It was one of your flash sales and again a great time -service was excellent, meals were great and just another great experience. There is no other cruise line that comes close to being as good as Viking. The daily trips were very good lots of activities to do and places visited were beautiful. Tour guides were great at making sure the pace was right for all to enjoy the natural beauty of where ever we were visiting. Can NOT say enough about the service whether the meal staff or our room people--everyone was very friendly professional and could not do enough to insure we were satisfied with everything they were doing and offering to make a great experience. Will NOT hesitate to book another cruise with Viking in fact we took advantage of the special offer Viking offered for a future cruise when we were on this cruise--so we definitely took advantage of the great savings offered for a future cruise. Viking's reputation and satisfied friends and family members led us to this outstanding first Viking Cruise. We have cruised many times before on other cruise lines. Should you want first class service, a relaxed atmosphere, pleasant surroundings, happy crew members, excellent entertainment and culinary delights this is the cruise line for you. This was our first time in Italy. I can't imagine being exposed to the ancient culture, history, and timeless beauty of this country in any better fashion. We finished our cruise with a Rome extension. The hotel was up to Viking standards with Viking's own concierge there to answer any questions. We took advantage of five dining opportunities: 1. The main dining room (excellent) 2. The buffet dining room (similar fare to the main dining room but easy and quick) 3. The poolside burger bar (very good for lunch after a shore excursion) 4. The Italian specialty restaurant Manfredi's (Mmmm good ribeye) 5. The Chef's table ( unique cuisine) Bravo Viking! We'll be back! Read Less

Timing. Ports of interest. Some of the included tours could have been better in Naples and Messina. Probably a guide to excellent shopping for the wife would have been nice. We enjoyed the World Cafe, high tea, evening entertainment. Our mistake was not taking some of the longer tours, which would have been more interesting. Not Viking's fault, but ours.. Lesson learned. We met several couples on the ship and with them each evening we would go the to top level Explorers' Lounge to watch the ship leave port. The crew, housekeeping, dining, etc., was excellent. Couldn't ask for more. We really enjoyed the World Cafe and Manfredi's. Great desserts ( My highlight) We have told many friends about Viking and the service. Friends just went to see the Northern Lights on Viking. Not sure what cruise or ship. Other frends went river cruising, which we did several years ago from Lyon. Keep up the good work and we will return.. Read Less

We chose Viking because of all the cruise lines we have been on, it was the best in every way. They took care of every detail -- from the time we boarded our plane from home to the time we got back home. The personnel were outstanding - personal, attentive, friendly, and service oriented. Our room was always clean and attended to, the food servers wonderful and we most especially like our wine steward. The people we met while we dined and were on our excursions with were so nice -- it added to the fun of the trip. We like that there are no small children aboard as the focus is adult food and ambiance. The fitness and recreation also geared toward adults - excellent. The excursions we chose were wonderful. I especially loved the excursion to the winery in the Calabria region as it took me back to my roots - Pompeii a little bit of history. No matter where we were the tour guides were attentive and informative. We extended our tour in Tuscany. That part of the tour far exceeded my expectations. We had a guide, Daniel, who tended to those of us who stayed at the villa from the time we disembarked the ship until we boarded our plane home. In between the excursions, the ambiance, the people at the villa -- I cannot say enough good things about the whole experience. We will always choose Viking Cruises over any other cruise line. We had been wanting to try Viking Ocean as an alternative to our previous favorites, Windstar (yachts, not sailing ships) and Regent, so we chose this one week itinerary from Venice to Rome and were joined by long time friends for the voyage. We were aware that this was only the second sailing for the Orion and that there might be some rough edges still to be worked out. Indeed there were. For starters we got three different versions of when cabins would be ready. The first was in the cruise documents that were mailed indicating that because we were in a Penthouse Veranda stateroom we would have access by 1 PM. The second was at the embarkation desk in the terminal where we were told we could get in by 12. The third was at guest services where we were told no, it would be 2 PM. It finally turned out that a mass PA announcement about 2 PM was the only way we, and presumably all the other guests, knew that all the cabins were ready. To back up a step, the reason we were at guest services right after boarding was because a large portion of the cruise cards that were created at the terminal desk at check-in didn't work! A large group of people had to have their cards re-issued which temporarily overwhelmed the guest services desks. The next, admittedly small, irritant was when our cabin steward oriented us to the stateroom and pointed out that the Nespresso machine would only dispense hot water. Bummer. I had been looking forward to some tasty coffee selections without room service or going out of the cabin. I would simply say don't advertise in your marketing materials that there is a Nespresso machine in each cabin if all they do is spew out hot water for the instant Nescafe provided. Our biggest ongoing hassle during the entire cruise was in regard to the Silver Spirits drink package. Most of the wait staff were simply not familiar with it. They would try to locate something on their high tech tablets they use and then would say it's not available or "we've run out of it". Had it not been for an extremely competent wine steward, Enea, this might never have been straightened out. Admittedly, things did get better as the week progressed. But this feeling of disorganization and lack of familiarity with things carried over into the main dining room. Every evening we ate there I would characterize the scene as frenzied...waiters rushing around, staring at their hand-held devices. Just not calm and relaxing. That's not a knock on the people themselves. All of them were friendly, helpful, and a delight to talk with. The comment is really directed at management and the prior training of the staff in such things as the drink package. At sail away time the Explorers Lounge was understaffed, at times near impossible to get a drink. I observed one bartender who was so harried and overwhelmed that he picked up the phone and told his supervisor he needed more help. Then he decided it was time for his dinner break, I guess to escape the confusion. Many of the shore excursions were good to excellent. However, some comments were heard regarding the difficulty understanding some of the guides. My wife and her friend had the misfortune of being on the worst excursion of the week. It was titled "Alberobello, the Trulli Village". It was so disorganized and provoked so many complaints that Viking later sent a notice to the cabins saying they apologized and were giving a 50% refund. 50%? I'm not sure why if you are admitting the excursion was a bust you don't refund 100%, but anyway that was their decision. After spending over 600 words on the negatives, here are the positives. The ship is gorgeous! The cabins are generously sized with more than enough drawer and closet room. Bathrooms are relatively large and function well. All the public spaces are extremely attractive and spotless. The spa is first class. Entertainment, including the pianist, the string duo and the guitarist, was excellent. The stage band and the four entertainers who sang and danced were also quite good, especially the night they did the salute to Broadway. There are so many enrichment activities it's impossible to see them all. For example, we never made it to the observatory which was disappointing, but on a seven day cruise who has the time? The lectures were quite good and could be viewed on the TV later if you missed them. Being high-tech multimedia productions, the port talks were the best and most informative I've ever experienced. One of the attractions of this cruise for us was the more unusual ports we visited. Sibenik was the nicest, calmest Croatian port we've ever seen, probably because of the limited size of vessels that can stop there. Bari and Crotone are somewhat off the beaten track. Messina was okay. Naples was, well...Naples was Naples. The food was good to very good, but frankly not the best we've ever experienced. Being in a Penthouse Veranda we were offered two nights each in both specialty restaurants, the Chef's Table and Manfredi's Italian. I would not do two nights again at the Chef's Table, but would definitely repeat two dinners in Manfredi's. That was clearly the best food we had. As for service, again I will say that in general it was excellent. The crew was friendly, courteous, helpful and fun. Even the harried bartender in the Explorers Lounge was pleasant enough to the guests. He did not let his frustration spill over into his customer service. I would sincerely look forward to another voyage on Viking Ocean, whether the Orion or another of their ships. It might be interesting to see if the rough edges are worked out on the Orion, but whether it's Orion or another vessel next time I'd like at least a couple of days at sea to explore all that we did not get to experience this time. We chose Viking Ocean Cruises based on our experience with Viking River Cruises in 2015 and our desire to visit the western Mediterranean. We ended up sailing the Orion on its maiden voyage. The ship is absolutely wonderful. Viking has translated their river ship feel into small cruise ships. We really enjoyed the restaurants, public areas of the ship, stateroom, crew, cruise directors team, entertainment, cultural experiences, ease of travel, and the optional excursions. Our only less than excellent experience was in the included excursions. This may be us comparing the included river cruise shore excursions with the ocean ones. The port cities on the Rhine may be more amenable for the included shore excursion experience than the ocean port cities. Also, we found that our optional shore excursions covered most of the same ground as the included shore excursions. We are sailing with Viking Ocean Cruises again in April 2019. We will explore the Baltic and Russia on that trip. Read Less

We had a fabulous time on our Mediterranean Odyssey with Viking. It was our first trip to Croatia which we had heard was beautiful. It was beyond beautiful...just breathtaking. We spent our 44th anniversary in Monte Carlo and had dinner in the Italian restaurant. It was a wonderful experience. We had taken two river cruises with Viking and this was the first ocean cruise with Viking. The level of service was was just as good although there were more people to take care of. The included excursions were first class and we were so pleased with the tours in each location. The tour guides were enthusiastic and professional and well informed. The food was incredible and the specialty restaurants were wonderful. You could have anything you like in the World Cafe we loved our meal there. We hope to take more cruises with Viking because of the wonderful sevice we have experienced and Viking has set the bar high enough that I am sure that we would be hard to please with any other cruiseline. We chose Viking because we have always wanted to see Europe and this seemed to be an economical and exciting way to see several different countries. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend Viking and the Mediterranean cruise itinerary which included Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Greece, and Croatia . We were on the maiden cruise of the Orion and the ship was beautiful, the food was delicious and plentiful, and the crew was awesome. Our cabin was very comfortable as was our bed. We had plenty of room. The cruise was aimed more at an older clientele and I wouldn't recommend it for young couples. The entertainment onboard ship was tailored mainly to the cultural aspect of our cruise and added to the enjoyment of the ports we visited. Viking included one excursion at each port that we visited in the price and we really enjoyed these trips which usually included a tour of the city we were visiting. I do wish they also included beach excursions as part of the experience. We saw many beautiful beaches and I really wished we had had the chance to visit and enjoy them. I also would have liked our tour guides to hand out emergency numbers in the event you became separated or needed help of some kind. We really loved the cruise and plan on taking a river cruise with Viking next year in the summer. Read Less

Having experienced a Viking river cruise 2 years ago, we thought we would try an ocean cruise. We arrived at the departure city 10 days in advance to explore and enjoy - then went to the ship. Vueling Airlines (normally I would not name an airline - but this organization deserves to be mentioned) lost one of our bags and the folks at Viking went the extra distance (literally - from Monte Carlo to Nice) to recover the bag even though they were NOT part of the problem. Customer service was perseverant and excellent! Following the official christening a week prior, we were the first passengers to experience this brand new ship - and what a treat it was! These folks know what it costs to offer a 5 star trip and do not nickel and dime you along the way. Viking does not do anything on the 'cheap'. They truly make it a 5 star experience. Just prior to arrival, we were informed by e-mail that we had a complimentary upgrade to a Penthouse Veranda Stateroom (possibly because we had sailed with Viking in the past). Cabins are very comfortable and spacious with lots of storage within. Little things like a heated bathroom floor are abundant and well thought out. The cabin attendants are quick, thorough and very well trained. The ship graciously provides you with a list of the room's contents...and relative value should you decide to tuck something in your suitcase upon departure. You are free to bring whatever alcoholic beverages with you - unlike the other lines that depend on the 'booze packages' to top up their tills! Every palate is taken into account - from gourmet to buffet - the menus are fresh, innovative, varied and absolutely delicious. Evening menus featuring local cuisine, appropriate wines and attentive table service is spot on! For some reason, my wife and I expected an upper end IKEA atmosphere - instead, we got Neiman Marcus (on steroids). Each of Vikings ocean ships have their own unique venue within. In this case, it is an astrological domed theatre featuring well produced movies on space and the arctic experience. An intimate gathering with comfortable seating and about 6 projectors to generate a state of the art presentation. It is kept fairly cold so may want to bring a jacket - or the cashmere blanket from your stateroom! Every member of the staff from the Captain to the maintenance man looks you straight in the eye and says hello - and asks (sincerely) how your day is going. If a member of the staff is not working up to expectation - they seem to disappear for a day - then surface a day later with a broad smile, attitude adjustment and increased efficiency. They do not treat the passengers with an underlying distain that many cruise line staff seem to purvey. When asked "What's it like to work for Viking?" without fail, they are very complimentary about the personnel management policies, hours of work, perks and staff accommodation. The majority of the guides hired for the on-shore excursions are, educated, entertaining, enthusiastic, and experienced. Accents can be a bit of a challenge from time to time but Viking expects a report card at then end of the tour ensuring that the guide performed up to Viking expectations. Unfortunately the shipboard WiFi can be a little flakey if you are using your own laptop of cell phone. There is a bank of 6 hardwired computers on the main deck along with a printer should you happen to need one. In summation, we expected great - and got an 'over the top' experience. Viking deserves the accolades it receives from the various travel organizations. Would we spend this much again for a cruise? If it is with Viking, the answer is yes! Read Less

The ship was beautiful and there were a wealth of activities for us. We enjoyed all of the musical options available every day. The food in the restaurants was diverse and delicious. We tried all of the restaurants. One of my favorite places was the restaurant we would go to for breakfast, can’t remember name, but you could eat your breakfast outside on the deck and enjoy the beautiful views and warm weather. I tell my husband all the time “I’d go back on that ship tomorrow!” We met many interesting fellow passengers onboard. In fact, we have continued to meet up with travelers from our area. Overall, this was an amazing trip and I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks to all the Viking Orion staff for making this awesome trip possible. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed being on a Viking riverboat and wanted to try a larger, ocean going Viking ship. It was amazing. Not only was it absolutely beautiful but it seemed music was everywhere. The central area seemed to have musicians playing whenever we passed by, but there were great musical shows in the theatre as well. On board was an intimate planetarium with two movies literally surrounding the guests. We enjoyed all three pools, the infinity, the large indoor and the quiet spa pool, and found swimming was a great way to counter the absolutely wonderful food on Board. Every single dish we selected was delicious. We tried the Italian restaurant twice, and next time I will reserve it for even more nights. However, the brightly decorated Norwegian restaurant was the most fun, with limitless lax and other great entrees and desserts. As with the river cruise, we could go on free tours at every stop. We found them well-organized with excellent guides. Even at those ports we had been to in the past, the tours were so educational. We never felt rushed or crowded and were taken to unusual spots, like the most elegant wine-tasting in a noble’s manse. Our room was the nicest one we have ever had on a ship. It was a balcony room with more drawers that we could possibly fill up. But that was good to know, as we can’t wait to go on a longer trip and have made plans to go on the Viking’s Buenos Aires to Santiago cruise in Feb. 2020. Read Less

Had never been to most of the cities, had never cruised the Mediterranean or Adriatic. The brand new ship was marvelous in every way; great amenities, wonderful food, and friendly, helpful staff. Appreciated the changing menus, the locally sourced food items, and the variety of food offerings both in the main dining rooms and in the special restaurants. The on-board lectures and entertainment were top notch. The Port Talks were very helpful, as were the talks on European history. It was wonderful and special to have an astronomer on board and to hear his lectures as well. We appreciated the ship's small collection of books, the comfortable lounge areas, and the swimming pools, spa and gift shops. Given the itinerary, we were prepared for and wanted to experience a "tasting menu" of ports. Even so, a bit more time in some of the ports would have been welcome. This was particularly true in Venice, where it took an hour to get to the morning tour start point, then we had an hour tour, then an hour to get back to the ship, a fifteen minute break, and then an hour ride back to the afternoon tour start point. There must be a way to let morning tourers stay downtown and meet up at a major city location to start the afternoon tours. Except for one location (Naples), the tour guides were engaged, friendly and knowledgeable. The tour guide who took our group to and through the Venice airport was particularly helpful, since that airport is an overcrowded, confusing, disaster. Read Less

We initially chose the cruise because of the itinerary was to places we wanted to visit. We didn't realize until onboard this was the maiden voyage. There were a few hiccups and some things that needed tending to -- as in "we are waiting for the shower door seals to catch up to us." Our cabin was very spacious and there was plenty of room to store all of our clothes and such. The bathroom as well had lots of space and the shower was very roomy. The balcony was spacious and allowed us to sit comfortably at the table and not feel cramped. The only downside was the coffee maker. It was a Nespresso but did not come with the pods. Instead there was instant coffee and tea. That was not the probleml. The problem was there were no clear instructions on how to operate when you don't stick a pod in. I thought I was following the instructions, but sometimes I got hot water and other times not. I am hoping this has been corrected. Dining was terrific. I think we just managed to hit all of the options. It was nice to be waited on and then have the option for burgers, deli or the buffet. Dining al fresco was also nice. Afternoon tea, when onboard, was delightful. There were plenty of activities to keep us busy onboard. Entertainment was great and the places to listen to music were many. The total surprise was the planeterium on board. We went every opportunity we could. The onboard astronomers were very knowledgeable and they were more than willing to share their expertise. They even scheduled extra nights so they could point out new stars/planets in the sky. The "educational" speakers, too, knew their subjects and made what could be a dry subject very entertaining. We tried not to miss them. All of the personnel were friendly and anxious to help you out. Our cabin steward was amazing. Any request, no matter how small, and he was delighted to fulfill them. My daughter used the fitness center and we partook of the spa and other areas. My only complaint was the sauna/hot tub area closed too early. We would have used it more, but time constraints with other activities forced us to choose them over relaxing in the spa. There were lots of excursions, almost too many, I wanted to go on several of them. It was hard to choose. I traveled with my parents and my daughter and all of us agreed it was a great experience. We will definitely be on another Viking cruise in the near future. Read Less

We have to give great compliments to our main restaurant servers/attendants, Shendy, Hengky, Casper, Gorky, Zharko, Khadafi. I'm sorry, can't recall all, but these definitely stood out in service. The room service was also exceptional. Laundry room good, but needed staff to walk us through process as the signs were difficult to understand. The excursions were outstanding! The tours, guides were the best. We did get lost when my mother had to use the bathroom in Dubrovnik Walking Tour. Would have been nice if the guide waited as it was, I recall, a 4 hour tour, no bathroom break, just pointed to ladies room with long line ahead. Reason why we lost her. Also, cancellation of paid, not included tour policy is not acceptable for those that are unable to do, after previous day's tour. A lot of walking for my 87 year old mother that was too tired the following day to do the paid tour. Had to wait for refund, only if someone on waiting list. Luckily, one person was interested, therefore, we were refunded for the pricey tour excursion.Something that needs correction. All in all, we are going on another cruise in 2019, and 2020. Wouldn't do any other overseas cruise unless it's Viking! Read Less

It had the itinerary I was looking for. My wife always wanted to visit Rome and this cruise allowed for that. The size of the ship and the number of passengers was a big plus. I have been on other cruises that had several thousand people on board and that was too crowded. The fact that the age was restricted to keep small children away. Not having to fight for a spot in the pools or hot tubs was great. With the smaller number of passengers the service felt more personal. The crew was always ther waiting to help and not having to rush because they were keep so busy. The option of selecting where to eat and who to sit with made the dining experience more enjoyable. Not being told what table to sit at was great. Although a bit on the small size the cabin was comfortable and the veranda was a nice experience which I hadn't had before. Read Less
