The cruise ship was up to Viking normal high standards. The cabin was well prepared and continually tidied and readied..the cabin service usually forgot we didn`t wanted our beds turned back etc but minor point. We were very fortunate with some excellent weather throughout the voyage. The atmosphere on board was very relaxed throughout. The food was excellent and we much prefer the more relaxed format in the self service area as standards are not compromised at all. Mrs Wood`s hair appointment was average. Some of the included excursions were disappointing and the game needs to be upped here as we felt this was part of pushing you to pay for the far better extras ones. One of them just dropped us off in town to do our own thing.Juneau excursion was unnecessarily rushed and we had little time to enjoy the glacier facilities etc.Our extra whale watching at Icy strait Point was very good indeed. The lectures and talks were generally very good and the delivery was interesting and relaxed with most but not all of them.Kathy Slamp we found the best of them. Read Less

Priori river cruise with Viking and had a wonderful experience. Food was fantastic, service was stellar, everything was fantastic. The ports of call were interesting, shore excursions were very good (although, pricey, but that is common in Alaska). Loved the fact that they had a non-denominational Sunday service for those who were interested in attending and unable to get to a place of worship due to cruise schedule. Staff goes to great lengths to ensure you have everything you need. Disembarkation and embarkation procedures were thoroughly explained and went smoothly. My only two suggestions for improvement would be instead of having to use the room key for everything, arm bands with the chip would be much more convenient, and more show times for the on board planetarium. Fitness center was awesome, plenty of equipment. I took advantage of the opportunity for a massage and the spa was wonderful as well. Read Less

We were on Viking in the Caribbean and it was great so we decided when they open up the Alaska cruise we are going so we booked it two years ahead time . The flight in should have been earlier we lost the first day because the flight was so late in the day , but the ship was nice and the cabin was clean and roomy the dining was really good . The ports were great and organized for the excursions . The service is bar none they know you name and your wine choice at the dining rooms after a day or two. The servers are very friendly and get to know you . The cleaning crew is also wonderful doing anything to make you feel at home. I would highly recommend this cruise with Viking they make the overall trip special and memorable. We have already booked another cruise with Viking this January in the Caribbean on the Viking Star or third ship with Viking. Read Less

I chose this cruise because my husband and I wanted to see Alaska--but not on a huge ship. The Orion was perfect with passengers numbering about 950. The ship was beautiful and our deluxe veranda cabin was great. The ship had everything a person could ask for. The dining options provided ambience, amazing choices, and delicious food. There was plenty to do onboard--special presentations, cocktail lounges with musical entertainment, dancing, and shows with terrific talent. There was a pool and games on deck and in the lounges. My husband also used the fitness center which was very important to him since he interrupted a physical therapy regimen to go on the trip. Finally, the staff was above compare. The included excursions were fine but carefully chosen extra excursions really added to the trip. We chose the helicopter/dog mushing in Seward (expensive but worth the splurge), glacier sightseeing by boat, Skagway by Streetcar, the railroad ride to White Pass, and whale watching. One suggsestion for couples traveling together. Book the same category room. My husband and I booked the deluxe veranda but my cousin and her husband, with whom we were traveling, booked one level up--the deluxe veranda with more square footage. We did not know that they would be able to book restaurants and excursions 10 days before we could. We had planned our choices ahead of time, but most of what we had chosen was not available to us 10 days after they booked. However, we enjoyed this trip so much that we booked a river cruise (our second cruise) with Viking for next year. Read Less

Have done Viking Ocean before and realized that this was the first year that they were doing the Alaska route. We were so impressed with our previous experience, we wanted to try them again. The Viking Orion is a beautiful ship and the staff keep it looking brand new every day. We particularly enjoyed the various dining options - the World Cafe, The Restaurant and the pool side cafe. Each has its own ambience and type of service, but each is equal in quality and service. We also enjoyed a session in the planetarium which is new for Viking Ocean. Something different that we enjoyed. Spent several sessions in the Spa and had wonderful treatments. Felt like new people when we left. We spaced them between the more demanding excursion days so that we would be relaxed after those days. Treatments were professional and awesome. Thought the overall experience was wonderful! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Read Less

My dad especially loved not being rushed when eating. We could sit back and enjoy the company. The food was wonderful. There were so many choices and it was great to try new things. The staff was professional while also being friendly and available at all times. We just needed to ask for something and they helped right away. I could have sailed around the world on that ship...I never wanted to get off. The excursions were ok. We saw wild life and were able to explore new cities. The show's each night were great. They were the perfect length! The music was fun...I wish we had a sing along night. I highly recommend this cruise line and we plan on going on many more. Thank you so much. Read Less

We previously sailed on the Viking Idi/Viking Kvasir on the Rhine Getaway river cruise in June, 2016 and had such a great time we immediately booked the Alaska and the Inside Passage cruise on the Viking Orion as soon as this itinerary became available in April, 2017. We were not disappointed. We have sailed on two previous ocean cruises (before Viking Ocean ships were launched) and this was by far the best. From every aspect, from trip planning and booking through shore excursions, dining, cabin, embarkation and disembarkation, our trip was virtually flawless. My wife has celiac disease and is therefore strictly gluten and soy free. We made this aware to Viking early on and Viking ensured that no matter where we dined onboard, from the Restaurant, though the World Cafe, Manfredi's and the snack bars, she was accommodated. Our restaurant manager, Ariel Aribella, ensured that no matter which venue we dined in on a particular day, my wife as able to view the next days gluten free options and select her meals in advance. The ship itself was beautiful and spotless. I have read virtually every review of the Orion since its maiden voyage and was frankly surprised at some of the negative comments. Most negative comments, not all, seemed to reflect personal preferences of the reviewer, such as food quality, cabin layout, excursion locations and guides, etc. We experienced none of these issues, except for one minor problem on the Juneau included excursion, which we believe was incorrectly described. More on that later We selected our excursions the day they became available after creating our wish list on the My Viking Journey website and each of these was available. We chose three optional and four included excursions. The best ones were the optional excursions in Sitka, Icy Strait Point, and Skagway. Our only disappointment was as stated above, the included Salmon Hatchery and Mendenhall Glacier Experience. The salmon hatchery was fine, but our only view of the Mendenhall Glacier was from an observation point five miles away and the only way we knew it was the glacier and not a cloud was because our guide told us it was. Other people on this tour had the same comments and we made our issue known to Viking Guest Services. They acknowledged they had had similar complaints and we received a phone call the next day from Viking promising to address the issue. All of our other excursions were great, from the History and Native Animals of Sitka, to the Bear Search in Icy Strait Point, and especially the White Pass Railroad in Skagway. The outstanding weather during the last two added immensely to our enjoyment of these excursions. Cabin: From our virtual exploration of the Orion on the My Viking Journey website, we pretty much knew what to expect from our Penthouse Veranda Stateroom, and we were not disappointed . The cabin was spacious for our needs, the storage spaces were more than adequate, even for our way overpacked suitcases (lesson learned). The bathroom was well laid out and we never felt crowded. The balcony was large enough and had plenty of space. Our cabin attendant, Romantino and his assistant were outstanding. Every need was immediately attended to and the cabin was spotless each time we returned. The cruise director, Spence Robson was fantastic. Not only was he constantly available around the ship, he introduced all of the activities, including the port talks, the entertainers, and the production shows, he also is a great performer. We enjoyed the production shows by the Viking Oasis show band and the Viking Vocalists. They were very professional and enthusiastic. Read Less

We had always wanted to visit Alaska and when Viking announced in Dec of 2016 we booked. It was exciting counting down the days, all 888 of them. Viking and their staff were wonderful. Every one we came in contact greeted you warmly and were glad to be of service. The excursions department were able to accommodate our requests. The food was great, especially the Specialty restaurants. We ate at The World Cafe alot. The good was as good there as in The Restaurant. Viking really had the tenders organized. We never wanted more than 15 minutes to set to poer. This was one area we were really worried about; however, they had worked it out. We are booked on the Southern Crossing in March and before this cruise we were considering cancelling. After the experience on Viking Orion we are looking forward to the Viking Jupiter, our 3rd Viking ship. I cannot say enough good things about Viking and the overall wonderful experience aboard Viking Orion. I would highly recommend Viking and look forward to many trips with them. I would love to submit except all 1200 were deleted trying to photograph and eagle in flight on the last night. Will have to enjoy other's photos. Read Less

My wife and I enjoy Viking cruises. This one was no exception. The ship is geared to folks who are, i would say, in their mid-50's and older. Calm, not loud and noisy. No casinos. My wife had taken a similar cruise 50 years ago, just before we were married, and we decided that this would be a great way to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, and it was. Dining on board is really good - i did manage to hold weight gain to 5 pounds. Good basic food in all dining venues, and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner. We almost always take a shore extension at the beginning of the cruise - lets us get used to the time zone before the cruise starts. This extension was in Vancouver - just wish that it had been a day or two longer. The Hyatt Regency was very nice and centrally located. The city tour was fine. We do excursions in virtually every port, and there were many to choose from in addition to the free guided walking tour provided in each port. The White Pass (Yukon) Railroad trip out of Skagway was especially enjoyable. The salmon were late this year, meaning that there were fewer bears than otherwise. Seeing remnants of the 1964 earthquake and tsunami, including the petrified trees and the fact that the town of Valdez was literally recreated about 20 miles away, were fascinating. Saw some whales, seals, and sea otters, as well as bears (not as many), goats, and a zillion bald eagles. We are signed up for a couple more Viking cruises (river and ocean) and recommend them to anyone making inquiry. What I really like, after many years of business travel, is having everything planned ahead of time. From the time that you land at the airport and are met by a Viking representative at the airport until you board your flight home, you are on auto-pilot virtually the entire time. Read Less

My second trip to Alaska, husband’s first, our first Viking cruise. Sailed out of Vancouver but had no time to explore the city. Seamless embarkation process. Staff was amazing all over the ship, room stewards perfect, dining attendants very attentive, even the chefs in the buffet would fix something extra on the spot. Cabin was very comfortable, bathroom great. So many gathering places and quiet areas to hang out. Only went to one evening show but we highly recommend the Explorer Dome, sign up for all 3 shows as soon as you board. The ports were all interesting, mostly did the included but did book two private ones. They had interesting speakers who presented talks on the history and people we were visiting. The debarkation process was much appreciated. We were put on a bus in Seward and driven to Anchorage where we had access to a meeting room at a Hilton until it was time for them to take us to the airport. We got some good discounts when we booked another cruise while on board, now just have to wait till 2021 to do the British Isles. Can’t wait to be back on a Viking ship! Read Less

This was our second Viking Ocean cruise (our first was Viking Homelands in 2017--awesome!), this time on the Viking Orion. As with the Viking Sea, the ship is simply stunning. It is very elegant, tastefully appointed, and so well-designed that it never seems crowded. You feel like you are staying at an elegant, boutique hotel. On par with the ship itself, was the crew--without exception friendly, helpful, and unobtrusive--and the food, which was excellent. The Orion has a planetarium (the Explorer's Dome), which honestly was not particularly impressive and unfortunately took up space that on the other Viking ships is better occupied by the upper floor of the Explorer's Lounge. The only downside was that this was Viking's first season in Alaska, and in some respects it showed--we had to tender in several places rather than dock being the new guy, and a few of the included shore excursions need some fine tuning. (Valdez is not visited by many cruise ships for a reason--but with a new pier and terminal it has a lot of potential, and does have a fascinating history. Definitely recommend scheduling an optional excursion here). But these were very minor hiccups that in no way detracted from a great experience. Viking is our cruise line of choice from now on. We choose this cruise as we wanted to do an Alaska cruise. We choose Viking because of the fact that no casino or kids under 18 years old!! We had family members that have done Viking river cruises and just couldn't say enough great things about them. So we decided to go along with them on this Alaska cruise. We have no complaints about the cruise or shore excursions at all! We will only use Viking Cruise Lines for all of our ocean or river cruises. The crew members were fantastic and very professional and polite at all times. The crew was very courteous and knowledgeable, it was great interacting with the crew. Our chief steward was very professional and was a great professional at what she did, and how is maintained our cabin. My wife celebrated her birthday while on this cruise, we did not notify the cruise line of this. She was greatly surprised when we returned to our cabin on June 17th to find a cake and a bottle of sparking wine. What a great surprise. Thank you and your crew members for such a fantastic trip. This was our first ocean cruise and you made it very special. You definitely have two travelers whom will only travel with your cruise line. Thank you very much for a wonderful time. Read Less

Pre-cruise days in Vancouver not strictly worth it, because you see a lot of totem poles and nature you'll see in Alaska, but it's a beautiful city so there are no regrets. The vaunted Viking pre-boarding experience was a disaster, with no one to meet us at the airport or the embarcadero, leaving my wife and I to escort a confused and infirm elderly couple in the same predicament to the boarding area. Apologies were delivered, but I never got the impression anyone appreciated the magnitude of this failure and it remains a smudge on the experience. Onboard, everything was wonderful. I wondered how flexible the dining options would be on a "fancy" cruise compared to the 4-day Carnival cruises we sometimes take to Baja, but there was nothing to worry about there. Something was always available when needed, and everything from room service breakfast to late night snacks were well prepared, fresh, and plentiful. We did scheduled dining a couple of nights and buffet most others, and never had trouble finding space for up to six. Shore excursions were a mixed bag. Availability for booking the official excursions was incredibly poor, and I didn't feel like they were a better value or experience than simply booking yourself. The evening port talks were great, and it's very nice they're recorded. I feel like the excursion problem, along with the problem with embarkation, are growing pains from being a relatively new route and I think they'll improve quickly. As of now, excursions were the other low point of an otherwise wonderful cruise. Being on a beautifully decorated ship with many comfortable gathering areas, all generally older adults, and only one loudspeaker announcement per day was a great way to spend 10 days. Afternoon tea quickly became a must, and evenings in the observation lounge or spotting sealife from the railings were perfect. The cabin was also very comfortable and well sized, and the crew was outstanding without exception. Read Less

We chose this cruise to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with my wife's sister and her husband. We had a double wedding ceremony so wanted to do something together that would be very special, a once in a life time experience. Viking Ocean cruises fulfilled that experience. Every stateroom had a balcony with an unobstructed view. A great place to have a glass of wine together and enjoy the wonderful views. Meals were just as wonderful. You were presented with an unlimited number of choices and each was delicious as the next. The specially restaurants were even better and did not cost any extra. Beer or wine were free at lunch and dinner. The lounge areas were beautiful as was the live music every evening. The staff were great and greeted you with a smile and by name. We took advantage of included and optional excursions that gave us the trip of a life time. We saw eagles, puffins, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, seals, seal rookery, brown and black bears, glaciers, a calving glacier and absolutely beautiful scenery. If you want the best experience, choose Viking and enjoy every minute! Read Less

Our first Viking Ocean Cruise after three river cruises. Our experience was outstanding. The cabin was spacious and comfortable, the bathroom is outstanding. We really enjoyed the snow grotto and spa. The food was very good in all venues and the service was excellent as usual. The Orion being a new ship was immaculate, unlike another cruise line we traveled on. We made good use of the laundry as Alaska required various types of clothing. The included shore excursions were generally very good except for Juneau. Disembarking was very well done even when tendering. Our cruise visited ports not serviced by the mega ships which made those ports more enjoyable. The entertainment was very good for limited productions, we sail Viking for the experiences not the gambling and hard sell. We didn’t use the fitness center. The fact of no children made the cruise even more enjoyable. The entire ship’s crew made you feel welcome and valued. Before booking our Alaskan cruise with Viking, my husband and I did extensive research about not only Viking, but many competitors as well. We feel, we got exactly what we expected and found that some of the complaints we did hear were from passengers who had no idea what they signed up for and then complained about it. Viking was a great experience for us and exactly what we wanted in an ocean vacation. Viking was enticing to us for what it offers, but for many things it does not offer as well. We wanted a cruise with no casinos, no children, no photographers snapping pictures constantly which we've lived through before, only a very small area for smokers, no rides/fancy water slides, and no charge for self-service laundry or drinks. My husband and I are avid life long learners. We wanted a cruise with like minded travelers who were interested in learning as much as possible. We got that! We enjoyed the many learning opportunities including the small Viking museum on board, port talks, enrichment videos on the cabin television, and Explorers' Dome. There were also guest lectures and talks with the Viking resident historian. We ran out of time to do all those educational options, but will next cruise! We really enjoyed all the dining experiences. Our room service for breakfast was right on time and what we ordered, The World Cafe offered a variety of food. We always enjoyed what we got and the many seating options affording us amazing views. We ate at Manfredi's twice and The Chef's Table three times. Manfredi's is an Italian restaurant, and the food was superb. We truly enjoyed The Chef's Table experience which we will caution is not for everyone. There's a set menu with paired wine for each course. You need to really be a foodie and be adventurous with your palate. We are, so we loved trying new food and wine. Again, we researched the dining options and knew exactly what we were getting. Plus all menus are posted on the cabin tv's, Voyager app, and outside the restaurants. The Restaurant was an excellent dining option as well. We enjoyed everything we ordered. One of our favorite treats was at Mamsen's. We went down early for breakfast several mornings and had their traditional Norwegian waffle with coffee where we could sit in the front of the ship relaxing with an ocean view and exceptional service. We did not purchase the optional alcoholic beverage package, but instead opted for the included wines. We really enjoyed the variety of wines from various parts of the world we were offered at lunch and dinner. We never had to wait long for a table or our food. The reason we didn't give dining a five star, we would have given it a 4.5 star if it were an option, is we felt there should have been more Alaskan food options which was advertised. We truly enjoyed the LivNordic Spa with snow grotto, steam sauna, jacuzzi, mineral pool, and heated loungers. It was so refreshing and relaxing. We went to the spa eight out of our ten days and were able to enjoy it each time with minimal passengers present. The staff was always making sure everything was in tip-top condition and took the time to get to know us and chat with us for as long as we wanted to continue talking. The service was exceptional. All crew members seemed genuinely happy and had amazing memories. When we entered many of the eating venues, the servers knew our preferences without even asking and greeted us warmly. They always treated us with respect and would spend many minutes just chatting with us. They took very good care of us. They not only greeted us, asked us how we were doing, attended to any concerns we had, but also kept the ship very clean in all the public areas and our cabin. As we've said before, we knew exactly what to expect for all our shore excursions. Again, we heard some complaints from passengers who didn't read what they were buying and then complained it wasn't what they thought. All of our purchased excursions were a five star except one. We did a whale watching tour, kayaking among the glaciers, bus/train ride to the Yukon, and Zodiac experience. We would give all those excursions a five star. The taste of Juneau was a bit disappointing as it was suppose to be more hands on cooking and learning about Alaskan cuisine than what it was. We did three free excursions and enjoyed two of the three. It would be nice if Viking had two free options - one for people with mobility issues and one for people who can do a tour that's moderate and above. We understand to make the free excursion available to everyone, it had to be a bus tour with easy walks, but it would have been nice to have more variety for the free excursion. Passengers also need to remember the amount or variety of animals seen on excursions is not within Viking's control nor is the weather. Come prepared. We were grateful to see what wild life we saw. We enjoyed the entertainment. The pianist and violinists that performed in the atrium were very talented. We also went to most of the shows in the theater where we could sing along and enjoy very fun performers. The cruise director and assistant cruise director were so warm and welcoming. They did a superb job both performing and making sure all activities ran smoothly. We also noticed how many passengers were into fitness and taking the stairs rather than the elevators. That was refreshing as well as not having to walk through several smoking areas to get to our destination. We met so many friendly passengers from all over the world. While we were among some of the youngest, we're both 52, we felt very comfortable and enjoyed ourselves. There were many opportunities to visit other passengers if we wanted during meals or the Wintergarden's tea time which we thoroughly enjoyed as well as opportunities to find a quiet, private spot where we could just enjoy each other. We were happy with all aspects of our cruise. Although there were some minor issues, there was nothing that would deter us from going on Viking again. It was truly a memorable voyage. Read Less

Alaska was a location we had always wanted to visit and when we received advance notification from Viking in December 2016, we booked immediately. We have cruised with Viking before (river and sea) and everything they offer is first class. Their smaller ships allow access to ports that larger ships cannot access and the Alaska cruise was one that goes further north than the 'normal' cruises. The ship is fantastic and offers so much - outside cabins for all; superb restaurants - from the World Café to the Chef's table and Manfredi's - all offer superb food with no additional charge for the last two restaurants - great quality and a little bit special. The ship also offers a great spa and two swimming pools (one an infinity at the back of the ship). There are plenty of areas to sit and relax - the Wintergarden or the Explorers' Lounge are so comfortable - either to read, nap or just take in the 'views'. The staff are so warm and friendly and really can't do enough for you - they genuinely want you to have a great time. Entertainment on board is excellent - from the shows in the theatre, to the musicians who perform in the Atrium and the Torshavn 'nightclub' - they all provide entertainment that is brilliant. Viking provide inclusive shore visits at all ports and are always worth utilising - they provide a great insight the place you are visiting and the use of local guides helps provide so much information. We would certainly do this cruise again, Alaska is a fantastic and unique place to visit! Read Less

I have wanted to see Alaska and the Inland Passage for years, but not via a floating hotel with 4,000+ strangers. When we learned Viking was going to have ships with a capacity of just under 1,000, I said "Sign me up!" Any smaller ship would have been prohibitively expensive and not of the quality of Viking. Although Viking was still feeling its way into this new venue - 2019 was its first Alaskan cruises - its service was excellent. Food quality and variety were up to the standards to which we had been exposed on our Rhine River cruise. Staff is friendly. Daily activities abound for both aboard and on shore. The variety of on shore excursions was very good, although a couple we had wanted to do were sold out on the first day (!). Nonetheless, we still had a grand time. Some other pluses for adult travelers are no mobs of kids and comfortable staterooms. And, there are no inside rooms, so every room has a view to the outside world. On board laundry (free) means you don't have to overpack. Aside from the wide selection of food, there is also a variety of eating venues, all of which we found quite pleasant. Daily evening entertainment was provided...if you were able to stay up after a long day's worth of activity. Our cruise was from Vancouver, B.C. to Seward/Anchorage, AK. We opted to spend a couple of days extra at each end of the trip to explore. And I highly recommend doing so. Both areas have many sights to see and are friendly. This was one trip that neither Chris nor I wanted to return home from. She and I both wanted to stay! Next time we will arrange to see Denali also. Read Less

Our first cruise on a larger ship, we have only ever been on expedition ships. Although 930 passengers the ship never felt crowded, lots of large public areas. Excellent meals in all restaurants, no extra charge for the specialist restaurants, Chefs table and Italian. Lovely spa area, even a snow dome!! Excellent gym facilities and equipment. A free excursion in every port with optional extra’s available. All excursions were well organised and excellent guides. All staff were friendly, smiling and enjoyed their work. Just the right amount of entertainment in the theatre, with quality singers. Lovey infinity pool at the stern of the ship. Casual smart dress for the restaurants, which suited us. Free wine and soft drinks available with lunch and dinner was a bonus. Very nice afternoon teas served around the indoor pool area. The indoor pool area had a retractable roof, very nice in good weather. Would definitely use Viking again. Read Less

Choose Viking cruise based on positive prior Viking tour experience and smaller ship size. Ship personnel, amenities and dining experience more than met our expectations. Land tours were interesting and at a reasonable pace with adequate free time. On board included spa was exceptional, relaxing and regularly available. We got to know the dining staff who regularly went out of their way to accommodate our dining and drink likes even if they were not on the menu. The daily buffets offered a wide selection of food and dessert selections. Daily room service provided went smoothly. Daily news letter outline the on board and land tour itineraries to help in planning activities. On-board shows and talks were entertaining and educational. The mid ship pool area offered drinks, snacks and special pool menu. Pool area provided seats and lounge chairs over looking large windows in which to view whales, mountains and ports. Open mid ship area offered live music and games. Front explorer lounge offered drinks snacks, food and views. Read Less

We chose this cruise, because as our 49th state, Alaska seemed to offer a foreign type of experience in an American context, that we had not previously explored. We both enjoyed the balance of excursions that provided a historical perspective of the indigenous cultures as well as the Russian influences that preceded our purchase, and the contemporary reality of a new Alaska. Visits to museums, indigenous villages and totem pole parks, as well as exhibits showing the flora and fauna of the state had a high educational value. The total take away of this cruise was extremely enriching and surpassed our expectations. The dining experience was very eclectic. The five on board restaurants offered cuisine that encompassed tastes of the local fare, as well as interpretations on Pacific Rim fusion, Italian, American basics (fried and BBQ chicken), and a buffet that changed daily. All the food was well prepared, but our recommendation would be to take advantage of the Chef's Choice Restaurant for their five-course menus and wine pairings -delicious! The on-board entertainment and activities included so many options that it would be almost impossible to experience all of them. Among my favorites were the fitness room, the sports deck( where shuffle board, mini golf, and ping-pong tables were available), and the indoor pool area which could be enjoyed even during inclement weather. Service throughout the ship was impeccable. I always felt that there were no problems on the ship, only solutions. Read Less

After four previous Viking River Cruises and four Viking Ocean Cruises, all overseas, my wife and I had high expectations on our Alaska cruise on the Viking Orion. We were delighted with the total experience - onboard accommodations and service, onboard sightseeing (the Orion "nuzzling up" to glaciers was an incredible experience!), and shore excursions. The quality of food & drink at the buffet, plus at the reservations-required specialty restaurants, was amazing! Impeccable service by Viking's wonderful ship officers and support staff was superb, and our familiarity with the ship and its services made for a very comfortable experience throughout. A benefit of cruising on a cruise ship that's relatively uncrowded (compared to other "mega" cruise ships): we had no problems providing "how to" tips to other travelers who were traveling Viking Ocean for the first time. We took the post-cruise Denali Extension and were glad we did, recommend that highly. The only item that was sub-par: due to port overcrowding at Vancouver, embarkation was prolonged and not entirely pleasant - a one-time incident to be sure but which could have been eased by more planning and on-scene management. The itinerary matched exactly the route (North Pacific) we desired especially Tokyo embarkation and Vancouver disembarkation ports. We had sailed on many Viking River cruises and we were confident that Viking Ocean would not disappoint. We were not disappointed! The ships are beautiful, well appointed and with only 900 passengers they are a proper size for us. We love children but it was very nice and relaxing to have ALL passengers in the adult category. The mix of passengers were well traveled and so very nice to share dinners with strangers whom became friends before the evening was finished, The lectures were enjoyable and educational. Some of the best lecture programs on any cruise line we have been on. The entertainment was simple and extremely professional. The singing/dance performers were only 4 but gave us a better performance than big over the top huge groups on other luxury cruise lines. No photo taking....no casinos, no bingo, great lounge areas for relaxing are all pluses. A retractable roof over the pool and outdoor entertainment area is surely a plus. We were very pleased with all the food and eating venues on the Viking Orion but believe all Regent ships and on some Oceania ships the overall food is a small touch better. Since the completion of our first Viking Ocean cruise we have voted our approval by booking our next 2 Viking ocean cruises namely in January 2020 to the Caribbean and another cruise in May 2021 "Into the Midnight Sun".
