This was my husband's first trip to Europe. It was thoroughly delightful. He was in seventh heaven with every historical venue from the Arch de Triomphe to the Normandy Beaches. The room was extremely nice, the food was exquisite, the service was superb. The only disappointment was the amount of time we had to tour Versailles with the group. We could have used at least another hour at the site. However, Napolean's Chateau later that afternoon was grand !! Given the proximity of those two sites...we should have lunched nearby instead of going back to the ship for lunch. That would have given us much more time at Versailles. Not only would we love to sail the Seine again but we have already booked the Rhine Getaway for next year..with a couple that we met on the Seine cruise. Thank you Viking for our 1st Grand Adventure !! There will be more ! Read Less

Viking cruises always look so wonderful on the commercials so we decided to take one. We were not disappointed! Every last detail was taken care of from the moment we left the airport. We were greeted with a warm towel upon our arrival onto the ship and it just got better from there. The staff was wonderful-so friendly and eager to help with any question or concern. The ship was beautiful and clean. Our cabin was spacious and the housekeeping staff did an awesome job at keeping it spotless. The activities on the ship were great. Our program director, Lionel, gave a daily briefing on what we could expect on our next excursion as well as his humorous take on river boat sailing. He was great! We really liked learning about the cities and towns where we docked. We also liked the exposure to the culture of France, from the cheese tasting to the French singing group to the informative talks. The menu also highlighted dishes from Normandy. All of the food was ample and delicious. Our chef was superb and the wait staff is amazing!! All of the ports we visited were spectacular! The audio devices that are provided really make the sightseeing that much better. All of our tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We definitely recommend Viking to everyone who asks about our vacation. We have already booked another one for next year!! Thanks, Viking, for an unforgettable vacation! Read Less

Rooms ready for us, meals top notch, stall as friendly and competent as could be.The room was extremely comfortable. I was quite taken with the heated bathroom floors! The entertainment was top quality. Great singers on one night. The Cruise Director, a native of Normandy, was superb. He had marvelous stories. We were taken from CDG to our ship's alternate dock rapidly and boarded with no problem. Our shore trips were great and went off with no trouble. the group system worked well, as the guides were very knowledgeable. Visiting the Normandy beaches has been on our "bucket list" for a long time. Were very impressed with you trip and the way it was handled. We enjoyed all the aspects of the tours and ship immensely and would look forward to another trip. We have just now to decide which one! Read Less

We did not want to do a cruise with hundreds of people and Viking offered something smaller and more intimate with a great reputation to support it. From what we had read and heard from friends, Viking was the best choice and we were not disappointed. The ship, staff and experience was beyond all of our expectations. From the moment we arrived we felt that this was what we were looking for as a vacation experience. Viking focused on what our needs were, we were able to personalize our experience and do as much or as little as we desired. Our fellow guests were friendly and people we truly enjoyed spending our time with, many of whom traveled with Viking in the past. We plan to vacation in the future with this wonderful company. Europe has so many opportunities we plan to explore using Viking as our tour guide to the many adventures that await us. Read Less

We chose a Viking cruise from Paris to Normandy to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and to experience the opulence of Paris and the history of WWII. We experienced so much more than that. We gained a better understanding of Medieval, Renaissance, Directoire and Modern French culture. The Kadlin was a recently commissioned, comfortable, immaculate, beautiful ship that felt very much like we were cruising on a friend's personal yacht. Staff and crew could not have been more gracious and accommodating. Many of the staff new us by our names halfway into the trip. As we approached the lounge nightly, our bartender would have my martini and my wife's wine on the bar by the time we reached it. Fabulous meals morning, noon and night--each day reflecting the cuisine of region we were traveling through. Informative tour guides and comfortable motor coaches rounded out a world-class experience. We will surely cruise with Viking again in the future. Read Less

We chose Viking River Cruise because I had heard wonderful things about them from others where I live in Colorado. I wanted to do the Normandy to Paris cruise because my father was a World War II veteran and I wanted to see Normandy and parts of France including Paris. Furthermore, we took an Alaska Cruise tour last year and wife didn't enjoy being at sea, hence the river cruise. The Kadlin was wonderful, a new ship and our verandah stateroom (307)was great- I did spend some time on the balcony enjoying a glass of wine and watching the scenery- the observation deck was also great. I went for walks around its circumference and enjoy a beer or glass of wine while watching the countryside go by. The food was wonderful- all three meals each day. We traveled with some old classmates from Virginia and met another two couples that we shared dinners and tours with making the trip more enjoyable. The evening meals were, well, just excellent, and the wines well matched to the meals, the lamb was great and so was the seafood. We enjoyed the classes on cheeses, cooking and tour through the galley. Being an old Navy vet, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the Captain and seeing the pilot house. The service was also very good, our hotel staff was wonderful and we grew to enjoy our wait staff at the evening meals. The bar staff was also very good. The ports and shore excursions were very good, I would like to have spent more time or seen more of the Normandy beaches but understand the time limitations. The lunch venue was good, lending some local color to the excursion. We really liked our Rouen tour guide ( I wish I remembered her name, but she had studied in Australia, if I remember right). In general, the tour guides were very good and packed with local information and history. The bus tour of Paris was quite good, giving us a taste of Paris which were able to utilize when we spend additional time in Paris. We didn't travel with children, but do feel that this cruise would be appropriate for children in the their teens or older. We would definitely go again and can hardly wait for the next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

The visit to Giverney was wonderful, even though I had been there before and I thoroughly enjoyed the painting class. The garden itself is always changing. Food on the boat was excellent and the staff could not have taken any better care of us. On board entertainment was a lot of fun. Cabins were small of necessity, but very well designed and well appointed. We did not lack for anything! Excursion coaches were roomy and comfortable and overall the guides were knowledgeable. We chose this cruise because my father was a WWII vet and served in the ETO, the other couple that went with us also had a relative that served in the European Theatre of Operatioins and thought the the Paris to Normandy trip would be in honor of their service. Our travel to the embarkation port was especially good in that we made our flight plans with British Airways, and they had cancelled our flights and put us on a later one, we were picked up at the airport in time for the evening meal that night. We had neightboring verandah state rooms with our old friends from Virgina and very miuch enjoyed the cabins and dining on the Kadlin. We had the same table each night at dinner and consequently the same wait staff whom we grew to know and like very much. The tours, and tour guides were excellent, including Giverny, Vernon, Roen and the others. The pre departure tour of Paris was also very good in that it prepared us for the extended stay that we took after the river trip. The time spent as Normandy was well spent, indeed more may have been appreciated, the ceremony honoring the vets, past and those present was particularly touching (I am also a vet). The time spent in Normandy was touching, somber, and enjoyable, the restaurant for lunch was also enjoyable lending some local color to the day. The embarkation and disembarkation were handled very well, indeed all of the logistics (including the ticket takers strike at the Versailles) were beyond reproach. We were blessed with good weather for most of the river cruise, it was cool and rained a little on the first day, and left Paris after a few extra days, just before the floods came. It conclusion, itwas a wonderful river cruise. Read Less

The Paris to Normandy cruise highlighted many of the places we wanted to see in France. We enjoyed Monet's gardens at Giverny, seeing the Bayeux Tapestry, visiting the Normandy Beaches and cemeteries, seeing a castle of Richard the Lionhearted (after the climb up we were also lionhearted),seeing Versailles, Malmaison and Josephine's gardens, touring the Louvre, enjoying the Eiffel Tower at night, visiting a working farm in Normandy and touring charming cities. We had different guides for each excursion and their individual personalities were very interesting and refreshing. The food aboard ship was outstanding and the variety excellent. The French wines offered were also every bit as wonderful as we had heard. On ship we enjoyed a watercolor class and were offered tours of the ship with the chef and captain. The staff was kind and helpful. We highly recommend this tour and the Viking Company. We also booked the 3 day Paris extension at the end of the cruise. We felt the guides made us ready to take on the city itself . Our hotel The Rochester was excellent with a very helpful staff. We were able to see the Louvre again, Museum D'Orsay, Le Orangerie and Monet's water lilies, The Shakespeare and Company Bookstore, Monmartre and Sacre Coeur, Saint Chappelle and a little shopping and dining out at a variety of eateries. My limited high school French helped us have two visits with French natives who spoke a little English. Viking was helpful every step of the way from reservations to return, even helping us check in at the large Charles de Gaulle Airport at the end of our stay in Paris. A great experience. We would travel with Viking again "in a heartbeat". Thank you!! Read Less

Quality of service, tours and boat. We have traveled with Viking before and chose to go again. We had exceptional food, were offered shorter walking tours and activities as well. The boat has lots of space and we like the moving round from table to table for meals to meet more people. The side trip to Normandy Beach was especially important as my father had landed in the same area during WWII. There was additional time at port in Paris in which we were able to connect with our German daughter (exchange student) and walk the streets of Paris. We are not shoppers who need additional items but did enjoy seeing outdoor markets, small villages and places for lunch or a drink. The staff was well organized and the processes for getting on/off the board were smooth. We had added the option of airport pick-up and delivery which went well. We have marked off one of our bucket list items with the Monet garden tour and village. Absolutely as we pictured. Bus drivers were friendly and informative. It should be emphasized that personnel in wheel chairs and walkers will have very difficult time. Read Less

The crew of our ship were extremely knowledgable and helpful. France always seems to throw you a curveball, for instance,When we got to Versailles the folks went on strike. Without missing a beat we were given other options. We simply chose to spend the day exploring the lovely town where we were docked. It turned out to be a perfect situation. We LOVED the food and the attention to detail. I would also like to mention the quality of the tour guides they were ABSOLUTLEY amazing. I highly recommend Viking to everyone and am looking forward to many more excursions in our future. I should also point out,the excursions were ALL very easy and we never felt rushed. We selected this cruise on the recommendation of our travelling companions. My wife and I have cruised extensively, but never a "river" cruise. As we are now retired, we also wanted to check a few things off the "bucket list" and Paris was high on the list. The travel from Eastern USA to Paris was lengthy. As we arrived on the day of embarkation, we brought with us a fair amount of jet lag. Next time we will make the time to spend 2-3 days at our destination first. Viking has such programs available, but we were unable to synch it with our fellow travelers. The reception and boarding were fuss-free. The Kadlin is a small but well appointed tri-deck ship that is well designed and easily accommodates the 320 or so passengers. As we cruised north to Normandy, the pace was slow and easy and the ride was smooth. Scenery was spectacular. The (included) excursions were well run and quite enriching. Our visits to Paris (day and night), Rouen, Les Andelys, Vernon (Monet's garden at Ginverny) and especially the Normandy beaches made indelible memories. The food was excellent and, of course, included in the fare...as was a fairly good wine selection with meals. The cruise director and his staff were friendly, very approachable and professional. The cabin and balcony was about the same size as we were used to on ocean cruises. Entertainment was good - but the aforementioned jet lag made us less than "party animals" the first 2-3 nights. The atmosphere of the ship was sedate - no kids and most passengers were retirees like us. This isn't Carnival.... The only "issue" we had was not Viking's fault. The tour of Versailles was cancelled at the last minute due to a French employee strike. I am given to understand that such actions are as frequent as rain there. The cruise director offered instead to bring us to Montserrat - which excited both myself and my bride - but the tour members on the bus "voted" to return to the ship. Instead, we spent the day in a local suburb of Paris and actually had a great time touring the local scene - but I would have rather seen Montserrat. Oh well. All in all, I will cruise again with Viking. Indeed, we are heading out to the Caribbean on an ocean cruise with them next month. These folks know their business and value your time and your patronage. Although I would expect no less, I rarely see it on many of the cruise lines I have used. Well done, gents. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it offered so many of the locations we wanted to experience. We were celebrating our 25th Anniversary and wanted to see Paris. We also wanted to visit Normandy and Monet's Gardens. Every excursion was well planned and the guides were local and terrific. We visited a farm in the French countryside that made apple brandy and cider. We had samples and the owner served an apple tart - it was great and we were so glad we added this excursion. Normandy was such an emotional experience. Viking had arranged a special ceremony for us to place a rose on one of the graves. We were able to find Georgia soldiers and honor them. We were also able to get sand from Omaha Beach. We were so glad we were able to visit this site. Monet's Garden was so beautiful. We could understand how Monet was so inspired by this place to paint such beautiful works. We felt we got the "royal treatment" when we returned from excursions. The staff served warm drinks or special concoctions as we boarded the ship. A very special treat for us was being able to visit a church where Rollo was buried. He was the Duke of Normandy and my husband's 22nd Great Grandfather. This was arranged by the Program Director and was a surprise to us. This was very meaningful to my husband. We would highly recommend Viking - they provide exceptional service! Read Less

Our first River Cruise. We had a group of 6 adults aging from 34 to 69. All of us absolutely loved this trip and experience. Everything about the trip is 5 star. One of the best crews that we have ever had on a cruise!!! The pre-cruise stay in Paris was also excellent and it was great to have the Viking guide available in the hotel. Transportation to and from the airport was extremely easy in Paris with the help of the Viking guide. They helped with our luggage and also guided us through the "maze" at the airport. In case there are middle age tourists who are "afraid" that the crowd will be too old: We were told that River Cruises only had "old" people as guests, so we were actually expecting the majority of the cruisers to be even older than we were. We found that while many were our age (mostly in the 60's), there was a variety of ages on board. I do think our son (34 yr old) was the youngest passenger; however, many of the crew, including the captain, were younger than he was. Even at his young age, he thoroughly enjoyed everything about the cruise! This type of cruise is probably not great for younger childen, but definitely is great for anyone over 18. Read Less

We had been on a Danube River Cruise with Viking years ago and we really enjoyed our vacation - everything was first class - food, service, accommodations, etc. Therefore, we decided to go on a Paris/Normandy trip this time around and we had such a wonderful time on the river cruise - along with the 3 day Paris extension - all through Viking with transfers included - Viking made our trip very easy for us! The food and service is just fabulous; the day trips - which are included in the price - were educational and fun; the ship was lovely - and the cabins are comfortable. The top deck has a track so you can get some exercise each day or you can sit and enjoy the sailing. The sights along the river are just beautiful - the homes, towns, churches are so lovely. Before dinner each evening, Viking staff discussed the following day's planned excursions - where we were going and what we would be seeing, etc. There was nothing that you would want or need. In Paris, we especially loved the illumination of the city in the evening - we felt ALL lit up - just like Paris itself! Viking river cruises more than met our expectations and we plan to take another Viking cruise next year - this will be our THIRD! Read Less

We started our trip in a small port outside of Paris. The ship was very new. Our room was on the main deck and was outstanding there is no need to pay the extra for an upgraded room as ours was everything needed. The beds were very comfortable and even the bath floors were heated. The crew did EVERYTHING possible to meet our needs. Sailing was smooth (I tend to be motion sick) and I had no trouble at all. We are already planning our next cruise with Viking. We passed several other river ships but none compared to our ship. I HIGHLY recommend Viking Cruises in every way. Before sailing, I had multiple people tell us that Viking was outstanding and they did not exaggerate in any way. I have traveled to Europe 3 times and Viking will be my preferred method of travel from now on. We were advised before the trip to do the included tours and then decide what optional tours to do. Although we did book a few tours before hand, we did take advantage of those included through our trip. Everything was well organized and the guides were interesting and knowledgeable. Finally, I would not hesitate to book another Viking tour. I'm sure we were very lucky to sail on such a new long boat but I'm sure they are all very nice. Lastly, we all purchased a voucher to be used toward our next trip. The only hard decision will be deciding where to go. Thank you Viking and expect to see me again. Read Less
