We had a fabulous rive cruise just before Christmas with Avalon. We started in Zurich, Switzerland which was beautiful. We enjoyed spending 2 days touring Zurich before we got on the riverboat in Basil. The riverboat was fabulous. The staterooms have been redone and are so much more comfortable with the bed facing the outside and the nice sofa and chair. We loved all of our stops in France and Germany to see the towns and visit the Christmas markets. Christmas decorations were everywhere and you felt like you were in fairyland We enjoyed the onboard entertainment. The food on the boat and on the land was superb. We ended by being bused to Prague which is a gorgeous city. We spend 2 extra nights there as there is so much to see. This was the very best river cruise that we have ever been on. Avalon does an incredible job!!!! Read Less

After talking about taking a cruise for years, my wife and I finally booked this one -- Christmas on the Rhine. We traveled through the beautiful Alsace region, on a luxurious boat with amazing food. We were greeted at the airport by a friendly shuttle driver and taken to a central location where other cruisers were waiting. Together we boarded a bus that took us directly to the boat. A few minutes later and we were in our room! We were both blown away by the quality of the room and facilities. There was time for a quick shower and then we headed to the welcome meeting where we learned the rules of the trip. We enjoyed going up above deck and passing through a lock. Looking out over this beautiful, ancient river and watching Europe glide by in the moonlight. It was a special time! Our tour director, Vlad, did a phenomenal job managing all of the tour arrangements and we enjoyed each one of our unique local guides. We learned so much more than doing our more normal trip of going, renting a car and driving around! The shore excursions/tours were the highlight for us, but I don't want to take anything away from the boat, the crew, or the kitchen and dining staff. We were treated incredibly well by everyone, and the food never left anything to be desired. We'll be on one again before long, I suspect! Read Less

From the planning stage to the end of the cruise this has been a great experience. Planning was a breeze on the website and staff was very helpful when we had questions or needed to make changes. My husband has lived abroad in the past but this was my first trip to Europe. And what a way to be introduced! We scheduled extra days before and after the cruise so we spent those days in the Movenpick hotels - very nice! Very well organized at the hotel for travel to embarkation port. Once we arrived at the ship, everyone was well organized and had our luggage to our rooms very quickly and in good order. The ship was beautiful, clean, and well appointed in every way. Our cabin was wonderful - very modern and up to date - granite countertops in the bath area and the L'Occitane toiletries were so nice. The staff could not have been more helpful - they were all friendly, courteous, and polite. The dining was excellent - so many choices and such good food!! Every meal was fresh and delicious. There were always some little tidbits out if you wanted a snack as well as coffee, tea, or juice. And don't forget tea time - oh my goodness - try not to miss afternoon tea. We did eat off of the ship a couple of times and also brought back some sweets from several bakeries - that was also a feast for the taste buds! Don't miss some of the local bakeries - you will be truly sorry if you do. The on board entertainment was well worth the time in the evening if you are not out wandering the streets of some of the quaintest little cities in the country. The evening meetings with our cruise director, Tony, were very informative but also a lot of fun. He was so helpful when we had questions about excursions or what to do and see in our spare time. And speaking of excursions - there were quite a few choices and it was very hard to make a decision when it came time to sign up. Once we hit port we were off and running with our guides! Every guide that we had was very knowledgeable of the local history and fun things do. They were also very personable and pleasant to spend time with. When we had spare time they were able to give us pointers on some places to see and how to get there. The history, the shopping, the people were amazing and the fall colors in the countryside were just breathtaking. The rivers, mountains, industry, museums, castles, churches and cathedrals are so beautiful and full of history - how can you go wrong with a trip like this?! Leaving was really a sad day - had to say goodbye to new friends and great crew! All was so organized and went so smoothly - I was amazed at the ease of departure - they arranged for shuttle to our hotel even though it was just a short distance away. It was raining that morning so I was thankful for the ride. It was such a great trip - I would do it again tomorrow!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted our first time in Europe to be a unique experience. We really enjoyed the overall cruise atmosphere. The walking tours were enlightening and allowed us time to do other things too. The ship was very comfortable and it was nice to get to know new friends. The crew members were very polite and helpful in many ways. The ship was easy to navigate and the ride on the river was very smooth. The cabin was plenty roomy and the bed comfortable. Dining was very enjoyable as we were able to connect with new friends and enjoy some great food. I especially enjoyed some of the local cuisine. The scenery was amazing. I especially liked the many castles that were located on both sides of the Rhine River. The people we met in each port along the way were friendly and glad to see us. The cathedrals were spectacular. One of the best excursions was the trip to the museum where automated musical instruments had been reconditioned to perform as they were originally intended. Read Less

First river cruise -- wanted to see Rhine. Was extremely pleased with attentive and pleasant staff, the calm and leisurely schedule and the absence of rushing crowds. We have done 14 ocean cruises and plan to do more on the rivers. It came down to a choice between Viking and Avalon and we are very happy with our final selection and will try Avalon again. This was a surprise 48th wedding anniversary present to wife.We truly enjoyed the shore excursions -- particularly in Strasbourg and Cologne at the cathedrals. Was also pleased with Cruise Director's daily briefing and great information. The ship was very nice and atmosphere was comfortable and casual. The dining experience was excellent at every meal. The complimentary selections of regional wines were also a very nice addition to cruise. We did come home to Colorado with many wonderful memories, lots of pictures and a terrific cuckoo clock from the Black Forest. Thanks.. Read Less

It was a last minute booking and not what we had initially set out to book but was excellent. The staff were really good, friendly and attentive. The cruise director Christine was incredibly knowledgeable and keen to make sure everyone got the best from their trip. The organisation was faultless and shore guides so informative - they had excellent English, their own individual style and were just superb. The food on board is plentiful - buffet breakfast and lunch and then 4-course dinner - usually with regional specialities. The wine served at meals was of a high standard. There is also the opportunity for 16 guests each evening to try a bistro dinner served in the front of the lounge so you can maximise your river viewing. The menu is a taster menu, geared around fine dining bites so quite different from the main dining room. Afternoon tea and cake was a nice touch - even though the calories were not needed! Entertainment is mainly piano based in the lounge but there was an accordion player brought on board on one occasion at lunchtime and an excellent string trio on another evening. There is a good balance of organised tours and free time to do your own thing if you wish and we appreciated that - we like some down time to explore ashore. There is not one thing I could fault (other than perhaps some damp weather) and we would love to return! Read Less

Went on Avalon cruise a few years ago and the river was “closed”. We were very disappointed. We were not sure we wanted to try this again. Avalon kindly refunded part of our trip cost. We wanted to try again and give Avalon another chance. So glad we did. We started in Basel and ended the cruise in Amsterdam. Boarding was very prompt and staff could not have been more helpful. Our room was spacious. Food was DELICIOUS. My husband had a birthday while on the cruise and he had a birthday cake with candles presented to him after dinner. Cruise director was very helpful and a lot of fun. We are grateful we met several couples from other countries during our week and had the best time comparing country habits and happenings. The only complaint I would have is the early starts every day. We are not late sleepers but a week of getting up early and eating breakfast before 8:30 am got a little tiring. Have been looking at taking a France trip in the future. Thank you Avalon. Read Less

We had taken a Danube Avalon cruise in July of 2016 with Avalon. Enjoyed it so much we decided to do the Rhine in 2017. In 2016 the ship only had approximately 80 passengers on board with crew. This summer the ship was completely full. Just with difference of 35-40 people you could tell the difference in the service level at dinnertime, Both cruises had wonderful, attentive and informative cruise directors. Each director had very different personalities, but catered to our every whim! Very knowledgeable with very good sense of humor! The crew did a wonderful job as well. Each one was very friendly and accomodating. The food was very good, as well as the bar service. We paid for optional tours on each cruise and they only added to our wonderful experience. The local guides do a wonderful job and take good care to watch over everyone. The earpieces are such a good idea! I did like the new addition this summer of having a "slow walking tour" option for those that needed it. I think that was very helpful for alot of passengers. Read Less

While everything with Avalon Cruises are top notch, be prepared for non-stop activity and not getting much rest and relaxation on this cruise. It was still a blast, however we would have liked to go on our own and explore the cities by ourselves. Not in all cases, but in most. That would have required more research and planning on our parts, and we just didn't do it. We did see cities where we would like to go back to explore more. Be prepared to eat a lot, that is what also keeps you very busy on this cruise. You get bused out to an excursion after breakfast then get bused back in for lunch, and these are very big meals. They do give lighter options, but I'd rather stay in the city for lunch, see a museum, shop or explore. I'm giving this advice so you realize you have choices or just go along and not do much thinking/planning. My husband and I love to get full immersion into the different cities and cultures, that is true traveling to us. This was our first cruise, and it was an experience of a lifetime. Great food, entertainment, wonderful service and living quarters and we made some great friendships. One can only see so many cathedrals before they all start looking alike. Would rather have viewed small art museums or had lunch at a cafe. The best part was the 4 hour bike rides through the country and small towns then stopping for pie at the local pub. Visiting a local winery and hearing first hand from the owner/operator was a great time also. Sure we would travel with Avalon again, however would put much more thought into it as far as personal experiences to explore on our own. Read Less

The staff on board the ship were all extremely courteous and friendly. The ship was spotless and well organized. Every request was met with kindness and efficiency. The food selection was wonderful, with plenty of variety, and accommodated special dietary needs. Our stateroom contained a fridge which met medication needs. Each request at every meal was fulfilled quickly and easily. Our cruise director was very informative and personable. Our waiter in particular was amazing - friendly and catered to us personally. We particularly were grateful for the quiet lounge at the rear of the ship where tea, coffee, fresh juice, cookies and pastry were always available twenty-four-seven. Embarkation and disembarkation were always easy and quickly managed. Tours were well organized and hosted by very knowledgeable tour guides and clean, efficient motor coaches. While we did not travel with children, there were a handful aboard and activities available for them. We would highly recommend Avalon Waterways to anyone looking for a taste of Europe. Read Less

After sailing on the Siene on Avalon Creativity we couldn't wait to get back on board. The staff again, from the captain down were friendly and helpful, even Ingrid on reception printed off our boarding cards for our return journey home. The excursions and guides are very good and well organised by the Cruise Director. Excursions start around 8.30am returning for lunch at 12 noon, again afternoon excursions start at 1.15/1.30pm and can return anytime up to 6pm, or depending on what time the ship is sailing that evening. We found that a late return meant a bit of a rush to get ready for dinner at 7pm, as every night Monica, the Cruise Director, gave a talk each evening about the next day at 6.45pm. There is a happy hour each day when most guests take advantage of this, as drinks can be quite pricey. Meals on board were very good and wine was readily topped up at both lunch and dinner. Entertainment is a guy playing an electric organ; we did have a woodcarver giving a demonstration one night and also a trio playing. There is a small lounge at the back of the ship where you can get tea/coffee, muffins and biscuits 24/7. Read Less

Avalon's Tranquility II Cruise on the Rhine River was great. We were on the Southbound Romantic Rhine Cruise with Zurich, Mt Pilatus, and Lake Como.My husband and I arrived a day early before our cruise in Amsterdam. Our Travel agent, Nan, at Avoya Travel was able to get a room for us a day ahead of time in the same hotel that the Avalon Tranquility II Cruise Director was meeting everyone to begin the cruise. Our Travel Agent thought of everything and double checked that everything was as she said it would be. The day we went to the ship, a bus picked us up at the hotel to transfer us to the ship. The crew was on hand to greet us with smiles when we boarded the ship the first time. There was a lovely reception before dinner for all the passengers. Dinner was wonderful. The chef presented delicious food every day, and not just standard fare. There were also special dishes representative of the areas we visited. Coffee and tea were available in the main lounge as well as the smaller lounge a the back of the ship, where there were also cookies and pastries available at all times. Wine was served at each meal and often was a specialty of the area we were visiting. There was a continental breakfast available for early birds, a full buffet breakfast with an omelet chef was available at the regular breakfast hour, and a limited breakfast for those who chose to sleep in later. A baby grand piano was played with skill by a pianist in the evenings, and in the evenings there were also musical groups who performed in the lounge, as well as regional presentations such as a demonstration by the Black Forest Woodworker. Tours were available every day and sometimes twice a day depending on the port. You could opt out of the tours if you wished, and just relax onboard. They also had a "gentle walker" group for those who had difficulty walking. The tour guides for each tour had a microphone, so that when you put the provided earbuds on, you had no trouble hearing what was being said. Housekeeping was there bright and early each morning, so that when you went for breakfast, the room was cleaned and ready when you got back. We were on the Saphire deck, and our room had a window the size of the wall, which opened for a wonderful breeze. The bed was very comfortable, and we slept well. They accepted laundry to be cleaned and had it back the next day. We loved the chocolates on the pillows of an evening, and the cute towel animals. There were always two new bottles of water on the table in our room each day. Also when we left the ship to go on a tour, the crew handed out bottled water to take with us. When we returned from a tour, there was a nice cold drink waiting for us when we turned our shore passes in, as well as wet cloth to wash our hands. A hand sanitizer unit was available also when reboarding the ship, and everyone was encouraged to use it. We prepaid gratuities, and it was well worth it, because we didn't have to continually reward the great service we received aboard the ship. The tour guides at each port were very knowledgeable and able to answer questions. An elevator was available for those who needed it, as well as walking sticks for the tours if needed. The cruise director was readily available and encouraged the travelers to come to her if there were any problems. We had no problems. The crew members worked well together to ensure that this was a wonderful experience. The transfer from the ship to Monograms bus at Basel was seamless, and went well for the trip to Mt. Pilatus, Lucerne, Zurich, and Como. Read Less

We loved our first river cruise. Our stateroom was spacious and we loved the comfortable chairs and table overlooking the river as well as the river facing bed. I hadn't expected as much cruising at night but it was fine. We could not fault the hospitality of the crew, the focus on cleanliness whenever we arrived from outside the ship as well as on entering the restaurant. We loved the meals and service and the waiters and waitresses we wonderful and sociable. The meals seemed to be just the right portions and always good quality and we now will always look for a non-buffet style a la carte dinner. We also booked the tasting menu which was excellent (see photos). The quieter venue for this meal made chatting easier. We met some great people and friends on this trip - many from USA and Australia and those from the UK/Scotland in the minority - but for us this was unexpected but great and we really enjoyed the friendliness of everyone. There was a full range of ages on this trip. The excursions were well managed and the cruise director so professional and helpful. We took all the trips included but relaxed at other times and decided not to go on the optional excursions and never felt we were missing out - although always interested in others' experiences. We are still in touch with some of those we met on this trip. The rooms were serviced regularly during the day and towels changed. Everywhere was spotless - I just couldn't fault the boat. Coffee and tea and cakes available 24/7. We found afternoon tea half way through the week and that was the end of our resolve to be healthy - with tempting cakes. The beginning of our trip was colder than normal for July and this was disappointing but it soon improved. I cannot recommend Avalon enough - and to prove this we booked another as soon as we returned home. Read Less

I sailed on Avalon’s Romantic Rhine cruise from Basel to Amsterdam in June 2017. Everything was top notch from start to finish. I was treated like royalty the whole time. The entire crew was phenomenal - from initial check in at the hotel in Zurich to the final drop off at the airport in Amsterdam, everyone was friendly and helpful. The ship was gorgeous and spotless...the common areas and my stateroom. The food was absolutely delicious. I loved the wide variety of options at breakfast and lunch buffets. The dinners were out of this world! Every night was a delicious multi-course journey which highlighted our current location with local food and wine to choose from. I also really enjoyed the open seating and the opportunity to meet new people at every meal. The daily excursions were a lot of fun. I took advantage of all of the included excursions as well as several optional (extra charge) ones. They each gave a great overview of each of our stops, and the local tour guides were both friendly and knowledgeable. I also liked that we had at least a little bit of free time at each stop, so there was always an opportunity to do some shopping or get a snack or beverage. It was also great to be welcomed back to the ship after each excursion by the smiling faces of the crew and a nice, cool drink and a refreshing towel. The staterooms are fantastic, even though I did not spend much time there! The floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall sliding glass door really makes a difference. It was nice to sit and relax by that window either while sitting in port or sailing onto the next stop. Such a unique way to see everything! I am a regular solo traveler and did so on this cruise. It was very easy to travel solo with Avalon. I quickly made some new friends on our first pre-embarkation excursion to Mt Pilatus, and I spent a lot of time with them throughout the cruise. The variety of excursions and the open dining room also make it easy to meet a lot of new friends. I fell in love with Avalon on this, my inaugural river cruise and cannot stop bragging about them to all of my friends and family! I have already booked my next journey with them...the Active Discovery on the Danube in July 2018. I am very much looking forward to traveling in style with Avalon again, and I highly recommend them. This was my first foray into cruising. My friend and I didn't think we would like cruises but I wanted to check it off my bucket list. So we chose a cruise that was relatively short so that we wouldn't be "stuck" doing something that didn't meet expectations. Avalon exceeded all my expectations. We were both extremely pleased with everything about the cruise. The cabin was more than large enough for both of us. The beds were very comfortable. The panoramic window provided an excellent view of the passing scenery. The shore excursions were varied and the local guides were excellent. The food was fabulous. My only complaint was that there was too much of it and it was so good that it was difficult to refrain from eating too much. I stayed in my room and skipped one meal because I knew I couldn't turn anything down. The service was extraordinary. I can't think of one thing that was negative. I am a solo traveller -- I like to be safe and looked after. Avalon knows how to do this in style. The suites are roomy with a lot of storage area and huge floor to ceiling windows. The room is large as they don't have the wasted space of a balcony .. you can open the window wide and that eliminates the need of a balcony. The beds are so very comfortable and the bathroom is roomy. The tours were great -- and the amount of time spent in each port was adequate. There were a couple of stops that I would have appreciated more time -- but there was a schedule the needed to be adhered to. The meals were good -- and if I didn't like something on the menu there was always the standard meals that I could choose. I must admit that I loved the steak and baked potato -- so had that often instead of trying something else! The tour director, Robert, was outstanding. There were a couple of very difficult passengers on board and he handled them very well without disturbing the needs of others. His dry sense of humour made the port talks one of the highlights of the day. The staff of the ship -- be it the cabin stewards or the people behind the scenes were truly some of the best I have experienced. No matter what time of day or what they had been going through -- they were more than happy to assist at any time -- with a smile on their faces. I have tried other river cruise lines -- and always return to Avalon. I believe the quality that they offer is superior to the others I have experienced. Read Less

The food portions were very good, not too large and plenty to eat. Sometimes the food was locally focused and it gave you the opportunity to try something different and other options if you chose not to try something different. The nightly entertainment was good, but repetitive with the same music night after night. We did however have some different entertainers come on the ship 2-4 times during the trip. The weather was cold & gloomy but what do you expect for December in Europe. Wish we could of stayed longer in each village, city we toured just so much to take in. I have been on several of Avalon river boat cruises, a return customer because I find the sevice and activities to be exceptionally great. After breakfast, I turned to pass the waiter my dishes, and he scolded me, "You are on vacation! Let me do that for you". I selected this tour specifically for the Christmas Markets. Yes, it is cold, and the days are shorter, but you quickly warm up back on the ship with warm drinks as you walk back on board. The entertainment was wonderful, and they really engaged the audience, sometimes pulling up passengers to assist in their presentation or show. The tour director was especially helpful to us personally when my husband became ill, finding a doctor in town who spoke english, calling the cab, and checking in on us. Perhaps my favorite reason for taking these cruises is that you port near enough most towns to walk into the town to take in the local scenery. The cold was an excuse to find another cafe to order a wonderful hot chocolate and pastry. Read Less

Avalon waterways is a well oiled machine. There was only one glitch. Prior to the cruise we had prepaid for additional excursions that we went on. Unfortunately this was not communicated with the Tranquility ll cruise director who approached us for payment. I became sick during the second week. This is the best way to see several different places - no packing and unpacking involved The crew work very hard, and cheerfully, to make your week special, the service was excellent and the food was restaurant quality every time. The ship is spacious and the lounge, dining room and bars were all well furnished and comfortable. Going late season we found the shore excursions a pleasure as nowhere were we crowded which was a bonus The standard of service was really excellent and without exception the crew were charming. We go on holiday to be with each other but did enjoy meeting others over dinner. The tours were well run and we really felt we got a feel for each place with local guides. Our tour director was excellent, amusing, helpful and pleasant whilst at the same time letting you get on and enjoy yourself, a credit to the company (thank you Valentin) I would unhesitatingly recommend them and indeed we are already looking at going on another river cruise. We have never cruised before so this was a first for us. We were not keen on the idea of ocean cruising due to the size of vessel, number of passengers & possibility of sea sickness! Our cruise down the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam suited us perfectly. Not too many passengers. A different port every day, sometimes two and a very gentle pace. Always something to see from the window. Ship was immaculate & very well designed. Great attention to detail. Good food, plenty of choice and wine included with dinner. We are usually independent travellers and liked that we were always moored in towns so we could choose do our own thing rather than always take an organised excursion. The excursions we did take were good but we don't like to be too 'organised'. The crew were exceptional. Always cheerful & friendly and so efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. Tour of the bridge was very interesting. The water level was very low when we travelled & we had no interruptions to our itinerary. The captain did a great job of navigating in only 3 feet of water at one point. Embarkation & disembarkation also very well organised. I particularly appreciated the chauffeur service to and from the airport. I didn't have to drive at 5am or pay for airport parking! The whole experience was excellent & we would definitely choose Avalon if we take another river cruise in future. Read Less

Love European river cruising and had traveled with Grand Circle previously on the Danube, Everything was great -- the food, the rooms, the service and passengers. Valentin (Tranquility II, cruise director) was awesome!! He has a way to make everyone feel welcome and special and a great sense of humor. Georgi and Alexandria (Tranquility II, bar service) were also awesome. Always service with a smile, friendly and extremely helpful. Wonderful people. The excursions - both the included and optional excursions were exceptional and the guides were knowledgeable and interesting. Best cruise ever!! Poetry II Great themed cruise -- loved the wine tasting excursions. Each winery/area was unique and I learned soooo much about wine. Petru (Poetry II, dining service) was GREAT!! He makes everyone's day! Would have liked more time at the Pont du Gard excursion -- seemed rushed. Also would have liked more time to discover St. Paul de Vence. Very interesting but dark by the time we arrived. Again, great cruise. Would recommend this to anyone. We look forward to another cruise with Avalon. Read Less
