Was excited to travel on this new cruise ship. As usual, great service. But there are some issues. Indochine is a worthless restaurant and not worth the time. Atlantine is wonderful and the best of all options, although one night we were turned away because no tables available for a group of 6--even if we were willing to split up. None of the restaurants that charge more are worth it. La Dame is good and so is Keiseki but we opted out since they certainly weren't worth the extra cost. Best choice is Keiseki for lunch. Incredible sushi. Love breakfast at La Terraza and dinner there is pretty good. The Grill for dinner is predictable, but given weather was an issue (cold) so not a good option. Rooms are great. Butlers were very helpful. Tours in ports were mediocre to poor. But the ports themselves were kind of boring. Loved the Falkland Islands but arranged our own tour which was the same as the cruise tour and $100 cheaper per person (plus it was only for us--no bus!). Entertainment was incredible. The singers are wonderful. The lectures were also great. Worth attending. Cruise director was fun. So on board experience was good. Fitness center is too small and needs more bikes! Read Less

The Muse is a beautiful new ship and it will not disappoint your expectations. But, near the last minute, SilverSea pulled one of the prized destinations in favor of another day at sea. Many of our fellow passengers referred to that as a "SilverSea bait and switch." We agreed with that and there was never an explanation as to why they pulled that. The food was generally better than we have experienced on other high-end cruises but the kitchen cannot seem to get the meat temperature even close to what you ordered. On our first night in LaDame two of the three that ordered a meat dish rare to medium rare got medium well to well done entrees. The next night at Atlantide we had six orders of beef or lamb for rare to medium rare and three of us got plates with medium well to well done meat. That frustration with that fundamental kitchen mistake continued throughout the cruise. They really need to fix that problem. Our butler was well meaning but not very hospitable - especially toward my wife and the wife of a neighboring suite that he took care of as well. However, two couples we were also traveling with on Deck 5 had an exceptional butler. The Cigar club on Deck 8 was a marvelous place to enjoy a cigar and fine scotches. The biggest disappointment (beyond the bait and switch) were the excursions. They were widely considered awful and awfully expensive. Of course, there were a couple exceptions to that general rule. If I were ever tempted to do that cruise again (and i never will be so tempted), I would book private excursions. Read Less

My wife and I wanted to see Chile and Argentina. We had actually previously scheduled a trip on another cruise line a few years ago but a serious illness of a family member caused us to cancel. Subsequently, several friends recommended SilverSea. They are absolutely correct. The Silver Muse is as good as it gets. Our cabin [suite] was beautiful, very good size, had a walk in closet, a great bathroom with a stall shower and soaking tub. There are two TVs built into large mirrors, a nice sitting area and a large veranda. Service was outstanding with an excellent Butler and an excellent maid. Dining is great with nine restaurants, most of which were superb. My only complaint is why there is an extra fee for two of them when those two are no better than the others. Liquors and wines were uniformly excellent. Bar service again excellent. In Dolce Vita, Anwar, a server was amazing. The pool area is fine and very comfortable. Night entertainment is quite good. I do think the lectures should be more oriented to the ports and what is notable about them. Our only negative is that sometimes leaving the ship for a tour was total chaos. Most excursions were fun and quite good. The exceptions being horrendous food service in Coyhaique City and initially in the hotel in Santiago. Our additional complaint is the Check In at the Park Tower in Buenos Aires. In every other way the hotel is fine though it could use some renovation. Read Less

We had a previous experience on SilverSea which was delightful and we wanted to try them again. SS did not disappoint us as the dining, entertainment, staff were all first rate. The shipboard services are excellent from butler to laundry availability. The shore excursions on this trip were somewhat limited by the ports of call (only 2 ports). The ones we were chose were very good except the Andes Highlights - very interesting scenery up to a mountain village for a brief tour and lunch. The guide was excellent with much historical and geological information that made the long drive interesting. The village itself was not very attractive but surrounded by magnificent mountains. A total of 9 hours was a bit long but not sure how it could have been changed. The other excursion was from Paracas and toured the Ballesta Isles which was very interesting. The guide was well versed in the local history and the animals that we saw. The entertainment was varied and for the most part very good. All skilled performers from musical to dance to guitar. We particularly enjoy the diverse group of passengers on SS cruises. The people come from many countries including the UK, Australia, Europe(Germany, France, & Italy), Asia and the USA. Very interesting and personal group of mostly well traveled people. Read Less

Wonderful ship, impeccable service, great food. Silversea has outdone itself with the Silver Muse. Every luxury anticipated and offered. Most important, the crew was first rate and catered to every interest and whim. Silversea never says “no” to any reasonable request. The ambiance onboard was just about perfect and the cuisine especially great with so many new and varied dining opportunities. Our cabin was spacious and in excellent taste. The many different venues onboard catered to just about every interest. And the diversity of restaurants and cuisines made choosing a daily dining experience challenging but in the end rewarding. The only blemish on an otherwise great experience was the absence of truly memorable shore excursions, with the great exception of front row seats at Carnival! However, ever South American cruise line suffers the same fate as there are too few noteworthy ports and thus too few good shore excursions. Can’t change geography or culture to suit cruising tourists! Read Less

We chose this cruise when it was shortened from 18 to 12 days, ending in Lima rather than Valparaiso, which became an optional 5 day extension. We knew that there would be 5 days at sea, and assumed that those days would essentially be like staying at a 5 star hotel, and they were in some ways. There were 4 ports of call, but we will return to this. The cabin was beautifully appointed as was the entire ship. One could dine in any of the 6 restaurants, with 2 having a surcharge. All but one were excellent and commensurate with a ship of this caliber, with the exception of La Terraza, which served breakfast and lunch, but became an Italian venue for dinner - clearly inferior on all levels, with poor timing (forever) and average food. As for entertainment and activities, fair at best - clearly subpar. On prior voyages with Silversea, there were activities on the deck - pilates, yoga, etc. Here they were relegated to an interior stretching room and limited to 8, which filled immediately. Lectures were in a dark theater at 3 pm rather than in the Panorama lounge, a large space that could accommodate large numbers, with windows as well as a darker corner for slides. Earlier cruises had one night of Dinner Under The Stars, a wonderful buffet on deck - not here. I think that you get the message. The main pool deck even lacked background music - there was one afternoon with live music as background . As mentioned the service was excellent. Last but not least, the ports were fair. Cozumel, where we arrived on a Friday, along with four five thousand person boats. A tour that we bought from the cruise line was SO horrible that the cruise line refunded the cost of the 12 hour debacle. The other ports were fine.................clearly more thought and vetting needs to be done with the subcontractors.................so that's it. I certainly will research the passenger population as well as the ports for the next voyage. I hope that the "kinks" will be ironed out, as the line becomes more familiar with the ship............. This was our first cruise for many years and we went with good friends. It was generally enjoyable but certainly not outstanding. The cabins were comfortable and the staff well trained and invariably pleasant and helpful. There are many restaurants on the Silver Muse. Food is fresh and plentiful but not particularly exciting and at La Dame, where passengers have to pay extra to dine, I could discern no appreciable improvement in the standard of cooking. However, the pizzas were good, but the ice cream disappointing. The pasta ( it's an Italian ship) was quite good but, again, not exceptional. Generally , the desserts ( and I love dessert) were fairly generic - looked beautiful but did not taste as good as they looked. To my delight, but a sad comment on the quality of the food, I did not put on an ounce during this trip. Cocktails were good and wine was plentiful, but not what I would describe as premium. We had a very ordinary red from the special wine list ( charged extra). At sea days were spent in various activities. I was annoyed that the Spanish lessons and Bridge lessons were on at the same time. Lectures from guest lecturers were generally of a good standard, relevant and interesting. The shows mostly began at 10pm which was a bit late for us and those we did go to were not impressive. The shore excursions were marred by guides who generally did not know their subjects in any depth and whose limited English made it difficult for them to make the most of interesting sites. The description of the excursions did not match the reality - for example, on one, we were told we would see how tequila was made and visit a chocolate factory - we were , in fact, taken to sales venues and given a short talk about the production of tequila and chocolate and then encouraged to purchase these items. On other excursions, more detail would have been a welcome aid to decision making about whether to go or not. We hired a car, driver and guide in Lima and this was a terrific excursion. The guide was well informed and helpful and was able to show us most of the sights we had nominated as interesting and found a local restaurant for lunch where we were able to sample typical local dishes - the food was interesting, tasty and inexpensive - and the guide had lunch with us and chatted throughout, giving us a snapshot of life in Lima and the surrounds. I would definitely organize a private tour again in preference to going on organized excursions. The experience was not bad enough for us not to consider travelling with Silversea again, but our expectations will be more in line with reality next time, and we will have learned from experience how to maximise our enjoyment of the holiday. Cruise from Fort Lauderdale through Panama Canal and down to Santiago, Chile. Great travelling through Panama Canal for first time. Friendly efficient crew. Service always fast and courteous. Good food with wide range of restaurants, some require booking, others open seating. Menus changed after about a week. Some dishes indicative of areas we visited. We went to La Dame (signature restaurant) extra US$60 each - excellent, but once was enough. We had no trouble regarding attire for dinner, but heard some guests had been sent back to get jackets. Cabin spacious (1010 Silver suite), well presented and maintained. Evening Shows (singers, dancers) were at 10 pm at start of cruise. When offered at 6:15 much better attendance. Daily Chronicles arrived about 6pm at night detailing activities for next day. Not much to do on "At Sea" days. In addition to guest lecture (1 or 2) there were small groups to learn bridge or Spanish. TV's around decks showed position of all Silversea vessels. Would have liked to have more details of our vessels progress - more detailed map with current position, weather, distances to next port etc. Ports - mostly commercial so need shuttle to port entrance and not enough visited on this cruise (long distances). Excursions - all extra charge and not much offered. This may be partly due to it being developing countries. Cozumel -drive around island. Belize - Laminai Temple with Mayan ruins worth doing but involved over an hour each way in open top motor boats. Roatan Island - good snorkelling, but beach (Big French Key) was pretty basic - set up for daily visitors - beach lounges and lunch. Manta, Ecuador - visit to Wildlife Park was basic. Many tours seemed geared to sell local products. Lima - hired private car for all day excursion - this was worth while as visited sites we wanted. In Arica, northern Chile we just wandered around town, museum, pleasant visit. Disembarked at Valparaiso and did tour to Casablanca Valley wineries before drop off at airport about 4pm. For those who are familiar with Silversea and are wondering about the new ship, I will review a few details, mostly good, some not so much, in the latter part (skip the first paragraph), but I would like to start by making one thing clear ... Read More
For those who are familiar with Silversea and are wondering about the new ship, I will review a few details, mostly good, some not so much, in the latter part (skip the first paragraph), but I would like to start by making one thing clear for the uninitiated: by far the main reason one chooses this line and pays a significant multiple of the regular cruise line prices is the clientele. It can cut both ways, depending on one's preference, so I will try to explain for those who might be wondering what they would be paying extra for and what the experience might look like without passing any judgment whether this is the right place for you. For client selection, the steep price is coupled with a very conservative dress code - there are very few "casual" days (and even that does not mean shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, etc), and "informal" means jacket for gents that is required on most days, plus 2-3 formals (tux or business suit) per 10-15 days. Even on informal days many passengers wore suits and ties... The company actually had to reverse an initial more casual policy because of customer demand (https://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=8009). Both factors yield not only a well-heeled, but also a rather sophisticated international crowd. It is like a club of old money plus newly minted members who can fit in on multiple criteria besides money. Let me share two overheard conversations to illustrate. "Our daughter came out and married young..." If you are wondering whether this refers to the person being gay, you are mistaken. The reference is to a debutante, and if you don't know what it means, maybe this is not a place for you. The other example was a story by an amazed physician whose hedge fund manager patient showed him how he can change the illumination color on top of a NY skyscraper visible from his penthouse with his cell phone, because he owned the building. Getting the drift? A Boston Brahmin would be a typical guest. The wardrobes, watches and jewelry just reinforced the obvious, and quite frankly surprised us a bit - we usually do not bring tens of thousands of dollars worth of stuff to the ship, especially because typically we have a land portion before/after the sailing - kind of silly to haul it to Machu Picchu! This might not be everyone's cup of tea (no extended pinky if you are consuming it!), but we had a very good feeling, because despite the obvious wealth, people did not seem overtly pretentious, were certainly not intrusive, and maybe the dress policy weeded out potentially annoying nouveau riche (?). We do not socialize a lot on cruises, but all guest interactions were polite, pleasant and sometimes even interesting. OK, call me elitist, guilty as charged! Now more tangible characteristics starting with those that truly distinguish Silversea. The most extraordinary experience is the butler service. Our butler Rahul not only fulfilled every request in the most professional manner, but he anticipated certain needs and proactively addressed them. No wonder, because the butlers on Silversea are trained in the same school whose alumni work at the Buckingham Palace, and I believe that the Head Butler actually did work there. There are other nice service touches, such as a pool guy coming by and cleaning glasses (as in sunglasses and reading glasses). A rather amazing experience was acupuncture by Shiroto-sensei in the spa. Quite "simple": she ameliorated long-standing health problems for both of us, and we also saw a written testimonial by a customer that verges on a medical miracle! It is hard to overestimate how big of a difference such an individual can make for the trip as a whole. Overall, the food was quite good with a great variety and IMHO it surpasses our previous cruise experiences incl. Silversea. It is probably impossible to create a Michelin-level dining on a ship, but most of the restaurants are just a notch below with the emphasis on excellent ingredients and fresh preparation. La Terazza is probably the best choice, as it serves a classic Italian repertoire (being an Italian company probably helps) without any compromise, and it is more spacious with better views than all the restaurants on Deck 4. For atmosphere, Silver Note with a fantastic music duo is the best, but the food is kind of lackluster there - limited selection with some real flops, like the crudo sampler that was, well kind of a joke (miniscule portions, I'd say sub-gram range, of fish crumbs placed in tiny wells that seem to be more geared towards escargot, and then half of the wells essentially empty with a few specks of the same spice...?). Our best routine then evolved into a dinner in La Terazza, followed by a few steps to the bar seating in Silver Note at 9am to enjoy the music. Atlantide is very solid (meat/steaks are quite good), the Indochine is OK, while I would not recommend the Kaiseki if you know the real Japanese food. Did not try La Dame, if I want a really haute cuisine, I'd go to Jean Georges. At the pool deck, Spaccanapoli has the best true Italian pizza, and I'd do the Grill for dinner once max. The selection of complimentary wines is quite good and satisfies even a discerning oenophile, while the cocktails are expertly made with premium spirits. OK, now some question marks and complaints. The first one is very subjective and has to do with the ship's interior design. It is all "man-made" materials, fake plastic wood, faux leather, etc., which did not appeal to us. The hotel director explained that these are the new ship building safety codes (everything must be fire resistant). I don't know, but some of the other ships that we have sailed in the past seem to have more natural materials, or at least they were better fakes. Did not care much about the art, either. If confused or in doubt, go to Sotheby's and get yourself a few 17th century maybe not so famous Dutch guys, and/or lesser known Impressionists for $20-50K a piece. Finally, the "atrium" is an architectural miss. I understand that one cannot have a typical soaring atrium of the big ship variety, but here is an idea: staircase made of transparent material...!? It's a quirky side-bar, but I could not resist mentioning it (see attached photo): the hallway carpets have a dizzying pattern that seems designed to induce/enhance sea-sickness? The biggest weakness was the land concierge. They were essentially focused only on packaged excursions, which we generally abhor and rarely take. I thought that aggressive excursion peddling is a sole MO of cheap cruise lines...? Even the "lectures" on ports of call were 100% regurgitation of the excursions - what a waste! On our previous cruise there were tons of useful port information and a knowledgeable concierge (in some cases even dedicated local ones for specific ports) with all sorts of hints. Here close to zero, to the level of embarrassment. Our first two ports of call were Cozumel and Belize, where probably the #1 activity one can think of would be scuba diving. We were told that that there were no excursions with scuba diving, because they always had to cancel them in the past due to a lack of interest, and that there were only snorkeling trips. OK, we hate excursions anyway, although in our experience almost every boat going out can, and in many cases does combine scuba diving and snorkeling. More importantly, why can't the concierge just book us with a scuba shop? Instead, after 3 visits to the desk, I finally got a list of scuba shops from the internet in Cozumel for me to check. Excuse me, I can google myself...! Then upon my insistence, they tried to book something, but neither of these shops had the right start time (either too early or too late). It also turned out that these shops were quite far from the dock (nobody had a clue about the layout of the port, distances, etc.). When we disembarked, just outside the port entrance, there was one scuba shop after another, I simply walked in and in 30min I was on a boat heading to a reef... Wouldn't a concierge actually know this by just visiting the port once, let alone do some research or have a local contact? To add insult to injury, when we actually did book an official excursion (diving with sharks in Honduras), one of the staff had no idea what was required (like filling out a card with equipment needs, etc.). To be fair, most of the negative experience was with one staff member and another one was much better. Besides the brilliant experience with Shiroto-sensei with acupuncture described above, the spa has glitches, some of which could easily be avoided. Very often the front desk is empty, which is explained with a sign noting that all personnel are busy with clients. Besides the inconvenience of not being able to schedule anything, the real problem is that one can get keys to the gym lockers only at the front desk... Furthermore, most people book treatments on sea days. When I was booking and asked for appointments on sea days, the lady did not know when the sea days were, and it took her 5min to find out!? I also think that the gym size, and even worse for the sauna (max 2 people with one shower???), are not adequate for 500 passengers. Entertainment is OK, but uneven. The piano players Natasa and Milan and the duo in Silver Note are world-class, as was the Uruguayan guitar player in the main theatre, but others not so much. One can understand that a mid-size ship cannot mount a big production, but recruiting more solo top artists should be in the realm of possibility. All in all, I see that I have assembled a long kvetching list, which reflects my desire to point out things that can be fixed (does Silversea read these reviews? They asked me to fill this out, so hopefully yes). However, overall this is a memorable experience and I would recommend Silversea to anyone who is interested in this type of a cruise. Read Less

Its impossible, in a few words, to describe just how bad this cruise was! The way the restaurants were run, the quality of food and service, was just disgusting. I have sailed with Silversea's over a 100 days, but never, never again. I firmly believe this company has now set its sights onto a totally undiscerning client, who will accept a much lower standard. Of the passengers I spoke to, not one disagreed with my complaints. This review site gives you tips on the subjects to write about, so I will rate out of 5, each one: Ship) 2 - No atmosphere at all, and badly laid out. The main bar was too big and lacked atmosphere. Its was Xmas, but the entire room had just one small Xmas tree, no other decorations. The service of canapes was virtually non existent and when they did arrive, usually very few left on the tray. Much less staff than you used to get. Non of the staff, including management, or indeed the Captain, had a smile on their faces. They walked about as if just trying to get through the day! One passenger commented that she thought they were actually virtual reality and not human at all! Cabin) 3 - Average, with some very poor design faults Dining) 0 - An utter disgrace, not helped by poorly trained, surly eastern European staff. The food had little choice, poorly cooked and invariably cold! Same menu for a week at a time, with everyone fighting to get a table of 6 or more. The restaurant management were never around to take complaints. I myself asked to see the food and beverage manager, which took from 10pm one evening to 11am the next to get to meet him. Entertainment) 1 - You get what you pay for. Second rate holiday camp entertainers. Service) 0 - The worst I've ever encountered on board a ship, and I've cruised for over 50 years! We chose Silver Sea because of the Travel & Leisure review. We are sorry we did. The office staff who booked our reservation proved to be incompetent and unavailable. I had to go to senior management to handle the simplest of questions. Then as time progressed important facts of the cruise kept changing, like the formal dress policy for which my wife had purchase dresses. This continued with the boarding time for disembarkation, the times and content of excursions, and the dinner times for restaurants. The people above us in our cabin were so loud we could not sleep. My wife got sea sick. The toilet kept leaking water which my wife tried to control with towels and ten came down with norovirus. That pretty much ruined our trip. Our butler and cabin assistant were helpful. The restaurant help were all very good and the food was excellent. But it does not balance against the management incompetence and the cost. Read Less

They were helping me to go through the process.. but after times i got annoyed because of the language issues..after sailing with the whisper even through it is older i felt comfortable with food, ambience and the personnel... .. we did not go to the activies ,it seems people were having fun.. We did go to a to St. Kitts on a train it was lovely and informative and the people were very attentive of my questions, All in all don’t if i wii ever come back to the muse..the Appiontments were. To summarize a cruise with "Silversea" would be to say it is like a "Cinderella Experience"! I realize everyone has their own preconceived expectations on what they are anticipating from "Their" cruise with no "2" being the same experience. To be sure there are individuals on each ship that are accustomed to being surrounded with staff that can address their every need and for them the cruise is merely an extension of their everyday lifestyle. However, it is perceived that for the vast majority on the ship, being treated with the level of "Silversea" personal detail is enjoyed and very much appreciated! Our close friends of 50 years invited us on this cruise and even though they have cruised on Silversea many times this was our first. Traveling about 12 weeks a year we have had the good fortune to travel almost all over the world, but this is only our 5th cruise, most have been on small ships with suite accommodations with accompanying staff . My first impression of Silversea is one of understated elegance and sophistication. The "Muse" certainly adheres to this theme and yet still remains open and inviting. We dined at all venues with the exception of the Japanese and found menu items on each menu that were over the top. We have to admit that part of the charm of this ship was great weather and sharing memories with such close dear friends. However, if I had to single out only "One", reason to chose Silversea over the many other choices available to you it would be that the staff and senior crew are exceptional individuals that go out of their way to make your cruising experience a memorable and enjoyable one. We have taken over 50 cruises, mostly on luxury lines and many times with Silverseas. embarkation was perfect.Stateroom(605) very good.Certainly the nicest of any line in minimum category. Very nice bathroom, but wonder why no drawers, difficult location for trash can, and small facial tissues(all minimal objections). Veranda spacious with two adequate chairs and one table. Our butler was terrific. Our friends, who had a two bedroom owners suite fired their butler and he was replaced with a satisfactory one. The restaurants varied as to quality and service. The french one, La note I think, was terrific and worth the additional charge..we went twice. The additional charge sushi restaurant we cancelled because of some complaints from other passengers. The buffet was very good. The pizza place was poor in both quality and service. Hot rocks very was very good. Entertainment was minimal as was afternoon tea service. Cruise directo was professional and excellent. I doubt if we would book the Muse again and are concerned if Silverseas is knowingly reducing the overall quality of their operation. We have booked the Wind for the transatlantic April 6 cruise and will be able to make a better judgement. Read Less

Wanted to try out this newest addition to the Silversea fleet. Had been past cruisers with them for many years (totalling 80+ seadays). Wanted a leisurely cruise in somewhere relatively close to home and offering warmth and sunshine. This cruise fit the bill. Very impressed with the suite assigned and found the public areas of the ship warm and welcoming. The embarkation was not as smooth as one would expect of a luxury small ship. After long flights to embarkation port, we did not appreciate the wait on shore for an extra 30 minutes because the ship chose to have a drill at that time of day. Dining was mostly good except for our experience at La Dame ( extra cost but below average quality of food). The Hot Rocks at the Grill continue their success with this concept and was a very good alternate dining venue for us. Dinner at the Terrazza was good but rather limited by an unchanging menu and generally not as satisfying as per our memory. Day time, the Terrazza was the go to meal venue for the majority. Pool was very good size and poolside had lots of space for loungers as well as comfortable poolside furniture. Several other outside areas on decks 8 and 9 for those who were inclined to avoid the poolside space. Forward observation lounge on Deck 11 was very small in comparison to other ships. Ships library was extremely limited and was an area that could be improved upon. No area where one could do a jigsaw puzzle during the voyage (Seabourn square concept). In terms of entertainment, the Silversea Singers all had good voices and were talented. We were grateful that the sound amplification was well managed and not excessive. Overall, a very enjoyable cruise and we would do more Silversea if it were on the Muse or the upcoming new sister ship. Read Less

We meet some great people allowing many opportunities for fellowship, etc. The Muse is a very nice ship with great appointments. The staff was attentive. Special recognition to our cabin butler and his associate. The food was great in all the restaurants with outstanding wine selections. Shore excursions meet and exceeded our expectations, Notables were Grenada, Bequia, Turks and Caicos, and Key West. Great shopping, great beaches, great Muse cruise guide and great security. We felt very safe and comfortable leaving the ship. Evening entertainment was acceptable. We would suggest a more diverse (Afro, Latin) performers. Embarkation and disembarkation was smooth and we had access to our cabin earlier that expected. We would definitely travel on the Muse and Silversea again. Hopefully, we hope to cruise the Latin (South) America area in the fall 2019 /spring 2020 period. In light of cruising in the Caribbean, I would have liked more casual days on the ship. Read Less

We chose Silversea some 18 months ago, because we have cruised with Regent and Seabourn and wanted to make a comparison. Silver Muse was a perfect choice because of the destination and timing. The "new ship" factor also helped! We traveled to Barbados independently on the day before we embarked the ship. We have been to Barbados many times, and our stay was entirely in our hotel. Embarkation was smooth on the following day, and we were aboard and having lunch quickly. Our stateroom was ready at around 2pm, and our luggage was delivered at the same time, including the suitcase that we had sent ahead using the Silversea service. Our stateroom was on Deck 8 midships, and was superb. Our butler Anu made himself known quickly, and was very attentive throughout the cruise. We loved the decor on board, as modern and minimalist suits us. We found the dining venues to be excellent and the service in all areas of the ship was excellent. We know the Caribbean quite well, and liked the islands visited. We always enjoy going to Bequia and the Dutch Antilles were a lovely surprise. We remained on board at some venues, as we had been before and were playing bridge at the time. Overall a fabulous experience, we will travel with Silversea again having booked a future cruise while on board. Read Less

Wanted to give the Muse a second shot before final impressions, since the Sept cruise (our fist one on the Muse) was its maiden crossing. Also, had booked this in place of an 8-day Whisper cruise which we had booked but which had gotten chartered out from under us. Since there was room enough in the suite, we brought one of our sons with us, age 35. This was our twenty-sixth Silversea cruise. We were in a Silver Suite on deck 10, previous cruise was on deck 11. As expected, the suite was really identical to the first one. Two exceptions: 1: the rainshower head was more mobile than the first time (first time it was either frozen in place or installed as a fixed shower head) and 2: the hot water came and went during the shower. Once the hot water was "fixed" on the first cruise, the temp was pretty steady. We started from Barbados (we had flown from the US two days before for some beach time, which got somewhat rained out during the one full day we had no obligations, and the winds were high leading to rough water). Embarkation on the 6th was easy as pie. Took a hired car from the hotel to the ship. No line. Luggage got settled very quickly. The usual white-gloved greeting at the gangway entrance to the ship, outside the reception area on deck 5. Included prosecco, water and juice. We were given our room keys when we checked in at the pier, and then were photographed for the ship ID card and turned in our passports at the reception area, prosecco in hand. That ID card gets you on and off the ship, so keep it safe and handy. We boarded about noon or so, with lunch available either in Terrazza (buffet) or Atlantide (table service). We chose the latter. Very cordial and attentive staff. Had to fill out the standard medical questionnaire re: gastrointestinal and cough disturbances. SUITE and SUITE SERVICE: Was sweet. Since we knew the ship, it was easy to find our suite after lunch. Some of the luggage was already there, some not (like mine). Nevertheless, those of us who could unpack did so. Since we were at leisure, we took our time, not a lot to do except wander about the ship (gave our son a tour) and attend the mandatory life-boat drill. No muss no fuss for the lifeboat drill, just follow the oral instructions. We had a different butler from the first cruise, but the same suite attendant, who remembered a lot of our preferences (i.e. the makeup of the bed blankets, refrigerator preferences, etc). When we did meet our butler, it was later in the afternoon, and he was able to find my suitcase (which took a long time to show up). A couple items went out for pressing from having sat in the suitcase for a few days--like my suit for the formal nights. Throughout the cruise, butler and suite attendant service was outstanding. Our son decided to use the couch itself for sleeping, rather than having it made up as a pull-out bed. Since his sleeping hours were irregular, the cabin staff worked around him for suite service, for which we were ever grateful. Our bed was firmly comfortable. And, as advertised there were robes in the suite. We recommend going up one or two sizes, since they run a little on the small side. Between the bed and the nightstands were reading lights, one each side, focusable and independently operated from the lighting system. Those came in handy. There was a clock radio with an iPod dock on the makeup table at the end of the bed, and this came in handy but was the only clock in the bedroom portion of the suite. So if you need something for your nightstand, bring a travel clock or a well-lit watch. The refrigerator door doesn't close very well, depending what's in it. There's an ice bucket in the fridge as well as cans and bottles. Plus, if you put a bottle of bubbly of some kind in there, it gets pretty crowded. Suite staff will bring just about anything in the way of wines, spirits, liqueurs and waters and they're complimentary, except the real premium stuff, which has a price list. Suite and loo/shower area were kept very clean. Shower and tub were separate. Verandah (balcony) was great in good weather (which we had). They are larger than the verandahs in the verandah suites themselves. A couple minuses: the TVs are embedded in the walls. This means the TV speakers can be heard through the wall. Our understanding is that this is being corrected. Never was really a problem for me, but the sound can come through if it's pretty quiet in the affected suite. Also, there are very few drawers in the closet area. So stuff was piled on shelves instead of in drawers. Different from other Silversea ships we have been on. Safe is small, not suitable for a full size laptop or iPad (iPad mini fit, barely). Plenty of space for shoes. Wooden and satin-padded hangers abound. One thing noticeable about this ship in contrast to other ships, hardly any real wood. Plastic laminates for walls and the uncarpeted floors, plastic wall frames, bannisters. Light colors which enhanced the feeling of spaciousness. DINING: There are eight venues, all different, and we took advantage of five of them (had done LaDame previously; we passed on Kaiseki and Silver Note (which we had also done previously). So that left Atlantide, which has a weekly changing menu, Indochine, (also a weekly menu), Terrazza, less frequent change, Spaccanapoli (pizza--thin crust) and Pool Grille. In the past, the paticular restaurant dictated the dress code. Now the dress code has been revised to reflect standard formal, informal and casual nights ship-wide. Please note that informal means jacket (no tie necessary) in any indoor venue after 6PM. If you prefer casual, you have to be outside or in your own suite. Contrary to previous availabilities, course-by-course restaurant dinner service is NOT available for room service (since there's no "retaurant")...there is an "All Around Dining" menu for that. Pretty standard stuff, but nothing like in the various venues. And I had to special order chicken soup for one of the venues (came as a consomme with thin julienned carrots). The triple-clarified beef consomme was EXTREMELY spicy, couldn't finish, even though it was in a small bowl. We ate at pool grille the first and last nights. Pretty windy, we had to wrap up. There are infrared heaters there and at Spaccanopoli. Very loud diners at some of the tables, especially the second time. Overall the food and beverages were great in all the venues, and the menu changes added to the variety. If you want a special order, like rack of lamb or steamed rather than grilled lobster tail, have to state so 24 hrs in advance. They are very accommodating. Some minuses: In Terrazza, the doors to the alfresco dining area can tend to stay open, and if it's windy outside, it's windy for part of inside too. Sometimes service is slow, depending on the experience of the waitstaff. Be prepared to take an hour and a half for dining. Atlantide and Indochine are open seating dining. On two occasions there was no space available when we went to Atlantide...the wait would have been at least 45 min. So we went over to Indochine, got seated right away. Terazza has two hand-washing sinks for guests, which we didn't see used very much, although we used them all the time. They're a good idea, especially since good handwashing beats sanitizer spray, especially to control norovirus. The line ought to award prize points to passengers with each use. Lunch was also avilable on the pool deck, with the accompanying bar service. Very nice pool deck menu. And much of the stuff is prepared right before your very eyes. During at-sea days, sometimes special dishes are prepared right on the deck, like paella. ENTERTAINMENT and ACTIVITIES: We did not attend any enrichment lectures, in contrast to previous cruises). We did co to a couple of entertainment shows. Some are better than others, and we've noticed quite a bit of change over the years. A lot depends on the company that supplies the entertainers and at what price (dictates the quality and experience of the cast). Some of the castmembers are new to the group, depending on the timing of them joining the ship, but they all seemed to blend very well. There was also a magician on board for a couple of shows. Generally we were either to tired to attend (most of the shows start at 10pm), or were still at dinner. Felt no obligation whatsoever to hustle just to go to a show. The only hustle we did was for shore excursions (of which we did three). We played team trivia most days, it is generally fun, sometimes a bit cutthroat (all for a bookmark or logo bottle opener). There was non-cast entertainment frequently: a piano player in La Dolce Vita (the bar), also a guitarist-vocalist), the Silver Muse Trio, a disco, and a duo in various places, and at SilverNote, a supper club-type of music entertainment. There were the other usual activities, like bridge, basic language instruction, coffee chats, etc. There were religious services on board, Sunday "church", Friday Jewish Sabbath, Hanukkah, and the grand staircase railings were decked out in Christmas decorations (hard to hold onto a railing in that case-->dangerous!). Sometimes clergy are aboard, depending on the type of religious activity. OVERALL SERVICE: Great throughout the ship. Earliest bar to open was pool at 9am. Prior to that you could get coffee at breakfast or via room service. The only coffee venue open earlier was the Arts Cafe: 6am or so, with coffee and snacks, but a very small place with not enough room, and hard to find a seat. In contrast to some of the other ships, the "observation" lounge doubles as a library, no early coffee service, but regular bar and hors d'oeuvres in the evenings. Generally there are plenty of places to find a beverage (leaded or unleaded), and of course, there's always in your suite. The maitre d's especially and many of the waitstaff go to great lengths to remember you, and that's an awesome plus. Everybody was kind and willing to go the extra mile, with one exception: my wife was "scolded" by a castmember (seriously!!!) for what was a perceived cutting of the line at immigration inspection, even though she was following the immigration officer who told a bunch of us to follow him when a new immigration passport inspection table opened. That was demeaning. Doesn't matter that she was wearing an ill-fitting black dress. Truthfully, I'm going to follow the guy with a uniform, ICE or CBP badge and a Glock). She reported it to reception, but received no apology for something that should not have happened. BIG MINUS!! PORTS and SHORE EXCURSIONS: Good choice of ports, although for great beach activities, not enough time was spent at the good beach ports, and more time was spent at shopping ports, even though Bonaire shops were mostly closed because of it being a Sunday. We zip-lined on St. Lucia (for the third time), beached it at Caya Levantado (Samana, Dom. Rep.), catamaran sail-snorkeled at Aruba, and were on our own at the terrific beach in Grand Turk, right at the end of the pier. There was also a cluster of good shops and a Margaritavile right there (it's called staggering back to the ship after the beach and Margaritaville, taking a long nap). There were scuba excursions offered, moreso than in the past (for awhile there were no scuba excursions offered, but "the times they are a changin' "). Although we are divers, we have elected to go on our own in the past, and there was a hefty price difference between some of the ports, not sure why. $249 for a two-tank dive at the Dominican Republic??? Caya Levantado had a great beach, although there were comb jellyfish in the water, which give off a bit of a sting, just a bit, though. The beach break had been advertised as beach barbecue with open bar, and greeting by native dancers. No dancers, barbecue nothing great and sometimes inedible, and bar was a cash bar. So somebody had difficulty with communication. Thank goodness for the beach and its attendants, as well as the water, even with the jellies. There were a couple of small children on the ship, a 3-year old and a five-year old (we think those were their ages), different families and both extremely well behaved. That's in contrast to some of the adult passengers. Our son, although chafed at the dress code, actually enjoyed the cruise a lot. His work uniform is a pair of cargo-shorts, steel-toed boots, a t-shirt, a tool-belt and a protective helmet (professional stagehand for concerts, trade shows and conventions). We would definitely go again, and actually have three more Silversea cruises booked. Shadow, Cloud Explorer, Whisper. We've sailed the Whisper the most, with Spirit in second place, but since the Spirit is going to be enlarged, we think it will be too big and crowded for us, having been spoiled by the smaller ships, including the four originals. But for a good feeling of intimacy and dine-where-and-when-you-want, this is the line. Read Less

Loved just sitting on the veranda with a drink in hand reading a good book as the Muse sailed along. Did not need to visit every port. My only gripe was that much of the sailing was during the night. However, the 2 sea days included bridge lessons as well as a duplicate game given by Sharon, one of the best teachers we have had teach. The fitness facility was much better equipped and larger than the other Silversea ships we have sailed on. Food was gourmet. Worth eating at La Dame even with the high surcharge. The lectures were excellent as well as the entertainment especially Levent the comic magician. Read Less

Very relaxing cruise on this gorgeous new (2017) ship. Just the right size with about 600 passengers. Enjoyed choosing from a variety of different restaurants for our meals. Food was the best we have ever had on Silversea. Sometimes there seemed to be a need for more wait staff as service could be quite slow. It seems unnecessary to charge guests $60 each for choosing to dine in 2 of the restaurants given that the fares for such a luxury cruise includes almost everything else. Stayed on the ship most of the time as we had visited several of the ports previously. Veranda Suites are very large for cruise cabins. Two large, inside the wall, TVs. Plenty of movies from which to choose. The Spa staff are superb so we enjoyed various services. Staff do try hard to sell you spa products after the services. Looking forward to our next cruise on the Muse. Read Less

We chose this cruise for two reasons, the itinerary and the Muse being an elegantly new ship and weren’t disappointed. Overall the ship is well appointed in a neutral palette with pleasing art. The suites are bright, airy, spacious and have loads of storage. For us the chair and sofa could be more comfortable. We had no problems with noise and the television/entertainment system in the mirrors is ingenious. You have two viewing options, seated or from the bed. Servicing of our suite was impeccable. Our suite attendant, Jobie, was so attentive to our personal requests, especially with making our bed more comfortable for our needs. For us our major complaint is with the dining venues. We experienced weather where outdoor dining was not an option. That automatically eliminates the Grill (Hot Rocks in the evening) and Spaccanapoli. We cruise to relax and not to be held to dining in formal attire. We do dress very appropriately for the evening but choose not to wear tuxedos, dinner jackets, ties and evening gowns. With that said, dining in Kaiseki or La Dame is then not an option. Thus, that leaves five options, Atlantide, La Terrazza, Indochine, Silver Note or room service. Two of the above require advance reservations well before your cruise departure date. The menus are set for one week with very few or no nightly specials so a 17 day voyage became tiresome when dining in the evening. The Arts Cafe needs much improvement in food selection and level of service. An elegant afternoon tea in the Reception Lounge would be a lovely addition to the shipboard experience. Puzzling, the setting in the Arts Cafe is not befitting in elegance or size for 596 passengers to enjoy afternoon tea. Ports of call were either excellent or very good. I will say we did use use 6 private tour excursions and 4 ship excursions. What is important to you when you select a cruise dictates your choice. For us, the shipboard dining experience needs to be revamped. The Muse excels in all aspects except dining. Read Less

We booked this cruise specifically to experience the fjords of Chile and to see the Avenue of the Glaciers. We had been on the maiden voyage of the Muse in April 2017 and enjoyed it, so we were happy to be on the ship again. The Silversea team recognized the dining issues that the Muse had in launching and corrected them in a very good way. We liked the dress code which is now done by evening instead of location. Our cabin had no issues, 814. The service was top notch and while we are light users of the butler service, Abraham could not do enough for us. Several times a day the suite was refreshed -it was always perfect. We found the entertainment a bit light but did not always attend the shows. Of all the restaurants on board, we found the service and quality to be best at Atlantide. And therefore it was difficult to get in if you did not go early, which was not our first choice in timing for dinner. Indochine was much better than the April cruise and we went here often. La Terrazza was consistent but we always seemed to get seated in the back room, which we did not enjoy. I think Kaiseki is just OK and not worth the extra charge. This trip had quite a number of days at sea and we were blessed with excellent weather. This was quite extraordinary according to the Captain. All is all, an excellent experience and we booked another cruise in Asia! Read Less

Cruise was chosen for itinerary and experience with this line. Overall, a new, contemporary ship beautifully done with generous size cabins, public areas. The service through all departments was virtually flawless. There are eight evening restaurants on board, two of which are additional cost, two outside. We don't think extra cost restaurants are appropriate at this "all inclusive" level. The real problem is a limited menu selection in each venue, which for the first 20 days never changed. Shortly after the first 18 day segment, a special of the evening appeared in two of the larger venues, perhaps the result of passenger feedback. The special, typically continental, made little sense in Indochine, the Asian. The two outside restaurants, were too cold to enjoy for many days. Unlike other luxury lines, there were no regional or country specific full menu offerings on some evenings. The Silver Note opens at 8:00 PM for a couple of hours, with a very limited menu. There is no casual dining both in dress code and atmosphere. While food quality and presentation was always superb, there is a lack of sensitivity to availability of dietary requirements, ie. sugar free. Ship ran out of Non alcoholic wine in twenty days. Normally stocked, and requested by us in advance for cabin, none was brought on in Florida at start of cruise. Senior officers said they did not have the authority to bring it in from US, but had to wait two weeks plus for a sister ship to supply them. Entertainment was limited and repetitive. Ran out of American Chardonnays and Becks with a very limited beer selection, hardly any regional beers brought on. Read Less

New ship; opportunity to traverse Panama Canal. Love there decor of there Muse along with the spacious Silver Suite cabin. Dining choices were interesting with no problem in obtaining seating in venue of choice. Land tours were much the same as in previous cruises: some wonderful, others not so. Need to better study options. Can't say enough of the Muse. Brings Silversea to another level, while not losing any of there charms of its smaller sisters. Was concerned that the Main Dining Room was removed; but the varied choices and similarity of Atlantide to a large dining facility easily removed any concerns. Thought quality of lecturers was better in general than we've experienced. Particularly enjoyed the gentleman who gave fun talks on show biz personalities from Sinatra, to Irving Berlin, to Judy Garland. Cabin service was basically the same, with wonderful Butler and Room Attendant staffing. Like the more Television options, particularly the inclusion of ESPN and MSBC. What's not to like!!! Read Less

14th – 31st Oct 17 Fort Lauderdale to Santiago aboard Silver Muse Silver Suite #1007 Having sailed on Silversea many times before, we booked to go on this voyage on the Silver Muse a year ago. We deliberately avoided going soon after its maiden voyage in Apr 17. Surely, all the gremlins would be fixed by Oct 17? In Apr 17 we started to monitor the reviews on Cruise Critic. They seemed almost completely negative. So many complaints – some pretty serious. We almost got to the point of cancelling. But we were looking forward to the itinerary. So, with trepidation, we suffered the 9 hour flight to Miami and, after a night at the Marriot in Fort Lauderdale, we embarked on Silver Muse. The first point to make is that, once on-board, we were told that the much criticised reservation system had been modified and that Atlantide and Indochine – the two side-by-side biggest restaurants - were now open seating. To be fair, we had already made reservations for every night online before we left and we pretty much kept to our plan anyway. But I could see that many guests were very happy that they could now dine when they wanted and with whom they wanted. It was a daft concept anyway and ‘good riddance’! The Dress Code had also been altered so that, rather than applying by restaurant, it applied by night. Most nights were casual or informal. On the few formal nights I counted 50% of men with dark suits and ties rather than evening dress. Other changes related to the menus – which now change every 7 days (or thereabout). Heaters had been installed on the pool deck to allow dining in colder climes. Also, it looks like fresh fish was loaded wherever possible. All great changes! Décor I really liked the light, modern, tasteful décor. We had been on the new Regent SevenSeas Explorer which had dark wood, sequined cushions and ‘Bling, Bling, Bling’. The Silver Muse was much more to my taste. Silver Suite #1007 Our Silver Suite was really spacious – over 700 sq ft- and had everything you could desire. As well as Butler Service, Silver Suites come with free laundry and complimentary internet access (ie NOT limited to 1hour per day as in most other suites). Worth saying that the speed of the internet is the fastest and most reliable I have experienced on a ship. Our Butler – OKI – was excellent. Apart from the usual stuff like bringing us tea in the morning and afternoon, he went the extra mile. I always found my shoes freshly cleaned and wrapped in tissue! Our chambermaid – ROMELYN – did a great job. Always spotlessly clean. The niggles we had revolved around there being no drawers anywhere in the bathroom, loo or dressing room. Crazy! Whoever decided that was a good idea should be sacked! Also, the Silver Suites have a totally useless corridor which could easily have been incorporated into the suite making much better use of the space. The beds were to our liking as they were quite firm. We had the best sleeps ever. Our suite was quiet (we always choose suites with no public areas above or below). The suite does creak when there is any sea motion. You could hear our neighbours TV through the flimsy walls. But they seemed to go to bed early like us so we were never really inconvenienced. We are both allergic to air conditioning and have had some miserable voyages as a result. Why on earth in this day and age you can’t control the fan strength, or even switch the AC off completely as you can in some hotel rooms, is beyond me. But the AC was efficient and the fan strength very mild. Ie it didn’t blow a gale across you at night. So we had no problems there. Fellow travellers There was a good mix of nationalities. Indeed, I’d say the British were the second most ‘popular’ after the Americans. Anyway, everyone was really pleasant. Age-wise I’d say almost everyone was 50+ but without the preponderance of ‘very old and infirm’ you get on some cruises. I believe, however, that only about 490 passengers (the Silver Muse has a capacity of 596) were on board for this voyage – and 94 of them got off for four days to go to Machu Picchu and another 17 left at the ship at Lima. So the Muse was running at far less than max. capacity. Obviously not good for Silversea but a ship that is not full often provides a better experience for guests. The service levels everywhere – from bars, restaurants, around the pool and in the suite – were really excellent. Could not be faulted. I wonder what service is like when ship is full? Food We do like our food. Therefore the criticisms in the 70+ previous reviews were pretty alarming. Of course, they might have taken these criticisms into account and changed things – as they had with the reservation system. But on our cruise we thought the standard of the food overall was excellent. Breakfast is faultless whether you go a la carte in Atlantide or buffet in La Terrazza. You can literally get anything you want. Eggs always cooked exactly as I had asked for. Lunch is either on the pool deck, buffet in La Terrazza or a la carte in Atlantide. The pasta station in La Terrazza is excellent and there is always a ‘roast of day’ as well as many other choices. On deck they grilled freshly caught fish on many days. The sea bream on our first sea day was a high point. You have 8 restaurants to choose from:- Atlantide was pretty good. I thought the lobster salad as a starter was v good. Indeed I had it several times. Service was good – attentive, friendly and no noticeable delays. Food was hot. Wine choice (we never paid extra for any premium wines) was good. However, on one night the restaurant was full and the service level suffered accordingly… Menu changed in the last week. Indochine had a great modern layout. The first dinner we had here was the star of the whole voyage. Foie gras starter, the Kamchatckacrab legs main and sesame fried bananas for dessert. Pure magic. We went three times. They changed the menu on the last night. Personally I preferred the first one! La Terrazza – Serves dinner too. Good standard of Italian food with wide choice so you can visit several times without repetition. We would have preferred to select out own antipasta but we discovered that you could ask for a shared antipasta plate as a starter. Silver Note. Very relaxed with music. Food ‘OK’ but nothing really special. My lobster with mashed potatoes was disappointing. The plates were ridiculous -particularly the ones that resembled a snowy volcano. Bring back proper plates! The Grill – This is the Deck 10 restaurant by the pool which serves lunch (everything from grilled fish of the day to burgers and chips) and at night becomes a ‘HotRocks’ venue. We really enjoyed cooking our own prawns, steak , lamb chops (other choices were available). Could have done with a wider range of starters (just salads on offer). The newly installed heaters were appreciated as we ventured south and it got colder. La Dame – You pay an extra $60pp for this restaurant and, frankly, we did not think it was worth it. The food on offer is no better than Atlantide. Indeed, we were disappointed on our visit. I chose frogs legs but the batter was soggy. My breast of duck came as just that. It could have done with some vegetables. But the real disappointment was the soufflé. You can judge a good chef by his soufflé which should have risen considerably and be light as air inside. This soufflé had not risen at all and was both soggy and undercooked inside. We sent it back but the replacement was little better. To be fair, every other guest we encountered spoke very highly of La Dame. Maybe we had a freak night. Kaiseki – Without doubt the BEST restaurant on the Silver Muse. The food is cooked in front of you at this Japanese restaurant. No real choice – just dish after dish. Three starters followed by mains of Butterfly Lobster, Miso Black Cod and Wagya Beef Teriyaki, followed by Tempura Ice Cream were all ‘to die for’.Worth every penny of the $60pp extra charge. We went twice! Spaccanapoli – Is the open air pizza restaurant on Deck 11. Sorry - we never went. Spa – Some say the Spa was small but the treatment rooms were fine and well equipped. I had two massages from a young lady called Briony. Excellent – although they did cost $249 each! Entertainment/Lectures Corey Sandler was, without doubt, one of the best ‘Destination Lecturers’ we have had on any cruise. He had that mix of knowledge and wit. We seldom go to the shows at 10.00pm. On this cruise they had entertainment that started at 6.30pm and, as a result, was extremely well attended. Indeed the theatre as full! Not only that but the shows – opera, show music, classic rock etc.- were of a very high standard. They ended at c7.10pm when we went off to dinner. I don’t know why more cruise lines don’t do this. As usual, we participated in Team Trivia each afternoon with the Cruise Director – Jimmy – who was very good. It always astounds me how seriously everyone takes this and, indeed, how extremely knowledgeable our fellow guest are! Excursions You have to pay extra for all the excursions. Our bill for the 18 days came to more than $4000. They were mostly enjoyable. The exceptional trips were: Lima - Peru Civilisations & Private Hacienda which included a display by Peso horses and associated dancers. Lima – Colonial Lima which included a wonderful visit to private villa. BTW – Traffic in Lima is terrible and we spent many hours in traffic jams Pisco - Flight over the Nazca Lines in a Cessna. This was, for me, THE high spot. Although it did cost $798 for the two of us. Arica, Chile – Atacama Coastal Trek. It was such a joy to get some decent exercise walking for about 2 miles along the fantastic coastal path. Some well-made, some just a sandy ridge with a steep drop, even some scrambling over rocks. We saw sea lions, lizards, brightly coloured crabs, rock pools teeming with fish and, of course, lots of birds like pelicans and vultures. Really great trip. Worst excursion by far was: Matarani, Peru – Mejia National Sanctuary. Over four hours on a minibus – most bumpy over unmade roads. We got out, I guess, for 20 minutes in total. I have seen far more birds in my garden at home. A real disappointment. Just a warning to guests who decide to go out on their own in these ports in Peru. The ship is usually a long way from the port security entrance. Guests taking private taxis were dumped at the port gates and had huge problems – and not a little danger – getting from there to the ship at night. Be warned. Several other cruise lines (eg Scenic) have moved to equipping guests with audio headsets for excursions. We prefer that as you can always hear the commentary even if you wander away from the guide to look at something. Alternatively, you can switch it off on the coach if you have a guide who thinks it is their job to fill every minute of a two hour journey with talk… A personal note to the management of Silversea Compared to the experiences of those who had sailed on the Silver Muse in the early months since its launch in April 17, we seem to have had a better experience than many. Certainly, better than the majority of those who have taken the trouble to write a review for Cruise Critic. Silver Seas have listened to its critics and had changed a whole host of things like open seating in the main restaurants, a sensible dress code, changing menus on a regular basis, more fresh, local food, heaters on the pool deck grill etc. But Silversea has been a leading cruise operator for decades. Not only that but they should know their clientele well as they have a very high level of 'repeat business'. We now have 100+ nights on Silversea. So all these changes just put the Muse back doing it the 'tried and tested' way employed on their other ships. But there are issues on the Muse that are more difficult to fix. Why can't the theatre accommodate the Captain's Welcome or Farewell parties? Why is the Dolce Vita lounge so huge it resembles an airport waiting area? Why do the bathrooms and dressing rooms have no drawers? Why are there no 'coffee corners' where you can go to help yourself to a coffee/tea and a biscuit? Why is it impossible to hear any of the announcements in your suite? It was a standing joke that everyone opened their suite doors to hear the announcements! Why do the ceilings creak? Why can you hear your neighbour's TV in your suite? I could go on and on. Then there are the staff. The staff on Silversea are exceptional. They have made every cruise we gave been on. Indeed they were exceptional on our cruise this time too. But they weren't like that in the earlier Muse cruises. I asked several staff members about this and got the same story. Silversea took on a lot of 'new to Silversea' staff initially. The combination of inexperience plus the constant complaints from guests meant that many resigned (I was told). All the staff we met on our cruise been drafted in from other Silverseas ships - often we were told at short notice. On our cruise, the Food and Beverage Director of the whole Silversea fleet was in board supervising the changes to the menus. Remember this is SIX MONTHS after its maiden voyage. The point I would make is that all of these are basic management failures. I hope the Project Manager for the Muse has been fired because he would have no place in my own company having made so many basic and totally avoidable mistakes. I know several people who sailed on those early Muse voyages who have vowed never to sail Silversea again. That inflicts huge damage on a company that relies on customer loyalty. At the very least I would advise Silversea to let these people know of the changes that have been made and maybe offer them some incentive to try the Muse again. We had a great cruise. The Silver Muse is a lovely ship. With a few further tweaks it could become what it clearly intended to be - The best luxury cruise ship in the world. Read Less
