We chose this particular Viking Vilhjalm Danube cruise because we were looking for a European river cruise that was beautiful, relaxing, and stopped at wonderful ports. Happily, that was our experience! Every member of the ship's staff was professional, friendly, and accommodating. Our suite was lovely and comfortable, although much of our time was spent on other areas of the ship talking with new friends and watching the scenery change. Off of the ship,Viking offered an extensive selection of excursions, and we wisely took advantage of a number of them. Of special interest to us was the emotional tour of Terezin on our Prague extension, and the fascinating Dohany Street Synagogue tour in Budapest. Other favorites included The delightful Wachau Valley Winery Tour and Tasting in Melk, and the authentic Mozart and Strauss Concert in Vienna. We both thoroughly loved this trip, and look forward to cruising and exploring with Viking again! Read Less

I have wanted to do a riverboat cruise for a while now and Budapest was always a place I wanted to revisit. The weather was perfect. The dining experiences on board was the biggest surprise for me, as I do not usually care for cruise food. To me it is usually very much like institution food. This cruise was different, everything seemed fresh and flavorful. The presentations were elegant. The atmosphere was conducive to meeting others easily. The physical set up of the boat allowed for relaxation and viewing the entire trip. It was nice to be able to view the shore (which was extremely close) and the villages from the water, even though we did not stop in all the villages. The staff was well spoken and attentive, always going out of their to get you what you want or help you in any way. I will return to this cruise line!! Money well spent. I also appreciated the free flight. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to see the cities in it. We had cruised the Rhone and Saone previously and enjoyed the cruise. This Danube cruise was GREAT and loved every minute of it. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. Food was wonderful and varied. The waiters learned our names and preferences almost immediately. Cabin was fine, although we couldn't use the balcony much because of the rain. Excursions were quite informative. The guides were knowledgeable in the various cities. The tour to Melk was a highlight. The church was amazing. We were pleasantly surprised with the tour of the Czech Republic. The cities were all very clean and the population were very friendly. We would take this cruise again, but will probably choose another cruise so we can see more of the world. All in all, this was the best cruise we have taken. Thanks Viking River Cruises. Read Less

The purpose of our cruise was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. This was our first Viking cruise and it fully met our expectations. The ship was comfortable and well designed to meet our needs. Our cabin was of first class hotel quality with a comfortable bed, excellent bath facilities, and a charming veranda. Dining was one of the high points of the cruise. Not only was the food excellent, but the staff went out of their way to make sure that the daily menus met our special dietary needs. Service was outstanding. For a week we felt almost like we being treated like royalty. The excursions were extremely well chosen and conducted by very knowledgable guides. Particularly memorable were the organ concert at Passau, the day trip to Pesky Krumlov, and the optional tours of Schoebrunn Palace in Vienna and the Jewish quarter in Budapest. While the cruise itself was all that we could have wished for, the same cannot be said for our air travel, particularly the flight from Los Angeles to Europe. Because Viking's booking agent neglected to inform American Airlines that our itinerary had been revised, we were informed at LAX, when we tried to check in, that we had no tickets. The result was an agonizing hour on the phone while our travel agent, a Viking agent, and American Airlines counter personnel struggled, ultimately successfully, to reissue our tickets so we could board our plane. Fantastic experience. First rate accommodations, amazing service, fun people, interesting excursions! The thing that I enjoyed most about this cruise was the fact that I didn't have to come up with plans everyday. That was prearranged and all I had to do was sit back and enjoy! I find the planning part of a trip very stressful and this kind of trip is absolutely stress free. We made nice friends who we enjoyed eating with every night. It was also a nice mix of busy and relaxed. Some of my best moments were just sitting on the deck with our friends and watching the incredible scenery go by. There is no question that I would choose Viking again for an international trip because they have really figured out how to make this a world class experience! If you have any doubts, put them at rest. This was perfect in every way. Read Less

This was our second Viking River Cruise - we were so pleased with the first one, we decided to do a second...and, are considering a third trip with Viking. Service is warm, friendly, professional & efficient. The staff are a joy to interact with - caring & conscientious. Cabin is spacious, comfortable & well-appointed. Balcony allows for a private area when you desire a bit of quiet time to read, write, chat etc. The food is well presented, varied, offers an opportunity to try regional specialties & most importantly, allows you to eat a very healthy, delichious diet, IF you choose too. Of course, you can be decadent, if that is your choice! Educational offerings & excellent guides provided real insight & enlightenment about the countries we were visiting. An enjoyable learning experience. We've taken advantage of going early & staying after the cruise both times - this added a lot to our overall satisfaction & enjoyment. Would definitely add the pre and post days every time. We've met lovely people both times - interesting, well-read, fun folks. The trips are a perfect combination of "just us" time and meet new friends opportunities. Bravo Viking - don't ever change! Read Less

This was my second Viking River cruise and they were both incredible! The first was The Heart of Germany during Christmas week and the second was The Danube Waltz during the summer. The service is spectacular and they really know how to make you feel special. I love the fact that EVERYTHING is included such as the air, airport pick up and drop off, excursions with local knowledgeable guides, beer & wine with lunch and dinner, water in the room, water on the excursions, umbrellas if needed, coffee & tea 24 hours a day, etc. The ships are small (around 180 passengers) so everyone gets to know one another and you make friends very quickly. The food is out of this world phenomenal and they even offer a complimentary tour of the kitchen one of the nights after dinner so you may see how everything works behind the scenes. There are no screaming kids, no smoky casinos, no drunk obnoxious people hanging out at the pool (there isn't one) but rather people who love to learn about other countries, their history and cultures. I took my 19 year old daughter on both river cruises, she absolutely loved it and we are in the process of planning our third. I won't cruise with any other line on a river except Viking. Read Less

My daughter and I chose the Danube Waltz river cruise on the Viking Wilhjalm because the dates coincided with our time off from work and the cruise included two cities - Budapest and Vienna - that we wanted to visit. From beginning to end every aspect of the cruise exceeded our expectations. Since Viking arranged our air travel one of their representatives greeted us at the Munich airport and escorted us to Passau, where our ship was docked. Upon arrival at the ship we were greeted warmly by the Hotel Manager (Julian) and the Maitre D' (Alex) who welcomed us aboard. Our cabin was not quite ready so we proceeded to the Upper Deck Lounge for a buffet lunch. By the time we had finished it our cabin was ready, and when we entered it we found our luggage in place along with two complimentary robe/slipper sets. Our cabin was on the main deck (water level) so it had a half-window, but we spent so little time there that we didn't feel deprived of scenery. The cabin was small but designed so efficiently that we never felt cramped. We showered, dressed, and slept there but spent most of our wake-time on board in the dining room, in the lounge, on the Aquavit Terrace, or on the upper deck. Dining options included both menu service and buffet service for breakfast and lunch and menu service for dinner. Food was plentiful and delicious, with a variety of offerings including typical American-style dishes as well as regional specialties and vegetarian dishes. Open seating for meals enabled us to meet and socialize with many other passengers. There was after-dinner entertainment scheduled each evening. Some programs were just for fun (for example, a Liars Club competition), and some had a cultural aspect (for example, a demonstration on how to make apple strudel and an anthology of Viennese music.) Before dinner each evening Joe, the Program Director, described the next day's shore excursions and gave us some insight into local customs and practices while offering suggestions for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. At each port of call there was at least one shore excursion and several optional excursions, all escorted by knowledgeable tour guides. There also was some free time for passengers to explore destinations on their own. We found our excursions to be enjoyable, informative, and well planned. I do wish we'd spent another day in Vienna, but I hope to return some day to see the sights we didn't have time to visit on this trip. We chose to spend an extra day in Budapest after the cruise was over. It was well worth it! I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the ship's personnel. Every crew member we encountered was professional and efficient but also warm and welcoming. For the duration of the cruise they truly made the ship a home away from home. We were sad to reach our journey's end and we look forward to someday taking another Viking cruise. Read Less

We were attending a wedding in Munich, Germany and decided to see more of Europe while we were there. We booked the Explorer Suite and had what we consider one of the most memorable and enjoyable trips of our lives. The ship was beautiful, service was exemplary, staff were extremely accommodating and friendly and the food was way above expectations. We spent an extra day in Budapest prior to boarding and enjoyed that decision. We took in sights that were not on the list of places to visit once we officially joined the cruise. Both our embarkation and our disembarkation went very smoothly. At the time of our disembarkation, we were concerned due to our early flight out of Munich for Seattle. Viking provided us with a private Mercedes touring bus at 4:00 a.m. to take us on the 2 hour drive to the Munich airport. We were amazed at how well we were taken care of throughout this entire Viking adventure. The scheduled day excursions were managed very well. The tour guides provided were knowledgeable and also very accommodating and they always left us plenty of time to explore on our own with very clear instructions on how to return to the ship and when. We never felt confused or unsafe. We purchased several onboard cruise certificates, as we are hoping to come back to Viking on an ocean cruise of the Mediterranean, especially Italy!! Read Less

Our cabin was very comfortable. Great bathroom shower Housekeeping did a wonderful job I loved sitting on the balcony when we weren't docked next to another ship The meals and desserts were excellent both in taste and variety. Breakfast, lunch and dinner could not have been better The staff could not have been more accommodating. Their service and care exceeded all expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the included excursions. The additional excursions were certainly worth the cost: The Mozart concert was delightful The thermal bath in Budapest was absolutely beyond fabulous and certainly an experience i will never forget. The nightly piano player was very enjoyable as was the other entertainment. My only disappointment was the Danube wasn't Blue Read Less

This trip was the ships first voyage. The service was excellent, and the staff extremely accommodating. The management team was there every step of the way providing visibility and support to their team. They were always available to talk and listen to comments both good and bad. There was never a request for any type of services or amenities that were not completed. The evening meal service in the main restaurant needs some fine tuning for bringing the meals out in a timely manner. The servers were always polite and went out of their way to fulfill any request we had. We dined on their terrace café for a majority of the evening meals. The menu was limited although staff was very accommodating in fulfilling any requests we asked for in food choices and beverages. The staff and food was outstanding for all the meals we had in this dining room. The servers were always polite and went out of their way to fulfill any request we had. The breads, pastries and desserts were excellent. I would recommend Viking River Cruises to anyone. Read Less
