Great price, great ship reviews, great location to sail for first riverboat cruise. Excellent care by staff, great food, very clean. The excursions were fun and informative. We were very busy each day. Would have enjoyed more corporate activity at night such as dancing, trivia games, karaoke. We are looking forward to traveling with Avalon again. I think it is important to select one of the newer ships based on a conversation with a couple who made the same trip we did the same week on another ship. Their experience was not as positive as ours. Some of our excursions were a little too "touristy" and expensive. I would have preferred a little more free time along with suggestions of things to see. We sometimes felt rushed. Our favorite excursions were Mt Pilates in Zurich and Heidelberg. Also the wine tasting excursion in Alsace. We really liked the canal boat tour in Amsterdam but not much else there. The windmill excursion was very touristy and expensive. However I would definitely recommend this cruise no matter what! Read Less

We chose Avalon for reputation and destinations We liked the fact that we had the option of going on our own at different stops A few standouts were Pesca fis retaurant in Amsterdam and papa Joe’s jazz club. Plan on hopefully another Avalon cruise in the future. Crew and food were exceptional, A few of the excursions were a disappointment - the mechanical music museum and the woman in the museum were terrible. She was mechanical and unappealing. The building actually smelled like musty mold. The wine trip in Alsace was a great disappointment. They only had a few wines to taste (which weren’t very good) and even if we had liked them they didn’t ship. And this was an additional excursion that we paid for. These incidents are reported for your future planning but fortunately and did not affect overall experience of your cruise The coach drivers were all terrific. PS loved the canal boat trips and loved Colmar. But as beautiful as it is was too crowded and might be less so first thing in the mornin. Read Less

We chose Avalon on the advice of our travel agent as she had previous travel with them. We were on the Tranquility II from Amsterdam to Basel. The ship itself was in excellent shape. We had 118 guests with a staff of about 40. All the staff were friendly knowledgeable and and made each of our days enjoyable. The food was varied and we prepared and we were so impressed by their attention to some dietary needs of passengers on the ship. We loved our cabin and our wall of windows. The captain was kind enough to show us his bridge and explain some of the workings of the ship, especially as we went through locks. The on board entertainment , both music and the presentation from the Herr family about the Cuckoo clocks. The organization of the shore excursions was excellent and the tour guides some of the best we have ever had. We traveled as 2 couples. They loved it as well. We would definitely use Avalon again. I always wanted to do a Europe river cruise and I’m so happy we used Avalon. The whole experience was outstanding. From the moment we stepped onto the ship we were treated royally. The staff was very professional and friendly. Our cruise director was always available for questions. I loved that every evening before dinner, we all met in the lounge for drinks and an informational talk from the director on what to expect the next day, reminding us what tours were available and what to expect in the next country or region. The rooms were beautiful and spacious. The floor to ceiling windows/door let you see the breathtaking European countryside as we cruised the beautiful Rhine River. Every tour was exceptional as were the guides. Each excursion would have a knowledgeable tour guide who came from that region and explained so much of the region’s history. Oh yeah, the food was was in abundance and delicious! All the food, wine and beer was from the region we were visiting. The wine and beer was flowing throughout lunch and dinner. We had a phenomenal experience and can’t wait for the next Avalon Cruise! Read Less

We looked at Viking and Avalon. The reviews for Avalon were great and our travel agent gave it a great review. We had a wonderful time. Everything went great. We did have disembark at some ports through other ships but it went smoothly. The food was delish the menus had great selections every evening, and the breakfast and lunch buffets were always full of great selections. We did love the staff the waiters and waitresses and bartenders all were excellent. You couldn't have asked for better service, by the end of our trip we knew we would miss there happy smiles and wonderful attentive service. The cabins were beautiful and always made up and straightened up throughout the day. The Panoramic views from our rooms were spectacular. And not to forget the wonderful excursions. Everyday was filled with interesting venues. All our guides were fantastic. They were locals usually and had personal knowledge of the area. The young woman that coordinated all the excursions was wonderfully helpful with everything. And the welcome desk personnel we also a great help. We had so much fun! It was truly an amazing vacation! The cruise director did a wonderful job, keeping everyone informed and happy. He cared for everyone and made it a point to meet everyone's needs. The excursions were well planned out and organized. The city tours in Germany were very informative with kowledgeable guides that were local people that had a love for their homeland. The food was delightful, always fresh and so very tasty. We had a fabulous rive cruise just before Christmas with Avalon. We started in Zurich, Switzerland which was beautiful. We enjoyed spending 2 days touring Zurich before we got on the riverboat in Basil. The riverboat was fabulous. The staterooms have been redone and are so much more comfortable with the bed facing the outside and the nice sofa and chair. We loved all of our stops in France and Germany to see the towns and visit the Christmas markets. Christmas decorations were everywhere and you felt like you were in fairyland We enjoyed the onboard entertainment. The food on the boat and on the land was superb. We ended by being bused to Prague which is a gorgeous city. We spend 2 extra nights there as there is so much to see. This was the very best river cruise that we have ever been on. After talking about taking a cruise for years, my wife and I finally booked this one -- Christmas on the Rhine. We traveled through the beautiful Alsace region, on a luxurious boat with amazing food. We were greeted at the airport by a friendly shuttle driver and taken to a central location where other cruisers were waiting. Together we boarded a bus that took us directly to the boat. A few minutes later and we were in our room! We were both blown away by the quality of the room and facilities. There was time for a quick shower and then we headed to the welcome meeting where we learned the rules of the trip. We enjoyed going up above deck and passing through a lock. Looking out over this beautiful, ancient river and watching Europe glide by in the moonlight. It was a special time! Our tour director, Vlad, did a phenomenal job managing all of the tour arrangements and we enjoyed each one of our unique local guides. We learned so much more than doing our more normal trip of going, renting a car and driving around! The shore excursions/tours were the highlight for us, but I don't want to take anything away from the boat, the crew, or the kitchen and dining staff. We were treated incredibly well by everyone, and the food never left anything to be desired. We'll be on one again before long, I suspect! Read Less

From the planning stage to the end of the cruise this has been a great experience. Planning was a breeze on the website and staff was very helpful when we had questions or needed to make changes. My husband has lived abroad in the past but this was my first trip to Europe. And what a way to be introduced! We scheduled extra days before and after the cruise so we spent those days in the Movenpick hotels - very nice! Very well organized at the hotel for travel to embarkation port. Once we arrived at the ship, everyone was well organized and had our luggage to our rooms very quickly and in good order. The ship was beautiful, clean, and well appointed in every way. Our cabin was wonderful - very modern and up to date - granite countertops in the bath area and the L'Occitane toiletries were so nice. The staff could not have been more helpful - they were all friendly, courteous, and polite. The dining was excellent - so many choices and such good food!! Every meal was fresh and delicious. There were always some little tidbits out if you wanted a snack as well as coffee, tea, or juice. And don't forget tea time - oh my goodness - try not to miss afternoon tea. We did eat off of the ship a couple of times and also brought back some sweets from several bakeries - that was also a feast for the taste buds! Don't miss some of the local bakeries - you will be truly sorry if you do. The on board entertainment was well worth the time in the evening if you are not out wandering the streets of some of the quaintest little cities in the country. The evening meetings with our cruise director, Tony, were very informative but also a lot of fun. He was so helpful when we had questions about excursions or what to do and see in our spare time. And speaking of excursions - there were quite a few choices and it was very hard to make a decision when it came time to sign up. Once we hit port we were off and running with our guides! Every guide that we had was very knowledgeable of the local history and fun things do. They were also very personable and pleasant to spend time with. When we had spare time they were able to give us pointers on some places to see and how to get there. The history, the shopping, the people were amazing and the fall colors in the countryside were just breathtaking. The rivers, mountains, industry, museums, castles, churches and cathedrals are so beautiful and full of history - how can you go wrong with a trip like this?! Leaving was really a sad day - had to say goodbye to new friends and great crew! All was so organized and went so smoothly - I was amazed at the ease of departure - they arranged for shuttle to our hotel even though it was just a short distance away. It was raining that morning so I was thankful for the ride. It was such a great trip - I would do it again tomorrow!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted our first time in Europe to be a unique experience. We really enjoyed the overall cruise atmosphere. The walking tours were enlightening and allowed us time to do other things too. The ship was very comfortable and it was nice to get to know new friends. The crew members were very polite and helpful in many ways. The ship was easy to navigate and the ride on the river was very smooth. The cabin was plenty roomy and the bed comfortable. Dining was very enjoyable as we were able to connect with new friends and enjoy some great food. I especially enjoyed some of the local cuisine. The scenery was amazing. I especially liked the many castles that were located on both sides of the Rhine River. The people we met in each port along the way were friendly and glad to see us. The cathedrals were spectacular. One of the best excursions was the trip to the museum where automated musical instruments had been reconditioned to perform as they were originally intended. Read Less

Avalon did an outstanding job of making sure we were comfortable and well-fed on the ship. The service was impeccable, and cheerful waitstaff and housekeepers made us feel welcome every day. Food was 5-star....delicious, plentiful, and well-presented. Home-baked goods and desserts were great, and the food was always hot. One complaint was the long bus rides to the excursions. We spent many hours on the bus, which couldn't be avoided, given the itinerary. We also were taken to several "very touristy" locations (wine-tasting, music-box factory, for example.) I would have preferred to have had the time to wander thru the towns or shop. The organizational skills of our tour director, Katy, were phenomenal. Everything seemed to be seamless, including disembarkation. I will go again, but will research the distances between the river and the points of interest. As an aside: late October is very cold and damp in this part of Europe! Read Less

It was a last minute booking and not what we had initially set out to book but was excellent. The staff were really good, friendly and attentive. The cruise director Christine was incredibly knowledgeable and keen to make sure everyone got the best from their trip. The organisation was faultless and shore guides so informative - they had excellent English, their own individual style and were just superb. The food on board is plentiful - buffet breakfast and lunch and then 4-course dinner - usually with regional specialities. The wine served at meals was of a high standard. There is also the opportunity for 16 guests each evening to try a bistro dinner served in the front of the lounge so you can maximise your river viewing. The menu is a taster menu, geared around fine dining bites so quite different from the main dining room. Afternoon tea and cake was a nice touch - even though the calories were not needed! Entertainment is mainly piano based in the lounge but there was an accordion player brought on board on one occasion at lunchtime and an excellent string trio on another evening. There is a good balance of organised tours and free time to do your own thing if you wish and we appreciated that - we like some down time to explore ashore. There is not one thing I could fault (other than perhaps some damp weather) and we would love to return! Read Less

Went on Avalon cruise a few years ago and the river was “closed”. We were very disappointed. We were not sure we wanted to try this again. Avalon kindly refunded part of our trip cost. We wanted to try again and give Avalon another chance. So glad we did. We started in Basel and ended the cruise in Amsterdam. Boarding was very prompt and staff could not have been more helpful. Our room was spacious. Food was DELICIOUS. My husband had a birthday while on the cruise and he had a birthday cake with candles presented to him after dinner. Cruise director was very helpful and a lot of fun. We are grateful we met several couples from other countries during our week and had the best time comparing country habits and happenings. The only complaint I would have is the early starts every day. We are not late sleepers but a week of getting up early and eating breakfast before 8:30 am got a little tiring. We had taken a Danube Avalon cruise in July of 2016 with Avalon. Enjoyed it so much we decided to do the Rhine in 2017. In 2016 the ship only had approximately 80 passengers on board with crew. This summer the ship was completely full. Just with difference of 35-40 people you could tell the difference in the service level at dinnertime, Both cruises had wonderful, attentive and informative cruise directors. Each director had very different personalities, but catered to our every whim! Very knowledgeable with very good sense of humor! The crew did a wonderful job as well. Each one was very friendly and accomodating. The food was very good, as well as the bar service. We paid for optional tours on each cruise and they only added to our wonderful experience. The local guides do a wonderful job and take good care to watch over everyone. The earpieces are such a good idea! I did like the new addition this summer of having a "slow walking tour" option for those that needed it. I think that was very helpful for alot of passengers. Read Less

While everything with Avalon Cruises are top notch, be prepared for non-stop activity and not getting much rest and relaxation on this cruise. It was still a blast, however we would have liked to go on our own and explore the cities by ourselves. Not in all cases, but in most. That would have required more research and planning on our parts, and we just didn't do it. We did see cities where we would like to go back to explore more. Be prepared to eat a lot, that is what also keeps you very busy on this cruise. You get bused out to an excursion after breakfast then get bused back in for lunch, and these are very big meals. They do give lighter options, but I'd rather stay in the city for lunch, see a museum, shop or explore. I'm giving this advice so you realize you have choices or just go along and not do much thinking/planning. My husband and I love to get full immersion into the different cities and cultures, that is true traveling to us. This was our first cruise, and it was an experience of a lifetime. Great food, entertainment, wonderful service and living quarters and we made some great friendships. One can only see so many cathedrals before they all start looking alike. Would rather have viewed small art museums or had lunch at a cafe. The best part was the 4 hour bike rides through the country and small towns then stopping for pie at the local pub. Visiting a local winery and hearing first hand from the owner/operator was a great time also. Sure we would travel with Avalon again, however would put much more thought into it as far as personal experiences to explore on our own. Read Less

My husband and I and another couple sailed on this trip for our anniversaries. Unfortunately my luggage did not make it to our destination. As soon as I arrived on the ship, I advised the cruise director and he immediately started to track it down. Only had the clothes I traveled in but luckily the airline gave me a t-shirt so I could alternate tops until we got to a port where I could shop. I found out later that the ship had shirts that I could purchase. It would have been nice for them to tell me that or give me one. To add to the disappointment of not having my luggage, our friends missed the whole first day of the trip due to the airlines. Avalon was not helpful with getting them to the ship even though they booked the airlines. When they finally arrived in Basel they were to,d they would have to pay the transportation to the ship which was now at the second port. Problems aside, the food, the ship, the crew and the cruise director were wonderful. The ship is beautifully decorated with wood and granite, the bedding is very comfortable and we slept very well. The crew was so much fun, even the captain was fun and friendly. Shout outs to Justas, Petru, Lucia, Nicolette, Madelin, Sorin, Danny, Daniel, Hendrik and more. The tours that were included were fun and informative. There were other tours that you could pay for that were also nice. The entertainment is minimal; piano player/singer at night. One evening we had local entertainment come on board. They were very good. The trip was wonderful. I would not hesitate to do a river cruise again and I would consider Avalon. Read Less

After sailing on the Siene on Avalon Creativity we couldn't wait to get back on board. The staff again, from the captain down were friendly and helpful, even Ingrid on reception printed off our boarding cards for our return journey home. The excursions and guides are very good and well organised by the Cruise Director. Excursions start around 8.30am returning for lunch at 12 noon, again afternoon excursions start at 1.15/1.30pm and can return anytime up to 6pm, or depending on what time the ship is sailing that evening. We found that a late return meant a bit of a rush to get ready for dinner at 7pm, as every night Monica, the Cruise Director, gave a talk each evening about the next day at 6.45pm. There is a happy hour each day when most guests take advantage of this, as drinks can be quite pricey. Meals on board were very good and wine was readily topped up at both lunch and dinner. Entertainment is a guy playing an electric organ; we did have a woodcarver giving a demonstration one night and also a trio playing. There is a small lounge at the back of the ship where you can get tea/coffee, muffins and biscuits 24/7. Read Less

Avalon's Tranquility II Cruise on the Rhine River was great. We were on the Southbound Romantic Rhine Cruise with Zurich, Mt Pilatus, and Lake Como.My husband and I arrived a day early before our cruise in Amsterdam. Our Travel agent, Nan, at Avoya Travel was able to get a room for us a day ahead of time in the same hotel that the Avalon Tranquility II Cruise Director was meeting everyone to begin the cruise. Our Travel Agent thought of everything and double checked that everything was as she said it would be. The day we went to the ship, a bus picked us up at the hotel to transfer us to the ship. The crew was on hand to greet us with smiles when we boarded the ship the first time. There was a lovely reception before dinner for all the passengers. Dinner was wonderful. The chef presented delicious food every day, and not just standard fare. There were also special dishes representative of the areas we visited. Coffee and tea were available in the main lounge as well as the smaller lounge a the back of the ship, where there were also cookies and pastries available at all times. Wine was served at each meal and often was a specialty of the area we were visiting. There was a continental breakfast available for early birds, a full buffet breakfast with an omelet chef was available at the regular breakfast hour, and a limited breakfast for those who chose to sleep in later. A baby grand piano was played with skill by a pianist in the evenings, and in the evenings there were also musical groups who performed in the lounge, as well as regional presentations such as a demonstration by the Black Forest Woodworker. Tours were available every day and sometimes twice a day depending on the port. You could opt out of the tours if you wished, and just relax onboard. They also had a "gentle walker" group for those who had difficulty walking. The tour guides for each tour had a microphone, so that when you put the provided earbuds on, you had no trouble hearing what was being said. Housekeeping was there bright and early each morning, so that when you went for breakfast, the room was cleaned and ready when you got back. We were on the Saphire deck, and our room had a window the size of the wall, which opened for a wonderful breeze. The bed was very comfortable, and we slept well. They accepted laundry to be cleaned and had it back the next day. We loved the chocolates on the pillows of an evening, and the cute towel animals. There were always two new bottles of water on the table in our room each day. Also when we left the ship to go on a tour, the crew handed out bottled water to take with us. When we returned from a tour, there was a nice cold drink waiting for us when we turned our shore passes in, as well as wet cloth to wash our hands. A hand sanitizer unit was available also when reboarding the ship, and everyone was encouraged to use it. We prepaid gratuities, and it was well worth it, because we didn't have to continually reward the great service we received aboard the ship. The tour guides at each port were very knowledgeable and able to answer questions. An elevator was available for those who needed it, as well as walking sticks for the tours if needed. The cruise director was readily available and encouraged the travelers to come to her if there were any problems. We had no problems. The crew members worked well together to ensure that this was a wonderful experience. The transfer from the ship to Monograms bus at Basel was seamless, and went well for the trip to Mt. Pilatus, Lucerne, Zurich, and Como. Read Less

We are UK residents and live about 30 miles from London. We wanted a 7-day cruise with not too far to travel, so went for 7-days Paris to Normandy & return to Paris. Used Avalon last year on the Rhine and it was great. We travelled by air then, not our favourite these days but it was good from Heathrow to Zurich and return. This year we opted for Eurostar as our only previous experience, a short break to Lille, was good. This time it was a disaster, we missed our train by 2 minutes, as the security/passport control queue was massive. (Sat. morning). This cost us an extra £190 to get on a train 4 hours later, in separate seats, that was the only option. Return journey was terrible, we were dropped off at a side entrance and had a massively long walk to get to the Eurostar Terminal. The economy seats were tired and uncomfortable. At the end of the journey we had a massive walk to find our pick-up driver and then another huge walk to the car park. So our advice is unless you are young and fit, avoid Eurostar. The Avalon River Cruise part was very good, service, food accommodation etc. first class. Avalon include tips as well for UK customers and offer beer, wine & soft drinks at lunch and dinner included. We loved our first river cruise. Our stateroom was spacious and we loved the comfortable chairs and table overlooking the river as well as the river facing bed. I hadn't expected as much cruising at night but it was fine. We could not fault the hospitality of the crew, the focus on cleanliness whenever we arrived from outside the ship as well as on entering the restaurant. We loved the meals and service and the waiters and waitresses we wonderful and sociable. The meals seemed to be just the right portions and always good quality and we now will always look for a non-buffet style a la carte dinner. We also booked the tasting menu which was excellent (see photos). The quieter venue for this meal made chatting easier. We met some great people and friends on this trip - many from USA and Australia and those from the UK/Scotland in the minority - but for us this was unexpected but great and we really enjoyed the friendliness of everyone. There was a full range of ages on this trip. The excursions were well managed and the cruise director so professional and helpful. We took all the trips included but relaxed at other times and decided not to go on the optional excursions and never felt we were missing out - although always interested in others' experiences. We are still in touch with some of those we met on this trip. The rooms were serviced regularly during the day and towels changed. Everywhere was spotless - I just couldn't fault the boat. Coffee and tea and cakes available 24/7. We found afternoon tea half way through the week and that was the end of our resolve to be healthy - with tempting cakes. The beginning of our trip was colder than normal for July and this was disappointing but it soon improved. I cannot recommend Avalon enough - and to prove this we booked another as soon as we returned home. Read Less

I sailed on Avalon’s Romantic Rhine cruise from Basel to Amsterdam in June 2017. Everything was top notch from start to finish. I was treated like royalty the whole time. The entire crew was phenomenal - from initial check in at the hotel in Zurich to the final drop off at the airport in Amsterdam, everyone was friendly and helpful. The ship was gorgeous and spotless...the common areas and my stateroom. The food was absolutely delicious. I loved the wide variety of options at breakfast and lunch buffets. The dinners were out of this world! Every night was a delicious multi-course journey which highlighted our current location with local food and wine to choose from. I also really enjoyed the open seating and the opportunity to meet new people at every meal. The daily excursions were a lot of fun. I took advantage of all of the included excursions as well as several optional (extra charge) ones. They each gave a great overview of each of our stops, and the local tour guides were both friendly and knowledgeable. I also liked that we had at least a little bit of free time at each stop, so there was always an opportunity to do some shopping or get a snack or beverage. It was also great to be welcomed back to the ship after each excursion by the smiling faces of the crew and a nice, cool drink and a refreshing towel. The staterooms are fantastic, even though I did not spend much time there! The floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall sliding glass door really makes a difference. It was nice to sit and relax by that window either while sitting in port or sailing onto the next stop. Such a unique way to see everything! I am a regular solo traveler and did so on this cruise. It was very easy to travel solo with Avalon. I quickly made some new friends on our first pre-embarkation excursion to Mt Pilatus, and I spent a lot of time with them throughout the cruise. The variety of excursions and the open dining room also make it easy to meet a lot of new friends. I fell in love with Avalon on this, my inaugural river cruise and cannot stop bragging about them to all of my friends and family! I have already booked my next journey with them...the Active Discovery on the Danube in July 2018. I am very much looking forward to traveling in style with Avalon again, and I highly recommend them. The cruise was good overall. I gave it 4 stars, as the food was just OK. We thought that the portions were smaller then expected, certainly any fish being served was minute! Also, having to be in the restaurant at a specific time was very different to the flexibility offered on ocean cruises. The ship was nicely decorated, very comfortable public lounges. Strongly suggest watching for the drinks receipts are correct, as we were charged for other passengers drinks, and the Avalon staff would not credit us, which was surprising. The top of the ship was very comfortable, with nice loungers to lay out. The best part of the cruise, other than visiting interesting towns, was the very pleasant ships staff, always smiling and looking like they were happy with the job. The cruise director deserves special mention, Thomas, he was in complete control of all activities and tours, and did a fantastic job. Read Less
