This is our third Viking River Cruise. We enjoyed the food and wine on this cruise. We also thought the captain and the cruise director were brilliant and fun. More importantly, the excursions were well organized with knowledgeable tour guides (particularly Leif). Our only disappointment on this cruise was “the early bird” special mentality of the passengers. Guests rushed for the dining room frantically and grabbed the window tables. After say 2 hours, the waiters started to rush people out of the restaurant to clean up the dining room. On other cruises, we have had flexibility to tour a museum and arrive at dinner between 8 and 8:15 p.m. at a more leisurely pace. It was odd. The cabins are tiny, but housekeeping was excellent. Indeed, the housekeepers work from morning to evening and supplies are attentively replenished daily. Definitely take the tour of the wheelhouse. The captain is so charming when he tells how everything works. Read Less

We chose this cruise to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We'd cruised the Danube with Viking before and had a great experience. Janet wanted to see Paris and i was eager to tour the Normandy beaches, so we both got something we wanted. I crashed in bed when we arrived on the Kadlin but Janet & another passenger took a shuttle into the city to explore on their own. I strongly recommend using Viking Air for your flights. We had no problems & the layovers were not too long or too short! We had a standard cabin and it was very comfortable-what little time we spent in it (other than sleeping & showering). We don't cruise to spend time lounging in our cabin. The meals were exquisite - tailored to the cuisine of the regions of France we were seeing. Staff were great, helpful & attentive! Activities and excursions were well organized and informative & entertaining. We would certainly do another Viking cruise! They know how to do it! ...Joe Zima Read Less

Our ultimate goal was to see the beaches at Normandy, and since we had such a great experience on a Viking Ocean cruise, we decided to try Viking's River Cruise from Paris to Normandy. The embarkation and disembarcation were done very smooth, as we have come to expect from Viking. We were not prepared for the enormou size of the Charles DeGalle Airport. Since this was a river boat and not an ocean liner, we knew the cabin would be small, but not that small! Only one of us could pass at a time in the narrow space between the end of the bed and the dressers. However the bathroom was certainly up to Viking's high standard, including the heated floor. I love a balcony, but having a cabin on the 2nd deck put our window even or just below the port sidewalk. I felt I was on display. My bigget disappointment was that since we did nearly all of our cruising at night, there was really very little time to sit on the balcony and watch the scenery go by. All of our meals were up to Viking's high standards and the menus always included fresh ingredients and used many French recipes. I did miss the opportunity of dining at alternative resaturants like those on Viking ocean ships. The service staff, from our wonderful stateroom attendant to the front desk and the waiting staff were all superb. There were plenty of opportunities for activities and entertainment if you wanted it. The tours and exursions were thoughfully planned, very well run, and immensely educational. I missed the onboard enrichment sesions that Viking ships have. WARNING: Be sure you have plenty of Euros at the end because we had to put our gratuities on a credit card and with the conversion charges, etc. we wound up paying close to $500! Read Less

The Viking representative in the hotel couldn't have been more helpful. We have taken other Viking River Cruises and never been disappointed. The food is great as is the service. The staff are very friendly and activities and entertainment on board are good. The cabin, though small, is efficiently arranged and very little time is spent in the cabin. There are lovely lounges on the ship. The top deck provides a way to get some exercise as well as lovely views of the surrounding country side. Our trip to the Normandy coast was very educational as well as moving. Because of a celebration at the American cemetery, we did not have enough time to go through the museum on site, which we regret. The port stops and excursions at each port were excellent. Read Less

We chose Viking for two reasons: first, their support of PBS and secondly because of the ratings. We felt that we would get good value for the money and we were thrilled with the entire arrangement. First, the cabins were very well appointed and comfortable. We did have some plumbing questions about gurgling as we were on a lower deck, but that was minor. The heated floors and mirrors in the bath were a nice touch as were the storage options in the cabin. The ship itself was really well designed with a lot of space to relax and chill. The tour guides were the best! They really knew the areas, most were locals and had an incredible grasp of history, secret spaces, and layout. After the arranged tour we had plenty of time to explore on our own with a great orientation from the tours. There was no evidence whatsoever that Viking was trying to cut any corner at all in anything from food to accomodations to scheduling. Read Less

We selected to cruise from Paris to Normandy as my wife wished to celebrate her birthday with a review of the Eifel Tower. On my bucket list was to visit the beaches of Normandy, and we both were excited about our side excursion to Oxford England to visit the very castle where Downton Abby was filmed. Overall, a great cruise experience and the staff and crew were fantastic. We met loads of new friends and cruising buddies along the way. The ship was very easy to get around on and all meals were exceptional. Our shore excursions could not have been any better and the tour guides were phenomenal. We got to peek inside with a much better perspective at all of the side excursions that we would not have had access to if doing on our own. Great job to Viking and it's crew and staffs. Our education levels were raised to new heights because of Viking and it's staff. Will book again on Viking!! Read Less

A friend of mine had taken Viking River cruises before and she was so happy with them I decided to try them. I don’t regret a minute. Food delicious, staff friendly and helpful. The activities in each city and tours allowed us to see things that Ocean Cruises are not capable of doing. Cabin was always clean and ready for us after an active day. The transportation from to the ship and also back to airport were always on time and helped us check in. While on the Seine River it actually snowed. The head of the tour indicated it was the first time he saw it snow during the time of our tour. We even got video so we can have it as a memory of our trip. Normandy was very impressive and allowed us to capture a portion of what it was like during the invasion. I will never forget this River cruise Read Less

I chose the Viking Paris to NormNdy River Cruise based on what I heard and was not disappointed in the least. The Crew was great and ship was beautiful. Food and the beverage service was first class. Excursions were awesome and onboard entertainment great. An Air France strike during the cruise caused some passenger concern but Viking was on top of the situation assisting in rebooking flights on other carriers. I can not say enough about the friendliness and courtesy of all onboard staff. The restaurant provided a varied menu each day and included some standard items that could be ordered each day. Other fare offered in the restaurant were regional dishes. Wine and beer are offered st no additional cost with the lunch and evening meals. Local entertainers were brought onboard at several ports of call to add to the onboard entertainment experience. During our Normandy American Cemetery visit we were able to participate in a ceremony honoring the fallen. A special event on a very special cruise. Read Less

The promotional price was good and Viking always gives great service. However, the included flights to and from France were fraught with delays and cancellations. The travel was the only downer to the trip. We had asked for consideration in assigning seats due to a medical condition and we were told that it was not possible on the return leg of the trip. This was very disappointing. The cabin was adequate and conveniently located; the room service was excellent. The dining experience was great as usual and so was the entertainment. Wait staff and chef did an excellent job. Brenton, our tour director also did an excellent job and was very efficient and concerned for everyone's welfare. The included shore excursions as well as the optional excursions were very good. There were no children on this cruise. We hope to make Viking Ocean our next cruise; however, we are sure more river cruises will be on our bucket list, too! Read Less

We chose this River Cruise because of its serene nature and smooth boating. We like to see the locks and be able to watch the various little towns as we glide along. This was our first overseas cruise and we heard that Viking always does an amazing job. The cabin was beautifully cleaned and kept every day. Our house keeper spoke wonderful English and was a pleasure to have conversation. The room had plenty of space, including the bathroom. We took advantage of as many excursions as we could fit in and the details were exact. Tour guides were knowledgeable; bus drivers were incredible in moving about narrow and busy streets. Everyone was polite and accommodating. The maitre de assisted with gluten free choices and always checked and met with me for every meal. Food was great even when we were out and about. We met lovely people who we continue to email. This trip was so good that we returned and booked another! Read Less

The length, 8 days was perfect for us. The experience of having your hotel room follow you from destination to destination was an added perk. The ship and our cabin were 5 star. Cruising on the river watching the world go by on the upper deck was one of our favorite activities. Dining was beyond exceptional with a pleasantly varied menu. The outstanding service by a terrific staff, whether it be in the dining room, in the lounge or just at the front desk made us feel like this was a place we frequently many times. Shore excursions, onboard entertainment and activities were definitely first rate. The shore excursions were always informative and fun. We learned so much about French history and the French people. We are definitely planning another Viking River Cruise for next year, possibly on the Danube River. We are looking forward to another fantastic exploration of European history and culture. Read Less

Destination and price motivated our booking. We had a group of 14 friends who travelled with us. The staff of the Kadlin bent over backwards to provide top tier service in all areas of the ship. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and extremely professional. We were not docked in Paris but were transferred by motor coach. I would have preferred to be closer to Paris but shuttles were provided. The weather was warm and pleasant so sightseeing was perfect. The tour guides on the excursions were all well informed professionals who provided in depth information about the culture and history of the areas we visited. River cruises are ideal for groups because the entire group does not have to travel together and no one has the burden of planning excursions for the group. Some days, members of our group decided to stay back on the ship or go off on their own and everyone met back at the ship for dinner. We all had a wonderful time and came back with great memories! Every time we left the boat we were given water and the same on the return if not a little snack. The Captain made himself available all the time. There were activities on board to prepare for some excursions. The food was excellent, if you went hungry it was your own fault, Especially enjoyed the local foods prepared on board. We had heard Viking River Cruises were great! And ours was! We opted for the 3-day pre-cruise in Paris and stayed at the beautiful Marriott Opera House on Hausmann. We were met at the airport on time and were transported in a very nice Mercedes to our hotel where we checked in and met with our Viking rep at the hotel. There were free walking tours available that gave us some great history and recommendation of great places to eat. We boarded the long-ship on our 4th day for our cruise from Paris to the Beaches of Normandy. Omaha Beach was worth the trip as was the movie at the visitors center. At the American cemetery our guide conducted a very moving memorial service for us consisting of the singing of the National Anthem, prayers, recognition of veterans among our group, and we each received a red rose to place on a gravesite as we walked the rows and rows of white headstones. It was a very moving and beautiful visit. We took the optional Versailles tour, which was expensive and consisted of an included lunch at a golf course. The lunch there was terrible, but the tour was excellent. We also paid for a Paris By Night tour. It rained that evening so we didn't get to see through the bus windows as well we would have liked. It was great to see the Eiffel Tour at 11 p.m. With it's twinkling lights. We had a Veranda B room that had a lovely outdoor sitting area with 2 chairs and a table. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage to unpack our things. The room had it's own thermostat control, so we were always comfortable. All of the food was great! You could eat the buffet breakfast or choose items from a menu for all meals. We had free wine/beer with lunch and dinner. There were no assigned seats at meals which allowed you to meet lots of new people. The entertainment was wonderful with music during Happy Hour and after dinner. One evening in port a small 3-person local "soft jazz" group played, another night the piano guy sang. Both were excellent. Another evening there was a fun "dance with a staff member" contest, which was loads of fun. We met some wonderful people on the cruise as there were only 196 people aboard. Most were close to our age ranging from 60-80. The tours in each port were great, some free, some you had to pay extra for. All guides on our tours were locals and spoke English and were very knowledgeable. There were beautiful sitting areas aboard the ship. The top deck had lots of lounge chairs and also had shaded area for enjoying the view. All of the ship's staff were delightful, helpful and fun. No children are permitted, which, although we enjoy children, we didn't have to listen to whining, etc. The Captain of the ship was young and a very personable young man. My husband being retired Navy enjoyed talking with him. Our chambermaid, Gunita went the extra mile the whole trip. She noticed we had wine on the table in our room the first afternoon and that evening there were 2 wine glasses waiting for us. Our room was sparkling clean and the bath products were top-notch with fluffy towels. The bottom line is we were treated like royalty, and like family, wined and dined and loved everything about our cruise. We are already looking forward to our next cruise Amsterdam to Budapest in 2020. Read Less

We were traveling with a party of 8. In our group there were 4 couples. As a group, we especially liked the way we were treated. The guides did their best to make certain we were in the same tour group each and every day. The attendants on board did their best to make sure we were seated together at each meal. The servers we very attendant when it came to refilling drinks and clearing away dishes. This was the second Viking Cruise I have been on and it was better than the first. I found the food, service and entertainment to be excellent. The ports were just as I expected them to be and the guides were very good. No stone was left upturned. The shopping was good and such a good time was had by all in out party. The enrichment options were very good and lent to the over all experience of the trip. And the ship, the ship was clean and well managed. Not a spot seemed out of place. Upon arriving to our port, an unexpected shore excursion was made available at no cost to all guests. It was a great way to prevent sleeping after a long flight. Upon arriving to the American Cemetery in Normandy, all guests were provided, at no cost, a long-stemmed rose to be placed at the grave of a fallen soldier. What a moving experience. This was a birthday celebration. I have wanted to get back to Paris for many years and my wife had never been there. This looked like a good way to do it. We had been looking at Viking material for quite a while. It seemed the time was right. Hard to say anything negative about the onboard experience or the support we received to get to the ship and then back to the airport. Exceeded our expectations. The tour guides we had were outstanding. But, if we do it again we might not do as many of the tours since they often involved a fair amount of time on a bus. I think I would opt for spending time in the small town ports or get the bus into Paris when in that area. Not that the tours were bad - they were outstanding. I just wasn't prepared for the amount of time we would be on the bus. We took all of them thinking it would maximize our time. I should have been a little more particular and spent more time off the bus. The food was wonderful and I can't say enough about the crew. Everyone was attentive and pleasant. The small number of passengers was a plus. Made some new friends and it always felt like the ship was our home. Joel, our advisor when making the reservations was also excellent. I did suggest to him that he make sure people who take this cruise fully understand what is involved with each tour so they can make a good decision. We will definitely do a Viking cruise again someday. Lots of places we would like to see and I really liked the idea of cruising on the river. Very enjoyable. Read Less

Embarkation and disembarkation were handled easily from being met at the airport to the return. The excursions were very nice. Options were available for those of us who had limited mobility. We also had free time to explore the towns on our own. The meals were excellent with great choices. It was nice to know that the foods reflected the ports/areas we visited.
