We arrived in Paris two days before departure and went to the Palace of Versailles. It was spectacular! On Friday we were picked up at our hotel and brought right to our cruise ship. It was the maiden voyage of the Kadlin. The crew were there to meet us, offering us warm, moist towels to clean our hands. Our luggage was brought right to our rooms. Our 21 year old daughter traveled with us. We were a little concerned that the cruise might be too old for her. Not to worry. She met several other twenty-somethings and had a blast. She actually turned 21 on the ship and they brought out a cake with sparklers and sang. The ship had everything we could want. The room was well appointed and comfortable. We had a French balcony which was really nice. Our daughter had a standard room and while she didn't have a great view, she spent most of her time in the lounge. The only downside was the weather. It was very cool and overcast. We didn't spend much time up on the top deck. We are definitely going again and placed a deposit down for our next cruise. Would highly recommend Viking River Cruises. I took my three daughters on the "new" Kadlin in March 2016 to Paris and Normandy. We had a marvelous time. The personnel of Viking were truly superior - everyone was pleasant and ready to assist in any way possible. I either lost or had stolen my credit card. When discovered, I reported it to the concierge who immediately took care of the problem without hesitation; I was very thankful AND impressed! The trip was magnificent! The food was tremendous, the service was outstanding and the excursions were both informative and a pleasurable experience. The nightly lounge meetings were so informative and so much fun! Everyone involved on our trip had a great time and my daughters and I cannot wait to go on our next trip in May 2017 on the RHINE GET AWAY. I definitely recommend VIKING RIVER CRUISES to all - They also have ocean cruises too that I bet are fantastic! Read Less

I traveled with my oldest son on The Kadlin to Paris & The heart of Normandy as a pre-celebration of my 55th birthday. Previous to booking, we had gone back and forth over taking the cruise or just traveling on our own as we usually do. Finally, we agreed it might be nice to just step aboard and let everything be taken care of for us. It was absolutely the best decision, the cruise was wonderful, from the moment we stepped on board. Starting with our room, which was perfect, we had a Veranda suite, this allowed us room to move about. The Chef on board was exceptional, every meal was a special treat. I loved the ports we stopped in, and having the headsets allowing us to follow at our on pace and still hear them as they told us about the area. Looking forward to many more trips with Viking. The crew that took care af the cabins took there job to heart and keeper the cabin clean and well stocked with towels and soap when needed. The cruise was more than I expected in all ways. The room was very comfortable; the employees were extremely courteous and delightfully personable; the food was excellent with excellent service including servers remembering preferences; the Seine was interesting to watch-especially the swans and ducks; the tours informtive and the Program Director constantly available and checking to make sure everyone was comfortable, safe, and enjoying themselves. The other guests were varied and interesting to talk with about their travels and lives. Just watching the ship go through the locks was an interesting andeducational experience by itself. The Captain was amazing and the crew informative about the ship. The Chef was an artist and his galley fun and informative to visit. Even the guest artist who taught us to watercolor was talented and personable and made us feel like accomplished artists in one lessons. The Viking employees who met us at the airport, and took us to the airport as well as the lovely lady who helped us from the hotel during out three day extension were protective and efficient and made us feel safe as we explored a new country, They even made the demonstrations we avoided seem interesting and non-threatening. A brand new longship. A brand new French chief. A brand new amazing experience. I sailed on Viking years ago. the ship was nice the Rhine is always beautiful. This trip was completely different experience. The cabin was more than comfortable, with heated bathroom floors, Freya products, extra large towels, soft robes and slippers, down comforters, heavenly pillows and gentle sailing down the Seine. Pure heaven. The food was excellent in every aspect. The cabin veranda, perfect! The dinning room has floor to ceiling windows, as most areas on the long ship. Service was the best I have had on any of my previous forty six cruises. All shore excursion are included in the cost of the cruise, as are wine, beer and soft drinks with dinner and lunch. specialty coffee is always available and always free.. Embarkation and disembarkation are effortless. A fresh bottle of water is place in your stateroom each day. All movies are free of charge and a joy to watch on a forty inch flat screen. This was one of the most amazing trips I have taken. The entire Viking experience was excellent. From the moment we were met at the airport by a Viking rep to the end of the trip when another rep took us into the airport to check in, the customer service in all areas was exemplary. The food aboard the ship was extremely tasty; the housekeeping service was unsurpassed, and the services of the concierge, the social director, the entire crew, and the captain himself were above and beyond what I had expected. The excursions were informative and educational without ever being boring. Exploration of Paris after the cruise was fun and worth the extra fees. Embarcation and disembarkation were very facilitating. I loved the small ship and camaraderie of the crew with the passengers. Our every need was attended to. The smallest details were unexpected: providing umbrellas when rain was forecast, serving hot chocolate when we returned from a shore excursion on a cold day, providing cold cider on a hot day, giving us ample free time. The trip was worth every penny. Read Less

Wanted to see Paris and some of the french countryside. But the main reason for choosing this cruise was to go to Normandy. The tour of Normandy was good but way too short. we were able to see the Hi lites, but not enough time to explore the museum and see the films. Also would liked to spend more time at the memorial and try to find the graves of people from our state and town. Would liked to have been docked in Paris so we could see more of the city in our free time. Could have used a couple of days in the city to see more of the sights. I know this was a 7 day cruise and we did enjoy the tours we took. The ship and staff were excellent. The food was Excellent and plenty of it!. We started our trip in a small port outside of Paris. The ship was very new. Our room was on the main deck and was outstanding there is no need to pay the extra for an upgraded room as ours was everything needed. The beds were very comfortable and even the bath floors were heated. The crew did EVERYTHING possible to meet our needs. Sailing was smooth (I tend to be motion sick) and I had no trouble at all. We are already planning our next cruise with Viking. We passed several other river ships but none compared to our ship. I HIGHLY recommend Viking Cruises in every way. Before sailing, I had multiple people tell us that Viking was outstanding and they did not exaggerate in any way. I have traveled to Europe 3 times and Viking will be my preferred method of travel from now on. We were advised before the trip to do the included tours and then decide what optional tours to do. Although we did book a few tours before hand, we did take advantage of those included through our trip. Everything was well organized and the guides were interesting and knowledgeable. Finally, I would not hesitate to book another Viking tour. I'm sure we were very lucky to sail on such a new long boat but I'm sure they are all very nice. Lastly, we all purchased a voucher to be used toward our next trip. The only hard decision will be deciding where to go. Thank you Viking and expect to see me again. Read Less

Staff were truly amazing. Food and wine were great. Service was outstanding. Everything was taken care of for the passengers from the time we landed at the Paris airport until we were back at the airport going thru the security check in. One never had to worry about anything. The daily activities on and off the ship were "first class" in every way. Our stops along the Sein could not have been any better. We highly recommend VRC adventures to family and friends. We had been on a Danube River Cruise with Viking years ago and we really enjoyed our vacation - everything was first class - food, service, accommodations, etc. Therefore, we decided to go on a Paris/Normandy trip this time around and we had such a wonderful time on the river cruise - along with the 3 day Paris extension - all through Viking with transfers included - Viking made our trip very easy for us! The food and service is just fabulous; the day trips - which are included in the price - were educational and fun; the ship was lovely - and the cabins are comfortable. The top deck has a track so you can get some exercise each day or you can sit and enjoy the sailing. The sights along the river are just beautiful - the homes, towns, churches are so lovely. Before dinner each evening, Viking staff discussed the following day's planned excursions - where we were going and what we would be seeing, etc. There was nothing that you would want or need. In Paris, we especially loved the illumination of the city in the evening - we felt ALL lit up - just like Paris itself! Viking river cruises more than met our expectations and we plan to take another Viking cruise next year - this will be our THIRD! Read Less

Our first River Cruise. We had a group of 6 adults aging from 34 to 69. All of us absolutely loved this trip and experience. Everything about the trip is 5 star. One of the best crews that we have ever had on a cruise!!! The pre-cruise stay in Paris was also excellent and it was great to have the Viking guide available in the hotel. Transportation to and from the airport was extremely easy in Paris with the help of the Viking guide. They helped with our luggage and also guided us through the "maze" at the airport. In case there are middle age tourists who are "afraid" that the crowd will be too old: We were told that River Cruises only had "old" people as guests, so we were actually expecting the majority of the cruisers to be even older than we were. We found that while many were our age (mostly in the 60's), there was a variety of ages on board. I do think our son (34 yr old) was the youngest passenger; however, many of the crew, including the captain, were younger than he was. Even at his young age, he thoroughly enjoyed everything about the cruise! This type of cruise is probably not great for younger childen, but definitely is great for anyone over 18. Read Less

We selected this cruise on the recommendation of our travelling companions. My wife and I have cruised extensively, but never a "river" cruise. As we are now retired, we also wanted to check a few things off the "bucket list" and Paris was high on the list. The travel from Eastern USA to Paris was lengthy. As we arrived on the day of embarkation, we brought with us a fair amount of jet lag. Next time we will make the time to spend 2-3 days at our destination first. Viking has such programs available, but we were unable to synch it with our fellow travelers. The reception and boarding were fuss-free. The Kadlin is a small but well appointed tri-deck ship that is well designed and easily accommodates the 320 or so passengers. As we cruised north to Normandy, the pace was slow and easy and the ride was smooth. Scenery was spectacular. The (included) excursions were well run and quite enriching. Our visits to Paris (day and night), Rouen, Les Andelys, Vernon (Monet's garden at Ginverny) and especially the Normandy beaches made indelible memories. The food was excellent and, of course, included in the fare...as was a fairly good wine selection with meals. The cruise director and his staff were friendly, very approachable and professional. The cabin and balcony was about the same size as we were used to on ocean cruises. Entertainment was good - but the aforementioned jet lag made us less than "party animals" the first 2-3 nights. The atmosphere of the ship was sedate - no kids and most passengers were retirees like us. This isn't Carnival.... The only "issue" we had was not Viking's fault. The tour of Versailles was cancelled at the last minute due to a French employee strike. I am given to understand that such actions are as frequent as rain there. The cruise director offered instead to bring us to Montserrat - which excited both myself and my bride - but the tour members on the bus "voted" to return to the ship. Instead, we spent the day in a local suburb of Paris and actually had a great time touring the local scene - but I would have rather seen Montserrat. Oh well. All in all, I will cruise again with Viking. Indeed, we are heading out to the Caribbean on an ocean cruise with them next month. These folks know their business and value your time and your patronage. Although I would expect no less, I rarely see it on many of the cruise lines I have used. Well done, gents. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it offered so many of the locations we wanted to experience. We were celebrating our 25th Anniversary and wanted to see Paris. We also wanted to visit Normandy and Monet's Gardens. Every excursion was well planned and the guides were local and terrific. We visited a farm in the French countryside that made apple brandy and cider. We had samples and the owner served an apple tart - it was great and we were so glad we added this excursion. Normandy was such an emotional experience. Viking had arranged a special ceremony for us to place a rose on one of the graves. We were able to find Georgia soldiers and honor them. We were also able to get sand from Omaha Beach. We were so glad we were able to visit this site. Monet's Garden was so beautiful. We could understand how Monet was so inspired by this place to paint such beautiful works. We felt we got the "royal treatment" when we returned from excursions. The staff served warm drinks or special concoctions as we boarded the ship. A very special treat for us was being able to visit a church where Rollo was buried. He was the Duke of Normandy and my husband's 22nd Great Grandfather. This was arranged by the Program Director and was a surprise to us. This was very meaningful to my husband. We would highly recommend Viking - they provide exceptional service! Read Less

The crew of our ship were extremely knowledgable and helpful. France always seems to throw you a curveball, for instance,When we got to Versailles the folks went on strike. Without missing a beat we were given other options. We simply chose to spend the day exploring the lovely town where we were docked. It turned out to be a perfect situation. We LOVED the food and the attention to detail. I would also like to mention the quality of the tour guides they were ABSOLUTLEY amazing. We spent lots of time in LePecq, a suburb of Paris so the excitement of Paris nite life wasn't anywhere around. We were notified of this change well after we booked. We spent 3 days prior to embarkation at the Hotel Rochester in Paris and it was delightful. The trip to Normandy was especially touching and I will be forever glad for this moment. The staff were excellent and quite professional. The food was a little above average, surprising i thought as the reviews we read raved about it. Havinf flight and shuttles included gave less time figuring things out, more time enjoying! Even daily included guided yours made it so easy and gave my brain the extra time to take in all I was seeing, hearing and tasting. I did think the onboa d evening entertainment was not the quality of other amenities. I liked that local people sometimes provided, but perhaps some time foe them to have a mic to tell of their life at that site, so more human interest from the locals. Food choices, delivery and taste were wonderful, and I liked having local taste influence our offerings. Thank you. Read Less

We were interested in seeing Paris and the Normandy Beaches. Had never been to either of the locations before. We were somewhat disappointed in Paris but enjoyed the rest of the trip immencely. The food was not quite up to par with previous experiences but it was understandable being a new ship and crew. We found the French people to not be as warm and friendly as all the residents of other countries we have visited with Viking and other tour companies. This includes Australia,China,Russia and many others. The fact that we did not dock directly in Paris was quite disappointing and resulted in wasted time commuting between the ship and the city. Maybe if we had known this before booking the trip we would have gone with a different company. Viking has too much competition these days to make these mistakes. Perhaps the ship is too large for this tour. Never the less,we will travel with Viking again if the itinerary interests us. Read Less

Quality of service, tours and boat. We have traveled with Viking before and chose to go again. We had exceptional food, were offered shorter walking tours and activities as well. The boat has lots of space and we like the moving round from table to table for meals to meet more people. The side trip to Normandy Beach was especially important as my father had landed in the same area during WWII. There was additional time at port in Paris in which we were able to connect with our German daughter (exchange student) and walk the streets of Paris. We are not shoppers who need additional items but did enjoy seeing outdoor markets, small villages and places for lunch or a drink. The staff was well organized and the processes for getting on/off the board were smooth. We had added the option of airport pick-up and delivery which went well. We have marked off one of our bucket list items with the Monet garden tour and village. Absolutely as we pictured. Bus drivers were friendly and informative. It should be emphasized that personnel in wheel chairs and walkers will have very difficult time. Read Less

The Paris to Normandy cruise highlighted many of the places we wanted to see in France. We enjoyed Monet's gardens at Giverny, seeing the Bayeux Tapestry, visiting the Normandy Beaches and cemeteries, seeing a castle of Richard the Lionhearted (after the climb up we were also lionhearted),seeing Versailles, Malmaison and Josephine's gardens, touring the Louvre, enjoying the Eiffel Tower at night, visiting a working farm in Normandy and touring charming cities. We had different guides for each excursion and their individual personalities were very interesting and refreshing. The food aboard ship was outstanding and the variety excellent. The French wines offered were also every bit as wonderful as we had heard. On ship we enjoyed a watercolor class and were offered tours of the ship with the chef and captain. The staff was kind and helpful. We highly recommend this tour and the Viking Company. We also booked the 3 day Paris extension at the end of the cruise. We felt the guides made us ready to take on the city itself . Our hotel The Rochester was excellent with a very helpful staff. We were able to see the Louvre again, Museum D'Orsay, Le Orangerie and Monet's water lilies, The Shakespeare and Company Bookstore, Monmartre and Sacre Coeur, Saint Chappelle and a little shopping and dining out at a variety of eateries. My limited high school French helped us have two visits with French natives who spoke a little English. Viking was helpful every step of the way from reservations to return, even helping us check in at the large Charles de Gaulle Airport at the end of our stay in Paris. A great experience. I would have rated this cruise as excellent except that our port of embarkation was changed at the lat minute. Instead of leaving from Paris, we were relegated to a port in Le Pecq and were denied the numerous advantages of being in Paris before and after cruising. This was a major disappointment and, frankly, we believe that we should have received some sort of refund for the inconvenience of being in Le Pecq. Other than this, the cruise experience was wonderful. The ship, food, and service were all excellent and made for a great experience. The visit to Versailles was disappointing but that was largely due to the strike that was occurring and resulted in us entering the facility late. This made for a rushed and crowded tour that was not at all worth the $149 that each of us paid for the experience. The tour in Le Pecq was just a time filler and added little to the overall tour experience. Read Less
