Absolutely the best vacation. The entire staff was outstanding, but 4 people stood out. Oliver, the Program Director, was professional, enthusiastic, articulate, energetic, and very flexible. Anything he was a part of was made fun and memorable. Chef Renee, the head chef, was very personable and he and his cooking staff were always on point with the meals aboard the ship. His personal attention made us feel like he cared about my family and I. Additionally, he was a great guide on the 1 tour he guided through a farmer's market in Vienna. Belle, our server in the dining room, and her assistant Ali, were outstanding as well. Their personal attention to me and my family was second to none. We looked forward to breakfast and dinner not only because of the delicious food, but also their smiling faces and eager attitudes. Their superb service made them excellent Viking ambassadors. The only "4" rating was for value. I just thought the costs associated with the optional shore excursions were a bit high. The entire staff of the Ebil made Viking River Cruises very proud. Well done to all! Read Less

We took a Viking river cruise from Budapest to Prague. First the good things: 1.) The crew was great. Very helpful. They communicated with passengers and some even remembered names. I would rate the ship staff as A++++++. 2.) Budapest and Prague were fantastic. We had good weather and the cities were beautiful. The boat took a river cruise at night in Budapest and the view was spectacular. 3.) Get the silver spirits package. Worth every penny if you want a good glass of wine at dinner or a cocktail in the evening. 4.) Food was good considering the limited kitchen space available for preparation. Now the bad: 1.) When not on shore, it is boring. There is nothing to do on the boat. As one passenger said: "my wife and I sit in the common area and play gin rummy, we could do that in our kitchen" 2.) Spend any money you receive as "shipboard credits". Any left over cannot be cashed out or used for tips. However, you are not told this at the beginning of the trip. In our case this was accrued as the result of billing errors at the time the trip was set up and frankly, I feel like I was ripped off. 3.) Prepare for spending a lot of time in locks looking at steel walls while the boat goes up. Again - boring 4.) Rooms are much smaller than equivalent on cruise lines and lots of things rattle. Our air conditioner sounded like a jet engine. In fairness, the crew did fix our problems but we often had to put up with them overnight. I doubt we will take another river cruise. Read Less

We wanted to visit Budapest, Vienna and Prague, and our cruise itinerary gave us the perfect chance to do so. We spent three days before the cruise exploring Budapest, and three days after the cruise exploring Prague. The Austrian and German towns we stopped at along the way exceeded expectations, as did our time aboard the Egil. Shore excursion guides ranged from average to excellent. Our one day on the river traveling down the Wachau valley was gorgeous and relaxing. A positive aspect of river cruising is having your "hotel" travel with you, obviating the necessity of packing, checking in and unpacking at each new city. On the other hand, the requirement to return to the ship by dinnertime most days precluded experiencing city nightlife. Breakfasts and dinners on board were well-prepared and well-served, but unfortunately room service was not available. Nightly ship-wide meetings consisted of informative presentations of then next-day's ports and schedules, as well as various musical performances. Bar service during and afterwards was fast and unlimited. Last but not least, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and all around amazing. They worked very hard to make sure our stay went smoothly, and all our needs were met, both on and off the ship. This was our first river cruise and we definitely will be back for more! Read Less

Seen the ads on NET TV - the places we went, the food we ate and peaceful ride on the ship (EGIL) was unbelievably good. The service people went out of their way to help, accommodate and keep our room clean while interacting with us as though we were friends. The only thing we had too much of were the number of locks we had to go through each day - way to many. The staff officer in charge of entertainment and tours was very good - funny, and very personable. I appreciated the fact we didn't have to sit with the same people each night at dinner - we had freedom to chose our dining table and to review options for our dinner meals. I would highly recommend a Viking cruise for anyone looking for a nice smooth ride, with superior accommodations throughout the ship. Thank you Viking River cruise! Read Less

Opportunity to visit cities between Budapest and Nuremberg. Cities were fantastic, saw a lot in the amount of time we spent in each, from big cities to smaller ones like Passau, etc. First time river cruising, would definitely come back with Viking. Food was fantastic, lots of choices and serving staff were phenomenal. Would definitely return to spend more time in any of the cities on this tour. spent extra two days in Nuremberg at end of cruise, highly recommend it. lots of great food in small establishments, fantastic city. Budapest is fantastic city, each side of river is different. Vienna also was favorite, recommend the visit to Lippanzanner stallions. beautiful horses, see them up close. definitely a must for horse people and for those who are not. Entertainment certain evenings was extremely good, relevant to Vienna music, etc. wandering streets in Passau and Regensburg recommended. churches in all these cities are almost indescribable local guides know their stuff and learned a lot about history sailing between cities was very interesting to see old castles and churches on hillsides On-board dining room staff were phenomenal- service, very helpful, on first name basis almost immediately. Timing was perfect, so with the advice of a super agent at AAA (Portsmouth NH ), we were able to book the Romantic Danube , with a great cabin, Veranda stateroom 219 ! The Viking people were on top of everything, from meeting us at the to seeing us off. In fact, our flight leaving Nuremberg was cancelled, but our escort made sure new arrangements were made, and stayed with us until departure. On board the Egil I felt pampered by Anthony the cruise director and entire staff. Amazed that servers knew us by name on the second day. Food was superb with a menu that surprised me with the variety. The stateroom for its size had plenty of room, although we didn't spend much time in it. Shore trips were were well done with guides who knew their sites, and answered all questions. This was a 'bucket list' markoff for an 82 year old celebrating a 55th wedding anniversary, and well worth. This was our second river cruise with Viking. There is no better way to cruise. We wished we had taken the pre-cruise, didn't feel we had enough time to explore Budapest. We won't make that mistake again. The entire staff cares about you and your every need. I had to have lactose free meals, everyday the head waiter came to my table at breakfast with the days menu. He had crossed out items I could not have. I sincerely appreciated his every effort. I did not get sick once. We celebrated our 25th anniversary on board. Dinner was excellent every night, but this night we were sung to, with a delicious passion fruit cheesecake. Made it memorable. The entertainment was great, especially the arranged "Octoberfest". We went to an excursion to an Octoberfest location, which was not "Viking Quality." We expressed our disappointment to "Oliver", and that night we had an Octoberfest that was great, food, drinks, and great entertainment . That brings me to Oliver, our Program Director. This man did everything possible to make it a fantastic cruise. He listened when we spoke and took action. He never missed a beat. I have never met someone with so much energy. The excursions were well thought out and mostly done by locals who knew their stuff. We are planning to go again in Dec. of 1918 and bring two of our friends. Read Less

We wanted to do something Special for our 45th Anniversary! We have had our eye on a River Cruise, so Viking commercials got our wonder going. We chose the Danube Cruise mostly because we wanted to see the sights of Europe. We chose wisely, the ship Egil was just the right size. Embarkation was smooth from the airport to our port in Passau. There was always someone there to make us feel we were in the right place. Boarding the ship was easy, inviting, clean and exciting. Our cabin was beautiful & all the comforts of home with a beautiful view off our room. Dining was easy, we sat where we liked and met new friends that we ended up chumming around with! Our waiter was pleasant, funny and took care of our wants & needs. The food was delicious, got to try new things! Always such a variety, and to have a glass or two of wine with lunch & dinner was a plus! Entertainment was just alright, nothing elaborate. Cabin Service was okay, we were missed the first day and had to ask if there was daily service....(our gal was stationed on the bottom floor and we were on the top floor, so we didn't see much of her) We REALLY enjoyed having an Included Port Excursion in EVERY Port. Beautiful countryside to walk around in and we took great advantage of our time off the ship. All in All it was a Wonderful Cruise!! Read Less

The views from our stateroom were absolutely incredible. Staff were friendly and very professional. Communication was very good. Daily verbal briefings about excursions supplemented by daily newsletter. Viking knows how to do cruises right. Transportation to and from ship went very smoothly and we even were docked overnight from city of origin of cruise which is great in case your flight is delayed. I have been on ocean cruises previously which were great but I found the river cruise to e much more to my liking although I would have liked a gym and on board ship but no room for these. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise and see the Danube and that part of Europe.. Loved everything about it food and service were excellent!! Favorite place was Budapest but each stop was interesting. Everyplace we stopped we could either walk into town or they had Viking buses to take us, the tours were wonderful. They also had choices for folks who wanted to walk more and others who wanted to go more on the bus. We added on time both before and after the cruise. We started our trip in Berlin and spent a few days, than on to Nuremberg to catch the boat. After we got off the boat we spent extra time in Budapest than rented a car and traveled to Slovenia and Croatia for another week, both beautiful and very interesting. We were there late Oct. to mid Nov. weather was great sunny and clear but not hot, probably in the 40's. Perfect for sight seeing with a warm coat. We will do another river cruise in the future. Travelled with a friend with dietary restrictions. Chef met with her every morning to plan her meals for the day. Our explorer suite was amazing. Beautiful, spacious bathroom, separate bedroom and living room and great views from the balconies. Enjoyed the daily pastries and cookies waiting for us on return from the day's excursion. Ship was clean. Reception staff was professional and very helpful. Guides did a good job of adjusting the walks to accommodate varying levels of fitness and mobility. Nuremberg to Budapest is a beautiful itinerary. We had actually sailed this same stretch on previous Viking cruises-Vienna to Amsterdam in 2008 and Basel to Antwerp in 2012. Enjoyed the ports so much that we wanted to see them again. The organ concert in Passau was very memorable. The captain timed our arrival into Budapest so that the city was lit up. Spectacular! This was a retirement celebration for me. We chose to see places in Europe that we had not been to before. I am a music educator so being able to be in Vienna on my birthday was extra special. We took in the extra concert in Vienna the night we were there; it was very well done. We liked being able to sit with many different people as we ate our meals on board. We met many interesting folks from all over the States. My sister traveled with my husband and I. She was excited to see places she had not been to before either. She is a very good amateur photographer and will be putting a book together of her photos. The food and service aboard the ship were great. The staff was friendly and helpful when we asked any questions. I felt as though this trip whetted my appetite to do more of this kind of travel. We'll see how that goes in years to come. Read Less

We wanted to do a river crise as we had heard so much about them . We have done a lot of ocean cruises but never a river one. Flew from Heathrow with BA one and a half hours had to collect luggage and take to bus. The transfer seemed a bit long winded, as we seemed to get to the Danube from the wrong end. We had to drive in very heavy traffic a long way past the ship and back so we were on the correct side of the road to get off.Check in very quick with not airport security as with ocean cruises. cabin as expected same as other ships, we chose the cheapest at the waterline. We only sleep and get changed there. We went with another cou[ple explored the ship. tea and coffee making machines on entrance tot he laounge always working except once when it was being worked on. The ship apart from our deck with only cabins next one up was reception and the main dining room. One deck above was the main lounge with a bar and lots of seating. The back park had a small self service at meal times and on nice days you can sit outside to eat. Above this was the top deck fine views and plenty of seating two mini golf courses and a deck quits. We only used it a couple of days due to the weather. Trips some trips included some you paid for. As far as we could see they all involved walking a bit. Viking coaches at each port to take you to the destinations. First night deal with food later after dinner we went for a walk over the chain bridge fantastic Budapest is a lovely city at night, large buildings a palaces all lit up. Next ay trip round Budapest time on our own when we got back on the ship we were greeted with a soft drink and canapes. Almost all trips get you back for lunch. Sometimes lunch is to make sure you get some. Estergom strudel making very good had as much to eat as we liked. Vienna nice walk around town and time to ourselves to browes the shops that evening we went to a musical recital the best i have ever been to fantastic would recomend. Vienna naxt day We went on our own to Schonbrunn Palace underground there, our director showed us how it worked went round the palace with translators tube back to the town. tube abck to ship cost 42 Euiros for the two of us. The ship wanted 59 each result. Krems went to monastry not bad back for lunch Afternoon cruised the Wachau valley it poured with rain and visibility was poor. Passau trip round not bacd Regensburg Easy walking tour walked back to ship for lunch Nuremberg. Went on the WW2 trip to nazi rally point and courtroom. Very good trip thoroughly enjoyed it Overnight and left for the airport at 7.45 the next morning a bit early. STAFF The best and most helpful of any staff I have come across on any ship or hotel. Absolutely faultless always spoke and could not do enough for you. FOOD very good breakfast in full in dining room or at the front of the ship for continental. Lunch three courses or buffet at the front of the ship. Dinner Three courses or buffet at the front. Not a large choice three items every night and three different ones for main. All the food was very good and plenty of it DRINKS free during lunch or dinner weather you had the meals or not no limit to the amount you can have during the set times, the rest you pay for. CABIN got what we paid for our steward mucked us out in the mornings and turned the beds down at night. SHIP almost new could not find a fault with it. ENTERTAINMENT in main lounge pianist every night music we all knew. There is a small dance floor buit most of the time he did not play music you could dance to. Pity. We had a humorous german lesson, german/Austrian music, and a presentation about Viking cruises. The choice of music was nice to listen to but a few of us wanted to dance. Was it good value? A balance of excellent itinerary, cost and type of venue. Everything was as advertised. The docking location in Budapest was excellent, right next to the Chain Bridge on the Buda side of Budapest. It was quite scenic. Each included tour was conducted very professionally by knowledgeable tour professionals. Viking River buses provided transportation from the riverboat to the starting point of the cruise. Also there were two versions of each included tour. One for those that wanted to see and experience everything and one for those that wanted to take it a bit slower, i.e., for those that might have a walking disability, etc. Each stop on the itinerary was very interesting and had both cultural as well as culinary value. During the evenings while in transit, Viking provided local cultural entertainment, including dancers, singers, folk costumed performers for many of the locations/countries visited. Other evenings the Cruise Director and Staff provided an overview of the daily activities for the coming day as well as insight into language and local customs. Although this was our first Viking Riverboat Cruise, it certainly will not be our last. Read Less

Having taken a number of land individual and group tours in Europe, including Prague, Budapest and Vienna in 2001, I and my travel companion wanted to experience a more relaxing time, avoiding multiple overnight stays in different hotel rooms. Except for the initial add-on of 3 days in Prague, it truly was a wonderful, informative and relaxing experience river cruising. I consider every place visited in Germany, Austria and Hungary to have been special - the WWII sites in Nuremberg, a BMW assembly plant, the cathedral organ in Passau, the museums and cafes of Vienna, and superbly scenic and historic Budapest. The final highlight was the evening cruise on the Danube in Budapest. Food service was top notch, the cabin comfortable and well designed and I rate the entertainment director very highly. He was professional, well informed and always helpful in answering questions and suggesting ideas for port explorations. The Viking River Cruise had been recommended by several of our "traveling friends". We were disappointed to find that the itinerary caters to a more sedentary customer. The staff was quite pleasant and the boat was clean and comfortable...but do not book one of the suites---there is no special service for you once you are on board---just a bigger room. The posts visited were quite interesting but there is more time spent on motor coaches than seeing the sights and very limited walking and time in the fresh air. The food on board was adequate but lacked diversity and could benefit from more healthy choices on the menu. This cruise is designed for a non active crowd that is spending their days sitting on buses and at dining tables and is not interested in learning about the region. I would consider these things when choosing Viking. Great staff, clean and well appointed rooms but work to be done on the excursions, entertainment and dining. Read Less

Had never been on a cruise and friends recommended a river cruise, specifically Viking. Viking staff took care of everything from the moment we arrived in Nuremberg until they saw us off at the Budapest airport. The room was clean, looked quite new, and was well designed and appointed. It was great to unpack and stow the suitcases under the bed until departure. All aspects of the room were well designed to be compact but allow for room to move around, store clothing in drawers and closet, and take care of all bathroom needs. Had a nice view through the sliding glass door. The ship itself provided for reading and computer usage in a library, indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge for entertainment and socializing, an upper deck with seating and several games, a concierge to help with sightseeing plans, and a person in charge of all the tours and activities, with a daily briefing in the lounge so that we always knew what the next day held. The dining was excellent, with options that included full meals, light meals, and snacks as well as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and a full bar. For each meal there were many options to include coverage of all tastes and diets; everything we ate was well prepared and seasoned. Shore excursions were varied and included tours of towns, cities, and abbeys/cathdrals (including an organ concert in Passau), a ferryboat ride, and making strudel, as well as a variety of optional activities. We spent 2 days in Vienna and got to make a stop prior to reaching Budapest while spending just 1 day as part of the cruise ashore at the beginning and end of the trip. We been to both Budapest and Bamberg/Nuremberg on prior cruises. We crave the time on board and the beauty of the river and the towns/villages along the way. We so look forward to dinner in the dining room. We make friends with so many people - passengers and crew alike. Viking always give us fantastic service. We were upgraded from a French balcony to deluxe veranda and loved it. Either cabin would have been fine but it's nice to have a balcony to take pictures from. To start, we've cruised Viking before and discovered it to be a far superior and personal cruise line than many of their competitors. Cruising up the Danube from Budapest is probably one of the most scenic river cruises in the world. It was not only relaxing, but Viking docks almost every morning for an included tour of the local area sharing with us the local culture, and in many cases encouraging us to interact with the locals. It's always positive and fun. We also enjoy Viking's attitude towards it's passengers. They are always there to help and explain anything to us. The crews attitude is "you are on vacation, and we are here to make sure you enjoy yourself". I asked on our first Viking cruise, "do I have to dress up for dinner?'. Numerous responses to me were, "your on vacation, so dress casual and enjoy yourself" (I might add, they killed all future desire to ocean cruise ever again). Our cruise director is always there to explain what is happening when you pass through interesting areas and river locks, etc. We never felt so pampered, it was almost as if they couldn't do enough to please us (not that we expected this approach). The Viking Egil captain, as very busy man, was personable and always happy to explain ship operations, etc. This trip was taking by only my wife and me. Our children are all grown and we encourage them to try Viking too. Read Less

I had heard so many wonderful things about Budapest, Vienna and Prague from friends who travel extensively. And nothing but kudos for this particular Viking trip. My friend and I had never chosen cruises for our previous trips but the river variety was perfect to suit our needs, in contrast to the huge ocean voyages. We found the staff of our boat friendly, knowledgeable and always there when we needed them. The food was beyond excellent and the staff was accommodating to passengers with special needs and diets. The combination of guided tours with a great deal of independent time was perfect for us, as we love to explore on our own, as well as spend time with local guides. We are planning to take another Viking river cruise next year. The choices are numerous and there is such a big, exciting world "out there". Viking certainly offers a multitude of choices that include those factors we savor on our trips: vibrant history, unusual and representative architecture, art and music of the area, foods to try..... (By the 2nd day servers knew our names, drink preferences). Our room while small...but who wants to spend time in the room...had an extremely comfortable bed and nice bath. Plus every time we left the room, Ivan was just steps away, always with a smile, and immediately replaced towels and cleaned...we wondered if he ever slept! Regensburg, Passau, Vienna and Budapest were great venues to explore and deserve return visits when we can spend more time... Especially Budapest. It was so different and while we had high expectations, it was even better than we expected. Then entire trip was casual, relaxed and an over all great experience. We will do more river cruises and see no reason to use any other line than Viking. Read Less
