We really wanted to see the American Memorial in .Normandy, France. Since Viking offered this cruise which included Paris, Monet's Giverny gardens, Rouen and most of the Normandy region. Also enjoyed great scenery in the Seine valley. The dining was great. Foods were fresh and beautifully prepared. Staff is very helpful and always make sure all of your needs are met. Excursions were so interesting and full of knowledgeable information. After the cruise ended, we opted to spend some post-cruise days in the Loire valley. Was so worth it!! We visited chateaus in fine places-Chenonceaux, Amboise and Chambord and the cities of Tours and Orleans. So much beauty, so many nice French folks and such history! This was our second Viking cruise-first was the Romantic Danube-and they have continued to impress us with their service. We've discussed it several times and may even book our next cruise with Viking within the next 2 months! Read Less

The shore excursions and guides were wonderful. A nice variety of guided tours, with very knowledgeable guides. Learned a lot about French history, Impressionism Art and the artists. The American Normandy Military Museum focussed on the Allies building a large port, from simple beachfront, in a week! The earpieces allowed us to hear the guide even 75 yards away. This allowed us to wander a bit, not get lost, and hear everything without needing to be right next to the guide. Each day, water, even umbrellas, were distributed by the crew on debarkation. They thought of everything we could possibly need. Our ship cruised quietly through the Seine River while we enjoyed wonderful dinners, allowing a great view from our moving restaurant. The food was well prepared, and the service was outstanding, by a very pleasant crew. We loved it so much we have signed up for another Viking River Cruise on the Rhine River this fall. Read Less

Special opportunity to see both Monet's gardens and two of the Normandy beaches. The trip was truly a 5-star hotel cruising down the river. Tours particularly of Monet's gardens and of the Normandy beaches were first class. We also enjoyed viewing the ruins of the castle of Richard the Lionhearted. Food was superior with gourmet meals for lunch and dinner. I chose Continental Breakfasts just because I knew the exquisite meals of lunch and dinner with excellent wines were coming up in a few hours. Viking Kadlin is a newer ship. We enjoyed its extras such as the large lounge. A highlight of the trip was visiting the helm and watching the captain give a presentation about the ship while continuing to pilot the boat in the river even as he spoke! Last but not least, if you crave desserts, then the Viking pastry chef made them so that you would want to return to Viking just for the desserts alone. Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking...and each one has been superb. Excellent accommodations, fantastic food, diverse and entertaining places to go, see and do. Viking caters to adult travelers... so don't expect to see young children. There have been several teens on our trips who were well educated and well spoken. We have enjoyed their company. My wife has limited ability to walk, so we travel with a light-weight transporter chair. It was very easy to use the chair on board. The crew assisted every time in getting on and off the ship. The chair was difficult, but possible, in some locations because of cobble stone pavement. At our request, we had a cabin just off the reception area. In that way, we didn't have long walks, or pushes of the wheel chair, to get to and from the cabin. The skipper was the most helpful of any we have experienced. He took a personal approach, greeting folks each time we departed and when we returned. He regularly helped passengers... often passed out water or refreshments. Read Less

From soup to nuts, Viking treats each passenger as a treasured guest. They arrange everything for you from your home airport to your destination and back. They go out of their way to arrange significant touring, educational, and fun activities - it's as if all their tour guides are hand selected for each tour group. As an example, they always had bottled water ready, along with umbrellas if the sky was grey as you disembarked for tours. The cuisine, as this wasn't your ordinary restaurant, was superb. The smaller ships on the river cruises allow for the guests to meet most of the other cruisers and have personal conversations and connections. Viking's attention to detail is unsurpassed. The ships are immaculate and the crew is exceptional, and always friendly and ready to help. We extended our stay in Paris and had a dedicated Viking host at the hotel. She was warm, helpful, and fun to work with. We will sail with Viking again! Read Less

This was my first Viking Cruise and I had many misconceptions of what it would be like. Well, to sum it up, it was fantastic. I brought my 30 year old daughter and we knew we would enjoy being together, but had reservations about our time on the boat. We could not have had more fun. We were impressed with how clean the entire boat was. Our cabin was wonderful and the French Balcony afforded us a beautiful view from our room. We loved the cruise director and enjoyed all of our trips outside of the ship. On the ship, everyone was extremely nice and enjoyed the special drinks from the bartender, as well as, the fantastic piano player. The food was great. We particularly loved the breakfasts and lunches. Plus, being able to have a lighter meal at night was a bonus for us. I enjoyed my trip so much that I have already booked one more trip this year and another next June. Unfortunately my daughter has a job so can't accompany me but all my friends are more than willing to come on a Viking cruise since I have told everyone how much we loved it. Good job Viking! Never had been to Paris before, wanted to experience Normandy & Monet Gardens. Previous cruise on Viking was excellent so we decided to take another. All arrangements were handled by the cruise line including air fair/arrangements and post hotel stay. They do everything first class. The ship was very new and the upkeep was excellent. The cabin size is what you might expect from most other cruise lines. The 3 meals a day have wonderful selections and can be prepared to your liking. The serving staff does everything to make sure you are well satisfied. The shore excursions are excellent and the guides are extremely knowledgeable and share with the guests much information at every point of interest. Our first river cruise was a joy from start to finish. From booking 3 weeks before sailing to our return to the US, the Viking team was excellent. The cruise delivered on everything it promised. The Kadin crew felt like old friends from day one. Our tour guides were full of knowledge so that every day, we learned something new about the port and French region we were in. And the food...it was to die for. We were treated to excellent fare at every meal, again reflecting the local tastes and food history. The dining staff was attentive and accommodating, but not overbearing. They were at your side when you needed them, but not when you didn't. Our boat felt as if it was brand new and our room was so comfortable. Our veranda was the perfect place to take in the countryside as we sailed up and down the Seine. In all, we felt as if we were on afloat a 5-star hotel. Viking will see us again! Read Less

The good: The ship is beautiful. The food was good to very good. The crew was efficient and personable. The itinerary alternated between early days and sleep-in days. There was a good mix of sailing during the day to enjoy the stunning views and sailing at night for efficiency. The heated bathroom floor was really nice. Refrigerator in the cabin. I enjoyed all of the ports. The bad: The beds were very firm - too firm for me to sleep well. Though it's an option, the French Balcony cabin was not large enough for a twin bed configuration. I don't think the beds were twin sized, they felt like toddler beds. I ended up having to upgrade to my own cabin (luckily available) because the cabin was just too small for my dad and me. There are no tables smaller than six ppl in the dining room. I think Viking needs to provide at least a few two seater tables. The wine included was usually Chardonnay or Merlot and neither were very good. The bathroom nightlight (which can't be turned off) and other power buttons glowed at night which was frustrating. And finally, the ship does not dock in Paris as other cruise lines do. Viking is a solid choice but I'd also check into other cruise lines if I had to do it over. Read Less

This was our first river cruise ever. Everything about it was A+ - an absolutely fabulous vacation. I really enjoyed being met at the airport by Viking personnel. Although I have been in and out of De Gaulle airport a number of times, I disliked it each time I have been, except this time when I did not have to hassle with anything other than finding my bags. The guide that we had for both the Louvre and Versailles was so good that I wish I could have taken one of his courses at the college where he teaches in Paris. The food was very, very good - not gourmet (the calories for which I do not need) but very tasty and very well prepared. The onboard teaching (e.g., Joan of Ark, the impressionists, etc.) was very helpful. The facilities on board are not like an ocean cruise ship, not even exercise rooms; but you do not need them as you are not on board much during the day since there are daily excursions. Since returning, we have now booked 2 more future cruises with Viking. Read Less

Truly an all inclusive trip with excellent guides at all locations! Loved the fact that an excursion was planned practically on arrival from the airport. Also enjoyed the fact that there were less than 200 passengers on board; no line up to board tour buses, at breakfast, etc. Cabins, while smaller than on larger cruise ships I've travelled on, we're extremely comfortable. The food was good as was the overall service. Shore excursions included in the cost is a much appreciated perk - it's nice to let the experts make some of the decisions for you. Insights shared by the excellent staff also most welcome. My personal highlight was the visit to Monet's garden in Giverny. Since it was late October, I was pleasantly surprised. Imagine what it must look like in the spring! The visit to the Normandy beaches was awe inspiring (and we were fortunate enough to to have a gentlemen who had actually landed on one of those beaches join our group). Thank you Viking. We chose this cruise for the history of WWII and the Normandy Beaches. But it was so much more! The Excursions were the best, being disabled I rarely am able to see places except for in the buses. The tour guides were excellent, easy to understand and using the sound boxes made listening very easy. From Monet's Garden to Rouen's Joan of Arc each step of the way was even more interesting. My wife is retired Army and the ceremony at the American Cemetery was very well done and emotional. the Food was very good and pastries were fresh each morning you couldn't wait to get up! Our room is the same on each boat heated bathroom floors and everything you need provided. The TV had been upgraded since our last cruise and many more selections added. The on board entertainment was really an excellent piano player. Not you ship if you want entertainment. We stayed in Paris 2 nights following the cruise, we were shown how to use the subway ah so easy and clean. The Hotel was next to many great bakeries and restaurants. Great shopping! When it was time to go to the airport they picked us up in a Jaguar! All went very smoothly, looking forward to another adventure! Read Less

We are both interested in World War 2 history and I am a retired history teacher. We enjoyed Monet's gardens, Rouen and all the castles and churches. I was able to light a candle in 5 churches in memory of my mother who was of French heritage. The food was wonderful and the staff friendly and accommodating. Evening entertainment in the lounge was so much fun and we enjoyed meeting new people in the dining room each evening. Zoe visited the bridge, the kitchen, and had a cooking lesson. First class cruise with 1st class people. We simply just loved, loved, loved the crew! The experience onboard the ship was great in every way. We always felt so comfortable and well taken care of. The food was great with a local influence and the servers in the restaurant although not technically perfect were efficient and personable. The excursions that we went on were well organized … the only comment would be that we would have liked more time at the beaches of Normandy. The reality is that it is there is only so much you can see in one day – if you really want to see everything then you must spend several days there. The ceremony arranged by the ship was a nice touch and made a big impression on us. Overall the tour program was really well organized and the concierge did a great job organizing the tours. The Program Director was also informative, but a little high pitched and too long briefings. All the guides were clear and easy to understand. I would have liked to see an option with a smaller tour group. No complaints about anything. You get what you pay for. Viking is an excellent value for an excellent experience. Go! Now! Read Less

We choose this cruise because we went on the Rhine cruise earlier this summer and enjoyed it very much. It was the first cruise we had ever experienced. Then when we returned from the first cruise, Viking sent an email offering a very nice price on what appeared to be a number of "last minute" bookings. One of them was this Paris to Normandy cruise. We had never been to Paris and looked forward to seeing the D-Day memorial in Normandy. We were not disappointed. The cruise again exceeded our expectations and was thoroughly enjoyable. Once again the accommodations, food, excursions, service, and crew (especially our cruise director- Lionel) were outstanding. There was so much to see and do in Paris, which thanks to Viking planning, was extraordinary. The guided tours were very well done and the guides quite pleasant and knowledgeable. We found equally enjoyable the other smaller town and villages that we stopped at along the Seine on the way to Normandy. Just a great overall experience. We are looking forward to being able to travel with Viking once again. Read Less

This was our first cruise with Viking and we did not know what to expect. I can honestly say that from start to finish Viking really exceeded our expectations. When we disembarked the plane we were met by Viking hosts who whisked us off to our shuttle. We stayed for 3 nights in Paris prior to our cruise and they even had a Viking Concierge at the hotel we stayed at. We booked everything through Viking and it was very seamless. It was well worth the extra expense to stay in Paris because we saw a lot. When it was time to board the ship everything was handled efficiently and we never felt at anytime like Viking dropped the ball in any area. The food onboard was excellent with enough choices and the wine was very good as well. It wasn't top shelf wine, but was more than adequate and they even had regional wines a few nights. The cabin was clean and the French Balcony was worth the extra because it let in a lot of natural light. Cabin wasn't huge but the space was used well. The ship had a nice intimate feel to it and it sort of felt like being on your own private yacht!! Staff went out of their way to make sure you were having a good time. The included excursions were a good way to see the different stops with some time on your own as well. The nighttime entertainment consisted of trivia or piano playing and most times we were so tired we would just go back to our cabin. Dinner would usually be around 7 PM and by the time we were done it was after 9. So we would go to the lounge to grab a drink or simply retire to our cabin. One night they had a cheese tasting and that was fun! It was a very relaxing cruise and a nice departure from the huge cruise ships with thousands of people. Read Less

We have cruised the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii so when our friends called about a good deal on a Viking River cruise in France we were intrigued. It ended the day before our 40th Wedding anniversery. Freinds , Anniversery and value--seemed like it was meant to happen. This was the Paris to Normandy cruise on the Kadlin. The price tag was twice our usual Caribbean cruising and with upfront payment this will probably make River Cruising a special treat not a routine event. We did add the 3 day pre-cruise Paris extension and were glad we made those arrangements. The pre-cruise extension gave more time to explore Paris on our own and recuperate from the flight before the cruise. Our friends who went straight from the airport to the boat were exhausted for the first 2 days. Our Viking Hotel representative noted her observation that those who come before the cruise enjoy the time more than those who stay after the cruise. Those after the cruise are tired from the cruise. We hired our own guide for tours in Paris those three days and used Viking's when we moved to the Kadlin. We went with the Viking Cabaret experience which was very enjoyable. It was a late evening and not having to coordinate transportation was big plus. Our Balcony cabin was comfortable and functional.which suited us welll. The Kadlin is well laid out as one would expect on a new boat. The staff for the most part were attentive but in the background. The meals were delicious and well served. Having the wine included meant I did not have to spend time trying to match the right wine at an affordable price at each meal as was done on prior ocean cruises. The Cruise Director was very personable, a wealth of information and made sure all went smoothly. The evening cultural events were more enjoyable than I expected. There was a good balance between tours and events and time to relax. The pace is much slower than a typical Caribbean cruise and allowed more time to savor the culture rather than be constantly active, The tours provided with the cruise were professional and enjoyable. Size of the groups was kept manageable. They provided a good exposure to the culture for those of us who had not been to France. I suspect if one has spent significant time in France they would have been too touristy. Best yet there was no sticker shock at the end of the cruise. Return to the airport and getting us to our plans was well orchestrated and smooth as was the whole experience. This river cruise is generally not designed for children. If you are to consider bringing children I would suggest take a river cruise yourself and then decide. Right age, right child and this could be a special memory. Wrong age wrong child could make this a trip you wish you had not chosen. There were no children on our cruise. The intamincy of the boat allowed us to meet some interesting and enjoyable people on this cruise. There is more personal interaction with other cruisers than normally found on a large boat. The boat was big enough when we found someone who was not enjoyable for us it was easy enough to put distance between us afterwards. We love to travel and my Wife and I both agreed this is our favorite adventure together. 40+ years of adventures, so that mean this cruise can be very special. We look forward to enjoying another river cruise when we can afford it in a few years. Read Less
