The all inclusive 5-star experience on board Scenic Opal was incredible. The food was amazing - in choice, presentation and quality - the chef (Norman) clearly loved his work. The service in the cabins, in the restaurant and throughout the ship was attentive, but not overwhelming and the attention to detail in the delivery of information, the organisation of the included tours and the extras that were organised exclusively for Scenic were second to none. I particularly liked that there were no announcements made on board and all the activities were listed clearly on the daily plan for the following day. There was also a huge amount of information about the ports and excursions available in literature in the cabin and on the in-cabin entertainment system. The shore excursions are all included in the price and you have a choice of destination at each stop, or you can decide to stay on board and enjoy cruising along the river. The local guides were excellent and all road transport was provided by Scenic's own coaches, which follow the cruise and meet us at each stop. I would definitely travel with Scenic again. Read Less

Then everything is included so I spent 7 euros in a week When you consider the amount of excellence received and wanted for nothing Cabin was spacious and well appointed with huge tv and luxury bedding with a bathroom fully stocked with fluffy towels and la octane toiletries The butler service was great with warm attentive service with wonderful treats and breakfast Delivered daily if you prefer to relax watching the river pass from wonderful open balcony I had good agent too who was excellent in making arrangements for me Read Less

Best holidays. Ever. By far. I hope my wife will submit her own review but we both enjoyed our Scenic experience very much. Scenic exceeded our expectations in so many different ways. Everything was top notch, but especially the people. They'd never save an effort to go the extra mile to please us. My wife was a bit picky with the food, so the waiters at Crystal Dining made it their point to always make her happy. They would bring her some delicious berries, some fruits and vegetables she might have just mentioned... Simply amazing. As for myself, I am not new to 5* experiences in different parts of the world but this was something special indeed. The food and the wine were invariably delicious, but there were also those small nice touches, like when you come from a lengthy excursion and on entering the ship you see the crew members offering you a hot towel and a refreshing drink. As soon as we'll have time for our next holidays, we'll be enjoying them with Scenic again, that's for sure. Read Less

My husband and I wanted to see Germany, Amsterdam and Budapest. I wanted a luxury ship that would attend to all my needs. I am blind and I appreciate the extra services we received as we booked one of the two largest suites on the ship. I had everything I needed to make this an excellent vacation. Our butler, Ratko Adjic went above and beyond for me. From morning cappiciinos to drawing my bath in the evening I was well treated. Dinner with the captain was marvelous. This cruise was all inclusive, alcohol, excursions and gratuities. The excursions were very well planned in each town. We were able to get a taste of the city and in two towns we had private concerts. It was fabulous. Richard the cruise director did a great job planning for our enjoyment. They never requested a credit card! We will travel with Scenic in 2020, Bardeaux to Bardeaux. Can't wait! Read Less

My husband and I have nothing but praise for this ship and her crew and Scenic in general. From the moment we boarded our 'spaceship' we were treated like royalty. We had a balcony cabin port side on the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise that was spacious and comfortable, with a bed you melted into at the end of an adventure filled day. The bathroom was very roomy and the water pressure and temperature were wonderful. All tours, drinks, food and entertainment were included so you didn't have to put your hand in your pocket - unless you wanted to buy something to take home. It was great to know that everything was paid for before we left Australia. The food was plentiful, delicious and varied, it changed from region to region - as we did, along with the wines. Wonderful new wines every day. So much food! "It must be time to eat." The staff were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble. Very friendly and funny - even at midnight when my husband wanted a cheeseburger and a glass of red. The ports of call were wonderful for someone who hasn't been to that part of Europe before. Easy to do, lots of walking on cobly streets but flat. Such history! It was magnificent. There were many shore excursions to choose from or you could just stay on board and do nothing in a quiet corner. Something for everyone. We made some wonderful new friends that we will keep in touch with. The age group was extremely varied from 20 somethings to 80 somethings. NOT full of old people. We were on the first tour of the season and I must admit it was better than going in high summer or later. No leaves on the trees meant you could see a lot more as you cruised the river. Another couple of weeks and all you will see is trees! Less people, no queues or crowds at any of the venues. Bliss. We have already booked our next Scenic trip. If you've been thinking about it - just do it. Read Less

We had cruised at sea many times over the years with a variety of high-end lines. More recently, we have been exploring Europe and we took two Viking cruises last year. These are very good products and we enjoyed them very much. They are advertised as all-inclusive, but they are not really, as you have to pay for drinks other than lunch and dinner, and you have to tip, which I hate with a passion. We were attracted to Scenic's advertising and booked a week's tour up the Rhine from Amsterdam. We returned two days ago, with a general view that Scenic is a clear winner over Viking in every way. The environment in the public areas is cleanly detailed in a modern style, with huge areas of glass. This is carried through to the circulation spaces, most of which are lined with white glass. Bars are completely open and well stocked. The wine list is substantial, though cruising through German waters revealed a number of unfamiliar wines to try. Food is very good in the main restaurant and better in the 'La Rive', which is fronted as a gourmand experience and can only be use once a week. I didn't like the menu for the other special restaurant (Portobello), so we didn't eat there. Excursions were enriching and excellent and for the most part, Scenic used their own fleet of buses to shadow the ship as it passed along the river so that they were available at ecah town if needed. Entertainment included soloists for Zither and Violin, and a German wit who 'taught' us all some German. Some electric bikes are available too, but I didn't see them used much. Tipping is banned, both aboard and on tours and busses. In fact the Cruise director asked to be informed if anyone tried to solicit a tip. I think this has to do with the company being Australian. In fact, the majority of passengers were Australian, with a moderate contingent from UK and a few from USA Read Less

Scenic Opal is a new ship (built in 2015) and it showed. Our cabin was very smart as were the Public Rooms. Everything was provided, bathrobes, slippers, large umbrella, hiking poles. All the staff were great. The cabin was serviced promptly, the butler brought our morning drinks on time and the waiters were attentive in the restaurants and bar. The trips in the ports were well organised and interesting with the cruise director giving a 15 minute talk each night on the next days options. The Tailormade devices were very useful on escorted and non escorted tours. The food was excellent with a good choice and standbys if you didn't like the menu. The wines, beer and spirits were high quality and readily available 24 hours with the minibar in cabin if needed. Dress was relaxed, smart casual no ties. The bulk of the passengers were Australian which gave a nice atmosphere. Two small negatives. Our cabin (C234) was at the stern and suffered from engine noise on several nights while we were trying to sleep. The dinner portions were small (we had afternoon tea from the River Café in the lounge to fill us up, so its not a big problem). Expensive but great value . Read Less

From the time we arrived until our departure everything ran with military precision. Our bags were put on the bus at Budapest airport and the next time we saw them they were laid out on the bed in our cabin. The Scenic Opal was first class, with first class amenities. The staff were first class, nothing being to much trouble. Patric, our butler for the duration of the cruise couldn't have been more helpful. The entire staff deserve a pat on the back as does the cruise director who kept everyone informed on a daily basis as to upcoming events. The food was a standout, with fantastic dining, unbelievable. The choice of excursions covered many and varied aspects of European life and attractions. Disembarkation was smooth (although we did not want to leave, having been thoroughly spoilt ). Bags left at the cabin door turned up at Amsterdam airport, staff even directed us to the appropriate airline check in counter. All in all a great trip and at that time of year the trees were in their Autumn colors. Well done Scenic. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the reputation of Scenic, the cruises available at the time of the year that I wanted to go & most importantly because they were prepared to waive the single supplement cost as October is a slightly quieter time of the year. Without that option, it would have been out of my price range. The fly free option was awesome too. From the moment I walked onto the ship (Scenic Opal), to the moment I got off the ship nothing was too much to ask. The off board activities were very professionally organised. The butlers, cabin attendants, waiter / waitresses, bar people were absolutely first class. It was refreshing to see their smiling, happy faces each day. They quite obviously love their jobs. My biggest praise is to Chef Walter & his team of chefs for their awesome food. My allergy to garlic was taken very seriously. Each morning I received a menu which showed what food contained garlic highlighted in red, so that I knew what to avoid. Which meant I had absolutely no food issues whatsoever. I think that the best off ship activity was Shopping with the Chef (Walter) in Vienna. The food market was great & the variety of foods available were unbelievable. Quite un-touristy place to visit, but excellent. Read Less

Our cruise consisted of 14 nights cruising from Budapest to Amsterdam with three days at either end in Prague and Paris. We chose this cruise because Scenic was recommended to us by quite a few people. The fact that everything is included appealed to us. The timing of the cruise enabled us to get business class flights for a much cheaper price, otherwise we may have chosen to cruise in warmer weather. However, the cold weather and quite a few rainy days didn't detract from our experience. We found the ship to be most comfortable with adequate room to relax without being surrounded by people all the time. The cabins were well appointed with quality bedding, toiletries and storage space. The balcony was wonderful to enjoy some time out with a glass of wine. We found all of the staff very helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. If anyone found fault with the food provided, they would be hard to please. It was varied, plentiful (maybe too plentiful judging by my shrunken clothing) and of good quality. I took a galley tour towards the end of the cruise and was amazed at what the kitchen staff could accomplish in such a confined area. Day excursions were for the most part well organised and of good quality. My only wish is that maybe some of the walking tours were shorter and had less of the history (which I couldn't retain anyway) and more time to explore areas in our own time. I sometimes felt that we spent too much in some places and not enough in others. I understand though that in 14 days you can really only get a glimpse of so many cities and towns. Overall, I would certainly recommend and travel with Scenic again. Being a luxury cruise I particularly enjoyed the concept of unpacking only once and having your every need taken care of. A wonderful experience! Read Less

Our travel agent recommended this river cruise line when we wanted to take our first river cruise. This gorgeous "space ship" was absolute perfection. The staff was outstanding, the ports' activities were creative, and we loved every minute of it. It is the newest of Scenic's fleet, and it is wonderful!! We were met at the airport by a Scenic driver, which made embarkation simple and smooth. Everything the staff did was well thought out, and beautifully organized. We were on Diamond level, and had the best Butler ever. Milan, thank you!!! We were well and truly spoiled. The balconies on this ship are enclosed, but the windows can be raised and lowered, which made it a perfect, all-weather addition to the space in the room. The food was catered to our dietary requirements, and it was delicious. Every lunch had a local speciality for us to try. There were several special enrichment excursions - like a dinner in a castle, or our own private Octoberfest, that made the trip outstanding. When possible, we had local entertainers come aboard the ship, including Hungarian folk dancers! We will definitely choose Scenic again!!! Read Less

The destinations were just what we wanted. Some of these we had visited previously on a bus trip, so were able to do other things this time. Some of the excursions were a bit of an early start; not always what you want when on holiday. Although, we understand that these are often dictated by sailing times and locks. We were made very welcome on board, and our cabin was wonderful. The ship, being new was very comfortable. The dining was first class; the four-course dinners were very good, and our invitations to Portobello's and Table la Rive especially were absolutely great. Having a choice of a full or light lunch was a very good option. We took the light lunch each time, and found that it was more than adequate. the service throughout the ship was right up there. We loved the butler service, and made full use of it. Milan was exceptional. Read Less

Just returned from our first ever River Boat Cruise - we booked with Scenic to do the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. We chose Scenic because it seemed to be the best value for money after attending many information sessions with various other cruise liners. Our experienced started with very helpful reservation staff for booking flights and hotels to extend our before and after cruise From the moment we stepped onto the ship it was amazing. our cabin was on the lower level and was more than comfortable for our needs, most of the time we enjoyed sailing sitting up on the top deck socializing with new friends, All the staff on Scenic Opal were very attentive and professional and quite talented from the show they put on one evening. Dining catered to everyone's needs/diet restrictions from formal dining to casual lunch in the Opal bar. One day we had a BBQ lunch up on the top deck, the food was great, the weather was perfect and we were setting sail for Cologne. Cologne was our last stop before entering Holland and beer fest was in full swing with lots of activities going on along the water front. Sadly following our excursion we had to be back on the boat and we were all wishing we had more time to enjoy some local beer. As we boarded all the crew were dressed in traditional German dress and were greeting us with nice cold German beer, even lunch that day was a German theme so we enjoyed our own private beer fest. There was 150 guest on board and at no time did we ever feel crowded, the ship is well laid out with lots of seating on the upper deck so everyone got to enjoy the great views sailing through the Rhine Gorge. Sadly our cruise came to an end but we are looking forward to cruising with Scenic again and are already planning our 2017 vacation. Read Less

We were in one of the Royal Balcony cabins which was spacious and comfortable. The Butler and the cabin attendant saw to all our needs which included our Wedding anniversary and my birthday. Dining was excellent, breakfast was a buffet (very extensive) and lunch and dinner were a la carte (waiter served). Port and shore excursions were interesting and informative all made exciting by the Tour Director. Travelling to the Ship from the Zurich airport (luxury coach) and returning to the Amsterdam airport (limousine) was handled by Scenic. Luggage transportation was all handled well as our cases were in the cabin before we got there. If you are going on a river cruise look no further than Scenic. Read Less

Chose this cruise because it a new ship & it fitted in with departure dates being a quiet time of year for our work. We were also told it was a Australian owned ship. This was our first River Cruise. We loved our cruise, staff were incredible, room was perfect (deluxe balcony suite, room 328), we had perfect weather which I gather was unusual for that time of year, but we were prepared for it to be cool, but it wasnt ,had couple days when it got to 30 degrees. We found whole trip to be very relaxing, no pressure for early starts till bit later in cruise & by then we were ready for change in pace, not that it was stressful. Food was amazing, small serves but you were offered 4 courses so we found it more than enough, endless choices of very good wine or champers. Enjoyed all excursions but one..... Xanata, unfortunately it was'nt very interesting compared to other towns we had been to and it was very rushed when we got to town (took30-40min by bus) we only had about 3/4 hour. Did go to brewery afterwards, but felt bit flat after the town. We personally wouldnt want stop their again. We enjoyed all the entertainment on board ship, especially staff entertainment, it was good fun. Next time we would book direct through Scenic. Even though cruise was expensive we felt it was worth money because of all alcohol and excursions paid for, you didn't get any nasty surprises at end of trip. Read Less

Our cabin was spacious, and very clean. The beds were very comfortable and the pillows soft. The toiletries were of a excellent quality and the cabin staff were very conscientious. The whole trip started well with a tour around Amsterdam, followed by many other excellent trips. The highlights were Heidelberg and the concert at the Palace in Rastatt. The "on-board" entertainment was good and great fun. We were most fortunate to have excellent weather, at times too hot but the air conditioning worked well. This was our first river cruise and after some research and a recommendation from our travel agent, we decided on Scenic river cruise down the Rhine on the Opal. We sailed from Amsterdam to Basel and the trip was just great. We spent a couple of days in Amsterdam before embarkation and from the moment we connected with the Scenic staff, it was smooth sailing! :) Our cruise director Alex, was very knowledgeable, attentive, helpful and always available for any questions. The ship itself, the Opal, is beautiful. Our cabin was well-appointed and every space was used for maximum efficiency. There's a well stocked bar that is replenished daily. The shower is excellent. The balcony has room for 2 chairs and a table where one can sit and enjoy the pleasant shoreline views of the Rhine. The floor to ceiling windows that open halfway are an added bonus. While the weather was a little cool on days, we still enjoyed the open air that the balcony windows offer. The bed is comfortable and we slept extremely well. Each room comes with its own personal butler and Milan was excellent and very attentive. There is one complimentary laundry service as well as room service. The food on board was very good with a choice of the buffet or a la carte. In addition, there are 2 restaurants away from the main dining area that are very good. With only 150+ people on board, the chef is able to pay attention to detail and there is something for everyone and all tastes. The excursions offer loads of information and take you through quaint villages, historic sites and are guided by locals. The excursions are well planned, but if you feel like doing your own self-guided tour, that's an option. We did our own self-guided tour on e-bikes which are provided by the ship. We loved the option of exploring on our own and the e-bikes are so easy and fun! Highly recommend. The crew is well trained and personable and fun. There were a variety of evening events - a violinist; a ooum pah-pah accordion duo; a disco night; an operetta at the Rastatt Palace - something for everyone. There's a little fitness room (little) with a treadmill, rower, bike, and free weights, and a running track on the sun deck. The cruise down the Rhine is very beautiful. Lots to see - quaint villages, churches, castles...it's quite spectacular. All transfers from our hotel to embarkation and then debarkation were excellent and without a hitch. We were extremely pleased that we chose Scenic for our first river cruise. The all inclusive aspect was right for us. We loved the all inclusive. We met many wonderful people and made good friends with folks from Australia. Simply put - the trip was great! Read Less

We just returned from a 7 day Rhine River Cruise on Scenic Opal for our 30th anniversary. This was our first river cruise and one of the newer ships in the fleet. I have nothing but positive feedback for our experience. We arrived a few days early in Amsterdam and spent a few days exploring on our own. Day of embarkation, we arrived at the boat a bit early but were welcomed on board, processed in and taken to our rooms right away. It's a beautiful ship and the rooms (deluxe balcony) were luxurious and plenty of storage and room for everything. We loved the balcony where you could open the patio window. Every meal was top notch and everything was included, (mini bar, wine, champagne, beer, excursions, everything). The staff was outstanding, and always friendly and helpful. It was truly relaxing to sit up top and watch the villages and castles go by. We did an excursion most everyday, and the organization of these and the local guides were all very good. My friend and I wanted at least 10 nights onboard, and the dates had to fit in with her work commitments. We also wanted a better than standard cabin. Scenic's Rhine and Moselle fitted our criteria, and we had heard good reports from friends who travelled with them. The Scenic Opal is less than 2 years old. It is a really beautifully appointed and laid out ship. Our cabin (203) was classed as a Junior Balcony Suite and was well worth the extra money - great layout, spacious, plenty of hanging and storage space (2 women travelling together !), fantastic bathroom with a decent sized shower. Our personal butler Patrick was wonderful - nothing was too much trouble. Indeed all of the staff were excellent, always on hand, would do anything asked of them with a smile on their face, and always enquiring that everything was ok. The cuisine was first class. All of the activities we did we thoroughly enjoyed, and best of all they were all included so there was never any worry about getting in, or the cost. It was great to have electric bikes available so you could go for a little ride around if you wanted to do your own thing. In fact doing your own thing when you felt like it was so easy - our Cruise Director, Patrick, was always available for advice, provision of maps and local knowledge, suggestions and encouragement. And when we returned, he was waiting at the head of the gangplank to see if we'd had a good time. All alcoholic beverages were included (Moet champagne for breakfast !), and one of the unexpected highlights was sitting on the sundeck of our ship one evening while docked in Maastricht and being able to listen to the Andre Rieu concert taking place outdoors in the town square, while sipping an after dinner drink and watching the sunset. There were several ports that I really knew nothing about prior to the trip - but I enjoyed each and every one of them, sometimes just walking around and soaking up the local scene, having a coffee or an icecream, going to the local market. Wonderful. This is not a cruise for children, or those that want lots of nightlife and entertainment. Our pianist, Tim, was excellent, and you could sit with new friends, listen to familiar songs and music, and enjoy a drink - all that I wanted. Would I go again ? In a heartbeat, and definitely with Scenic. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because of the destination - Rhine and Moselle Rivers. The length of the cruise was also what we wanted. Scenic is Australian owned. We heard good reports from people who have previously cruised with Scenic. We liked the idea that it was all inclusive. We thought the on board service and meals were first class. The Portobello night was excellent as was the La Rive dining. Nothing was too much trouble for the crew. The variety of excursions was excellent. The cabins were spacious and the ship itself was kept spotless at all times. Our Cruise Director, Patrik, was exceptional as were his organisational skills. He kept us informed at all times and his information sessions were very useful. The e-bikes are a great concept and made cycling easy. We feel the free WIFI needs to be improved and the on board entertainment needs more variety. Read Less
