We absolutely loved this cruise. We have done ocean cruises before but this river cruise is the winner, hands down! Food, service, staff and the comfortable ship-all amazing. The tours were well thought out and informative. We traveled with my brother and his wife and we all had a great time and agree that the food and accommodations were great. They actually jut got back from another Viking cruise and we are all planning on going on another together soon. Loved all of the tours that were included in the cruise. Cruise director Ken was very informative and had every tour organized and all went smoothly. The food and service were outstanding! We loved that there were not assigned seating during meals, we got to meet so many people from all over and it was a relaxing genre. The last night with the dancing and the crew joining in was definitely a fun event. Read Less

My husband wanted to go to Normandy, and I wanted to see Paris so this Heart of Normandy cruise was perfect for us. This was our first overseas trip. We enjoyed it so much that we have already booked a Viking cruise for 2018. Service was impeccable. No details were missed in planning activities, excursions, etc. We would highly recommend Viking - they really took very good care of us. We loved our cabin - it was kept so clean - it was like staying in a luxury hotel. We stayed in a French Balcony with ample storage space. The food was scrumptious and served by pleasant servers who wanted to please. There was a mix of age groups on the cruise but all were pleasant and interesting. Many choices were presented to us (food, activities, excursions, etc.) You could do as much or as little as you chose. We plan on doing this every year for as long as we can. Read Less

I am 65, newly retired, and had never been to Paris, so decided this was the perfect time. I couldn't find anyone to go with me since I decided in March to go in June, but Viking was offering a really good single supplement fare. I opted for the pre-extension trip to Paris, three days, and it was fabulous even if *quite* hot. Here there was no help as far as the hotel single supplement; I had to pay for both people which made the hotel quite expensive. Still, I really wanted the extra time in the city. Most of the people I ended up hanging out with during the cruise were those who also did the Paris add-on as we got to know each other then. The cruise was really nice with good stops. The only thing I wish we could have done was go to St. Malo. It's far, I know, but I really, really want to go there and I was so close. Giverney was jam packed with people. It was hard to really enjoy the gardens for all the people. My favorite village was Petite Andelys. The hike to the castle at the top is a true hike. I thought we should have stopped a couple times instead of just once for everyone to catch their breath. But it's the village itself I liked so much, not the castle. It's just beautiful! The light and sound show at the Rouen cathedral was incredible and a highlight of the trip. Read Less

We have sailed with Viking previously and again have had another memorable experience. The staff and crew were some of the best. They exceeded all expectations of our fellow traveling companions. Being personally guided thru the airport upon arrival and especially for our departure was wonderful again especially for those that have not traveled internationally before. We enjoyed the programs presented by our Program Director each evening providing us with many interesting details regarding things we could do at each of our ports. The onboard musician Nicky was very talented and played a variety of different styles of music. The crew also were brought into the evening's entertainment much to the delight of the guests. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to be most accommodating. Our guides for the shore excursions again were some of the best have experienced. The entertainment, the food, everything top notch. Thank you to all that made this one of the best cruises for us. Read Less

It was a bucket list item to go to Giverny and was going to England for a tour of English gardens. Thought since I would be there so close that I would include the Paris tour. The trip was well organized, from finding the Viking Tour people at the airport when we arrived to being escorted through the airport by a representative when we left. Almost every experience was perfect, especially with the system of earphones that connected to the guides. The only negative was on the only excursion we paid for - Versailles. The crowds were large and extremely rude. The cabin was comfortable and very nicely decorated, as was the entire ship. The chef and wait staff were accommodating of my food allergies. They were sociable and pleasant, you could tell them enjoyed their jobs. I enjoyed the pace of the trip with excursions most days and then time to just sit and watch the "world" go by. I would suggest a menu that provided choices for just a sandwich and fruit at the smaller restaurant, rather than a full meal. I would caution travelers to review the options recorded for any special deals. Although we chose to use the credit given as our gratuities, it was somehow recorded as the on board beverage package, that we did not discover until four days in. I don't drink so I would never have chosen that. The on board staff said they could not remedy the issue. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we really wanted to visit Giverny and the D-Day beaches. Paris, of course, is always wonderful. The whole experience was efficiently arranged without seeming regimented. The ship is clean, comfortable and well designed. We never felt crowded and there was always ample seating in the dining room, aquavit terrace or on deck. We never felt cramped in our cabin (veranda stateroom). The food was quite good- always a good selection at every meal with attentive service. The cruise director gave daily briefings of the next day's activities that were short and informal but gave us everything we needed to know. The ports of call were varied and well chosen. We took advantage of many of the shore excursions, which were very well organized. The trip to the D-Day landing beaches was a highlight. A very moving experience with a great local guide who shared her family scrapbook of photos and letters with us that painted a striking picture of life in Normandy during the German occupation and subsequent allied invasion. Overall, I would give the cruise an A+ rating. The experience fully met our expectations and we would certainly try another. We opted for a pre-cruise stay in Paris organized by Viking. That portion of the trip was quite expensive and, we frankly felt the value was not great. The hotel was a brisk 25 minute walk from the Arc de Triomphe in the opposite direction from the Champs Elysees. It's fortunate the Paris metro is so good- else we would have felt quite isolated. We have found more centrally located hotels in Paris and other cities for less money. We had two great walking tours (to Le Marais and St. Germain de Pres), but we could have arranged those independently. We probably would not repeat a pre-cruise stay through Viking. Overall though, a super cruise- we'll certainly do others! Read Less

One of the main reasons I chose this cruise was the itinerary including Monet's gardens and Normandy. I loved Monet's gardens so much and would have loved more time there. The experience at Normandy was sobering and heartwarming. It was a highlight of the tour. The towns along the way were charming and I enjoyed seeing them via walking tours. A little more time at The Eiffel Tower would have been good. It would have been great to have time to dine there. Some of the excursions really could have used a little more time. The guides were very knowledgeable and enjoyable. I had a little trouble understanding the accent of one of them. Transportation was always comfortable. The entire dining experience was awesome! It was wonderful to have the freedom of options and the relaxed time in the mornings. The food was gourmet quality and the staff was incredible. They reminded us often to let them know if there was anything we needed. The ship was beautiful with ample public areas, lovely dining on the deck, comfortable furniture and beautifully appointed. I met so many wonderful, charming people. Dinner conversations were lively and fun. I would do another Viking cruise in a heartbeat. Read Less

We chose this lovely cruise because it was recommended as an ideal "first timers" trip for non cruisers. Friends recommended our itinerary for our anniversary. Our special day we were at the gardens in Giverny and it was perfect. That evening we were serenaded by "our song" from the marvelous pianist/vocalist and we also received a sparkling dessert to be shared with our tablemates. Could not have been better. We felt spoiled. Every day brought new experiences. We could take part or not and that was delightful. We loved the education component and our trip on board organizer was exceptionally good at his job. We met interesting people and had wonderful wine fueled conversations as the sun set and the music filled the lounge. Who could ask for more? When something is so much better than what you anticipated you can only say "Thank You Viking for helping us celebrate our marriage milestone" in such a perfect way. And yes, we would choose to go again and bring friends with us to share the experience. Read Less

We wanted to see Normandy beaches, Monet's home and gardens plus medieval cities, castles and European river homes. Shore excursions were fantastic with interesting history info, war places, explanation of how medieval homes were built, viewing of castles on hllls, how they were built, etc. We were NOT taken to jewelry or other shops to buy anything but were given free time to do so if desired which was a definite plus from other ocean ship excursions. This was our first river cruise due to the higher price than ocean cruises so we were expecting great service, food and excursions. Viking delivered every day of the 8 day cruise on all 3 with excellent variety of food, ample portions, seconds if desired at dinner, 2 entrees or desserts available if wanted to try different foods and couldn't make a decision on which to choose! Viking's Staff were tremendously friendly, courteous, helpful and professional but also personable. They even danced the "Achy, Breaky Heart" song with cowboy hats so this was hilarious since we are from Dallas, TX, and everyone enjoyed the comraderie of the crew. We enjoyed the river cruise so much we are taking another one in October, the Grand European for 15 days and can't wait to see more sights and the Viking crew as we know they'll go out of their way to make the cruise the most memorable one possible. Paris is always a great destination. Just walking around the city is a great pleasure. Lunch in a little brasserie near Notre Dame added to that pleasure. And, a visit to Notre Dame is good anytime - a place of peace. We had never been to see Monet's gardens. This was a reason for the trip. The gardens more than lived up to expectations even though we were too early for the lilies to be in bloom. Our guide was wonderful, very knowledgeable. We took lots of photos, and had to buy a guide to the gardens to figure out all the variety of flowers. (The gift shop was an excellent shopping stop.) Omaha Beach and the American cemetery were very moving places. Rouen and the smaller towns along the way were most pleasant. And then, there was the simple pleasure of cruising on the Seine River. As always on Viking, the food was excellent, the service friendly and unparalleled, and the cabins most comfortable at the end of a hard day of tourism. We always like that we unpack once and the hotel goes with us on the journey. Read Less

Excursions were so interesting and full of knowledgeable information. After the cruise ended, we opted to spend some post-cruise days in the Loire valley. Was so worth it!! We visited chateaus in fine places-Chenonceaux, Amboise and Chambord and the cities of Tours and Orleans. So much beauty, so many nice French folks and such history! This was our second Viking cruise-first was the Romantic Danube-and they have continued to impress us with their service. The shore excursions and guides were wonderful. A nice variety of guided tours, with very knowledgeable guides. Learned a lot about French history, Impressionism Art and the artists. The American Normandy Military Museum focussed on the Allies building a large port, from simple beachfront, in a week! The earpieces allowed us to hear the guide even 75 yards away. This allowed us to wander a bit, not get lost, and hear everything without needing to be right next to the guide. Each day, water, even umbrellas, were distributed by the crew on debarkation. They thought of everything we could possibly need. Our ship cruised quietly through the Seine River while we enjoyed wonderful dinners, allowing a great view from our moving restaurant. The food was well prepared, and the service was outstanding, by a very pleasant crew. We loved it so much we have signed up for another Viking River Cruise on the Rhine River this fall. Read Less

Special opportunity to see both Monet's gardens and two of the Normandy beaches. The trip was truly a 5-star hotel cruising down the river. Tours particularly of Monet's gardens and of the Normandy beaches were first class. We also enjoyed viewing the ruins of the castle of Richard the Lionhearted. Food was superior with gourmet meals for lunch and dinner. I chose Continental Breakfasts just because I knew the exquisite meals of lunch and dinner with excellent wines were coming up in a few hours. Viking Kadlin is a newer ship. We enjoyed its extras such as the large lounge. A highlight of the trip was visiting the helm and watching the captain give a presentation about the ship while continuing to pilot the boat in the river even as he spoke! This was our third cruise with Viking...and each one has been superb. Excellent accommodations, fantastic food, diverse and entertaining places to go, see and do. Viking caters to adult travelers... so don't expect to see young children. There have been several teens on our trips who were well educated and well spoken. We have enjoyed their company. My wife has limited ability to walk, so we travel with a light-weight transporter chair. It was very easy to use the chair on board. The crew assisted every time in getting on and off the ship. The chair was difficult, but possible, in some locations because of cobble stone pavement. At our request, we had a cabin just off the reception area. In that way, we didn't have long walks, or pushes of the wheel chair, to get to and from the cabin. The skipper was the most helpful of any we have experienced. He took a personal approach, greeting folks each time we departed and when we returned. He regularly helped passengers... often passed out water or refreshments. Read Less

From soup to nuts, Viking treats each passenger as a treasured guest. They arrange everything for you from your home airport to your destination and back. They go out of their way to arrange significant touring, educational, and fun activities - it's as if all their tour guides are hand selected for each tour group. As an example, they always had bottled water ready, along with umbrellas if the sky was grey as you disembarked for tours. The cuisine, as this wasn't your ordinary restaurant, was superb. The smaller ships on the river cruises allow for the guests to meet most of the other cruisers and have personal conversations and connections. Viking's attention to detail is unsurpassed. The ships are immaculate and the crew is exceptional, and always friendly and ready to help. We extended our stay in Paris and had a dedicated Viking host at the hotel. This was my first Viking Cruise and I had many misconceptions of what it would be like. Well, to sum it up, it was fantastic. I brought my 30 year old daughter and we knew we would enjoy being together, but had reservations about our time on the boat. We could not have had more fun. We were impressed with how clean the entire boat was. Our cabin was wonderful and the French Balcony afforded us a beautiful view from our room. We loved the cruise director and enjoyed all of our trips outside of the ship. On the ship, everyone was extremely nice and enjoyed the special drinks from the bartender, as well as, the fantastic piano player. The food was great. We particularly loved the breakfasts and lunches. Plus, being able to have a lighter meal at night was a bonus for us. I enjoyed my trip so much that I have already booked one more trip this year and another next June. Unfortunately my daughter has a job so can't accompany me but all my friends are more than willing to come on a Viking cruise since I have told everyone how much we loved it. Good job Viking! This was our first river cruise ever. Everything about it was A+ - an absolutely fabulous vacation. I really enjoyed being met at the airport by Viking personnel. Although I have been in and out of De Gaulle airport a number of times, I disliked it each time I have been, except this time when I did not have to hassle with anything other than finding my bags. The guide that we had for both the Louvre and Versailles was so good that I wish I could have taken one of his courses at the college where he teaches in Paris. The food was very, very good - not gourmet (the calories for which I do not need) but very tasty and very well prepared. The onboard teaching (e.g., Joan of Ark, the impressionists, etc.) was very helpful. The facilities on board are not like an ocean cruise ship, not even exercise rooms; but you do not need them as you are not on board much during the day since there are daily excursions. Truly an all inclusive trip with excellent guides at all locations! Loved the fact that an excursion was planned practically on arrival from the airport. Also enjoyed the fact that there were less than 200 passengers on board; no line up to board tour buses, at breakfast, etc. Cabins, while smaller than on larger cruise ships I've travelled on, we're extremely comfortable. The food was good as was the overall service. Shore excursions included in the cost is a much appreciated perk - it's nice to let the experts make some of the decisions for you. Insights shared by the excellent staff also most welcome. My personal highlight was the visit to Monet's garden in Giverny. Since it was late October, I was pleasantly surprised. Imagine what it must look like in the spring! The visit to the Normandy beaches was awe inspiring (and we were fortunate enough to to have a gentlemen who had actually landed on one of those beaches join our group). Thank you Viking. First class cruise with 1st class people. We simply just loved, loved, loved the crew! The experience onboard the ship was great in every way. We always felt so comfortable and well taken care of. The food was great with a local influence and the servers in the restaurant although not technically perfect were efficient and personable. The excursions that we went on were well organized … the only comment would be that we would have liked more time at the beaches of Normandy. The reality is that it is there is only so much you can see in one day – if you really want to see everything then you must spend several days there. The ceremony arranged by the ship was a nice touch and made a big impression on us. Overall the tour program was really well organized and the concierge did a great job organizing the tours. The Program Director was also informative, but a little high pitched and too long briefings. All the guides were clear and easy to understand. I would have liked to see an option with a smaller tour group. No complaints about anything. You get what you pay for. Viking is an excellent value for an excellent experience. Go! Now! Read Less
