We have done a number of sea cruises but this was our first river cruise. We wanted a 5* all inclusive cruise and that is what we got. The staff were amazing and Richard, the cruise director was the best cruise director we have ever had. The ship was relatively small compared to the ocean going vessels but adequate. The gym had a great treadmill although overall it lacked a variety of equipment (I only wanted a treadmill so I was just fine). The food was usually excellent with one or two minor exceptions. The variety of eating venues for a ship of this size was excellent. On-board and onshore entertainment was super although we lost our resident pianist half way through the cruise (due to sickness) and he was not replaced (a minus there). Cabins were kitted out with some marvellous technology (including a great automatic guide machine) although I would have appreciated at least another 5m2 of space. The balcony with its' "up and down, electronically controlled window" was brilliant. Overall I would definitely cruise with Scenic again but I might also look at other 5* lines. Read Less

Firstly, the Romantic Rhine Mosel cruise is about the scenery, and we were not disappointed. The Scenic Opal is a well appointed ship, with staff that are attentive to any request. My wife's gluten free requirements, such as bread service and varied pasta alternatives was efficient and was varied with all meals. Occasionally, her bread service was already at the table when we arrived. Portobellos option is one to book for sure. Upscale food and wine selection will impress. Good job. The availability of different types of seating options in the lounge, hard/soft and or couch/chair provides a good alternative for any seating need. The availability of a public 24 hr coffee maker, for up to 6 different coffee choices is a plus. Varied tea selection will also satisfy most needs. The choice of available excursions, is varied and will satisfy the needs of most seasoned travellers. It is great they are all included and no additional charges apply. This was a special 10th Wedding Anniversary cruise, so we purchased the most expensive Royal Panorama Suite, #336. We were hoping for the best experience of our lives. I would have rated my experience 5 stars if this cabin was deserving. See cabin review below. Read Less

We chose this because it was sailing on the Moselle, one of the few rivers we hadn't yet sailed on-we've taken many river cruises. we had been told that Scenic were good and so wanted to see for ourselves. it was a well-priced cruise.. The ship was always beautifully clean, the staff were all excellent and attentive, and food was generally of a good standard.. The on board pianist was the best we've experienced- he had a great singing voice, engaged well with the customers, and also played guitar. Most of the excursions were really good, with excellent local guides. We appreciated the fact that it was truly all-inclusive, with a wide range of drinks on offer at all times, including champagne, and a variety of gins and single malt whiskies. Gratuities had been built into the cruise price. The cruise director was excellent, and dealt well with any issues. The one disappointment was having to take buses to the places on the Moselle because of lock maintenance. This made for some long journeys. Read Less

Although a late deal, this holiday was chosen to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary year. Embarcation went smoothly though we had to wait a short while for our cabin to be ready. The food was superb, plenty of choice from fish and vegetables for a non- meat eater. The waiters looked after our every need courteously and with good humour as did the bar staff. The entertainments provided were very good, mostly featuring younger, very talented entertainers, though we did not see all of them. I was happy with the excursions and choices provided apart from the problems right at the start of the cruise caused by a damaged lock at Antwerp and lock maintenance on the Moselle. Otherwise everything else was as planned and worked well. The Cruise Director's enthusiasm and commitment was boundless. The staff on board gave every appearance of being a happy, professional team. This was for us a quality holiday which had the added bonuses of being truly "all inclusive " with all tipping included in the initial cost which saved a lot of hassle at the end of the cruise. We may do another River Cruise in the future to a different destination. Read Less

From the minute we boarded in Basel Switzeland to the last minute when we disembarked in Amsterdam Switzerland, the staff were absolutely amazing. Always smiling, wishing you a good morning, a good afternoon, a good time on your excursions. Richard Grey the cruise director was very entertaining. Food was excellent and the staff in the dining room were amazing. Norm the chef was always around asking if everything was OK and the variety of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic were great. Daniel the waiter was always ready with a smile, a little joke and a cold drink. The staff were always cleaning/polishing somewhere and the rooms were very clean. Excursions were very good and the coordination from ship to bus and return were very well executed. Tours guides were easy to understand. We would definitely cruise with Scenic again and I am sure that we would get the same quality on the next cruise. Read Less

Chosen because of the itinerary and length of the cruise. We have travelled with Scenic before and were entirely satisfied with our previous experience. We were pleased to be offered the opportunity to travel from a local airport and were delighted with the convenience of this on both outward and return flights. Other river trips we have had in the past were of inferior quality. We were very pleased with the space and quality of facilities in the cabin. Our one reservation was the standard of the evening meal which we felt fell below the standard of the lunches. On several occasions we complained at the coolness of the served meals. Excursions were generally very good with good guides. We noted that the mobile headsets provided for the excursions are now very clumsy compared to designs used by other companies. We regret that we will probably not be travelling with Scenic again because we have now completed our European river trip desires and do not wish to experience long distance ocean cruises. Read Less

We took dad who is 92 and wanted a single cabin right by us. This ship has only one single cabin but you don't have to pay as if you were a couple. Altho there is a lift the stairs are shallow and easy to use. Even up to the top deck, which the lift does not reach, he was fine as there are good rails to hold on to either side. Everything is included in the price - meals, snacks, anytime any type of drink, excursions, tips, entertainment, room service. The food was of very good quality and never repeated. It was great to have different wines from a variety of regions of Europe. There was a thorough and fun port talk every evening by our superb cruise director Richard Grey (altho personally we would have liked more detailed advance information). The excursions were very good and efficiently run. There was always lots to do and something to see going on on the river as well as the ever changing views. We enjoyed going through the locks as well. It was a little disturbing at night on the occasions when we were moving but ear plugs may have helped - we just got up to see what was going on. The ship is beautiful. Very clean and stylish. The staff were absolutely brilliant. Professional and friendly. They never showed any stress even if they were rushed off their feet it dint show. nothing was too much trouble. Second to none. On provisioning days we observed everyone helping. Even the receptionist was carrying huge bags of onions. The crew worked non stop. Very impressive. Altho Scenic are not cheap I would highly recommend this cruise and boat as well as the staff, Read Less

Have done over 25 Ocean cruises from large to small. This was first river cruise. Although Scenic has been around for over 25 years, they have only been marketing in US for a few years. Picked Scenic based on independent ratings on line, as this was highest rated as of 2016. Was not disappointed. While I have seen many lines market as pretty much all-inclusive, this is the real deal. Based on value, this was the best I have ever experienced. With the exception of some free time expenses on land and river portions, I never reached for my credit card or wallet. The only extra on board was for some laundry service. Tips included, all food and drinks (including alcohol) included, all excursions included. Beautiful ship. Great service. If you want to be surrounded by Americans, may not be the best choice for you. This is an Australian company and vast majority of our ship mates were Aussies, Kiwis, Brits and Canadians.....the friendliest and most fun people in the world. Also, gauge your dining expectations based on the small size of kitchen facilities on a river boat. Food was more than acceptable and was not gourmet level. If you are a foodie, stick to upscale ocean cruises. Individual GPS system allows easy listening on guided tours, create your own tour on every stop, sitting on your balcony and having every point of interest pointed out as you sail by. Read Less

I heard so many glowing reports of scenic, I had high expectations...they were exceeded. There were four of us (2 couples) travelling together We were on Scenic Opal on the Jewel deck, down at water level. It was fabulous, plenty of space, eye level window, great view of the scenery, but we spent most of our time in the lounge or the front deck or on the top deck, even if we had a balcony cabin we would have been up in the lounge etc so that you can see BOTH sides of the river. The food was wonderful, my friend has many dietary needs was so well looked after she was thrilled. Our cruise director Richard Grey was BRILLIANT the entertainment on board, the excursions, guides and staff were second to none. Budapest to Amsterdam was the BEST way to go. Loved it. Well done SCENIC I marked Embarkation down one point because: One thing could be improved is information on arrival. In the 'Welcome' book it stated we were to transfer to the ship from the front of our hotel at 11am and it also stated 'Embarkation at the ship starts no earlier than 3pm" This caused some confusion. Guessing we would be at the ship by 11:30, were we to stand around for 3 and a half hours before getting on? did we drop our luggage there and go sightseeing for a couple of hours? No it all went very smoothly the coach picked us up, took us along the river to the ship, we went on board to a lovely welcome with snacks and drinks available immediately, while we waited to be shown to our rooms, so maybe the written word of the 'Welcome' could be changed to show that you go to the lounge whilst waiting. Thanks again for a wonderful experience Read Less

All inclusive, significant added extras, very good food, excellent specialty dining, no tipping, courteous staff, good value for money. We booked an end suite which turned out to be very noisy, with significant shaking. A lesson to never book an end room was learned. The cruise itself was excellent, the crew were super, the food varied at each sitting so boredom never set in. The wait staff were attentive and remembered what you liked or did not like. The food was very good. We started out with very little free time unlike an ocean cruise there were no "sea days" just a constant sting of sights to see, it almost seemed like an endurance test but eventually slowed down to an easier pace. All of the sites were worth seeing, the guided tours were well planned with knowable guides and always plenty of free time to explore on your own. The special Scenic events were indeed very special. All-in-all an enjoyable trip. Read Less

My party and I had 2 days in Budapest before we boarded the ship and added 2 days in Amsterdam at the end of our cruise on the advice of friends who had taken the same cruise. Great suggestion! Embarking and disembarking were both well organized and quick! The Opal is an amazing ship, spotless and well planned out. Dining room, food and staff were exceptional. Chef Norm is a master with food. Our choices each night were hard to choose between. If you tire of the buffet you can choose off the menu anytime. It is not always a buffet if you choose not to. The service from everyone is above and beyond. Entertainment was wonderful, each night Antonio the piano/guitar/singer played songs from all eras. All had such a great time and a lot of dancing ensued most nights. The cruise director Richard Grey brought outside entertainment on ship some nights which had everyone on awe. I cannot say enough about the service from all employees on the Opal, if you needed something, they went above and beyond to get it for you. Nothing was too big or too small, and always with a smile. Ports and shore excursions, I enjoyed all as I am interested in history, however, if you are not up to it or not interested in a certain excursion you can stay on the ship and relax. Your choice! Now for my last yahoo! Our cruise director Richard Grey was the most extraordinary person. He made our cruising so seamless, all excursions on time and fun. If you needed info on anything he would get it for you. Always there with a smile and hello, he remembers many names of passengers, information on the cities we visit, the port talks, and even dressed up a couple of nights (oh, I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there) he was hilarious! One last item, the trip may cost a bit more than another cruise line, however, ALL tips, excursions, food and alcohol are included in your price upfront. No bill at the end of the trip unless you use the hairdresser or masseuse. We had private functions for Opal passengers only, which would be an added cost on another cruise line, but not for Scenic passengers! Amazing trip and amazing people. As you can see, I totally enjoyed my trip and would certainly go again on another trip and different route. I highly recommend Scenic Cruise lines! Debra N Read Less

We wish we had started one or two days earlier in Bucharest, it is a beautiful city and much better than we expected. The spaceship was fantastic, it looks the part and, boy it is the part. The welcome onboard was 5 star we were greeted royally and nothing disappointed us. We had high expectations and they were fully met and on occasions significantly exceeded. We had a cabin on the top deck ( balcony suite). The suite had everything we needed, everything is so cleverly designed to maximise the space and make everything easily accessible. The crew were fantastic nothing was too much trouble and the service was impeccable as was the quality and presentation of the food. The onboard entertainment is limited but enjoyable - this is not a big ship, 160 or so people, and people get to know each other quickly and tend to chat away whilst enjoying the complimentary drinks. The shore excursions are varied, you usually had 3 to choose from and there was always at least one that suited us. The Scenic Enrich events were great - we went to a local home for a real Bulgarian dinner, it was a great experience! What we most loved was the fact that we never needed money from the moment the driver picked us up from home until he dropped us back home at the end of the tour. If you want to stay in a 5 Star hotel that travels with you then this is definitely the holiday for you. We've booked for another Scenic River Cruise in September to Russia. Read Less

Overall a top drawer experience. Very little to fault. Felt the tour guide in Budapest was a bit difficult to follow at times, but all other guides were professional, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Chef and dining room staff superb. Also a big thank you to the support staff e.g. cabin crew and cleaning staff. The excursions were spot on in terms of local interest. Coach journeys were sometimes a little lengthy, but you can't do anything about the geographical location of the Danube! The evening entertainment was pleasant, and although the pianist/ guitarist was good, sometimes peace and quite is a preferred option (Americans guests are noisy enough). The Tour Director, although sometimes tested to the limit, was calm and professional, and kept the whole excursion running like clockwork, He should be made Chief Executive of Scenic immediately. I did a full assessment of all the river cruises and Scenic, although amongst the most expensive came out as good value for money as an all-inclusive cruise. Eveything was included. The ship was superb, however the journey there was not at all good. We were supposed to fly from Bristol to Budapest via Brussels. However, our flight was cancelled on the tarmac, we were transferred to Heathrow via taxi, then had more delayed flights after that, arriving in Budapest at 2230 rather than 1120 originally. The meals are superb and the butler service for morning tea was great. Meals to mention are the Tasting menu, which complemented seve courses to five wines, and the exclusive la Rive meal. The highlight was the exclusive concert at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna. The music was out of this world and the setting magnificent. Other excursions were to Salzburg, and Melk Abbey. The guides were excellent and the hand held guides worked well. Although we were early in the season all the staff were extremely well trained to a high standard. The fellow passengers were a mixed crowd from UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and we had a great time. We even had a Grand National sweepstake and my horse came third! The shore excursions were all excellent with the personal guide being very good. Would I go again? Definitely Read Less

The all inclusive 5-star experience on board Scenic Opal was incredible. The food was amazing - in choice, presentation and quality - the chef (Norman) clearly loved his work. The service in the cabins, in the restaurant and throughout the ship was attentive, but not overwhelming and the attention to detail in the delivery of information, the organisation of the included tours and the extras that were organised exclusively for Scenic were second to none. I particularly liked that there were no announcements made on board and all the activities were listed clearly on the daily plan for the following day. There was also a huge amount of information about the ports and excursions available in literature in the cabin and on the in-cabin entertainment system. The shore excursions are all included in the price and you have a choice of destination at each stop, or you can decide to stay on board and enjoy cruising along the river. The local guides were excellent and all road transport was provided by Scenic's own coaches, which follow the cruise and meet us at each stop. I would definitely travel with Scenic again. Read Less

We've river-cruised before but have never been on the Danube or to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. This itinerary seemed to fit all requirements and the cruise company was highly recommended. Excellent marks for the staff and service; the land tours were spot on and the local tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable; the dining arrangements and food were very good with an excellent chef and staff - all very warm, welcoming and friendly, meeting customers, not out-of-site. Highlights of the itinerary for me were Salzburg and the 3-day extension in Prague - extra days would have been even better. For such a supposedly top-quality all-inclusive company, the range and quality of wines was quite disappointing. I realise Scenic try to incorporate local food and wines but this area is not known for top wines (apart form a few German ones) and being an Australian company situated in Europe with many US and UK customers, I expected more wine choices from Australia, France, NZ or USA. After several days I found out there were some other options available (also limited and not top quality) but this was not widely communicated; it seemed they were being kept secret. We had paid for a top-deck deluxe suite but the Scenic practice of mooring alongside their sister ship (Pearl) meant that we could not use our balcony because there was a bedroom of the Pearl very adjacent. We also had to keep the curtains closed whilst using the cabin which was not acceptable for this standard of cruising. I may consider travelling with Scenic again but I will not take another river cruise with them. I need better views from my balcony - and much better wines at this price! Read Less

Best holidays. Ever. By far. I hope my wife will submit her own review but we both enjoyed our Scenic experience very much. Scenic exceeded our expectations in so many different ways. Everything was top notch, but especially the people. They'd never save an effort to go the extra mile to please us. My wife was a bit picky with the food, so the waiters at Crystal Dining made it their point to always make her happy. They would bring her some delicious berries, some fruits and vegetables she might have just mentioned... Simply amazing. As for myself, I am not new to 5* experiences in different parts of the world but this was something special indeed. The food and the wine were invariably delicious, but there were also those small nice touches, like when you come from a lengthy excursion and on entering the ship you see the crew members offering you a hot towel and a refreshing drink. As soon as we'll have time for our next holidays, we'll be enjoying them with Scenic again, that's for sure. Read Less

My husband and I have nothing but praise for this ship and her crew and Scenic in general. From the moment we boarded our 'spaceship' we were treated like royalty. We had a balcony cabin port side on the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise that was spacious and comfortable, with a bed you melted into at the end of an adventure filled day. The bathroom was very roomy and the water pressure and temperature were wonderful. All tours, drinks, food and entertainment were included so you didn't have to put your hand in your pocket - unless you wanted to buy something to take home. It was great to know that everything was paid for before we left Australia. The food was plentiful, delicious and varied, it changed from region to region - as we did, along with the wines. Wonderful new wines every day. So much food! "It must be time to eat." The staff were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble. Very friendly and funny - even at midnight when my husband wanted a cheeseburger and a glass of red. The ports of call were wonderful for someone who hasn't been to that part of Europe before. Easy to do, lots of walking on cobly streets but flat. Such history! It was magnificent. There were many shore excursions to choose from or you could just stay on board and do nothing in a quiet corner. Something for everyone. We made some wonderful new friends that we will keep in touch with. The age group was extremely varied from 20 somethings to 80 somethings. NOT full of old people. We were on the first tour of the season and I must admit it was better than going in high summer or later. No leaves on the trees meant you could see a lot more as you cruised the river. Another couple of weeks and all you will see is trees! Less people, no queues or crowds at any of the venues. Bliss. We have already booked our next Scenic trip. We had cruised at sea many times over the years with a variety of high-end lines. More recently, we have been exploring Europe and we took two Viking cruises last year. These are very good products and we enjoyed them very much. They are advertised as all-inclusive, but they are not really, as you have to pay for drinks other than lunch and dinner, and you have to tip, which I hate with a passion. We were attracted to Scenic's advertising and booked a week's tour up the Rhine from Amsterdam. We returned two days ago, with a general view that Scenic is a clear winner over Viking in every way. The environment in the public areas is cleanly detailed in a modern style, with huge areas of glass. This is carried through to the circulation spaces, most of which are lined with white glass. Bars are completely open and well stocked. The wine list is substantial, though cruising through German waters revealed a number of unfamiliar wines to try. Food is very good in the main restaurant and better in the 'La Rive', which is fronted as a gourmand experience and can only be use once a week. I didn't like the menu for the other special restaurant (Portobello), so we didn't eat there. Excursions were enriching and excellent and for the most part, Scenic used their own fleet of buses to shadow the ship as it passed along the river so that they were available at ecah town if needed. Entertainment included soloists for Zither and Violin, and a German wit who 'taught' us all some German. Some electric bikes are available too, but I didn't see them used much. Tipping is banned, both aboard and on tours and busses. In fact the Cruise director asked to be informed if anyone tried to solicit a tip. I think this has to do with the company being Australian. In fact, the majority of passengers were Australian, with a moderate contingent from UK and a few from USA Read Less

Scenic Opal is a new ship (built in 2015) and it showed. Our cabin was very smart as were the Public Rooms. Everything was provided, bathrobes, slippers, large umbrella, hiking poles. All the staff were great. The cabin was serviced promptly, the butler brought our morning drinks on time and the waiters were attentive in the restaurants and bar. The trips in the ports were well organised and interesting with the cruise director giving a 15 minute talk each night on the next days options. The Tailormade devices were very useful on escorted and non escorted tours. The food was excellent with a good choice and standbys if you didn't like the menu. The wines, beer and spirits were high quality and readily available 24 hours with the minibar in cabin if needed. Dress was relaxed, smart casual no ties. The bulk of the passengers were Australian which gave a nice atmosphere. Two small negatives. Our cabin (C234) was at the stern and suffered from engine noise on several nights while we were trying to sleep. The dinner portions were small (we had afternoon tea from the River Café in the lounge to fill us up, so its not a big problem). Expensive but great value . Read Less

The staff were first class, nothing being to much trouble. Patric, our butler for the duration of the cruise couldn't have been more helpful. The entire staff deserve a pat on the back as does the cruise director who kept everyone informed on a daily basis as to upcoming events. The food was a standout, with fantastic dining, unbelievable. The choice of excursions covered many and varied aspects of European life and attractions. Disembarkation was smooth (although we did not want to leave, having been thoroughly spoilt ). I chose this cruise because of the reputation of Scenic, the cruises available at the time of the year that I wanted to go & most importantly because they were prepared to waive the single supplement cost as October is a slightly quieter time of the year. Without that option, it would have been out of my price range. The fly free option was awesome too. From the moment I walked onto the ship (Scenic Opal), to the moment I got off the ship nothing was too much to ask. The off board activities were very professionally organised. The butlers, cabin attendants, waiter / waitresses, bar people were absolutely first class. It was refreshing to see their smiling, happy faces each day. They quite obviously love their jobs. My biggest praise is to Chef Walter & his team of chefs for their awesome food. My allergy to garlic was taken very seriously. Each morning I received a menu which showed what food contained garlic highlighted in red, so that I knew what to avoid. Which meant I had absolutely no food issues whatsoever. I think that the best off ship activity was Shopping with the Chef (Walter) in Vienna. The food market was great & the variety of foods available were unbelievable. Quite un-touristy place to visit, but excellent. Read Less

Our cruise consisted of 14 nights cruising from Budapest to Amsterdam with three days at either end in Prague and Paris. We chose this cruise because Scenic was recommended to us by quite a few people. The fact that everything is included appealed to us. The timing of the cruise enabled us to get business class flights for a much cheaper price, otherwise we may have chosen to cruise in warmer weather. However, the cold weather and quite a few rainy days didn't detract from our experience. We found the ship to be most comfortable with adequate room to relax without being surrounded by people all the time. The cabins were well appointed with quality bedding, toiletries and storage space. The balcony was wonderful to enjoy some time out with a glass of wine. We found all of the staff very helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. If anyone found fault with the food provided, they would be hard to please. It was varied, plentiful (maybe too plentiful judging by my shrunken clothing) and of good quality. I took a galley tour towards the end of the cruise and was amazed at what the kitchen staff could accomplish in such a confined area. Day excursions were for the most part well organised and of good quality. My only wish is that maybe some of the walking tours were shorter and had less of the history (which I couldn't retain anyway) and more time to explore areas in our own time. I sometimes felt that we spent too much in some places and not enough in others. I understand though that in 14 days you can really only get a glimpse of so many cities and towns. Overall, I would certainly recommend and travel with Scenic again. Being a luxury cruise I particularly enjoyed the concept of unpacking only once and having your every need taken care of. A wonderful experience! Read Less
