We chose scenic as they are supposed to be one of the best. So, the positives - NIce looking ship, cabins comfortable if a little small, good bathrooms, - Staff on the whole are excellent and work very hard. - Pleasant lounge area. -Good selection of excursions. - Good entertainment when there was some. The Negatives - It was the worst food I have had on any cruise ship. It looked pretty but was not very good. The vegetable were invariable undercooked and inedible. We were served undercooked fish, uncooked pasta, food either under or over seasoned. All desserts seem to come with squirty cream. We had maybe 5 good meals out of 14. It advertises 4 dining venues..this is not so. There is the main Crystal dining room (1) within which it seems that there is a table they call La Rive(2) for the people in the superior cabins . Portobellos (3) is in a separate area of the lounge. You get 1 evening invitation for this set menu which got very mixed reviews on board. They have a very (1 dish) limited lunch buffet. The River Cafe(4) is, in effect a glass cabinet by the bar where they have a 2 squares of dried up sandwiches (usually ham and cheese), panini of the day which was so dry it just crumbled away when I bit into it. A wrap (the best of the options) and some small dessert options. - Butler Service- In reality there are a couple of people who you could call if you wanted say, more hangers. Most of the time they act as waiters. Numerous people we spoke to were not even aware of how to call them and had never seen them despite being told that they would come and introduce themselves on arrival. - The excursions were OK but the city tours were painfully slow and generally only offered a limited view. eg. Cologne tour consisted of standing at 4 or 5 points around the cathedral and pointing out the train station(next to the cathedral) - The cruise director was quite amusing in his talks but if you asked him anything outside of that he was not over helpful. - Entertainment was limited and we all felt that maybe some quizzes (there was 1) would have been good. All in all I would not travel with scenic again. I think they are overpriced for what you get. We also always seemed to have the worst docking compared to other lines. If you like to drink then there are unlimited drinks which you can indulge 24/7 and some people clearly did. Just to finish by saying practically everyone on the ship was ill with a flu type illness. Apparently the previous cruise also had the same problem. This does beg the question how clean everything is. Not helped by there being only 1 public toilet. Read Less

Advertising led expectations that were not fulfilled. 1. Never docked near any major city attraction, 2. Going over and through other boats at dockside was difficult, 3. Long walks to buses which delivered you at great distances from your attraction. 4. Cabins very small. Limited storage space for clothing 5. Staff excellent, very attentive 6. Food spotty at times 7. This would have been an excellent value for money if not for the problems stated above. 9. Cruise director superior and well organized. Having to change from one boat to another in mid cruise was difficult since it necessitated totally packing up and leaving a crew that was starting to work well with the passenger core. This necessitated working with a new ships crew who in spite of efforts to be friendly showed some resentment at the passenger switch. When docked in tandem with any Viking ship, we were not allowed to pass through their lobby. This meant difficulty transferring their ship in order to get on shore. This only occurred with Viking ships. All others allowed us to pass through their lobby. 0ther boat personnel were happy to assist with our transit. Read Less

Due to a lock closure, we were transferred from Jasper to Ruby from a deluxe balcony suite to a balcony suite. We found a cheque from Scenic on our return home without a covering letter and were disappointed with the amount since it was far smaller than the one received from Emerald (this was for a much smaller inconvenience caused by low water levels in 2015). The suite on the Jasper was very nice except for a tiny basin which made it difficult to shave without bumping into the shelf above the basin. The basin on the Ruby was far better in size. On this trip the gentle walkers should have been assigned to a coach before leaving the ship rather than trying to find the right group when all the coaches arrived at their destination on shore. At least one tour guide was unsympathetic to the "gentle" group and was more concerned in covering her tour at a normal pace. We hoped to see the horses in action at the Spanish riding school in Vienna but nobody told us the horses rest on Mondays even though we booked this option months ahead!! Other than the above, the excursions were very interesting, entertainment on board was very good (except for the pair from Vienna who did not perform much Viennese songs). The waltz lesson and the Sound of Music features were particularly very good. Great care was taken with respect to our diet which included a daily printout of what is allowed from the menu. In both ships, the cabin crew were first class. Disembarkation was very well organised. It would be better to include port charges in the price of a tour rather than be surprised at the time of booking about the extra cost. Read Less

An acquaintance recommended Scenic to me. We chose the Danube cruise with the Prague extension. Our first problem was arriving at Frankfurt airport: there was a holiday in Germany and as a result three long delays to get to our gate, so we missed our flight. Then Prague was unseasonably cold and many of us were not dressed for it. We had many upsides in Prague. The breakfast buffet was really excellent at the Marriot and the tour guide gave us insight into Czech culture given the Hapsburgs, Hitler, and Soviet invasion and domination. Due to low water levels, we were bussed from Prague to Passau, rather than to Regensburg and at the end of the cruise, we had to be bussed to Budapest, instead of cruising. We covered less than 30% of the river than planned! Scenic are compensating many of the passengers with a small refund. The itinerary changed very little from the plan: we had less time in Budapest, a stunning city, and we had the added option of exploring Passau, a very beautiful town. Regensburg was also very interesting. I was disappointed by the tours of Melk Abbey, Saltzburg and Vienna. The concert at Vienna was excellent. Mostly we cruised during the night but we did see the Wachau Valley which is truly beautiful. The breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent, while a la carte dinners were a bit mixed. When we eat at other locations it was also mixed. On the whole, I think Scenic staff did the best they could to entertain us and provide a 5 star experience. The meals on the boat and otherwise need some tweaking, and they now seem to be warning customers about low water levels in advance. Read Less

Cruise had a great crew especially the Cruise Director, Richard Grey. Hotels in Prague and Budapest were good and well positioned in their cities. Food and service were good. Our guide in Prague was especially good. The Tailor Made devices are a good idea but don't work consistently. Scenic and all other cruise companies were impacted by low water levels on the Danube and although we were assured by customer service prior to our departure that the worst outcome would be a ship swap and that we would not be spending a lot of time on buses, we did in fact spend most of our week on buses. As it turned out, the only times we spent on this river were from Passau to Melk and from Melk to Vienna. We understand this was out of Scenic's control due to water levels. However, we missed our excursion to Nuremberg as we would have been on a bus for 8 hours to get there and back. It was two hours each way to Regensberg and we never did get to cruise the river from Vienna to Budapest and had to be bused there as well. We also missed out on a tour of the village outside Budapest. Again, we understand this was caused by low river water levels. However Scenic's River Cruise Guarantee in the form of compensation was totally inadequate. In the end, we received compensation for less than 10% of the value of our cruise. We paid luxury cruise prices for a river cruise that turned out to be more of a bus tour and we certainly did not receive 90%+ value for money. When i returned from our trip, i contacted customer service to register a complaint and was told that someone would respond that day. No one called. I was told to send an email to their customer service department and got an automated response that they would get back to me in two business days. I had to call them on the 4th day to get some action. In their River Cruise Guarantee, their Terms and Conditions state that they will not pay for claims arising directly or indirectly from: Consequential loss of any kind including loss of enjoyment.Their financial response to our loss of enjoyment is an insult to their customers. Their assumption that there is equivalency between a river cruise and a series of bus trips shows a complete lack of concern for a travelers enjoyment. If you are considering Scenic for your next cruise, be aware that if the trip goes off the rails even if it is not their fault such as river levels, they are not concerned about your loss of enjoyment as evidenced in the compensation that was offered. we have had a good experience with Avalon and we will go back to them on our next cruise. For anyone looking at this review, i would check out Avalon for your river cruise. Read Less

We had to join this boat after spending some 8 hours transferring from the Jade to join Jasper. So we had an early start to go to Salzburg and then onto see the Sounds of Music show up in the mountains, that said we had very little time to explore Saltzburg which was a shame, it was rushed, The actual show was better than the previous show we experienced at Marksburg Castle, more refined and the food/drink was much better. The actual Austrian orchestra and singers were very good. After leaving the show we had a reasonably long coach drive to Melk where we joined the Jasper, when we arrived at the docking area the boat crew were having to man handle every suitcases along the jetty to the boat which did not do the suitcases any favours. We were met on board by the some of the crew and were offered drinks etc. Our first night in the dining room was not that great, service was even slower than on the Jade taking some 2 hours to get all courses. The actual Dining room/Lounge staff did not seem to gel together as well as the crew on the Jade. Again as on the Jade the portions coming out were not that great and one had to have all servings to feel reasonably full. Drinks at times were a problem to get either at the dining table or in the lounge area. We had been looking forward to eating at the Table La Rive, we had heard from some fellow passengers of their experience on the Jade and they spoke very well of their experience. However this was a complete opposite for us, there was only 4 other guests seated when we arrived. The butler who was dedicated to go through the serving was not as good as we had observed on the Jade. What ruined it for us was the other 2 couples who to be frank lacked the basic manners when eating with other people, one couple kept getting up and talking to some people they had met, and shouting from our table to them. The other couple were down right rude, complaining to the butler about their food and after asking the butler to change their dessert, simply got up and left without goodbye. When the butler returned we their desserts he asked where they had gone. He was not a happy bunny. So a lesson to be learnt here, we should have asked who we were going to be seated with before the night we had been booked to go to this venue. So sadly we had this ruined by other people! The cruise itself was well organised, as said previously on the Jade our tour director Andrea was excellent. Scenic did pull out all the stops to get us along the danube to Budapest which they accomplished. All the excursions a dn sites we experienced were very well mamagned. Final our disembarkation was the very best we have ever experienced again down to lot to Andrea, pity Oceania were not the same. Read Less

We were given a recommendation by our travel agaent to try this cruise line for the Danube River cruise. We have done a lot of ocean cruising so this was our first river cruise. I was shocked at how expensive it was. We arrived in Prague and only then did we hear that we would not be sailing from Nuremberg. We did do a 4 hour guided walking tour the first day. No meals other then breakfast were included. We were on our own for the next day and a half. We were bus to Passau 4 hour bus rise. Our room was very small. We paid for a balcony room which was not worth the money because we were only on the river for a very short few hours and at night we were sandwiched between two other boats. No view at all. The tour director apologized several times to us for not being told of the change. But what can you do Mother Nature has a mind of her own. We met some lovely people (the highlight of the trip). The booze was flowing and people started to unwind. The meals were OK nothing fabulous or exceptional. Just OK. The staff were pleasant but the ship had limited staff so the serve was very slow. Most nights it took us more then an hour to be served. At times people got up and got their own wine or beverage. The entertainment was what you can expect on a river cruise. The pianist was very talented. The excursions were good. Lots of bus travelling because of our location. Sometimes 6 hours of our day was on a bus. The guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. The places we saw were wonderful. I personally was not impressed. I would not do another river cruise. Read Less

As a 40th anniversary trip. We made our own arrangements to get to Budapest and to return home from Amsterdam. We were told by Scenic UK to phone the Jade (which should have been our ship) to find her dock on the Monday. While out walking in Budapest on Sunday we saw the Scenic Jasper to ask if they knew where Jade was docking? The lady at reception looked bemused and said Jade is not due but made a phone call to check and said she was not due....she then asked for our name, then said we were due to board her ship Jasper the following day!! The ship had changed due to low water levels but we had not been notified. We complained via our travel agent about the lack of communication and eventually had a phone call from Scenic UK, the gist being that we had sorted ourselves out so what was the problem! Not exactly 5* customer service, especially as it cost us £14k+. Similar responses after the cruise...no real apology just excuses that HQ in Australia had the information but UK did not! Also our cabin was being changed so UK were waiting for detail....as far as I could tell, we had the same grade of cabin we had booked? They probably knew a week earlier of the ship change as that was probably the location where the ship change probably took place but they do not like to publish that!! We heard the return cruise from Amsterdam was likely to have 3 ship changes! Having said all that, we were on the Jasper for 1 week from Monday 23 July then met up with the Jade on Sunday 29 July. Both ships were excellent and the Cruise Director Cathy (Kathy) and the rest of the crew were all hardworking and friendly with great service. Ship change was so slick although all the suitcases had to be repacked and they were taken from our cabin and were waiting for us on the Jade!! We just went on our tour for the day and were taken back to the Jade! Excursions were well-organised and included more than usually described. Would happily recommend the cruise and ships but not the back-up organisation in UK, etc. Will not be using them again, life is too short! Read Less

I have been on other ocean cruises & river cruises and this time chose Scenic as I was told it was premium quality and a step up from the other European river cruise companies. So maybe my expectation was too high as so far this is no better than Gate One cruises which are about half the costing. The food is ok but nothing superior. The service is mediocre and could be improved. As an example - the first day when you arrive you are told to go and have a drink in the lounge and they will call you when your cabin is ready. This was just not true. We waited & waited like all the others but then noticed that all you needed to do was go and register with your passport and you could get your key. This was frustrating and others were also not sure of the process. Another example was on day 2 in Cologne when we asked a Scenic person helping the scan out process - where did we go for the castle tour or where did we go for the city your? The Scenic people didn’t know but just wanted to scan us off the ship. Fortunately outside there were guides who we could ask and get some sort of help. It’s not realy a big problem but definitely nothing ‘superior’ about the Scenic service or Scenic food . So in summary ,the only advantage for the extra money you pay is the free minibar and drinks being available all through the day at no cost. Next time I would save a couple of thousand dollars and book with one of the medium priced cruises on offer. Read Less

We chose this cruise due to it's interesting combination of ports as well as the date. This was our second river cruise - our first was on Viking. We chose Scenic for our second cruise for several reasons: The enrichment activities seemed interesting The electric-assist bikes The potential to do tours on our own using the GPS devices (Scenic Tailormade) Overall we thought the cruise features as well as the cruise staff indicated a good intent, but execution was lacking in several areas. In particular they had significant issues at dinner. Since dinner is very important on cruises overall rating reflects issues in this area. We spent 1 night at a hotel in Nuremberg to recover from jet-lag. The hotel selected by Scenic (Le Meridian) was in an excellent location, allowing easy access to the old city. Embarkation was very smooth. Embarkation was smooth as to be expected on a river-cruise. We were guided to the lounge to wait for check-in. My wife and I noticed we were not offered champagne like other who had arrived on a large bus but we didn't feel it was a big deal. Excursions were similar to what we had seen on Viking. Bus transportation was efficient. The guides were very knowledgeable but tended to go longer/slower than my wife and like but we realize they have to cater to all types. Scenic did an excellent job accommodating those who could not walk well without slowing down the others. As an example, in one venue there was a long walk to the bus. They had a van to shuttle those who needed it to the bus which was nice. We enjoyed the ScenicEnrich concert. The small orchestra was very talented and the singers/dancers good as well. We also enjoyed the night sailing in Budapest to see the lights. In Regensburg we tried the Scenic Tailormade to do a self-guided tour. The concept is intriguing - it shows a map of the town with the interesting sites. When you get to a site you can select it and get commentary. The reality was that the commentary was very silly and irritating. During a day cruise the cruise director put on the commentary over the loudspeakers and this was much better so perhaps it was just the commentary for Regensburg. It was nice seeing Nuremberg but in the end may not have been worth it - when sailing away from Nuremberg you are in a canal for a day with not much to see and only the front of the sundeck open due to low bridges. Breakfast and lunch were served buffet style, and there was a lot of different choices. We also saw wait staff respond well to cruisers with dietary needs. I would rate the quality of the food good for these meals. They insisted on serving coffee to everyone at breakfast, and sometimes it could take a while to get coffee (up to 10 min) when you first sat down with your food. Toward the end of the cruise we would find a waiter with the coffee and ask him to serve us. I've never had to do that at a Denny's much less what is supposed to be a nice eating atmosphere. The coffee machine in the lounge made excellent Cafe Americano and a couple of times I was tempted to walk over there to get my coffee! Service and quality of food at dinner, however, became a big irritation on this cruise. On the whole the appetizers and desserts were good to very good. The entrees and soups were VERY bland. The worse part of dinner was the wait to get the entree. There were many cases where 2 tables would be seated at approximately at the same time, but one table would be served much faster, to the point where one table would be finishing dessert and the other hadn't been served their entree. It really came to a head on the night the chef-recommended entree was chateaubriand. We had to wait ~30 minutes to get the entree. The steak was cooked to a correct doneness, but had no spice (not even salt), was very dry and chewy. It was the worst steak I have had in my life. I asked other passengers about this and they said similar things. The quality of service at dinner ended up being talked about during the cruise because it had become so irritating over the week. We met some nice people from the UK and noticed they always sat at the same table. When we asked why they replied they seemed to get the food faster there! On the last night of the cruise a woman walked over to another table to check if they had received their entrees as her table had been waiting so long. I've never seen that before on a cruise. In one case my wife ordered coffee after dinner - after waiting 15 minutes we left. Note that even when service was OK dinners lasted between 90 minutes and 2 hours so I am not expecting fast-food service! I believe the issue may be the kitchen having to support two distinct menus - the main dining room and Table Le Rive. Service was better at Portobellos when we ate there though the food really wasn't as special as they seemed to think it was. I spoke to the hotel manager about the service situation and he was very open to the feedback but in the end something needs to be done as it became a big irritation. We also saw slow service at times in the lounge. The waiters were working hard, and the bartender was fast, but it would take a while to be served when you first arrived. There just didn't seem to be enough wait staff. I started going directly the the bar to get quicker service. Quality of liquor choice was good (eg, single malt Scotch included Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie). The cruise director seemed very friendly when giving his port talks. I would say however that he tended to over-sell things like the food was unbelievably good and the excursions life changing. It's better to undersell and over-deliver. In private conversation he could seem off-putting and gave the impression you were interrupting what he was doing. I understand his position is difficult and it could be a cultural issue but other passengers remarked about this as well. He did arrange a private tour of Budapest for my wife and I, and that went fine. Read Less

We chose Scenic as it came highly recommended, we had relatives who were going so we thought we would join them. We were told that Scenic has high end ships and service so we’re looking forward to our cruise. Perhaps our hopes were too high. The food was anything but high quality, just average and some nights not even that. We have been on several ocean cruises and enjoyed excellent food so thought that the food on this smaller river cruise would be the same not so. The crew for the most part did not seem happy, nervous and up tight. There were a couple of crew members that put a lot of effort into their jobs. Adrian and Milos. This was our second river cruise with Scenic, the first being an 8 day Danube in 2016 where all the stops were pulled out, from roses presented to each guest upon arrival to constant phenomenal onboard and offship evening entertainment to very personalized cabin service. So we had a benchmark for comparison on this cruise at tulip time on Netherlands/Belgium route. We were overall somewhat disappointed. Embarkation was smooth but no roses or even tulips this time. Varied buffet meals, snack bar, dinner foods nicely presented, food ranging from average to very good in quality. Excellent table service. Same evening cocktail lounge singer with digital background noise quickly became monotonous, but staff did their best with limited resources to make our evenings onboard enjoyable. Lounge seating could have been more comfortable. Excellent day tour options. 2nd deck balcony suite spacious, well appointed bathroom, comfortable bed. Butler and cabin attendant kept low profile, not sure they even recognized us after check in introduction. In general we did not feel the value or quality of experience was up to what we know Scenic can produce. It certainly lacked the feeling of absolute luxury we enjoyed on the Danube river cruise and we doubt we would travel with them again. Read Less

This cruise was advertised as a 5-star cruise with world-class delicious meal. We certainly paid the cost for a 5-star cruise, but the food was 2-star!! We booked this Christmas cruise 18 months ahead of time. It had the makings of a great cruise. Great destinations, lovely Christmas markets, great Tour Guide, Richard, great Butler Robert and the major of the crew provided very good service. But the food!!!! We had travelled on Scenic before and could make a comparison about the food. Problems: Luke-warm a lot of the time Lack of healthy options for lunch in River Café (eg. fresh fruit and vegetable juices, interesting healthy salads). We usually found it was watery soup, ordinary pasta or sandwiches. Some meals were better than others. Few meals that related to the countries we visited. Little Christmas food types. A couple of biscuit types but nothing special. Christmas lunch was buffet style with all the passengers in one sitting. We had to wait a very long time for a few prawns. There were no Christmas crackers, no roast Christmas dinner, no delicious Christmas pudding or other Christmas slices or rum balls. This was very disappointing. When our friends and family asked about the cruise, we had them how disappointing this had been. Other friends suggested we try APT where the food was good. The day was only saved by the good company on board. The alcohol was free flowing. Too free flowing at times where you had to ask the waiter what was the wine that they constantly tried to fill up your glass with. The ship ran out of some of the wines at times. They also ran out of some of the cocktail mixes and liquors at times. We both had one cocktail each on the cruise, but it had far too much alcohol in it and it lacked finesse. When we asked to pay for a very good bottle of champagne for Christmas the choice was one and ordinary. On returning home and looking at Cruise Critic we realised that Scenic Jasper had had other complaints about the food. We complained to our travel agent and there was no compensation of any kind from Scenic. We would certainly think twice about using Scenic again, unless the quality of the food improves. Read Less

Despite this cruise being advertised by the Daily Telegraph, booking and payment were made to Scenic and as a platinum member we received all of the normal Scenic benefits, so naturally we expected everything to be as good as all of the other times that we have travelled with Scenic. The ship was beautifully presented in a modern style as usual; the majority of the staff were as efficient and helpful as usual; the included expertly guided tours to Budapest/ Melk Abbey and Cesky Krumlov were excellent as usual and the coaches were immaculate as usual BUT the food was way below the usual 5 star standard. As some friends had joined us on this cruise having listened to us rave about the fantastic food that was always served on board, this was particularly embarrassing. The degustation menu served on the invitation night at La Rive was very good but the experience was so much better when a round table was used because it was much easier for people to converse. The dinner served at Portobellos was average. The food on the lunch time buffet, apart from one or two dishes was also average. We had an alternative choice of steak a couple of times and it was perfectly cooked. The food did improve slightly on the last couple of days when the guest speaker, Mary Berry, joined the ship. Each cabin was given one copy of her latest book 'Household Tips and Tricks', which, considering that most of the people on board were over 60 was not perhaps the best choice. Her latest cookbook would have been more appropriate. She was very interesting and friendly and chatted with everyone and signed autographs, but when she had one of the chefs on board make 3 pastries as per her recipes, 2 of them were a disaster. There were also some timing issues with a couple of the excursions and the 'tailor made devices'. There were a fair number of people on this cruise that had never travelled with Scenic before and I heard a number of them say that they would have expected higher quality food on a ship that is at the top end of river cruising. If I hadn' t been on other Scenic cruises I would be unlikely to repeat the experience. Read Less

Scenic Jasper Budapest to Amsterdam 2017 (Oct18 to Nov 1). Cabin 203 – Junior Suite As I sit here early in the morning two days before the end of our cruise – and docked beside another river boat, I have no idea what the weather is like as it’s very dark in our cabin. If I want, I can look at the closed curtains of the cabin in the ship beside me, but I choose to watch the Bow Cam. Now, this has only happened about 3-4 times, but when it does, it’s pretty disappointing. A dark room without any kind of view. Our cabin is wonderful. It’s a little tight compared with a Junior Suite on an ocean cruise ship, but it’s laid out well with room for all of our belongings (4 regular size suitcases and two carry-ons). Yes, we bring much too much luggage, but everything is put away and there is still room. As well, all of our luggage easily fits under the bed. We have done many ocean cruises, but this is our first river cruise, and we found it quite different. Unlike some others, we go on cruises to exercise and to relax from stressful jobs. We do like to socialize some, but we also really like our time together. On larger ships we don’t spend a lot of time going to Bingo, napkin folding, dance lessons, and the like, but we get why others enjoy those things. What we have found is that a river cruise is pretty busy with tours and socializing. There’s really not that much down time, unless you get sick . . . which we did. I should start by saying our Premium Economy flights were included with the ‘special’ that we got through Scenic. I had booked these flights (through Scenic) 9 months before our departure and wanted to get nice seats as the flight is around 10 hours and is such a part of the whole journey for us. I love flying. Two days prior to departure I confirmed our seats with Lufthansa, but when I went on-line to check in, although we were still booked in Premium Economy, we had been moved from our window and aisle seats to two middle seats in a line of four seats. Right in the Centre with neither is us having an aisle seat. I spent a good two hours on the phone with Lufthansa (cut off twice) where they basically said that they couldn’t help me but to speak with someone at the gate. Long story short, we were told that we didn’t ‘pay’ for our seats and they would do nothing for us, but smiling, asked “Do you want to upgrade to Business Class for 1025.00 each?” Ummm no. I asked her if there was a possibility that someone might upgrade to Business and there might be other premium economy seats available? We were advised to check back which we did, and the lady we met with was much easier to deal with. She would upgrade the both of us for a total of 1025.00. We said yes, as this was a once in a lifetime trip and we really wanted to enjoy the flight. The flight was great but we arrived to find one of our bags lost and when they found it, it was broken apart. There was no offer to replace our luggage, and we were too tired to push for it - our Scenic transportation had left so we took a cab to our hotel. The following day, our one full day in Budapest, was spent looking for luggage. We actually enjoyed this outing as we got in some sightseeing! Budapest – we stayed at the Marriott and it was a wonderful hotel. We found Budapest, the city, to be beautiful, stunning, and warm. T-shirt weather, which we weren’t really expecting. The morning we were to board the Scenic we were told to be downstairs in the hotel lobby (with many others) at 11, and after checking in with Scenic personnel we were told to hang around until 4 when we would be taken to the Jasper. Some people were disappointed with that, but we were in a wonderful city and we just went with it. Our first 5 cruise days went well – we went on tours, met some great people and enjoyed the ship. Day 4 we had gone on the ‘Shop with the Chef’ tour in Vienna and the weather started to change. We had a nice day but it did rain a bit and started to get noticeably colder. I noticed that I was coming down with a cold. By the next morning, my coughing had me convinced that 5 hours on a bus the next day to and from Salzburg wouldn’t be great for my fellow passengers and we decided to forgo this much anticipated tour. But, as Marie Von Trapp said, “When the Lord closes a door, somewhere he opens a window”, and he did! Looking back, that day on the boat from Vienna to Dürnstein was the most beautiful scenery that we saw on this trip. It was incredible. About 16 of us had stayed behind on the boat and we had it to ourselves. An incredible day. Anyway, my husband got sick the following day (with Bronchitis we think) and ever since then we have been trying hard to keep our distance from others so as to not pass on what we have. It turns out that a fair number of people have colds on the boat. The thing is, on this small ship in this weather, there are only two places to go during the day if not on a tour – your cabin or the Lounge. And you know, colds, flu – that happens sometimes when you’re on vacation. It’s not fun but we’ve accepted it and are just trying to make the most of everything. But the strange thing that we noticed (others have as well) is that staff (bar staff, restaurant staff, front desk staff) have not asked how we are, when we see them. We know of a gentleman who has been confined to his cabin with the flu and no one has visited him or asked his wife how he is doing. There has been no talk encouraging people to use hand sanitizers so as not to spread anything around, like they do on the larger ships. It’s a little shocking actually, and we believe that the staff is most probably told not to ask how people are doing. Because we know, that they KNOW we’re sick – no question. It’s a small ship and everyone gets to know everyone. I was asked once, in passing, by the Cruise Director, but I had gone to her prior to the Salzburg trip to let her know we wouldn’t be going, and as well, let her know about the following tour, until I realized that they really don’t want to know. Odd, and disappointing to be so sick and not have people care. Our fellow passengers do tho, which is nice. Perhaps they are worried about being held responsible in some way? I don’t really understand that. Outstanding staff would be our Butlers, Ivan and Danny, and they were very kind and helpful to us. Anyway, today we are in Cologne, Germany where we will spend one more day getting better before we arrive in Amsterdam tomorrow. We feel somewhat better this morning and are going to go on tomorrow’s tour. Yes we are! Pros - Beautiful and clean ship - Good service - Amazing food Cons - Lack of any empathy or interest when you are sick - even when you are missing tours and dinners. We had to order dinner in on quite a few nights. - Docking beside other boats completely blocking your view - Room service is really lacking, especially healthy food. Menu is really limited. Would we go on this trip again? I don’t know. Maybe in ten years? (We are in our early 60’s and from what we could see, we were probably the youngest on the ship). When we’re ready to be busy every day with tours and socializing and don’t need and want as much down time to ourselves. In all honesty, I think we were ignoring little signals that this might not be the perfect trip for us when we booked. Note to self: Listen to your instincts! We’re looking forward to a few days in Amsterdam, and crossing our fingers that we get the plane seats we booked for our flight home to Vancouver Read Less

A cruise chosen for it's itinerary, we found to be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience marred by three weaknesses 1] a Scenic induced boarding time confusion that caused our cancellation of a Budapest spa experience 2] Instances of poor food ingredient quality ion our judgement, imposed by Scenic cost controls, and 3] A total absence of basic medical equipment, which, given the average age of cruisers, imposes an unusual risk Our dining experiences, one of the key determinants of cruising enjoyment, were,at best, mixed.Breakfasts and lunches, served buffet style, were generally good, the range of offerings were reasonably broad, with high marks for breakfast quality and for cream soups.Dinners, however, were another thing.Evidence of Scenic imposed cost controls was most evident in seafoods, as in the thin, minnowlike sea bass filets, and,in the La Rive degustation Osso Bucco where the required veal appeared more akin to an aged cow.A one sitting timing was also a disappointment, although the wait team, to a man and a woman, worked with an amazing determination to make the experience enjoyable, serving with humor and grace throughout the trip.We found the wines also not to live up to the advertised premium quality. Cannot speak too highly of Cathy, the Cruise Director, whose enthusiasm and unfailing willingness to offer aid to any need was highly creditable. Similarly, the cabin crew whereas in the case of our butler,Dian, there promptly and always smiling, with help when called upon -- even, in one case, at 5.00am resultant upon my wife's medical emergency.Cabin housekeeping was both thorough and unobtrusive Our cabin,a deluxe balcony, was comfortable and well appoiinted, though the overlapping closet doors were a nuisance The tours and special events were enjoyable and the guides generally excellent.in one case we chose to pursue an individual trip into the Czech Republic, for which Cathy arranged that Sebastian Frankenurger lead us -- a wonderful individual with extensive experience and a great sense of humour. The private concerts were universally of a high standard and thoroughly enjoyable. The vaunted GPS devices too often stopped operating and were therefore more a burden than an aid. In sums pleasant experience with crew of whom we cannot speak too highly, and, cofortable well appointed cabin and public space accommodations. That notwithstanding we would question the promotion of the offering being of premium quality, dinner and wines legislating against that concept. We love the relaxed and intimate atmosphere of river cruising, making new friends, meeting old friends with normally faultless service and excellent food and wine. We enjoy visiting new places, seeing new vistas and experiencing new cultures without the formality of the grand cruise liners. Scenic Jasper is a beautiful river boat, only two years old and carrying up to 163 passengers. Our panoramic suite was large and the balcony superb. Room service is normally excellent. This is our third cruise with scenic, but for some reason things never gelled from the start. The hotel staff seemed under pressure, understaffed and unhappy. Having to continually ask for coffee at breakfast, or wine for dinner is just no longer up to standards we look forward to with other cruise companies we have travelled with. Many of the meals were self service buffet creating a scrum with a full boat. On several occasions there was no food left and we had to ask and wait for more. We have eaten as well at motorway service stations. The wines were variable, some excellent some poor. The bar staff however were superb with cocktails to die for. The Rhine itself is of course a busy commercial river, so some areas are picturesque while others are industrial. Offshore visits were not wildly memorable and one tour guide was positively rude. The hotel manager was sadly very aloof and offhand. Maybe this filtered down to the staff. Sadly, I feel this may be the last time we cruise with Scenic. Read Less

Chose Scenic at that particularly time to celebrate our 40th Anniversary in my husbands family's heritage - Germany and for me to see Vienna, Spanish Riding School. Sadly they advertise 5 star dinning but it is at best 3 star. Ignored emails for us and our travel agent (6 in total) and we told three people when we boarded that the wife is seriously allergic to all fish and sea food products - I still go served fish 4 days into the trip that did not look like fish and was not ordered. The staff blamed us for not telling the company (we had 3 times) - one response state "we cant guarantee food requests can be met". We were told your met at the airport and taken to the ship. Nope we spent 7 hours in a hotel function room waiting to go to the ship. We had been traveling 35 hours in the same clothes by the time we got on board! All we wanted was our room and shower - but first Scenic crew wanted a lovely meet and greet with champagne - YUK! when your sweaty and dirty from traveling. To many Port calls they go on and on and everyone is expected to attend (at least a couple a day). While the crew handled a difficult time badly (rive closed for few days) the companies options were appalling - cut Vienna to 4.5 hours (the worlds cultural centre) and we had four days in row going to medieval villages - no offense but seen one seen them all - the best one was Rottenberg. There are no picnic baskets as advetised - the crew had never heard of such things. Meal times are ridiculously strict - and tend to over rule travel one would like to do - seriously the first two weeks of our once in a lifetime anniversary trip ruined by living to scheduale we do that for a living! May as well have stayed at work. However, Great Britain and Switzerland were awesome and made up for the cruise - scenic had nothing to do with that part of our trip. PS butler to look after your every whim - rubbish we saw him twice to say hello day 1 and goodbye on day 15. I am told Viking are much better company to travel with. Our Cabin Steward Putu was fantastic!!! Needless to say we thanked him privately. Read Less

We had attended a couple of promotional sessions prior to making our booking. We booked two back to back river cruises expecting them to be much fun and very relaxing. They turned out to be quite tiring with early mornings and late nights and extended bus trips. The entertainment on board is very average in quality and presentation. Just be aware that if anything does go wrong Scenic is quick to distance themselves from any liability. Its is not all bad. The staff are wonderful and there are copious amounts of food and drink. If you are a person who usually travels independently then you may wish to think carefully before embarking on a river cruise. The balcony suite on the third floor was roomy and comfortable. We did hear about the engine noise from passengers who were at the rear of the ship. We did see some wonderful sites. Read Less

We travelled on Scenic's Jasper on the Gems of the Danube River cruise in July 2015. Having cruised on ocean liners several times before, and hearing the hype around Scenic cruise line, we had high expectations. Let me say off the top that overall I'd rate our cruise experience on Scenic about a 2.5 out of 5 and that low score had all to do with the poor quality of the service in the dining room and the less than enticing food. Although the one night we had reservations in the Portabello restaurant, the food AND service was outstanding! Our favourite waiter from that night on was "Luigi" who was not only vastly entertaining but knew what outstanding service meant. With a few exceptions, many of the dining room servers seemed as if they were in training, albeit, most tried hard to please but didn't seem to have the instinct or worse, the training to know what to do. Scenic needs to take the word "luxury" out of their descriptor, at least for the Jasper because we can't comment on any of their other ships. The cabins were nicely appointed with lots of storage, the ship's decor was attractive and the cruise itinerary and ports of call were very interesting. The cruise director, Patrick, was very good, however the captain spoke no English on a ship that had 169 passengers who were mostly English speaking. A few hours after dinner on our first night on board first night a number of people in the group we travelled with were relaxing in the lounge (which by the way, featured an excellent nightly entertainer, Sergio). We asked for snacks and they could only offer us wasabi chickpeas. After much convincing by my husband, the night supervisor was able to scrounge up some sandwiches for us. The bartender in the lounge was also very good. For us the most enjoyable part of the cruise was meeting and getting to know the other guests who mainly hailed from Great Britain, Canada, Australia and the United States, the land excursions, the excellent tour guides, the three day stay at the Marriott in Prague at the end of the river portion of the cruise, the cleanliness of the rooms, and the fact that you truly walk off the ship with having spent zero dollars. One thing to note however, is that although they promoted it as all inclusive, if you preferred a brand of alcohol such as Grey Goose vodka, they either didn't carry it or you had to pay extra. Sort of defeats the purpose, don't you think? And, we never actually met with our so-called butler, he passed us in the hallway on the first day and then we never saw him again. While I am always one to look at the glass as half full, I don't think I could be persuaded to travel on a Scenic River cruise again. Read Less
