Our travel agt. recommended this cruise as an upscale cruise which was all inclusive. Our cabin was very spacius with plenty of storage. We had a wonderful balcony where we spent a great deal of time. The ship was new andvery comfortable. The food was ordinary with limited selection. Portions were adequate but were often over cooked. Our cabin steward, Hari, was wonderful and very helpful and responsive. Our butler, Vania, was one of the rudest cruise employee I have ever encountered in all of my cruising. She was surly and found many excuses to not do her job. That is assuming you couuld reach her by phone. Shore excursions were limited to two per stop. Most of the shore excursions were bus tours. The cruise wass very regimented. The cruisse director was knowledgeable. There was no medical care on board and most of the passengers were sick along with the captain. Scenic depended upon local medical people who often did not work on weekends. This cruise was nice but definitely not work the expense. Read Less

Our travel agent recommended this river cruise line when we wanted to take our first river cruise. This gorgeous "space ship" was absolute perfection. The staff was outstanding, the ports' activities were creative, and we loved every minute of it. It is the newest of Scenic's fleet, and it is wonderful!! We were met at the airport by a Scenic driver, which made embarkation simple and smooth. Everything the staff did was well thought out, and beautifully organized. We were on Diamond level, and had the best Butler ever. Milan, thank you!!! We were well and truly spoiled. The balconies on this ship are enclosed, but the windows can be raised and lowered, which made it a perfect, all-weather addition to the space in the room. The food was catered to our dietary requirements, and it was delicious. Every lunch had a local speciality for us to try. There were several special enrichment excursions - like a dinner in a castle, or our own private Octoberfest, that made the trip outstanding. When possible, we had local entertainers come aboard the ship, including Hungarian folk dancers! We will definitely choose Scenic again!!! Read Less

We departed Amsterdam and traveled to Budapest, it was an excellent trip, first of the staff were Excellent, our cruise director Alexander did a great job and was always engaged with the passengers, the entire staff lead by our board hotel manager Garon to Annett & Denisa, to the staff in the lounge, our servers for our meals and to those who looked after our cabin all were excellent and made us always feel good. The tours were excellent, to the quests on board, this was a trip to remember, thanks to the Scenic team on the Opal. The tours to the numerous castles, abbeys, churches to the concert in Vienna and of course to the Home of the sound of Music in Salzburg were are first class. From breakfast, to lunch through dinner the food was excellent and the staff all exceptional. The destinations were just what we wanted. Some of these we had visited previously on a bus trip, so were able to do other things this time. Some of the excursions were a bit of an early start; not always what you want when on holiday. Although, we understand that these are often dictated by sailing times and locks. We were made very welcome on board, and our cabin was wonderful. The ship, being new was very comfortable. The dining was first class; the four-course dinners were very good, and our invitations to Portobello's and Table la Rive especially were absolutely great. Having a choice of a full or light lunch was a very good option. We took the light lunch each time, and found that it was more than adequate. the service throughout the ship was right up there. We loved the butler service, and made full use of it. Milan was exceptional. Read Less

Just returned from our first ever River Boat Cruise - we booked with Scenic to do the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. We chose Scenic because it seemed to be the best value for money after attending many information sessions with various other cruise liners. Our experienced started with very helpful reservation staff for booking flights and hotels to extend our before and after cruise From the moment we stepped onto the ship it was amazing. our cabin was on the lower level and was more than comfortable for our needs, most of the time we enjoyed sailing sitting up on the top deck socializing with new friends, All the staff on Scenic Opal were very attentive and professional and quite talented from the show they put on one evening. Dining catered to everyone's needs/diet restrictions from formal dining to casual lunch in the Opal bar. One day we had a BBQ lunch up on the top deck, the food was great, the weather was perfect and we were setting sail for Cologne. Cologne was our last stop before entering Holland and beer fest was in full swing with lots of activities going on along the water front. Sadly following our excursion we had to be back on the boat and we were all wishing we had more time to enjoy some local beer. As we boarded all the crew were dressed in traditional German dress and were greeting us with nice cold German beer, even lunch that day was a German theme so we enjoyed our own private beer fest. There was 150 guest on board and at no time did we ever feel crowded, the ship is well laid out with lots of seating on the upper deck so everyone got to enjoy the great views sailing through the Rhine Gorge. Sadly our cruise came to an end but we are looking forward to cruising with Scenic again and are already planning our 2017 vacation. Read Less

My wife and I sailed on the Scenic Opal on the river Rhine from Sep. 17th to the 26th from Basel (Switzerland) to Amsterdam (Netherlands) We have never had such a wonderful time, although we were on the Danube 4 years ago with Scenic. We were in one of the Royal Balcony cabins which was spacious and comfortable. The Butler and the cabin attendant saw to all our needs which included our Wedding anniversary and my birthday. Dining was excellent, breakfast was a buffet (very extensive) and lunch and dinner were a la carte (waiter served). Port and shore excursions were interesting and informative all made exciting by the Tour Director. Travelling to the Ship from the Zurich airport (luxury coach) and returning to the Amsterdam airport (limousine) was handled by Scenic. Luggage transportation was all handled well as our cases were in the cabin before we got there. If you are going on a river cruise look no further than Scenic. Read Less

Chose this cruise because it a new ship & it fitted in with departure dates being a quiet time of year for our work. We were also told it was a Australian owned ship. This was our first River Cruise. We loved our cruise, staff were incredible, room was perfect (deluxe balcony suite, room 328), we had perfect weather which I gather was unusual for that time of year, but we were prepared for it to be cool, but it wasnt ,had couple days when it got to 30 degrees. We found whole trip to be very relaxing, no pressure for early starts till bit later in cruise & by then we were ready for change in pace, not that it was stressful. Food was amazing, small serves but you were offered 4 courses so we found it more than enough, endless choices of very good wine or champers. Enjoyed all excursions but one..... Xanata, unfortunately it was'nt very interesting compared to other towns we had been to and it was very rushed when we got to town (took30-40min by bus) we only had about 3/4 hour. Did go to brewery afterwards, but felt bit flat after the town. We personally wouldnt want stop their again. We enjoyed all the entertainment on board ship, especially staff entertainment, it was good fun. Next time we would book direct through Scenic. Even though cruise was expensive we felt it was worth money because of all alcohol and excursions paid for, you didn't get any nasty surprises at end of trip. Read Less

First I should explain that overall I had a nice cruise on Scenic and I would recommend a Scenic River Cruise. Below is a listing of the "Good" and "Bad" experiences that I had while sailing with Scenic. The Good: Exceptionally clean ship and cabins. Hard working and enthusiastic crew members. Great wait staff in dinning rooms. Spectacular views on excursions. Bikes accessible for all guests at all ports. All inclusive cruise. Truly all inclusive. We didn’t pay a penny more than what we paid at booking!!! A lot of good wine. We were fortunate to have great weather on our trip. The Bad: We had a bad butler that didn't explain things to us. Rear Royal Panorama Suite is excessively noisy. Excessive noise and vibrations from engines. Noise and cigarette smell from crew break area that are above and below rear Royal Panorama suite. Food was not very good. Food was catered to Europeans. Food portions were very small. Food was served lukewarm Excursions are not explained in detail. Advice ...don't book the rear Panorama Suite and be prepared to be served European food. Read Less

Cabin was compact, well provided and spotless. Service to cabin excellent. Mini bar topped up daily. Food on board was to a very high standard with plenty of choices. There were choices for different trips at each port, which were very well organised with local guides. The ships crew were friendly and hard working as was the staff in the restaurant and bar. The organised evening entertainment was very enjoyable. This was our second cruise with this company and were both excellent, the first cruise was on the Danube. This was a brilliant holiday. The boat was excellent, the staff were very helpful and polite, the food was some of the best we have ever experienced ( we have cruised many times with different companies) and the organisation during the cruise was first class. Our cabin was spacious, and very clean. The beds were very comfortable and the pillows soft. The toiletries were of a excellent quality and the cabin staff were very conscientious. The whole trip started well with a tour around Amsterdam, followed by many other excellent trips. The highlights were Heidelberg and the concert at the Palace in Rastatt. The "on-board" entertainment was good and great fun. We were most fortunate to have excellent weather, at times too hot but the air conditioning worked well. We have to mention Alexander, the Cruise Director, who was always well organised, efficient and full of fun and Walter, the Executive Chief, produced the most amazing fare. We have already booked our next holiday for 2017. Read Less

The on shore excursions were well organised, with very good guides and no additional costs once on the trip. The coaches were always on time and air conditioned which was very welcome as the temperature reached 95 degrees, which was a complete bonus for us, we expected some rain. We met some wonderful people from all over the world and forged friendship which will last for a long time. The onboard entertainment was to our taste and was varied and not over the top. This was our first river cruise and after some research and a recommendation from our travel agent, we decided on Scenic river cruise down the Rhine on the Opal. We sailed from Amsterdam to Basel and the trip was just great. We spent a couple of days in Amsterdam before embarkation and from the moment we connected with the Scenic staff, it was smooth sailing! :) Our cruise director Alex, was very knowledgeable, attentive, helpful and always available for any questions. The ship itself, the Opal, is beautiful. Our cabin was well-appointed and every space was used for maximum efficiency. There's a well stocked bar that is replenished daily. The shower is excellent. The balcony has room for 2 chairs and a table where one can sit and enjoy the pleasant shoreline views of the Rhine. The floor to ceiling windows that open halfway are an added bonus. While the weather was a little cool on days, we still enjoyed the open air that the balcony windows offer. The bed is comfortable and we slept extremely well. Each room comes with its own personal butler and Milan was excellent and very attentive. There is one complimentary laundry service as well as room service. The food on board was very good with a choice of the buffet or a la carte. In addition, there are 2 restaurants away from the main dining area that are very good. With only 150+ people on board, the chef is able to pay attention to detail and there is something for everyone and all tastes. The excursions offer loads of information and take you through quaint villages, historic sites and are guided by locals. The excursions are well planned, but if you feel like doing your own self-guided tour, that's an option. We did our own self-guided tour on e-bikes which are provided by the ship. We loved the option of exploring on our own and the e-bikes are so easy and fun! Highly recommend. The crew is well trained and personable and fun. There were a variety of evening events - a violinist; a ooum pah-pah accordion duo; a disco night; an operetta at the Rastatt Palace - something for everyone. There's a little fitness room (little) with a treadmill, rower, bike, and free weights, and a running track on the sun deck. The cruise down the Rhine is very beautiful. Lots to see - quaint villages, churches, castles...it's quite spectacular. All transfers from our hotel to embarkation and then debarkation were excellent and without a hitch. We were extremely pleased that we chose Scenic for our first river cruise. The all inclusive aspect was right for us. We loved the all inclusive. We met many wonderful people and made good friends with folks from Australia. Simply put - the trip was great! Read Less

We've travelled with Scenic before so we new we would be guaranteed a fantastic holiday with outstanding service. This was our first river cruise, and it certainly won't be our last. The ship was amazing, it is a 5 star hotel on the water. There is nothing for you to do other than relax and enjoy your holiday. The crew and cruise director are there 24/7 to ensure you have the best holiday and experience. The cities we visited were amazing. You have a choice of excursions in each stop which is great as not everyone likes to do the same thing. I cannot tell you how good the food, wine and bar service was. Our room was amazing we had our balcony with chairs and table where we could sit and relax as we sailed along the river. We would recommend travelling with Scenic on their river cruises, it might cost a little more than other companies but it's definitely worth it. Read Less

We just returned from a 7 day Rhine River Cruise on Scenic Opal for our 30th anniversary. This was our first river cruise and one of the newer ships in the fleet. I have nothing but positive feedback for our experience. We arrived a few days early in Amsterdam and spent a few days exploring on our own. Day of embarkation, we arrived at the boat a bit early but were welcomed on board, processed in and taken to our rooms right away. It's a beautiful ship and the rooms (deluxe balcony) were luxurious and plenty of storage and room for everything. We loved the balcony where you could open the patio window. Every meal was top notch and everything was included, (mini bar, wine, champagne, beer, excursions, everything). The staff was outstanding, and always friendly and helpful. It was truly relaxing to sit up top and watch the villages and castles go by. We did an excursion most everyday, and the organization of these and the local guides were all very good. There was time at most stops to be on your own to walk around of ride bikes also. Read Less

My friend and I wanted at least 10 nights onboard, and the dates had to fit in with her work commitments. We also wanted a better than standard cabin. Scenic's Rhine and Moselle fitted our criteria, and we had heard good reports from friends who travelled with them. The Scenic Opal is less than 2 years old. It is a really beautifully appointed and laid out ship. Our cabin (203) was classed as a Junior Balcony Suite and was well worth the extra money - great layout, spacious, plenty of hanging and storage space (2 women travelling together !), fantastic bathroom with a decent sized shower. Our personal butler Patrick was wonderful - nothing was too much trouble. Indeed all of the staff were excellent, always on hand, would do anything asked of them with a smile on their face, and always enquiring that everything was ok. The cuisine was first class. All of the activities we did we thoroughly enjoyed, and best of all they were all included so there was never any worry about getting in, or the cost. It was great to have electric bikes available so you could go for a little ride around if you wanted to do your own thing. In fact doing your own thing when you felt like it was so easy - our Cruise Director, Patrick, was always available for advice, provision of maps and local knowledge, suggestions and encouragement. And when we returned, he was waiting at the head of the gangplank to see if we'd had a good time. All alcoholic beverages were included (Moet champagne for breakfast !), and one of the unexpected highlights was sitting on the sundeck of our ship one evening while docked in Maastricht and being able to listen to the Andre Rieu concert taking place outdoors in the town square, while sipping an after dinner drink and watching the sunset. There were several ports that I really knew nothing about prior to the trip - but I enjoyed each and every one of them, sometimes just walking around and soaking up the local scene, having a coffee or an icecream, going to the local market. Wonderful. This is not a cruise for children, or those that want lots of nightlife and entertainment. Our pianist, Tim, was excellent, and you could sit with new friends, listen to familiar songs and music, and enjoy a drink - all that I wanted. Would I go again ? In a heartbeat, and definitely with Scenic. Read Less

we chose this cruise because we had already done Amsterdam to Budapest (twice) plus a few of Scenics other river cruises and wanted to see something different, different it was. We spent a pre night in Zurich at the Schweizerhof Hotel a very nice hotel, from here we taken by coach the following day to Basel to board the ship, as usual the meet and great was great with a cool drink and a rose for the ladies. If you cobblestone streets and beautiful old towns you'll love this tour, Colmar, Cochem, Maastrict, Antwerp and of course who doesn't love Rudesheim and the famous coffee. Of course there were many other places that name escape me. There also many excursions offered all included in the price, including Luxemberg, Heidelburg also Airborne Museum which is dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem in 1944, I had never heard of this battle so found it so very informative. The crew aboard the Scenic Opal were fabulous nothing was to much trouble, the food was near perfect thanks to Chef Walter, Cruise Director Patrik who did a wonderful job, always on hand if you needed to speak to him and his Port Talks which we had every night were a great way of letting us all know what was happening the next day. The cabin was really very nice, bathroom was larger than normal of other cruise ships. Pillows and mattress on the bed was very comfortable. The Butler service was very handy. I think you can't go wrong in choosing any of Scenic's River Cruises. Read Less

We chose Scenic as our preferred cruise option on the recommendation of some friends who had completed a cruise last year. Apart from having to wait in the hotel in Amsterdam for a few hours (could not get out due to the weather) the embarkation went very well. With the cruise ship Scenic Opal being only 12 months old the facilities were first class and the service provided was excellent. Our stateroom was very good and the service provided by our butler and cabin attendant was of the highest quality. The dining on the cruise ship was excellent with the provision of "fine dining" quality food and beverages. Apart from one item, the entertainment provided on board was excellent, especially the "crew shows". Shore excursions were very good and as this was our first time in Europe, we managed to see places we had never been to before. The only issue we had was that due to very high water levels, we were unable to cruise the Moselle River. However we must commend our cruise director for his efforts in organising coach excursions to various parts of the Moselle river area. Cruise ship staff travelled on the coaches with us to ensure the excursions guides were on hand and that we were well looked after. Our disembarkation was well organised and our cruise director went out of his way to make sure we got to our hotel in Zurich as soon as possible. Read Less

River cruising was an item high on my bucket list. My travel agent recommended Scenic because it was all-inclusive (no signing your way through the cruise!), excursions were covered, ships are new, etc. We went with her professional opinion and were not disappointed at all! The service was second to none. I looked forward to Patrik delivering my morning coffee with a smile. Stefan in the Opal Lounge was very attentive - always taking good care of us. The food was outstanding. We also took a tour of the galley - spotless. We particularly liked the personal touches and the wonderful fellow passengers. We made some great friends and hope to do this again soon. Although the weather was less than pleasant, Scenic and their amazing team made up for the lack of sunshine. They were hospitable, accommodating, entertaining and personable. Without hesitation, I would recommend Scenic be everyone's first choice for European River cruising. Read Less

This was our first river cruise after numerous ocean cruises. I was very pleased with our choice of itinerary (Rhine Highlights) and with Scenic Cruises. The Opal is a lovely ship, and I would highly recommend it. Our cruise was during a very high (as in flood stage) waters on the Rhine and Scenic emailed us two days before the cruise telling us of a change in embarkation port and the various options available for a complimentary transfer. It was a long day but we arrived at the ship just fine. River cruises have their own set of challenges with water levels that ocean cruises do not. You have to be flexible and "go with the flow" and hope your line reacts favorably, which the Scenic captain did! We enjoyed the ship very much, the public areas are very well designed and very functional. The upstairs outside deck was lovely but other than the walking area and the lovely large hot tub it could not be used all that much due to less than desirable weather. Our cabin was a standard cabin with a window, we decided not to spend the extra $$ on a balcony and had no second thoughts. The room was small, but adequate storage, a wonderfully comfortable bed, nice bathroom and great interactive TV. The staff on the ship all were exceptional and very helpful. Food is subjective, we absolutely loved the breakfast and lunch buffets. A great variety of foods, nicely presented and very tasty. You can also order off a menu, which we did not do as the items on the buffet were so good. Dinner features several choices of daily features plus an "always available" selection of entrees and salads. Some of the daily items were unusual but most were quite good. All alcoholic beverages are included at Scenic, and we enjoyed some great drinks during the day and with meals! We also loved the tours. The variety was good, the tour guides were excellent and they used very comfortable motorcoaches. The two special evening events, one a private opera concert at a castle and another atop a mountain overlooking Koblenz with a German band, beer and pretzels were very memorable events. Transfers provided by Scenic were also handled flawlessly. Evening entertainment featured some local performers and one night was a fun disco night with the crew and captain. We also very much enjoyed interacting with the other guests who were from a variety of countries in the world, all of whom seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as we did. In summary, I would not hesitate to book another river cruise and would definitely use Scenic again! Read Less

After seeing this cruise promoted on Getaway TV program we liked the route. Also we thought we were going to be getting food at a level we are used to on Seabourn and Silversea cruises. Unfortunately the food was the major let down. warm to cool for whole cruise even though many people complained. Answer was to get the plates hot. Also first nights buffet was worse than you can get in ordinary pubs in Melbourne. Food was all the same taste, slow cooked meat, very insipid. People that had cruised late last year on the sister ship to this were the first to complain as they said it was well below what they had had before. It was only the second cruise the boat had ever done with a new crew and only a week to get it sorted. Staff were nice and tried hard but lack of English did not help. How you translate White Russian cocktail into glass of Champagne on two nights running i don't know. Also if you ordered any variation to the menu i.e. leave something off plate that seemed almost impossible to comprehend. Also the layout of tables in the dinning room was ridiculous. So cramped waiters could not get past without bashing the back of your chair all the time. And in the case of the buffets you got bashed from everyone keeping getting up to get food. This is terrible especially as these cruises are aimed at the aged and on that basis lots of people with reduced mobility. Also the seating in the lounge was much the same, interior designer gone mad. One poor lady did fall on her face trying to manoeuvre through a maze of chairs and tables of all different types. On board entertainer was like a wet fish. Should have just played muisac through the speakers, would have been just as good. Sound system was awful and he obviously had no clue how to work it. Crew entertainment and crew disco night was best fun. They seemed to be able to get the sound right. Also there were quite a few people on board who had had cruise dates cancelled due to late delivery of boat and so were already a bit angry with Scenics response to all their replanning. Think this is possibly a case of a company expanding too fast and not able to keep a handle on their quality. Only river cruise we had ever done was with Avalon and the food quality was far higher than Scenic provided. Cant say i could recommend scenic and won't bother to pay this sort of money again. We booked this cruise with a number Navy Supply Corps Officer who had cruised on a different line in 2014. We cruised from Amsterdam to Basel and it was our first river cruise having done more than 30 ocean cruises primarily on Celebrity. Our experience on the Opal from the time we boarded until they dropped us off at the hotel in Zurich could NOT have been any better. We ere treated royally by everyone whether it was onboard the ship or on one of their all inclusive shore excursions. We saw all of the ship's officers more than once a day and Milan, our butler could not have been any more helpful or attentive Goran (First Officer) and Patrick.(Cruise Director) were everywhere and along with the Captain handled the luggage getting us off of the ship. We got a tour of the galley and I have no idea how Walter (the head chef) and his crew could turn out the great variety and quality of meals they served. The ship itself had plenty of space and our cabin had lots of room. We loved the up-down window that allowed us to view the passing scenery with an open or enclosed balcony at the push of a button. The lounge and dining room had plenty of seating and great staffs and top side had plenty of seating and a hot tub. There is also an exercise room that I used daily and my wife took advantage of some very friendly and expert salon services that were vry reasonably priced. I would take a Scenic cruise any chance I got and most especially on the Opal as it is hard to imagine a better crew on any ship. Read Less
