Having taken a number of land individual and group tours in Europe, including Prague, Budapest and Vienna in 2001, I and my travel companion wanted to experience a more relaxing time, avoiding multiple overnight stays in different hotel rooms. Except for the initial add-on of 3 days in Prague, it truly was a wonderful, informative and relaxing experience river cruising. I consider every place visited in Germany, Austria and Hungary to have been special - the WWII sites in Nuremberg, a BMW assembly plant, the cathedral organ in Passau, the museums and cafes of Vienna, and superbly scenic and historic Budapest. The final highlight was the evening cruise on the Danube in Budapest. Food service was top notch, the cabin comfortable and well designed and I rate the entertainment director very highly. He was professional, well informed and always helpful in answering questions and suggesting ideas for port explorations. Compared with other cruises (ocean) I have taken this Viking cruise was best by far. Read Less

Had never been on a cruise and friends recommended a river cruise, specifically Viking. Viking staff took care of everything from the moment we arrived in Nuremberg until they saw us off at the Budapest airport. The room was clean, looked quite new, and was well designed and appointed. It was great to unpack and stow the suitcases under the bed until departure. All aspects of the room were well designed to be compact but allow for room to move around, store clothing in drawers and closet, and take care of all bathroom needs. Had a nice view through the sliding glass door. The ship itself provided for reading and computer usage in a library, indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge for entertainment and socializing, an upper deck with seating and several games, a concierge to help with sightseeing plans, and a person in charge of all the tours and activities, with a daily briefing in the lounge so that we always knew what the next day held. The dining was excellent, with options that included full meals, light meals, and snacks as well as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and a full bar. For each meal there were many options to include coverage of all tastes and diets; everything we ate was well prepared and seasoned. Shore excursions were varied and included tours of towns, cities, and abbeys/cathdrals (including an organ concert in Passau), a ferryboat ride, and making strudel, as well as a variety of optional activities. We choose this cruise because we got to spend an extra 2 days on board compared to the similar cruise for this year. We spent 2 days in Vienna and got to make a stop prior to reaching Budapest while spending just 1 day as part of the cruise ashore at the beginning and end of the trip. We been to both Budapest and Bamberg/Nuremberg on prior cruises. We crave the time on board and the beauty of the river and the towns/villages along the way. We so look forward to dinner in the dining room. We make friends with so many people - passengers and crew alike. Viking always give us fantastic service. We were upgraded from a French balcony to deluxe veranda and loved it. Either cabin would have been fine but it's nice to have a balcony to take pictures from. We've had 5 cruises with Viking - 4 river and 1 Mediterranean cruise so we know what to expect and Viking has never disappointed us. They've always been great. Read Less

To start, we've cruised Viking before and discovered it to be a far superior and personal cruise line than many of their competitors. Cruising up the Danube from Budapest is probably one of the most scenic river cruises in the world. It was not only relaxing, but Viking docks almost every morning for an included tour of the local area sharing with us the local culture, and in many cases encouraging us to interact with the locals. It's always positive and fun. We also enjoy Viking's attitude towards it's passengers. They are always there to help and explain anything to us. The crews attitude is "you are on vacation, and we are here to make sure you enjoy yourself". I asked on our first Viking cruise, "do I have to dress up for dinner?'. Numerous responses to me were, "your on vacation, so dress casual and enjoy yourself" (I might add, they killed all future desire to ocean cruise ever again). Our cruise director is always there to explain what is happening when you pass through interesting areas and river locks, etc. We never felt so pampered, it was almost as if they couldn't do enough to please us (not that we expected this approach). The Viking Egil captain, as very busy man, was personable and always happy to explain ship operations, etc. This trip was taking by only my wife and me. Our children are all grown and we encourage them to try Viking too. Read Less

This was my first experience on any type of cruise ship. I wanted to see the cities along the Danube this cruise included on the route. Viking created a wonderful experience from the time spent in Prague until it ended in Budapest! There were Viking staff along every leg of this trip to help make the experience very memorable. From the time we got off the plane in Prague til we got to security at the Budapest airport the entire staff on this ship was fabulous, welcoming and knowledgable about the ship and areas we were visiting! The wait staff was very attentive to the people at their tables especially when one sat in the same waiters area for the whole trip. Housekeeping paid attention to every little detail. The tours of the cities we stopped in were great and very well organized. The guides were locals, knew their hometowns very well and could impart a lot of information, useful and fun facts about each of the towns and cities we stopped in along the route. The customer service on the Egil and the company of Viking were unparalleled! Read Less

We have done a previous Viking cruise and really enjoyed it. We did the cruise from Paris to Normandy & back. We loved Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities we have ever experienced. We were so glad we added 2 extra days to explore it more. Highly recommend a visit to this city. We were disappointed in Vienna, a blah city to us. Maybe we were not exposed to the better parts of the city All of the amenities that Viking offers are excellent, from the rooms, wonderful food/meals with multiple choices, the daily land excursions included. We signed up for 3 additional excursions (additional cost) and enjoyed all of them. The local guides were very knowledgeable and provided insightful information to the area. We will do another Viking cruise to a new area of travel for us. Read Less

I had heard so many wonderful things about Budapest, Vienna and Prague from friends who travel extensively. And nothing but kudos for this particular Viking trip. My friend and I had never chosen cruises for our previous trips but the river variety was perfect to suit our needs, in contrast to the huge ocean voyages. We found the staff of our boat friendly, knowledgeable and always there when we needed them. The food was beyond excellent and the staff was accommodating to passengers with special needs and diets. The combination of guided tours with a great deal of independent time was perfect for us, as we love to explore on our own, as well as spend time with local guides. We are planning to take another Viking river cruise next year. The choices are numerous and there is such a big, exciting world "out there". Viking certainly offers a multitude of choices that include those factors we savor on our trips: vibrant history, unusual and representative architecture, art and music of the area, foods to try..... We celebrated our 40th anniversary by treating ourselves to a cruise. We have been on a 3,000+ cruise ship and in comparison, the river cruise was so very nice, intimate, and relaxing. Being able to sail through little villages and feeling so close to the area we were in was delightful. The tours that were included were informative and well done with knowledgeable guides. The extra tours included a nice variety of choices. Dining was open so we sat with many, many different people. The food was excellent and made dining a delight. We met new friends from England that we will be friends with forever. It was fun to meet new people from everywhere in the world. The ship was well appointed and our cabin very comfortable. The crew was very accommodating and treated us royally. Everything was so well planned that it made our travel stress free, from meeting us at the airport to our lovely hotel room in Budapest.Yes, we will do it again and look forward to our next trip! We chose the Danube cruise (Nuremburg to Budapest) because it visited parts of Europe which were new to us. We started out with a 3 day pre-cruise stay in Prague...one of the most amazing cities we've ever visited. Great atmosphere, food, people and an architectural crossroad of Europe. We could not have been more pleased with Viking's attention to detail in every regard. We were on e Egil, one of the newest of the Viking longships. Our tours and the tour guides were the highlight of our trip...So knowledigble and excited to share their cities with us plus time to explore on our own. We were impressed by the accommodations and the friendliness of the entire staff and crew. There was nothing that they wouldn't do to make our trip perfect. (Although there wasn't much at they hadn't already thought of and provided. Meal choices had something for everyone and service was friendly, but professional. (By the 2nd day servers knew our names, drink preferences). Our room while small...but who wants to spend time in the room...had an extremely comfortable bed and nice bath. Plus every time we left the room, Ivan was just steps away, always with a smile, and immediately replaced towels and cleaned...we wondered if he ever slept! Regensburg, Passau, Vienna and Budapest were great venues to explore and deserve return visits when we can spend more time... Especially Budapest. It was so different and while we had high expectations, it was even better than we expected. Then entire trip was casual, relaxed and an over all great experience. We will do more river cruises and see no reason to use any other line than Viking. Read Less

We choose Viking for our cruise because of the great reviews we received from friends and family who had enjoyed the Viking experience. Our own experiences confirmed and indeed exceeded the reviews. Everything about the Viking experience was first class. The cabin (Veranda) was well appointed, spacious, and luxurious. The dining experience exceeded our expectations, with food, drink and service of the highest quality. The ports and shore excursions were interesting, expertly conducted and thoroughly enjoyable. All of this combined to make the Viking cruise experience memorable, but there is a more important aspect of the Viking experience most worthy of mention, the ship's crew. Captain Chaplynskyy radiated a calm professional aura of confidence. He was ably assisted by his assistants who constantly amazed all with the sure confidence with which they handled the ship, even during the delicate entry and exits from the locks. One always had the sense that safety was the most paramount concern. Mr. Davis Thomas is deserving of special mention, not only for the expert discharge of his cordial duties as our host, but for the extraordinary leadership climate he created among the staff, from dining to housekeeping everyone person with whom we came in contact radiated a special sense of caring. Our tour manager, Anthony Papandrea was outstanding!!!! Read Less

We had previously done the 8 day cruise on the Rhine with Viking and were looking forward to a cruise with them along the Danube. We were not disappointed. The trip was to be from Budapest to Nuremberg with stops along the way. Because of the height of the river, the ship did not make it to Regensburg and Nuremberg. They were able to bus us to our scheduled tours in Regensburg and Nuremberg. We knew before making our reservations, that there is always a possibility of modifications of the trip due to the water level. Because of the inconvenience of the long bus rides, they provided us with lunch at biergartens. The ship was very clean and you could hardly sense any movement on the river while docked and cruising. We enjoyed all of our meals and the available selections. We were fine with the wine and beer service at meals, and the availability of drinks if desired in the lounge as we are not heavy drinkers. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our cruise was for our 40th anniversary later in the year. One night when we returned to our room there was a bottle of wine, 2 glasses, a small cake, a card, two towels arranged as swans kissing and artificial rose petals on the bed. We met 2 couples from Kent- England and Ohio who we enjoyed time with at meals and in the lounge. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and added valuable insights to the tours. We were given great instructions on the use of the subway in Vienna and had no problems getting around on our own during free time. The average age of travelers was about 55+. We would definitely cruise with them again. Read Less

We had taken a Rhine River Cruise 2 years ago and were very pleased with the experience. We decided to take a Danube River Cruise to celebrate our 40th anniversary. All members of the crew were professional, friendly and efficient. We met many interesting folks from all over the USA, Canada and some from Europe. The staterooms are very clean and comfortable. The chef and staff are expert in making meals that are appetizing and delicious. There is something to please everyone's taste. We do not like crowded ships. Viking ships are just right for a more intimate setting. The cruise director makes a strong effort to provide entertainment that is inclusive for all, whether a game night, musical or cultural presentation, along with food representative of the area, such as the Taste of Germany event. We have been very pleased with both of our cruises with Viking. The itineraries, the accommodations and the staff meet all of our expectations. IF you do your research before booking, you will know what to expect. Keep up the good work Viking! Read Less

This river cruise was wonderful! Well organized in every respect. Food excellent. Cabin a little small (French Balcony) The french balcony was great and a savings from Veranda. Going thru locks was fascinating. Unfortunately due to flooding, the top deck was closed for the majority of the trip. Also, could not make it to last 3 destinations for same reason. We took busses. Cruise line was great. Ship very clean, well kept. It was less than a year old. All excursions were fabulous. Very different that ocean Caribbean cruises. No beach, no pool, no casino, essentially no shopping. Ship much smaller that typical ocean cruise. A lot makes it difficult to compare to an ocean cruise. 2 different animals, like comparing apples to oranges. They are both fruits, but that's it. Lots of exercise doing all the walking with the excursions. There is no fitness center on board, but there is plenty of walking. I walked 40 miles during this trip. Would I go again? In a heartbeat. We enjoyed the included shore excursions and chose several optional ones as well. During the walking tours we choose the leisurely one and we saw more than the ones that walked faster. The guides were local and showed us the cities in a way only a local can. Our cabin was a standard and it was very nice and plenty roomy. We never spent much time in it anyway. Would I go again?? You bet, in fact we are going on another Viking Cruse that repeats some of the same stops because we want to do tours/events that we could not see the first time. Friendly, efficient staff giving excellent service and the ship was beautiful and well maintained. Had a cabin with a balcony...highly recommend that. Participated in all included excursions, but did not do any extra ones. We enjoyed having that extra time to explore locations on our after the planned outings. The food was excellent and the servers all very attentive and engaging. Appreciated the fact that beer and wine with our meals did not cost extra and the wine selection was nice and included regional wines. We really enjoyed the fact that there was an informal cafe as well as the full service dining room. We also enjoyed the coffee/water no snack bar that was always available. Evening entertainment was varied and enjoyable. We did stay several extra days at our final destination...Amsterdam....and received excellent service form the Viking representatives at the hotel there as well. Read Less

We went with three other couples that had been our friends since high school. We ate together at all of our meals and consequently did not meet many new people. However, my husband and I would not hesitate to go without friends as everyone seemed very friendly and open to new acquaintances. We were impressed with how worry free this type of travel is. All of your meals are available on the ship, so there is no looking for restaurants. While in a port, all of your time and energy could go toward learning about the area. The food was excellent. There were many healthy choices and I am happy to report that I did not gain a pound. We really enjoyed the ship's crew on the Egil. Our waiters were George, Arnold and Arnold. They were excellent and greatly added to our good time. We stayed on the lowest level and the view was not as good, but we still were able to see things when we chose to. We may upgrade next time. Our rooms were kept very clean and fresh everyday. The guides were excellent. We especially enjoyed our very tall guide in Cologne, whose name I can not recall. In short, we will be cruising again with Viking. Read Less

Our first cruise of any sort. The ship and itinerary appealed to us. We were not disappointed ! Every part of the trip was above our expectations. The food, ship, staff and off ship tours were amazing. We were definitely catered to! The passengers were all mature...mostly above 50. No children...they would have been bored. We met many new people, mostly American and Canadian, with a few Brits thrown in. The staff was a little more diverse but all spoke excellent English and all had a great sense of humor. The ship appeared to be new, practically pristine. The cabin and bath were beautiful but small by necessity. The bed was large and very comfortable. Great sleeping. We wondered about the motion of the ship being an issue but we could barely feel any movement at all. Food was plentiful and wonderful. Meals were a treat and never hurried Only dress code was for dinner in the main dining room and then it was just no jeans or shorts. The rest of the day was very casual. We took advantage of the included tours every day and spent the rest of the day just relaxing in the wonderful lounge or on the sun deck. Every day there was an optional tour offered and they sounded intriguing. We did get off the ship in a couple of towns and explore a little on our own...what a treat! We did our shopping in Cologne. Vacation of a lifetime, for a special birthday. Spent 2 days in Amsterdam, staying at the Moevenpick in the 2 day pre-cruise package. The packaged tour was informative with at top-notch local guide. We were impressed with all of the tour guides throughout the cruise. The cruise itself went by too quickly and each stop provided a good sampling of highlights--always much more to do than we had time for at each stop. One thing that's import is that all the docking locations were primo. The crew, dining and service were impeccable and first class. I would not hesitate to go on another Viking cruise. The only issue I had was that of not being able to get detailed itinerary information before leaving for the cruise. We'd plan to meet a friend in Heidelberg after work but it turns out the ship left Heidelberg for Speyer at 2, so we missed that connection. The Viking team made embarkation and disembarkation smooth and trouble-free, from the moment we stepped through customs in Amsterdam to the moment we were turned over to security check-in in Basel. The AirFrance/KLM air travel arrangements were smooth. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I could see tulips, windmills, castles, and the Swiss Alps all on one trip. I id that with extensions before and after the cruise. While on the cruise, the crew was attentive, listened to my requests, remembered my desires, and waited on me like a queen. The bedding was perfect, even the pillows, and I have muscles that get cramped away from my own bed..We made friends with passengers and staff, both of whom we have remained in contact. As two around-80 women, we were the ship's mascots and well cared for. And oh, yes, the food was wonderful too. I liked that information was provided about the areas we were visiting and not just provided just for entertainment alone. Several times there was singing or musical perfermances that were enjoyable but again they were pertinent to the area. The shore excursions were diversified and interesting with well-thought out alternatives. Since I was slower on a cane, groups were organized for those of us who were not as fast as most passengers. We still saw the most important parts of the shore excursions at a more leisurely pace. Twice; in port, we hired taxis to take us through small towns and the staff was helpful in directly them where to take us. Also helpful in arranging for a hair appointment in port. My friend and I found the river cruise so enjoyable that we are looking forward to a Viking Ocean Cruise in a month. Read Less

The staterooms are very nice size, everything you need and they have a very caring cleaning staff. Everyone went above and beyond on the ship, you had no reason to worry. The food is delicious and the food staff is wonderful, doing everything they could to make meals very pleasing. The food was fresh and had a lot of thought on being good for you. The shore excursions were fun and the tour guides made history telling a little more fun with their stories and facts. When we could, we found time to go shopping and stroll around the villages. The sites were amazing, they made great choices on ports and the guided tours. The ship had on board entertainment with singers, glass blower and other local demonstrations on food and drinks. The only bit of info that we did not know was that we should have planned two extra days. One upon arrival because we didn't embark the ship at 5pm. We missed the happenings of that day. Day two would be for the last day of the trip. We arrived in Amsterdam only to go to the airport. The ship was helping people with car and hotel arrangements to se the sights in Amsterdam.
