisine, appropriate wines and attentive table service is spot on! For some reason, my wife and I expected an upper end IKEA atmosphere - instead, we got Neiman Marcus (on steroids). Each of Vikings ocean ships have their own unique venue within. In this case, it is an astrological domed theatre featuring well produced movies on space and the arctic experience. An intimate gathering with comfortable seating and about 6 projectors to generate a state of the art presentation. It is kept fairly cold so may want to bring a jacket - or the cashmere blanket from your stateroom! Every member of the staff from the Captain to the maintenance man looks you straight in the eye and says hello - and asks (sincerely) how your day is going. If a member of the staff is not working up to expectation - they seem to disappear for a day - then surface a day later with a broad smile, attitude adjustment and increased efficiency. They do not treat the passengers with an underlying distain that many cruise line staff seem to purvey. When asked "What's it like to work for Viking?" without fail, they are very complimentary about the personnel management policies, hours of work, perks and staff accommodation. The majority of the guides hired for the on-shore excursions are, educated, entertaining, enthusiastic, and experienced. Accents can be a bit of a challenge from time to time but Viking expects a report card at then end of the tour ensuring that the guide performed up to Viking expectations. Unfortunately the shipboard WiFi can be a little flakey if you are using your own laptop of cell phone. There is a bank of 6 hardwired computers on the main deck along with a printer should you happen to need one. In summation, we expected great - and got an 'over the top' experience. Viking deserves the accolades it receives from the various travel organizations. Would we spend this much again for a cruise? If it is with Viking, the answer is yes! Read Less

My husband and I wanted to visit the Mediterranean area and felt this cruise itinerary was a perfect way to get a taste of many countries. We enjoyed all of the ports and felt prepared for each day due to the great info provided in the shore talks. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. The ship was beautiful and there were a wealth of activities for us. We enjoyed all of the musical options available every day. The food in the restaurants was diverse and delicious. We tried all of the restaurants. One of my favorite places was the restaurant we would go to for breakfast, can’t remember name, but you could eat your breakfast outside on the deck and enjoy the beautiful views and warm weather. I tell my husband all the time “I’d go back on that ship tomorrow!” We met many interesting fellow passengers onboard. In fact, we have continued to meet up with travelers from our area. Overall, this was an amazing trip and I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks to all the Viking Orion staff for making this awesome trip possible. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed being on a Viking riverboat and wanted to try a larger, ocean going Viking ship. It was amazing. Not only was it absolutely beautiful but it seemed music was everywhere. The central area seemed to have musicians playing whenever we passed by, but there were great musical shows in the theatre as well. On board was an intimate planetarium with two movies literally surrounding the guests. We enjoyed all three pools, the infinity, the large indoor and the quiet spa pool, and found swimming was a great way to counter the absolutely wonderful food on Board. Every single dish we selected was delicious. We tried the Italian restaurant twice, and next time I will reserve it for even more nights. However, the brightly decorated Norwegian restaurant was the most fun, with limitless lax and other great entrees and desserts. As with the river cruise, we could go on free tours at every stop. We found them well-organized with excellent guides. Even at those ports we had been to in the past, the tours were so educational. We never felt rushed or crowded and were taken to unusual spots, like the most elegant wine-tasting in a noble’s manse. Our room was the nicest one we have ever had on a ship. It was a balcony room with more drawers that we could possibly fill up. But that was good to know, as we can’t wait to go on a longer trip and have made plans to go on the Viking’s Buenos Aires to Santiago cruise in Feb. 2020. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it covered both the Western Med and the Adriatic Sea, going from Barcelona, Spain to Venice, Italy. Usually, you have to choose one or the other itineraries. We had cruised four times with Viking River Cruises so we knew what to expect from Viking. Viking did not let us down!!! The cabins were large with a veranda. Crew was fabulous - definitely up to Viking standards! Dining was extraordinary. Prepared well and the service was fantastic. Of course the included wine with every meal helped the meals go down smoothly! Enertainment was thoroughly enjoyable! Ranged form opera to a flautist to curent musical productions. Fitness room and sauna was exceptional. The 'snow room' in heir sauna aera was unique. It complemented the whirlpool and dry and wet saunas. Excursions at eah port of call were great. Embarkation and debarkation were handled as only Viking can do! Truly exceptional We only vacation with Viking now! Read Less

We initially chose the cruise because of the itinerary was to places we wanted to visit. We didn't realize until onboard this was the maiden voyage. There were a few hiccups and some things that needed tending to -- as in "we are waiting for the shower door seals to catch up to us." Our cabin was very spacious and there was plenty of room to store all of our clothes and such. The bathroom as well had lots of space and the shower was very roomy. The balcony was spacious and allowed us to sit comfortably at the table and not feel cramped. The only downside was the coffee maker. It was a Nespresso but did not come with the pods. Instead there was instant coffee and tea. That was not the probleml. The problem was there were no clear instructions on how to operate when you don't stick a pod in. I thought I was following the instructions, but sometimes I got hot water and other times not. I am hoping this has been corrected. Dining was terrific. I think we just managed to hit all of the options. It was nice to be waited on and then have the option for burgers, deli or the buffet. Dining al fresco was also nice. Afternoon tea, when onboard, was delightful. There were plenty of activities to keep us busy onboard. Entertainment was great and the places to listen to music were many. The total surprise was the planeterium on board. We went every opportunity we could. The onboard astronomers were very knowledgeable and they were more than willing to share their expertise. They even scheduled extra nights so they could point out new stars/planets in the sky. The "educational" speakers, too, knew their subjects and made what could be a dry subject very entertaining. We tried not to miss them. All of the personnel were friendly and anxious to help you out. Our cabin steward was amazing. Any request, no matter how small, and he was delighted to fulfill them. My daughter used the fitness center and we partook of the spa and other areas. My only complaint was the sauna/hot tub area closed too early. We would have used it more, but time constraints with other activities forced us to choose them over relaxing in the spa. There were lots of excursions, almost too many, I wanted to go on several of them. It was hard to choose. I traveled with my parents and my daughter and all of us agreed it was a great experience. We will definitely be on another Viking cruise in the near future. Read Less

Researched, seemed like it offered more, although pricey. Totally worth every penny! The staff was very professional, well-informed. We have to give great compliments to our main restaurant servers/attendants, Shendy, Hengky, Casper, Gorky, Zharko, Khadafi. I'm sorry, can't recall all, but these definitely stood out in service. The room service was also exceptional. Laundry room good, but needed staff to walk us through process as the signs were difficult to understand. The excursions were outstanding! The tours, guides were the best. We did get lost when my mother had to use the bathroom in Dubrovnik Walking Tour. Would have been nice if the guide waited as it was, I recall, a 4 hour tour, no bathroom break, just pointed to ladies room with long line ahead. Reason why we lost her. Also, cancellation of paid, not included tour policy is not acceptable for those that are unable to do, after previous day's tour. A lot of walking for my 87 year old mother that was too tired the following day to do the paid tour. Had to wait for refund, only if someone on waiting list. Luckily, one person was interested, therefore, we were refunded for the pricey tour excursion.Something that needs correction. All in all, we are going on another cruise in 2019, and 2020. Wouldn't do any other overseas cruise unless it's Viking! Read Less

Wanted to be on a great ship without massive amount of passengers. We had been reading about this cruise line and finally booked and never regretted it. Beautifully designed ship. welcoming crew members. Excellent food-well prepared and tasty at all levels, from the Buffet (which you really didn't seem like you were eating from a Buffet line) to the 3 restaurants which catered to each individual. Most Excursions were well planned and and very informative. Ship was designed with the passengers in mind, not just to build a ship, but built for the passenger to have an experience!!! Cabins were beautiful. every Port and shore excursions were planed out for each passenger who were going to disembark/embark were provided with information the night before, what time, which location and utilizing the room/boarding key made such a smooth transition ON & OFF the ship. The 4 day land tour arranged by Viking Cruise line was planned with the upmost care and details for the passengers to have the optimal fun. Read Less

It had the itinerary I was looking for. My wife always wanted to visit Rome and this cruise allowed for that. The size of the ship and the number of passengers was a big plus. I have been on other cruises that had several thousand people on board and that was too crowded. The fact that the age was restricted to keep small children away. Not having to fight for a spot in the pools or hot tubs was great. With the smaller number of passengers the service felt more personal. The crew was always ther waiting to help and not having to rush because they were keep so busy. The option of selecting where to eat and who to sit with made the dining experience more enjoyable. Not being told what table to sit at was great. Although a bit on the small size the cabin was comfortable and the veranda was a nice experience which I hadn't had before. Read Less

Viking's reputation and satisfied friends and family members led us to this outstanding first Viking Cruise. We have cruised many times before on other cruise lines. Should you want first class service, a relaxed atmosphere, pleasant surroundings, happy crew members, excellent entertainment and culinary delights this is the cruise line for you. This was our first time in Italy. I can't imagine being exposed to the ancient culture, history, and timeless beauty of this country in any better fashion. We finished our cruise with a Rome extension. The hotel was up to Viking standards with Viking's own concierge there to answer any questions. We took advantage of five dining opportunities: 1. The main dining room (excellent) 2. The buffet dining room (similar fare to the main dining room but easy and quick) 3. The poolside burger bar (very good for lunch after a shore excursion) 4. The Italian specialty restaurant Manfredi's (Mmmm good ribeye) 5. The Chef's table ( unique cuisine) Bravo Viking! We'll be back! Read Less

We enjoyed the World Cafe, high tea, evening entertainment. Our mistake was not taking some of the longer tours, which would have been more interesting. Not Viking's fault, but ours.. Lesson learned. We met several couples on the ship and with them each evening we would go the to top level Explorers' Lounge to watch the ship leave port. The crew, housekeeping, dining, etc., was excellent. Couldn't ask for more. We really enjoyed the World Cafe and Manfredi's. Great desserts ( My highlight) We have told many friends about Viking and the service. Friends just went to see the Northern Lights on Viking. Not sure what cruise or ship. Other frends went river cruising, which we did several years ago from Lyon. We chose Viking because of all the cruise lines we have been on, it was the best in every way. They took care of every detail -- from the time we boarded our plane from home to the time we got back home. The personnel were outstanding - personal, attentive, friendly, and service oriented. Our room was always clean and attended to, the food servers wonderful and we most especially like our wine steward. The people we met while we dined and were on our excursions with were so nice -- it added to the fun of the trip. We like that there are no small children aboard as the focus is adult food and ambiance. The fitness and recreation also geared toward adults - excellent. The excursions we chose were wonderful. I especially loved the excursion to the winery in the Calabria region as it took me back to my roots - Pompeii a little bit of history. No matter where we were the tour guides were attentive and informative. We extended our tour in Tuscany. That part of the tour far exceeded my expectations. We had a guide, Daniel, who tended to those of us who stayed at the villa from the time we disembarked the ship until we boarded our plane home. In between the excursions, the ambiance, the people at the villa -- I cannot say enough good things about the whole experience. We will always choose Viking Cruises over any other cruise line. We would like a few more leasurely easy excursions for some of us that can't walk or stand for 2 hrs or so. The food was so good in the restaurant we did not even go to one of the two specialty restaurants. We really enjoyed the explorers lounge with the live entertainment. Each day after our excursion we cleaned up and relaxed there before dinner. The next time we go we will be sure to use the sauna and cold room as well as the pools. A quick intro. This was our first time on Viking Ocean, my previous cruise experience was western Med on Regent Mariner. Traveled with my mom, who has a lot of cruise experience on a variety of lines. Mom picked the cruise, I was the lucky travel companion. Cruise departed from Rome and traveled to Barcelona. This itinerary has the ship traveling in the evening/at night. We were lucky to be on the 2nd cruise on Orion, which is new and beautiful. Embarkation - we arrived the day before and stayed at the Hilton at the airport. Our TA arranged for us to meet the Viking transport at the airport for our transfer to the ship. We were a bit nervous about this, since most people were coming directly from a flight and we were afraid we might miss the group. Turned out we should not have worried, when we arrived at the airport we immediately found a crowd of travelers wearing the red Viking stickers and made our way to the buses. There was no crowd in the terminal, we were able to process within a few minutes after waiting in a very short line, and then quickly went aboard. The staff greats you with a glass of champagne as you board, with some staff wearing traditional nordic clothing. The customer service desk is open 24/7, and it is good idea to talk to them when you board, the lines get longer later in the day. With cabin access at 1pm, we had some time to explore the ship. Orion is a beautiful ship. The public spaces are wide open, she never feels crowded. We went directly to the spa to book some services. The spa is unique and the staff is quite helpful. Mom signed up for a facial and I signed up for a guided experience using the nordic spa. This is an event open to 10 people once per cruise (they did it twice this journey, lots of interest) for a low fee which includes a body brush and various creams and lotions. The gym is next door - clean and really well appointed. When I came down to exercise in the morning each piece of cardio equipment was preloaded with a fresh towel and bottle of water. There were plenty of sanitary wipes and a hand washing station, too. I had everything I needed for a great workout. After the spa we went upstairs to what I call the "food court". This area, with both indoor and outdoor seating, serves food from various stations. The fresh made gelato every day was a favorite. I love that Viking had no extra sugar added gelato every day (with a new flavor every day!) and no added sugar cookies too. Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner, and so is soda. The wait staff was quick to bring water and wine, it took a while to get a soda sometimes, and I found it worked better to order two glasses each time. I often ran into other diners who were ordering two sodas at a time - the glass holds half a can. We had a penthouse veranda cabin. One thing we really liked - our stewed came in and introduced herself and then went over all of the features of the cabin with us. The min fridge was preloaded with an assortment of soda, beer, champagne, mini liquor bottles and 3 tiny toblerone candy bars. We knew what we wanted in the fridge - lots of Diet Coke and wine instead of champagne, so we left a note for the crew member who does the mini fridge refills. There is no place in the fridge for the ice bucket - you can ask for ice each day but half of it does melt while you are out and about. The room featured way more pillows than we knew what to do with, pillows on the beds, pillows on the couch, pillows on the chairs. We had the two bed configuration, the room included a couch and chair as well as two tables. The veranda had two chairs and a table as well. Loved that there was a big window and a regular door to the veranda rather than a slider! The TV is large, with several news channels to choose from as well as BBC documentaries and TED talks as well as some movies. There are two speciality restaurants on the ship as well as the main dining room and the food court. We tried Manfredis and it was OK. The menus at the Chefs Table were not for us. We found that the main dining room, which was never crowded, was our favorite. The service was excellent, and they can even bring you food from one of the other restaurants if you ask. Tea time is simple - the guitar player plays and sings, and everyone group receives a tray with some tiny sandwiches and 4 treats. The tea is simple. This is one area which was disappointing to me after the sumptuous tea's on Regent and the lively trivia games at tea time. One our ship the tea was never crowded, there was plenty of room for more people. The entertainment on the ship is very low key. No big broadway style nightly shows on this trip. There is a cast of 4 young singers who did two shows, the cruise director had one show where he sang with the band. They brought in some local entertainers - an opera group in Livorno which was very entertaining and included audience participation - a string group another night, and a wonderful local music group in Barcelona. You can find live music throughout the trip at tea, during the Munch Moments, in the public areas and in the night club. There was a live music dance night on the pool deck as well. Orion has a planetarium style show which was very interesting and there was a stargazing lecture one night with the resident astronomer. We did a combination of the included shore excursions and some which were for an additional fee. By far our favorite was a trip to Cassis when we were in Marseille. This little French town felt like it was Belle's hometown with it's perfect little store fronts and cafes. There was a beach and the excursion included a lovely boat ride on the crystal clear waters to see the various fjords (they called them something else, but they were fjords). It was market day and there were vendors with fresh fruit and veg, handmade soaps and other crafts and various merchandise. Our other paid shore excursion was Florence by Tuk Tuk. Since the drive from port is so long you don't get nearly enough time to fully explore Florence, but Tomas the Tuk Tuk driver made sure we saw all the main sights and took us to a church above the city with amazing views of Florence. The meet up point for the Florence excursions is a square with both an excellent leather store and jewelry store. The buses for all the trips had great air conditioning, which was cold to American expectations. Points to Viking for this! We visited Pisa on the included excursion, which included a lot of walking from the bus to the square. The tour included too much "time on our own" as there was only one restaurant there and no real shops - and a lot of very aggressive vendors. We took the included walking tour in Monaco, and since the ship was there all day and evening we were able to head back in town to visit the casino. In St Tropez the included tour takes you to a planned community with canals like Venice. The community was built in the 70s. Luckily it was market day there and we were able to shop at the local market for food and gifts. We could have used more time to shop at this local market. Then the tour bus took us to St Tropez for a walking tour of the town. The best part of this port day was sitting in the infinity pool or on deck watching the amazing yachts go by - you can google them by name to see who they belong to. The included tour of Barcelona takes you around the city in the bus - you can see some of the Gaudi buildings from the bus. You tour the cathedral, and then many people departed from the group to spend their day in the city. There is a bus from the city to the port, so you can enjoy your day in town. That spa is an amazing place. Access to the spa is included in your cruise fare. During my spa experience, the staff lead us through the nordic experience - we started with dry brushing our skin, then into the sauna, then into the snow room - we did that a few times - rubbing snow balls on our skin. When you are done with that there is an ice bucket dumpshower, and also a fabulous shower with many different sprays. The pool in the spa is a hydrotherapy pool, and there is a hot tub as well. There are also heated loungers. If you travel viking ocean do not miss the spa! The pool has two pools on deck - there is an infinity pool and a regular pool. The infinity pool is deeper and colder. It is amazing to sit in the infinity pool and watch the yachts go past. The crew on this ship is very eager to please, and we received several surveys during the cruise - and the staff actually followed up on them, calling me to ask questions about my responses. After his show the cruise director asked everyone to make sure they filled out the surveys, he stressed that they would be responsive, and you could see some things changed immediately in response - for example, the dining room switched from room temp water to ice water after the surveys. We were always greeted with a smile, and if it was within their power the staff granted your wish. The customer service desk is open 24/7 and they patiently answered all of our questions. You can find a map of each port in the book case in front of the customer service desks, and also on the dock in the area under the red canopy. The Viking passengers seemed to be a friendly crowd, and there was a wide age range of passengers, but not too many teen aged kids. Read Less

My wife and I just returned from a eight day Viking Western Mediterranean cruise. The ship is brand new (June 2018). It was beautiful and had lots of modern amenities. In addition, the Viking staff were wonderful. We loved our cabin attendant, the wait staff, kitchen staff, tour guides, entertainment, etc. The Food and dining choices were excellent. Also the Spa and Workout area are top notch. As to ports, we visited Pisa (one of our favorites), Florence, Monaco, St. Topaz, Marseille, and Barcelona. The ports were a bit 'stick' from heat, but I blame that on July and not Viking. As the ship was brand new, there were a few 'glitches'. Our in room coffee maker and built in USB recharge ports were non-functional. Also, the ship had frequent elevator issues were one or more of the six elevators were always down. Also, our mid ship cabin had an extremely weak WiFi signal. We had to go to a common area in order to access the ship's WiFi. Tips: 1) BOOK YOUR EXCURSION EARLY! We were used to Vikings River Cruises were you would book your excursion once you got on the ship. Not so with the Ocean Cruises. Book early or you are unlikely to get the excursion you want. 2) Book dinner at one of the specialty restaurants as soon as you board the ship! We were slow on the draw here and could not get a formal reservation at either of the two specialty restaurants, however you can always just show up and depending on demand, they may be able to seat you. 3) Download the Viking App before you arrive. It will help you quickly book your tours and dinner reservations, as well as act as daily guide to activities. Bonus Tip! The ship has free on board laundry facilities (including detergent). Four washer/dryers per deck. You don't have to overpack knowing you can do a laundry run mid week! Read Less

Our cruise was on the Mediterranean, from Rome to Barcelona. We did the Rome extension before our cruise began--the accommodations in Rome were excellent. The hotel staff bent over backwards to get all of us into our rooms early, when we arrived at noon from the airport. So much to see in Rome--I wish we had gone even earlier than the 2 days allotted! The Viking crew took excellent care of us from the time we got off the plane in Rome until we were checked in for our flight in Barcelona. The ship was beautiful; our cabin was pristine, and the service staff was excellent in every part of the ship. The food was excellent and since it was included in the price of the cruise, we were free to try entrees that we normally would not have. Our shore excursions were informative and also included in the price of the cruise, with other options available for a modest price. I was delighted to find free self-laundry facilities available. Overall, everything was top-notch and we felt pampered. We did not travel with children; I don't think this cruise would have appealed to our young teenagers at all. The entertainment and facilities on-board the ship were geared more towards adults, and they probably would have found the excursions to be boring. My only "complaint" is that we were very rushed between connecting flights upon re-entry into the US. I caught the tight connection on our out-going flights and was able to request a longer lay-over. Our lay-over on the return trip seemed adequate, but since we are not frequent international travelers, I had forgotten about the extended time required to clear immigration and customs. If our connecting flight had not been delayed, we would not have made it. We RAN through O'Hare and right up the jet-way onto the plane, and they immediately closed the door. If Viking books your flights (which I would recommend, given the price savings), make sure there are more than a few hours between connections on the return. Read Less

My family have been on Viking River and Ocean cruises and just raved about them. It took very little encouragement to convince me to try a Viking cruise. I have been to the Caribbean, Alaska, Bermuda with other cruse lines over the years. Viking was truly the most outstanding one yet. There are so many wonderful places to choose, in addition to terrific Pricing and amenities that other cruises don’t even consider. For my girlfriend, it was her first Ever cruise, she started with The Best. We are currently looking into our second cruise, Trying to decide between another Ocean or a River Cruise. The entire crew, from top to bottom of ship’s order, was always happy, helpful and went the ‘extra’ mile, when needed. The ports terrific, as well as the people we met. There was only one guide and one add-on tour, we took on our own, that we felt was not ‘up to snuff’, but we did register our concern, which I am sure was taken care of. I joined a small group so didn’t choose the cruise or ship but enjoyed the Viking process. There was no line when we boarded and we went to our room after exploring the ship. I like to start a cruise by looking for a quiet apot were I can retreat. We had reservations at Manfredi’s and enjoyed our first Viking meal. The breakfast crowd was overwhelming the first morning but better when I found places to retreat with my first meal of the day. The room was cozy, but well designed. I was disappointed the the included coffee pot didn’t work and asked them to remove it. Beds were confortable and storage space good. Robes, slippers, hair drier and bath amenities were included. The spa area was nice and I enjoyed the Viking sauna, steam and cold water plunge. I went on the last night and they were defrosting the snow room so I didn’t get that experience. The gym looked good but I was more interested in the food, pool, dining and shore excursions, both private and Viking. Aside from the planetarium talks, which were well done, I didn’t participate in enrichment activities. I enjoyed classical music on floors 1 and 7, along with the, mostly, quiet and comfortable lounge spaces. There were books everywhere and enjoyed browsing the collections. This is no party ship and I enjoyed it. Read Less

My wife and I very much enjoyed our 7 night western Mediterranean cruise! The ship was beautiful from stem to stern with great common areas and nice restaurants. The rooms were plenty spacious with good storage capabilities and a nice spacious (by cruise ship standards) bathroom. The ship's overall size was perfect. Not too big, not too small! The docking point in Monte Carlo was fantastic! It was one of the highlights. What a view to wake up to and look out on while eating breakfast! We took both the pre-excursion to Tuscany and the post excursion to Madrid! Both were very nice. For the pre-excursion in Tuscany we stayed at Villa I Barronci. It was nice, but I will say it was a bit below Viking standards. As I understand it, Viking had to make a last minute change to the Villa we were originally scheduled to stay at. But it was still nice. The breakfast was very good with lots of options. One surprise was how far from Rome the Port of Civitavecchia was. The boat was docked at the Port of Civitavecchia and getting to Rome for a quick one day excursion was harder than expected. So if you're planning to run to Rome for a day, be prepared for an hour and a half Uber ride each way. But we got to see the Coliseum and surrounding ruins and still make it back for all aboard. Otherwise, the rest of the excursions were very good and we enjoyed each one. Siena was one of my favorite old historical towns. Service throughout the ship was phenomenal the whole time, which is what you would expect from Viking. The post excursion to Madrid was fun, starting with a speedy train ride from Barcelona. And by speedy, I mean 186 MPH! We enjoyed Madrid much more than Barcelona and we had a good time in Spain. St Tropez was very nice as well and one of our favorite ports of call. But not sure they're going to continue stopping there on future western Mediterranean cruises, so we're happy we got to go into town. While we won't be taking this exact cruise again, we'll definitely be taking another Viking Ocean Cruise! Read Less

We chose Viking after watching way too many episodes of Downton Abbey and being brainwashed by all the commercials, and we chose the Iconic Western Mediterranean itinerary since it had so many places we had always dreamed about seeing. This was our first trip to Europe and first cruise ever, and we were not disappointed. The service on the ship is first class. It's like a Ritz Carlton on water. The excursions arranged by Viking were wonderful and informative (though my husband said he could do with a few less museums!) and we enjoyed every port of call, even the one where we just got off the ship and wandered around. The food was absolutely amazing. We mostly ate in the World Cafe although we did try all of the specialty restaurants. It was just so easy to pop in and grab a table and enjoy all the food. We never had to wait for a table. Ever. I was also impressed that the paella they were cooking on the deck was better than what we had on our outing in Barcelona! Ever since we've been home, we keep saying "I wish we were still on our ship!" We have already booked cruise #2 for next year! Read Less
