We are previous river cruisers on a different line and relatives did this particular itinerary on Viking. Traveling with my husband and our two 20-something children, we had the trip of a lifetime. Highly recommend the Danube Waltz cruise. Starting in Passau and ending in Budapest is the way to go. Staff could NOT be more top notch and completely attentive to every need. They got to know us and we felt so welcome and cared for. If you go you must have dinner on the Aquavit Terrace, we were about the only people who did and I cant imagine why! The food was excellent and you could get the same meal as the main dining room, but the VIEW was so much better! We ate there every night. Pavel our server was unsurpassed. Food was tremendous and shore excursions truly enlightening. Arriving into Budapest at night with the Parliament building stunningly lit was an experience I will never forget. Read Less

We traveled as a group of eight family members, staying for a few days prior to the cruise in Budapest and ending our journey in Munich after the conclusion of the cruise. Our family enjoys traveling together and Viking makes that an easy experience for younger and older travelers - we ranged in age from 55 to 85. The Vilhjalm is a lovely ship, we thought the crew members were OUTSTANDING, from the tour director, to the room stewards, dining room attendants, and bartenders. The ship is modern, extremely clean with a welcoming decor. The amenities are very nice including an all day coffee and tea service, fresh baked goods in the morning and cookies in the afternoon. We had a veranda stateroom on the third level and enjoyed it very much. It is plenty of room, nicely appointed, very nice bathrooms, bedding and so forth. There is a laundry service available for an extra charge and it comes back very promptly and nearly gift wrapped. The ports of call on this trip were really wonderful - we truly loved Budapest, Durnstein, Bratislava, Vienna, Melk, and Passau. There is a very nice selection of shore excursions and we took part in one or more excursion per day. We've done one large cruise ship previously and then tried Viking in 2015 on the Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland cruise - which we loved - and we came back to Viking again in 2017 without hesitation and we were not disappointed. We plan to do a Viking cruise in France in 2019 and look forward to our next Viking journey! Read Less

Please beware that Viking does not get the premiere ports on cruises. As we cruised on the Danube we went by all the beautiful locations tomport in Passau, Germany & ended what I would call a “ghetto” port. Please look at the photo I have posted that shows our table with 2 glasses of champagne with our scenery of rusted out machinery and water tanks. This is not the type of image that you see on Masterpiece theatre. And to make it worse the Viking customer service people were not helpful. They had arranged for a couple of shuttles to take us to Passau maybe one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We ended up calling a taxi. I would not recommend Viking River Cruises. Ships are new and beautiful, but not having good customer service and getting the worst ports does not make Viking a desirable cruise line Read Less

We had read reviews and heard from friends what a great cruise experience this would be so we decided to book it as well. We were not disappointed. The crew were warm, professional and friendly, our cabin was typically small but very comfortable and the itinerary was very informative ports of call. The food was quite good but we had limited entree choices which was a bit disappointing. The soups each day were incredible! Breakfast buffets were very plentiful with an omelette station The public areas were spacious but since this time of year was rainy and chilly, we really couldn't relax on the upper deck too often. Entertainment was a bit lacking....we would have preferred someone telling us the history of each port each evening which would have been more interesting Tours were terrific in eat port....the optional wine tasting was one of the best ones We can't wait to take our next Viking river cruise!! Our Viking Cruise experience was phenomenal – everything from the amenities, staff, program, and food was perfect. The Danube Waltz was full of activities that we were looking for – interesting sites that encompassed both the historical aspect and today’s attractions. I should note that we were by far the youngest passengers on our cruise, my husband and I are both 31. Many of our fellow cruisers asked if we were happy being the youngest ones aboard and honestly, we felt right at home. I wish Viking would market to others our age who don’t have kids but want ease of educational travel and not a booze filled trip where you never leave the boat. We made many lasting friendships on the boat and enjoyed getting to meet so many people with similar interests. The size of our ship and the amount of passengers was perfect. There wasn’t a time when I felt like I was overwhelmed by the amount of people on the boat, and the excursions were parceled out to group sizes that were manageable to move around easily and efficiently. Our room was very comfortable and provided everything we needed. Viking should advertise that there is room under the bed to hold your luggage because I thought it was great bonus not to have to walk over my suitcase every time I entered the room. I also appreciated that there weren't any children running about. This was an adult only vacation and it was nice to not have to worry about children running around. I was particularly pleased with the lectures that were given including the Vienna Coffeehouse Culture, Viennese history, and cooking class. Our program director, Joe, did a great job at the Vienna Coffeehouse Culture lecture, and I really loved when we were sailing through the Watchu Valley and on our way into Budapest his site commentary that was broadcast to the top deck so we could determine what we were seeing. Joe really did great job and making the trip fun – especially the night he hosted the “Liar’s Club” game. I forced my husband to go and we were both a little apprehensive about what a cruise game would look like, but by the end we were in stitches laughing so hard. Everyone that night did a great job at making 184 people laugh and have a good time. We included the beverage package in our trip and it was a great addition. The selection and drinks provided were top notch, but that doesn’t even compare to the service. Since we had the package we frequented the bar at intervals throughout the trip and the bartenders were brilliant. Some of the best conversations we had were with Miro and Pavol, our bartenders. Miro was so knowledgeable of where we were going on the trip and would give us advice on where to go and what to do during our free time. He and all the others were so great and accommodating! Also the food was excellent. I still can’t stop thinking about the delicious bread and pastries. We didn’t add on any additional excursions but did all the provided ones. They were all great! I loved that the tours were more of an overview and then they allowed free time to go back and explore what interested you most. The only suggestion I would have is it allow more free time. There were a couple of times where we had to literally run in order to get back to the boat because we were so wrapped up in different areas we were exploring. However, all the tour guides were very knowledgeable and the programs were well thought-out and insightful. We will be going on another cruise and to quote my rather cynical husband, “this is the only time I’ve ever said this in my life, but I hope they don’t lower the price because then they would have to lower their standards. I hope they continue to have such great service and amenities because we will have to do another one or maybe since we started so young we can do them all before we die.” I couldn’t agree with him more. It was perfect! Read Less

My wife and I have cruised with Viking before and not only did we gave a great time, we were extremely impressed with Viking going above and beyond. And this cruise proved no different. The attention to detail, the customer service and all of the extras are truly amazing and certainly very much appreciated. On this cruise, one of our party is vegan. Every evening at dinner, the maitre d' would come by our table and plan, to the last detail, the next day's menu with her in order to accommodate her. The tours were all very good, enjoyable and informative. The headsets provided make all the difference in the world. There was no need to have to follow the tour guide closely so as not to miss what they're saying. The staff's dedication and enthusiasm are second to none. It was our friends' first river cruise and they were extremely pleased with everything. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was going to all the places we wanted to go. We had such a wonderful experience on our first cruise we decided to try another. The pre and post stays were in cities that we have always wanted to see. The shore excursions were also things we wanted to see and do. Let me begin with a very unpleasant beginning with the initial booking. When I initially booked the trip I told the Viking representative that this was a 50th anniversary celebration cruise. My wife and I were married in Italy in 1967 when I was assigned to the Italian Air Force. Our daughter was born in Italy in 1968. Upon booking I asked if it was possible to have a small cake and champagne on the cruise. The representation said congratulations and said they Viking would provide both at no charge. I thought that was extremely thoughtful and thanked her. During our initial booking I also scheduled a pre cruise in Prague and a post in Budapest. I was given the price and I said it was fine and booked it. As our cruise date grew closer I went online to check and make sure all was in order. At that time I noticed that our pre and post had not been booked. I immediately called Viking to see why. I was given no valid reason why and asked if I could still book a pre and post. I booked both and then asked about our cake and champagne at which time I was told there was no record for such a request and that I could get both at an extra cost to me. This was totally contrary to my initial conversation. After writing a steren mail to Viking I received a call from a Viking representative. She gave me the company line that such things could not be given to passengers as it would be too expensive for Viking. My response and subsequent conversation is a totally different subject. Things went fine with our pre in Prague. The Viking representatives were totally awesome. They met all our needs and requirements without hesitation. The cruise went as we expected with a huge exception from our first cruise. On our first cruise we had an extremely friendly wait staff at our meals. On this cruise we never did "connect" with the wait staff. They messed up meal orders on three occasions with little more than an apology. I will say this if it had not been for our Maitre 'd it would have been awful. The desk staff was exceptional as was Joe our Cruise Director. He was constantly making sure that everyone was in the right place at the right time. There was a major problem on our trip to Kunta Hora. As you know this is a very old city with very narrow streets. The city does not allow any tour busses in the old town. We parked about a mile away (that is what our tour guide told us), and had to walk. We had an elderly gentleman with a walker that was now expected to proceed with his walker for a mile or so over cobble stoned streets. At no time did any one from Viking offer any alternatives to this gentleman. My point with the above is that this tour and all tours should have been rated beforehand. This would allow people that are not physically able to do the tour could seek alternatives. Like I said in my title this was a good cruise not a great cruise. Based upon these experiences I will look at alternative companies for any future river cruises. Read Less

There were many things that made this cruise a great choice. There was very little daylight time spent on the water and when there was, the staff made it an event. Overall, having worked in customer service, project planning and operations, I recognized that this cruise was well planned in every detail. My sister and I very much enjoyed the larger cities. The unexpected delight was in the smaller towns. The entire dining staff accommodated my dietary restrictions. Special thanks to Alex, Elvin, and our chef on this. Our house keeper Janet was always friendly and incredibly effective. She realized I had allergies and provided me with extra tissues without my asking. The program director, Dan, was engaging and effective. We went on included, optional and our own tours. He gave us plenty of options for taking our own side trips. He also offered a new optional tour called Vienna Up Close which was excellent. All the guides were great and the Up Close guide was the cream of the crop. Thanks again to all the Viking Vilhjalm staff for a wonderful trip. Read Less

Had wonderful experiences meeting others, making new friends. Accommodations were top-notch; service was impeccable. The included excursions were thorough, safe, and enjoyable, even though our weather was a bit brisk for April! We loved coming back to the ship where refreshments and comfort awaited us. The optional excursions we took were well worth the money - we enjoyed the extra experiences and were made to feel comfortable during all the trips ashore. The ship was clean, kept at a good temperature; the housekeeping services were excellent. Servers at all levels were polite, courteous, helpful, always with smiling faces. We loved the itinerary that took us into Budapest at night - breathtaking! We hope to take another Viking cruise again, taking along some friends to enjoy the experience! Read Less

We had heard about this trip from others and was at the right time, right length, and right price. Food was fabulous and the crew members were outstanding. The room was spacious and we really enjoyed having the balcony that we could sit on. We did all of the standard included shore excursions and also did several of the optional ones. We especially enjoyed the biking side trip (with electronic bikes) that I understand was a new addition to the optional excursions. Also, all of the side trip guides were excellent and added unbelievable insight into the history and culture of their cities. I liked the fact that the ship held less than 200 people. This allowed all people to eat at one sitting and you could take your time in enjoy your meal and the fellowship with others. Also, we were able to get everyone of just 4 buses and then made the side trip very efficient. Read Less

This is my third Viking river cruise. It did not disappoint. Viking is attentive to all details. They are unfailingly polite. Service is excellent. Food was wonderful. The only thing they cannot do is control the weather! Food, shore excursions, nightly commentaries by the chef, updates by the cruise director, impeccably maintained rooms, piano music, entertainment brought on board were all so enjoyable. Some people had to disembark on the last day very early. Viking had a breakfast at 2 AM. Now tell me that is not CONSIDERATE. Viking did everything 100% right on this cruise. No complaints! The people work very hard and are very friendly and polite. The only negative is that very often the ship was against a wall or docked next to another boat so a balcony was really rather useless. I don't know if the third deck would have made a difference as I was on the second. There is a sundeck you can do laps on, but that is weather and wind permitting. Read Less

The showers were hot.The food was wonderful and delicious . The entertainment was wonderful. The ship is spotless . Any issues or questions were addressed . The tours are great for you had several levels of walking. The tour guides were all great and the most wonderful was the GIrl who did the Cesky kremlov was the greatest for she even gave her phone number, if we got lost or needed her. The ship never rocked and the crew kept us updated on all we needed to know. We got into Budapest late because of lock times and the next night the Captain took us back out after supper so we could sail back into Budapest in enjoy the spectacular lights of Budapest and it was fantastic for it was a holy day and all the church bells were ringing. It was spectacular as the fire works on the 4th of July! The crew on the boat were helpful and would do anything for you to make you comfortable and enjoy the trip. They could not have been nicer. My daughter is lactose intolerant and her food was great and she never ever got sick. Umbrellas were available if you needed them. We always had bottle water for tours. Bus Drivers were great. We met great and friendly people . People were polite on the trip. The cities were wonderful to see. Just sailing on the River was great . There was nothing to complain about. The man in charge of our side trips and other things told us we did not have change our euros for they would be accepted in the tourist area and he gave us the current conversion rates. I would love to go again. The next time I go it will be the Paris river cruise. My sleep was never ever disturbed. I loved it on the Danube for we had a suite. I loved the veranda and the view from the room. I loved up top of the boat and the special non slip flooring. I had no complaints and am saving my money for the Paris trip. I must say I am 70 and going on the boat to all these places was great for I did not have to go from hotel to hotel unpacking and packing . Eating my meals on the boat saved my daughter and me for getting sick . The meals on the boat corresponded to were we were and so did the entertainment. You can drink the water on the boat also. You did not miss anything by not eating in the towns for you had the cuisine and the local entertainment. Yes can't wait to go again. Oh yes they have people at the airport the help you get to the bus that goes to the boat when you arrive and when you leave they have people at the airport helping you get checked in. It is quite the organized procedure getting everyone to the airport in time for their flights -- staring breakfast in the wee hours . You never went hungry. Read Less

We chose this cruise for three reasons: first, my mom had always wanted to do a river cruise, second, the reviews for Viking were very good, and third, the itinerary was what we were looking for. We started in Prague with the 3 day extension and stayed at the Sheraton. The pick up at the airport was seamless, the concierge specific to Viking in our hotel was excellent. The tours in Prague were informative and our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. This was easily the best part of the whole experience. Embarkation was super easy, and our room was neat, clean and ready for us. So far so good. Our first meal was not so great. Three of the ten of us had tough grisly meat, my mom's was way over cooked. I'm not that picky about food, but it just wasn't great. Throughout the week, we sat at the same table every night. The server didn't even try to learn our names, didn't pull out our chairs for us (I would have especially expected this for my 80 year old mother), never refilled my water glass without being asked, and just generally didn't anticipate our needs. All week long the food was just ok; I would have expected better for the ratings the ship received and for there only being around 170 passengers. Also, the deserts were not even worth ordering and if you like fresh fruit or good salads, good luck. Also, once it was nine or so, there was no food to be found anywhere on the boat. You had to learn quickly to take something back to your cabin if you wanted any evening snacks. Speaking of the cabins, The beds, linens, pillows, showers and TV were great. The service was just so-so. The first night the AC wasn't working and we only had heavy feather comforters. I requested a sheet which they brought the next day but didn't bother to put it on the bed. Also, we were out of TP in our cabin for 2 days-certainly something the room steward should have been attentive to without having to request it. One day I had a migraine so I stayed in bed until noon. When I left, I directly asked the steward to go ahead and make up our room. She said ok but when we returned around 5, nothing had been done. To me, these kind of things just are not first class. Also, the first 2 nights there was a sewer smell. Entertainment. The staff brought on some fun entertainment that featured local dancers, singers and opera singers; all were well presented and very good. However, on the other nights, there was nothing. I mean, set up some card or board games, bridge, rummy, etc. Have a Bingo night, have a karaoke night, etc. I'm not looking for Vegas style shows, just something fun to do for the crowd that is under 60 and doesn't go to bed by 9. Ports and shore excursions: We spent a lot of time on buses and listening to very knowledgable tour guides tell us the history of buildings and pointing out various sights. I did like the headsets. They worked great and made it easy to hear and follow the guides. Without exception, every one of our guides on the included excursions was outstanding in their knowledge, seemed to love what they were doing, shared their feelings openly about living under a communist regime, answered questions, and understood how to lead a group. If you love history, you will really appreciate the guides. However, if you want anything more than just looking at the outside of a building, you really need to buy the special excursion packages. We bought the night in the countryside with dinner and folk dancing. I'd give it about a B- There were a lot of people packed into a small space with room for only 5 or 6 of the guests to participate in the dancing. Kind of reminded me of something you would see at Disney. We really loved the ports we visited-Passau to Budapest. We were traveling with 3 siblings and their spouses, all in our 50's, our mom and her sister-80 and 82, and one friend with her mother-same ages. I am not sure if I would go again or not. If you are flying all the way over the pond anyway, my advice would be to be sure and do the 3 day pre-cruise in Prague. We felt that 2 days in Budapest was enough so instead of doing the post cruise tour, we booked our own return and visited London for 3 days. One more thing, my mom and her sister stayed in Budapest for the 3 day post tour. They said their flights home (provided by Viking) were terrible. With travel time and layovers it took them almost 20 hours to get home to Orlando. I think Viking might just look for the cheapest seats, but when a lot of the clientelle is older, maybe they should pay a little more attention to the itinerary. Read Less

Viking Danube River cruise on the longship Vilhjalm was wonderful in every way. The ship, as are all Viking Longships, is so beautiful, one feels one is in heaven all the time on board and on excursions. The itinerary was spectacular, with a mix of large cities and small medieval towns. The day trip to Cesky Krumlov, the Melk Abbey, and sailing into Budapest in the evening seeing all the lights and architecture were the highlights. Yet, enjoying lunch on the Aquavit terrace with a glass of wine while viewing the beautiful Danube, its villages and its vineyards, is heaven on earth....doesn't get any better than this. The public areas of the ship are simply gorgeous and so pleasant. We enjoyed the nightly entertainment, which is small in scale but always fun and distinctive. We also appreciate the ability to spend good amounts of time in specific ports, and the ability to return to ship on our own on occasion. Viking does need to do a little work on air flight arrangements at departure. Making people leave the boat as early as 3 AM is bad business practice. Read Less

My wife has always wanted to visit Austria. So we talked and decided that the best way to get a feel for Austrian and Eastern European culture and scenery was to take a river cruise, which we have never done before. We were joined by my wife's sisters and their husbands and another couple who we love to travel with who are very good friends. Our cabin was very comfortable and we had plenty of room to store all our stuff for an 8 day cruise. although we did not spend much time there it was spacious and we were able to see our sailing adventure as we traveled out our sliding glass door. We enjoyed many daily off boat excursions that were guided by local people who were very informative and friendly. We also had plenty of time on shore to explore on our own after getting our barrings from the walking tours. The cities and scenery on the Blue Danube were beautiful. We really got a flavor of the true culture of every port we visited. The service was awesome. The crew and the staff were so friendly and informative. The meals were five star. The local wine, beer and beverages were a taste from each region we visited. we were also entertained by local actors and musicians who gave us a taste of the regional dance, song and theatrical theme. The ports we visited were so beautiful. The churches, the hills, the homes and every scene we saw was better than the last. The history was especially exciting for me as we traveled through time back to many many years before the US was even a country to current Eastern European culture. I especially liked Budapest at night. The Abbey at Melk. And Chesky Romanov in the Check Republic which was a shirt bus ride from our boat. It was ancient and beautiful. We are looking forward to traveling with Viking again soon. Our next adventure may be a river cruise on the Rhine River. Try it you'll like it. And you will be Groovin down a river with a smile on your face. Read Less

The tour guides for the daily walking tours were knowledgeable, friendly, funny and very proficient in English. We particularly like the stories told by the guides old enough to remember life behind the Iron Curtain. The scenery along the Danube is breathtaking, particularly in Austria's Wachau Valley and the night-time entry into Budapest. The on-board crew was phenomenal -- very personable, warm and helpful. A river cruise is so different from a large ocean cruise where you feel anonymous. We feel like we got to know our crew and vice versa. We chose the Danube Waltz and added a pre-extension to Prague, then stayed at the end on our own for another night in Budapest. We were able to visit five countries, which gave us a great overview of that part of eastern Europe. I can't say enough about this cruise. It exceeded my expectations in every way. We stayed in the smallest room on the bottom floor, because that was all that was available. It turned out to be just perfect, as we spent most of our time in the lounge or outside on the deck. The food was amazing! So fresh and delicious. The special dinners were really fun with such great attention to detail. The best part was the professional, fun and competent staff. They made the experience the best possible. I will definitely do another Viking cruise! Read Less

Every stop, every tour, every hiking experience on our own was fun and interesting. I walked 10 miles every day, not just a sitting around cruise. (but it could be if you want that). Food was outstanding, Service way beyond expectations, laid back, no rules or herding us around like cattle. Loved the ancient town of Chesky Komrov, like discovering a beautiful midevil town untouched by WWII. Octoberfest food and entertainment was outstanding. Dining - outstanding, we would sit with our friends and make new ones, small groups ok, beautiful views out the floor to ceiling windows. Sail away from Budapest at night, totally spectacular. We had to go to the front desk or dining room to get all our info about what to do. I liked that a lot better than announcements over the PA system. It was very quiet and elegant on board. The crew knew our names the first day, and welcomed us back on board by name and with a welcome drink and cool towel only a few hours after we had boarded. Staterooms had very comfortable beds and were very clean and well-decorated. The ship is a lot better looking on the inside than the outside, and very quiet. Don't mind motion, but never felt any motion, had to open the curtains to see if we were moving. Our first cruise on the Danube exceeded our expectations in every way. Very sad when it ended. The tour guides are incredibly well trained and knowledgeable, and the little radio and ear buds made it seem very personal so we didn't have to gather around the speaker. My wife and I have been traveling to Europe on land trips with family members for many years, sometimes with as many as 12 people. Of late, we have started to use the ship option, having cruised the Greek Islands, Amalfi Coast, and the Adriatic (Croatia, etc.). This time we decided to try the river based version. I was very pleased. River cruising is much more focused on the exploration of the cities and sights, rather than shipboard activities. If you have never done a river cruise, be aware, it is fundamentally different from ocean based travel, even with respect to the boutique cruises on Azamara or Seabourn. The river boats are smaller (190 passengers in our case) and there are no casinos, circus acts, and a half dozen restaurants. Instead, it is a very comfortable experience; you have the same few wait-staff every day that know your name snd learn you preferences. They start offering you food and drinks often before you ask. Everyone is friendly, and you have the chance to mingle with other guests in the large dining area. The menu consists of some excellent everyday choices and a separate section that has a series of new daily specials. The food is excellent; there are appetizers, main courses and desserts that you can mix and match - no judgement - although we all overindulged a bit. The excursions and airport transportation are run with precision. We were immediately met by a Viking representative upon arrival at the luggage carousel at the airport who brought us to the Viking bus. The land tours, whether walking or via bus, were all arranged ahead of time - one merely goes to the desk, picks up the day's information and group assignment, and is met by the guide. The boat provides small radios that are synced to your guide - these are very helpful in that you can always hear what's going on without having to be on top of the tour person. On the last day, the crew arrange everything for the return to the airport, including meeting you and helping with luggage, and all the way to the correct counter for your flight. I have traveled a lot - both for work and fun - and this was a very nice experience. We expect we will do this again, hopefully soon. As a final note - the staff are the best I've encountered - they are what make the trip memorable almost as much as the historical cities. Read Less

We have already travelled the Rhine and the Moselle so decided to try another river the Danube trip with Viking was superb cabins, dining service all excellent very busy with trips because there are so many sights to see. Our only complaint was the lack of entertainment the other cruises we have done had better evening entertainment but we enjoyed the rest of the trip would go with Viking again but on a different trip of course our favourite river is the Moselle so pretty but understand the American passengers had travelled a very long way and it is all about the history in the bigger ports. Budapest was my favourite stop it is a lovely city so many great sights and so much history we also found Bratislava charming. I would recommend Viking to anyone if you want top class ships and top class service keep up the good work. Just one point I would have been a bit upset if I had paid extra for a balcony because at most ports we moored along side another ship so feel you were limited to the use of your balcony so feel that the quite large sum charged for different cabins is not a good selling point. I had been wanting to try river cruising for some time. Viking got good ratings, the Danube had the greatest appeal, and friends raved about a similar cruise to see the Christmas markets. It was a good choice. The crew was amazing. It could be 11:00 at night or 3:30 in the morning, but they were always upbeat and happy to assist in any way they could. The highlight for me was the 10 p.m. entrance into Budapest. They tried to prepare us, but it was even more magical than I imagined. I was also struck by the design of the ship. Viking clearly communicated to the architect the feedback from their passengers on what works, what doesn't, and what they'd like to see. Besides having a typical Scandinavian look, everything about the design worked. We had been told that in busy ports we might have to "double park." This was true, but it was so easy to walk across a sister ship that you almost didn't notice that you were stepping from one ship to another. I also appreciated that, in every case where we were double parked, sometime during our stay, the crews rotated the ships so that each ship got to be moored on the riverside for several hours. We arrived in Budapest two days before departing on our Viking cruise. With the help of a Viking representative in our hotel, the Marriott, my friend and I were able to use the Big Bus to get off and on at locations that we knew we would not see on the first day or second day of our guided cruise tour. We discovered numerous small cafes to leisurely enjoy the food for a meal, coffee, and / or a snack. Don't miss going to the Hospital in the Cave on the Buda side of the Danube. We were able to board our cruise ship, the Wilhelm, with no trouble, being greeted by several of the crew members. who, by the way, remembered our names starting right then and for the rest of the cruise. Our cabin had a balcony, on which we had our pastries and cappuccino each morning. The room was an adequate size considering how little time we spent there. I have been on Ocean and Sea cruises where the number of passengers seemed overwhelming. On the Viking River Cruise, the small number of passengers (171) meant that one could at least recognize almost everyone on our ship. Stopping to take photos when on guided tours sometimes separated us from our group. However, being able to recognize a familiar face, quickly got us back on track. It was also easy to make conversation with others with whom you sat relaxing or at a meal because they were recognizable. I also loved the idea of taking a trip without children who were crying, complaining, or lost. I truly enjoyed being "the child" as I experienced the wonders of the sites, the food, the locals, and the culture of the countries we visited. We loved the variety of foods served both in the dining room and in the Aquavit. The dress for each was fairly as dressy or causal as one felt like being. The chef was on hand for all meals - I especially liked being shown the kitchen on a tour he gave. The chef also guided a group to the market one day for a shopping and tasting tour. Great fun :) Each of the ports offered a variety of activities on land - either guided tours or time to spend on your own exploring. The ship's staff were involved in some of the tours, and if someone decided not to get off for either of these, the remaining staff saw to ones needs / wishes with food, discussions. There were also demonstrations on board as well as cultural entertainment in the evening after dinner. The singing, dancing, and music were examples of what the country we were visiting offered as their traditions. The audience - us - was encouraged to join in. The staff dressed in traditional German attire one afternoon and evening, much to the delight of us all :) The activities included tours that were included as part of our package as well as a number of extra ones. This included a night at the opera in Vienna - the singers and orchestra were outstanding and was another "must see". Our tour guides offered a regular and a slower pace groupings - which was a great advantage to many of us. The staff members were friends while they performed their duties - calling us by name, remembering what we liked to drink, our menu preferences, reminding some of us of our departure times (I'm always late), greeting us everywhere on the ship with a smile and questions about our day. They also took photos for us - I hate doing selfies :) I hated to say good-bye, and I hope to see some of them again on another Viking River Cruise. Read Less
