I choose this ship because at the time the sale was great and I needed to find something to do for my son's 15th Birthday. There were mixed reviews about the size of the ship since it's the smallest from RC so we knew what we were getting into. The cabin was very small and it was the smallest we've ever had but we made the best if it for the four of us. We stood on the third deck and there was such a bad smell that the housekeeping tried covering it up with bleach which only made it worse. Since the rooms are so small we heard everything that went on the cabin beside us and I hardly slept. The channels on the tv were either in Spanish or French (not good) and if you were on the bunk bed there was not way for you to even see it, it wasn't mounted it was on a stand. The room steward was very shady in terms of not being sincere. This lady (completely forgot her name) had a lot to say about several passengers and that was very unprofessional. She had a job to that's why they hired her and even though the cabin was as clean as it can get the steward was too busy gossiping and put up a fake smile and once you turned the smile was gone. The cruise director and the other staff were great especially in the dining room. We had two great servers one was Farhat and Viktor from Ukraine and they were very very good to us. The food was not horrible it was okay, however I had to send back out chicken on one of the nights because it was still pink (yuck) and so we had to ask for our chicken to be very well done otherwise you will see pink and the waiters along with the Manager were very understanding and brought us back the food really cooked. The food in the Windjammer for breakfast was always the same it never changed but it was okay. Lunch was good and I liked that they had several times for late snacks. During the Super bowl they had food out in the bar and poolside which was nice to have. Also in the Windjammer you has to wash your hands before entering, definitely liked that. The activities were okay. The kids enjoyed the rock climbing. They did not go to any of the camps. The ship had a lounge area towards the gym that was never put to use (never understood why) most ships will use that lounge to have comedy shows but it didn't happen here. The first comedian on day one was a juggler we enjoyed that show. The second comedian was a bit older like stuck in the 60's era so it he wasn't that great and it felt a little uncomfortable since he got political and that's not something that I want to hear about on my cruise. In Coco Kay Island the weather was beautiful but not for the water. The buffet they offer was just okay. Embarkation and disembarkation were smooth no issues there. I would not go back on this ship since my family and I are ship explorers and now we can check the Empress off of our list. Read Less

This was my first cruise. We chose it for the value. I guess you get what you pay for. We also wanted a short one and to go to the Bahamas Everything was great except the service. I stated this all through the survey. How many times do I have to say it. Food was exceptional, cabin was great entertainment was great. Love Coco Cay. Beautiful beach. One suggestion. is to have a little shopping on that island. I think you could make some extra money. The shopping should have had more of a choice. Some of the stuff was very cheesy. That is why I didn't buy anything. The comedian was hysterical. He was funny and clean. I apprecialed that. The juggler was OK. One if the hiughlights is that I didn't even know the ship was moving. I loved that. Read Less

Choose your time to eat in the restaurant - long wait times or 6:30 or 8:30 options only. Nice BBQ on island must pay for umbrellas or burn in the sun. some trees for natural shade. Bar and excursions as usual very very overpriced. Not recommended MeuterMedia! Read Less

I am a diamond plus member and have sailed on over 30 cruises with Royal Caribbean. I have also sailed with Princess, Carnival, Norwegian, Holland, Disney, MSC and Costa. This cruise will go down as the worst that I have sailed. Royal Caribbean has always been my favorite but they are going down hill at a fast pace. I was on the Freedom during New Years and I was displeased with the food, entertainment staff and service. I didn't think it could get any worst but it did on the Empress. We were a group of 7 and 3 were first time cruisers. Confusion began at the pier, we were docked on the other side at pier J. Getting into the parking garage was madness, very unorganized. Then when we went to check in 2 of my friends were given someone else's sea passes and their credit cards were connected to those accounts. It took 45 minutes for the agent to correct the mistake that she had made. We proceeded to the windjammer for lunch. The food was horrible, tasteless and lacking. No beverage service and wait staff took forever to pick up dirty plates. I went to the ice cream machine to make me a cone and there was a staff member there making the cones for the guest. I told her that I wanted to make my own and she said she had to do it and yes some one was there daily making cones. We all proceeded to our stateroom (3 cabins among the 7 of us). The same 2 friends of mine that had an issue with check in had an issue with their cabin not being available due to maintenance. They went down to customer service and was given an upgrade to ocean view, their keys didn't work twice and they had to go up and down to get this resolved. Both of them being first time cruisers and everything going wrong was a turn off for them. We went to the dinning room for dinner and they had a table for 6 although there was 7 of us.They squeezed in another setting and it was uncomfortable, The dining room food was not worth the trouble, worst meal ever. We ate at the windjammer for dinner for the remaining duration of the cruise which wasn't much better. They served the same food every day in the Windjammer. Room service can't get the order correct. Bar staff was standing around doing nothing, we had to go up to the bar to get drinks. This was the first Royal ship that I didn't see bar staff walking around selling drink of the day or taking orders for drinks. The public bathrooms were not kept clean, down right dirty. Our stateroom attendant was pretty good, we did get animal towels for 2 nights but my friends didn't get any and they were not happy with their stateroom attendant. This was basically the cruise from hell. It was hot in our cabin and other areas on the ship, especially the casino. Entertainment was the worst that I have ever seen on any cruise line. The entertainment staff was lazy and non existent most of the time, limited activities. Staff members were not friendly and officers would pass by without speaking, this is not acceptable, Royal Caribbean has lost focus on what made them Royal. They used to have excellent food, excellent service and excellent entertainment. Royal Caribbean has been going down hill for the past 2 years and they have reached the bottom. I will not be sailing with Royal Caribbean for a while. I have booked my next 3 cruises with Princess. Read Less

I have cruised about 4 times now. This ship along with her sister Majesty should be retired.. or it should be stated that it is a very basic cruise ship. Once you've toured the ship (about 30 mins bow to stern) you're done. There is nothing to do. No discos, no night clubs, ONE theater with awful shows. The casino was smaller than I have ever seen, however it wasn't very busy. I guess the patrons on this ship didn't have the extra money to spend. The food was not very good either, windjammer breakfast was cold and eggs were runny. We tried room service for the first morning, it was late and cold. If I sail again with Royal, it will be in the higher class ships not with the walmart crowd. The main dining staff, Remy, was great. The embarkation was always on time and the guest services folks were always attentive. I did not complain on the ship, but If I could have flown home from nassau - I would have. This ship is very outdated. Read Less

This cruise was a fun getaway from our usual responsibilities and cold winter weather. It was an opportunity to renew the romance in our 40 year marriage. The staff was friendly and dedicated to making our experience successful. As usual with Royal Caribbean, the food was very good, the entertainment excellent, and the service impeccable. From the time our plane touched down and we claimed our baggage we experienced topflight service. A cruise representative met us and led us to a waiting area before boarding a shuttle to the Port. A well organized protocol made boarding smooth and easy and soon we were exploring the ship to see what we could find. Rest and relaxation were a priority for us and eating and sleeping seemed the best methods to achieve them. We took advantage of the dining opportunities sampling food that was atypical for us, even experimental. Fortunately the menu provided a variety of choices and tastes and when sharing our table with others provided opportunities for new friends as well. First class entertainment balancing dance, music, and comedy provided excitement, and laughter. After a day basking in the sun, exploring ports of call, eating to our hearts content, and enjoying an evening's entertainment, sleep came easily and deeply. Now we're home with our goals reached and fond memories made. Thanks to the staff of the Empress of the Seas. Read Less

This was a last minute spur-of the moment cruise for my husband's birthday. Overall, we were satisfied but as it did not give us the WOW Factor we wanted, I doubt we will cruise with Royal Caribbean again. Wait staff (main dining room and housekeeping), were overly friendly. We don't really like being called by our first names by strangers. It is, in our opinion, unprofessional. Food... we cruise for the food! but this was a disappointment. We don't mind spending $$$ for good food, but the charbroiled steak at the specialty restaurant, wasn't (charbroiled). They brought the gluten-free bread cold. Anyone who has tried to eat GF bread cold knows that its HORRIBLE! Everything else was just OK. We ate breakfast in the main dining room only once, apparently special requests are not appreciated (even the request for gluten-free). And we only ate once in the ship's dining room for dinner. This was only a three night cruise, so the last night we ate at the buffet on-board. We should have eaten the buffet for all meals! It was fresh and hot at all times. Food was not labeled well for GF but was labeled for Vegetarians. Room service was fast and came hot, too bad they didn't offer any GF options, nor would they substitute anything. Shore excursions were enjoyable and worth the money we spend. BBQ lunch on the beach was seriously lacking in taste. We ended up going back to the ship to the buffet. SPA services were lovely. We only had a mani/pedi done but the staff in the spa were really wonderful. It was relaxing! Read Less

I first sailed on Empress out of NYC in 2001 just before 911. Being back on board filled me with mixed emotions. Overall, it is a really quaint ship. I must admit that I missed the lack of activities for Crown and Anchor members. There could and should have been at least one meet and greet. Embarkation was the easiest and quickest that I ever experienced, as was disembarkation. The rooms were ready early. There are no refrigerators in the room, which may be problematic for passengers with medication requiring refrigeration. The staff is warm, friendly and helpful. The food was good, not great. I don't find food great on many ships these days. The ship was clean and we'll maintained. I love that the track is on the lower level so as not be to disturbed by those who photograph the sunrise. I will definitely sail Empress again. I booked to sail again in April. Read Less

It sounded good for our honeymoon. Unfortunately, Too many disappointments. No map of the ship, Food not available 24/7, Soft Drinks included are limited to ice tea, Water or Lemonade. Maid service was erratic. Door on the Bathroom was rotting on the bottom. Rust forming in the shower. Too many workers with accents, so you can't understand them. Menu at main dining rooms was the same every night. The only PERK we received as honeymooners was a bottle of Champagne. The DJ did not have up to date music for dancing. TV service was lousy. They had four channels devoted to the Empress of the Seas description. There was a problem with volume on one channel so i call guest services and they did not resolve it and never called back to let me know the outcome. I would not recommend this ship to anyone I would stir clear away to another cruise line. Read Less

I thought that the Empress was part of a line that gave great service, entertainment, etc. Wrong. The service was great, however! The cabin was fine, but the outside window was so dirty that the view was difficult. The strangers at my dinner table had cruised before and their reactions were the same as mine. A main attraction of cruises is the food, including large, elegant buffets. Not on this ship.I ate on shore, whenever possible. I can have chicken at home. Entertainment? Where? On the staircase of the ship where people had to crowd to see? On the pool deck where people had to crowd to see? In the theater where no one cared to see? The same food every day, no matter where we ate. Nassau was filthy with vulgar tour guide who kept injecting sex act into every sentence. That was not ship's fault, but the port is the worst ever. I will never return to that place. I traveled with another adult. I would not travel on this cruise line again. What an ordeal. The luggage removal the night before departure caused a "camp ground" situation on the last night. Yikes! People who have never been on cruise ship did not know the difference. I guess they thought that is as good as it gets. Read Less

Came back to Royal Caribbean because of prior cruise. Food and service was excellent. Island activities well planned. Deluxe drink package a must and well used. Only problem was with our cabin. We were not happy with vile odors coming from bathroom and constant problems with the Heat/AC unit. The entertainment shows were high caliber, entertaining and a lot of fun. The wait staff in our evening dining room were extremely friendly, looking out for our best interests, always smiled and were extremely respectful and courteous. We did reserve one dinner at Chops specialty restaurant which turned out to be even more outstanding. We would recommend to go slowly as there was so much tasty food that just kept coming. The wait staff were high caliber and couldn't do enough for us. We were a little unhappy with the disembarkation process upon docking back at Miami. We were told we would not be allowed to disembark with out roll on luggage and would have to leave them out during the prior evening. However, there was an announcement that those with carryon bags can leave the ship anytime they wanted. I couldn't believe I heard that after the ship's personnel told us we had to check all our bags. But overall a great experience and we booked another cruise in December while on the ship. Read Less

This was my first cruise. You have to be careful of all the hidden fees. Do your homework before booking. The entertainment weren't that good and when you're confined, you don't have much choice. The excursions are overprice and not worth it. Unless you been to each location before, you might avoid certain excursions. As my firstMy cruise, I didn't have any idea what to except, so do some homework on that also. The cruise itself was nice. The staff were really great. They could have better activities on the ship and for the food, there is plentiful. Don't forget the ice cream cones...mmmmm I was in a stateroom with a view. I thought the room was going to be small with a little round window. I was pleasantly surprise when I opened the cabin door. the room was much roomier than I was told about and it was a full size window. The only thing that was small was the shower stall. We chose this cruise based on the good deal we got, but from the moment of arrival, there was nothing that seemed "discounted" about our cruise (in a good way). We had the best time of our lives. The staff was friendly, personable, funny, charming, helpful, attentive and accommodating. The activities and theme nights were tons of fun. The ports were awesome: We chose to tour Key West on our own and had a beautiful day visiting historical sites and lounging on the beach as well as dining and shopping. In Nassau, we went to Atlantis and had a blast. This was our first cruise, so we probably appreciated the small size of the empress more than some who are seasoned cruisers. It was perfect for us so we were not overwhelmed, but there was never a lack of things to do, even during our full day at sea. The dining experience was amazing. Elegant and delicious food in both the main dining area and buffet, never a shortage of snacks and drinks available to us. Read Less

We have reviewed this ship before so I will limit this to things unique to these two four night back to back cruises. Nassau and Key West were the two ports of call with one sea day in between. Unlike most cruises to Key West, these stayed in port until 8:00 pm. Because of the time of year, this meant that it was there after sunset and so it was possible to walk around town at night. This adds a whole different atmosphere to the town than in the daytime, and it was great fun. Part of the fun was the famous sunset celebration on Mallory Pier. This consists of jugglers, acrobats, craft carts and music. Because the ship docked right on Mallory Pier you could even watch from the promenade deck if you didn't feel like going ashore again in the evening. And you could watch the sun set from the other side of the ship! It is good to se this kind of creative scheduling, as I have often wondered why ships didn't stay late enough for this event, which is a famous feature of Key West. Most things on the ship were the same as on the previous cruises. The staff remains a highlight of this ship. Diamond and above will find the receptions and special gatherings memorable, even though there is still no nightly reception. The dining room food and service remains excellent, but unfortunately the Windjammer continues to be a big disappointment. Why it is not possible to have grapefruit halves at breakfast, even though they did on previous cruises on this ship, is a mystery. And why can't they have a selection of different cold cereals in individual boxes like on every other RCI ship? Especially when most of the choices in the rather tacky bulk dispensers are sugared kids brands. This was the first time we could not have the buffet on the sea day due to the fact that the line was enormous all morning long. Not sure why, as this was not the case previously. Too bad, because this is a nice feature of the ship, but no good if you can't get in the door. Capt. Diego, Staff Capt. Chema, Rosa and Gulliana (guest services), Ricardo (loyalty ambassador), Silvia (my time dining), Rafael and Made (cabin stewards), Carlos (Boleros) and many other wonderful staff members make this a great ship to spend time on. On a final note, the seas were calm all week, which was fortunate. Probably calmer in the Bahamas this time of year than the windy Western Caribbean. Some have said on this site that this ship does not have stabilizers, but in fact it does. But if seas are too rough they can't compensate for it. No issues on these sailings, thank goodness for that! Read Less

We went to Key West, Florida and to Nassau, Bahamas in a four nights cruise, but even when it was a short length of time we has a wonderful trip and a very good experience as passengers of the beautiful Empress of the Sea. The ship is very comfortable and has all the amenities you need to make you feel at home. Even in an interior cabin you will have all your bear necessity cover almost in the same way you can expect from a luxury one, of course the difference is on the space but you after all you will note that this will not be an inconvenience. Embarkation and disembarkation was a pleasant process. We start planning our next vacation with Royal Caribbean today! Read Less

I am a diamond member and usually enjoy cruising with RCCL. On this cruise, my wife and I did not get any sleep because of loud banging (construction) going on below our cabin. The Director of Housing was attentive and immediately changed my room on the first night, but the noise only got worse in the new room. The first evenings dinner (NY strip) was lousy. No one at the table could eat it. I overheard other guests complain about the same meal. The headliner comedians were very funny and provided great entertainment, however, the RCCL singers and dancers seemed amateur-ish and not the usual great quality of entertainment we have experienced on past cruises. Even though gratuities are automatically added to the daily bill (as well as the 18% service charge for every service or drink) the staff still had their hands out for more. While reading at the pool, two young ladies struck up a conversation and were very disappointed with this as their first cruise. They wanted to actually abandon ship on day one and get their money back but were told it would cost them another $300 just to leave. I did share with them that while I was equally disappointed, my past experiences with RCCL were much better. Suggested that as mid-20 year olds, they might try spring or summer break cruises on larger ships. The age group, entertainment and activities might better match what they envisioned cruising would be. Read Less

My wife chose this cruise for our anniversary. I have been on nearly all of the RCCL cruise ships and I have to say, this was the worst. First of all, let's talk about the Junior Suite ripoff game they have going on here. They sell you a room as a Junior Suite, when on any other ship, it's just a balcony room. For the extra amount you are paying for a "Junior Suite", you get the same prison shower that you get on the regular balcony rooms, no fridge, very little storage, etc. IT'S A BALCONY SUITE NOT A JUNIOR SUITE. In reality, I have been on other ships in their balcony rooms which turned out to be bigger than this "JUNIOR SUITE". This is a complete rip off. Let's turn our attention to the food. Small selection and I could not find one decent piece of meat to eat. All of them were tough and dry. The chicken was actually much better prepared and seasoned than the meat. And seriously, we need two Mexican nights. Let's turn our attention to the drinks. Sat out by the smoking area most of the afternoon and not one single waiter came by to take my order. Had to flag one of them down and I realized he was like a manager but at least he was nice enough to get me a drink. Let's turn out attention to the ship itself, it's 26 years old and it shows it. It is in dire need of a lot of minor repair work. Bulbs are out, canvases are ripped, carpeting is pulled up, etc. This ship still needs a lot of work. Oh and last but not least, when decided to do the early disembark, what I like to call the walk off. We got there fairly early and people were hanging around. We sat there for like 15 minutes and then when new people started showing up instead of getting to the back of the line they just walked right up to the front and stood there. My wife said something to one of them and then another passenger said that their is no line. This created a stanpeed of people rushing for the door. The only question, I have is where are the RCL employees who are supposed to guide people when they come in. Nowhere to be found. Overall, this was a huge disappointment for us and we will never be back on this ship again and I do not suggest you go either. RCCL has much better ships with much better deals than this one. Don't waste your time or your money. Read Less

The embarkation & disembarkation was the best & smoothest I have ever seen. But As a seasoned cruiser I will tell you that...This ship is the oldest & smallest & the most dated in the RCL fleet. Their is very limited amount of things that you can do on the ship due to it's age & size. However the crew goes way above & beyond to try to compensate for this; which is a big plus. Although RCL did an update on this ship they didn't go quite far enough with the reconditioning of it & it shows. We did the Atlantis water park & all the bathrooms & 1/2 the rides were closed due to an water/ sewer main issues & none of the staff was informed about the bathrooms being closed until several hours later & then only some of the bathrooms were later opened; which when traveling with kids is a nightmare to say the least. Having been to Atlantis several times before it has gone down hill over the years & it shows. if you have never been there before you will love it unless you need use the bathroom. The staff on the Empress were very friendly, helpful and informative. I am glad we traveled with them and will travel with them again soon. I DO RECOMMEND purchasing the drink packages (if you're going to drink more than four drinks a day) three days prior to boarding. We did but some othes did not and the price jumped $21 dollars a day per person in the cabin purchased day of cruise on the ship. I DO RECOMMEND trying out the stateroom service at least once while on the trip. I DO RECOMMEND getting out to the pool area early to save a chair in the sun. I ALSO RECOMMEND eating at the Starlight lounge. We ate there three times during our four nights and loved the food selection. *Surf and Turf was awesome! I DO RECOMMEND visiting Niki and Kamlesh (Kam) in the Schooner on deck 5. I don't believe there isn't a drink that those two can't make. Ask Niki to sing for you at least once before you leave. Remind Kam that $20 tippers sit to the right of the bar. (per Paul &Kristi). Lastly, when in Nassau try a snorkling excursion with Jake and Bing. They are located next to pier ( to the right) once outside the shopping area in port. Two very nice younger guys. With a center counsel boat. Took us out for two hours sight seeing and snorkling by Paradise Island for $50 per person. Enjoy you trip!!!! Read Less

Got a great deal, but truly in this case you get what you pay for. Small ship, only a little single saltwater pool. 1 out of every 3 or 4 deck chairs has broken bands that make it very uncomfortable. Food is great, we had one server that was very slow but the others were fantastic. Child care is a small room for 3 and over, but staff inside did a great job. He wanted to go, and when I would check on him the staff was engaged in playing with him and he was having fun. He liked the staff so much when he would see them on the ship later he would run up to them to greet them. Maintenance is really getting behind, and you can see it everywhere - miscelleneous washers to hold things up, missing brackets or fixtures, an oversized bolt with a head on it to hold the door handle in place, rust bubbles that are just painted over, etc. Don't really affect the operation of the ship, but just show the direction it is going. It was a cruise with my partner and two members of family. The ship was agreable and the cabin was small, old but clean. Entertainement at Royal Theater was very interesting. The other bars was not very funny...On the karaoke night, a little girl of 6 years old was singing and it was not really interesting for adults. and the service was very slow at the bars. Activities on the ship at the pool could be more interesting if they could show the activities on the screen because it would be easier to see what is going on when we are not close to the activities around the pool. The arrival and departure was very well organized and we didn't have to wait a long time. All of us would like to go again on the Empress of the seas because it was not expensive and we had good time. Read Less

I have frequently taken the RCCL Majesty of the Seas on the 3 day weekend cruise and have always loved that ship. Now that that ship isn't available out of Miami anymore, I was pleased to see the Empress of the Seas is now available. Several things made this ship better. First and foremost - Non-Smoking Casino!!! Also, some very nice seating areas around the pool (I am not comfortable on lounge chairs and have always wished there were more sitting chairs, and this ship has several areas, one in the middle, shaded, with very comfortable chairs and some small tables; as well as many tables and chairs in shaded areas, and a coffee/water/ice cream station outside as well). A hidden gem is the Boleros Lounge - great atmosphere, very comfortable seating, great bar -- and a great place to watch the sunset (when heading somewhat due east). I do wish they featured more varied music, rather than just latin (but it is Cuban-themed, after all). The food was extremely good, the best I have had on RCCL, and the entertainment was terrific. The itinerary was also great, as we had a day at sea rather than Cococay (which again has very little seating other than the very uncomfortable lounge chairs), and it was 4 days rather than 3 (which is sooooo much nicer). The cabins are still small, though, and they don't have the shelves in the closet. Tip: I found out too late that you are permitted to take one bottle of wine per person, with no corkage fee. This must be new, as I never saw that before. Read Less
