We choose this cruise, due to the many interesting ports, we'd not visited. Viking Oceans is trying to do, too much, too fast, and losing sight of the small details, involved in "Luxury Cruising". We'd sailed on Viking River Cruises numerous times and on Viking Star, loving everyday. Not so with this cruise, Bay of Bangle, involved a different 'hurdle' daily. Embarkation in Mumbai was a total NIGHTMARE! No-one at the 'Guest Service' desk knew the definition of 'guest services'. We arrived late into ports, and therefore had the planned excursions rush. There wasn't any entertainment, as had been present of other Viking cruises. The food was, good. The service was delayed by staffing problems and a general lack of experience. We were given two days in Gao, India and one day in Singapore. Go figure! We had a three hour bus excursion in Georgetown. We drove around the same circle five times, without any potty breaks. There was a fort and a Palace, we couldn't get out and explore. Saving on port fees, we were two hours out of the city of Bangkok. This meant five hours on a bus, day one and 2 1/2 hours back the next day to the airport. Not a happy finish! We're going to give Viking Ocean more time to pull their act together, before any additional travel, on them. The ship is beautiful. Read Less

The cruise was fantastic. The room was comfortable, the crew was amazing, the food was great, the excursions were absolutely phenomenal. We had only been on a river cruise and were concerned that the bigger ship may mean long lines and waiting. We needn't have worried. No lines and no waiting. It's difficult to choose a favorite stop: the many hued houses of Burano; the glass making in Murano; Krka national Park with the beautiful water falls (Do take this excursion. It's a pleasant foil to the old towns.); the old walled towns in Split, Dubrovnik (wow) and Kotor (what a view up the mountain!); and classic ancient Olympia and Athens! Make sure to add on the two days in Athens. I don't know what could have been better. The gentleman who took care of our room and the young lady whose area we sat in for meals were absolutely professional and wonderful. The excursions were well organized and all were very interesting. All the Viking employees are pleasant with a nice greeting every time you passed one in the hall. The entertainment in the central lounge was exceptional. Loved it while enjoying a drink after dinner. Didn't matter whether it was classical, piano, or jazz. Don't miss the hot tub after all the walking during the shore excursions. Wonderfully relaxing. It was our 25th Anniversary and we wanted something special. We had heard great reviews about Viking Cruises and they lived up to all of it. We stayed 4 days in Venice to visit relatives prior to the cruise. Embarkation and Disembarkation were VERY smooth. We did not wait like we have in the past on other cruise lines. Ports and shore excursions were very good! We really enjoyed the fact we had extra time to do shopping or sightseeing on our own in most of the ports. Our cabin was perfect! We loved the space and king size bed! The Orion was new in 2018 and you could tell! Clean and comfortable! It was very cozy to lie on the deck or in the Explorer's Lounges with cozy blankets and amazing views. The staff really paid personal attention to us! Entertainment was good- band and Pablo but ended early. The Viking Spa and Bathing experience was also amazing! However we really did not discover it until last couple days. The welcome aboard with champagne and cool cloths was very refreshing especially since the temperatures were in the 90's! Read Less

We have taken Viking River cruises before and enjoyed them very much. We were anxious to take the ocean cruise on the new ORION. The embarkation and disembarkation were very smooth and easy. We appreciated the number of Viking staff that was available. The dining was very good and we enjoyed and appreciated the great service. We especially liked the World Cafe with the great choices of food. We were very impressed with everything about our room and the ship. The small areas like the library and the Explorers Lounge were great places to spend time. Also, we always enjoyed the views from the top decks. The shore excursions were interesting and the Quiet Vox (headphones) were great. The entertainment on board was good. I especially like the Broadway Hits sung by the Viking singers. We also like the Folkloric Group from Corfu. "Karyatides". With our Norwegian heritage, we felt at home with the decor of the ship. Read Less

This was our second Viking cruise. Our first was a river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. We had such an amazing time we decided to try an ocean cruise on Viking. The ship was beautiful and had everything we wanted. Excellent foods, great staff, great shore excursions. Our room was clean and comfortable. Enjoyed the pools, entertainment, spa. The countries we visited were amazing. Scenery was breathtaking!!! Visiting Venice, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece was wonderful. Seeing where the very first Olympics were held, climbing up to the Acropolis and visiting the museum there was so enjoyable. It was very hot and humid though!! I would recommend going when it’s cooler. And be sure to read about the shore excursions, Viking explains the degree of difficulty, because some people had a hard time with some that we were on.Viking makes you enjoy and relax with everything they do!!! Thanks to all the great staff on board!! You’re the best!!!! We will definitely plan another cruise in the future with Viking. Read Less

Our trip started with the 3 day Viking pre-excursion tour of Tuscany, Florence, and Siena. The 800 year old villa where we stayed was extraordinary! The food and tours were fantastic and embarkation was seamless. The Orion is a beautiful ship with so much to offer. We attended 2 different planetarium shows, live music shows in in the theater, a movie under the stars, and enjoyed tea time on several occasions. Staff kept our room emaculately clean and well supplied. We really enjoyed the balcony. The food was outstanding with excellent variety and good service. Loved the espresso/latte machines. The excursions were the highlight of the trip. We were glad we booked our choices early. The ports and historic sites were once-in-a-lifetime destinations. The tour guides were knowledgeable, the transportation (both by land and sea) was safe and comfortable. Disembarkation was well-organized and easy. We plan to schedule another Viking cruise soon. The process to get a reservation could be improved. Despite this, all dining experiences were top notch. food quality very high. Silver Spirits package was definitely worth the extra money. The excursions were well planned and getting everyone out and organized every day was expedient and efficient. I really enjoyed the adult atmosphere and the classical music each day in the Atrium. Did not miss the lack of casino or late night shows. Would have liked having access to deck games in the evening. The ports of call were all interesting, in particular Dubrovnic and Corfu. Workout room was well appointed. I have always resisted going on a cruise due to the crowds, children, and noise. Viking has showed me there is another side to cruising! Read Less

This was our first cruise ever, so we chose Viking because of our great experience on the Viking river cruise. The ambiance of the ship was classic and elegant; our room was luxurious; and the staff was so attentive that we felt like royalty! Every day we had excellent food in wonderful surroundings. There were plenty of private nooks and crannies so that we never felt that there were many others on board. The 24/7 room service was a really big hit with our group. No matter what time we returned to the ship, we knew we could always have a fabulous meal. Even the buffet had many "made to order" items that made us feel special. The excursions were excellently organized and we always felt that we knew where we were to go and how to get back. This was our first extended family vacation that included married spouses, but will definitely not be our last. We are already planning our next Viking cruise. Read Less

We especially liked the 4X4 driving in Montenegro, the Fortification Walk, the National Forest/Falcon Place, Olympia and the Murano Glass. We were with another couple and liked that there were tables for four. We liked the Italian dining room and the Chef's Table was good, but we would have preferred a few more choices (although we realize one menu is the point). The pools were lovely and the sitting area connected to them was awesome. Embarking was good and simple. Disembarking was disorganized and long. We did not care for the excursion where the boats going into the little caves. Not really much of an experience. Overall a great experience that we would recommend to others. Only thing I would do differently is choose a time that was less hot. Read Less

Wanted to try a more inclusive cruise line with a smaller ship and higher quality over the main cruise lines. Viking really delivered. We were having lunch approximately 5 minutes of arriving at the cruise terminal. Ship is beautiful, food was fantastic no crowds. I enjoyed every second. Loved the high quality Viking offers. The first night in the restaurant was one of the best meals in recient memory. The buffet for dinner was also fantastic. Lots of choices, king crab legs etc. they also set up a cooking station outside grilling fish and various meats. They also have great cappuccino machines. The room is very well designed with lots of room and first run movies My only complaint and hopefully it’s not a trend to start charging extra is they are charging $10 for fitness classes that used to be included. Getting off the last morning was so nice. We hate the other cruise lines that have thousands of rude passengers pushing and shoving all trying to leave at once. They wanted you out of your room by 8 am and off the ship at your leasure by 9:45. Viking might charge more than the bigger cruise lines but I think it’s more than worth it. Read Less

Although we had been to the start and stop sites before several times, the intermediate stops in the Adriatic were new to us and quite interesting. The Orion is a lovely ship...just a few weeks old at our sailing so everything was impeccable. The service was probably the best ever experienced on a cruise, which was surprising given the newness of the vessel and crew. We found the casual dining to be more appealing than the main dining room, given the breadth of choices and the ability to sample many different tastes. Also, we made friends with servers there and made sure to it in their areas whenever possible. The entertainment was generally middling, typical cruise ship fare...although the professor who provided lectures on various topics was quite interesting and the planetarium was very novel and entertaining. Our younger son and his wife joined us for the second week from Venice to Athens and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. The gym/spa area was the best we'd ever seen...loved the ice room and the steam rooms being so adjacent. And the common areas/lounges were quite comfortable, especially the Explorers' Lounge that was just a few steps from our cabin. The best indicator of our pleasure with the Orion is that we are booked for another sailing on it in the Orient in September of 2019...and are planning as well for a 2020 Viking combination river and ocean cruise in Scandinavia. Viking is, in our opinion, simply the best cruise line afloat. Read Less

We chose Viking because we have been on other cruise lines and didn’t like how crowded they were. The cruise itself was spectacular. The staff was attentive and friendly. The ship was clean and comfortable; not overcrowded. The food in the main restaurant was superb. By far the best restaurant on the ship is the main restaurant. We ate at the speciality restaurants as well but preferred the main restaurant. I enjoyed the fact that you could go to dinner whenever you wanted. There were no assigned tables, times or waitstaff. The only complaint I would have with Viking is their customer service reps that you deal with before the cruise. I found them to be rude and unhelpful once the cruise was booked. They were particularly rude when I was attempting to book excursions. I did not do any of the included excursions and had some difficulty getting the excursions I wanted. Instead of telling me to be patient because additional spots open up on excursions that are popular I was told I should have booked a more expensive room (I chose the deluxe veranda because I don’t spend much time in the room but didn’t want the base room either). I felt these people were overly rude which was completely unnecessary and made me dread going on the trip. Read Less

On the ship, the staff always remembered us and greeted us with smiles, jokes, and friendly conversation. Our cabin was always impeccably clean with specific soda and snacks tweaked to our specifications. Our room service order was magnificent and delicious. The spa was amazing from the plunge pool to the jacuzzi pool to the Nordic steam and snow room. We spent most late afternoons at one of the outdoor pools with cocktails after lunch at the pool bar. We can’t wait to book another cruise. We were depressed for a week after returning home. We were too spoiled. Read Less

We’ve always wanted to go on a cruise to Italy and this was the best one we could find for the dates we wanted. The cruise was excellent and the service was exceptional. The ship and cabins were exceptionally clean but this is a new ship for Viking. Our only complaint about the cruise is that some of the included excursions were bus tours of the cities which gave us few opportunities for taking photos. The tour guide were very knowledgeable about the places they showed us but were difficult to understand on the bus tours. If you want to spend time in Rome, I suggest you get there a day or two earlier or purchase the pre cruise package. Dining on the ship was excellent with some of the best European food we’ve had. With the buffet style World Cafè for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you should never go hungry. And did I mention that the food is awesome? This was our second time on a Viking tour (our first was a river cruise) and there is no doubt in my mind, there will be more. Read Less

We traveled with our good friends from Wyoming and decided to try an ocean cruise following a great river cruise we had to France about 2 years prior to this trip. We were overall very happy with the entire cruise with very few exceptions. The ship was new so everything was wonderful from the cabins to the fitness area. We especially enjoyed the explorers lounge and the restaurants available each evening to enjoy wine and dinner with our friends. We were happy to dress up for the dinner each evening which added a special touch to the experience. In addition to the dining, we enjoyed the tours. We were especially happy that Viking provided plenty of education and information prior to touring each city on the cruise. We left feeling we knew so much more about the country and people. Our friends were a little disappointed with the reservation system for purchasing tours due to the fact there was limitation on numbers which did not allow us to choose the same tours for all of us on certain stops. They also were frustrated that exceptions were not made to accommodate adjustment to our tour schedules in order to allow us to be together even though we tried to call ahead of time within the guide lines and timelines. The consumer service department did help us at the last minute to grab a couple of spots on one of our tours and that was very helpful. We understand the priorities based on type of cabin, but the most popular options might be better to add additional seats rather than limit them based on a fixed number. Despite this issue we felt all the tour guides were very good and well prepared to deliver a quality tour experience. The buses and destinations for the most part were great and gave us a nice picture of the culture and people living in Italy. The entertainment was very good, however might have been geared more for an older group as we are all in our late 50s and early 60s and would like to see a bit more variety. Overall, however, we enjoyed most of the shows especially the opera night. We were very impressed with the detail to service throughout the entire boat. We had no bad service during the cruise and enjoyed being pampered during our stay. We plan use Viking every other year to allow us to tour more parts of the world. We feel that the cost is the only thing keeping us from traveling with you every year. We would have probably booked another trip, but we did not understand the savings of booking while on the boat until late in the process. We did not have time to get with your people and discuss due to the busy schedule at the end of the trip. Hats off to all the hard working people on the Viking ship!! we had a great time. Read Less

Many of my friends had been on various Viking Cruises including the first round the World on the Viking Sun. Heard nothing but excellent on all their trips. Everything went so smoothly for a first timer. Was concerned about airlines but things went ok going to Italy. Stuck in Venice airport coming back to USA, but that was weather. Now the ship was wonderful and I normally get sea sick. Didn’t. So smooth. Cabin was like a small apartment. Plenty of room, drawers, closets....PV1 cabin. All food was good, but I really enjoyed the World Cafe. So many choices and I did not get anything that was not good. There is The Restaurant ( problems sometimes) and others that you need to make the reservations for that were excellent. All ports were great, some better than others. We didn’t have any problems with excursions, and loved Sicily and Croatia (Krka Falls). Read Less

We began our trip with the extension in Tuscany, which was well worth both the time and money. Our Viking guide made it a very interesting and seamless time. The ship was very new, and the only problem was that the coffeemaker in our cabin was not working. No problem, as we loved having an American in the Living Room! The main dining room was excellent both for breakfast and for dinner. There is plenty of room in the public areas, so you never felt crowded. It is a very serene environment, just what we like after sightseeing. All of the staff was most eager to please, and provided service without intruding. We particularly enjoyed our excursions to Taormina, Bari and Venice. It was very hot, but they always had cold washcloths for us when we returned to the ship. A friend of mine recommended Viking as a way to visit Italy. I'm so sorry this is the path we chose. Onboard- jr. Penthouse is a fantastic room and clean. Other than that, I am NOT impressed and more than dissatisfied with the service, & ship amenities. The pool is EXTREMELY small, no casino, no evening entertainment (other than various musicians in areas of the ship), restaurant and buffet hours are limited & CLOSE EARLIER THAN HOURS LISTED. The guest services personnel ARE not informed of the various tours available & "waitlist " you if a tour is full. Waitlist means nothing other than you'd like to book it but can't. They have no regard for the traveler with limited time in ports, & do not attempt to assist in alternate arrangements. We had done two Viking River Cruises and wanted to experience a sea cruise. We were happy with our choice and the whole experience was wonderful including the food, the crew and the wonderful ship. We were impressed with the furnishings and the books were much appreciated as well as the extras such as blankets and cushions. We felt that we were very safe and cared for and that is important as we are seniors and far from home. Everyone on the ship were friendly and helpful. The entertainment was amazing and we think it surpassed any others we have had on vacations. The choices of music and dance were very good and also we do like the talks you gave us on our venues and some of the history. We really appreciated the Viking presence at the airports, the hotels for extensions and also in Venice at the ferry boats. We felt that though in a strange city we were always able to get advice and help when needed which is a great comfort. The cabin ard was very helpful and kept our state room amacculate and made sure our provisions were always replaced. Thank you for a wonderful experience. Viking knows it’s business and excels at it. The new ships are elegant and (as usual) meals, service and entertainment were all excellent. Our embarkation in Rome was noteworthy as we were greeted at the airport and driven to the ship in a singular car (not a bus). The restaurants were very nice, the food quality excellent and the staff friendly and respectful. We particularly liked Manfredi’s, but we’re also impressed with the selection and quality in the World Cafe and noted the kitchen staff’s hard work and obvious pride in presentation and service. The entertainment was “Near-Broadway”; the performers were very good and the staging and theatrics impressive. The ships public areas were beautiful; signage and directions done well (it’s a big vessel, getting disoriented was not uncommon); and elevators and stairwells adequate for the number of users. The rooms were large and well appointed; with a large bathroom, ample closet and drawer space and a very helpful and attentive “Butler.” Lastly, the payment methods for beverages and tips was a welcome improvement. The excursions were well executed, but we had mixed feelings about them in part due to one guests walking limitations. The excursion guides should be more explicit in describing the amount and difficulty levels of the excursion. Naples was ok, but the amount of walking was problematic. Sicily was great. Crotone was unimpressive. Bari was gorgeous and the walking tour well executed. Crotia was perhaps the most beautiful harbor, but the walking tour was too hilly and difficult. Venice was, unsurprisingly, mobbed. Read Less

There were Viking agents there almost round the clock to help us with anything. They took us on to the ship. The embarkation was the best of any ship we have taken. Smooth and efficient. Then the ship was absolutely beautiful. Our bags arrived very promptly and our cabin steward was right there to make sure that we were settled in and aquatinted with everything. The cabin was spacious, beautiful and very comfortable, as was the bathroom. It is a beautifully appointed ship with ample comfortable and elegant seating throughout. The ships staff were welcoming and helpful. I really can’t say enough about this entire experience. We stayed two extra nights in Venice, as we have always loved that city, and although the hotel was across the water from St Marks, it was very pleasant. In fact the hotel itself was amazing and very comfortable. This was our first experience with Viking, but it certainly will not be our last. So many passengers on our ship were repeat clients. Excellent service on a previous river cruise allowed us to look forward to this ocean cruise with much happy anticipation. Our pre-cruise stay in Madrid was wonderful. Our hotel was near the public transportation line and we had no trouble traveling throughout the beautiful city. We spent two days at the Prado and surrounding area, and never tired of walking around the town. The bullet train took us to Barcelona for our cruise, but the scheduling allowed us a second full day to explore the city and enjoy the food before we left port. We enjoyed the various dining options on the ship. The main restaurant offered table service for breakfast and dinner with a good variety of selections. It had open seating, and we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be seated. The World Cafe on an upper deck had a huge selection of choices in a buffet setting with both indoor and outdoor seating. In addition, there is a grill near the main pool and Mamsen's, offering some lighter fare in the comfortable Explorers Lounge. Finally, the ship offers to specialty restaurants for which reservations are required. Manfredi's offers Italian themed dishes; while The Chef's Table serves a fixed, five-course, "themed" menu that changes every couple of evenings. There is an included shorre excursion in each port, plus numeroud optional choices at additional cost. We found all the excursion guides to be extremely knowledgeable and engaging. Giulia's "Art and Architecture" tour in Florence was fascinating and fun. Swimming in the Mediterranean Sea while docked in Monaco was another highlight of our trip. Our post-cruise stay in Rome allowed us to experience the beautiful city and see Michelangelo's David. Traveling on the "Hop on-hop off" bus gave us the opportunity to explore many of the historic sites. We've already booked our next cruise with them for the Viking Homelands. Read Less

This was an excellent cruise line. One of the outstanding features is that it is really an adults only cruise. I have nothing against children but it's not relaxing when you have to listen to whiny children on a cruise you've worked so hard to be able to pay for. Time and place, etc. It was educational as well. Shore excursions offerings were spectacular and educational. The guides provided were excellent and knew their stuff. Another plus with Viking is that they don't try to sell you things while you are on your vacation. Have cruised Royal Caribbean's Alaska Cruise. While that cruise was enjoyable, they were always trying to sell us things like liquor packages, pictures, etc. They did not do this on Viking. Also big plus was the size of the ship. It was smaller and more intimate yet inclusive. Staff was excellent. Meals were very good. So nice to have a veranda in every stateroom. Would highly recommend Viking and will go again in two years on another cruise. Read Less
