After a very positive experience on the Seine with Scenic, this cruise was an easy choice. Traveling with a small group, we were able to enjoy the company of our friends, and of many other new friends. I would identify the passengers on the Opal as fairly young group, and the staff embraced, and encouraged, our wish to have fun on the ship, as well as off. As previously experienced, our excursions with Scenic were interesting, and well guided. The outings were perhaps a bit short, part day tours, due to a need for the Opal to cover the distance to the next stop. This is not a criticism of the cruise, but a characteristic of this cruise. The crew were vey capable of ensuring the time spent on the Opal passed quickly. The food and the ship were excellent, as we now expect with Scenic. Our balcony was perhaps underutilized, but that relates to the fall weather, and meeting our group in the lounge, or dining room, instead of watching the sights as a couple from our balcony. Enough cannot be said about the staff on the ship. I believe every Scenic ship is well designed and appointed, but the effort and care of the Opal staff ensured this cruise has established a very high standard for our Scenic cruises that are likely to follow. A few days were well spent in Amsterdam before the cruise, to adjust to the time change and enjoy Dutch culture. Touring in and around around Zurich after the cruise is expensive, but wound out the trip nicely. Read Less

Cruise was all-inclusive including all drinks and tours, everything, did not spend any money during the cruise week. 20 of us went so an all-inclusive was the way to go. Rooms super clean and luxurious, service, food, entertainment fabulous. In room bar. We had a balcony. No reserved dining times which we liked as we could go when we wanted to. Staff very friendly and attentive. Cruise went from Amsterdam to Basel. Good choice with tours. Can hardly wait to go again. I believe you have to be at least 18 but average age was 70-75. Our group was around 60 yrs. Dancing in lounge every night. We were in Europe about 2 extra weeks and toured Paris, Belgium and Switzerland. Easy to meet other people. Weather was somewhat cool so we didn't utilize the sun deck as much as we would have liked. But did use the hot tub/infinity pool. This cruise exceeded my expectations. I had no complaints at all. We wanted this cruise to visit a part of Europe not yet seen. Scenic offered such an all inclusive cruise choice we felt it was the one to try. The itinerary to was great.,we saw so many beautiful castles and half timber towns it was amazing. Our cabin was well appointed and we love our sunroom balcony which was lovely to sit on,warm and cozy as we floated along. The rest of the cabin was well planned and had lots of storage for both of us. Food was excellent. So varied and well prepared. Especially considering the petit galley they were working from. Wine selection as well offered all of our friends their particular favourites. The staff on the ship was well trained and attentive. Things asked for would appear in short order always with a smile . We had lots of fun with several staff who had fun senses of humour and we looked forward to seeing during our days. Shore excursions were also nclud d and offered many choice see as we moved along. My husband and fri nds especiaal enjoy d their bike ride on the electric bikes. Entertaining intervals were a glimps of the local talent Germany has in abundance. We enjoyed several evenings as well as a couple of afternoons in the lovely lounge. I hope I haven't missed anything. I did save the best for last. Our cruise director Richard Grey was without a doubt the most outstanding part of our trip. He was not only the most organized fellow ,but the most entertaining. He made our cruise the best time ever. Read Less

We experienced our first river cruise two years ago on a 7 day Scenic River Cruise 0n the Danube. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to go on another 7 day excursion Scenic river cruise on the Rhine, and this time with a few family members. The service and the attention to details was exceptional. Everything was included in the price of the cruise. Food was exquisite and all you could eat. Ports and shore excursions were planned to the T with no issues. There was local entertainment every evening in the bar area which was enjoyable. Also included was an evening out to a concert just for the cruise members in Strasbourg, France. The ship was easy to get around and the sun deck was great for gathering and enjoying the scenery when cruising. There is an elevator for access to all decks except for the sun deck. Plan to do another Scenic river cruise in the future. Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We spent 2 days in Amsterdam, which we thoroughly enjoyed, before connecting with the river cruise. Our cabin was excellent (junior balcony) and was spacious for a cabin, especially the bathroom. The lounge and dining room were beautiful, and because the weather was so nice, we spent quite a bit of time on deck. Our crew could not have better and the food and entertainment were wonderful. If I am permitted, I would especially like to thank three staff who stood out: Costi, who looked after the dining room, Margaret who served our drinks, and of course Kurt, the cruise director. We especially enjoyed the excursions. Our only regret was that we wish we could have had more free time to explore the places on our own after the guided tour, but we realize that schedules could not allow this. The cruise exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely do it again. While this was our first river cruise, so I have nothing to compare, we felt we were totally looked after from the time we left our home to when we returned. I also very much appreciate that this cruise was totally all inclusive. Read Less

We had lots to celebrate this year and decided to do our "bucket-list" trip . . . a European river cruise. Scenic was recommended to us by our travel agent. We went into the trip with high expectations, and I can honestly say that all our expectations were exceeded! The ship was beautiful. Being only two years old, it was shiny new and pretty. The staff in every area were all top-notch (cruise director Kurt was exceptional); the food and beverages were excellent; every excursion was fantastic! We enjoyed every single minute of the cruise. It was well-organized, relaxed, and a lot of fun. Scenic paid attention to every detail and we felt really well looked-after. The transfers were smooth and seamless. Embarkation and Disembarkation were organized and pleasant. The guides on all of our excursions were very knowledgeable and very passionate about their city. The pace of the excursions was perfect. Entertainment was varied and very enjoyable.Fellow travellers were all very friendly. One of the highlights for us was cruising down the Rhine gorge on a beautiful sunny, warm afternoon and seeing mile after mile of castles, vineyards, and churches. We felt like we were in a storybook! Read Less

We were interested in learning about Holland, Germany and Switzerland and discovering what a river cruise was like -- the best and most relaxing of all the cruises we have taken! Our meals were fantastic, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoyed having dinner entertainment. Margaret and Gigi looked after us with our favourite alcoholic drinks during our meals and on the sundeck as well as the lounge. Costin, the head of food service, always made sure that our meals were what we expected and were always available. Kurt, the cruise director, was fantastic and did a super job of making sure everything was going smoothly and made Harley laugh like crazy during the "German class" and as a result, Harley has signed up for conversational German to start Sept. 18! The tour guides for the canals of Amsterdam and the bus tour were exceptional. The tour guide in Koblenz was knowledgeable and showed us the best of the city with his love of the city and his flair for writing, he made the city come alive. The Mechanical Music Instrument Museum was fascinating and the ride up the side of the mountain on the cable car gave us an overall view of the vineyards as we reached the Niederwald monument at the top. We have no words to describe the experience at the Baroque Palace, complete with drinks and hors d'oeuvres before the classical concert - we were overwhelmed with the beauty of the room and the wonderful performances of the two opera singers and the piano accompaniment. The visit to the Black Forest area was somewhat of a disappointment but Schnapps and the Black Forest Cake made up for it! We found going through the locks fascinating and we were very impressed when our cruise got delayed by a mishap in a lock but we admired the way Kurt managed to rebook everyone at the right times on each bus so that we could catch our flight out of Basel airport. This was our first cruise with Scenic. Their arrangements before, during and after the cruise were excellent. Everything which was under their immediate control worked superbly - Scenic cannot be blamed for the fact that there issues with the locks on the Strasburg to Basle section. The Scenic Opal is a beautifull well appointed ship, the food is very good and the service even better.Cabins are reasonably spacious and certainly way better than just adequate. The organised trips were extremely well guided with knowledgeable local guides who were well versed in their subjects and, because they were obviously experienced, made their guides both informative and entertaining. Talking of entertaining, the varied programme of evening entertainment in the ship's lounge was really good. In fairness, it is not a cruise which is suitable for children - it is definitely tailored for adults but even those who were more advanced in years than others coped with the tours very well. Not a cheap cruise but, as Scenic advertise, EVERYTHING is included - no surcharges for anything! Would have no hesitation in going with Scenic again. Read Less

We went with two other couples and one of the other couples decided this was the best cruise to go on. Scenic was recommended as the best all inclusive cruise line. The ship was beautiful, the food amazing, the entertainment great. Our cruise director Kurt was unbelievable. All the crew were very polite, bent over to help you, very funny. Had a great time with them. Definitely would use Scenic again. It was a experience of a lifetime. The scenery was amazing. Tours where great. Having everything set up for you with a daily schedule was great. Having an all inclusive cruise is the best way to go. Get you eat and drink as much as you want with everything included. Only had to have money to do shopping while on shore. All tour guides were great and very knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend going on a Scenic cruise. You will not regret it. This trip was recommended by our travel agent as it fit into a meeting that I attended in Basel. All aspects of the trip were delightful - it was busy however with daily excursions. We were blessed with good weather for most of the trip. The staff and especially the cruise director made the trip fantastic. The ship captain and crew lended to feeling of security and safety. The fellow travelers were for the most part compatible and easy to make friends. There were ample opportunities for excursions and often two or three choices at each port. There was a large bicycling group aboard that had their own agenda and apparently had a very nice experience. Three gourmet meals a day, including lamb chops for breakfast. The separate dinners were enjoyable, and the dining crew made us feel as family. There were no children on the ship and this was most appreciated in that river boats are not large and capable of entertaining youth! Read Less

New experience having never done a river cruise before. The Rhine was lovely and everything about the ship was wonderful. The only thing I didn't like was getting up reasonably early every morning to go on a trip. Having said that we did see a lot of lovely places. All the crew were excellent and very friendly. The on- shore trips were well organised and everything went to time. The special private concert we went to see was a new experience and most enjoyable. Would like to have seen a few more of the passengers making more of an effort to dress up a little more formal for such a special event. Our flight to Basel was only slightly delayed and because it was an afternoon departure from Bristol we only just made the ship in time before it left at 17.00hrs so maybe an earlier flight would have been better. We did not see anything of Basal. Read Less

Loved my trip on the Rhine highlights tour... from beginning to end...we had such a good time and were sad to leave at the end of the week on board the Opal. The staff were superb, food and drinks plentiful, itinerary good, only critisim would be the early starts for the trips. The trips were informative and well conducted. The staff were fantastic and had an excellent rapore with their guests. The cruise director a great tonic and a real character with his matching shoes and ties. The captain of the ship was approachable and encouraged people to visit him on deck. The deck was pretty and the hot tub fabulous. The electric bikes and hand held devices were both an additional bonus to the trip. I would have no hesitation in recommending this cruise to any fellow travellers. One of the best experiences ever. The cabin, food, cruise director, Richard, and the entire staff went above and beyond to make sure we were constantly taken care of. The chef was very friendly, experienced and a great chef. He provided several options at every meal, and made sure we had a taste of every region we visited. The bar staff went above and beyond to make sure there was always a drink available. We can't compliment the staff enough, from the housekeepers to the skipper. Adding the four extra days in Switzerland was definately the highlight of the trip. First class hotels, tours and meals were excellent. All tours and activities were thorough and there was time everyday to have on your own. This was our 3rd trip on Scenic and we will continue to stay with them as the service is impeccable and the inclusive theme is wonderful. The food is varied with something for every taste & great wine selections as we traveled down the river. All of the excursions were well thought out and as they are early in the day you get to miss the rush of tourists and then spend the rest of the day either floating down the river or exploring a town on your own (using the tailor made device that gives you information about where you are). The cruise director kept it lively and all activities went on without a hitch- including the first and last days. If you want a vacation the takes you away, mixes you with interesting travelers in a small number, I would definitely recommend river cruising in general and this company's fleet in particular. Our butler, Alex, was wonderful and anticipated our every wish. The shore excursions were top rate. The destinations were beautiful and historic. Food and beverage were excellent and the service was also terrific! I highly recommend doing this cruise with friends. Embarkation was SO easy. 15 Days of Unabated Luxury Why Chose Scenic? My wife and I booked the 15-day “Romantic Rhine & Moselle” cruise with Scenic departing Amsterdam for Basle (Switzerland), leaving the UK on 19th July 2017, which coincided with my 70th birthday. We have enjoyed more than 40 ocean cruises, including: Regent, Seaborne, Silversea, Hebridean International and Sea Dream. This was our first taste of River Cruising. We chose Scenic because we wanted an all-inclusive luxury cruise on the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The reviews and UTube videos on Scenic were just excellent - and we wanted to avoid the stress of air travel in favour of rail. We were not disappointed. From Home to Scenic Opal & Return. We were collected by car (operated by Trident) from our home and driven to the Renaissance Hotel St Pancras, where we had booked an overnight stay in one of their “Chamber” suites. This offer, (not booked through Scenic) included a VIP transfer to our Eurostar Coach with fast track through immigration and security without having to lift a bag. A change of trains at Brussels on a Thalys train to Schiphol (with food and drinks!) was straightforward and were met by a local Scenic driver on arrival for a quick transfer to Scenic Opal. The next time we saw our bags was in our (BA) Balcony Suite. We received a very warm welcome and were shown to our suite following a welcome glass of bubbly. Our Butler, Gabriel, introduced himself and showed us around out suite and explained the room facilities. The return journey was equally painless with just a change of station from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord Eurostar and home by limousine from St Pancras. All very painless. The Staff, Bar and Meals. Our housekeeping lady was Milanka from Serbia who gave us outstanding service throughout the cruise. All the crew were from Europe, mainly the Former Yugoslavia with some from Poland, Hungary and Portugal. Only 8 crew were “Nautical Crew” with the remaining 50 or so being hotel staff. Bar service was excellent with a large variety of cocktails available in the extensive bar menu. Bar service was swift, friendly and attentive. The food on board was varied and could not have been better with 14 chefs operating in such a small kitchen/galley. Service in the main restaurant, River Cafe and Portobello’s was swift and friendly for all meals. Breakfast and lunch mainly comprised a huge buffet selection with some options provided from the kitchen. The Captain and Chief Engineer both provided briefings during the cruise. Entertainment & Tours. All the briefings and entertainment were organized and introduced by Richard, the Cruise Director with the following day’s programme being briefed the previous evening. Because of hearing difficulties, we chose not to use the “Tailor Made” GPS devices, which were made available to all guests. Every lunchtime and throughout the evening music was provided by Antonio who has a great voice, large repertoire and plays the piano and guitar. In addition, several other excellent entertainment acts we brought onboard, including a disco, classical trio, musical show time group and fantastic bell-ringers. All the tours we took advantage of were very well organized and included some of the very best guides we have experienced. The tour of Koblenz was outstanding and included a cable car ride to a hilltop fortress followed by German accordion and singing with wine and refreshments. We voted Richard the very best Cruise Director we have seen. Onboard Facilities. If you want to remain on the ship then the vitality pool (heated to body temperature and with bubbles) is excellent with lots of sun deck space available if you want to sit and relax and watch the other vessels pass by. Coffee, tea, ice creams and snacks are available throughout the day together with a full bar and room service. There is also a small library onboard. Conclusion. We tried very hard to find fault with Scenic; we failed. This was the best holiday we have enjoyed for many years. We are about to book with Scenic for another river cruise next year. Read Less

Chosen because of the itinerary and length of the cruise. We have travelled with Scenic before and were entirely satisfied with our previous experience. We were pleased to be offered the opportunity to travel from a local airport and were delighted with the convenience of this on both outward and return flights. Other river trips we have had in the past were of inferior quality. We were very pleased with the space and quality of facilities in the cabin. Our one reservation was the standard of the evening meal which we felt fell below the standard of the lunches. On several occasions we complained at the coolness of the served meals. Excursions were generally very good with good guides. We noted that the mobile headsets provided for the excursions are now very clumsy compared to designs used by other companies. We regret that we will probably not be travelling with Scenic again because we have now completed our European river trip desires and do not wish to experience long distance ocean cruises. Read Less

Altho there is a lift the stairs are shallow and easy to use. Even up to the top deck, which the lift does not reach, he was fine as there are good rails to hold on to either side. Everything is included in the price - meals, snacks, anytime any type of drink, excursions, tips, entertainment, room service. The food was of very good quality and never repeated. It was great to have different wines from a variety of regions of Europe. There was a thorough and fun port talk every evening by our superb cruise director Richard Grey (altho personally we would have liked more detailed advance information). Have done over 25 Ocean cruises from large to small. This was first river cruise. Although Scenic has been around for over 25 years, they have only been marketing in US for a few years. Picked Scenic based on independent ratings on line, as this was highest rated as of 2016. Was not disappointed. While I have seen many lines market as pretty much all-inclusive, this is the real deal. Based on value, this was the best I have ever experienced. With the exception of some free time expenses on land and river portions, I never reached for my credit card or wallet. The only extra on board was for some laundry service. Tips included, all food and drinks (including alcohol) included, all excursions included. Beautiful ship. Great service. If you want to be surrounded by Americans, may not be the best choice for you. This is an Australian company and vast majority of our ship mates were Aussies, Kiwis, Brits and Canadians.....the friendliest and most fun people in the world. Also, gauge your dining expectations based on the small size of kitchen facilities on a river boat. Food was more than acceptable and was not gourmet level. If you are a foodie, stick to upscale ocean cruises. Individual GPS system allows easy listening on guided tours, create your own tour on every stop, sitting on your balcony and having every point of interest pointed out as you sail by. Read Less

I heard so many glowing reports of scenic, I had high expectations...they were exceeded. There were four of us (2 couples) travelling together We were on Scenic Opal on the Jewel deck, down at water level. It was fabulous, plenty of space, eye level window, great view of the scenery, but we spent most of our time in the lounge or the front deck or on the top deck, even if we had a balcony cabin we would have been up in the lounge etc so that you can see BOTH sides of the river. The food was wonderful, my friend has many dietary needs was so well looked after she was thrilled. Our cruise director Richard Grey was BRILLIANT the entertainment on board, the excursions, guides and staff were second to none. Budapest to Amsterdam was the BEST way to go. Loved it. Well done SCENIC I marked Embarkation down one point because: One thing could be improved is information on arrival. In the 'Welcome' book it stated we were to transfer to the ship from the front of our hotel at 11am and it also stated 'Embarkation at the ship starts no earlier than 3pm" This caused some confusion. Guessing we would be at the ship by 11:30, were we to stand around for 3 and a half hours before getting on? did we drop our luggage there and go sightseeing for a couple of hours? No it all went very smoothly the coach picked us up, took us along the river to the ship, we went on board to a lovely welcome with snacks and drinks available immediately, while we waited to be shown to our rooms, so maybe the written word of the 'Welcome' could be changed to show that you go to the lounge whilst waiting. Thanks again for a wonderful experience Read Less

My party and I had 2 days in Budapest before we boarded the ship and added 2 days in Amsterdam at the end of our cruise on the advice of friends who had taken the same cruise. Great suggestion! Embarking and disembarking were both well organized and quick! The Opal is an amazing ship, spotless and well planned out. Dining room, food and staff were exceptional. Chef Norm is a master with food. Our choices each night were hard to choose between. If you tire of the buffet you can choose off the menu anytime. It is not always a buffet if you choose not to. The service from everyone is above and beyond. Entertainment was wonderful, each night Antonio the piano/guitar/singer played songs from all eras. All had such a great time and a lot of dancing ensued most nights. The cruise director Richard Grey brought outside entertainment on ship some nights which had everyone on awe. I cannot say enough about the service from all employees on the Opal, if you needed something, they went above and beyond to get it for you. Nothing was too big or too small, and always with a smile. Ports and shore excursions, I enjoyed all as I am interested in history, however, if you are not up to it or not interested in a certain excursion you can stay on the ship and relax. Your choice! Now for my last yahoo! Our cruise director Richard Grey was the most extraordinary person. He made our cruising so seamless, all excursions on time and fun. If you needed info on anything he would get it for you. Always there with a smile and hello, he remembers many names of passengers, information on the cities we visit, the port talks, and even dressed up a couple of nights (oh, I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there) he was hilarious! One last item, the trip may cost a bit more than another cruise line, however, ALL tips, excursions, food and alcohol are included in your price upfront. No bill at the end of the trip unless you use the hairdresser or masseuse. We had private functions for Opal passengers only, which would be an added cost on another cruise line, but not for Scenic passengers! Amazing trip and amazing people. As you can see, I totally enjoyed my trip and would certainly go again on another trip and different route. I highly recommend Scenic Cruise lines! Debra N Read Less

We had a cabin on the top deck ( balcony suite). The suite had everything we needed, everything is so cleverly designed to maximise the space and make everything easily accessible. The crew were fantastic nothing was too much trouble and the service was impeccable as was the quality and presentation of the food. The onboard entertainment is limited but enjoyable - this is not a big ship, 160 or so people, and people get to know each other quickly and tend to chat away whilst enjoying the complimentary drinks. The shore excursions are varied, you usually had 3 to choose from and there was always at least one that suited us. The Scenic Enrich events were great - we went to a local home for a real Bulgarian dinner, it was a great experience! What we most loved was the fact that we never needed money from the moment the driver picked us up from home until he dropped us back home at the end of the tour. If you want to stay in a 5 Star hotel that travels with you then this is definitely the holiday for you. We've booked for another Scenic River Cruise in September to Russia. Read Less

Overall a top drawer experience. Very little to fault. Felt the tour guide in Budapest was a bit difficult to follow at times, but all other guides were professional, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Chef and dining room staff superb. Also a big thank you to the support staff e.g. cabin crew and cleaning staff. The excursions were spot on in terms of local interest. Coach journeys were sometimes a little lengthy, but you can't do anything about the geographical location of the Danube! The evening entertainment was pleasant, and although the pianist/ guitarist was good, sometimes peace and quite is a preferred option (Americans guests are noisy enough). The Tour Director, although sometimes tested to the limit, was calm and professional, and kept the whole excursion running like clockwork, He should be made Chief Executive of Scenic immediately. We will sail with you again, when we have saved up a few pounds. Would 100% recommend Scenic to all our friends. Read Less

I did a full assessment of all the river cruises and Scenic, although amongst the most expensive came out as good value for money as an all-inclusive cruise. Eveything was included. The ship was superb, however the journey there was not at all good. We were supposed to fly from Bristol to Budapest via Brussels. However, our flight was cancelled on the tarmac, we were transferred to Heathrow via taxi, then had more delayed flights after that, arriving in Budapest at 2230 rather than 1120 originally. The meals are superb and the butler service for morning tea was great. Meals to mention are the Tasting menu, which complemented seve courses to five wines, and the exclusive la Rive meal. The highlight was the exclusive concert at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna. The music was out of this world and the setting magnificent. Other excursions were to Salzburg, and Melk Abbey. The guides were excellent and the hand held guides worked well. Although we were early in the season all the staff were extremely well trained to a high standard. The fellow passengers were a mixed crowd from UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and we had a great time. We even had a Grand National sweepstake and my horse came third! The shore excursions were all excellent with the personal guide being very good. Would I go again? Definitely Read Less
