This was our third Viking River Cruise (previously did 7 day Rhine and 7 day Danube, both of which I cannot recommend highly enough). Viking does an outstanding job, somethings I wish I had taken into consideration before leaving (which are completely out of Viking's control). 1. Our cruise began on the Thursday before Easter, this led to crowds and closures at various points of our trip. 2. In preparation for the 2024 Olympic games, Paris has construction projects taking place everywhere, traffic getting in and out of the heart of the city is absolutely dreadful (this from someone born and raised in Los Angeles) 3. Another factor for crowds, a European explained to me, springtime is when many school children take field trips to various locations. 4. Finally, the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral led to increased tourist traffic at other locations. The Viking staff from booking to final departure were fantastic. We did not take the extension on either side of the trip, but booked our flight to arrive in Paris in the late morning. This allowed us to get our bags on the boat and spend several hours at the Louvre, which otherwise (due to other booked excursions) we would not have been able to see. Embarkation was great, the ship staff are outstanding. Excursion highlights, we took every included excursion (except those that conflicted with paid excursions) - several stops (after leaving Paris) include houses built in the Middle Ages that are incredible to see (Vernon and Rouen). Monet's Garden is beautiful. Out of Rouen we paid for the Farm and Country Tour which was a nice view of the Normandy country side, the farm is a neat experience. The excursion to the beaches of Normandy will leave you with a sense of profound gratitude for the soldiers of the D-Day Invasion. Having studied the history, then touring the site, I still cannot fathom the courage of the men that day. Paris at night was a treat, especially seeing the Eiffel Tower lit up at night. Our cabin steward Filip was great, the room was always perfect. I've seen other reviews where people complain of the size of the cabin, it is not spacious, but sufficient. The only time we are in our cabin is basically to sleep. I cannot speak to the entertainment options in the lounge in the evening, we never attended. We try to stay in town as long, doing as much as we can, after dinner, we're ready for bed. Several people we talked to mentioned the different events were a good time. The food is always top notch and the dining staff attentive to your orders and requests. The guides at each of the locations are always outstanding, usually locals who give you some much more than a guide who read a book about where you are going. At the tour in Versailles, it was absolutely packed, (literally shoulder to shoulder, front to back with people in some rooms), almost impossible. Our guide (I forgot her name) went out of her way trying to keep us together, inform us about the artwork, history, etc, and made the most out of the trip, she was phenomenal there. We will undoubtedly taking Viking again (Portugal, Rhine at Christmas, and the Norwegian Fjords for starters). It was the crowds that took the shine off this trip for us. So if that is an issue for you, the Fall would probably be a better time to book this trip. Read Less

We really enjoyed our time on the Viking Kadlin and the itinerary to Normany. Visiting Normandy was truly a humbling experience. Meeting fellow passengers was delightful and the guided tours were superb. Our only disappointment was the quality of the food at dinner. Maybe because it was the last cruise of the season on the Kadlin but it seemed like we were served a lot of leftovers and not exciting menus. We will definitely sail on Viking again and look forward to experiencing more exciting itineraries and hopefully an improved menu. Our veranda suite was great and our cabin attendant was excellent. As it was cold and raining many days we did not have the opportunity to enjoy our balcony very often. We would probably just save some money and reserve just a veranda cabin or even an river view as the lounge areas are very accommodating to all the passengers. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted a new cruising experience. We had always been on big ships, in big ports, and wanted a change up. Viking delivered on that change. The Kadlin was a beautiful ship and very comfortable. The staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. Our cabin steward was incredible! The true winner of this cruise is the ports. For me, Rouen turned out to be the true gem. The city was beautiful and charming, the food was delicious, the people were so kind and friendly, and there was so much to see and do. The excursions were all so wonderful. I highly recommend the walking tour in Le Pecq after you board. It turned out to be one of my favorites! The castle is absolutely stunning and the gardens are unlike I've ever seen. If you do the Paris by Night Tour you wont be able to get many pictures. The tour is given in a closed bus and the glare from the windows ruin any type of picture, which was disappointing for me. I thought that I (and my 16 year old) might find river cruising a little slow, but with all the excursions they had planned, and activities on the boat, we never had a second to be become bored. Despite the brutal heat wave and high humidity we experienced, the cruise was an incredible experience and I highly recommend anyone curious about river cruising to give it a chance! Read Less

This is our third Viking River Cruise. We enjoyed the food and wine on this cruise. We also thought the captain and the cruise director were brilliant and fun. More importantly, the excursions were well organized with knowledgeable tour guides (particularly Leif). Our only disappointment on this cruise was “the early bird” special mentality of the passengers. Guests rushed for the dining room frantically and grabbed the window tables. After say 2 hours, the waiters started to rush people out of the restaurant to clean up the dining room. On other cruises, we have had flexibility to tour a museum and arrive at dinner between 8 and 8:15 p.m. at a more leisurely pace. It was odd. The cabins are tiny, but housekeeping was excellent. Indeed, the housekeepers work from morning to evening and supplies are attentively replenished daily. Definitely take the tour of the wheelhouse. The captain is so charming when he tells how everything works. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of it's ports of call. It had everything I was interested in seeing in this part of France. The service, food and accommodations were outstanding. This was the second Viking Cruise I have been on and it was better than the first. I found the food, service and entertainment to be excellent. The ports were just as I expected them to be and the guides were very good. No stone was left upturned. The shopping was good and such a good time was had by all in out party. The enrichment options were very good and lent to the over all experience of the trip. And the ship, the ship was clean and well managed. Not a spot seemed out of place. The experience was relaxing as you were always able to find a place to just soak up the scenery. I know there will be a third cruise with Viking sometime soon. Read Less

This was a birthday celebration. I have wanted to get back to Paris for many years and my wife had never been there. This looked like a good way to do it. We had been looking at Viking material for quite a while. It seemed the time was right. Hard to say anything negative about the onboard experience or the support we received to get to the ship and then back to the airport. Exceeded our expectations. The tour guides we had were outstanding. But, if we do it again we might not do as many of the tours since they often involved a fair amount of time on a bus. I think I would opt for spending time in the small town ports or get the bus into Paris when in that area. Not that the tours were bad - they were outstanding. I just wasn't prepared for the amount of time we would be on the bus. We took all of them thinking it would maximize our time. I should have been a little more particular and spent more time off the bus. The food was wonderful and I can't say enough about the crew. Everyone was attentive and pleasant. The small number of passengers was a plus. Made some new friends and it always felt like the ship was our home. Joel, our advisor when making the reservations was also excellent. I did suggest to him that he make sure people who take this cruise fully understand what is involved with each tour so they can make a good decision. We will definitely do a Viking cruise again someday. Lots of places we would like to see and I really liked the idea of cruising on the river. Very enjoyable. Read Less

The cruise was beautiful and the side trips was wonderful. The Normandy trip was particularly heartwarming. I had a number of uncles who were in the invasion during D-day. The American Cemetery and the landing on Omaha beach brought tears to my eyes. The food was very good, but needed more French food. The service was exceptional. However, the room was very tight with almost no room to move. The trips to Monet's gardens and the Heart of Normandy were not for those who have any difficulty walking. I got a wheelchair and felt embarrassed because I could walk but I was too slow. The trip did not leave from Paris. So when we got off the train and logged out our luggage, we tried to get a cab to take us to the location of the cruise ship. No one knew where the location was, including the cab drivers because it was not in Paris. Anyone going on this cruise absolutely arrange from transportation from Paris and back, if needed. Read Less

The good: The ship is beautiful. The food was good to very good. The crew was efficient and personable. The itinerary alternated between early days and sleep-in days. There was a good mix of sailing during the day to enjoy the stunning views and sailing at night for efficiency. The heated bathroom floor was really nice. Refrigerator in the cabin. I enjoyed all of the ports. The bad: The beds were very firm - too firm for me to sleep well. Though it's an option, the French Balcony cabin was not large enough for a twin bed configuration. I don't think the beds were twin sized, they felt like toddler beds. I ended up having to upgrade to my own cabin (luckily available) because the cabin was just too small for my dad and me. There are no tables smaller than six ppl in the dining room. I think Viking needs to provide at least a few two seater tables. The wine included was usually Chardonnay or Merlot and neither were very good. The bathroom nightlight (which can't be turned off) and other power buttons glowed at night which was frustrating. And finally, the ship does not dock in Paris as other cruise lines do. Viking is a solid choice but I'd also check into other cruise lines if I had to do it over. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the history of WWII and the Normandy Beaches. But it was so much more! The Excursions were the best, being disabled I rarely am able to see places except for in the buses. The tour guides were excellent, easy to understand and using the sound boxes made listening very easy. From Monet's Garden to Rouen's Joan of Arc each step of the way was even more interesting. My wife is retired Army and the ceremony at the American Cemetery was very well done and emotional. the Food was very good and pastries were fresh each morning you couldn't wait to get up! Our room is the same on each boat heated bathroom floors and everything you need provided. The TV had been upgraded since our last cruise and many more selections added. The on board entertainment was really an excellent piano player. Not you ship if you want entertainment. We stayed in Paris 2 nights following the cruise, we were shown how to use the subway ah so easy and clean. The Hotel was next to many great bakeries and restaurants. Great shopping! When it was time to go to the airport they picked us up in a Jaguar! All went very smoothly, looking forward to another adventure! Read Less

I would have rated this cruise as excellent except that our port of embarkation was changed at the lat minute. Instead of leaving from Paris, we were relegated to a port in Le Pecq and were denied the numerous advantages of being in Paris before and after cruising. This was a major disappointment and, frankly, we believe that we should have received some sort of refund for the inconvenience of being in Le Pecq. Other than this, the cruise experience was wonderful. The ship, food, and service were all excellent and made for a great experience. The visit to Versailles was disappointing but that was largely due to the strike that was occurring and resulted in us entering the facility late. This made for a rushed and crowded tour that was not at all worth the $149 that each of us paid for the experience. The tour in Le Pecq was just a time filler and added little to the overall tour experience. Read Less

We were interested in seeing Paris and the Normandy Beaches. Had never been to either of the locations before. We were somewhat disappointed in Paris but enjoyed the rest of the trip immencely. The food was not quite up to par with previous experiences but it was understandable being a new ship and crew. We found the French people to not be as warm and friendly as all the residents of other countries we have visited with Viking and other tour companies. This includes Australia,China,Russia and many others. The fact that we did not dock directly in Paris was quite disappointing and resulted in wasted time commuting between the ship and the city. Maybe if we had known this before booking the trip we would have gone with a different company. Viking has too much competition these days to make these mistakes. Perhaps the ship is too large for this tour. Never the less,we will travel with Viking again if the itinerary interests us. Read Less

People onboard were friendly, smart, well traveled and easy to converse with. Met peope I'd like to stay in touch with forever. Havinf flight and shuttles included gave less time figuring things out, more time enjoying! Even daily included guided yours made it so easy and gave my brain the extra time to take in all I was seeing, hearing and tasting. I did think the onboa d evening entertainment was not the quality of other amenities. I liked that local people sometimes provided, but perhaps some time foe them to have a mic to tell of their life at that site, so more human interest from the locals. Food choices, delivery and taste were wonderful, and I liked having local taste influence our offerings. Thank you. Read Less

to see Paris and Normandy. Cruise was done well in all aspects except there wasn't much cruising. We spent lots of time in LePecq, a suburb of Paris so the excitement of Paris nite life wasn't anywhere around. We were notified of this change well after we booked. We spent 3 days prior to embarkation at the Hotel Rochester in Paris and it was delightful. The trip to Normandy was especially touching and I will be forever glad for this moment. The staff were excellent and quite professional. The food was a little above average, surprising i thought as the reviews we read raved about it. I became sick on the first day aboard and the Cruise Director, Lionel, went well above and beyond duty to connect me with a local doctor and help get the necessary medications. Because of his help the trip went off smoothly. I would gladly sail with Viking again. Read Less

Wanted to see Paris and some of the french countryside. But the main reason for choosing this cruise was to go to Normandy. The tour of Normandy was good but way too short. we were able to see the Hi lites, but not enough time to explore the museum and see the films. Also would liked to spend more time at the memorial and try to find the graves of people from our state and town. Would liked to have been docked in Paris so we could see more of the city in our free time. Could have used a couple of days in the city to see more of the sights. I know this was a 7 day cruise and we did enjoy the tours we took. The ship and staff were excellent. The food was Excellent and plenty of it!. Our cabin was very comfortable and always cleaned when we were away. Read Less
