Scenic booking agents were attentive. We arrived in Amsterdam two days prior to boarding the Scenic Opal. We would recommend doing this as Amsterdam is a beautiful city with much to offer. We chose Scenic because it was all inclusive. The vessel was clean. The staff were very attentive. The food good. The free choice shore excursions, almost three a day to choose from, were well planned and organized. Tour groups were broken down into groups of no more than 20 people. The Scenic travel app on our cell phones were tethered to our guides speaker system, so we could hear what they had to say without straining. If we could change anything about the tours, perhaps a little more free time in each town would have been nice. On board the vessel, as it cruised down the Rhine, we could also use the Scenic app to inform us what towns, villages and castles we were passing. I recommend Scenic. Read Less

The most relaxing active vacation ever! Sounds strange but it’s true; active because there is often something going on or somewhere to be, relaxing because Scenic takes care of all the logistics. It truly was all inclusive; no tipping, even on the airport transfers from/to home. Scenic bills itself as 5 star all-inclusive so we were disappointed to read in the information booklet that “if we received exceptional service” we were free to add a gratuity. Sorry, for what we paid, exceptional service was expected! 68 locks, 803 bridges so it’s definitely a worry about low/high water levels. We were very fortunate as a few days after we passed Passau ship swaps happened. Cabin 206 was perfectly situated, bed was very comfortable, roomy shower with rain head and hand held shower wands. Ample storage; everything was soft close (cupboards, drawers, cabinets, toilet seat). Very impressed with the number of outlets. Great lighting and mirrors make the cabin seem very spacious. We had a couple of minor things that needed attention and, within a half hour, the issues were resolved. Excellent service. The individual blankets had not been washed prior to our arrival so we made sure not to put them back in their zippered pouch so that our cabin steward was aware they had been used and needed cleaning. Our cabin steward was excellent – the best we’ve ever had. They make a big deal about your “butler” but, other than introducing herself the first day, we had no interaction with her at all. That being said, we didn’t have any need for the included services or they were provided by other individuals. Toiletries were great. Hair dryer, Nordic walking sticks, large umbrella, ear plugs, even a long handled shoe horn were provided. Undecided if the sun lounge was worth the additional cost; rafting and/or facing public areas often left us unable to enjoy it but it does make for a larger cabin. Breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent; lots of variety and the breads at lunch were awesome. The pastry chef was outstanding; apple turnovers, croissants and other breakfast pastries were light and flaky. I absolutely loved the butter machine which provided a fresh portion of butter at the touch of a button; definitely a hit with all guests. There are fresh made options available for both breakfast and lunch. Smoothies were tasteless as was the “flavoured” water served at the Late Riser Breakfast in the River Café. We had lunch served in River Café when we opted out of the excursion to Salzburg and, while the selection was fine, the food was lukewarm. The same situation with the Sun Deck BBQ. The warming trays just don’t do the job. They do not serve “fresh” milk and we normally drink milk at lunch and dinner. Opted not to visit Portobellos as we didn't like the menu (beef cheeks!) and we don't drink alcohol so the wine pairing wasn't of interest. Very small portions for dinner. Even by Canada Food Guide recommendations Scenic portions fall far below the minimum requirements. Vegetables and starch are almost non existent! My husband has a small appetite and TWICE he woke up hungry during the night; NEVER happened before in his 72 years! There are limited selections; two cold appetizer options, two hot appetizer options, one soup, one meat, one fish and one vegetarian. Fortunately they have “always available” options. Soups were “made with love” but would definitely benefit from being made with cream. They were watery despite being called “cream of”. My husband said the soup spoons were more like shovels and would come in handy digging in the garden. Meal descriptions left much to be desired and were often not an accurate depiction of what the meal really was. We only ordered room service once and the meal was delivered promptly and the food was piping hot. I have menus and pictures of the meals at: https://www.flickr.com/gp/22259946@N08/Fi6264 With the exception of one employee who twice refused to take an order for coffee in two different venues on two different days to two different people (he just pointed and said “self-serve”) everyone was friendly, efficient and eager to please. There was wonderful interaction between staff members and a very warm environment. Some great moves were witnessed on disco night! Our cruise director Richard (distant relation of Richard the Lionheart) was entertaining, knowledgeable and energetic. Miljenko, Restaurant Manager, was charming and always willing to assist with food concerns. Mario Alberto, Hotel Manager, was an absolute delight and ran the operations with a warm smile and a firm commitment to guest satisfaction. The reception staff were wonderful; always a ready smile and can do attitude. There were 148 guests; Australia, New Zealand, Canada, U.K., a few Americans and one couple from Curacao. It was a great group with everyone having an enjoyable time without any drunken behaviour in spite of the included alcohol. Unfortunately a few guests didn’t make use of the hand sanitizer, complimentary water, shampoo and shower gel and preferred “au naturale” to using deodorant. Opal Lounge had ample, comfortable seating but the very low black tables were a hazard at night as both a tripping issue and trying to find the surface to place your glass. I loved the glass straws! Being non-alcohol drinkers we would have appreciated frozen mocktails. Hot chocolate, teas and coffee available 24/7 in the Opal Lounge was excellent. We were pleased with the offered entertainment. We enjoyed listening to David; a talented musician. The excursions were well organized and stress free. We especially enjoyed the Palais Liechtenstein concert and we have NO interest in classical music. It was definitely an experience not to be missed as was the visit and feast at Marksburg Castle. The banquet is for everyone, the Castle Tour is definitely NOT for anyone with mobility issues or a fear of falling. We really enjoyed the high lock experience, it was so well done with dramatic music added! The highlight for us was sitting on the Sun Deck soaking in the passing scenery between Koblenz and Rudesheim. Life just doesn’t get any better than this. The Scenic Taylormade app was hit and miss on excursions but the City Guides and River View options were excellent. We would rate our experience a 10 but, value for money, 7-8. We’re glad we ticked this experience off our bucket list but with the high cost and the anxiety over water levels it’s not something we’ll do again. Read Less

Embarkation went smoothly although we didn't embark from Basel but from Bruisach, and we had to wait at the airport a while because an abandoned piece of luggage caused the airport lock down. The ship was spacious and airy, and the cabin comfortable with the balcony in use all the time, which made it seem even more spacious. Dining was good. We always used the main dining area, and enjoyed the alternate menu option on a couple of occasions. The Table La Rive was exceptional and the Portabello restaurant was also good. We thought the chefs were exemplorary, working in such a small space, and we had never tasted lamb chops like it ever! We enjoyed the musical interludes both on board and the special event in the baroque palace. Then we made friends in the bar afterwards, dancing the night away. Service was exceptional, the staff were all friendly, professional, and attentive. All areas of the ship were exceptionally clean. Also the turn down service when the cabin had its second cleaning of the day was excellent. We enjoyed the shore excursions, we usually chose the guided walking options to get to know the town we were staying in, and the Mercedes Benz tour was mind blowing! We did think the tours were a little short, and there could have been an afternoon option, but also enjoyed the time to relax on the balcony. Read Less

They were all courteous, friendly, attentive and just plain NICE people. Always served us with patience and a smile. They were the best part of our trip. The crew was also terrific in the smoothness of our journey. I would suggest snacks for the tables in the bar area as I went and bought my own chips and peanuts. Needless to say 2 days later snacks were served with our beverages. Pringles just didn't do it for us. MISS VICKIS CHIPS would be a great idea. Most of the tours were informative. The least favorite was Cologne. The tour guide spoke to long and really nothing to see except the church. Food was delicious. The cooks etc work very hard. The back drop of what the whole ship does is incredible. From Captain and crew to sous chef is amazing. GTEAT JOB Read Less

My friend suggested this cruise and it sounded wonderful. Overall it was! The dining staff really made the cruise worthwhile. They were friendly, extremely professional and hardworking. They really took the time to make sure you felt looked after. The Chef was excellent and important because I have a food allergy. The food was plentiful and there was a great variety. I felt the off ship tours were interesting but sometimes the bus trips to and from the ship seemed long. Our cruise Director was enthusiastic and informative but the many introductions of staff and crew went on too long. One introduction on the first day would have been enough. My favourite part was being on the ship and cruising on the river. It wasn’t always picturesque, especially through the industrial areas, but I still enjoyed the breeze and the sunshine on the top deck. On the second day, I put two blouses out for ironing only. Apparently, for the first time ever, laundry went missing. I had to ask several times, but I do believe they were doing their best to locate my tops. They were finally returned to me late on day 7 of an 8 day cruise. Laundry service was included but obviously we were hesitant to try it again. The much anticipated in room mini bar was a disappointment because it offered mostly alcohol. Very limited snack selection. Pringles and biscuits, and not every day. At this point, I’m not sure that I would travel with Scenic again, but I would definitely enjoy another river cruise. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and a great experience. Richard the cruise director was amazing, he was living and very knowledgeable. Looked forward everyday for this review for the next day of what to expect on the excursions. The staff that service you is top notch!! They are all very friendly and profession. I really enjoyed that on disco night, the staff is able to join in and be part of the celebration. The ship crew is a real family and so accomodating to everyone's needs. And trust me we had some high maintenance people on the cruise and they were always so pleasant to really demanding and critical people. These people deal with all sorts of people and handle it with such professionalism. For the most part our meals were excellent but the exclusive Table Le Rive was a little disappointing. That is not the equivalent of very fine dining exclusive tasting if you're use to paying $200 for that experience it's not in that category. Go to dinner on time, it takes awhile to serve 160+ people. The wine pairings for dinner were always excellent choices. The bartenders are great at making you anything and suggesting different drinks. The excursions were great an the exclusive opera concert is a real treat!! We would definitely do another Scenic cruise again. It was great to have everything included and no hassles for drinks and excursions. We loved the staff cannot say enough about the crew, just exceptional service! Read Less

We have been with Scenic before, and enjoyed this even more than previously. The ship is well designed, and there seems more space in the cabins than before. Meals are generally good, although at times there were dishes that cooked to my taste (vegetables rather too al dente and roast potatoes never crisp, although the main irritation was the time taken to serve the first course in the evening. Neither were we sure why the dress code is jacket or tie for men but virtually nobody adheres to it. Not therefore the smartest of cruises, and not really therefore matching up to the smartness of the ship and staff. The self-guided tours with handheld are a brilliant idea, but they need a lot more work to become easily usable. There are no clear directions to the various marked sites, which have no numbers to conform with the numbered list of sites the tour is meant to cover. Read Less

A friend we were traveling with found Scenic and we just took his recommendation. The ship was excellent and the crew were superb. The only disappointment was our butler, who did very little and for the the odd time that we asked for something he still didn't come through. Otherwise, the entire experience was excellent. The shore excursions were very well organized and we were very pleased that all the gratuities were included. The motor-assisted bicycles were also a great amenity. We used two of them on one occasion and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were also very easy to learn to use. The meals were outstanding and the chef took great pride in his craft. The selection of wines was mediocre but sufficient. The bar selection was likewise very good and the bar staff carried the torch for service excellence. Overall, we had good value for our money and will likely cruise with Scenic again. Read Less

We just returned from a one week cruise on the Scenic Opal. Overall, we had a wonderful time, with a few disappointments. We were told that they would only pick us up at the Zurich Airport, so we stayed there overnight and arrived at the designated meeting spot at 11:45 as directed only to be told that we would not depart for Basel until 2:00. When we arrived at the ship, the welcome lunch was long over. I suppose we could have ordered room service, but we were not fully aware of what was offered, and no attempts were made to serve us lunch. To be truly honest, there is always some type of light food available in the bar area, and often the pastries there are far superior to those offered in the dining room. Our room was small, as expected, but very nicely laid out. The bathroom was modern, and everything worked effortlessly. My only complaint was that that there were two sliding doors, one for each closet, but one had to be fully closed before opening the other one. This caused all kinds of confusion as my husband and I tried to get dressed at the same time in the small room. Other than that, the room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. Scenic’s unique sliding glass balcony worked very well and gave us an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside. Our cabin stewardess was wonderful. We rarely saw her, but our room was always made up quickly twice a day. We saw our “butler” the very first day, but then only saw him tending the bar, working in Portobello, etc, leaving him little time to do anything for us. Some people seemed to have been able to order room service for breakfast, but there were no forms left in our room. The food was one of the lower points of the cruise. Breakfast and lunch were very good, but dinner often left something to be desired. Waiters rarely encouraged you to order breakfast or lunch from the elaborate menu placed on each table. Our “special” dinner at Portobello, was just terrible, watery minestrone, oddly flavored mushroom soup with foam, horrible “osso buco” and polenta, marginal tiramisu. It is very easy to cook excellent Italian food, but if you can’t, please leave it off the menu. The cannelloni was also terrible, and was offered more than once as a vegetarian alternative on the main dinner menu. I also felt that the pastry selections, of which there was usually only one at dinner, could have been a little more imaginative. A horrid rhubarb tart was offered as the only dessert on the final night. The other three choices were usually some sort of ice cream, a cheese plate or a fruit plate, that usually included too much apple and unripe melon and few berries of any sort. I was extremely disappointed with the dinner selection and quality on the Scenic Opal, although all of the staff were friendly and accommodating. Tours were well organized with excellent local guides, but I wish they didn’t all start at or before 9:00AM or earlier, causing a rush to eat breakfast and leave the ship. There was nothing offered in the afternoon, even though we often remained in port. I have to agree with a previous reviewer who said that the seats on the sundeck were so uncomfortable, it was almost impossible to spend much time up there. Kurt, the activities coordinator was wonderful, very accessible and organized everything beautifully, right down to our departures, which were well planned to the minute. We even had someone meet us at the airport to help with checking in. All in all, we had a very nice time. I just wish that there were afternoon tours offered and that the food in the dining room at dinner would have been better. Read Less

Chose this river cruise on Rhine River per a suggestion from a family member. This was our first river cruise, after being on several ocean cruises, outstanding experience over larger ships. Boat is limited to 80 cabins (160 customers) which allowed for more personal service to your want and needs. Tailoring to more experienced travelers. Cabins were very spacious and comfortable, enclosed balconies with full glasses view of river with ability to power down upper half of window to enjoy river. Having this extra balcony enclosure gave cabin more room even in poor weather. Meals and food was outstanding all of which were healthy choices. I would recommend Scenic river cruises to anyone who is looking for a relaxing vacation. I was not impressed with special commication devise "TailorMade", not only was it large & heavy it was very unreliable! Batteries would not hold a charge, not easy to use, which caused us to miss most of information of sites along the river. It was designed to work off GPS and beep when ship came up on a site to tell You about history, great idea but failed to beep. You could always scroll though list of sites, but then we had to rely on map to figure out where you were to seek out information. Suggest looking for modern technology, smaller in size, no bigger than cell phone, to hang on neck all day during land tours. I would have agree with another review, the sun deck furniture was uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time. Since there was little bar service provided on sun deck, we were forced to run back and forth to bar on 3rd floor. The few times we did see a bar service personnel on sun deck, they would not always ask if you wanted a drink. Bar service was slow at all times, only one bar on ship and at most two bartenders at any given time. Bartenders seemed overwhelmed and at times you could feel their frustration when you walked up. Very Organized excursions an entertaining Cruise Director. Cabin are modern, clean and well appointed and kept very clean. Ship is beautiful and very clean. Regular chef was on vacation an food was at best. 2 star quality. Uninspired, no taste and boring. Veal again, and again and again. Desserts aweful, soups aweful, pasta with no taste. As you can tell...food very very very BAD! I had better food at a old pub. Other than that, really nice. Staff really tried to please everyone. Tour guides were also very good and very knowlediable. Butlers are very concerned to make every need you have for filled. Great vacation but the food was practically unediable. Scenic should've done a better job of vetting their chefs because so many passengers were complaining about the food . Even though there was only 1 kid. On our cruise this is geared towards a senior crowd. If you are under 65, you will be n the minority! Read Less

We sailed on the Romantic Rhine and Moselle. We flew into Amsterdam and there was a Scenic transport person awaiting our arrival as we exited customs. They whisked us away to our hotel, Hilton Double Tree. The hotel was very clean and its location made it easy to step out the door and explore Amsterdam. We only stayed one night and the next morning we had a very delicious complementary breakfast. We checked our luggage with the Scenic representative in the lobby and they would transfer it to the ship. We went out for a mid-morning stroll. They boat is docked very close to the hotel. If you didn't want to take motor transportation it is a very short walk. So that is what we did. We boarded the boat around 12:00 noon. We were greeted and escorted into the Opal Lounge and then into the front of the ship's restaurant River Cafe. We had a light lunch and the cruise director, Richard Grey, was making his rounds greeting everyone. He was very friendly and very organized. The clients aboard this vessel mostly 60 and older. A few younger passengers were aboard and one teenager Richard did a great job making sure everyone knew what the physical ability levels were needed at each port. In my experience, every port was flat and easy to walk. As all over Europe, most sidewalks are streets are, as Richard said, cobblie, cobblie, cobblie. Most days they offered a gentle stroller group that took things a bit slower as to cater to guest who needed more time. All tours were well organized, interesting and the guides and coaches were great!!! Most tours only took a couple of hours then you had some free time to visit a pub or shop. We did both! Every evening before dinner, they would give a port talk to discuss the next days adventures. Always informative and brief. Dinner was open seating which was great...however, food taste...not so great, well actually awful. The dinner would start off with a choice of three appetizers, which was two bites. Then a choice of two soups one was always a no flavor consumme and the other a cream soup. The a choice of three entrees, usually a pasta selection, fish selection, meat selection. The portions were so tiny. One evening I ordered the lamb. It was three slices that were about .5 cm high by 7 cm long and NO TASTE. It was accompanied by a spear of potato and 2 florets of broccoli and 1 floret of cauliflower. Every night my husband ordered the always available steak and the entree of the day. Some evenings he would order all three entrees. Believe it or not, the desserts were even worse. They seem to be mass produced in a factory somewhere and frozen and thawed. Horrible! The regular chef was on vacation and we had a replacement, so maybe that is why it was so bad...who knows? The waiters were either great or aweful. We moved around until we found one who knew what was going on. Most night dinner lasted 2.5 hours. Waiting up to 30 plus minutes some evenings between courses. Ridiculous! The lounge staff was great always ready to get you a drink. The entertainment was okay. I think they need to have some type of entertainment every night. Kind of boring on nights they don't have acts coming aboard. Overall we liked it a lot. However, I think my opinion would be different if we were not traveling with other people. We kept ourselves entertained. The public spaces were clean and new. There was an outbreak of sickness on our cruise and in my opinion, it wasn't handled correctly. It spread throughout the boat and about 80% of the people became ill with a terrible cough. That was the downside, the upside is the ports of call were fabulous and the locks were interesting. I would recommend it, but I would say, travel in a group because it is a little boring at nighttime. Read Less

We have done a number of sea cruises but this was our first river cruise. We wanted a 5* all inclusive cruise and that is what we got. The staff were amazing and Richard, the cruise director was the best cruise director we have ever had. The ship was relatively small compared to the ocean going vessels but adequate. The gym had a great treadmill although overall it lacked a variety of equipment (I only wanted a treadmill so I was just fine). The food was usually excellent with one or two minor exceptions. The variety of eating venues for a ship of this size was excellent. On-board and onshore entertainment was super although we lost our resident pianist half way through the cruise (due to sickness) and he was not replaced (a minus there). Cabins were kitted out with some marvellous technology (including a great automatic guide machine) although I would have appreciated at least another 5m2 of space. The balcony with its' "up and down, electronically controlled window" was brilliant. Overall I would definitely cruise with Scenic again but I might also look at other 5* lines. Read Less

Firstly, the Romantic Rhine Mosel cruise is about the scenery, and we were not disappointed. The Scenic Opal is a well appointed ship, with staff that are attentive to any request. My wife's gluten free requirements, such as bread service and varied pasta alternatives was efficient and was varied with all meals. Occasionally, her bread service was already at the table when we arrived. Portobellos option is one to book for sure. Upscale food and wine selection will impress. Good job. The availability of different types of seating options in the lounge, hard/soft and or couch/chair provides a good alternative for any seating need. The availability of a public 24 hr coffee maker, for up to 6 different coffee choices is a plus. Varied tea selection will also satisfy most needs. The choice of available excursions, is varied and will satisfy the needs of most seasoned travellers. It is great they are all included and no additional charges apply. This was a special 10th Wedding Anniversary cruise, so we purchased the most expensive Royal Panorama Suite, #336. We were hoping for the best experience of our lives. I would have rated my experience 5 stars if this cabin was deserving. See cabin review below. Read Less

The ship was always beautifully clean, the staff were all excellent and attentive, and food was generally of a good standard.. The on board pianist was the best we've experienced- he had a great singing voice, engaged well with the customers, and also played guitar. Most of the excursions were really good, with excellent local guides. We appreciated the fact that it was truly all-inclusive, with a wide range of drinks on offer at all times, including champagne, and a variety of gins and single malt whiskies. Gratuities had been built into the cruise price. The cruise director was excellent, and dealt well with any issues. The one disappointment was having to take buses to the places on the Moselle because of lock maintenance. This made for some long journeys. Read Less

Although a late deal, this holiday was chosen to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary year. Embarcation went smoothly though we had to wait a short while for our cabin to be ready. The food was superb, plenty of choice from fish and vegetables for a non- meat eater. The waiters looked after our every need courteously and with good humour as did the bar staff. The entertainments provided were very good, mostly featuring younger, very talented entertainers, though we did not see all of them. I was happy with the excursions and choices provided apart from the problems right at the start of the cruise caused by a damaged lock at Antwerp and lock maintenance on the Moselle. Otherwise everything else was as planned and worked well. The Cruise Director's enthusiasm and commitment was boundless. The staff on board gave every appearance of being a happy, professional team. This was for us a quality holiday which had the added bonuses of being truly "all inclusive " with all tipping included in the initial cost which saved a lot of hassle at the end of the cruise. We may do another River Cruise in the future to a different destination. Read Less

We've river-cruised before but have never been on the Danube or to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. This itinerary seemed to fit all requirements and the cruise company was highly recommended. Excellent marks for the staff and service; the land tours were spot on and the local tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable; the dining arrangements and food were very good with an excellent chef and staff - all very warm, welcoming and friendly, meeting customers, not out-of-site. Highlights of the itinerary for me were Salzburg and the 3-day extension in Prague - extra days would have been even better. For such a supposedly top-quality all-inclusive company, the range and quality of wines was quite disappointing. I realise Scenic try to incorporate local food and wines but this area is not known for top wines (apart form a few German ones) and being an Australian company situated in Europe with many US and UK customers, I expected more wine choices from Australia, France, NZ or USA. After several days I found out there were some other options available (also limited and not top quality) but this was not widely communicated; it seemed they were being kept secret. We had paid for a top-deck deluxe suite but the Scenic practice of mooring alongside their sister ship (Pearl) meant that we could not use our balcony because there was a bedroom of the Pearl very adjacent. We also had to keep the curtains closed whilst using the cabin which was not acceptable for this standard of cruising. I may consider travelling with Scenic again but I will not take another river cruise with them. I need better views from my balcony - and much better wines at this price! Read Less

We departed Amsterdam and traveled to Budapest, it was an excellent trip, first of the staff were Excellent, our cruise director Alexander did a great job and was always engaged with the passengers, the entire staff lead by our board hotel manager Garon to Annett & Denisa, to the staff in the lounge, our servers for our meals and to those who looked after our cabin all were excellent and made us always feel good. The tours were excellent, to the quests on board, this was a trip to remember, thanks to the Scenic team on the Opal. The tours to the numerous castles, abbeys, churches to the concert in Vienna and of course to the Home of the sound of Music in Salzburg were are first class. From breakfast, to lunch through dinner the food was excellent and the staff all exceptional. So behalf of my wife, I say a huge THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERY CREW MEMBER ON THE SCENIC OPAL, thank you Read Less

First I should explain that overall I had a nice cruise on Scenic and I would recommend a Scenic River Cruise. Below is a listing of the "Good" and "Bad" experiences that I had while sailing with Scenic. The Good: Exceptionally clean ship and cabins. Hard working and enthusiastic crew members. Great wait staff in dinning rooms. Spectacular views on excursions. Bikes accessible for all guests at all ports. All inclusive cruise. Truly all inclusive. We didn’t pay a penny more than what we paid at booking!!! A lot of good wine. We were fortunate to have great weather on our trip. The Bad: We had a bad butler that didn't explain things to us. Rear Royal Panorama Suite is excessively noisy. Excessive noise and vibrations from engines. Noise and cigarette smell from crew break area that are above and below rear Royal Panorama suite. Food was not very good. Food was catered to Europeans. Food portions were very small. Food was served lukewarm Excursions are not explained in detail. Advice ...don't book the rear Panorama Suite and be prepared to be served European food. Read Less

We were on a special charter by the US Navy Supply Corp Officers. It was our first time on Scenic. I was disappointed in the service. it seemed as if they were short staffed and the dining room service was very slow and sometimes just plain poor. The staff was not well trained in serving, on the wines or on keeping in touch with the tables to make sure you were given what you needed. Many times had to go get coffee from the machines in the lounge on the next deck because the wait staff never asked if we wanted any. The buffets for lunch were very repetitious - there seemed to be very little variety. The dinners were just OK except for the specialty dinner in Portobello restaurant. This was Italian cuisine and it was excellent. There was also an 8 course special dinner for people in suites and it was quite nice but not to my taste because I am particular about certain foods. They had the habit of pushing the wine selection of the ship and not on the wine list that was available. Read Less

This was our first cruise of any description, so we decided on a week. We joined the ship at Budapest but because of low water in the Danube we had to move upstream, so didn't get to see anything a Budapest apart from an evening cruise downstream before turning round - although we did see what had inspired us - the Parliament Building - we were moored directly opposite. We stopped for two days in Vienna and explored there, but then we only got as far upstream as Passau, again because of low water levels. The ship, captain and crew could not be faulted. Our cabin was perfectly adequate, kept clean by our cabin steward, and morning tea served by our butler - luxury! A large walk=in shower with plenty of hot water. The amenities on board were plentiful, a good sized lounge/bar area which, I would think, could seat all the passengers at one go. The food was very good, always a nice selection on the buffet, or you could choose from the a la carte if there wasn't anything you fancied - which we did a couple of times. The passengers were mainly Canadian, Australian, American and a few English people, all very nice and pleasant. A variety of entertain was enjoyed in the lounge in the evenings - local dancers, etc. All in all we enjoyed our cruise, it was just a pity we didn't get up to Nuremberg as originally planned, but we were at the mercy of the water - no rain in Germany! 3 years ago we did Budapest to Amsterdam and enjoyed, this year we did the reverse and would recommend doing our first option. The hotel and cruise director great. The Opal is a new ship and very nice. The only fault we had was at the buffet, breakfast and lunch, the food was not hot or warm. The meat was still red and we would have preferred it to be At least pink when cooked. Leaving from Amsterdam, we felt that the excursions were rushed as it was afternoons and the ship had to sail. This is our personal opinion. The trip was fantastic all in all. Read Less

We cruised on the brand new Opal on her third cruise. We selected Scenic because their Rhine/Mosel cruise is 14 nights and includes several ports other lines do not. Another reason was everything is included -- all tips, drinks, shore excursions with multiple excursion choices offered in each port. The ship is gorgeous and incredibly "high tech." Most of the shore excursions were outstanding including ones to Zollverein coal mines, the Delta Water Works, the Arnheim Airborne Museum, and shopping with the chef. Scenic included several special events -- a cocktail reception and concert in the beautiful Rastatt Palace, cocktails at the Ehrenbretstein Fortress in Koblenz, and dinner at a choice of local restaurants near Veere. These were outstanding. The service from our butler and cabin attendant was super. The service in the lounge and dinning room, not so great. Food was a disappointment. Breakfast and lunch were buffets. The breakfast was the same every morning. We learned half way through the cruise you could ask the waiter what the breakfast special was (one example French toast). Problem was getting the attention of a waiter. While lunch on other lines were buffets, I do remember alternative cooked to order options. The only really great lunch was the "asparagus" lunch. Dinners in the dining room were boring. A choice of two appetizers, two soups, three mains, and two desserts. The meat always seemed to be overcooked roast, pot roast types, or stews. Definitely not high end food! Service was uneven. Portobello, the fine dining restaurant by reservation had excellent, innovative Italian food with good service. The ship also offered light breakfasts -- rolls and fruit and lunch--premade sandwiches, pastries, and pizza in the River Café section of the lounge. These were good. Fortunately the ship spent lots of time in the ports, so we often chose to eat at restaurants on shore. The uneven service might have been because this was only the third cruise. Included alcoholic beverages and wines were good. The ship made an effort with entertainment -- often bringing onboard local groups. Would I travel with Scenic cruises again? Absolutely. All my expectations were met except for the food and service in the dining room. I would just expect a four star experience with three star food. Read Less
