New experience having never done a river cruise before. The Rhine was lovely and everything about the ship was wonderful. The only thing I didn't like was getting up reasonably early every morning to go on a trip. Having said that we did see a lot of lovely places. All the crew were excellent and very friendly. The on- shore trips were well organised and everything went to time. The special private concert we went to see was a new experience and most enjoyable. Would like to have seen a few more of the passengers making more of an effort to dress up a little more formal for such a special event. Our flight to Basel was only slightly delayed and because it was an afternoon departure from Bristol we only just made the ship in time before it left at 17.00hrs so maybe an earlier flight would have been better. We did not see anything of Basal. Read Less

We just returned from a one week cruise on the Scenic Opal. Overall, we had a wonderful time, with a few disappointments. We were told that they would only pick us up at the Zurich Airport, so we stayed there overnight and arrived at the designated meeting spot at 11:45 as directed only to be told that we would not depart for Basel until 2:00. When we arrived at the ship, the welcome lunch was long over. I suppose we could have ordered room service, but we were not fully aware of what was offered, and no attempts were made to serve us lunch. To be truly honest, there is always some type of light food available in the bar area, and often the pastries there are far superior to those offered in the dining room. Our room was small, as expected, but very nicely laid out. The bathroom was modern, and everything worked effortlessly. My only complaint was that that there were two sliding doors, one for each closet, but one had to be fully closed before opening the other one. This caused all kinds of confusion as my husband and I tried to get dressed at the same time in the small room. Other than that, the room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. Scenic’s unique sliding glass balcony worked very well and gave us an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside. Our cabin stewardess was wonderful. We rarely saw her, but our room was always made up quickly twice a day. We saw our “butler” the very first day, but then only saw him tending the bar, working in Portobello, etc, leaving him little time to do anything for us. Some people seemed to have been able to order room service for breakfast, but there were no forms left in our room. The food was one of the lower points of the cruise. Breakfast and lunch were very good, but dinner often left something to be desired. Waiters rarely encouraged you to order breakfast or lunch from the elaborate menu placed on each table. Our “special” dinner at Portobello, was just terrible, watery minestrone, oddly flavored mushroom soup with foam, horrible “osso buco” and polenta, marginal tiramisu. It is very easy to cook excellent Italian food, but if you can’t, please leave it off the menu. The cannelloni was also terrible, and was offered more than once as a vegetarian alternative on the main dinner menu. I also felt that the pastry selections, of which there was usually only one at dinner, could have been a little more imaginative. A horrid rhubarb tart was offered as the only dessert on the final night. The other three choices were usually some sort of ice cream, a cheese plate or a fruit plate, that usually included too much apple and unripe melon and few berries of any sort. I was extremely disappointed with the dinner selection and quality on the Scenic Opal, although all of the staff were friendly and accommodating. Tours were well organized with excellent local guides, but I wish they didn’t all start at or before 9:00AM or earlier, causing a rush to eat breakfast and leave the ship. There was nothing offered in the afternoon, even though we often remained in port. I have to agree with a previous reviewer who said that the seats on the sundeck were so uncomfortable, it was almost impossible to spend much time up there. Kurt, the activities coordinator was wonderful, very accessible and organized everything beautifully, right down to our departures, which were well planned to the minute. We even had someone meet us at the airport to help with checking in. All in all, we had a very nice time. I just wish that there were afternoon tours offered and that the food in the dining room at dinner would have been better. Read Less

Loved my trip on the Rhine highlights tour... from beginning to end...we had such a good time and were sad to leave at the end of the week on board the Opal. The staff were superb, food and drinks plentiful, itinerary good, only critisim would be the early starts for the trips. The trips were informative and well conducted. The staff were fantastic and had an excellent rapore with their guests. The cruise director a great tonic and a real character with his matching shoes and ties. The captain of the ship was approachable and encouraged people to visit him on deck. The deck was pretty and the hot tub fabulous. The electric bikes and hand held devices were both an additional bonus to the trip. I would have no hesitation in recommending this cruise to any fellow travellers. One of the best experiences ever. Well done Scenic and their wonderful staff. Read Less

A friend we were traveling with found Scenic and we just took his recommendation. The ship was excellent and the crew were superb. The only disappointment was our butler, who did very little and for the the odd time that we asked for something he still didn't come through. Otherwise, the entire experience was excellent. The shore excursions were very well organized and we were very pleased that all the gratuities were included. The motor-assisted bicycles were also a great amenity. We used two of them on one occasion and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were also very easy to learn to use. The meals were outstanding and the chef took great pride in his craft. The selection of wines was mediocre but sufficient. The bar selection was likewise very good and the bar staff carried the torch for service excellence. Overall, we had good value for our money and will likely cruise with Scenic again. Read Less

We experienced our first river cruise two years ago on a 7 day Scenic River Cruise 0n the Danube. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to go on another 7 day excursion Scenic river cruise on the Rhine, and this time with a few family members. The service and the attention to details was exceptional. Everything was included in the price of the cruise. Food was exquisite and all you could eat. Ports and shore excursions were planned to the T with no issues. There was local entertainment every evening in the bar area which was enjoyable. Also included was an evening out to a concert just for the cruise members in Strasbourg, France. The ship was easy to get around and the sun deck was great for gathering and enjoying the scenery when cruising. There is an elevator for access to all decks except for the sun deck. Plan to do another Scenic river cruise in the future. Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We spent 2 days in Amsterdam, which we thoroughly enjoyed, before connecting with the river cruise. Our cabin was excellent (junior balcony) and was spacious for a cabin, especially the bathroom. The lounge and dining room were beautiful, and because the weather was so nice, we spent quite a bit of time on deck. Our crew could not have better and the food and entertainment were wonderful. If I am permitted, I would especially like to thank three staff who stood out: Costi, who looked after the dining room, Margaret who served our drinks, and of course Kurt, the cruise director. We especially enjoyed the excursions. Our only regret was that we wish we could have had more free time to explore the places on our own after the guided tour, but we realize that schedules could not allow this. The cruise exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely do it again. While this was our first river cruise, so I have nothing to compare, we felt we were totally looked after from the time we left our home to when we returned. I also very much appreciate that this cruise was totally all inclusive. Read Less

We had lots to celebrate this year and decided to do our "bucket-list" trip . . . a European river cruise. Scenic was recommended to us by our travel agent. We went into the trip with high expectations, and I can honestly say that all our expectations were exceeded! The ship was beautiful. Being only two years old, it was shiny new and pretty. The staff in every area were all top-notch (cruise director Kurt was exceptional); the food and beverages were excellent; every excursion was fantastic! We enjoyed every single minute of the cruise. It was well-organized, relaxed, and a lot of fun. Scenic paid attention to every detail and we felt really well looked-after. The transfers were smooth and seamless. Embarkation and Disembarkation were organized and pleasant. The guides on all of our excursions were very knowledgeable and very passionate about their city. The pace of the excursions was perfect. Entertainment was varied and very enjoyable.Fellow travellers were all very friendly. One of the highlights for us was cruising down the Rhine gorge on a beautiful sunny, warm afternoon and seeing mile after mile of castles, vineyards, and churches. We felt like we were in a storybook! Read Less

We were interested in learning about Holland, Germany and Switzerland and discovering what a river cruise was like -- the best and most relaxing of all the cruises we have taken! Our meals were fantastic, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoyed having dinner entertainment. Margaret and Gigi looked after us with our favourite alcoholic drinks during our meals and on the sundeck as well as the lounge. Costin, the head of food service, always made sure that our meals were what we expected and were always available. Kurt, the cruise director, was fantastic and did a super job of making sure everything was going smoothly and made Harley laugh like crazy during the "German class" and as a result, Harley has signed up for conversational German to start Sept. 18! The tour guides for the canals of Amsterdam and the bus tour were exceptional. The tour guide in Koblenz was knowledgeable and showed us the best of the city with his love of the city and his flair for writing, he made the city come alive. The Mechanical Music Instrument Museum was fascinating and the ride up the side of the mountain on the cable car gave us an overall view of the vineyards as we reached the Niederwald monument at the top. We have no words to describe the experience at the Baroque Palace, complete with drinks and hors d'oeuvres before the classical concert - we were overwhelmed with the beauty of the room and the wonderful performances of the two opera singers and the piano accompaniment. The visit to the Black Forest area was somewhat of a disappointment but Schnapps and the Black Forest Cake made up for it! We found going through the locks fascinating and we were very impressed when our cruise got delayed by a mishap in a lock but we admired the way Kurt managed to rebook everyone at the right times on each bus so that we could catch our flight out of Basel airport. This was our first cruise with Scenic. Their arrangements before, during and after the cruise were excellent. Everything which was under their immediate control worked superbly - Scenic cannot be blamed for the fact that there issues with the locks on the Strasburg to Basle section. The Scenic Opal is a beautifull well appointed ship, the food is very good and the service even better.Cabins are reasonably spacious and certainly way better than just adequate. The organised trips were extremely well guided with knowledgeable local guides who were well versed in their subjects and, because they were obviously experienced, made their guides both informative and entertaining. Talking of entertaining, the varied programme of evening entertainment in the ship's lounge was really good. In fairness, it is not a cruise which is suitable for children - it is definitely tailored for adults but even those who were more advanced in years than others coped with the tours very well. Not a cheap cruise but, as Scenic advertise, EVERYTHING is included - no surcharges for anything! Would have no hesitation in going with Scenic again. Read Less

Had a great time with them. Definitely would use Scenic again. It was a experience of a lifetime. The scenery was amazing. Tours where great. Having everything set up for you with a daily schedule was great. Having an all inclusive cruise is the best way to go. Get you eat and drink as much as you want with everything included. Only had to have money to do shopping while on shore. All tour guides were great and very knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend going on a Scenic cruise. You will not regret it. Rooms super clean and luxurious, service, food, entertainment fabulous. In room bar. We had a balcony. No reserved dining times which we liked as we could go when we wanted to. Staff very friendly and attentive. Cruise went from Amsterdam to Basel. Good choice with tours. Can hardly wait to go again. I believe you have to be at least 18 but average age was 70-75. Our group was around 60 yrs. Dancing in lounge every night. We were in Europe about 2 extra weeks and toured Paris, Belgium and Switzerland. Easy to meet other people. Weather was somewhat cool so we didn't utilize the sun deck as much as we would have liked. But did use the hot tub/infinity pool. This cruise exceeded my expectations. I had no complaints at all. We wanted this cruise to visit a part of Europe not yet seen. Scenic offered such an all inclusive cruise choice we felt it was the one to try. The itinerary to was great.,we saw so many beautiful castles and half timber towns it was amazing. Our cabin was well appointed and we love our sunroom balcony which was lovely to sit on,warm and cozy as we floated along. The rest of the cabin was well planned and had lots of storage for both of us. Food was excellent. So varied and well prepared. Especially considering the petit galley they were working from. Wine selection as well offered all of our friends their particular favourites. The staff on the ship was well trained and attentive. Things asked for would appear in short order always with a smile . We had lots of fun with several staff who had fun senses of humour and we looked forward to seeing during our days. Shore excursions were also nclud d and offered many choice see as we moved along. My husband and fri nds especiaal enjoy d their bike ride on the electric bikes. Entertaining intervals were a glimps of the local talent Germany has in abundance. We enjoyed several evenings as well as a couple of afternoons in the lovely lounge. I hope I haven't missed anything. I did save the best for last. Our cruise director Richard Grey was without a doubt the most outstanding part of our trip. He was not only the most organized fellow ,but the most entertaining. During our investigations, Scenic looked like a more flexible and yet "all-in" package. We spent absolutely nothing more than the fees paid up front, and at ports of call we were free to participate in their great guided tours or venture out on our own with their terrific little gps doodads. Even e-bikes to lessen the effort, were provided. The cruise director, Richard, was fantastic. Always available and quick to look after whatever our question was. The service staff were exemplary, doting over every need. And the food was as good as any high-end restaurant...from the breakfast buffet thru to the sit down served dinners. The daily/nightly entertainment was enjoyable and the dance floor was never empty. The special event, the classical concert in the Rastatt Palace was the best event of this kind I have ever attended. The intimate venue meant we were almost participating in the concert. We're already planning our next cruise...perhaps the Seine. Read Less

After a very positive experience on the Seine with Scenic, this cruise was an easy choice. Traveling with a small group, we were able to enjoy the company of our friends, and of many other new friends. I would identify the passengers on the Opal as fairly young group, and the staff embraced, and encouraged, our wish to have fun on the ship, as well as off. As previously experienced, our excursions with Scenic were interesting, and well guided. The outings were perhaps a bit short, part day tours, due to a need for the Opal to cover the distance to the next stop. This is not a criticism of the cruise, but a characteristic of this cruise. The crew were vey capable of ensuring the time spent on the Opal passed quickly. The food and the ship were excellent, as we now expect with Scenic. Our balcony was perhaps underutilized, but that relates to the fall weather, and meeting our group in the lounge, or dining room, instead of watching the sights as a couple from our balcony. Enough cannot be said about the staff on the ship. I believe every Scenic ship is well designed and appointed, but the effort and care of the Opal staff ensured this cruise has established a very high standard for our Scenic cruises that are likely to follow. A few days were well spent in Amsterdam before the cruise, to adjust to the time change and enjoy Dutch culture. Touring in and around around Zurich after the cruise is expensive, but wound out the trip nicely. Read Less

We (my husband, 72 and I, 67) had cruised with Scenic before, two years ago and we have been on numerous ocean cruises. Scenic (which attracts mostly Brits and Australians with some Canadians and Americans) makes the trip so easy and enjoyable. Embarkation went like a dream - we were met at the Basel airport, transferred to the ship, fed lunch and relaxed in the lounge until the cabins were ready at 3pm. The ships are amazingly spacious, the food is incredible and the crew is never without a smile - always accommodating and pleasant. Ports and shore excursions are well chosen and the local guides are knowledgeable and fun. Perhaps best of all, a cruise on Scenic is truly ALL inclusive. Tips are included (even for the local guides and bus drivers), drinks (top shelf spirits and wines) are included and always very generous - even one load of free laundry is included on a two week cruise. They even include bottled water with every excursion and a map of the destination as well. The dining room is lovely with great views. We enjoyed the food very much and we are "foodies". Breakfast and lunch were buffet with a wonderful selection and you could always order off the menu as well. Food was always hot and delicious with many local specialties. You can have a mimosa with breakfast and wine/beer is served with lunch. Dinner was to order and generally offered four courses with vegetarian and healthy choices as well. Over the course of the two weeks we had beef, duck, chicken, many types of fish, pork and lamb. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious. There is also a cafe on the lounge deck which offers early/late breakfast and light lunch, along with fruit and pastries during the day. Always available in the lounge are various coffee drinks and many types of tea. Being a river cruise, the entertainment is not as abundant or flashy as that on an ocean cruise, but we had performances several nights by local artists. The sun deck up top is a great place to sit and watch the world go by, take a dip in the pool/hot tub or walk the small walking track. There is also a fitness center (a state of the art treadmill, elliptical and bike as well as free weights) and a salon where hair services and massages/treatments are available. The service is impeccable - the staff is so well trained and seem to really care if you are having a good time. Our cruise director, Patrik, was as good as I have ever experienced. He was knowledgeable, informative, patient and funny. His port talks each day explained exactly what to expect on each excursion. The wait staff, bar staff, cabin staff and everyone were just so pleasant and helpful. Our butler, Daniel, came by several times to ask if he could do anything for us. The ports were well chosen and the excursions really provided something for everyone. They ran like clockwork. If you don't want to join an excursion you can always take your "Tailormade" from your cabin (a type of GPS unit pre-loaded with story/history of the port) and do one of the tours on that. they also have electric assisted bikes for use (we did not try those). Scenic also provides a Scenic Enrich experience and a Scenic Sundown experience on each cruise. For our Scenic Enrich we had a tour of a castle and then a classical concert, complete with wine. Our Scenic Sundown was taking a cable car up to another castle and listening to local music while overlooking the city below. Disembarkation went equally as smoothly as embarkation. When it was time to leave for the Amsterdam airport we had a full size bus for 10 of us, and the Scenic rep at the airport even came in with us to help with printing our boarding passes. I would recommend Scenic to anyone! Read Less

We have been with Scenic before, and enjoyed this even more than previously. The ship is well designed, and there seems more space in the cabins than before. Meals are generally good, although at times there were dishes that cooked to my taste (vegetables rather too al dente and roast potatoes never crisp, although the main irritation was the time taken to serve the first course in the evening. Neither were we sure why the dress code is jacket or tie for men but virtually nobody adheres to it. Not therefore the smartest of cruises, and not really therefore matching up to the smartness of the ship and staff. The self-guided tours with handheld are a brilliant idea, but they need a lot more work to become easily usable. There are no clear directions to the various marked sites, which have no numbers to conform with the numbered list of sites the tour is meant to cover. Read Less

Scenic advertises "all inclusive"! They do deliver, not only do they deliver but they exceed your expectations over and over and over again. Each day passed and we thought that the next day could not be any better but we were misled. Each day had more surprises, more activities that were not expected or anticipated! The food was unbelievable. This is coming from someone who is of Italian heritage and known to be a connosseur of good food. The night time entertainment was different each and every night. Usually entertainment from the country we were visiting. Very nice touch! The best night was the Symphony Orchestra of Vienna where we got a "private for Scenic guests only" performance. And it was held inside one of the Castle's in Vienna! Breathtaking experience. Absolutely loved it. The cruise director was awesome! He kept the group very entertained and ensured every single detail of the cruise was detailed for us and was followed through on. Very talented individual! The crew, cleaning, butler service, bar staff, etc. were all very much focused on client experience. There was much attention paid to detail and staff remembered favourites of the passengers - very impressive! Cleaning crew were meticulous - i cant count how many times my bath towels were changed! Excursions were very very detailed and just the right length of time! Great tour directors as well. Very knowledgeable and very willing to share any information we were looking for! Balcony added comfortable space. Beds were deluxe clouds .Extremely well executed program of events. Dining was 5-star. Dining service best I've experenced- far above QE2. Kudos to Zoran and Branislan who provided me a very memorable dining experience. Cabin 324 well-appointed. Thanks to my son for this Mother's Day present I shall forever remember. Also, luckily, the weather was perfect. Tulips were gorgeous. Alex executed excursions etc with great aplomb. The stars were in alignment. I don't know how anything could have worked out better. Also, we think the Basel-Amsterdam is the more desirable. Scenic provided limo service both ways. I would hope to have the opportunity to travel with them again. By all means everyone should explore Europe. But the means of transport is a large factor in the day to day life of your journey. I investigated river cruising for a very long time before booking, and found that it was not what I expected, largely due to what information was not supplied prior to embarkation. For example, travelling down the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers nowhere was I told that there was a total of 68 locks, and part of the journey was on man made canals, not the river. It seemed every night at dinner the ship passed through 2 locks, and the view out the window was cement walls. Also, the room was so small that twice I hit my head on the sink, when lowering myself to the toilet. The bed also was a struggle as it was 2 mattresses set on the base, which kept spreading apart, with me finding myself in the crack between the two. The itinerary gave the choices at each port each day, but failed to say that actual time in the port could be as short as 2 to 3 hours. Not really enough time in a port. And lastly, I really did not get a sense of the close quarters in the Crystal dining room or the lounge. There is zero private space when dining, and the table for guests at the next table we’re about 8 inches away from your table, so everyone heard everyone else’s conversations. The lounge was the same, with zero space. I do not know how many times I banged my shins on the little tables, trying to get to, or from my seat. Also, the noise level with so many people in such a confined space was deafening. And finally, I was disappointed with the bar. I am not a big drinker, and my favourite drinks are fruity blender drinks like daiquiris, pina colada etc. I saw a blender in pictures prior to the cruise, so I thought it would be fine, because search as I did, I could not find a bar drink list online before we booked the cruise. Well, there was a blender at the bar, but it was only used 2 times I knew of in our 2 week cruise. Pine Coladas were shaken, not blended. Daiquiris were not available. So I tried to think of every kind of drink I could possibly order, that they might be able to make. I ordered a Harvey Wallbanger, and they googled it, and made one, although not a good one. I asked them to make a drink in the blender, that they usually use the blender to make. They did not understand the request, or maybe there is no drink that is made in the blender. They serve wine, champagne, and any spirit mixed with something else, but as it turned out the blender was purely ornamental. So for 2 weeks there was not a drink I had, that I liked. Also, the entertainment in the lounge was background noise to the talking noise. So, while I enjoyed Europe, and will go back to Europe, I will never again go on a river cruise.n Read Less

This was our first river cruise and a great experience. Richard the cruise director was amazing, he was living and very knowledgeable. Looked forward everyday for this review for the next day of what to expect on the excursions. The staff that service you is top notch!! They are all very friendly and profession. I really enjoyed that on disco night, the staff is able to join in and be part of the celebration. The ship crew is a real family and so accomodating to everyone's needs. And trust me we had some high maintenance people on the cruise and they were always so pleasant to really demanding and critical people. These people deal with all sorts of people and handle it with such professionalism. For the most part our meals were excellent but the exclusive Table Le Rive was a little disappointing. That is not the equivalent of very fine dining exclusive tasting if you're use to paying $200 for that experience it's not in that category. Go to dinner on time, it takes awhile to serve 160+ people. The wine pairings for dinner were always excellent choices. The bartenders are great at making you anything and suggesting different drinks. The excursions were great an the exclusive opera concert is a real treat!! We would definitely do another Scenic cruise again. It was great to have everything included and no hassles for drinks and excursions. We loved the staff cannot say enough about the crew, just exceptional service! Read Less

This was our second cruise with SCENIC. After having had such a wonderful time travelling from Budapest to Nuremberg last year, we decided to trust Scenic once again and try the Amsterdam to Basel tour. Once again, we were not disappointed. Richard, our cruise director was accommodating, efficient, entertaining and had us well organized, informed and looked after. The staff on board are really good at what they do. We felt welcomed, pampered and genuinely appreciated. Food was excellent and plentiful ( as was the wine and other refreshments. ) Our excursions were well organized, very professionally guided and, thank goodness, did not require long rides on buses. Scenic certainly knows how to keep you busy and interested. I have come home for a rest and a serious diet. Embarkation was fast and efficient. I happened to be suffering from a nagging dose of bronchitis plus being up for about 30 hours. While we arrived at a time that would normally require a few hour wait for our cabin, our manager and head of house keeping graciously made our room available early. This was very obliging and very much appreciated. Disembarkation had a bit of a twist in that we did not get to our designated final destination. A problem with a lock on the river, not a scenic problem, required we disembark short of Basel. Richard handled it well and our airport transfers were completed without any issue at all. Our personal highlight was our visit to Strasbourg but, I cannot fault one single outing. Our enrichment evening was wonderful. River cruising may not be inexpensive and, agreed it may not be for everyone but, if you do choose a river cruise, you cannot and will not get any better itinerary or treatment than what you receive from Scenic. The fact that everything is included, no tipping, top shelf products on the bar, and all excursions included goes a long way to easing the mind and alleviating the all to often nickle and dime annoyances you experience on other lines. And, you may even get to meet Richard's Disco loving cousin while on board but that, my friends, is another story. Read Less

We were supposed to board at Basel but due to a lock problem we started at what was the second port Breisach not a problem. We had been with Scenic before so knew what to expect and it was all as we thought it would be. Due to any early flight we arrived about 1pm and were told to wait in the lounge as boarding was officially 3pm. After a quick drink we were asked by Marketa the hotel manager so register at reception and we could go straight to our cabin registration took about 30 seconds! Excellent cabin plenty of storage space and the balcony system gives you a nice open atmosphere. Later had the orientation by Richard the cruise director and realized we had met him before on his previous sea cruise director roles. He was excellent throughout the journey very knowledgeable very helpful and very funny (even if we had heard some of his stories on one of the sea cruises!) Dining was what we expected and gave the opportunity to sit with different people each night we met lots of interesting folk from all parts of the world. Excursions were varied and enjoyable with very knowledgeable guides The staff helped to make the trip even better with their friendly and helpful attitudes too many to mention individually but special thanks to our butler Marius who couldn't do more for us (even bringing a cognac nightcap to the cabin Thanks) Would we go again with Scenic Definitely!! Thank you to every one who made it such a great cruise p.s. The glorious weather as promised by Richard helped Read Less
