Joined friends on a Christmas Market River Cruise. We had booked two nights pre cruise and two nights post cruise in local hotels.Three days before we left home, Scenic changed our hotel from a 5 Star to a 3.5 star hotel. the business office insisted that this was considered an upgrade for us. The two nights were over $650. USD Embarkation as well as disembarkation were very smooth. The cruise director, Richard Gray, could not have been more accommodating. The ship is Lovely, and the cabin adequate. The service level is very high. All the staff were top notch. As there are drought conditions in Europe, the River levels can be an issue. We were prepared pre-cruise, that there could be an alternate itinerary. As it turned out this cruise was the first all season,to make the entire cruise on the river. There is much hype about their special pillows. Problem was that they ran out of the special down pillows on the first day. There is also much hype with regards to the cuisine. They should tone that down a bit. The buffets are good. Much selection for breakfast and lunch. You also have an option of ordering of a "special menu". Menu items were not freshly prepared. In general there is an issue of cold food. If there is a special menu offering Eggs Benedict, it is a reasonable expectation that the dish will be freshly prepared. That was not the case. The eggs were cold and overcooked. The food needs help. Read Less

Wanted to cruise from Budapest to Neuremberg on the Danube. We spent more time on a coach than on the river. In fact we only 'cruised' for 4/5 hours in daylight during the whole 7 days. Please check carefully water levels before you book. We were not advised of any problems until less than 24 hours before departure. We would have expected to be contacted and offered the possibility of cancellation due to the circumstances. Fortunately for us the weather was great and we were able to make good use of the electric bicycles that were available. This enabled us to see some of the countryside along the river. Shuttle bus services were put on which we used to visit local towns. Instead of sitting on a coach for up to 3/4 hours. Remember if you book a balcony suite you could be docked for hours/dayd looking into someone else's balcony on another cruise boat. Talking to other passengers who had cruised with National Geographic before, this partnership left a lot to be desired. Their representatives were very pleasant though. Be very wary if you have an intolerance or allergy to certain foods. My experience was difficult to say the least. Read Less

We chose this cruise line because rated as a "luxury all inclusive" line. Just prior to leaving, we read on Cruise Critic that our ship (the Jasper) was not in position for our cruise. We then called Scenic who confirmed that indeed we would not be on the Jasper (built 2015/2016) but rather on the Crystal (built 2012). We were on this ship for only two nights before we were told we would have to repack to transfer to the Ruby (built 2009). The staff on the Crystal must have known we were only going to be with them for 2 days because they seemed disinterested. The cabins on both these ships were smaller than what we paid for on the newer Jasper. There was also no pool on either ship unlike the Jasper. We have been on 23 ocean cruises with numerous cruise lines and have always found the food satisfactory; this is the FIRST time we have been disappointed with the quality and variety of the food! However, the service on the Ruby exceeded what we experienced on most of our ocean cruises. We understand that low water levels can't be controlled, and we were happy that we didn't get bused from town to town, at no time did anyone from Scenic offer a rebate given we had paid a higher price for booking on the Jasper. Given our experience mentioned above as well as some other minor issues, we will not book another river cruise. Read Less

An acquaintance recommended Scenic to me. We chose the Danube cruise with the Prague extension. Our first problem was arriving at Frankfurt airport: there was a holiday in Germany and as a result three long delays to get to our gate, so we missed our flight. Then Prague was unseasonably cold and many of us were not dressed for it. We had many upsides in Prague. The breakfast buffet was really excellent at the Marriot and the tour guide gave us insight into Czech culture given the Hapsburgs, Hitler, and Soviet invasion and domination. Due to low water levels, we were bussed from Prague to Passau, rather than to Regensburg and at the end of the cruise, we had to be bussed to Budapest, instead of cruising. We covered less than 30% of the river than planned! Scenic are compensating many of the passengers with a small refund. The itinerary changed very little from the plan: we had less time in Budapest, a stunning city, and we had the added option of exploring Passau, a very beautiful town. Regensburg was also very interesting. I was disappointed by the tours of Melk Abbey, Saltzburg and Vienna. The concert at Vienna was excellent. Mostly we cruised during the night but we did see the Wachau Valley which is truly beautiful. The breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent, while a la carte dinners were a bit mixed. When we eat at other locations it was also mixed. On the whole, I think Scenic staff did the best they could to entertain us and provide a 5 star experience. The meals on the boat and otherwise need some tweaking, and they now seem to be warning customers about low water levels in advance. Read Less

The water levels are low in Europe and itinerary disruptions are not the fault of Scenic, however what was controllable by Scenic was not well done for the most part. To Scenic's credit, tour director Richard worked his heart out to try and make the trip enjoyable for all and they are lucky to have him. The cabin was as advertised, small but comfortable. For anyone sailing in fall, skip these ships with the glassed in porch. You lose room and seldom open the windows, especially with all the flies in Passau! Dining was dreadful with food that was poorly prepared or of such small quantity that it became a subject of conversation amongst passengers. Even the specialty restaurant was not as good as the dining room on an Oceania ship. The dining room service was dodgy at best. Getting a second cup of coffee in the morning was near impossible and at supper the service looked like a fire drill with staff running here and there. Put this down to lack of staff. The excursions from day 3 to day 7 were as advertised. The endless bus trips the rest of the days did not make for great outings. e.g. Two hours in Regensburg instead of a day. To sum up, Scenic has very nice brochures but is very poor at delivering on the promise. Read Less

Chose this cruise as I wanted to cruise on the Danube from Nuremburg to Budapest. When we got picked up at Munich aiprort we were told that due to low water we would be bused to Passau so missed a large part of the cruise down the Danube. Then the ship only cruised for half a day during daylight hours. I thought there would be a lot more cruising during the day not at night and the tour descriptor did not make it clear that 90% of the cruising would take place in darkness. Once we got to Vienna again we were told the water was low so we would have to be bussed to Budapest which meant we had to retire early at night to pack our luggage to be taken off the boat at 0800hrs and board the buses at 0830hrs for a three and a half hour drive to Budapest. At Budapest we were taken on a rushed bus tour of Budapest and then taken to a hotel. Our luggage arrived later and again we were rushed to go onto a boat on the Danube for an evening meal. The boat was poor as was the meal. To say we were disappointed from start to finish with this cruise is an understatement. I am sure Scenic would have known about the low water levels on the Danube, the water just does not drop overnight. Scenic should have cancelled this sailing or we should have been made aware that changes would take place before we left the UK with the option to arrange other dates. Very poor Scenic, you put money before your customers. Read Less

Cruise had a great crew especially the Cruise Director, Richard Grey. Hotels in Prague and Budapest were good and well positioned in their cities. Food and service were good. Our guide in Prague was especially good. The Tailor Made devices are a good idea but don't work consistently. Scenic and all other cruise companies were impacted by low water levels on the Danube and although we were assured by customer service prior to our departure that the worst outcome would be a ship swap and that we would not be spending a lot of time on buses, we did in fact spend most of our week on buses. As it turned out, the only times we spent on this river were from Passau to Melk and from Melk to Vienna. We understand this was out of Scenic's control due to water levels. However, we missed our excursion to Nuremberg as we would have been on a bus for 8 hours to get there and back. It was two hours each way to Regensberg and we never did get to cruise the river from Vienna to Budapest and had to be bused there as well. We also missed out on a tour of the village outside Budapest. Again, we understand this was caused by low river water levels. However Scenic's River Cruise Guarantee in the form of compensation was totally inadequate. In the end, we received compensation for less than 10% of the value of our cruise. We paid luxury cruise prices for a river cruise that turned out to be more of a bus tour and we certainly did not receive 90%+ value for money. When i returned from our trip, i contacted customer service to register a complaint and was told that someone would respond that day. No one called. I was told to send an email to their customer service department and got an automated response that they would get back to me in two business days. I had to call them on the 4th day to get some action. In their River Cruise Guarantee, their Terms and Conditions state that they will not pay for claims arising directly or indirectly from: Consequential loss of any kind including loss of enjoyment.Their financial response to our loss of enjoyment is an insult to their customers. Their assumption that there is equivalency between a river cruise and a series of bus trips shows a complete lack of concern for a travelers enjoyment. If you are considering Scenic for your next cruise, be aware that if the trip goes off the rails even if it is not their fault such as river levels, they are not concerned about your loss of enjoyment as evidenced in the compensation that was offered. we have had a good experience with Avalon and we will go back to them on our next cruise. For anyone looking at this review, i would check out Avalon for your river cruise. Read Less

I believed that we were booking a 5 star cruise, we ended up on the worst experience in25 plus ocean cruises. Communication from Scenic was non existent. The day that we were flying to Budapest I called the Scenic office in Vancouver and the rep. Promised to call me when he got into the office. Well, he never called me, but I did receive a call from Nat. Geo. Who told me that we would be transferred from the airport in Budapest to a meeting room at the Marriott hotel where we would await others before we would be bussed to Vienna, a three hour bus ride after an overnight flight from North America. He told me that we would be on the Scenic Amber, which I knew was impossible as she was in Amsterdam, not Budapest. After that the cruise was downhill all the way. No daylight in the stateroom as we were moored to other ships in Vienna. The food was the worst I have experienced, poor choices, very poor quality. The farewell dinner was spaghetti with tomato sauce. I couldn’t believe it! We experienced only 3 hours of daylight sailing. The excursions were not what we were advised when we booked. The Butler was a joke as he was a butler/ waiter/ sailor. The Captain never showed for the Captains welcome cocktail party or the Captains farewell party, yet we did get to see him very often outside the wheelhouse on the sun deck having a smoke. This felt like a Mickey Mouse outfit, my apologies to the mouse, but it felt like we were sailing with a company that was in financial trouble. Read Less

Gems of the Danube river cruise (my husband and I were actual paying cruisers on the Jasper just 11 days ago. We were not compensated in any way to write this review) We did online research of several cruise lines. We were particularly looking at the excursions offered on various cruise lines. We felt Scenic offered a good variety of choices. Some active choices and some less active choices depending on how you're feeling. As expected the excursions were well thought out and executed. When traveling to a particular location we were aboard Volvo coaches. Very nice. Everything on the ship was done on time! Including embarkment and disembarkment, excursions, meals, entertainment, etc. Very nice. I can't say enough about the ship staff/crew. Super friendly! Every time we passed a staff member or had an encounter with one they smiled and greeted us. They genuinely seemed happy to be doing their job. We met some very interesting crew members. Funny and entertaining. Our cruise director was Richard from Yorkshire and he was so funny. He never got flustered either. Each room has a butler. The name of our butler was Graykor and he was very attentive. If you called him with a need he was at your door in a mater of minutes. The Hotel Manager on our ship was Marco and he assured that everything ran smoothly. And let us not forget the bartender. His name was Mikol (pronounced Me-Hi) and he was so funny. We loved getting to know him. I elected to have an optional massage during out first day of cruising to work out the knots from our traveling. The massage therapist did not disappoint. He gave an excellent deep tissue massage. Ahhhhh And the fee was no more then I would have paid here at home. The food! Oh the food. I miss it already. Excellent regional food. Buffet (excellent buffet food) or menu ordering for breakfast and lunch. And a fabulous menu of choices every night. The food and wine were paired as well. Twice during the cruise we received an invitation to a special dinner: Portobellos with restaurant manager Predrag Acimovic, and Table La Rive (for Diamond Deck cruisers) with Executive Chef Antonio Jones. An amazing dining experience with multiple courses. We really enjoyed the nightly entertainment too. Hungarian folk dancers, Viennese Waltz Dancers, Decades Disco with Enzo, Schuplattler Dancers, Trivia Challenge night, Music and dancing every evening throughout the cruise with Enzo at the piano. Last but not lease we made some wonderful friends and exchanged contact information. You know it's a wonderful vacation when you come home with new friends! I highly recommended Scenic Cruise Lines. It met and exceeded our expectations. I realize I used a lot of adjectives & exclamation points - but I'm still enjoying the wonderful memories we made on such a fun cruise! Read Less

We were very fortunate it was a gift from our children for our anniversary. The Cruise Director Richard was wonderful. He bent over backwards to negotiate the low river levels and other small problems. He was a delight in the lounge for the cruise briefings and had a terrific sense of humour. The meals were out of this world. The service and servers were outstanding. Our room was kept clean at all times. Our butler was always available and very affable. The lounge, bar staff and entertainment were exceptional. Now we shall save up for our next cruise with Scenic. We met a lot of wonderful people and had a terrific experience. We will definetly be referring our friends for Scenic. PS The guides and guided tours were great. The coaches were always there for us. The drivers were very polite and professional. Before we left for our tours we were given water or sparkling water and upon our return we were given hot towels and a treat. We have never been pampered so much in our lives. Read Less

We had been on one before and were very happy with it. The service is excellent and we wanted to see places that we had never been to before. We knew that the shore excursions would be interesting and the service on board would be good. There was only one little thing that we found fault with, and that was at breakfast we often had to wait some time before our tea and coffee was served. Other than that the service was excellent. The entire staff on the ship were always friendly, helpful and courteous. In fact one of the waiters, Marko went overboard in providing us with not only good service but he was always entertaining us with quick little stories. We were also always informed of any changes that had to be made and also were always given information about each day’s activities. All our wishes were met and we had a wonderful time. Read Less

Friends choose this cruise. The ship was in very good condition, and the rooms were large for a river cruise and well laid out, shower was good sized. Good points regarding the cruise: Good ports and high quality excursion guides Breakfast and Lunch were easy to serve yourself and there was an abundance of food The local entertainment on the ship was well done, offered on 2 evenings Two concerts that were very well done Truly all inclusive The notes below are observations, please take them as such. Poor points regarding the cruise (some of these will not apply to you, they did to us) Before the cruise Scenic did not communicate with us in regards to changing the ship,(we were originally on the Amber which is one year newer) our documents arrived late (this didn't really matter since you didn't need to have them to get on the ship) and the water was so low that we did not get to one of the ports (they seem to be okay with this it was just a quirk of the river level, however we had paid for insurance for just this reason and were not given a chance to back out and had called repeatedly to ask for updates) The cabin - see below Dining - as a vegetarian I was disappointed in the dinner food. The service was slow and the staff in the dining room was lacking in training. I am not sure with all the changes in itinerary was helpful. The food case at the bar never looked like the pictures. They had an evening meal for each of us in another section and it was called the Portofino restaurant -- the service and food there were excellent and the levet we had expected the entire cruise to be at Director -- He was great, but the constant changes were difficult to keep up with Shore excursions -- these were mainly overview of each area. The concert was lovely, however it had been moved and the dancers were on the main level with the seating so if you a few rows back it was difficult to see. We had an organ concert that was exceptional Public rooms -- these were very nice, however there was really no where in the evening for a group who would like to play cards, you couldn't use the dining room and often the entertainment was loud. All in all, having been on other river cruises I was not as impressed as I had hoped to be for the additional price. Read Less

My wife and I booked an 11-day Scenic Gems of the Danube cruise as a 20th anniversary present to ourselves. It was recommended by my travel agent. This was also a trip that was on our bucket list. Just a few days before leaving for our trip, I was advised by my travel agent that the rivers in Europe were experiencing low water levels due to the hot, dry summer. We were scheduled to be on the Scenic Amber; however, we were told we would likely have to "swap" ships. After arriving in Prague, we were told that we would be on the Scenic Jasper as the Amber was stuck down river due to the low water levels. The ship was to travel down the Danube and stop along the way at cities such as Regensburg, Passau, Melk, Vienna and Budapest. Unfortunately, the low water levels prevented the ship from progressing past Regensburg. None of the river tour companies can control Mother Nature, but how they respond is key. There should have been a contingency plan to swap ships as standard operating procedure, and this did not happen. As a result of the ship remaining in Regensburg, the stops in Passau (including Salzburg), Melk, and Vienna were cancelled and even after the water level rose again, the ship only arrived in Budapest on the very last day when all passengers had to disembark. The company did offer coach rides to Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov. Since we originally had planned to visit Salzburg, we chose the coach ride there, which took hours to get to. As a result, the tour was rushed as we had to be back on the coach for the ride back. The coach rides to Vienna and Budapest were also very long and resulted in tours in which we felt very rushed. We were not able to visit Schonbrunn Palace as we had planned, and the tour guide in Budapest remarked that our tour was the fastest she had ever given. Some passengers were so disappointed at not having had a river cruise that they left the ship early and went home. We decided to stay on the ship and visit as many cities as possible, but it still wasn't the cruise we had hoped for. Each day, the cruise director called us into the lounge to announce the latest decision on what they would offer. This constant state of not knowing added to the stress of our vacation. As the cruise director stated, it was no longer a cruise, but an adventure. The ship itself was fine, although I don't think calling their ships "Spaceships" is justified as our cabin was much smaller than expected, based on the company's description. The service on the ship was fine, although one drink server was very unfriendly from the first day. The food was good, although the breakfast buffet didn't change. All beverages were included, which is nice as this is not the case on most ocean cruises. Read Less

It looked luxurious and was all inclusive, albeit very expensive. Paperwork from Scenic was very thin and confusing. Ship was changed a week or so beforehand to an older vessel when low water on the Danube became a problem. The ship change was no issue in itself but it was clear that the low water was going to cause huge disruption. We hardly moved for the first days and then had four days when we couldn't do most of things we had paid for including Vienna and Budapest. Guests were offered flights home or bus tours and hotels: the latter was not what we had paid for so we chose the former but before flights could be arranged the ship sailed on - for a bit. Each day then was chaos with constantly changing plans. Eventually we sailed all through the nights so didn't see much of the Danube and arrived in Budapest at one in the morning and left the ship at nine to fly home. Scenic should have cancelled this trip and refunded the money or offered alternatives. Their emphasis was to get the ship to a destination from where it could meet their cruising schedules. We are still in discussion about compensation but so far have been offered a surly 17% refund. I cannot recommend Scenic since although the ship was lovely and the food very good but not outstanding, and low water in itself beyond their control, the way they have handled things afterwards was very poor. This is all rather sad since Scenic could have done themselves a lot of good by immediately offering a 50% refund or a discount on another cruise. Read Less

This is actually a review of the Jasper which was subbed for this itinerary, the ships are identical. We chose Scenic based on reviews, the itinerary, their cruise guarantee (which really paid off) and the all inclusive price. Our interruption started on Day 3 in to 4 when instead sailing to Passau we stayed in Regensburg due to low water levels. We toured Salzberg on Day4 from Regensburg, a minor inconvenience with a slightly longer bus ride. That night we were informed that we would not be moving. We had the choice of staying on the boat and taking our chances, leaving the cruise for good and getting a refund or taking a bus to Melk and the Abbey the next day and staying in a hotel. We chose that option. About 20 people left for good and another 30 or so stayed on the boat. The next day was the biggest inconvenience, with a long bus ride to Melk and a night in a hotel. Fortunately that night we were informed that after a bus tour to Vienna the next day (and a wonderful concert at the Lichtenstein Palace that night) we would be meeting the ship again as they did a dam release and the ship was under way. We rejoined the boat that night to an enthusiastic "welcome back" and sailed to Bratislava the next day. When we disembarked, the ship took off to make up time and rejoined it that night by bus. The final day we sailed in to Budapest and they let us tour Budapest in the morning and come back to ship for lunch. Given the circumstances beyond their control, Scenic could not have handled things better. Our wonderful Cruise Director worked tirelessly to keep the itinerary going and the staff went out of their way to keep us in good spirits. We received a refund of several hundred dollars a day for the four days we were inconvenienced. Overall the ship and the staff were wonderful. Service was excellent. The cabin was spacious, modern and comfortable. Food was consistently good to excellent. Evenings in the lounge were a lot of fun. Our fellow passengers were great travelling companions, especially after the few complainers left the cruise after the fourth night! Tours were well organized with wonderful guides. I would highly recommend Scenic as a cruise line. They are pricey, but once on board you truly never have to touch your wallet. Read Less

We chose Scenic because it had been rated as one of the top 3 river cruise lines. We booked one of two "Panoramic Suites" (#337) and spent a small fortune to have this experience....the "river cruise" experience. For us, it was more about the ship and the trip down the Danube, our deluxe (fabulous) cabin and our butler (Christian, who by the way, was excellent). The day trips were an "extra" for us. We booked for the river cruise, not so much the day trips. Our trip of a lifetime in September was to begin on Scenic Amber, however, from day one, we never saw Amber. We were put on the sister ship "Jasper" in Nuremberg. Initially, when deciding which cruise to take, we chose Amber because it was a newer ship, so being switched to Jasper last minute was disappointing. We stayed in Nuremberg (as planned) overnight and spent the following day in Nuremberg (as planned). We left Nuremberg and headed to Regensburg through the "canal" (not on the Danube yet)...through the locks, not anything (at all) interesting to see on trip from Nuremberg to Regensburg. During the course of this trip, our cruise director "Richard" called a meeting (one of MANY) in the lounge and told us that we would have to "swap ships" as we could not go past Regensburg due to water levels. We did understand going in that a ship swap could happen and we were okay with that. Just a little interruption. Richard guaranteed us that the ship swap would happen (we would swap to the AMBER,...yay!) and that it would be seamless transition and we would continue on our cruise. Needless to say, we never left Regensburg. There were ongoing meetings/updates in the lounge (more stressful than work). We didn't know from one hour to the next what was happening, everything was confusing and stressful. Richard told us to think about this as an "adventure". Well, we didn't pay over $16,000 for an adventure. We paid for a RIVER CRUISE. At one of the last meetings, we were told "whoops" there is no ship to swap with, no Amber, we were out of luck. Our options were to bus the rest of the way (basically the ENTIRE way) to Budapest, but no guarantees of anything (ie, what hotel). We wouldn't know from day to day where we were going stay. Our luggage would have to go on and off a bus every day and into and out of a hotel everyday (we didn't sign up for this). The other option (and this option was encouraged by "Richard", was to just GO HOME! Really, go home? We had planned this trip for two years at great expense and we should just go home? Talk about stressful and disappointing! People were angry, some were crying, it was an awful experience. We feel less stress in our workplace than we did on this cruise. Guess what? Amber WAS on the other end and available for a ship swap BUT they allowed another ship (behind us) to swap onto Amber...we were out of luck, no ship. So....a letter was left in each cabin stating what the "offer" would be to either move along on the bus or make the decision to go home. The refund offer was an insult, but we really had no choice. We were NOT going to live off a bus for 5 days, hauling two big bags around Europe..no way. What happens to "all inclusive" that we paid for? We would be on our own for drinks (that we paid for). We were told that we would be reimbursed for meals (how did we really know?). No butler, no river views, nothing that we paid for. We were also told by "Richard" that our expenses to leave the ship would be covered...just give "customer service" a call and it would be handled. Scenic arranged our flight home, however we could not get upgraded premium seating (that we had already paid for....$800). They called a cab that took us to Munich and we had to pay cash $240/euros and again, we were assured that Scenic would reimburse us. After arriving home, still somewhat in a state of shock and 6 days early (still can't believe it), we received an email from Scenic (as promised) with their "appropriate refund" for our disappointing trip. What an insult! The appropriate refund was $2400 AND we're still out $800 for our upgrade and $240 for the cab fare! Our letter that was left in our cabin guaranteed us approximately $5000 (we were actually going to dispute the $5000 given we did NOT have a $10,000 trip!). We never got on the Danube! We never saw anything (for the most part). Unbelievable! Here's where we stand today....there is NO phone number to contact customer service, it's all handled by email. After receiving their very cavalier and insulting offer, we responded with an email and were again "guaranteed" that someone would check into our concerns and get back with us in TWO business days. Well, it's been 5 business days and guess what? NOTHING! No response from their "CARE team". We are MORE than upset and we are out (at this point) over $17,000!!! Are you kidding me! What a joke! I do NOT recommend Scenic and we WILL blow up social media IF this is not resolved. It is still our "hope" that we can come to a mutual agreement regarding an "appropriate refund", but time is ticking. We are still stressed about this and we've been home 2 weeks. Stressed because we now have to deal with an unresponsive Scenic customer care team. We read that Scenic is trying hard to "impress their US market" with their cruise line....attract more US travelers. Well, this isn't going to help Scenic enter the US market (by the way, most on the ship were Canadians....very few from US, so this could be a huge market for Scenic), but with the lack of customer service and the cavalier attitude of most everyone associated with Scenic, we would (at this point) NEVER RECOMMEND SCENIC. Our recommendation...... if you're sailing Scenic in the next few weeks, don't believe what they say. Do your research and cancel in advance, if you can. We would have, had we known and wouldn't be out $17,000 today. SIDE NOTE: Our panoramic suite (#337) was beautiful and our butler "Christian" (head butler) was awesome. Had we been able to sail on and have our cruise of a lifetime, this would have been a great trip, especially with the friends we met (in the very short 3 days). What a disappointment...again. All we can say...devastated. SHOULD Scenic come back with a FAIR refund offer, we will post again on this website to let you know how this was handled in the end. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had sailed on Scenic before and had a memorable experience. This particular cruise was a adventure. We were warned prior to the cruise that there was low water levels on the Danube and we might have to do a transfer which was fine. On September 22 we were given notice that the ship would not procede past Regensburg and there was a option for passengers to return home and a number did leave. We elected to stay. That night we received an undated and unsigned letter stating we were eligible for some refunds because of an itinerary change. The refunds came into effect on September 23 we were told, nothing in writing. On The night of September 23 we were given two options, go home or go on buses and stay in hotels and end up in Budapest but they only had hotels for Monday night and no further guarantees because of Oktoberfest. We elected to go home at that point and most other passengers left on the buses. Monday at around 11 am they announced they were moving the ship and we were basically given the option to stay on board or get off. We had no return flight so stayed on board and cancelled our request to home. As it was the river rose on Monday and Monday night so we starting sailing through the low water area early Tuesday morning. The passengers who were busing came back on late Tuesday night. Some had a great time and some not we were told. Our experience on board was great because there was only 35 of us. My wife and I enjoyed the holiday and did not miss all the bus rides and changing in hotels. My point here is that Scenic did not handle the problem well and I believe they knew from the beginning they had no ship available for us to transfer to and should have been up front. Due to Scenics uncertainty as to what they were going to do and offer, it affected decisions and we missed out on some tours. Yes we would travel scenic again but not spring and fall when water levels may be a issue. Read Less

Our first river cruise! We called Scenic on September 9th to see if re-scheduling our Danube cruise was warranted (we were aware of low water levels). We were told no; there was a possibility of a ship swap if necessary. On September 18 (we were already in Prague), we received an email from Scenic informing us we would be boarding the Jasper instead of the Amber as originally planned. Upon boarding, we were told not to unpack as it was extremely likely that we would be swapping ships in just a few days - the Amber was on the other side of the low-water impasse. We had all known this was a possibility and that there might be some disruption - it's a risk you take on a river cruise. Then we were told that the river cruise was now going to become a bus tour because there was no ship for us to swap to. THERE NEVER WAS A SHIP FOR US TO SWAP TO. Scenic lead us to believe they had an acceptable contingency plan. They did not. We should have been given the opportunity well before the embarkation date to re-schedule our cruise. It's not the 4 x 6-8 hour bus days or the loss of our 5 star amenities and on-board experiences or all the excursions that were canceled or changed that upset me the most. The atmosphere on board became toxic. Scenic had chosen, quite deliberately to deceive us and 167 passengers knew it. We paid about $1,200/day for this so-called luxury trip. Their "compensation" is $250/day/person for 4 days for passengers in our category. Customer Care (clearly an oxymoron for Scenic) has returned no phone calls, though promised, and has responded to no emails from anyone in our group or from our travel agent. We did, in fact, end up back on the Jasper after 1 hotel night and another full day of touring by bus. But by then, the trip was beyond salvation. The staff on board was wonderful through the whole experience. Given the whole fiasco of the "contingency plan" and the subsequent lack of "customer care", our group of 17 passengers (and all of their friends) is highly unlikely to ever sail with Scenic again. It is a disappointing and unfortunate business attitude for Scenic to take. Read Less

Wanted a layed-back cruise. Got to see a lot of Europe from the rivers and experienced a bit of their culture. Excellent excursions through vineyards etc . The ship entertainment and activities were wonderful, service was excellent. Could not have picked a better venue. Would do it again and recommend to any body. W e departed Budapest and 15 days later landed in Amsterdam. Sorry the cruise was over. The meals and wine were very good. The bar had anything I wanted. The pool on deck was a wonderful surprise. Weather cooperated with exception of two days. It was nice to be able to sit on our balcony have a quite drink and watch the the world go by. Anything you wanted the butler will get it for you. Breakfast in bed every day if you wish, but it was much more fun in the dining room and mix with the other passengers. You will meet some wonderful people and make some lasting friends. Read Less

We had to join this boat after spending some 8 hours transferring from the Jade to join Jasper. So we had an early start to go to Salzburg and then onto see the Sounds of Music show up in the mountains, that said we had very little time to explore Saltzburg which was a shame, it was rushed, The actual show was better than the previous show we experienced at Marksburg Castle, more refined and the food/drink was much better. The actual Austrian orchestra and singers were very good. After leaving the show we had a reasonably long coach drive to Melk where we joined the Jasper, when we arrived at the docking area the boat crew were having to man handle every suitcases along the jetty to the boat which did not do the suitcases any favours. We were met on board by the some of the crew and were offered drinks etc. Our first night in the dining room was not that great, service was even slower than on the Jade taking some 2 hours to get all courses. The actual Dining room/Lounge staff did not seem to gel together as well as the crew on the Jade. Again as on the Jade the portions coming out were not that great and one had to have all servings to feel reasonably full. Drinks at times were a problem to get either at the dining table or in the lounge area. We had been looking forward to eating at the Table La Rive, we had heard from some fellow passengers of their experience on the Jade and they spoke very well of their experience. However this was a complete opposite for us, there was only 4 other guests seated when we arrived. The butler who was dedicated to go through the serving was not as good as we had observed on the Jade. What ruined it for us was the other 2 couples who to be frank lacked the basic manners when eating with other people, one couple kept getting up and talking to some people they had met, and shouting from our table to them. The other couple were down right rude, complaining to the butler about their food and after asking the butler to change their dessert, simply got up and left without goodbye. When the butler returned we their desserts he asked where they had gone. He was not a happy bunny. So a lesson to be learnt here, we should have asked who we were going to be seated with before the night we had been booked to go to this venue. So sadly we had this ruined by other people! The cruise itself was well organised, as said previously on the Jade our tour director Andrea was excellent. Scenic did pull out all the stops to get us along the danube to Budapest which they accomplished. All the excursions a dn sites we experienced were very well mamagned. Final our disembarkation was the very best we have ever experienced again down to lot to Andrea, pity Oceania were not the same. Read Less

Despite low water, itinerary changes and one ship change to Jade on the last night, Scenic handled it all seamlessly (at least to the passengers). We had to leave Budapest one day early due to low water, which caused us to miss one excursion. We could have gone, however would have required a 5-6 hour bus ride. The tour guides, particularly for the Art Gallery tour in Vienna and the Nuremberg tour were outstanding. The guide for the medieval town in Czech Republic (Dieter) was disappointing and we left the tour for our own walk around after about 10 mins. We had an outstanding tour director (Richard) along with incredible service staff on the Jasper (special kudos to Marko and Sonja). Would definitely travel with them again. Entertainment on board and the special concert in Vienna was simply outstanding! Only counterpoints, 1) the staff on the Jade, which we had for only one night, appeared overly tired and service was a step down from the Jasper. and 2) we were unable to complete the departure survey as we were unable to access on-line, and there was no way to access after the fact? We were given a recommendation by our travel agaent to try this cruise line for the Danube River cruise. We have done a lot of ocean cruising so this was our first river cruise. I was shocked at how expensive it was. We arrived in Prague and only then did we hear that we would not be sailing from Nuremberg. We did do a 4 hour guided walking tour the first day. No meals other then breakfast were included. We were on our own for the next day and a half. We were bus to Passau 4 hour bus rise. Our room was very small. We paid for a balcony room which was not worth the money because we were only on the river for a very short few hours and at night we were sandwiched between two other boats. No view at all. The tour director apologized several times to us for not being told of the change. But what can you do Mother Nature has a mind of her own. We met some lovely people (the highlight of the trip). The booze was flowing and people started to unwind. The meals were OK nothing fabulous or exceptional. Just OK. The staff were pleasant but the ship had limited staff so the serve was very slow. Most nights it took us more then an hour to be served. At times people got up and got their own wine or beverage. The entertainment was what you can expect on a river cruise. The pianist was very talented. The excursions were good. Lots of bus travelling because of our location. Sometimes 6 hours of our day was on a bus. The guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. The places we saw were wonderful. I personally was not impressed. I would not do another river cruise. Read Less

My husband and I have wanted to do a river cruise on the Danube for some time. When our travel agent suggested Scenic we hesitated at first because it wasn't on our list of companies. We had no reason to hesitate and would now highly recommend them . All inclusive means all inclusive at Scenic. From the time we arrived at the airport in Budapest to our departure from Prague 10 days later, we had assistance at every turn. Our luggage was looked after we had welcome drinks and snacks and introductions. The ship was meticulously clean and easy to get around. Staff were always in sight and available to request assistance if and when needed. On return from our excursions on the very hot days, we were greeted by staff with cool towels and a refreshing cool drink. The choices and presentation of food at lunch and dinners was outstanding. The head chef came around to our table nightly and was genuinely concerned about our impressions and passionate about his work. The excursions were well planned to introduce us to the culture of the venue. In Vienna we enjoyed a private concert by the Imperial Symphony Orchestra with guest visits by 2 opera singers and 2 ballet dancers performing, of course, the Blue Danube Waltz. On board the technology employed by the hand held Taylor made devices made even sitting back on the sun deck interesting and possible to enjoy everything in sight as the device gave us information at every site of interest we sailed by. The whole trip was a wonderful experience! Read Less

It was selected by our travel agent as a way to relax after the World Crew Club Dragonboat Championships in Szeged HUNGARY. She done real good!! We explored PRAGUE before the sail and BUDAPEST after we docked on the final day. Both cities are must sees, and the SCENIC guides were excellent (Martina in PRAGUE and Victoria in BUDAPEST). The SCENIC experience aboard was deluxe. Our Tour Director (Nikola) never missed a beat, and the remainder of the crew treated us like royalty....smiles, quick responses etc. We had to switch from the JADE to JASPER due to some very low river levels in Central Europe. No problem; Nikola aced it. If you have already seen REGENSBURG and VIENNA, the tours to the more remote locations of CENSKY and BRATSLAVA are worth it. Several of our teammates used the e-bikes and reported good things. Those who stayed aboard thought that at least one afternoon chilling on deck paid off. Make no mistake, the luxury cruise does not come cheaply, but in the end felt that we received decent value. The piano guy can make or break an evening. On the JADE we had Mark who was definitely in tune with our craziness. On JASPER, we had to work on Enos to bring him out of the '40s, but it can be done. We enjoyed SCENIC so much that we are looking into the RHONE cruise in a couple of years. Read Less

As a 40th anniversary trip. We made our own arrangements to get to Budapest and to return home from Amsterdam. We were told by Scenic UK to phone the Jade (which should have been our ship) to find her dock on the Monday. While out walking in Budapest on Sunday we saw the Scenic Jasper to ask if they knew where Jade was docking? The lady at reception looked bemused and said Jade is not due but made a phone call to check and said she was not due....she then asked for our name, then said we were due to board her ship Jasper the following day!! The ship had changed due to low water levels but we had not been notified. We complained via our travel agent about the lack of communication and eventually had a phone call from Scenic UK, the gist being that we had sorted ourselves out so what was the problem! Not exactly 5* customer service, especially as it cost us £14k+. Similar responses after the cruise...no real apology just excuses that HQ in Australia had the information but UK did not! Also our cabin was being changed so UK were waiting for detail....as far as I could tell, we had the same grade of cabin we had booked? They probably knew a week earlier of the ship change as that was probably the location where the ship change probably took place but they do not like to publish that!! We heard the return cruise from Amsterdam was likely to have 3 ship changes! Having said all that, we were on the Jasper for 1 week from Monday 23 July then met up with the Jade on Sunday 29 July. Both ships were excellent and the Cruise Director Cathy (Kathy) and the rest of the crew were all hardworking and friendly with great service. Ship change was so slick although all the suitcases had to be repacked and they were taken from our cabin and were waiting for us on the Jade!! We just went on our tour for the day and were taken back to the Jade! Excursions were well-organised and included more than usually described. Would happily recommend the cruise and ships but not the back-up organisation in UK, etc. Will not be using them again, life is too short! Read Less
